However, he points out tax deferral offers short-term help, while what is really needed is cash – and cattle – on hand for future operations. This deferral does not help the ranchers attempting to hold on

to their current herds, Pincott notes. He explains the cost per animal will also likely drop with increased stock availability, and once herds are reduced, the producers will need to replace those animals

at some point. To defer income, the breeding herd must have been reduced by at least 15 per cent, and then eligible producers can request a deferral of 30 to 90 per cent from net sales income when filing their 2015

income tax returns. Pincott says the producers who have been buying feed rather than putting up their own are “getting hit really hard” by increased costs. Continued on A5

Chicken wings recalled

A recall has been issued for various store-packaged, cooked chicken wings sold at Canada Safeway stores, including in the 100 Mile House store, because they may contain the toxin produced by staphylococcus bacteria. People are warned not to consume the recalled products that were sold in Safeway locations across Western Canada and in Ontario. Issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) after being triggered by the manufacturer, the recall affects Party

Pack Chicken Wings Hot Salt N Pepper, PPK Wings Mix flavours Hot, Pinty’s Wings Salt and Pepper Hot, and Pinty’s Wings Salt and Pepper Cold, sold up to and including Aug. 14. Safeway Canada spokesperson Betty Kellsey confirms these wings were sold at the 100 Mile House store, and anyone who has any of the affected product on hand should bring it back to Safeway or throw it out. “Customers that do still have it are most welcome and encouraged to return it to the Safeway

store for a full refund, or we [can] replace the product.” The CFIA is verifying recalled products are removed from the marketplace and is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to the recall of other products. No associated illnesses have yet been reported. If other high-risk foods are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings at www.inspec tion.gc.ca, linked under Latest Recalls (which also offers more information on this recall).

Stubborn landfill fire contained

Firefighters battle high winds, intense heat, large material pile for six hours

FAST bytes MARSH TRAIL

Ken Alexander Free Press

With the support of four area fire departments, 100 Mile House Fire-Rescue battled a stubborn, “dirty, dirty fire” at the South Cariboo Landfill in 100 Mile House on Aug. 15, says Fire-Rescue chief Roger Hollander. During the exhausting sixhour battle, he says they had 25 firefighters and 10 trucks working at the site. “Firefighters from Lone Butte, Forest Grove, 108 Mile Ranch and Lac la Hache responded with their tenders, and we all worked hard to keep this fire under control. Fire-Rescue got the callout to respond to a dumpster fire at 2:25 p.m., but when the firefighters arrived, they realized it was much more than that. Hollander says there was a large pile of demolition material – covering close to an acre in size and stacked very high and deep – already burning aggressively. “It was basically a big row of material.” When they arrived, he adds the blaze had already spread to a grassy hillside west of the burning demoli-

100 Mile House Fire-Rescue received support from four area fire departments as they battled a stubborn blaze in a demolition pile at the South Cariboo Landfill in 100 Mile House on Aug. 15. Firefighters worked hard for six hours to get the fire, which was fanned by high winds, under control.

tion material and high winds were threatening to push flames to a nearby tree line of dead pine trees east of the main fire. “Our crews worked quickly to contain and extinguish the grass fire on the hillside and then contained the main fire on the east side, so it wouldn’t spread into the tree line. “Once we were able to do that, we were able to surround and confine the fire to the main material pile.” Hollander notes there

were some difficulties with the fire because there was a large amount of material and the flames and heat kept burning deep within the pile. “We eventually had to get an excavator in there to pull the material apart.” Another difficulty was there is no water available at the landfill, so all of the water was pulled from the Fire Rescue hall and the tender trucks took it back to the fire. Hollander says they

chose the fire hall because it would be safer to co-ordinate all of the tender traffic. “We also had strong winds going against us that day.” Firefighters were there for six hours, he says, adding they turned the scene over to private contractors who remained there with heavy equipment. They also had to bring water up to the site. Hollander says the contractors have been at the scene since Saturday and have made some good prog-

ress by making fire guards and breaking down the materials. As of 7:30 a.m. on Monday, he says there was only about one-third of the pile smouldering. He adds no one was injured, but everybody worked hard to gain control of the blaze and there were a lot of very tired firefighters by the time they got back to their halls. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Nastier plants in CRD’s cross-hairs

Carole Rooney Free Press

Concerns are growing about the spread of invasive plants cropping up in the Cariboo Regional District (CRD). CRD invasive plant management co-ordinator Emily Sonntag says invasive plants in the South Cariboo are monitored, and many of them are treated by staff, or by property owners who can borrow equipment to spray their own and get herbicide/ fertilizer rebates. However, there are some highpriority species being particularly targeted, including hoary alyssum, hoary cress and perennial pepperweed, she adds. Sonntag explains all three are members of the mustard family, and are on the top-offenders list primarily because they are fairly new and haven’t taken an overwhelming foothold in the area.

Cariboo Regional District photo

Hoary alyssum

Hoary cress

Hoary alyssum spreads quickly by seed into pastures and remote areas making it difficult to control. “It is toxic to horses, especially in hay.” Whether brought in by birds, wind

or vehicles, it is hard to track its path when the weed turns up far away from any previous infestation, she notes. When in bloom, Sonntag says, hoary alyssum has a small white

flower atop tall rough-feeling stems, and a tap root. Hoary cress also spreads by seed and develops a cluster of small, fragrant white flowers at the top of the stem and an extensive root system that renders pulling or cutting them ineffective, she adds. “If you break off pieces, you are going to have new plants ... and the root’s spread on an annual basis is absolutely amazing. Once it’s established, it’s almost impossible to get rid of it. “Both hoary cress and hoary alyssum we are treating up to three times a year and they are still coming back. So, it is a real resource sap.” Perennial pepperweed also has tiny white flowers and a huge, stubborn root system, and is on the provincial early detection-rapid response list, Sonntag says. District of 100 Mile House mayor and councillors recently approved a 2015 Capital Plan amendment to cover the replacement of the pedestrian bridge on the Marsh Trail. The $40,000 project will not add to the overall budget because a planned sidewalk project for Eighth Street was postponed after issues arose with a strataowned retaining wall in the vicinity. The new bridge will replace an existing wooden structure, which spans across the trail and the outflow from the marsh, that needs replacement due to deterioration.

CLIMATE ACTION Individuals and groups wishing to provide written submissions about their vision for British Columbia’s new climate action plan have until Sept. 14 to offer input. The extension comes in response to requests for more time to prepare comprehensive submissions. Originally set at 30-days, the public consultation began in July. A discussion paper is available at www. engage.gov.bc.ca/ climateleadership.

INCOME SUPPORTS Amendments to the regulations for employment and assistance, also including those for persons with disabilities, come into effect on Sept. 1. The new Single Parent Employment Initiative removes employment barriers for single parents on income and disability assistance, and fully exempts both child support payments and Canada Pension Plan Orphan’s Benefits. The list of these and other changes is online at https://news. gov.bc.ca/

Resident hunters shoot for changes

Carole Rooney Free Press

The BC Wildlife Federation (BCWF) launched its new Resident Priority Program (RPP) in July to strengthen its ongoing efforts to ensure British Columbia’s natural resources are managed in the public interest. The BCWF states this move is in response to mounting concerns about B.C. resident’s access to hunting, angling, and outdoor recreation opportunities that are being “slowly eroded in favour of private interests.” BCWF CaribooChilcotin member Floyd Lee helped organize a rally in 100 Mile House in February after the province gave some hunting allocations back to B.C. guide-outfitters last December. Lee says he believes the RPP will be welcomed and supported by outdoorsmen province-wide, as thousands are unhappy with the direction government is going in “catering” to non-resident hunters. “Resident hunter opportunity has been eroding for years; Region 5 - Cariboo is one of the more severely impacted regions. “The recent BC Wildlife Allocation Policy (WAP) is unacceptable and has

Close to 200 people rallied in support of resident hunters outside CaribooChilcotin MLA Donna Barnett’s office in 100 Mile House in February. They were protesting amendments to the province’s Wildlife Allocation Policy made in December 2014, which they said favours guide-outfitters and nonresident hunters.

betrayed thousands of resident hunter/constituents.” The public rallies, protests, petitions and letter-writing campaigns against the Wildlife Allocation Policy were ignored by Premier Christy Clark, he adds. “There has been too much wildlife management with political motives and a lack of science-based management. We need the resident priority program to help restore and ensure public access to fish and wildlife resources and prevent the privatization of a public resource.” B.C. Conservative Leader Dan Brooks has spoken out strongly in the past about the importance of giving a higher priority to resi-

dent hunters, although he is not directly involved with the RPP. There are two issues likely at the head of the BCWF’s RPP issue, and he supports both campaigns, he explains. “They have lost some tags, and they are 4,500 tags away from where they want to be ... so it’s a big deal.” Brooks adds the other prong of the issue is access to public lands. “[The BC Liberals] have not supported trying to get public land accessible for hunters – that has been gated by private citizens, and they have not supported wildlife allocation with resident priority in mind.” He says the BC NDP

don’t represent resident hunters’ interests in the legislature, either. For the most part, Cariboo-Chilcotin area guide-outfitter Stuart Maitland says the guideoutfitters don’t have a problem with the status quo. “We agree with resident priority, but in percentage only. We agree that residents have the highest priority, but also that [First Nations] have first rights.” What he wants to stop is the many attempts to strip other rights from guides, such as the “hardship rule” for limiting share reductions. In the fixed species animal allocations, Region 5 now has roughly 2,000 moose

harvestable, of which 60 per cent goes to First Nations, and of the remaining 800 moose, 75 per cent goes to resident hunters and 25 per cent goes to guides – but only in their own territory, he notes. Maitland explains about 30 per cent of Region 5 is not in a guide area, so after First Nations, residents qualify for 100 per cent of those moose. “We actually get only 9.9 per cent, not 25 per cent. “When the first allocations came out [in 2009], we actually lost 128 moose between all the guides, that’s what all the fuss was about from us.” When the province restored some of those moose to the guides, they ended up with little compensation, he notes. “We gained 16 moose back – that’s not even a moose per guide.” After having lost the rights to buy land in non-guiding areas and also losing a success factor (when fewer moose are killed than were allocated), Maitland says resident hunters still have (about four tags issued for every moose kill tallied). As a minimum, he adds, guides want to preserve the basic percentages they have.

Proposed water policies available for public comment British Columbians now have a chance to comment on their future water security. Four papers outlining proposed new policies under the Water Sustainability Act (WSA) are currently available for public comment. The province proposes to include these policies in new regulations under the WSA, which will come into force in 2016, and then government will begin work on

the remaining components required to fully implement the act. New policies • The regulations and operational policies will address groundwater licensing and protection; dam safety; and compliance and enforcement. • They will contain much of the detail related to implementation of the WSA.

• They are also intended to provide water users with greater certainty regarding their water rights, and establish clear rules about managing water during times of scarcity. • The policies will provide new tools to help ensure water stays healthy and secure for future generations, and allow government to manage surface water and groundwater as one resource.

www.fawnlakelumber.com lsprague@fawnlakelumber.com

• In this phase, comments on these four papers will be accepted until Sept. 8 at http:// engage.gov.bc.ca/watersustain abilityact. The new WSA was passed in May 2014, after more than four years of public engagement. Government is taking a phased approach to the development of policies and regulations due to the complexity of the new act and the number of proposed regulations.

Weeds proliferate in spite of spray

From A3

“We have one [tiny] site of it on Highway 97 down in the South Cariboo and we have been treating it for probably 10 years or more.” Effort to combat another relatively new offender that spreads through a large, creeping root system, Russian knapweed, is also underway. The pink to purple single-stemmed flowers are urn-shaped with papery green bracts underneath. “It’s also toxic to livestock, so we are

trying to get a hold on that one as well because it can be pretty damaging to agriculture if gets going.” While there are very few sites of meadow knapweed in the southern region, Sonntag says it also spreads quickly through largescale seed production, and is on the top priority list. It forms similar purple-pink flower heads to the meadow variety, but at the top of heavily branched, hairy stems. Both have lance-shaped leaves and are being hit with herbicide sprays two or three times a year by CRD staff.

Spotted knapweed and diffuse knapweed, which were highlighted as a concern by area ranchers in an Aug. 13 Free Press front page article, are also being targeted along with a host of others, she notes. “Even though we don’t have the funding to deal with all of them, they still are a very high priority, just [for] the grasslands and the effect they can have on them.” See the list of invasive plants and learn how to help control them and more about the loan and rebate program at www.cari boord.bc.ca/services/invasive-plants.

Area H ranchers don’t qualify for relief

From A1

“[Hay] is probably double what it was last year, so you are talking $250 a ton [or more]. “It’s a ‘we’re going to help you not go broke this year, but God help you next year’ sort of thing.” Pincott says B.C. drastically needs to increase its livestock herds, not reduce them, particularly since so many of the animals are shipped across its southern border. Drought assistance should be in payments that help the bottom line, similar to the B.C. wildlife program that directly compensates ranchers for crop losses

due to grazing deer, he explains. “It should be on a per-head base; then it doesn’t matter if you have 10 cows here or 1,000 cows there ... and you make the decision of how you spend that money.” The federal government works with the provinces and analyzes conditions on an ongoing basis, says Stephanie Rennick, executive assistant to KamloopsT h omp s on - C ar i b o o MP Cathy McLeod. She explains the July 23 announcement included an “initial list” of areas eligible for the 2015 Livestock Tax Deferral, and an updated list will be prepared

in the fall. “In the meantime, we would encourage ranchers to write to the provincial [Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick] requesting that CRD Area H be included.” Pincott says he was unaware of the program when he and a group of other area ranchers met with Letnick for sev-

eral hours earlier this month, and wishes the minister had mentioned the new program then. Pincott notes he will definitely be “rattling [Letnick’s] chain” now, as well as contacting McLeod about getting CRD Area H included on the eligibility list. The federal release and “initial list” of

Map sign features 108 businesses

Residents and visitors at 108 Mile Ranch might notice a large new signboard sporting a community map near the entrance to the subdivision. Located just off Highway 97 beside the 108 Mile Esso on Easzee Drive, the map details the streets and public amenities in the community, and has extra space for business advertising on the surrounding signboard. The idea for the sign was brought forward by 108 Mile Ranch Community Association (RCA) director Ingrid Meyer, a local homebased business owner who saw a need for a map that could also help raise funds for the nonprofit society. “We have a lot of clients getting lost at the 108,” says Meyer. “I phoned a lot of other

Folks not complying with bans Two fires were discovered by McNeil Lake, which is near Hendrix Lake, on Aug. 14 and 15. The largest grew to 0.5 hectares in size while the other remained small at 0.01 ha and both were caused by lightning. Ground crews, with the support of helicopters, worked on both fires over the weekend. The smaller fire, which was south of McNeil

Lake, was out as of Monday. Thirteen firefighters and one helicopter continued fire suppression efforts on the larger fire on Aug. 18 and are making great progress, says fire information officer Emily Epp of the Cariboo Fire Centre (CFC). Meanwhile, the BC Wildfire Service has received reports of people not complying with the partial camp-

fire ban in the CFC and is urging members of the public to report any open burning violations they see so that illegal fires can be investigated. Within the CFC’s jurisdiction, campfires are not allowed west of the Fraser River. They are allowed east of the Fraser River, but they cannot be larger than 0.5 metres wide by 0.5 metres high. In total, 20 firefighters did an exterior attack on the building, LLHVFD fire chief Terry Murphy says, adding a family member had left a pot on the stove and nobody was home when crews arrived. While there hasn’t been a fire investigation as of Tuesday, Murphy suggests the fire from the pot could have travelled up the kitchen wall, through the ceiling and into the rafters. It was extinguished from outside of the building. Murphy adds there were no firefighter injuries and the building was saved.

Canadians don't support CPP increase

hether or not Canadians should be forced to save more for retirement is shaping up to be a big federal election issue. A growing awareness of the massive unfunded liabilities of public-sector pension plans, which tend to be far more generous than those offered in the private sector, has been putting pressure on politicians to do a better job controlling public-sector compensation. The union response, led by the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), was to mount a campaign to convince finance ministers across Canada to consider a mandatory increase to the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP). Pushing for a mandatory CPP increase distracts attention from overly generous public-sector compensation plans. The CLC was successful at getting a CPP increase on the agenda of a meeting of finance ministers from

GUEST SHOT

he leaders of the parties trying to overthrow Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government must be jumping for joy. Mike Duffy, who was appointed to the Senate by Mr. Harper, is currently on trial – facing charges of fraud, breach of trust and bribery in connection to his Senate expense claims – and he has pleaded not guilty on all 31charges. The Liberals, NDP and Greens certainly don’t have to spend money on attack ads in this early stage of the federal election campaign. The trial of the embattled senator reconvened after the writ was dropped, and with the election in its third week, Mr. Harper’s former chief of staff Nigel Wright has been grilled on the witness stand. Every word that is being said and every e-mail that is being entered as testimony are making the front pages of national papers and are the lead stories of television and radio broadcasts. Without a doubt, Mr. Harper and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) are having their feet put to the coals by Mr. Duffy’s lawyer. Meanwhile, other members of the Conservative Party hierarchy are slowly but surely being pushed into the spotlight and put under a microscope. Obviously, it is affecting the federal election campaign. Trying as hard as he can to get the campaign media coverage to deal with his two strong suits – the economy and security for Canada – Harper has been hounded to answer questions regarding the trial and how much he and his staff knew about Duffy’s $90,000 in “overcharged expenses” being paid out by Wright. Initially, when the media found out that Wright provided a cheque to Duffy to pay back the money he received for “expenses that weren’t eligible for compensating” Mr. Harper said that was between Wright and Duffy and neither he nor the rest of the PMO’s office knew anything about it. However, Wright’s carefully worded testimony while under cross-examination about who was involved in the plan has caused the media to ask questions about just how far the payback scheme was imbedded in the PMO’s office and which topechelon employees have been involved. Some of the answers are shown in various strings of e-mails that have been entered in the trial as evidence. It has forced Mr. Harper to change his tune and say the “vast majority” of his staff didn’t know about the Duffy payback plan. However, it got a bit stickier when it was learned Mr. Harper’s current chief of staff, “close confidante” and senior Conservative Party campaign director, Ray Novak, knew about the staging of the payback deal. As the trial continues and more light is shed on the payback shenanigans, it will get tougher on Mr. Harper and the Conservative candidates as they try to hold onto the government seats in the House.

declared the time was not right for a CPP increase. Now, it is back as an election issue with the federal New Democrats, Liberals, and Green Party of Canada all supporting a mandatory CPP increase, while the Conservatives oppose a mandatory increase but would consider allowing Canadians to voluntary increase their CPP contributions. So it’s a safe bet this will be a hot topic when the premiers get together next month in Newfoundland for the Council of the Federation meeting. Helping Canadians save for retirement is widely supported. Forcing them to do it through an increase to a mandated government payroll tax is not. Conservatives will win Alberta; Bloc will take Quebec To the editor: As of today, the federal NDP holds 95 seats, in the federal Parliament. This includes one in the Northwest Territories, two in Newfoundland-Labrador, three in Nova Scotia, one in New Brunswick, 54 in Quebec, 19 in Ontario, two in Manitoba, one in Alberta, and 12 in B.C. Saskatchewan has zero federal NDP seats. What’s ironic here is that Saskatchewan was once home to the famous Tommy Douglas. One hundred and seventy seats are required

to form a majority federal government. This is impossible for federal NDP to achieve. One reason for this is the federal Conservatives hold 54 per cent of the federal vote in Alberta. There is no federal Wild Rose Party; therefore the Wild Rose voters will vote Conservative. The recent NDP provincial government in Alberta has no affect whatsoever on the upcoming federal election. Note that the NDP won this election only because of vote splitting between the

Conservatives and the Wild Rose. The NDP had 40.57 per cent of the majority vote compared to 52.03 per cent of the majority vote for the combination of the Conservatives and Wild Rose. Note that if there was no Wild Rose Party, these votes would have gone to the Conservatives. A second reason is that Gilles Duceppe has returned to the political arena as leader of the Bloc Québécois Party in Quebec. Presently Thomas Mulcair has 54 seats

in Quebec, but this will change on election night, as the Bloc once again will be capturing a portion of these seats. People who think it is time for Mulcair to become the prime minister of Canada are living and dreaming in a fantasy world. The facts listed above, prove once again on Oct. 19, 2015, federal election voting day, that the NDP cannot win the election as the government of Canada. Joe Sawchuk Duncan

Harper’s propaganda machinery flush with cash

To the editor: Why would Stephen Harper deliberately turn the 2015 federal election into one of the longest and most expensive in modern history? Because he is running scared and is counting on the insatiable self-interest of his government’s wealthy supporters, who will expect

to be rewarded with even more financial perks in the future, to bankroll an extended Conservative propaganda blitz. Harper’s “cons” have already amassed more funds than all the other parties combined and are convinced they can “buy” Harper another victory by outspending his opponents.

The Tory campaign will try to distract voters from objectively evaluating Harper’s dismal record of broken promises, despotic arrogance, fiscal mismanagement, cynical secrecy, oil-sand addiction, environmental ignorance, deficit budgets, terror fear-mongering and scandal-plagued appointments.

A wise man once said, “Those who are capable of tyranny are capable of perjury to sustain it.” Do not be fooled by repetitive underhanded brainwashing-styled advertising, by misleading robocall-type deceptions, by callous personal attack ads against political opponents or by the new election rules jerry-rigged by that

everal readers took me to task for last week’s commentary on the beginning of our long, hot federal election campaign. They pointed out, among other things, there are substantial cost increases to Elections Canada as well as higher spending limits for the parties. And thanks to generous tax deductions for political donations, taxpayers subsidize all party spending whether they want to or not. That’s the system as it is today, so rather than rail against it, it seems more useful to ask what we’re getting for our forced investment in this exercise. First, more leader debates. The traditional main event organized by TV networks for Oct. 8 appears to be a bust, with only Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May expected to attend. Conservative Leader Stephen Harper declined, prompting NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair to say he will only take part in debates that include Harper. Harper, Trudeau and Mulcair have agreed to a Sept. 17 debate hosted by The

billion over four years for First Nations education on reserves, and accelerated spending on school infrastructure. Mulcair has promised to hold a national inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women. Mulcair and Trudeau both pledge to reverse the Conservative moves to eliminate what’s left of doorto-door mail delivery, and to extend the age of eligibility for the Old Age Security pension from 65 to 67. All of these promises are presented in the most appealing way possible by the parties that promote them, and all involve spending and taxation trade-offs that the parties would prefer not to discuss. Another possible dividend from a formal campaign stretching more than two months is that more voters will pay attention to the real issues and actually take the time to cast a ballot. If that happens, and the long decline in voter turnout is reversed, it’s a good investment. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Information was also received that the truck was transporting chemicals (hydrochloric acid) and the rear of the trailer was smoking. BC Ambulance Service, police and two fire department crews attended the scene. The Williams Lake Fire Department HAZMAT team and Williams Lake Search and Rescue extricated the driver from the vehicle; however, the 55-year-old Prince George man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The motor vehicle incident (MVI) scene was cleared for a 100 metre containment area until a Ministry of Environment (MOE) emergency response officer from Kamloops arrived who advised it was safe for emergency personnel. A MOE spokesperson confirmed there were no leaks from the truck and that no vapours had been measured at the scene. Highway 97 was closed about six hours, and as of 4 p.m. on Aug. 18, Likely Road was still closed for ongoing investigation. If anyone has witnessed the MVI, they are requested to call the Williams Lake RCMP at 250-392-6211.

Woman charged with arson after setting fires WILLIAMS LAKE - A 51-year-old female has been charged with arson after setting several small grass fires along Highway 97 on Monday afternoon. "She will be appearing in court today (Aug. 18)," Williams Lake RCMP Sgt. Rick LeBeuf said Tuesday morning. At around 4 p.m. Monday afternoon the Williams Lake Fire Department responded to the fires which were burning directly below the highway between Bob Paterson Homes and the Husky Station. The fires were put out promptly, but could have spread quickly because conditions remain dry in the region. Witnesses saw the woman walking along setting the fires and were able to provide a description, Fire Chief Des Webster said.

Yes. There should be tighter regulations and larger fines.

Drones are pretty expensive, so the current $1,000 fine is probably not enough to deter people from using them.

I think they need to shoot them right out of the sky. Drones should not be around firefighting and aircraft areas at all.

Driver faces drinking, drug charges

Emergency crews responded to a head-on, two-vehicle collision between a pick-up truck and car near the bridge on Horse Lake Road (in the District of 100 Mile House municipal boundaries) around 5 p.m. on Aug. 13. RCMP investigators say the motor vehicle incident was caused by an impaired driver. Two people, who received non-life threatening injuries, were taken to 100 Mile District General Hospital. Both vehicles were totalled as a result of the impact. The male driver of the pick-up truck, a 100 Mile House resident, was arrested for impaired driving. Police also found a small amount of hashish on him subsequent to his arrest. He was also arrested for possession of a controlled substance. Blood has been seized from the man for chemical analysis. In addition, the male was found to have an expired driver’s licence. Charges against the male are pending lab

The passenger side tire of the truck jumped

up onto the wooden pedestrian access path leading across the bridge. The truck then proceeded across the centreline of Horse Lake Road and ran head on into an eastbound Pontiac Sunfire, driven by a 100 Mile House woman. Help Take Back The Night

Ken Alexander Free Press

Men and women are going to be able to speak out about violence against women and children in 100 Mile House next month. The 100 Mile House & District Women’s Centre Society is hosting the annual Take Back The Night Candlelight Walk and gathering at the 100 Mile Community Hall on Sept. 30. This year, organizers are holding the event at the community hall so there will be a great community presence, says Women’s Centre executive director Sonja Ramsay. She adds they are also including the White Ribbon Campaign, which was organized by men working to end men’s violence

against women. The campaign is dedicated to the 14 female engineering students who were murdered by gunman Marc Lépine in the École Polytechnique Massacre on Dec. 6, 1989 in Montreal, Quebec. The Sept. 30 event at the community hall will run from 5 to 8:30 p.m. and will start with opening remarks and a blessing from the Shuswap Nation, Ramsay explains. It will also include an RCMP-escorted walk around the downtown core. Participants are encouraged to wear purple and white, as well as comfortable foot wear for the walk, she adds. “Please bring your musical instruments and let’s make noise.

22 8

Together we can break the silence of violence and build peace.” There is no fee to attend this event and candles, light refreshments and snacks will be provided. Participants are asked to bring donations of money or non-perishable food, which will be used to help end the violence in 100 Mile House. Individual and corporate memberships to the Women’s Centre Society will be available.

Great turnout for inaugural Redneck Weekend

By Doris E Rufli

The Redneck Weekend was a roaring hit with everybody who attended – and they came in droves! At 11 a.m. on Aug. 8, children, grown-ups and families started arriving at the Legion Park to partake in the Fifth Annual Redneck Olympics, organized by Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 261-Forest Grove volunteers. A lot of behind-thescenes preparations combined with on-thespot encouragement resulted in loads of fun

and laughter, and many people rushing off to pick up a prize after winning a game. There was plenty of food available, including delicious hamburgers, hotdogs, cooked corn and cotton candy. T-shirts and pins were also on sale, and Jill Hardcastle painted many faces. That night, Riding Shotgun played up at the community hall, which had been decorated to a T by the Forest Grove & District Recreation Society members and friends.

Many people turned up in “fancy dress” and danced the night away and had a great time. The inaugural Redneck Barn Dance turned out to be a thundering success, with the Burger Sisters making sure nobody went hungry by offering tasty finger food. Sunday’s Third Annual Regatta saw seven boats built during the morning hours, and after a scrumptious lunch put together by the Forest Grove ’94 Lions and helpers, the race was underway.

The crews had to paddle around the pontoon boat on Ruth Lake, from which they were doused with water and this year the Forest Grove Volunteer Fire Department pumper truck #21 joined in the spraying fun from the shore. The team Emerald Off Spring rang the bell first, followed by Daisy Mazes, with Black Pearl coming in third. The Best Team Spirit award went to the Water Rats, while Black Pearl garnered Best Costume, and Best Boat went to White Trash, who, after a valiant effort and with loads of encouragement, made it back in

seventh position. It was a busy weekend, during which locals

and visitors alike joined in the fun, excitement and laughter.

Langley residents Mike O’Connor, left, Anita O’Connor, Jack O’Connor and Tracy Gall were members of the Emerald Off Spring, which took first place at the Redneck Regatta at Ruth Lake Park on Aug. 9. Mike and Jack built the boat from planks that had washed up on shore and other recycled materials in 90 minutes and raced it, while Anita and Tracy decorated it, worked on the costumes and cheered for their boys.

On July 27, the popular couple was presented with a farewell gift from the Deka Lake & District Volunteer Fire Department (DLDVFD) and the Deka Lake & District Ratepayers’ Association (DLDRA). Both organizations have benefited greatly from Julian’s expert knowledge of fishing, both in kind and financially, and they will be sorely missed. We wish them much happiness in their new home.

Kevin Kaban, who grew up in the Wild Horse Acres area, was inspired by Switzerland walking trails. He and Lynn Wiseman created and maintain the Wild Horse Acres Nature Trail. The nature trail is located on Baker Road in the new Lone Butte subdivision and even has nighttime flashlight reflectors along the trail to guide the way.

Lynn Wiseman and Kevin Kaban posed for a photograph at the start of Wild Horse Acres Nature Trail, which they created and have maintained.

There is more to this story because a second phase to the already fantastic hiking trail could possibly go around the

Nature Trail got its name from the fact it was actually a place where ranchers and cowboys could catch wild horses that gathered there in the cold winters in the early 1900s. The donated marsh lands are now a protected home for the many different species of wildlife, including beaver, muskrats, deer, moose, bear, coyote and many different birds. The descriptive information signs and rest benches make this an ideal wilderness excursion for the entire family, about a kilometre in length, with

Wilkie, Douglas top golfers

Last summer's champion Shane Wilkie had his name at the top of the leader board again following 36 holes in the 108 Men's Club Championship at the 108 Golf Resort, Aug. 15-16. Wilkie fired a two-day gross score of 147. Rob Douglas was the overall low net winner with 134. The tournament drew 32 local players, shooting for low gross and low net scores and skills competitions. Matt McNeill (149), Chris Stevens (154), Jim Laird (157) and Jay Scott (157) were the top low gross scorers in the first flight. Theo Weiring (136), Jim Zailo (138), Joe Batalha (140) and Dennis Thompson (140) shot lowest net scores in the first flight. In the second flight, Spence Henderson (170), Brian Coldwell (172), Bill Graham (173) and Rob Kielman (173) fired lowest gross. Al Smeds (139), Ron Tonts (144), Greg Aiken (146) and Jack Rausch (149) had the lowest net scores in the

second flight. In the first flight, Zailo was the closest to the pin shooter on No. 4 and Lee Hansen made the longest putt on No. 11 on Aug. 15. Zailo also hit the longest drive. The second flight saw Erv Hannah shoot closest to the pin on No. 12 and Kielman drop the longest putt on No. 11. 108 Ladies win Inter-Club Challenge

By a single stroke after three rounds of play the 108 Ladies Club won this summer's InterClub Challenge with golfers from Williams Lake and Quesnel. The final results after three rounds of total net scores were the

108 Ladies with 1,334 strokes, Williams Lake with 1,335 and Quesnel with 1,348. Only four points separated the Williams Lake club and the 108 Ladies Club heading into the third and final match played in

Quesnel on Aug. 10. The Inter-Club Challenge sees three rounds of golf played during the summer, one at each course between the 108 Golf Resort, Quesnel and Williams Lake, with at least six players from each club

participating and total net scores calculated. It is a great opportunity to meet other golfers, play the other courses, and develop team spirit within individual club. The second inter-club match was played at the

108 Golf Resort on July 27. The local ladies scored best with 474 strokes; Williams Lake was second with 481; and Quesnel was third with 486. 108 Ladies Club golfers finished second

place in Williams Lake on July 15. Williams Lake won the first round at their home course with a score of 382. The 108 Ladies Club finished a close second with 393, and Quesnel finished third with 416.

Great sponsorship helps team play big tournament in Winnipeg When 100 Mile 'N Hour needed runs to advance they scored them, and went on to win medals at a big fast pitch tournament in Manitoba recently. The local squad was up against some of the top teams in the country at the U14 Western Canadian Softball Championships in Winnipeg, Aug. 6-9. 100 Mile House played eight games in four days and won bronze. Coach Reg Hooper says the 11-player roster, which included two pick-ups from Cloverdale and one from Fleetwood, played awesome. “I'm really proud of them. I think it's something they'll remember for the rest of their lives.” 100 Mile 'N Hour won silver at a U14 provincial tournament in Clearwater in July. When a team from the Northwest Territories dropped out of the Western Canadian Championships, 100 Mile House got a shot at the tourney, and the last minute organizing and fundraising began for the “whirlwind” trip, some players getting on a plane while others making the 20-hour drive east to Manitoba. “The sponsorship around town was awesome,” says Hooper. “It was a lot of ball. July 23, 1940 - Aug. 9, 2015

Jan. 11, 1934 - Aug. 10, 2015

It is with heavy hearts that we regretfully announce the sudden passing of John Harold Symons, better known as Jack Symons. Jack was suddenly and tragically taken from us on Sunday, August 9th, 2015 after a short stay in Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops following an unexpected accident that occurred two days earlier. Jack was surrounded by his family as he took his final breath. Jack Symons was predeceased by his mother Katherine (Kit), his father William Symons and his nephews; Darrell Symons and Kevin Calderone. Jack was born in Langley, B.C. on July 23rd,1940 and grew up in Mission, B.C. Jack was an avid bowler and spent many hours at various bowling tournaments. It was at one of these tournaments that he met the love of his life, Sharon Symons. Jack and Sharon married in 1964 in Abbotsford, B.C. and made their home in Mission until 1969 when they moved to 100 Mile House, B.C. Jack worked at the 108 Resort during the construction of the golf course and then worked for the Provincial Parks Board. Jack and Sharon lived in the Horse Lake area for a few years and in 1977 they made their permanent home at the 103. Jack was a bowling phenom. He “wowed” people with his unique style and his ability to bowl perfect games! He competed in the B.C. games where his team took home a silver medal. Jack enjoyed travelling throughout the province, competing in numerous bowling tournaments. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Sharon Symons, his brother Larry (Sharon) Symons, his brothers-in-law; Bob (Gloria) Germain and Ray Germain, his sister-in-law Anita (John) Edlund and his nieces and nephews: Joe (Diana) Germain {Emma, Bailey, and Carter}, Bobbie-Lynn (Bob) Hendley {Cody, Caili, Courtney, and Alice}, Shelley Calderone {Colton and Matt}, Chris (Shayla) Edlund {Kennedy, Hayley, and Payton}, Jason Symons (Tanya) {Brendan Ethan and Ava}. In lieu of flowers we would ask for donations to be made in memory of Jack to the Kamloops Hospice, the wonderful place that cared for Jack and our family for the last few hours of his life. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at St. Jude’s Catholic Church at 12:00noon on Saturday, August 22, 2015. A reception will follow the service. 100 Mile Funeral Service Ltd. entrusted with the arrangements. 250-395-3243 Condolences can be sent to the family care of 100milefuneralservice@gmail.com

When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.

nee Bloomquist

Doreen was born on January 11, 1934 in Lac Vert, Saskatchewan, the first born of Melvin and Bernice Bloomquist. She came to BC with her family in 1956 and remained in the Cariboo, where she married Peter Popadinac in 1958. They followed the sawmills to various locations throughout the Cariboo as their family grew. In 1969, they made their home in 100 Mile House, where, aside from looking after her family, Doreen became a busy “hockey mom” and an active member of the Minor Hockey Auxiliary. She bowled for years, enjoying the time spent with friends; and as a TOPS member, she had many fond memories of travelling the province with her TOPS’ pals. Doreen’s favourite time of year was New Year’s Eve. She was unashamedly selfish about this “kid free” time with her friends; she loved to get all dressed up to go out dancing. Again, following Pete’s work, they moved to Williams Lake in the early 80’s for a decade or so before eventually retiring to her much loved lake property at Lac la Hache. Doreen’s life really was all about family and friends. Her home was a hive of activity with many hours spent playing cards with friends, preparing meals for special occasions, and “parenting” the many kids who were always welcome in her home. In addition to her family and friends, Doreen’s life was always filled with animals; from the horses of her childhood and youth, to her “hobby farm” in Tatton, to the numerous cats and dogs that came and went. Doreen was pre-deceased by her parents and her husband. Doreen is survived by her children Debbie, Gordon, Dianne, Gerald and Duanne; as well as her daughter-in-law Debbie (Duanne), her grandchildren Jessica and Justin (Gerald), Brody (Gordon), Derek and Lauren (Duanne & Debbie) and Nathan (Debbie), her great-granddaughter, Dezirae (Brody), her Aunt Dorothy and her sisters Laverne (McLean), Elaine (Dennis), and Marlene Bloomquist. Doreen’s life was also blessed by what we would call her adopted son, Tommy Dolinski and her adopted daughter, Patty Hurry. Through it all Doreen would say her life was never boring! A formal service will be held Saturday, August 22nd, 2015 at Doreen’s home at 3614 Forbes Road (North End) in Lac la Hache. The formal officiated service will begin at 2:00pm with the Celebration of Doreen’s Life beginning at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association through the 100 Mile Hospital PO Bag 399, 100 Mile House, BC, V0K 2E0. 100 Mile Funeral Service Ltd. entrusted with the arrangements. 250-395-3243 Condolences can be sent to the family care of 100milefuneralservice@gmail.com

Sustainability society elects board

The South Cariboo Sustainability Society (SCSS) had a good turnout (25 people) when it held its recent annual general meeting and potluck dinner. SCSS secretary Peter Jarvis says the presentation by Rod Hennecker on the Horse Lake Community Farm Co-operative was “really good,” with plenty of discussion and questions and some

HELP the HUNGRY! The need in our community is again

CRITICAL

and YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. There’s a FOOD CRISIS in the South Cariboo. The South Cariboo Food Security Committee has put out a plea for food donations to support the hungry families and individuals in need this summer. Local gardeners with extra produce in their plots, and the general public through non-perishable donations, are being asked to help with this food crisis. Children, youth and families are challenged daily in having enough to eat, especially nutritious food. With the food bank being on emergency hampers during the summer and the ever increasing need for food, our shelfs are really low and we still have over two months to go before the Food Bank returns to their regular schedule. The following staples would be greatly appreciated at the Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre, Loaves and Fishes and the Womens Centre • Pasta • Macaroni and Cheese • Canned Soup • Canned Beans • Peanut Butter (small jars) • Oatmeal • Rice • Size 2 and Size 5 and 6 diapers • Formula And anything else that a community member might have as a food donation. We will make sure that all donations are used by those in need. We also all greatly appreciate fresh food including eggs, bread, vegetables and fruit The newly established Community Place Garden at First St. & Birch Ave. is now harvesting; so help with watering, weeding and picking would be greatly appreciated; to learn your way around the garden, come down there on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. and speak to one of the co-ordinating gardeners. That produce is there for the benefit of the vulnerable population, and those who are hungry.

For more information, or to donate, please contact Loaves and Fishes 250-395-2708 100 Mile House & District Women’s Centre 250-395-4093 Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre 250-395-5155 Agri-Culture Enterprise Centre 250-706-0424

HOUSE PLAN OF THE WEEK

Ask an Expert:

ONE STOREY TBM1625

What are some easy tips for a basement makeover? The start of a new season is the perfect time to check some tasks off of your “to-do” list - whether it’s to get in shape or tackle at-home projects. If you’re planning on making some simple but effective changes at home, here are some tips on how to give your basement a total 180-degree makeover. Soundproof it Installing acoustic insulation is the perfect excuse to crank up the subwoofer, host a get-together or let the kids run wild. Soundproofing is the ultimate solution to maximize your basement’s peace, quiet and privacy. Industry experts suggest using Roxul Safe n’ Sound, which effectively absorbs sound and is easy to work with.

Total Living Area: 1625 sq. ft. Bedrooms: 3 Bathrooms: 2 Main Level: Chef-friendly 12’11” x 9’10”kitchen with serving peninsula next to 15’x6” x 21’5” great room, 3 bedrooms, master suite includes ensuite and two walk-in closets. Garage: Large 24’x10’x26’4” space with twin garage doors plus interior and exterior access doors. Special Features: Tiered and gabled front profile, setback entry, two spacious walk-in closets for master suite, twin garage doors.

Out with the old, in with a floor Installing a new floor or updating the existing one can improve the overall comfort level and look of your basement. Many unfinished basements have basic concrete flooring, which is cold year-round. Flooring options are endless - hardwood, laminate, cork and Berber flooring all add warmth to a basement bedroom or TV room; play mats are great for kids’ playrooms; and carpets are perfect to make any room feel more comfy and welcoming. Get creative with a fresh coat of paint Transform the dull and boring space into an inviting entertainment oasis or a colorful playroom with a simple coat of paint. When considering the paint, think about what color will compliment your existing furniture. To add some drama, consider adding depth and visual interest to your space with a different colored accent wall. Houseplan provided by...

250-395-3835

Accessorize it Throw pillows, rugs, lighting, and artwork are simple additions that can immediately enhance or change your basement’s look and feel. Pot lights can modernize, while art work and throw pillows can add a splash of color. Decide on a theme and color scheme for your room and keep your eye out for staple pieces that will make it feel like an entirely new space.
