Mission firefighters attempt to contain a large blaze that destroyed the Mission Auto Body & Towing building on Tuesday Morning. KEVIN MACDONALD Abbotsford News

Fire guts autobody business Kevin MILLS Mission Record

As shocked employees wandered in front of a burned-out shell of a building, fire inspectors began their job of searching through the rubble. Mission Auto Body & Towing, a family-owned business, was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning. Firefighters were called out to the huge blaze after a 911 call came in at approximately 3 a.m.

Six fire trucks and 30 firefighters were on scene. “We arrived to heavy fire and smoke coming from the roof and the front windows of the complex,” said Mission Fire Chief Larry Watkinson. “It was a rapidly developing fire so we took a defensive stance ... because it was too heavily involved to make any interior operations,” he added. Flames were as high as 50 feet as crews worked for several hours to contain the blaze.

Smoke could be seen from as far away as Abbotsford. “We knew that we had to control the fire because of the exposure to the adjacent buildings.” While firefighters managed to stop the blaze from spreading to other businesses, the structure itself was “pretty well gutted.” By about 5:30 a.m., the fire was under control. Crews were still on scene late Tuesday afternoon and

will continue to investigate the blaze. “I have a team of six people running the investigation,” Watkinson said. There were no injuries to report and Watkinson said it is too early to speculate on what may have caused the blaze. Owners of the business could not be reached for comment by deadline.
