Helping you prepare for your special day There are a lot of reasons to get married. Studies show that getting married helps you live longer, helps your earning power, helps you carry on your bloodline, and for those who worry about their looks, being married also makes you more attractive. There are also studies that delve into the best kinds of places to get married. Surprise—the East Kootenay region checks pretty much all of the boxes when it comes to being the perfect spot to have a marriage. People who have already chosen to get married here know that they are never far from a lake, river, forest or mountain meadow. Each one of those locations are featured prominently on the ‘best places to get married’ lists. So the location is taken care of and your reasons for getting married are sound. Now comes the really challenging part. For many, getting married is the most important part of their lives, (besides being born, of course). Because of that fact, the ceremony and reception have to be perfect. While there could be some behind-the-scenes anxiety, for the guests and for each other, the details have to be well in hand.

Who will cater the wedding? Who will take the pictures? Who will officiate? What do you serve at the reception and how should you arrange the seating? These questions have to be answered. While this wedding guide may not answer every question you have going into this very special endeavour, it is a good place to start. Enjoy the 2015 Wedding Planning Guide and make sure to complete the check-lists at the back. It is a great way to start on the road to your perfect wedding.

Ceremony, officiant and reception

I

t’s never too early to reserve. Have you made the big decision to get married? Then there’s no time to lose, especially with regard to the venue for both the ceremony and the reception. It’s no secret that the best dates get snapped up quickly, especially for the most beau tiful settings. Even the services of the marriage officiant should be reserved early. The first step is to determine whether you want a religious or civil wedding. Then comes the choice of reception venue. The possibilities abound: reception hall, conference centre, restau rant, hotel, country inn, golf club, outfitter, ski resort, spa, vi neyard, orchard, farm, sugar shack, museum, botanical garden, marina, cruise ship, or cottage. The options depend only on your imagination. Narrow down your list of choices by finding out if they can ac commodate everyone on your guest list. Ask about the services and equipment available, such as tables and chairs, decorations, catering, entertainment, liquor license, bathrooms, kitchen area, and audio and video equipment. Be sure to check what is and what isn’t included in the package. The legalities You want to unite your destinies abroad? Find out about mar riage legalities in your destination country so you can be sure

Religious or a civil wedding? It’s best to figure that out as early as possible.

your union is legally watertight. You and your fiancé should also discuss a marriage contract that clarifies your financial contributions and responsibilities to each other, especially if either of you has children from another marriage. It may not seem very romantic, or one of you may feel the other is preparing to abandon the marriage before it even gets started, but that’s not what it’s all about. A prenuptial agreement shows that you take marriage seriously, as a legal and moral commitment. A future spouse who is well informed before saying “I do” is a worthy counterpart.

What do you serve at your reception?

W

hat you give your guests to eat at your wedding reception shouldn’t be decided lightly, especially as the meal generally swallows up a large part of the wedding budget. Here are a few options. 1. A banquet. This is the classic wedding dinner format. It’s often preceded by a cocktail reception with appetizers and a cash- or open bar. The meal, which includes several courses, is served to guests at their tables by wait staff. The cost varies according to the number of courses and the choice and variety of dishes on offer. 2. Tapas. It’s possible to replace the traditional three course meal with tapas, or assorted samples of different dishes. These can be a meal in themselves when served at the table and in sufficient quantities. 3. A cocktail party. This format involves an informal seating plan that allows guests to circulate and nibble on a variety of finger foods throughout the evening. It’s a great way to encourage mingling among your guests. 4. A buffet. Simple and affordable, a buffet has the advantage of offering a wider variety of food. Guests get to serve themselves, according to their specific tastes. Discuss the different options with the person responsible for the reception. Whatever format you choose, always provide

options for the children and ask guests about allergies, intolerances, and dietary laws. Think about whether you want to offer an open bar or a cash bar, and whether you want to serve a dessert in addition to your wedding cake. These days, other sweet ideas are gaining in popularity at receptions, including cupcakes and all-you-can-eat candy bars. Ask your caterer about all the latest trends.

Creating atmosphere at your reception

W

hat makes one wedding more fun than another? There’s no need to look far: the secret is in the atmosphere. Here are some tips on how to organize a memorable wedding reception. The theme Begin by choosing the theme that will be the foundation of the wedding. This will guide you through your clothing and decorating choices, and it will even determine the wedding favours you offer and the meal the caterer serves. The theme can be a colour or combination of colours, an era or a season, a country or a culture, an object or a shared passion. Above all, it should reflect both your personalities. Entertainment and music If you hire an entertainer along with your DJ or musicians, you’ll have more fun at your own wedding. You’ll both be able to circulate amongst your guests, and there won’t be any uncomfortable lulls. A good DJ is a facilitator who can adapt to the age and tastes of the guests and keep the momentum going. Just be sure that anyone you hire can entertain according to your theme. Some ideas for surprising your guests • Plan a unique arrival at the reception.

• Set up a photo booth with wacky accessories. • Provide a guest book that can be a decorative item in your home after the reception. • Work out a dance routine to perform together or with your wedding party. • Have a karaoke machine for later on, at the reception. • Release disposable lanterns into the sky when it gets dark, or plan some fireworks. • Hire a magician, a croupier with casino tables, or a caricaturist to entertain your guests. • Serve custom cocktails, poured by a professional flair bartender who can juggle bottles and do some great bartending tricks.

The importance of your invitations

T

he countdown has started; sending out your wedding in vitations makes it all seem official. It is an important step indeed. In addition to announcing your wedding, this little piece of cardstock, tucked so neatly into its pretty envelope, gives your guests a taste of the celebrations to come. Their curi osity will definitely be aroused. To show all this promise, your invitation should include: • the names of the bride and groom (include those of the re spective parents if you want to follow the tradition of the pa rents hosting the wedding) • the location, date, and time of the ceremony • RSVP cards and envelopes (encourage your guests to con firm their presence by including a pre-stamped reply card) • an invitation to the reception (feel free to invite only certain guests to the party following the ceremony; specify the theme, dress code, location, and menu choices) It’s a go! Send one invitation per address, whether it’s to a single per son, couple, or family. Invitations should be mailed at least three months before the big day. If you’re inviting your guests to join you abroad for your wedding, or if some of your guests live out side the country, try to send your invitations as early as eight months in advance. Keep a few spare invitations, just in case.

Putting all the proper information on your invitation is as important as its look and feel.

Need some inspiration? When it comes to invitation design, it isn’t al ways easy to transform your ideas into reality. You can turn to websites or wedding magazines for help. If you’re not very artistic, choose a template or hire a graphic designer to create a unique wedding invitation.

Finding the perfect wedding bands

S

ince time immemorial, wedding bands have symbolized the continuity of marriage. Legend has it that a wedding ring is customarily worn on the left ring finger because of the vena amoris, or “vein of love”; it was thought to have a uniquely direct connection to the heart. We know today that all the fingers have similar privileges, but your choice of wedding ring is still as important as ever. After all, you’re hoping that it will adorn your ring finger until death do you part. Your tastes, your gender, and especially your budget are the main factors to consider in choosing the right band. The metal • Gold. Whether it’s yellow, pink, or white, gold is always a safe bet. The price varies according to the number of Karats (abbreviated by K or kt). • Platinum. This metal is attractive and very durable, but more expensive. • Titanium. It’s less expensive and doesn’t scratch or fade, but it isn’t as shiny as gold or platinum. • Silver. This is typically the most affordable option, but pure silver oxidizes over time. Discretion vs. extravagance You might enjoy having a ring that’s striated, bejeweled, or engraved with a personal message from your beloved. There’s

nothing to stop you from being creative and commissioning tailor-made wedding bands from your jeweler. Men typically prefer to opt for discretion and comfort; jewellery without gemstones is less fragile and thus more popular with them. And even though rings are available in an endless range of possibilities, most women still choose diamonds, which are, of course, forever. Wedding superstition holds that you shouldn’t try on your wedding bands before the big day, and that the groom-to-be should keep the rings until the wedding. But the only really important rule is that this day be filled with happiness.

I

t isn’t difficult to make sure you are legally able to marry in the province. Follow these steps and you’ll be worry-free come wedding day.

Are you eligible to marry in B.C.? • You do not have to be a British Columbia resident to be married in the province. However, you are required to get a marriage licence, which is valid for a term of three months and only valid in British Columbia. • Anyone over 19 years of age is eligible to apply for a marriage licence in B.C. Anyone under 19 years of age must first obtain the consent of both parents. No one under 16 years can be married without the consent of the Supreme or County Court. If one or both individuals were recently divorced within the last 31 days, proof of divorce must be provided. No licence is issued until the courts finalize a divorce, normally 31 days after the divorce decree is issued by the Courts. Arrange the Marriage Ceremony • In British Columbia, couples can choose a religious or civil ceremony, which must be witnessed by two people. • To perform the religious ceremony, you can choose a re-

Wedding Planning Guide Summer/fall 2015

ligious representative who must be registered with the Vital Statistics Agency, under the Marriage Act. • If you plan to have a civil ceremony, contact and book a marriage commissioner as soon as possible once you set your wedding date. Register the Marriage • The marriage commissioner or religious representative who will perform the wedding ceremony will help complete the Marriage Registration Form. Within 48 hours of the wedding ceremony, the form will be sent to the Vital Statistics Agency, where the marriage will be registered and a legal record will be kept. Proof of Marriage • At the time of the ceremony, your marriage commissioner or religious representative may provide a statement of marriage, which can be used temporarily as proof of marriage. However, it is not a legal document. You will receive a legal Marriage Certificate from the Vital Statistics Agency after the registration of the marriage. Which name can I use? • After marriage, you can continue using or choose to use your own surname at any time. You also gain the right to use your spouse’s surname. This does not result in a legal change of name or any automatic change to your identification records. If you choose to use hyphenated surnames, a legal Change of Name is required.

Carrying photos (or having them on your phone) of what you like in a bridal look can really help the salon staff.

T

he excitement, joy, and anticipation you’ll feel on the big day will make you radiant with beauty. After all, there’s nothing like a good dose of happiness to put a blush on the cheeks, a sparkle in the eyes, and a beautiful smile on every bride’s face. But to truly glow from head to toe, perhaps you should think about consulting some beauty professionals. While a friend or family member may know a fair amount about beauty, a true professional also provides accountability you can’t get by using a friend. 1. The hair stylist A stunning bride needs a fabulous hairstyle. Whichever style appeals to you, you’ll want to entrust your hair to the expert hands of a real hair salon professional. Remember to make two appointments: one to try different hairstyles, and another for the big day. 2. The esthetician Manicure, pedicure, hair removal, facial, eyelash extensions, and massage: a wedding is the perfect excuse to pamper your body. Not to mention that stray body hairs, dry skin, and da maged nails are not on the guest list! Don’t forget to make two separate appointments for your makeup as well. 3. The dentist Because laughter is the right of every newly married couple, treat yourself to a teeth whitening treatment for a sparkling smile. A beautiful and organized bride: • Make your appointments as soon as possible. • Carry a photo of your dress and accessories to all your appointments, along with inspiring images from magazines. • Find out the best time to pamper yourself with the vari ous treatments. This way you won’t have any regrets, such as hair co louring done too early (hello, roots!) or a mi crodermabrasion done too close to your big day.

t only lasts for a few minutes, but the arrival of the newlyweds at the reception launches the fun part of the wedding celebrations. After saying “I do” to your significant other, how will you go about surprising your guests when you make your grand entrance? Arriving in style You’re allowed to impress your guests any way you want when it’s your wedding. So the aim is to find a unique way to arrive that reflects your personalities and the theme of the festivities. Here are a few suggestions. • For a waterfront reception, arrive on a boat to cause a real sensation. • You prefer to stay on terra firma? Join your guests on two wheels, making your appearance on a motorcycle or scooter. • You like a bit more comfort? Show up in a classy limousine, race car, or vintage car. • You’re both green at heart? Opt for an entrance in a horsedrawn carriage, on a bicycle, or even better, on a tandem bike. • For an extravagant touch, dare to make a theatrical arrival by helicopter, parachute, or hot-air balloon. If you want your wishes to come true, don’t wait until the last minute to make your reservations. When the time comes to decide on your choice of transportation, be sure to take into consideration the reception venue, the weather forecast for your big day, and the bride’s gown; it may even be wise to plan a second outfit for the trip.

The romance of a marriage abroad

W

hy does getting married abroad have such a romantic feel to it? Is it the local culture, the surroundings, the change of scenery? Have you set your heart on getting hitched far from home, even in a different country? This endeavour can be difficult, but the rewards can be worth all the trouble. Your marriage is an event to remember and what could be more memorable than finding yourselves in a unique, foreign destination, surrounded by your family and friends. The customs and architecture may be different, but your feelings for each other remain the same. Here are a few suggestions and recommendations for a truly unique wedding.

FIRST STEP: THE DESTINATION The beauty of the islands Among the most popular destinations for future brides and their grooms are the islands of the Caribbean and the Pacific. What could be more idyllic than an immaculate beach, a turquoise sea, and flamboyant colours for those dreaming of an exotic wedding? It is a priceless setting, a little corner of paradise that you’ll always remember. The charm of Europe With its irresistible and timeless charm, Europe has everything to please the future bride and groom. France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Greece: every European country has inspiring culture and picture perfect scenery. The extravagance of Vegas Even though Las Vegas might well deserve the nickname “Sin City”, it is also known as a city of love, and particularly of weddings. Indeed, thousands of love birds go there every year to exchange vows in one of the many wedding chapels. And a Vegas wedding will sure make a good story for the grandchildren one day! The magic of Disney Do you love the idea of being a princess for the day? There’s no need to marry a member of the royal family to treat yourself to a fairy tale wedding. All you have to do is exchange your vows in front of Cinderella’s castle, the focal point of Walt

Disney World and Disneyland. SECOND STEP: THE FORMALITIES Once you’ve decided where you want to be married you will have to keep in mind that the next steps are a bit trickier. Now all the legal and administrative formalities have to be settled, which can vary greatly depending on your chosen destination. Every country has its own laws about marriage, and they have to be respected in every way in order for your union to be considered legally binding. Consequently, some research is necessary to determine which documents you will need, the procedures to follow, and the conditions to respect, depending on your destination. Generally speaking, the bride and groom can obtain all the necessary information from the embassy or consulate of their chosen country. It is also possible to find out more from Service Canada (www.servicecanada.gc.ca) or by visiting www. travel.gc.ca. THIRD STEP: THE ORGANIZATION Because getting married abroad is fairly common these days, many services are available to help the future bride and groom organize the most important event of their lives. You can obtain information from your travel agent, contact the wedding coordinator at the hotel where you’re staying directly, or call on the services of a company specializing in wedding planning. This is very important. You will want to get everything organized well in advance of your wedding date because different countries do things in a way that you will not be accustomed to. Would you love to get married abroad but all the paperwork and administrative charges involved are causing you to think twice? With a bit of planning, there’s nothing to stop you from going to your dream destination where you can celebrate your love in a different way. • Lovers: pop the question during a tropical sunset. • Newlyweds: make an exotic location your honeymoon destination. • Long-married couples: renew your vows in a romantic setting. • The savvy couple: exchange vows symbolically — have your official wedding at home then organize a second ceremony abroad without having to worry about whether it’s legally binding. Your family and friends will be completely fooled!

The politics of the head table

P

lanning your head table seating arran gements can be tricky, especially when parents are divorced or remarried. It is important to leave lots of time to plan a solution to this problem and consult the parties involved; if done well in advance of the wedding day, chances are that you can accommodate everybody’s needs. Typically, if the parents of the bride or groom are divorced and remarried, they are not seated at the head table with their new spouses. However, if head table space and fam ily relationships allow for it, then toss convention to the wind and do what feels right for your family. One practi cal solution is to organize a separate table for step-parents and their families, which could be in close proximity to the head table or an extension of it. Another option is to use a table in the shape of a half circle just for the bride and groom, the maid of honour, and the best man. The partners of the wedding party members sit at other tables. There are many ways to organize the seating at the head table, but generally speaking, the groom is seated to the right of the bride. If the bridal party is seated at the head table with the newly married couple in the centre, then men and women are seated alternately. If you’re afraid of hurting the feelings of people who you

have not chosen to sit at the head table, you could always ask them to host the table where they will be seated. In that case, be sure to indicate the names of the table hosts on your seating chart. If it is proving difficult to find a head table arrangement that pleases everyone, you might want to re sort to a “sweetheart” table, at which the bride and groom are seated alone. This is an increasingly common solution for keeping everyone happy at the wedding reception.

Five things for a good maid of honour

B

eing a maid or matron of honour involves a lot more than just wearing a beautiful dress. Her role is also to personally ensure that everything goes perfectly for the bride, before, during, and after her big day. Do you have what it takes to fulfill this role? 1. Organization: One of the maid of honour’s responsibilities is to organize the bachelorette party and accompany the bride to a variety of gatherings and fittings. In other words, your good time-management skills are essential. 2. Honesty: The future bride is hesitating between two dresses and one of them is completely wrong for her. Now’s the time to be honest. You were chosen by the bride for this role because your opinion is important to her. Of course, you don’t impose your ideas, you just make tactful suggestions. The most important thing for a maid of honour to remember is that 3. Patience: Even if your friend is turning into a bridezilla they are there to make it easier for the bride. (a bride-to-be whose wedding planning behaviour can be regarded as obsessive or intolerably demanding), you still need a guest, but one of the people in charge of the entire event. 5. Modesty: Be content to take the backseat on the wedding to be patient and give moral support to the bride throughout day; after all, it’s not you who is getting married. Think only of the process. 4. Devotion: On the big day, your job is to ensure that the the bride while you’re wearing that formal dress and uncombride’s dress, particularly the train, is always arranged properly fortable shoes that you’ll never wear again. Oh, what wouldn’t and that her hair is perfect for the photos. Sooner or later, you have to think finances

A

marriage is a new financial start. When couples get together there are adjustments to be made, goals to be set and financial adventures to take. Share information. Both partners should be fully aware of each other’s financial situations, from spending to debt to investments. With full financial disclosure, you’ll be better equipped to plan together. Review and establish goals. The sooner you set financial goals, the better your chances of reaching them. Do you want to buy a new home or move up in the housing market? What about a retirement savings strategy? How much will those goals cost and how long will it take to reach them? Budget. Create a budget that will allow you to save and invest enough to reach your goals. A good budget will help identify how much you earn and spend, and how to divert more income to savings. Decide how finances will be managed. Will one spouse be responsible for a larger percentage of bills and expenses, or will they be shared equally? Will you have joint savings and investments? Who will physically handle financial transactions? Pay down debt. If you owe money, particularly high-interest debt such as credit card balances, formulate a plan to pay it off. Consider ways to reduce borrowing costs—for example, setting up a home equity line of credit if you own a house and quickly paying off any amounts you borrow.

Assess insurance needs. Life insurance is a necessity when you’re married. The last thing you want is for your spouse or family to be left in dire financial straits if something happens to you. Consider disability and critical care insurance as well. Make or update wills. Both partners should have up-to-date wills. This means jointly discussing estate planning needs and goals. You should also have powers of attorney for financial and personal care, in case one of you is unable to manage your financial or personal affairs because of illness or injury. Establish an emergency fund. Keep six to nine months’ combined living expenses in an emergency fund. If you run into financial difficulty—perhaps one of you could fall ill or lose your job—an emergency fund can help you get through. One final tip. It’s a good idea to get help from financial experts. At this stage of life couples can benefit from professional advice, including the services of a financial advisor. With the right advice you can ensure your financial life together gets started on the right note. Story courtesy of Edward Jones.com

There’s no getting around the fact that weddings can be expensive. For many couples they’re the first of the largest expenses they will make together. It’s quite easy for individuals to go over budget on their wedding day if they do not carefully keep track of what has been spent on all the elements of the big day. Use this budget planner to keep all of the costs associated with the wedding in one easy-to-manage place.
