Creston town council opted not to revisit the current fee structure for criminal record checks after a discussion at the July 14 regular council meeting. Since the town assumed responsibility for paying a portion of local policing costs in 2012 it has also benefited from revenues generated by criminal record check charges. The fee of $35 was determined
after a survey of fees charged in similarly sized communities in the province. Volunteers who require criminal record checks to perform their duties are exempted, as are town employees. “A waiver for town employees is given as the town would be both the payer and payee,” finance director Steffan Klassen said in a report to council. The issue of fees was brought up to discuss whether students who
require criminal record checks for studies in programs such as nursing and social work should be charged. “I think it is just part of the cost of education,” said Coun. Kevin Boehmer. “Just pay the $35 and get on with it.” Coun. Jen Comer disagreed, arguing that every dollar counts for students who are borrowing money to pay their way through post-secondary education.

It also helped support the needs of parents who were attending college.
