LAST CHANCE FOR OUR 2015 CIVICS
A wildfire has forced residents out of their home and closed off Westside Road. Westside Road is closed in both directions between Denison Road and La Casa because of a lightningcaused fire and no detour is available. An evacuation order is in place for 70 homes along Westside Road as a result of the flare-up Monday of the Shelter Cove blaze. On Tuesday afternoon, the fire was 300 hectares in size and was being tackled by North Westside and Wilson’s Landing firefighters and crews from the B.C. Wildfire Service. La Casa Resort is not under an evacuation order or an alert. As of Tuesday, the fire led to electricity being out for 1,400 customers, including many who are not part of the evacuation order.

The owner of a Falkland area resort is trying to remain optimistic despite a raging wildfire. Sandra Martens and four guests were forced to evacuate from the Bolean Lake Lodge as a lightning-caused fire gained strength Monday night. “I saw the cutblock at the end of my lake go poof,” said Martens, who is now staying at a Falkland motel. With future fire activity uncertain, some advance preparations are being taken in Falkland, including firefighters ready for the possibility of structural protection. Twenty-three firefighters have been on the ground and helicopters have been bucketing water. A request was put in for tankers to join the fight. “The winds are definitely a concern and it’s spotting which challenges fire suppression,” said Kelsey Winter, an information officer with the B.C. Wildfire Service. The northeast flank is burning slash and juvenile forest. CSRD was setting up a sprinkler/pump unit at the Bolean Lake Lodge Tuesday. “It can sprinkle the structure and protect it,” said Nitchie. Updates on the fire can be found at www. sepadvisory.ca

A Vernon woman is in critical condition in Kelowna General Hospital after being struck by a vehicle while out for a walk Saturday morning. The 53-year-old woman was in the crosswalk at Tronson Road and Okanagan Landing Road when she was hit by a vehicle shortly after 7 a.m. “The injured female was listed in critical condition with injuries to her head as well as multiple internal injuries,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “The victim was immediately transported to Vernon Jubilee Hospital by ambulance. She has since been transported to Kelowna General Hospital.” Officers noticed a black Jeep Liberty across the road had collided with a Hydro pole. “Indications are the vehicle was being driven westbound on Okanagan Landing Road when it struck the woman in the marked crosswalk,” said Molendyk. The driver of the Jeep, a 92-year-old man from Vernon, was transported to VJH with minor injuries.
B.C. Hydro was called to replace the pole which had been sheared off at the base. An RCMP traffic analyst was called to the scene and the investigation is continuing. The police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to please call the Vernon RCMP detachment at 250-545-7171.

Back to the drawing board for project want to look after the people in the neighbourhood. We want to find a compromise.” The concern arose over the applicant seeking to reduce the required right-of-way width of a local road from 18 to 15 metres and reducing the required width of a local road from 9.2 to seven metres. The applicant also sought a variance so an asphalt pathway could be installed instead of concrete sidewalks.

A development in Enderby is not proceeding as originally proposed. City council directed staff Monday to take another look at the application for an 11-lot subdivision on Johnston Avenue. “We had some written concerns and people in attendance in council chambers,” said Coun. Brian Schreiner. “I don’t want to deter development but we

City staff suggested that some benefits may occur if the roadway width is reduced, including reducing the amount of runoff which would enter the storm water system. “Alternate development standards which
result in narrower roadways with less pavement are consistent with sound asset management principles and are economically sustainable for the city,” said Kurt Inglis, planning assistant, in a report. “Alternate develop-
ment standards which reduce costs for developers may result in increased affordability for homeowners. A narrower roadway acts as a traffic calming measure which helps to foster a pedestrian friendly environment.” Despite staff support for variances, council decided that another review of the proposed development needs to take place. “There are nice homes there (in the neighbourhood) and
we don’t want to just go from concrete sidewalks to asphalt,” said Mayor Greg McCune. “We’re looking for what’s their now.”
Warning issued about thefts from vehicles ROGER KNOX Morning Star Staff
Vernon RCMP are dealing with a large number of thefts of items from vehicles in different areas of the city. In the last 10 days, police are averaging between three and four complaints per day about items being stolen from vehicles. “There’s been a real rash of these thefts
in the last couple of weeks,” said Gord Molendyk, Vernon RCMP spokesperson. Sometimes, the thefts are easy for the criminals. In one case, a vehicle was left unlocked and the thief or thieves helped themselves to a pair of iPods. In another instance, the back window of a vehicle was broken in the parking lot of a Vernon hotel and a bicycle was stolen.
“The thefts are another reminder to motorists to please not leave anything in their vehicles,” said Molendyk. “People need to be reminded that there are people looking for things. Keep valuables locked up out of sight.” Molendyk added that the thefts are happening in all parts of Greater Vernon, from hotel parking lots to the downtown core to area beach parking lots.
Priest Valley upgrades completed Morning Star Staff
Upgrades have been completed at a Vernon rink. Installation of boards at Priest Valley Arena has been completed a week ahead of schedule. “The installation of the new boards was a major maintenance project for Greater Vernon Recreation Services,” said Tanya Laing Gahr, the City of Vernon’s communications co-ordinator. The contract was awarded to Ontario-based Riley Manufacturing and it came in at $157,000, $112,200 under budget. These boards are the same standard as those in Kal Tire Place, with aluminum dasher boards and taller glass than the previous wood construction boards. “An upgrade was also added that will allow for a

Search on for migrant workers ROGER KNOX Morning Star Staff
The Vernon RCMP detachment is investigating the case of the missing Mexican migrant workers. Four men have been reported missing from a BX area orchard where they had been working. Soto “The men went missing on June 26, leaving their personal effects behind. However, it appears they took their iden-
tification papers with them,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. The investigation, said Molendyk, has learned one of two things might have happened with the workers. The men may have gone to the South Okanagan to work on another orchard, but they have not checked Gallegos in with the Mexican consulate to notify them of a change in employment. “Another aspect of the investigation
suggests the men may have attempted to cross over to the United States but this cannot be confirmed,” said Molendyk. “The migrant workers are flagged with Canada Border Services Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.” The four men are listed as Uriel Huizar Soto, age 37, (address unknown); Juan Manuel Sanchez Gallegos, 30 (address unknown); Issac Jimenez Bautista, 28, of Carretera, Picacho al Ajusco, Mexico City; and Juvenal Rios Binedo, 39, (address unknown). Police only have photos for Soto and Sanchez Gallegos. All four men came to Canada June 16.

Vernon’s Shauna Quigley earned gold, as well as three silver medals, at the World Police and Fire Games in Virginia.
Sheriff brings home gold
JENNIFER SMITH Morning Star Staff
A local deputy sheriff celebrated the end of her career by adding some gold and silver to her wall of achievements. Shauna Quigley could routinely be seen at the Vernon and Kelowna courthouses over the past 23 years, since starting her career in the RCMP in 1981. The retired deputy sheriff, who lives in Vernon, recently put her skills to action at the World Police and Fire Games held in Fairfax, Virginia. There she won a gold and three silver medals in individual swimming events as well as a silver in women’s relay. “Her gold medal was won on July 1, which in addition to being Canada Day was also her first day of retirement,” said proud husband Dan Quigley. The WPFG are a friendly competition open to active and retired peace officers and firemen from around the world, attracting approximately 12,000 competitors. “She decided to participate in the WPFG because of the camaraderie between fellow peace officers and firefighters from around the world,” said Dan. “She has always enjoyed swimming and found it to be relaxing from the stressors of the job.”
“She has always enjoyed swimming.” — Dan Quigley
The local couple did attend the last Games held two years ago in Belfast, where Shauna managed a couple of fourth place finishes.
This year she ramped it up, and with some pointers from a local swim coach, she made it to the podium. Following her first
post in Prince Rupert, Shauna has been in Chase, Ottawa and Kelowna. During her time in Ottawa she was on the world famous RCMP Musical Ride, where she performed at Expo ‘86 in Vancouver, Now the couple, who have two grown daughters, plan to take it easy and retire in the Kootenays.

Activate teamwork
t was last month when the City of Vernon revealed a new marketing brand with much fanfare and excitement. Activate Life is a call to arms, letting residents and tourists know that Vernon is the place to be for recreation or culture. “It can mean anything from bocce ball to spending time with the kids on the beach or skiing at Silver Star or Sovereign Lake,” said Glen Benischek, chairperson of the city’s economic development committee, at the time. Activate Life will be found on all advertising, but the brand will also be amended for specific interests, such as possibly, “Activate your game” for Richard Rolke sports, “Activate your menu” for culinary experiences and “Activate your imagination,” for culture. “We wanted something that separates us from other communities,” said Benischek. And while that may have been Vernon’s intent, that distinction didn’t last very long. A week later, the City of Kelowna announced plans for a new Active By Nature campaign. “This is how council believes we should be branding our community, as a great place for healthy and active living” said Mayor Colin Basran in the Kelowna Capital News. Kelowna’s campaign will give residents and visitors information about its cycling and trail networks, paddling spots, swimming and running routes as well as its healthy city strategy and its strong neighbourhoods program. “We have many beautiful natural assets,” said Basran. “We’ve done a pretty good job of promoting them but this (program) just brings it to a whole new level.” Basran’s comments weren’t dissimilar to
BEYOND THE HEADLINES
those coming from Vernon. “Vernon is a rare place, where it’s possible to go from mountain top to lakeside within 20 minutes — with world-class golf resorts, orchards, fine dining and unique shopping opportunities along the way,” said Benischek. “We hope that Vernon will embrace this brand, which is a great reflection of our city and the infinite possibilities here.” So now that both Vernon and Kelowna are bragging about themselves, it will be interesting to see how they handle the other’s similar marketing efforts. The first choice would be to compete headto-head and try and make the other look poor in comparison. However, that could put Vernon in the loser’s corner as the big city to the south has more of everything — shopping, restaurants, parks and, most importantly, advertising dollars. Of course the case could be made that Vernon is an ideal location for a slower pace of life, unique experiences like O’Keefe Ranch, abundant agriculture and the vast backcountry. The bottom line is such an approach could just heighten the age-old rivalry between Vernon and Kelowna. But beyond marketing fisticuffs, there is another potential solution, and that is for the cities to partner and jointly promote themselves as the most active place in Canada. It would be a perfect storm of what tourists and are looking for. Basran told the Capital News that promoting outdoor recreation and healthy lifestyles is not only is good for the health of Kelowna residents, it will also help it attract people to live there as more people looking to relocate want active lifestyle options where they live. Vernon is also singing from the same song book when it comes to economic development so it makes sense for both municipalities to expand the choir and take the show on the road. Let’s activate co-operation.
Residents waking to the smell of smoke this week and seeing the plumes line the sky don’t have to be reminded that fire season is in full swing in the Okanagan. It’s a scary situation for anyone living in the areas of evacuation or nearby. Being suddenly evacuated from your home, not knowing where you will go, or what will happen while you are away is a frightening experience. One can only hope that all those who have had to leave had enough time to gather their fur babies and necessities. But often, when it comes to wildfire, there is little warning, and people must flee in the blink of an eye. Which is why all residents are reminded to be on alert at all times. Have an emergency bag packed and ready to go for you and your loved ones. That also includes your furry friends. Whether it’s a kennel, food and papers ready to go for your domestic pet, or a plan to load up or move livestock to safe ground. It’s also vital to make a plan and share it with all members of the household. Make a meeting place outside as well as one outside of the neighbourhood. Establish an out-of-area emergency contact and educate all household members on how to turn off major utilities such as gas, power and water. To find out if you are ready, the province has a PreparedBC survey online. It also includes tips, strategies and information to help you better prepare yourself, your family and your neighbourhood. Plus being prepared applies to all sorts of emergencies, from fire to flood, earthquake, major power outage and more. Taking a bit of time to prepare now can make a world of difference in the event that an emergency situation does strike home.

Cemetery conditions a concern
t is with such disappointment that I feel the need to write this letter. As Vernon is and has been recognized as a preferred destination for seniors to live and thrive through out their retirement years, my parents relocated from Calgary to Vernon about 25 years ago. Mom and dad loved Vernon and became involved in different organizations. They did countless volunteer work and contributed to their community as much as they could. Vernon was their city and they were proud of it. To not burden their daughters with funeral costs, they pre-arranged, selected and paid dearly for their funeral and burial needs. They had numerous discussions with us regarding their plans and how impressed they were with the Vernon cemetery for its presentation, care, and consistent overall appearance, and feeling of peace and serenity when on
STICKLE LIGHT NEEDED The items on the latest issue regarding the Ministry of Transportation claiming that a traffic light on Highway 97 would catch motorists by surprise is simply a load of political baffle-gab. That problem could be easily overcome by warning notices placed in advance of the traffic light in both northbound and southbound lanes at a proper distance ahead, not like the stupidity of one after leaving the new Oyama bypass, which can only be seen after rounding the bend just before the traffic light there. It should have been placed where the bypass joins the original road again. As it stands now, you can come around the corner at 70 kilometres an hour to find a queue of vehicles right in front of you and you better be damn quick on the brakes. The warning sign is far too close to the traffic light. But those individuals at the ministry are too blind to see that. We need a big crowd and the presence of Eric Foster at the open house to force the ministry to back off and do what the people living here want, a traffic light. They need to be forcibly reminded that they work for us, not the other way around. Noel Tyler AGRICULTURAL RATES On June 28, a letter from Gerry Laarakker appeared in The Morning Star asking, "what is the situation here in Vernon" in regards to the use of and costs incurred by agricultural water users and domestic water users. We would like to answer that question because we are sure he is not the only person interested in
the property. Unfortunately none of those qualities can be said of the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Its current state of neglect
the answer. Domestic water users are bearing the brunt of the costs of new infrastructure projects, such as the Duteau Creek water treatment plant. As a result of these capital projects, domestic water rates have increased by about 300 per cent since 2002. Although agricultural water demand is seasonal, it accounts for about 60 per cent of the total water demand, leaving about 40 per cent for domestic use. However, the water cost allocation for 2015 for domestic users is $15,024,779 and for agricultural users, it is $922,668. Because the agricultural and domestic water lines are not split residential users are paying for very expensive water to be sprayed on fields and used for livestock. We don't object to subsidizing agriculture to some extent, since they provided significant water licenses to the potable water customers, but we do object heartily to providing this expensive, treated water for agricultural use where it is not necessary. Kathleen and Hugh Cameron CHARITIES SHOULD CO-OPERATE I read with interest about two local organizations doing great work — the Upper Room Mission and the Gleaners. The article about the mission indicated that they could use more donations for their meal programs. The article about the Gleaners stated how they provide dehydrated soup mix that gets sent all over the world to provide meals in Third World countries.
and absence of care is absolutely deplorable, and the City of Vernon should be ashamed to call it their city's cemetery. I am aware that even though the city owns the property, they contract out the care and maintenance of the grounds to a private business. Does the city not check up on their contracts to confirm the work they are paying for is actually being done? All of Vernon's parks, school grounds, sports fields and city hall grounds all show green, maintained grounds. I appreciate that water restrictions are in place, as that is the case in many other cities. I live in Kamloops and both of our cemeteries are green and beautifully groomed, as is Salmon Arm's and Kelowna's. Come on Vernon, is this the way you honour your deceased senior population who have chosen and paid dearly to be laid to rest in your city and cemetery? Cindy Valhalla
It just occurred to me that perhaps the Gleaners might be inspired to provide a small portion of their soup mix to the mission. After all, doesn't charity begin at home? Donna Woodward SWAN TRIBUTE A friend of mine recently passed away. His name was Marven Berkholtz. Many of you have probably seen or chatted with him at the fountain in Polson Park. He was the one with the Big Canadian flag on his "hog." He loved feeding the birds and they just seemed to flock to him. One of his wishes was to see swans again in Polson Park but he had no idea as to how to go about it and neither do I. If someone could offer me suggestions, I would really appreciate it. Joan Zimmer DOGS In reply to the excellent letter by Ron Schwartz, if dog owners were made to provide a DNA sample when applying for a licence, and a program was in place to collect and analyze the excrement, it would be unarguable. The offending dog owner would have no recourse. He must pay the fine, which should be substantial. Who will pay for the lab analysis you say? Why of course, the dog owner. If something like this isn't done, we will be having this discussion 50 years from now. We all know the percentage of dog owners who pick up after their dog and actually carry it to their residence to dispose of is very low. T. Smith

Country artist to give a peachy performance Lake Country food bank to benefit from show in Oyama’s The Orchard Morning Star Staff
Kelowna country artist Gorden James has made a name for himself as an artist and as an all around great guy. That will ring true when James plays the hills above Oyama at The Orchard Friday. He is donating $5 from every ticket sold for his concert to the Lake Country food bank. Co-presented with the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan, the outdoor show features the accomplished singer/songwriter, who describes his style as urban country, easy listening, with a touch of the blues. When James isn’t performing, he spends his time as a volunteer for hospice and doing shows at the cancer lodge. He also has written a song for Soles4Souls, an organization that collects and donates shoes to people that need them in Canada and around the world. In 2012, James was selected as one of 30 artists to appear on County Music Television Canada’s, Big in a Small Town, which featured local musicians from communities across Canada. “They emailed me and asked me to audition,” said James from
his Kelowna home. “They picked 30 artists from across Canada, two of them from B.C. It was a really cool experience. All the staff and crew treated us like gold. It gave my album, Heart of the Matter, great exposure.” James, who won a songwriting competition in 2002 sponsored by Factor, CMT and country radio across the nation, released his debut album Heart of the Matter, in 2007. It continues to get airplay across Canada and overseas. He has also released a new EP, Near You. James has performed everywhere from large concerts to store openings – and is also a regular at the Music on the Patio summer series at the clubhouse at Predator Ridge Golf Resort (James played there Tuesday and is scheduled for a return performance Aug. 18). “When they want something small, it’s usually just me who performs,” said James. “When it’s a larger event, like the Dancin’ Barefoot Music Festival in Peachland, then the whole Good Guys Band shows up.” Gates to Friday’s concert open at 6 p.m. with James taking the stage at 7:30 p.m. $5 from each ticket will go towards the Lake Country food bank. Jim’s Place in Vernon is also donating pizza to be sold by the slice, with proceeds also going to the food bank. The Orchard is located at 14924 Middle Bench Rd., Oyama. Tickets and information are available at theorchardwebsite.com.

While pipe and military bands from around Canada march into Vernon for the second annual the Okanagan Military Tattoo this weekend, an Enderby musician is marching her way around Ottawa. Cpl. Blythe Heywood, formally a cadet with the B.C. Dragoons in Vernon, is a military musician who has been in the Canadian Armed Forces for two years. She is currently spending the summer with the band of the Ceremonial Guard, one of the most recognizable military units in Canada. “I am proud to carry on the family tradition of serving in the military like my brothers,” said Heywood, who plays French horn and grew up in Kingfisher, a community east of Enderby. “I’ve wanted to play with the ceremonial guard ever since I was a kid.”

He’ll give you one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready and four to go... to Enderby. Award winning Elvis Presley tribute artist Adam Fitzpatrick brings his Elvis Evolution show to Music by the River Sunday. Fitzpatrick performs the day after the Enderby Arts Festival, which takes place all day Saturday throughout downtown Enderby, said Diana Inselberg, vice president with the Enderby and District Arts Council, which is presenting both the arts festival and the concert. “Prepare to be dazzled by jumpsuits, glitz, great music and more on Sunday,” she said. Fitzpatrick is originally from Penticton and has won numerous awards since his career as an Elvis tribute artist began in 2008. It’s in his hometown where was named a finalist at the Penticton Elvis Festival, which he entered on a dare. Since then, Fitzpatrick has gained a worldwide reputation for his natural ability to capture the passion Presley had for music and the electrifying appeal he had on and off the stage. Fitzpatrick was a member of the popular Louisiana Hayride show, based in Salmon Arm, before he left to take on a busy schedule as a solo performer. He has been the grand champion of two of the biggest Elvis contests in the world, in San Diego, Calif. in 2012 and Penticton in 2013. Other recent accomplishments include winning the 2014 European Tribute to Elvis in Blackpool, England, being named the Las Vegas Elvis Festival grand champion, and the Las Vegas

Local makes her presence known in Ottawa Continued from A10
With their scarlet tunics and bearskin headdress, the Ceremonial Guard is best known for the changing of the guard, a top Ottawa summer attraction that for more than 50 years has thrilled thousands of visitors on Parliament Hill. The guard also provide sentries at the National War Memorial and at Rideau Hall, the official residence of Gov. Gen. David Johnston. Heywood has already gone through three weeks of intensive drill training, mastering precision movements while playing her instrument, maintaining a high standard of dress and deportment, and undergoing extensive physical fitness training. Fitted and tailored in the scarlet tunic and bearskin hat, she stands tall with other members of this prestigious band. During the summer, Blythe will also perform in Ceremonial Guard appearances around Eastern Ontario as well as the culmination event known as Fortissimo. Fortissimo is a military and musical spectacular event that takes place this weekend on the lawns of Parliament Hill. It features massed military bands, pipes and drums, musical guests and the soldiers of the Ceremonial Guard. So when the band leads the scarlet tunics
through the nation’s capital, remember there is an Enderby connection.

Torin Andrews, Ivy Murphy, Jayden Murphy, Cole Aarestad and Madeline Hackman have all received bursaries from the Sons of Scotland Camp Kildonnan #166. The Sons of Scotland is a benevolent association working to promote the Scottish arts and further the education of local youth (missing from photo is Allison Anderson, who also received a bursary). Camp Kildonnan Chief Terry Muir (right) said all funds raised by the local branch of Sons of Scotland, are put back into the community through these bursaries that the recipients will use to further their education in the Scottish arts, such as Highland dancing, bagpiping and drumming.

No chance to say goodbye
person devoid of hope and conscious of being so has ceased to belong to the future. — Camus Sometimes even to live is an act of courage. — Seneca I have been away. My mother’s nextdoor neighbour phones. At Mom’s apartment the paper has not been picked up for two days. No one answers the neighbour’s knock and Mom’s phone dr. April sanders goes repeatedly to voice mail. Do you think you could come? The neighbour is worried. My relationship with my mom (who lived with my family for 12 years before wanting more independence, a place of her own) is my anchor, forged in a trinity of love, respect and friendship, but lurking beneath that solid surface is a living, expanding, cancerous fear. I am all too aware of the dangerous precipices that rim her abyss; the secret acts she holds away from the light, the demon faces of depression and addiction, the ones that own her, the companions she abandons us all for and visits with increasing frequency.
second opinion
We have weathered crises before and there have been other calls with many interventions, other false alarms, and other times when I have successfully thrown her a rope to climb out of the void. But somehow today, I have a premonition. In many ways, this is the call I have waited for, feared, for most of my life. Recently, I dream that my mother, small and alone, is an astronaut walking in space. Her tether to the space station strains, frays, then severs. Against the blackness I see her alone, spinning, spinning away into the silence. Another time, I dream that I walk her quiet hallway, turn the lock of her door and call her name. In a spectral silence I hear no sound other than the echo of my voice. She and I discuss these dreams and she reassures me these are only dreams, not a part I will ever play in her drama. For me, I tell her, the painful part of the dreams is that we never get to say goodbye. In a state of altered reality I prepare to answer the neighbour’s call. I get into the car already aware that I move toward a different future, toward another destiny, different from the one I had planned, the one where my mother sees her grandchildren leave childhood, graduate from
school, university, marry, and have children of their own. They love her, depend on her, expect her to be there to share these moments. I am in a trance, the motions automatic in a hypnotic drive across town, but the mind is a swirling tornado erasing all sense and action save the solid stone of anger and betrayal that choke the throat and the fear, the omniscient fear that thickens every moment and compresses time in to a colossal weight, impossible for a daughter to bear. Perhaps I am wrong? Perhaps this is simply a false alarm and I am buoyed on the wings of hope once more. I take a deep breath and drive on. I arrive at the apartment I know so well and walk the quiet hallway. Routines and habits comfort me, so I do what I always do, I pick up the papers and the mail for my mother before I engage the lock, open the door. I call my mother’s name into silence and receive nothing more than the echo of my voice. I know that one step over the doorsill is the difference between premonition and reality and I feel my heart break, break into a thousand shards, shards that will bleed this day and forever. For me, the agony of my new reality is that my mother and I will never get to say goodbye.

Oyama Legion rewards local students Jack Williamson Special to The Morning Star
The Oyama Branch 189 of the Royal Canadian Legion had planned on giving out three $1,000 scholarships but when the four applications came in it was too difficult to decide from such very worthy and talented students, so a fourth was approved by the membership. On hand to accept the cheques at the June general meeting were Julia Anderson, Mikaela Schellenberg and Trevor Pearson. Shae Ashley McManus was unable to make the meeting. Julie will be attending Emily Carr University of Arts and design in September pursuing a bachelor of arts degree
and hopefully achieving a master’s degree as well. Her end goal is to become a fine arts instructor. Both of Julie’s grandfathers are Second World War veterans and were born in Oyama. Mikaela has been accepted to UBCO’s human kinetics program, with UBC Chancellor Scholar designation. She is going to become a physiotherapist, with the goal of helping various ages of people with disabilities or injuries at home and abroad. Many of Mikaela’s relatives are veterans of both the Second World War and Vimy Ridge. Trevor will be going to UBCO in September. He is going

He hopes it will become full time once he finishes his engineering degree. Trevor’s grandfather served in the Second World War in the European theatre, driving tank. His greatgrandfather served in the First World War in the North African British Imperial Army. ummer is in full swing, and with it comes warm weather, vacation time and a natural world in full bloom that you can take advantage of. It’s easier to eat healthily in the summer, with loads of gorgeous fruit and veggies in season. Between your own garden, farmers’ markets, roadside stands and the produce section at your local grocery store, there is never a betcathi Litzenberger ter time to pick up inexpensive fresh produce than the peak months of summer. This time of year we are looking for lighter and quick meals to prepare, and the two recipes I have for today are just that. This quick salmon dish is perfect for
kitchen wit & wisdom
a week night dinner. Serve with a side of sautéed spinach or the salad below, and a glass of pinot blanc — yum! The salad recipe is chock full of nutrients and taste, with a slight sweetness from the watermelon, and is sure to be another favourite this summer. Tomato Basil Salmon 2 (6 ounce) boneless salmon fillets 1 tablespoon dried basil 1 tomato, thinly sliced 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese Preheat oven to 375 degrees F Line a baking sheet with a piece of aluminum foil, and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Place the salmon fillets onto the foil, sprinkle with basil, top with tomato slices, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with the Parmesan cheese. Bake in the preheated oven until the salmon is opaque in the centre, and the Parmesan cheese is lightly browned on
top, about 20 minutes. Can be baked in a barbecue on indirect heat as well. Watermelon and Feta Salad with Arugula and Spinach 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 teaspoons white balsamic vinegar 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 2 cups arugula 2 cups baby spinach leaves 1 cup thinly sliced red onion 1 cup grape tomatoes, halved 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese 2 cups bite-sized watermelon chunks Whisk the olive oil, white balsamic vinegar and salt together in a small bowl; set aside. Combine the arugula, spinach, onions and tomatoes in a large salad bowl. Drizzle the vinaigrette over the salad mixture; toss to coat. Add the feta cheese and watermelon to serve.

Editor’s note: the following is from TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), a non-profit weight-loss support and wellness education organization. Watching your weight doesn’t have to sentence you to a life of water and diet drinks. You can still keep this summer sweet without lots of extra sugar and calories. Quench your thirst with these tasty suggestions. 1. Add orange, lemon, or even cucumber slices to sparkling water. 2. Cut your usual glass of lemonade in half and add sugar-free iced tea. 3. Freeze blueberries or raspberries in ice trays with water and add them to your next summer drink. 4. Chill out by mixing seedless watermelon, cranberry juice, and ice cubes in a blender. Serve with a slice of lime. 5. Steep a peach tea bag in boiling water, chill and add an orange slice. 6. Add a splash of pineapple juice to sparkling water and garnish with pineapple wedges and fresh mint leaves.
7. Make your own iced coffee by adding black coffee to ice and adding a splash of skim milk and a shot of sugar-free vanilla syrup or a packet of artificial sweetener. 8. Mix one part cranberry or pomegranate juice with two parts club soda, and garnish with fresh raspberries. 9. Steep two green tea bags in boiling water. Chill and serve on ice with a tablespoon of honey and a lemon wedge. 10 Make a tasty summer “mocktail.” Serve low sodium tomato juice on ice and mix with a teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce and a few dashes of hot sauce (depending on how spicy you want your drink). Add a celery stalk and a couple of green olives if you’d like. Founded more than 65 years ago, TOPS has about 150,000 members — male and female, age seven and older — in thousands of chapters throughout the United States and Canada. Visitors are welcome to attend their first TOPS meeting free of charge. Membership is affordable at just $36 per year in Canada, plus nominal chapter fees. Increasing the amount of U.S. tourists coming to the North Okanagan was a key issue discussed during a recent round table on tourism. More than a dozen representatives from the tourism sector joined Blake Richards, chairperson of the parliamentary caucus on tourism, during the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce event. “The Alberta MP noted that there has been renewed interest in the tourism caucus on Parliament Hill as representatives from all parties Dan Rogers realize how important tourism is to the country’s economy,” said Dan Rogers, chamber of commerce general manager. “Attendees raised concerns about the need to help promote small communities globally as there are limited resources they can tap into.” And while some operators have recently seen an increase in visitors from the U.S., some believe more can be down to promote tourism south of the border. Richards agreed and stated that the federal budget saw an increased investment in promoting Canada in the U.S. market. MLA Eric Foster also attended the forum as did Vernon Coun. Catherine Lord and officials from Tourism Vernon and various tourism-related businesses.

Military history focus of exhibit RICHARD ROLKE Morning Star Staff
RICHARD ROLKE/MORNING STAR
The Okanagan’s significant military contribution is front and centre. The Greater Vernon Museum has unveiled the Remembering A Few exhibit as part of the Okanagan Military Tattoo, which runs Saturday and Sunday. “We have taken some individuals with connections to the North Okanagan and we focused on them,” said Ron Candy, museum curator, of participants in the Boer War and the two world wars. “There are stories and artifacts associated with them.” Among the 15 people highlighted at the museum is Col. George Osborn, who served in Singapore and India at the turn of the 20th century and was also involved in the First World War. The Boer War took place in South Africa from 1899 to 1902. “There was an Okanagan contingent that left here and there was a recruiting office for Lord Strathcona’s Horse,” said Candy. Queen Victoria died in 1901, and to commemorate her reign, King Edward VII awarded special medals to Boer War veterans. “We have three of the medals. They’re really rare as only 100 were handed out,” said Candy. The First World War veterans highlighted in the exhibit include Guy Bagnall, the Ellison brothers and Allan Brooks, while among those from the Second World War are David Kinloch, Duke Procter, Ken May and Albert Saddleman Sr. Candy believes it’s timely to remind residents of local military accomplishments during the tattoo. “We’re not necessarily celebrating war, but remembering the sacrifices people made,” he said. “A lot of people died overseas and those who came back put their lives on hold.” The exhibit will be on display at the Greater Vernon Museum for the summer. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Okanagan Military Tattoo runs Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at Kal Tire Place. Lord Strathcona’s Horse Musical Ride will be at the Armstrong fairgrounds Friday at 7 p.m. For more information, go to www.okanagantattoo.ca.
Curator Ron Candy is urging local residents to learn more about military history at the Greater Vernon Museum. An exhibit on the Boer War and the two world wars has been launched in conjunction with the Okanagan Military Tattoo, which runs Saturday and Sunday in Vernon.

Those in the challenge were only allowed 15 minutes per bus. “It was a short time frame to inspect the buses,” said Brasseur. “Usually I take a couple of days to do a good job inspecting and fixing defects in a school bus.” Brasseur said finding out he won was a little overwhelming. “Usually I’m in the background, working away in the shop.” He received a $750 Snap On gift certificate (which he has already spent on tools) as well as an all expenses paid trip to Richmond, Virginia to take part in the America’s Best Technician Challenge in November. “There’s pressure on us,” said Brasseur. “It’s the first time Canadians are going to be taking part in the event so I’d better brush up on my skills.” Frank Marasco, school district operations manager, was proud of Brasseur’s performance. ”Mike has been with the district for about three years and is becoming an excellent technician for us,” said Marasco. “The quality and precision of his work gets better every day, he has truly become a key member of our team in ensuring the safety of the children in our care. I know you will do Canada and our district proud in Virginia.”

Vipers trade Bauer to Cowichan KEVIN MITCHELL Sports Editor
Holding a full house, Vernon Viper head coach/GM Mark Ferner unloaded one of his veteran cards Tuesday by trading forward Mackenzie Bauer to the Cowichan Valley Capitals for future considerations. Bauer, who turns 20 in January, was hampered by injuries last season and pocketed Mackenzie Bauer five goals and nine points in 27 games with the Snakes. The Three Hills, Alta. product added one goal and an assist in 11 B.C. Hockey League playoff games. Bauer was chosen in the eighth round by the Brandon Wheat Kings in the 2011 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. He compiled 56 goals in two years of Midget with the UFA Bisons in Strathmore, Alta. “He’s a great kid and a good player, but the reality is we have too many bodies now and we’re going to have too many bodies in camp
(in late August),” said Ferner. “We’re going to have three or four teams in camp and the returning kids know the kids coming in are going to push them for jobs and the kids coming in know there are jobs available if they earn them. It’s going to be a very competitive camp and it’s all about putting the best team on the ice.” Vernon has eight forwards, two d-men and goalie Jarrod Schamerhorn as returnees. The Vipers open the exhibition season Friday, Aug. 28 in Salmon Arm versus the Silverbacks. The same two teams meet the next night at Kal Tire Place. Vernon visits the Prince George Spruce Kings Friday, Sept. 4 and host the Kings the next night. Meanwhile, Prince George has acquired the CJHL playing rights to D Mitch Meek from the West Kelowna Warriors in exchange for the BCHL-CHL listing rights to F Luke Harrison. Meek was traded earlier this month from the Vipers to the Warriors for D Mac Ferner, who is Mark’s son. Harrison is a 19-yearold West Kelowna native who spent four years in the WHL. He rang up 12 goals and 23 points with the Kamloops Blazers last season.

Former Kalamalka Laker Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe helped Canada post an 81-73 victory over the U.S. Monday at Ryerson University’s Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto. A few clutch free throws helped ensure the gold medal for the first time in Canadian women’s basketball history at the Pan American Games. It was the first gold by a senior men’s or women’s team in any major international competition. “I might break into tears,” said Lizanne Murphy, an eight-year national team veteran. “I can’t even describe the feeling. Playing for your country, winning at home with this crowd, it’s like no other feeling.” Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe In the final, RaincockEkunwe grabbed a defensive rebound during her 2:18 on the floor. The Canadians led by as many as 17 points in front of a feverish crowd of about 3,300 flag-waving fans. The U.S. pulled within five points twice in the fourth quarter, and trailed 78-73 with 18 seconds left. Canada was led by Kia Nurse who poured in 33 points and Natali Achonwa scored 13 for Canada. Raincock-Ekunwe attended Simon Fraser University from 2009-13 and will play for TSV 1880 Wasserburg (Germany) this fall after starring for BG Donau-Ries Angels in Nordlingen, Germany. Venom put stop to Tigers’ offence TYLER LOWEY
Morning Star Staff
The van is still running, but the check engine light came on for the Vernon Source for Sports Tigers following a 17-10 loss to the Kamloops Venom Sunday night at Memorial Arena. The Venom hold a 2-0 series stranglehold in the best-of-five Thompson Okanagan Junior Lacrosse League finals. “Coming into the series, we thought we were going to walk all over them, so we are a bit on edge right now,” said Tigers’ road captain Darrell Landels. Game 3 went 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night at Kal Tire Place. The finals haven’t followed the same script as the regular season for the Cats. After rolling through the regular season and breezing past the Armstrong Shamrocks in the first round, the Tigers have hit a wall. “We haven’t been playing the type of lacrosse that we were during the regular season,” said Tigers’ assistant coach Tyler Plante. “We haven’t been aggressive. We let Kamloops make all the moves and just react to them.” The Tigers finished with the league’s second highest scoring offence, but has been held to 12 and 10 goals. “It’s frustrating, but I still believe in them. If any team can do this, it’s these guys,” said Tigers’ head coach Chris Scabar. Landels led the Tigers with four goals in Game 2 and added: “We just haven’t figured out how they are attacking us on defence. We are going to try and run some new plays and hopefully something works.” Ethan Anderson supplied a hat trick,
while Darrell’s brother, Thomas earned one goal, along with Quintin Harrish and Braden Barr. The Venom’s regular season scoring leader Jerome Thorne was at it again with 5+4 in Game 2. Snakes’ captain Blaine Boomer returned from the Langley Thunder in the B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League earlier in the year and supplied a hat trick. “They’re a fiery team. They showed a lot of intensity and heart, but I think we’re just breaking them down mentally and physically,” said Boomer. The Tigers cut the deficit to 10-7 in the third, but the Venom attack was too much to handle. They recorded a sevengoal third period. The Capri Insurance Men’s 45+ Soccer League teams appeared headed for a scoreless draw until the 70th minute when fiery winger Steve Milne connected. Fun-loving winger John Davies stole the ball at misfield, dished it to striker John Orton, who fed Milne on the right flank. Vincze got his hand on the ball before it went top corner for a 1-0 Camel win. Dave Dutcher recorded the shutout with a few solid stops. Iain Butler, Ken Kranenborg and Neil McPhee were solid on the Humpbacks’ defence. Orton and fellow striker Gord Howard recorded several hard shots on net, while central midfielder Paul Morgan hit the parking lot with two or three offerings after dancing around a series of defenders. Bridge by Phillip Alder LEAVE DECLARER DOWN AND SURROUNDED Denis Diderot, an 18thcentury French philosopher, art critic and writer, said, “Watch out for the fellow who talks about putting things in order. Putting things in order always means getting other people under your control.” When you are a bridge defender, you hope to get declarer under your control. Then you will probably be able to defeat the contract. Sometimes, it must be admitted, it will be more important to get partner under control, either by signaling clearly or by getting on play to make the lethal lead. Which applies in today’s deal? South is in three no-
trump, and West leads the club jack. North, knowing of a combined 25-28 points, was right to raise to three no-trump. West’s opening lead marks South with the club queen. So, if East takes the first trick with his club ace and returns the suit, declarer will take at least nine tricks: one club, six diamonds and two spades. If South needs the spade finesse, East knows it will succeed. The defenders must win the first five tricks. And the only way to do that is with one club and four hearts. But to which heart should East shift at trick two? If East leads a low heart and South plays low, the contract makes. Instead, East should switch to his
heart jack. This is called a surrounding play because East has dummy’s top heart, the 10, surrounded by his jack and nine, and he has another, higher, nontouching heart honor in the king. Then South has no answer; he must lose those five tricks.

Meadors
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Brandon Wayne Meadors on April 2, 2015 in Lumby, at 33 years of age. Brandon had an amazing sense of humor, he loved to make people laugh with his silly faces and actions. He moved to BC when he was 9 years old with his family and just loved the lakes and streams to fish, swim and cliff dive with his friends when he got older. He had a great group of friends around him when he was paralyzed at the age of 19 from a motorbike accident in 2001, and it didn’t slow him down much. Brandon loved to hunt, target shoot, play video games and help others as much as he could. He will be sadly missed, by his mother Lorraine Meadors (Gordon A James) of Lumby, his father Ronald Meadors (Vicky & her son Grandee) of Vernon, his sister and her husband, Sheila and Stig Larsson, his two nephews Ethan and Kolby, stepnephew Alex all of Vernon, and Brandon’s grandparent’s Leo and Georgia Flobert of Airdrie, AB, his very close friends and many Aunt’s, Uncles and cousins. Brandon is predeceased by his Grandparent’s William and Lois Meadors, his Aunt Debbie Meadors, Great Aunt’s Mary-Jane Muddle, and Bonnie Vert, along with Great Uncle’s Cecil Barr, Vernon and James Flobert. A celebration of Brandon’s life is being held upstairs at the Lumby Legion, Saturday, July 25th at 3pm.
