Countdown on to skate park demolition Public meeting set for Thursday to consider potential new sites Katherine Engqvist News Gazette staff

Rumours are flying almost as fast as some of the skateboarders at the West Shore Skate Park on Kelly Road in Langford. But the fate of park is sealed and demolition is slated to begin on Sept. 30. The 21-acre property that the park sits on was originally owned by School District 62 and was sold to Sobey’s Inc. as part of a $23.25 million deal back in the spring of last year. The school district has

been leasing the land back since the sale. The demolition of the park was originally scheduled for this spring, but was pushed back after some protest from the public, who wanted it kept open for the summer months. After that initial wave it seems that public interest in the park has died down, with not much progress being made in finding a new location. Some speculate that interest in finding a new location has simmered because the park is still standing and many residents don’t know it will be removed. “Until recently I didn’t know,” said Ryan McGlashan, manager of the Langford location of the Heritage Board Supply Company. He said the new owners were not

interested in keeping the park, and taking on the risks and insurance that came with it. He said a lot of myths had been flying around the community about the negative aspects of the park, especially in regards to drug and alcohol use, which some are blaming for its removal. But McGlashan said the new owners would not have been interested in keeping it even if it had been operating flawlessly since its inception. “A lot of issues that stemmed from the park weren’t from users, but from people nearby.” McGlashan suggested that building it next to a secondary school may not have been the best choice. While there is no plan in place yet to replace it, McGlashan is part

of a coalition that is forming, and still looking for members, to find a new home for the park somewhere on the West Shore. But he notes that it is still in its infancy and members haven’t started approaching potential sites yet. “One of the major things that hasn’t dawned on people is that people aren’t going to stop skating,” he said, adding that once the park is gone they’ll likely end up in places they aren’t supposed to be. McGlashan wants to see the park rebuilt somewhere that’s easily accessible for users, since many of them are children or young adults from low-income families without access to a vehicle, he said. Bobbi Neal, community development co-ordinator with West

Shore Parks and Recreation, is working with the coalition, or society as she called it, in these early stages to get started and find a new location for the park. After that, she said they will start approaching municipalities and start working on a fundraising plan. “We want the public to be aware,” she said, adding that there had been a lot of interest in having another park. “We need to come together and find a solution.” The coalition’s next meeting is scheduled for tomorrow (July 23) at 8 p.m. at the Heritage Board Supply Company’s Langford location, 895 Langford Pkwy. The Westside committee had asked private landowners who might be interested in providing lands for the project to come forward, as a way of not missing any opportunities, Hamilton said. Last month the committee, which represents View Royal, Colwood, Langford, Esquimalt, and Esquimalt First Nation, released a list of 20 possible wastewater treatment facility sites for consideration and public input. That list originally included five locations in Esquimalt, one in View Royal, two in Langford and 12 in Colwood. Any one or combination of up to four properties could be considered. So, after a few conversations with West Shore RCMP, a plan was formulated to revitalize the park and make it more appealing for residents. Waters noted that new lighting, signage, benches, pathways and fencing have already been installed, and shrubs removed

to open the park up and help make it more inviting. Danbrook Park is also part of a new initiative by the City to make more parks dog friendly, and will be advertised as an offleash dog park. Besides making the park fully fenced, the City has also added a dog waste bag dispenser. “There’s no place for people in

the (Langford) core to take their dogs,” Seaton said emphatically, pointing out the importance of this project. Many nearby condo residents own dogs, he added, but their options have been very limited in the area, given that dogs off leash are banned on land owned by the Sooke School District. katie@goldstreamgazette.com

Suspicious fires burn in Highlands House and shed destroyed Called to an abandoned house in the 1900-block of Millstream Rd., police and the Highlands Fire Department found a shed fully engulfed in flames just after 3 a.m. on July 15. The fire spread to the house, destroying both structures. No one was injured. A second fire was discovered under a wooden bulletin board at the corner of Lost Lake and Millstream roads. The fire, according to West Shore RCMP, appeared to be intentionally set and was still smouldering. A suspect arriving and running from the scene prior to the first fire was caught on video surveillance by a business neighbouring the property. West Shore RCMP’s Major Crime Unit has taken

Practise caution around the water Nothing beats the heat quite like taking a dip, whether it’s inching into the water up to your knees, taking a couple of cooling strokes or enjoying a full-blown invigorating swim. And with no end in sight to our unseasonably hot summer, more and more people are taking the plunge this year. The West Shore is blessed with a variety of lakes, water holes, pools and stretches of shoreline that entice locals and visitors alike. At the risk of putting a damper on anyone’s idea of innocent fun, it’s important to remember that safety should always come first before you venture into or onto the water. Two recent devastating accidents on Vancouver Island, one at Sproat Lake which claimed the life of a Langford man and the other which saw a young rugby player visiting from England drown in Shawnigan Lake, underscore the need to remind people of the potential for deadly consequences when playing in or on the water. Thetis Lake, a favourite spot for people around the region to cool off or hike, sadly has seen six drownings since 2004. Anyone there two years ago when a young foreign student drowned can still hear the cries of horrified friends unable to believe how fast the tragedy unfolded. Similarly, the case of a young Taiwanese student who died when she stumbled off a cliff, is a stark reminder that even being near the water can be enough to claim a life. And when a young man drowned trying to swim to the island in the middle of the lake nine years ago, the piercing wails of his grief-stricken friend echoed across the lake on a beautiful September day. So please, be mindful that you can’t take too many precautions on or near the water, whatever the circumstances. And remember, alcohol and water conspire to form a deadly cocktail that always makes the raft appear to be closer or that dive from a cliff less daunting. We encourage you to responsibly enjoy all the pleasures the water has to offer this summer. But please, take a few minutes while you’re checking your I-phone or waiting for the sunscreen to dry to wade over to redcross.ca for lifesaving advice in, on or around the water. What do you think? The E&N railway line is approaching 130 years old and in that time, it has seen a fair amount of change. Depending on how you look at it, those changes have been both good and bad. We need to think of funding this corridor as a positive investment in our transportation future, much like cycling paths, highways and airports, although the latter two have huge negative environmental and social impacts. The E&N is more than just a railway, it’s a transportation corridor with huge potential to be the backbone of a green transportation system that incorporates transit, rail, car pooling, cycling and walking. Simply calling for the corridor to be converted into a trail adds nothing constructive to the transportation debate, since a trail is already being built alongside. People who aren’t able to cycle, drive or use the bus would have the ability to travel between urban areas independently. The trail and highway do not accommodate these people’s needs. Imagine the jobs that could be created both directly and indirectly, in the areas of construction, maintenance, tourism, retail, green manufacturing, etc. Stations in every community can be returned to what they once were – focal points of civic pride, public gathering places and sources of economic prosperity, linked by transit, cycling and walking trails and supported by dense development and green spaces. But for all of this to happen, a proper plan is needed, one formed by engaging the public, local business and community groups, First Nations and local governments, and partnering with the private sector, provincial and federal governments. It sounds a bit unusual for someone barely out of their teens to be referred to as a triathlon veteran, but Nichola Kennell can certainly be considered so. The former Langford and View Royal resident, who turns 21 in September, has competed in the Sri Chinmoy Self Transcendence Triathlon a number of times and will make her third appearance in the Olympic distance race on Aug. 2 in and around Elk Lake. “I’ve loved it from a young age,” says Kennell, who grew up doing many types of sports, but latched onto triathlon in Grade 2 with the encouragement of her dad, Steve, an avid cyclist and volunteer youth triathlon coach. A competitor who has been gradually transitioning to the more gruelling Olympic distance from the sprint, Nichola counts Victoria-based

triathlon stars Simon Whitfield, Paula Finlay and Kirsten Sweetland among her inspirations. She trains with legendary Victoria runner Jim Finlayson, and Lifesport Coaching’s Paul Regensburg on the swim and cycling aspects of her event, but gives kudos to her dad for helping her climb the steep triathlon mountain. “My dad’s one of my biggest supporters, he got me involved in triathlons and he’s been my strongest hand, guiding me along the way,” she says. Kennell, who competed nationally as a junior but these days races directly against more seasoned athletes, is a natural runner who uses such events as the Island Race Series, GoodLife Fitness half marathon and TC10K to train. She finished 19th overall among women in last year’s Sri and fourth in her category (age 20 to 24), which happened to include race winner Alison Hooper, a former national junior women’s champion and Canada Summer Games gold medallist. While Kennell’s best Olympic distance time came in her first attempt at the Sri Chinmoy race, she hopes to

shave some minutes off this time with enhanced training. “New techniques are always coming up,” she says, noting that preparing for an Olympic distance event takes far more training than the sprint. “I’m getting the routine down for taking in nutrition for something like the (40-kilometre) bike. In the sprint you don’t really need a whole lot; a bit of Gatorade and water will suffice.” The Sri Chinmoy Olympic distance event begins with a 1,500-metre swim in Elk Lake, followed by a 40K bike ride out West Saanich Road, then finishing with a 10K loop of the chip trail around Elk and Beaver lakes. The sprint event cuts all of those distances in half. “I like the course. I run Elk and Beaver all the time, so it’s like home turf to me,” Kennell says. “Definitely it’s a wonderful race to do; it’s so laid back, but it’s so organized at the same time.” While reports surfaced earlier this year that 2015 may be the final Self Transcendence Triathlon and Duathlon in Victoria, race director Sumitra McMurchy says no decision has been on the event’s future.

However, a formal announcement will be made following the Aug. 2 event, she adds.
