Message from the President The Okanagan Military Tattoo 2014 was an overwhelming success. The mission we had set for ourselves was twofold: ensure we put on a good show for our patrons, and make sure the performers had a great time. We succeeded on both fronts. It was a challenge with 500 performers, but with 150 volunteers chipping in as well as the local, regional, provincial and national agencies and individuals that stepped up to the plate financially, we did it. Now we are ready for the Okanagan Military Tattoo 2015 with an even bigger and more ambitious program.
are honoured to have two big international show bands, the Delta Police Pipe band and the Winnipeg Police Pipe band. These bands will be joined by the pipe bands from Kelowna, Vernon and Kamloops. Filling out the program will be local dancers and singers that will make you laugh and bring emotional tears to your eyes. We are very happy to team up with the IPE folks in Armstrong to bring another Tattoo related event to our area. This event will be staged in the Grandstand Arena of the IPE grounds Friday evening, July 24th and will be centered around the Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) Musical Ride. The LSH will be joined on this big stage by other Tattoo performers and some new and exciting groups from around the province.
Our old friends, the Royal Canadian Artillery Band from Edmonton will start the Week of the Tattoo off with a free-to-the-public concert in the main street of Silver Star Mountain, Sunday July 19 at 7pm. The RCA Band will also present their funk/rock Soul Orchestra at the Civic Sounds Norm Crerar Thursday evening at City Hall and will These will be great shows and my play a part in the show Friday evening in Armstrong hat is off to the performers that have committed to at the IPE grounds. Royal Canadian Artillery Band performs at Silver Star Mountain The Royal Canadian Artillery (RCA) Band has a long tradition of providing musical support to the Canadian Armed Forces. They have been based in Edmonton since 1997, but their existence can be traced back to the end of the 19th century. It is one of six Regular Force bands stationed throughout Canada, with a complement of 35 full-time musicians. From military parades, ceremonial occasions, and government functions, to formal concerts or entertaining their fellow soldiers, the RCA Band can be heard performing in a variety of musical styles nationally and abroad. International highlights include performances in the United States, South Korea, Sweden, The Netherlands, and BosniaHerzegovina. The RCA Band, in Vernon for the Okanagan Military Tattoo 2015, will be staying at Silver Star Mountain from July 18 to July 27. During this time, they will be working with the Vernon Cadet Summer Training Course (VCSTC), specifically the cadets in the brass/reed bands. The RCA Band will take the opportunity while in the area to present two concerts free to the public. The first concert will be at Silver Star Mountain, Sunday, July 19 starting at 7 PM and a second concert July 23 at the Civic Sounds. Folks should bring lawn chairs and a jacket to Silver Star in case of cool weather. In the event of inclement weather, the Silver Star concert will be performed in the 180 seat NATC theater.
Under the guidance of Sgt. Caron and Cpl. Sheppard, the RCMP Ceremonial Troop does on foot what the RCMP Musical Ride does on horseback. The Troop is recruited from detachments across British Columbia and goes through weeks of rigorous training. The synchronized marching and maneuvers on the floor are all done to music.

VANCOUVER NAVY VETERANS BAND The Vancouver Naval Veterans Band is unique in Canada, the Commonwealth and likely the entire world. That’s because the founding members of the 20 plus member unit served in either the Royal Canadian Navy or in Canada’s Merchant Marine during World War II. Many were involved in the later stages of the grim Battle of the Atlantic, serving either in escort war ships or in cargo ships as Canada and the US provided vital convoys of food-stuffs, war materiel and personnel that constituted Britain’s lifeline. The Band’s founding members formed the Unit 22 years ago. Soon after, to preserve their proud heritage, they began recruiting younger
naval veterans plus civilian musicians. The Band is proud to serve as the de-facto home unit for HMCS Discovery in Vancouver which has given the unit a home and band room since its inception. Given the unique history of the Vancouver Naval Veteran’s Band, they have been selected to play a lead role in the annual “Tribute to the Veterans” portion of our program. The Band often conducts sing-a-longs during many of its varied appearances and during the Okanagan Military Tattoo, they will play a couple of sets with the 75 voice Okanagan Tattoo Choir.

Okanagan Military Tattoo - A Celebration of Traditions
Band of the 15th Field Artillery Regiment Although there have been military bands affiliated with militia units in the city of Vancouver since early in the twentieth century, the Band of the Fifteenth Field Artillery Regiment has only been active since 1933. In that year, the band was established as the Band of 15th Field Brigade, Canadian Artillery and attached to an artillery unit stationed in Stanley Park. In 1953, the band took its present title as the Band of the Fifteenth Field Artillery Regiment, Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery and moved with the regiment into the Bessborough Armoury in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood. Since 2000, the band has operated from the 39 Canadian Brigade Group Garrison Headquarters building near Jericho Beach on English Bay. In 2016, the band will move into a purpose built music facility currently under construction in the Seaforth Armoury in the city’s Armoury District when the Jericho Lands are returned to a consortium of first nations. The band provides musical support to all fifteen Canadian Army Reserve regiments based in British Columbia and routinely does more than one hundred performances annually.
Since 1920 the Winnipeg Police Pipe Band has electrified and stirred both national and international audiences with their masterful play and striking full dress uniform.

Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) were masters at throwing a loop over the head of bogged horses and pulling them to safety. Perhaps the best demonstration of their cowboy skills came at Paardekop, where a band of 500 fresh horses from Natal broke out of a kraal and galloped off across the veldt. With whoops of glee the Strathconas grabbed their ropes and rode after them, succeeding in lassoing half of them. The remainder were rounded up and driven back to the corral. In return for their cowboy services, which could not have been accomplished without lassos and stock saddles, they were given the pick of the remounts. From then When Britain became embroiled in the South African War, Lord on, the British maintained a healthy respect for these cowboys from Strathcona offered to raise and equip a mounted regiment in Canada “the colonies”. at his own expense. The regiment, named Strathcona’s Horse, was The tenacity, stamina and initiative of the rugged westerners were ideal to consist of three squadrons, one to be raised in Manitoba, one in to combat Afrikaners’ unorthodox, guerilla tactics. Because of these the Northwest Territories (present day Alberta and Saskatchewan) and qualities and their superb horsemanship, the Strathconas were made one in British Columbia. Commanded by Superintendent Sam Steele scouts for the advancing army and were often the first to make contact of the North West Mounted Police, Strathcona’s Horse was recruited with the enemy, resulting in dozens of casualties. Twelve members of from the Mounted Police and from the ranches of western Canada. Strathcona’s Horse lost their lives in action in South Africa. The ranching community of British Columbia was well represented In January 2001, the regiment was recalled to Canada and returned with Kamloops and the Okanagan Valley contributing a large number via London where they met their patron, Lord Strathcona and received of experienced horsemen, mostly hard-riding cowboys. medals from King Edward VII in person. The regiment was wined and Donald Smith started out as an apprentice clerk for the Hudson’s Bay Company and, through hard work and perseverance rose to be in charge of all the company’s lands in North America. Eventually he left the company to invest in various businesses including railways, becoming one of the major partners in the Canadian Pacific Railway. In this role, he was the man who drove the last spike at Craigellachie in 1885. He became Canadian High Commissioner in London in 1896 and was named a British peer the next year, taking the title “Lord Strathcona”
On March 18, 1900, a total of 537 officers and men and 599 horses sailed from Halifax. The regiment arrived in Cape Town after a rough sea voyage that took the lives of 120 horses. Initially, the British cavalry looked upon the Strathconas with some amusement because they all rode western saddles and carried lassos, part of the standard issue that Sam Steele had insisted upon. However, the ropes proved to be invaluable in capturing wild horses on the veldt and the ex-cowboys
dined in London and went out to the theatre every night, something simple cowboys found a distinct contrast from their humble lifestyle at home. As you will see, Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) is still in existence, though most of the horses have been replaced by armoured vehicles. The regiment has recently served in Afghanistan.

Lord Strathcona’s Horse Musical Ride The Okanagan Military Tattoo Society is delighted to have members of the Mounted Troop of Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) participate in both the Tattoo on July 25 and 25 at Kal Tire Place in Vernon and at the Musical Ride in Armstrong on Friday July 24 at the IPE Fairgrounds. For obvious reasons, the 20 odd horses accompanying the Troop will not be allowed on the stage area at Kal Tire Place, however, members of the Troop will join in the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the annual “Tribute to the Veterans”. A mounted guard in full ceremonial uniform will be stationed at the main entrance to Kal Tire Place. In addition to participating in the Tattoo, the Mounted Troop will perform their world famous Musical Ride and mounted cavalry drills at the IPE fairgrounds in Armstrong on Friday, July 24 at 7:00pm. The current Strathcona Mounted Troop was formed in 1977. The original Ceremonial Mounted Troop was formed in 1923 as a means of honouring and maintaining the Cavalry traditions of the Lord Strathcona’s Horse. The original troop was disbanded in 1939 when the Regiment moved to armoured vehicles as Canada joined the world in preparations for World War II. The Regiment is a regular force armoured unit of the Canadian Forces. The Strathcona’s primary fighting vehicle is the Leopard Tank. It’s reconnaissance squadron utilizes the Coyote of the Light Armored Vehicle (LAV) family. The Strathconas are the only regular force armoured unit in Western Canada. Troop members are full time soldiers and volunteer for one or two year terms much like their predecessors did in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Their daily schedule concentrates on the care of their mounts and equipment, and in Cavalry Drills and training. In addition, they are responsible to remain ready for active duty, and must therefore participate in specific training. The mounts of the Strathcona Mounted Troop are provided through the Ceremonial Mounted Troop Foundation and remain Foundation property. The mounts are neither purchased by nor maintained by the Canadian Forces or the Department of National Defence.
