Kevin Rintoul met his future wife, Daphne, when he was 16. The childhood sweethearts’ relationship began with a friendship between two families – their parents were good friends

already sharing camping, fishing and church trips together with their kids. Daphne’s brother was Kevin’s best friend when they met over Christmas holidays. Her father, Ernie Wiens, made an impact on his future son-in-law. “I have known Ernie since he was the protective father for

Daphne dating as a (teenager),” Rintoul said, laughing. “We’ve known each other for a (very) long time.” He reminisced about his active father-in-law from a time nearly 20 years ago, before Wiens received a deadly diagnosis after he began tripping over his own feet. Once

an active cyclist who worked as superintendent of special services at the Sooke School Board helping special needs students, Wiens ironically found it increasingly challenging to help himself. He had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS.

The diagnosis came as a shock. “It was absolutely staggering, I had no idea,” Rintoul said. “To do something simple like get to the washroom and brush his teeth was a 10-minute ordeal.”

Raging driver leads RCMP on manhunt Suspect allegedly pointed shotgun at other driver Katherine Engqvist News Gazette staff

A string of incidents led West Shore RCMP to spend several hours pursuing a suspect on Sunday. Police had received information that a man was driving under the influence of drugs, had pointed a shotgun at a member of the public and was posing an ongoing significant risk to other motorists. The original complainant identified the suspect and his vehicle, and stated that the man was behaving aggressively and was believed to be under the influ-

ence of drugs. At approximately 3:50 p.m. on Sunday, West Shore RCMP spotted the vehicle travelling on the Trans Canada Highway near Aspen Road off the Malahat and attempted to stop the suspect, who sped off. Officers chose not to pursue based on traffic volume and patterns at that time. At around 6 p.m. police received a complaint that a man driving a similar vehicle had pointed a shotgun at another driver during a “road rage” incident. Officers located the vehicle in the area of Leigh Road and Goldstream Avenue in Langford. Once again, officers tried to stop the vehicle but the driver fled, reaching speeds of up to 140 km/h once out on the Trans Canada Highway. A short time later the man

surrendered to police without incident, after becoming stuck in traffic on Island Highway near Wale Road in Colwood. Officers recovered a shotgun and a large knife from the vehicle. Still later, West Shore RCMP received information that a similar vehicle had backed into another vehicle, repeatedly at the intersection of Jacklin Road and Jenkins Avenue just before 6 p.m. Sunday. The driver of the second vehicle sought medical treatment for whiplash at a hospital and was released. The arrested man, well-known to police, was held in custody and was due in Western Communities Provincial Court on Monday to face firearms, dangerous driving, drugs and other Criminal Code charges. katie@goldstreamgazette.com

Sooke Road crash leaves one in hospital A woman in her mid-40s remained in hospital early this week with serious injuries, after she was involved in a head-on crash with a Shaw van on Sooke Road in Langford. RCMP are still investigating the collision, which closed Sooke Road in both directions between Happy Valley and Luxton roads for roughly six hours on Friday. Belmont Park is getting a $2.8-million facelift, thanks to an infusion of federal funds. John Duncan, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, announced at CFB Esquimalt last week that part of a $17.8-million infrastructure investment is earmarked for the construction of new residential units and the renovation of some existing ones in Belmont Park, which houses military personnel in Colwood. The majority of the funding will go toward repairing and extending one of two dry dock caissons, large watertight gates used to seal the dry dock at the “… upgrades naval base. The Friends of Tower Point are marshalling the troops to attend the July 20 Metchosin council meeting.

Area resident Ken Farquharson says they are still trying to convince council to exercise its right to ask for about a half an acre of land from the developers of a proposed 10-acre subdivision at the end of Olympic View Drive, in lieu of cash. That’s about five per cent of the land, and would allow for a trail that would circuit Tower Point Park and would also provide a second access. Farquharson, who has been

involved with the Friends of Tower Point since its inception, said the results of a survey that group members took earlier this year indicate Tower Point Park is a popular destination that draws visitors from throughout the Capital Region. Metchosin council decided at its June 15 meeting to conduct a second study into the issue, the results of which are expected to be made available

for the July 20 meeting. “I hope lots of people attend,” Farquharson said. He said a member of the Friends of Tower Point approached the developer, Ridley Brothers, in June, but was told they were not interested in discussing the matter at that time. “I had never witnessed that before,” he said. “That is the crazy thing about ALS, from outward appearances and cognitively, he is completely (the same). However, now he has these huge, huge physical challenges.” About a year ago, the Rintouls got an up-close and personal look at the challenges of living with the disease, known in past decades as Lou Gehrig’s disease, when they served a short stint as caregivers for Wiens when his wife Alice fell ill. It was then that they realized the effects of the disease were more far-reaching than they first thought. Wiens’ struggles are even greater now. “We are lucky he has a slow-progressing stream. It’s awesome, because we have him longer than we ever

anticipated,” Daphne said. “But the downside is waiting for the penny to drop, because we don’t know what will happen to him.” A chance meeting with Cindy Lister, co-founder of the ALS Cycle of Hope, piqued the couple’s interest in the annual ride, which winds more than 550 kilometres from Kamloops to Keremeos from Aug. 5 to 12 and raises money for research, awareness and support for families living through the fatal disease. After going to an information meeting in February, Daphne, who works at Royal Roads University, and Kevin found themselves unable to stand idly by as Wiens’ muscles slowly eroded from the incurable disease. They both signed up. “I think (my father) is pretty proud of me; I think he is surprised to see me doing as

well as (I am),” Daphne said. “He would love to ride it, too.” Wiens, however, will never ride a bike again. Even swallowing food and verbal communication are major challenges after 18 years with the disease. With that in mind, Kevin said the time was now to support their father through his journey on a deeper, more personal basis – and do it as husband and wife. “I couldn’t imagine her doing it alone or myself doing it alone,” he said. “We always have done stuff together, that is just the way our relationship is. This has been incredible on so many different levels. (ALS) is something that really needs to be challenged, needs to be tackled. concern that nearby structures may be at risk, said Assistant Chief Greg Chow. Because of that, View Royal Fire Department responded as per their mutual aid agreement when structures are at risk. Five fire apparatus were on scene and managed to extinguish the fire within 45 minutes, with no damage to any structure. Bonnie Coulter is a maker and a force of nature. Visitors to her cozy studio on the East Sooke waterfront quickly discover she oozes artistic creativity. Her paintings and sculptures are constantly evolving as she explores new ideas, techniques and media, all the while refining earlier inventions to reflect her thoughts. Bonnie did not start out as an artist. She was “the original tomboy” and wanted to go into trades. After being rejected by the Vancouver Vocational Institute of Technology because she didn’t have credits in high school shop (they were mostly denied to girls at the time) she convinced her old school to give her an extra term of shop. This time, VVI accepted her. She was the only girl entering in her year to make it past Christmas and graduated as a designer. She married at 18 and she and husband, Keith, were all set up for the good life in suburban Newton. But they had a yen to farm. So they bought a quarter section near Soda Creek in the Cariboo and ran a mixed farm, with the whole range of crops and animals, including 20 mares for breeding mules. Bonnie and Keith soon learned that most farmers only sustain their lifestyle with off-farm work. So Bonnie designed houses built by Keith; she also secured a variety of design/survey-related government jobs. After their kids left home, however, running the farm and doing outside work became increasingly onerous. The need to provide health care for a family member dictated a move to south Vancouver Island in 2001. Keith continued to build houses, including

Except when the fish are running, she spends four to five hours daily in her studio, making art for show or for the four or five commissions always underway. Bonnie has always enjoyed art, but the move to East Sooke opened new doors. Most important was the encouragement and advice from her daughter Angela (Menzies), an established painter and a long-time member of the Stinking Fish Studio Tour, to explore new techniques and subject matter. The appeal of Bonnie’s work is demonstrated by public comments – and purchases. It’s hard to define that appeal in words. A major factor is the play between unlikely materials and the ostensible subject matter. This is clearest in the case of her sculptural assemblies of mechanical parts and tools, many boatrelated. People delight in the unexpected emergence of animals from hard manufactured objects, especially when those animals exhibit “attitude.”

Several of her painting techniques involve seeming conflicts between materials and subjects. Sometimes the attraction emerges from deeper emotions and personal memories. Other works communicate a deeprooted love of nature and the need to nurture it. One thing is clear: in Bonnie’s words, “It’s not about pretty.” She continues to explore new ideas, most recently photo realism, partly in connection with a multi-year project to document the construction of a classic wooden ship. Be fire smart to stay fire safe Despite the recent cooling pattern, the dearth of summer rain and unseasonably high temperatures have conspired to create the perfect storm, not only for forest fires, but the scary possibility of a devastating interface fire. A recent fire near Nanaimo airport should sound alarm bells and reinforce the importance of taking every possible precaution, whether you’re in the woods or walking down the street. Here on the West Shore, urban growth sprawls right up against forests in many areas, increasing the risk posed by the current powder-keg dry conditions. A complete ban on burning and campfires for B.C. the first week of July came unusually early, and underlines the need to be extra vigilant when camping or hiking in the natural beauty that is an integral part of our Vancouver Island lifestyle. All it takes is one careless camper or smoker to cause catastrophic damage. Smokers especially need to be diligent. Refrain from the stupidity of discarding butts out of your vehicle and bring along a bottle of water to fully extinguish cigarettes when out for a stroll. Trails, sidewalks and plantings around buildings, frequently surrounded by wood chips or patches of grass, are especially at risk. Even a small fragment of glass, a clear bottle or glass, or a piece of shiny metal can be enough to magnify the sun and spark a fire. Parents, take a couple of minutes to remind your curious kids that it’s never a good idea to play with matches or lighters, no matter how tempting. Local incidents so far have been restricted to relatively small grass fires, fortunately dealt with before they had a chance to spread. While that may indicate the public is plugging into the heightened risks, the fact three halls in Langford now respond to grass fire calls normally dealt with by one underscores the heightened state of danger. A sudden gust of wind or an extra few minutes lost in response time is all it takes for a little fire to graduate to a full-blown blaze. Habitat opens satellite ReStore Habitat for Humanity does a terrific business from its ReStore facility on Orono Avenue in Langford, with roughly 85 per cent of its customers coming from the West Shore. But a large portion of donations to ReStore come from Saanich, Oak Bay and Victoria residents, said associate manager Mike Fimrite, who is overseeing setup of Habitat’s new ReStore branch in Saanich. “Those same people who donate weren’t making the trip to shop at our (Langford) store,” Fimrite said. Known as ReStore Victoria, the new store will offer the same merchandise and prices as the Langford branch. The new store, at 3311H Oak St. near Uptown, is expected to open in early August. Cyclists helped out with bike shelters at transit exchange Colwood installs covered lockups for commuters, repair station for all cyclists Rick Stiebel News Gazette staff

It’s great news for cyclists who take transit in Colwood. The City of Colwood has installed three bike shelters and a repair station at the Juan de Fuca transit exchange, next to West Shore Parks and Recreation on the Old Island Highway. The new shelters can accommodate 36 bicycles in three separate shelters in a safe, and well-lit location, a marked improvement for cyclists who in the past could only access four bicycle lockers which were not administered by the city. The repair station will enable cyclists to do quick maintenance, such as filling or changing tires, or adjusting brakes and derailleurs. It’s a welcome convenience for cyclists who use the Galloping Goose Trail, the Velodrome and the BMX track, all of which are located nearby. Cost for the improvements is about $50,000. Funding was made available through a joint Capital Regional District and Union of British Columbia Municipalities Pedestrian and Cycling Master Plan grant under the Federal Gas Tax Agreement. news@goldstreamgazette.com

Shamrocks juniors in a tough spot The Victoria Shamrocks find themselves in a must-win situation heading into game 3 of their best-of-five B.C. Junior A Lacrosse Association semifinal series this Saturday. The Rocks lost a 7-6 decision to Delta on Sunday in Ladner, one night after the Islanders shocked the hometown Shamrocks with a 14-6 win on the floor at The Q Centre. This Saturday’s game goes at 5 p.m. at the Panorama Recreation Centre in North Saanich, with the Shamrocks’ home arena closed during Rock the Shores. Victoria led Sunday’s contest 4-2 after one period but trailed 6-5 after two and was unable to find the net more than

once in the third period. Cole Pickup and Jake Cullen had two goals and an assist each to lead the Shamrocks’ attack in game 2, with singles scored by McLean Chicquen and Ryan Lewis. Victoria goalie Charles Claxton was kept busy on the night and made some big saves, as the Islanders outshot their opponent 54-41. Saturday’s game began well enough, with Delta building a slim 5-4 lead after 20 minutes. But it was all Islanders after that, as they made it 11-5 after two periods and kept up the pressure in the third. Pickup had two goals and a helper and Cullen and Max Fredrickson had one and one to lead the Shamrocks.

The pee wee A Juan de Fuca Whalers finished off their box lacrosse season with a win Sunday in Pitt Meadows, defeating Delta 11-9 in the provincial championships bronze medal game.

The Whalers were part of a trio of teams given a shot at winning it all entering the tournament. Those teams – the others were Ridge Meadows and Coquitlam – were closely matched as evidenced by the scores in their head-to-head games. Each of the winners in those contests won by three goals or less. Juan de Fuca dropped a 9-8 decision in overtime to eventual champion Ridge Meadows in the tournament opener for

both teams last week, then rebounded to beat Kamloops 10-4 and Delta 4-1 on Thursday. Friday saw the Whalers hammer Langley 11-2, then defeat Coquitlam 7-5 in their final round robin game to go 4-1, setting the stage for Saturday night’s semifinal. The mainland squad won the rematch 5-4 to advance to the championship game against Ridge Meadows, who won gold with a 7-4 decision.

Royal Colwood member Keaton Gudz finished in a tie for 19th spot at 2-over par 290 at the B.C. Golf Association junior boys championship at the Osoyoos Golf Club. Gudz, who topped West Shore golfers playing the event, closed with a 4-over round of 76 on Friday. He opened with a 73, then posted a pair of sub-par rounds of 71 and 70 to sit tied for 13th after three rounds. Highland Pacific member Kyle Leiman finished one stroke back of Gudz in a three-way tie for 22nd at 291, having shot 74-70-74-73. A pair of Juan de Fuca Whalers lacrosse novice division teams made it to the finals at the Jack Crosby Memorial tournament in Burnaby on July 5. Short-lived start for Reaume

Former Highlands resident Josh Reaume had a tough day at the NASCAR XFinity Series’ Kentucky 300 on Friday, finishing 37th after suspension problems forced him out after just 10 laps. Reaume, who began the season as the No. 1 driver for the Obaika Racing team but was dropped earlier this year, sits tied for 35th overall in the driver’s standings, having raced for independent teams the past few races. Rescuing cats from trees really does happen in Langford Firefighters in small communities engage in many duties outside what they’re trained for, and Langford is no different. Every year, for example, Langford

Fire Rescue receives numerous requests from the community regarding animal rescues. One of the most challenging for the fire department is the “cat in a tree” call.

Often in such circumstances, says Chief Bob Beckett, the fire department is not in a position to help due to the location of the tree, its height and inaccessibility, not

to mention firefighter training does not include climbing trees. An option many pet owners might not be aware of, Beckett says, is to place a white sheet or towel

on the ground, then put a bowl of food and water in the middle so the cat’s focus is on the food. Once hungry enough, the hope is that the cat will make its own way down.

Recently, dispatchers took several calls from residents in a Langford neighbourhood about a cat that had been up a tree for at least three days. After a firefighter met with a resident on site and confirmed the department could not undertake the rescue directly, the idea was floated to contact an arborist to see if they could help. As it turned out, Mark Logtenburg, manager of Davey Tree Service volunteered to take on the job.

“Mark said that if the animal is up in a tree more than three days, they don’t mind helping out if they are available,” Beckett said, thanking the arborist for his volunteer work. With the cat brought down safely, the chief and his crew now know they have another weapon in their arsenal to deal with the variety of calls they get over the course of the year. editor@goldstream gazette.com
