NORTH ISLAND WILDLIFE RECOVERY CENTRE
Famous bear cubs in town Port Hardy cubs at centre of controversy are healthy, pudgy CARLI BERRY news@pqbnews.com
The black bear cubs saved by a conservation officer — causing country wide controversy — are alive and well at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre in Errington. Jordan and Athena are approximately five months old and Julie Mackey, NIWRA assistant wildlife manager said “They’re like every other set of orphan bear cubs.” The bear cubs will stay at the center for a year and will be released next fall, Mackey said. They keep the cubs for a year, covering the time they would hibernate with their mother in nature, Mackey said. “It just gets their social behavior and that type of thing going.” See CUBS NOT SHOWING, page A4
ALDERMUIR PROMISES TO CONTINUE
Cohousing rejected AUREN RUVINSKY
writer@pqbnews.com
The Aldermuir cohousing project in Qualicum Beach is dead again, for the moment. “The Aldermuir group will continue, more than ever,” said Gary Morrison, president and founder of the Vancouver based Livewell Cohousing after a Qualicum Beach committee of the whole meeting Thursday in which council recommended rejecting their development proposal. “But at this moment we’ll all take the weekend off, enjoy the sunshine and think about options and next steps,” he said. After concerns about setbacks from a protected wetland at the previous council meeting, proponents reduced the proposal from 61 to 52 units and increased the setbacks on the 20-acre property at the corner of Laburnum and Claymore roads. Coun. Anne Skipsey said the proposal goes against the town’s OCP and council’s commitment to the environment. Council voted 4-1, refusing to forward the rezoning application onto the next regular council meeting. Watch The NEWS for more on the ongoing story.

STARTING POINT
Dogs in cars can overheat in minutes
Dogs are still being left in hot cars says Lorie Chortyk, general manager of communications for the B.C. SPCA. The SPCA doesn’t have the authority to break into a car, so if you find a dog in a hot car call the RCMP, Parksville-Qualicum SPCA manager Nadine Durante said. Chortyk said a car can become “almost like a microwave” and can take as little as 15 minutes for the dog to overheat. “Dogs don’t release heat the same way humans do,” she said. It can take as little as 10 minutes for a car to reach 37ºC. A dog’s organs start to cook at 41ºC. Even in the shade with the windows rolled down, you still can’t leave a dog in a vehicle, Chortyk said. “We urge people to leave their pets at home.” To report an animal in distress in a vehicle, call the SPCA hotline at 1-855-622-7722 or the RCMP. — Carli Berry
Motorcycle fatality identified
The B.C. Coroners Service confirmed the identity of a man who died following a motorcycle incident in Chemainus on June 30, 2015 as that of Colin Thomas Campbell, aged 61, of Parksville. According to a news release, Campbell was the operator of a motorcycle southbound on the Trans-Canada Highway at about 2 p.m. when he collided with a vehicle that had stopped on the travel portion of the roadway at the intersection with Oyster-Sto’Lo Road. Campbell was flown to Vancouver General Hospital but succumbed to his injuries on July 4. Authorities are still investigating. — submitted by the B.C. Coroners Service

RCMP ACT ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION
Dynamite’s age was unknown CARLI BERRY news@pqbnews.com
The dynamite that was found in the Qualicum Bay area last Tuesday was too old to have proper expiration labels, Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman said. Foreman said the dynamite labels “predated” the mandate used now to determine how old a dynamite stick is. The dynamite was found in a freezer in the back yard of a man’s property, Foreman said. He wasn’t sure how the man came into possession of the dynamite but no charges will be laid as “he was trying to do the right thing.” Former Parksville Mayor Chris Burger who owns the Meadowood Store across from the Dashwood Firehall where the dynamite was destroyed, said “People were coming into the store and asking questions.”
He said he was notified beforehand about the explosions but there were a lot of people in the area that didn’t know what was going on. There were “big bangs, and you could feel the pressure wave,” Burger said. “Treating that kind of material… you don’t want to attract a lot of people,” he said. Foreman said people were not notified because the RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit had another situation in Comox and couldn’t wait until morning to properly notify the public. “It wasn’t an optimum situation,” Foreman said. He didn’t know the specific amount of dynamite found, but said it was a “significant amount.” The dynamite was destroyed on July 7 at the Dashwood Fire Department gravel pit in five blasts.

PARKSVILLE ACCIDENT: An accident on July 8 involving a vehicle and a motorcycle left at least one person injured on the 19A highway past the orange bridge.
BEARS WILL BE KEPT FOR A YEAR
Cubs not showing any human food habituation CONTINUED FROM PAGE A1
The bear cubs were brought to the centre after conservation officer, Bryce Casavant refused to euthanize them after killing their mother in Port Hardy after she repeatedly broke into a meat freezer in a mobile home. He was suspended from duty. A change.org petition to reinstate the officer had 153,595 signatures as of July 11. So far the bear cubs have been skittish of the other bear cubs, but Mackey said give it a week. The cubs will play together when younger and hibernate together which is good because the cubs will get used to others of their species, she said. Mackey said if the cubs were older and habituated they would have likely been destroyed but in this instance the bear cubs did not learn bad habits from their mother. “The conservation officer and home owner both contacted us and said the cubs never did enter the home, it was just the mother,” Mackey said. “They’re not showing any food habituation… they’re scared of us as much as any cub should be scared of us.” Mackey said technically

the cubs still could be euthanized, but it seems highly unlikely. “I really don’t think at this point that they’d make that move.”

MARKET DEBATE CONTINUES
LOCAL WILDFIRE FEARS
AUREN RUVINSKY
writer@pqbnews.com

A wildfire in Coombs stirred a lot of fear and a large reaction from emergency services, but was quickly contained Friday evening. “Around 5 p.m. at the (Coombs Country Campground) lake we started to smell smoke and there was a small amount of ash in the air,” said Leon Davis from Nanaimo who was there camping with his family. “At 5:30 we headed to our campsite and started to hear multiple fire trucks passing the campground. At about 6 p.m. a firetruck pulled into the campsite and drove down to the lake.” He said they were told to be prepared to leave in 20 minutes so they started packing up as a helicopter started flying over the area. About 20 minutes later staff told them just to leave everything and evacuate. “Having a toddler with us we decided we would just return home as we had fully packed,” he said, though the order was soon lifted. “The fire covered about 1,200 feet by 75 feet along the tracks,” said Aaron Poirier, Chief of the Coombs-Hilliers Fire Department, lead agency for the response. “There were 20 of my members along with members from Bow Horne Bay, Dashwood, Qualicum Beach,

After much debate and confusion Qualicum Beach town council is looking for more input on a proposed Wednesday evening farmers’ market. After a committee of the whole discussion Thursday about what could be sold at the market and who would be impacted, council scheduled a public forum before last night’s (July 13) regular meeting. Market organizers have been struggling with details that would allow them to expand from their usual Saturday morning market on Veterans Way. They originally proposed a mid-week “top up” market in the same place but said fresh, local-only food restrictions imposed by council to not interfere with the Thursday evening street market, were too restrictive so they moved to school district property. The intention was to avoid requiring town permission but it turned out the market’s business licence is only good for the Veterans Way location, meaning they still need council permission. Coun. Neil Horner, who made the restrictive motion, clarified Thursday he’d just meant locally grown food, not necessarily to restrict farmers from selling locally processed foods and asked farmers’ market president Lorne Callum to bring back a list of foods their vendors would like to sell. Council passed a motion to hold the public forum last night (after press time) and invited stakeholder groups like the chamber and downtown business association. Read Thursday’s paper for meeting coverage.

Parksville, Nanoose, Errington and a Ministry of Forests helicopter,” he said. Highway 4A was closed for most of the evening to give crews space to work. The cause is still unknown, but Poirier points out that despite the rain, conditions are still “extreme-
ly dangerous” and “people need to pay attention to their actions and the long-term consequences.” He said in his 23 years with the department he’s never seen conditions like this and thanked the great response from neighbouring departments.

Comprehensive Watering Ban in Parksville On July 9, the City and the Regional District of Nanaimo moved to a Comprehensive Watering Ban (Level 4 Water Conservation). This ban is necessary due to extremely low water levels caused by record-breaking dry weather conditions and no snowpack. Vancouver Island is ranked as “extremely dry” drought conditions by the province and with hotter temperatures and almost no precipitation in the forecast, there will be continued, unprecedented pressure on our water resources. We are experiencing a reduction in emergency water storage levels which could severely impact our ability to fight a large fire or, after using water resources to fight fire, impact our ability to meet water requirements for residents and businesses. Level 4 – Comprehensive Watering Ban includes: • All outdoor sprinkling is prohibited including newly seeded and sodded lawns. • Between the hours of 6 am to 10 am and 6 pm to 10 pm, watering of vegetable gardens, shrubs, trees and flowers is restricted to a hand-held container or a hose equipped with
ERWS Funding Announcement On June 29, the governments of Canada and BC announced funding of $6 million for the Englishman River Water Service water infrastructure project for the City and the Regional District of Nanaimo. Funded through the New Building Canada Plan’s Small Communities Fund, a total of $42 million was allocated to British Columbia. The estimated cost of the project is $24.3 million which includes a regional water intake, treatment plant, transmission supply mains and aquifer storage and recovery. Next steps include a meeting of the ERWS management board, a determination of final costs, preparation of final drawings and a fall referendum for borrowing.
Foster Park Playground Closed for Upgrades
a shut-off nozzle or a drip-irrigation system. (This does not include soaker, weeper hoses or micro-sprayers – drip irrigation only.) • No washing of vehicles, RVs and boats. • No washing of driveways, sidewalks, parking lots and exterior building surfaces. • No filling of swimming pools, wading pools, hot tubs and garden pond water features. These restrictions are intended to ensure the community receives an adequate supply of water through the summer and also ensure sufficient reserves are available for emergency firefighting purposes. Additional water demands resulting from outdoor water use are the primary stressor on supply, which is why outdoor use is the target of this comprehensive ban. With Level 4 restrictions, the City has stopped watering many irrigated areas; however, major assets such as sports fields and significant trees will be preserved using the City’s advanced and efficient irrigation system. Significant changes to parks operations will be made to reduce water required for irrigation while balancing the needs for recreational users, tourism and to maintain public safety. In the near future, consideration will be given to the possibility of a smoking ban in parks, the closure of some trails and other measures as may be necessary. The City’s website [Quicklinks/Reports/Water Conservation] includes resource links, frequently asked questions, water conservation tips and other information.

Council Liaison Volunteer – Oceanside Health and Wellness Network
The City is proud to be one of the community sponsors of the Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition. Parksville Beach Festival runs from July 10 to August 16 and as well as the world famous sand sculpting event, activities include Lions Kitefest (July 18-19), Art in the Park (July 18-19), VanIsle Shriners Show and Shine Car Show (August 2), Quality Foods Festival of Lights Fireworks (August 15), Quality Foods Children’s Sandcastle Competition and Parksville Kidfest (August 16), Friday and Saturday night concerts in the picnic shelter between July 18 and August 15 as well as buskers in the Community Park gazebo most afternoons. More info at parksvillebeachfest.ca
The City invites applications for a volunteer to serve as Council liaison to the Oceanside Health and Wellness Network. OHWN is committed to enhancing the health and well-being of Oceanside residents through collaborative planning and collective action. The liaison would attend OHWN meetings and update Council on the issues discussed. At this time, meetings are held on the first Monday of the month from 3 to 5 pm. If you are interested in serving as Council liaison for a three-year term, please apply in writing including a brief resume by July 31 to the Director of Administrative Services.
We are indeed fortunate to have such a variety of summer markets in Parksville – the Tuesday evening Summer by the Sea Street Market on Craig Street; the Parksville Farmers Market on Fridays and the Artisans Market on Sundays hosted by the Parksville Museum and Archives and the Saturday morning Orange Bridge Market. As well there are weekly markets in Errington and Qualicum Beach. Information on events in Parksville Qualicum Beach may be found at visitparksvillequalicumbeach.com.
The Foster Park playground will be closed to the public until early September. During excavation, one of the pieces of equipment which we planned to retain was found to be unsafe. The timeframe to order new equipment has delayed the resurfacing which will facilitate a new softer surface and the installation of new equipment as well as changes to the size and shape of the play area. While the playground is closed, Foster Park, the gazebo and trails are still available for residents.

Kill the cubs?
I
f it was your job to shoot two adorable-looking bear cubs, could you do it? Should it be anyone’s job to shoot bear cubs? And once they are given names, is it even remotely possible they could be coldly shot to death? Jordan and Athena are five months old. They are currently under the expert care of the talented and loving staff at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre in Errington. They are worldwide media stars, thanks to the compassionate act of a conservation officer. Winnie and Yogi, step aside. As with most stories, there are more than two sides. We’d like to hear, through letters to the editor or comments on our website, your view of the situation. First, a little background. A B.C. conservation officer was suspended without pay for failing to euthanize these cubs in Port Hardy. Their mother had been killed after repeatedly breaking into a freezer containing meat and salmon. The bears came looking for their mom and that’s when Bryce Casavant refused the order he was given to shoot and kill the cubs. Instead, he brought them to the North Island Wildlife Recovery Association’s (NIWRA) facility in Errington. NIWRA’s Robin Campbell has called Casavant a hero. The CO also received praise from many people around the province and country. “The conservation officer did the right thing,” Gail Martin, the founder of Critter Care, told our sister paper, The Langley Times. “Finally someone stood up to the government and said no to what they knew wasn’t right.” NIWRA officials tell us they plan to release the cubs into the wild in about a year. Hundreds of “problem” bears are destroyed by conservation officers every year. Many of these bears have gotten a taste for human garbage and, after attempts to relocate them, return to neighbourhoods where kids walk to school. What about Jordan and Athena? They have lost their mother. They watched her look for food near humans. Well if anyone can keep these bears healthy and ready for release into the wild, it’s the NIWRA. Should the CO keep his job? He declined to do something he was asked to do by a superior. He didn’t follow orders, essentially. Surely it’s OK not to follow an order one believes is immoral, is it not? Or perhaps you believe he should look for another line of work. We don’t have any answers here — we want to hear what our valued readers have to offer. — Editorial by John Harding

WE NEED MORE ‘PROTECT AND SERVE’ On June 29, an intoxicated man appeared in the outside entranceway of a residential health care facility in Qualicum Beach. He was pleasant and polite but said he had been drinking for four days and was not “doing well” and would someone call the police for him. He said he just wanted to go to the “drunk tank” and sleep it off. A staff member at Eagle Park gave him some water and the police were called. When they arrived they spoke to him for awhile and sent him on his way. The RCMP officer said the man “only wanted a ride home” and they had told him they were “not a taxi service.” What exactly does “To Protect and Serve” mean? What would it have taken to have driven this man home? Qualicum Beach is a small town — how long would it have taken? Fifteen minutes? In that short period of time, perhaps they could have talked to him, maybe found out whether he even had a home. Perhaps find out if they could direct him to some available social services. Maybe just in speaking to him, on the ride home, find out that he actually was in need of some medical treatment. What ever happened to small-town policing and just general compassion and concern for your fellow man? I realize his condition was self-induced and we, as a society, do not have much tolerance for that, but he requested help, help arrived and help was denied. That is not good enough. As taxpayers we contribute a considerable amount every year for our RCMP and we deserve to get more from them than speeding tickets and seat belt checks. Wouldn’t it be nice to have our police members walking or biking the streets of Parksville and Qualicum Beach (and other small towns), talking to people, directing tourists, assisting our elderly, instead of driving around in the many police vehicles parked at the RCMP station on Pym Street? Wouldn’t it be nice if they actually interacted with the public in a positive way? How many examples of our police force dealing poorly with mental illness and substance abuse issues will it take for them to start changing their attitudes and acquire better people skills? I realize they probably get a little tired, if

RUDE CANADA DAY BEHAVIOUR
This letter is directed to the man in the light blue shirt sitting in a chair on the boulevard in front of the Shopper’s Drug Mart store at the Canada Day parade in Parksville. You were obnoxious and very rude to the Citizen’s on Patrol volunteers. They were doing their volunteer job. Those who cheered for you were not nice either. These people volunteer their time. This wonderful community would not be what is without the many people who volunteer. You and the group who stayed on the boulevard even though you were all asked to move, thus you prevented the folks on the sidewalk (who had come early enough to get a front row seat) from seeing most of the parade. SHEILA DALE Parksville
FRENCH CREEK NEEDS A CELL TOWER
We strongly agree with the two letters you published in the July 7 edition regarding the cell phone tower proposed for French Creek, letters by Lionel Daneault and George Olmstead. How ridiculous that the objections of two people with such vague worries, can reverse the plan to build the communication tower we need. We have also sent this to RDN French Creek rep Joe Stanhope, hoping this matter will be reconsidered. SHELLEY AND JON JOHNSON French Creek
BACKYARD TOWER Re: the two recent letters to the editor about a new cell phone tower in French Creek. The first writer was worried about possible health concerns with the frequencies used and didn’t want the cell tower near his house. The second writer has no concern
about those cell phone frequencies and wants better cell phone coverage in the area. There is a simple solution, with the second writer having no concerns with the frequencies emitted and he wants better cell phone coverage: put the tower in his backyard. TIM MANTHORPE Parksville
PESTICIDE BANS I asked the gardener for our complex, who was spraying weeds wearing a mask, what he was using. He replied: “Roundup.” I was amazed as I thought that this product had been banned from use in this area. I was informed that though Qualicum Beach has a ban on the use of this pesticide, Parksville does not. Why are they still using this harmful pesticide? I think many people could be unaware of this practice in Parksville. Would the mayor or city councillors care to comment on this? I fear for humans, birds and animals, as we all share this planet.

REPORT LIT CIGARETTE TOSSERS
In the past week, I have twice been behind a car/truck where the driver threw his cigarette butt out the window and onto the road. Twice. In this tinder dry environment. The second time, I made a note of his licence plate so if I heard of a fire happening in that vicinity later in the day, I planned to submit his license plate to the authorities. I urge everyone who sees anyone throw his cigarette butt out the window to take down the licence plate and report it to the authorities if there is a fire in that vicinity later. Then, I think the perpetrator should be charged for full cost of battling that fire and for any loss of homes, lives or livestock. What are these people thinking? And, just in case you think this is an attack on smokers, it’s not. I’m a smoker, too. However, I use my ashtray in my car to put out my cigarettes. And if your car doesn’t have an ashtray, you can easily purchase a portable ashtray to put in your vehicle. PETRA TSCHAUNER Nanoose Bay See LETTERS, page A13

The unholy potato wasn’t even mentioned in the Bible!
Q
uiz time, kiddies. Name me the superstar that lives underground, has orbited the earth in a space capsule, adorned the hair of Marie Antoinette and made Bob Dylan cry. Times up. It’s the potato. It grows underground and became the first vegetable to be grown extra-terrestrially. (Space Shuttle Challenger, 1995). To bewitch her suitors, Marie Antoinette liked to wear potato blossoms behind her ears. And Bob Dylan, a prolific urban gardener (who knew?) broke down in tears when his New York balcony potato plants succumbed to blight. The point is: the humble potato is a heavy hitter. It’s called the Irish Potato, but that’s a misnomer. South Americans were cultivating, harvesting and chomping down on an early variety of Solanum Tuberosum for millennia before any potatoes made their way to Ireland. European culture flourished just as surely as the potato plants that fed the populace. What a wonderful, lifegiving nugget, the simple potato is — and utterly undeserving of its reputation of being a fattening food. Potatoes are an amazingly rich source of nourishment. One potato delivers 40 percent of your daily Vitamin C requirement — and more potassium than bananas, spinach or broccoli. And potatoes are NOT fattening — it’s the added butter, oil and sour cream that puts on the pounds. Boiled potatoes good; French fries, not so much. NOW PLAYING AT VILLAGE THEATRE
Abundance of Alices keep audience enthralled REVIEW: musical comedy ensemble has audience laughing and crying and earns its mature rating CARLI BERRY news@pqbnews.com
A… My Name Will Always Be Alice is full of amusement, affection and analogies that have the audience chuckling one minute and tearing up the next. The play starts with alliteration as the five-woman cast each introduce themselves as Alice and these Alice’s are in an all-girl band that sings the entire play. Directed by Eileen Butts, this lively comedy twists and turns as the cast sings 24 songs with 24 different stories delving into the lives of women of all ages. The five women impress with their quick changes through the night, both of scene and topic. Opening night was on July 7 at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach as part of the Bard to Broadway Theatre Society season running until mid-August. The actors: Marilyn Holt, Jennifer Kelly, Sarah McKelvey, Rosalee Sullivan and Belle Warner sing a jumble of songs and sketches that have some characters overlapping in different scenes and others that make a few appearances throughout the evening. Sullivan outdid herself with her “For Women Only” soliloquies that had the audience hooting and hollering louder
CARLI BERRY PHOTO
From left to right, Jennifer Kelly, Sarah McKelvey, Belle Warner, Rosalee Sullivan and Marilyn Holt raise their hands in celebration for the end of opening night for A… My Name Is Alice at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach. The cast received a standing ovation for their performance on July 7.
with each poem. She read three scenes from her book of poetry throughout the evening, each more ridiculous than the last. She compared herself to a caged parrot, “Pretty Polly,” a withering house plant and a broken swan before exclaiming at the end of her poems “He did it!” and hobbling off stage. Sullivan’s limping and outlandish outfit’s even
had the men cracking up. Not for the light-hearted A… My Name Will Always Be Alice gets a mature rating for a reason. Another audience favourite, “Gross Anatomy,” had Holt addressing the audience as a doctor to a class of young, female doctors and said that men are often hit with the case of “small cox” which has a bizarre effect
on a man’s behaviour. Holt said even though they (men) think size doesn’t matter, “we all know that’s a crock of sh**” Sex is discussed openly and metaphorically in Alice as McKelvey turns psychologist in another scene and Holt becomes a disturbed woman named Honeypot who can only sing about sex in metaphors about hardware and food.
In-between the comedy, Alice also discusses deeper issues that women face in their dayto-day lives. In one scene Sullivan speaks about her “lovely little life” and how empty she felt even with children and a husband. The scene “Life-lines” discusses the issue with women and self-image. It starts in a barber shop as three women compare themselves to women in magazines. When Holt interrupts the conversation, and encourages the young women to love themselves and their wrinkles, the young women (McKelvey, Warner and Kelly) learn that the lines on their faces tell the story of their lives. “Every crease is a masterpiece,” Holt sang. Another scene has Warner as a male construction worker, and flips the tables on the objectification of women as McKelvey gives Warner an earful after receiving rude comments about her breasts. A… My Name Is Alice received a well deserved standing ovation on opening night from the near-full audience. Tickets are $11 for children, $20 for seniors and $22 for adults and the play will run until Aug. 15. To see the full schedule go to www.b2btheatre.com.

Sunset Cinema returns to Parksville Community Park Wednesday night. Everyone is invited to bring a blanket or lawn chair to a movie in the great outdoors. Now in its fifth year, the free event is a fun way to watch a movie and help support Coast Community Credit Union’s
Young Entrepreneur Program. Concession proceeds go towards the educational program designed to help students explore business. This year the animated buddy comedy Home is showing on the big screen, based on Adam Rex’s 2007 children’s book The True Meaning of Smekday starring Jim
Parsons, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez and Steve Martin. When Oh, a loveable misfit from another planet, lands on Earth and finds himself on the run from his own people, he forms an unlikely friendship with an adventurous girl named Tip who is on a quest of her own.
Through a series of comic adventures Oh comes to understand that being different and making mistakes is part of being human. And while he changes her planet and she changes his world, they discover the true meaning of the word ‘home.’ The movie starts around 9 p.m. rain or shine. Print Media Sponsor

He said they have invited Dave Kasprick from Red Cod Forge to demonstrate the art of blacksmithing and are constructing a building for him to work out of. “We also have a woodworker who is going to do classic woodworking in the woodwork shop. We are looking at a cartwheel worker. We have two lathes, one for spokes and one for wheels.” He said eventually he would like to see a log house constructed on the property but that is way down the line. “This is where the museum needs to be… we are a community.” Plans are also underway

to create a mural of the history of the museum. Painter Michael Schutte who opened the Academy of Fine Art in the Tryon Room at the museum in May has offered to paint a cougar on a giant rock. The cougar represents the first settlers in the area. In fact one of their buildings was built by pioneer James Craig in the thirties and houses memorabilia of Craig’s prowess as a cougar hunter, including a mounted cougar and other family artifacts. Schutte said he and his wife Els, who creates paper art, are thrilled to be teaching and creating at the museum and he is looking forward to helping develop the attraction so it will continue to thrive and prosper. “For the museum I donated paintings and prints
which they can sell for their benefit. This summer I will start working on a mural about the history of Craig Bay, including a giant cougar,” he said. Both artists will be doing demonstrations during the artisan markets and in the fall will resume their art workshops including a special course in cartoons and animation for youth. Michael teaches the techniques of the Dutch old masters while Els does workshops in paper crafts. She has even made special diorama cards with scenes of the museum. The museum is located at the south end of Parksville at the junction of Highway 19A and Franklin Gull Rd. adjacent to the Tourist Information Centre. The market runs Sundays 1-5 p.m. until August 30.

All sorts of interesting things are happening at the Parksville Museum and Archives located in Craig Heritage Park. New for this year is the artisans market which runs on Sundays in July and August. David Haynes Vice President of the Parksville Museum and Archives Society said the first one took place July 5 and while they had a few glitches at their inaugural market, he is confident it will become as popular as their Friday night farmers’ market. “We had 375 people through the gates. I guess I am spoiled because the average attendance is 750 for our Friday night farmers’ market,” he said. He said he knows there will be some growing pains but once people find out about it, he expects it will be hugely popular. “We have some world caliber artists at our market,” he said and they are trying to offer a wide array of artisans who work in all kinds of media. Along with about 23 vendors in place for the season, they will have musicians and other entertainers. Haynes said they are working hard to make the museum a focal point in Parksville. “We want the museum to be a destination for learning and for interesting things. For too long it has languished in just being a building that you drive by. We want it to be a place you drive to,” he said. He said they have other

HeBrews: social enterprise coffee in QB New coffee shop with three managers intends to pour profits back into community and social organizations CARLI BERRY news@pqbnews.com
The name HeBrews is not only punny, it carries meaning, Castley Collery, one of the managers at HeBrews, said. The owner, Brian Weightman, attends St. Stephen’s United Church in Qualicum Beach and got the name from the book of the Bible, along with brews — as in ‘he brews coffee’ — Collery said. As HeBrews is run by all women, Collery said “Shouldn’t it be SheBrews?” Collery said from time to time they also get customers in the store asking for Kosher salt. The coffee shop opened on April 15 and has been run by three co-managers since. “Having no experience in the coffee world, he (Weightman) took a leap of faith,” Collery said. She said Weightman is currently in Saskatchewan and has left three managers to run the shop in his absence. “He left us on April 17 to leave us run it while he goes and farms for the summer,” Collery said. She recommends HeBrews’ baked goods, as she makes some of the breads herself. “All of our baking is done inhouse,” Collery said. “When we opened a little over two months ago we had coffee and muffins,” Collery said. She said HeBrews now offers soups, sandwiches, cakes and a variety of drinks. The point of HeBrews is to have a coffee shop for the community, Collery said. HeBrews has a pay-it-forward system, where an individual can purchase a cup of

coffee for a complete stranger. “We had so many people doing it,” Collery said that they decided to set up a system. Once HeBrews gets going, Collery said any extra revenue is going to be donated back into the local community and national organizations. “We are a non-profit social enterprise,” Collery said. “Any surplus that we have goes into a fund.” “Instead of going into our pockets or Brian’s profits, we’re hoping it will go back into the community,” Collery said. The Facts
Immunizations are among the most important and effective ways to prevent travel-related infections. Immunizations for travel include: • Routine childhood or adult immunizations that you would receive in Canada. • Those that are required to cross certain international borders (e.g., yellow fever). • Recommended immunizations according to risk of infection for particular areas.

Whether we like it or not, technology is moving foreword rapidly and the latest computer chips are doing things unheard of even 5 years ago. Such as: Channel free technology analyses and amplifies speech signals at a speed of 20000 times per second giving a distinctly clear and natural sound quality. An intelligent volume control, different from a traditional volume control amplifies the speech important frequencies and does not give the same weight to the background noise. Directional microphones help eliminate speech coming from behind you helping to reduce the background noise. Adaptive noise reduction reduces steady state noise such as traffic, vacuums etc. to maximize your listening comfort. Transient noise reduction suppresses noises of short duration such as doors slamming dishes rattling etc. Adaptive feedback cancellation eliminates annoying whistling sounds coming from the hearing aid itself before you can hear them. Comfort in airplanes is a brand new feature which when selected reduces the discomfort of wearing hearing aids in an airplane. Sometimes all this technology is not what you want or need. You may just want to hear better in a few specific situations. A skillful professional needs accurate test results to figure out what you want and marry it to what you need, trying all the while to keep the costs as low as possible. At our hearing clinics we take a slow measured approach to your hearing problem, considering all your options with no pressure to make a quick and rushed decision.
REMEMBER TO SHOP LOCALLY, WE WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU!

A good mattress is a very important tool to receive a needed restful sleep. We spend a third of our life in bed. Would you like to spend a third of your life on a toxic mattress? Off-gassing is a large component in memory foam mattress’s emitting a total of 61 Volatile Organic Compounds, off-gassing chemicals. Here are just a few: (1) Benzene one of the chemicals in a memory foam (2) Benzene 123 trimethyl: - is a colorless liquid. • Flammable with strong odor. • Occurs in coal tar and petroleum. • Its a major gasoline additive. • An additive in cigarettes. (3) Chlorobenzene: is a aromatic organic compound that is used to make pesticides. (4) Naphthalene: a product used in mothballs and gives a strong odor. Inhalation to naphthalene is associated with liver damage and in infants possible neurological damage. What is a healthier alternative? Natural Latex for a healthier non toxic sleep is just what the doctor ordered. Natural latex is inherently hypo-allergenic, anti-microbial and dust mite resistant, making it the perfect mattress for allergy sufferers or anyone wanting to breath the fresh clean air while asleep. In addition, natural latex is breathable, keeping you warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. It will provide you with the perfect balance of comfort and support for years to come and most importantly is in a non toxic mattress. Latex conforms dynamically to you, providing superior support and pressure relief. By gently conforming to your every contour, latex provides superior back support and outstanding pressure point relief. Relieving pressure points reduces the tossing and turning that interrupts sleep and brings needed oxygen and nutrients to tired aching muscles.
A HEALTHY, NATURAL SLEEP SYSTEM Sap from the Rubber Tree (Hevea brasiliensis) is collected and processed into latex; the finished product is used in mattresses and pillows.

Product: At TopSeal Services we exclusively use acrylic solvent based sealers. The appeal of our solvent based sealer is a long lasting wet-out shiny coating that not only enhances the appearance of the underlying concrete, but also forms a protective coating that prevents stains, stops the sprouting of weeds, and provides UV protection. This ensures the integrity of your concrete, and keeps your driveway looking brand new. Services: Customer satisfaction is our number one priority. We are an easily accessible, reliable, local company, which goes above and beyond to develop working relationships with our clients. We are willing and able to work around our customers schedules, and always make time to handle client concerns. Once the driveway is deemed complete by the customer, we go the extra mile by providing annual check-ups to ensure the longevity of your concrete investments. Q: Will my landscape, house, or plants, be at risk of damage during this process? A: Absolutely not. During the first steps to sealing, we tailor our pressure washer settings to meet the needs of your driveway specifically, thereby reducing risk of structural damage, and we take extreme precaution with the entirety of your property while we seal, by means of shields, masking, and chemical control. Q: I have a stamped concrete driveway, can it still be sealed? A: Yes it can. We can seal anything from stamped concrete and aggregate, to paving stone, and decorative rocks. Enhancing the curb appeal of your property is one of the bonuses of hiring our company, so if there is a concrete or rock based structure on your property that you want washed or sealed, we will make that happen for you. Don’t hesitate to contact Dave Gilmour with any further questions.

There is a vertical crack in my crawlspace foundation wall, should I be concerned?
Answer:
Transform Your Life with Implants Hundreds of our patients have improved their quality of life by choosing denture over implant solutions. Dental Implants are a good option for most denture wearers and age should not be a deterrent. There are many different implant treatment options available that are affordable and accessible to most people. Dental implants not only provide secure teeth, they provide the opportunity for beautiful aesthetics, full function and confidence. Michelle and Allan will work in co-ordination with your current dental provider or one whom we have great confidence in. Patients are pleasantly surprised by the easy transition into dentures on implants. If you are wondering if implants could improve your life please contact our office in downtown Parksville or Nanaimo. It could change your life!

There are vertical cracks to most foundations we inspect, however they are usually hairline or minor and uniform in size from top to bottom. Typical minor cracks are not usually a structural concern but they can be a potential area of concern regarding seepage or water entry, and need to be monitored or repaired as required to avoid a wet crawlspace or basement. Larger cracks, especially rotational cracks (wider at the top than the bottom) could be an indicator of structural movement. Horizontal cracks in the foundation can also have more serious structural implications. Look for other evidence in the living space above such as crooked doors, cracks in the drywall at the corner of doors and windows, or sags in the structure itself to determine potential problems. Both of these types of cracks should be checked or evaluated by a structural specialist or engineer as soon as possible. A conclusive determination can only be offered after an onsite evaluation. Is your skylight cooking you out of the house? You are not alone. In the last couple of weeks many homeowners have been calling in, asking if we have any solutions for their skylight problems. Thankfully, we have a few different solutions ranging from an add-on to your existing skylight to replacement with a high quality, properly configured skylight. Shade screens can be custom made to fit your skylight and can be removed in the winter to allow the additional light in. If you don’t cherish the thought of going up on your roof twice a year perhaps a replacement unit is a better fit for you. A high quality Low E skylight can reduce your solar heat gain co-efficient to 27%. If you want to be even more aggressive against the sun we have a brand new skylight available with an added bronze or grey reflective coating in addition to the LowE3 and argon for the best defense against solar heat gain. Both of the above options have the additional benefits of increased energy efficiency in the winter. I know, I shouldn’t use that word in July but I had to mention that bonus! Another benefit of replacements is having your skylight properly sealed and fastened to ensure energy efficiency while preventing a blow off in a storm event. (Which is surprisingly common!) Imagine a two hundred pound skylight airborne in your neighborhood! If it is your windows that are causing you to heat up this summer we have the right solutions for that problem as well. At Northpacific Window& Glass we look forward to hearing about your unique situations. Call us or stop in.

PUMPS/IRRIGATION Smart control your ticket to saving water and lowering your water bill
K e v in L u t er b a c h I r r i g a t io n P ro
IRITEX
PUMPS AND IRRIGATION
Most irrigation controllers are programed once and never touched again all season. The problem with that is the water requirements are not the same for May as they are for July. Most controllers will allow you to seasonally adjust your station run times simply by changing your percentage of run time. So if you set your controller for 10min and adjust your season percentage to 80% it will run for 8 minutes. This is a good first step but requires the owner or contractor to adjust two to three times a season. Smart Controllers do it for you automatically. The contractor or owner sets the program for the hotter months which are often July and August. And the controller’s outdoor sensor monitors the temperature and automatically changes the run time to suit the current conditions. These controllers save on average 30% per year on water usage. The Hunter solar sync smart control module can be added to most existing Hunter controllers. Smart control works so well that in 2010 the state of California mandated all new irrigation systems be installed with it.

Joanne Emma McIver
(nee Smith) March 18, 1927 - May 14, 2015
It is with heavy hearts, that we announce the passing of Joanne McIver. Predeceased by her husband Tom in 2003, Joanne lived 88 great years surrounded by amazing family and friends. Born in Calgary, Alberta to Margaret and Allan “Pete Smith, Joanne was sister to Richard (Dick), Dorothy, Ford, Ruth, Bill and Valerie. Joanne is survived by her children Carey (Annabel), Scott, Kristine (Roger) and grandchildren Alexandra and Hayden as well as many nieces and nephews. Joanne and Tom retired to Qualicum Beach in 1980 where they led a full and active retired life including lots of golf and volunteering. Joanne is remembered for her knack for telling jokes, dance moves, active lifestyle, family dinners and unwavering love of family and friends. The last three years in a care facility were difficult, however she faced them with her usual equanimity, grace and good humour. Our family would like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at the Qualicum Manor. Your exceptional care and kind support has been very much appreciated. A Celebration of Life will be held August 29, 2015 on the beach in Qualicum at Welch Park, 1234 Island Highway starting at 1:00pm - everyone welcome. Memorial donations may be made to the CNIB or to the Parkinson’s Society of BC.

HIGH JUMP & ROWING
Pan Am locals
Michael Mason and Kai Langerfeld are in Toronto at games T YSON TAYLOR sports@pqbnews.com
A couple of Ballenas Secondary School alumni are in Toronto for the Pan Am Games, which kicked off this past weekend and will run through to July 26. Michael Mason, from Nanoose Bay, and Kai Langerfeld, from Parksville, are both at the Pan Am Games in Toronto, looking to bring home a medal in their respective events. Mason, 28 years old, will compete in the high jump event, taking place on July 25, looking to bring home another medal to add to his resume. Mason is no stranger to the big stage as he’s represented Canada in the 2004 World Junior Championships, the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2010 Commonwealth Games. At the 2004 World Junior Championships, Mason jumped his way to a gold medal, becoming only the second Canadian to win a World Junior Championship gold medal (after Mark Boswell in 1996). Langerfeld, who turned 28 on July 5, will have a chance at a medal in two events as he and his team reached the finals in both the men’s coxless four and the men’s eight rowing events. The men’s four final took place on Monday (results not available at press time) while the men’s eight final will take place on July 15.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
Machete ready to use his new tools in the cage T YSON TAYLOR sports@pqbnews.com
Looking at a return to the cage later this year, Marco “Machete” Viedas is slowly easing back into life at home after a month in Montreal. Through June, Viedas trained at the famed Tri-Star Gym in Montreal, home to UFC stars like Georges St. Pierre, Jon Jones, Kenny Florian, Miguel Torres and Rory MacDonald, who was part of what many are calling the “fight of the year” at UFC 189. Viedas added a lot of new tools to his ever-growing mixed martial arts (MMA) arsenal. “It’s an amazing atmosphere,” Viedas said. “You take a look at the place
and on the outside, it doesn’t look like anything. It’s in a neighbourhood that doesn’t look all that great and there’s not much to it.” “As soon as you step inside, you’re blown away. I couldn’t believe how amazing it was. There are just so many things, from the equipment to the coaches and fighters, that are there to help you get better.” Viedas spent his time at Tri-Star learning new techniques and how to use them. While his fellow fighters spent time sparring, Viedas had to sit that out due to a concussion two weeks earlier. “It was terrible timing,” Viedas said. “It happened to me while I was training here before I left. I just got caught with
an accidental blow to the back of the head and it stunned me but I didn’t really think much of it.” “I went back out to train again and that’s when it really made me stop and think that there might be something wrong. Sure enough, it was a concussion. So I missed out on getting to spar while I was there but I was still able to learn a lot.” Viedas will slowly make the transition back into sparring back home in Parksville and he will continue to take precautions to heal before resuming full training. “I don’t want to have a relapse,” Viedas said. “I’m not sparring yet and I’m doing everything that I can to make sure
that I stay as safe as I possibly can so that I can heal up and get back to 100 per cent health before I start sparring again.” In the meantime, Viedas continues to work on the things he learned in Montreal and he’s excited to use his new abilities when he steps back in the cage for Battlefield Fight League. “I can’t wait,” Viedas said. “It’s one of those things where you’re so excited to get back to it but I just have to be patient.” “I’ve learned so much and I can already visualize everything I’m going to add in to my MMA game already and I’m just really pumped for that time to come when I can find another fight and show what I’ve learned in the cage.”

The Ladies Provincial Fours tournament took place in Port Alberni earlier this month and saw a local team win bronze. Played out under extremely hot temperatures in the Alberni Valley, the Mid Island Ladies Team of Mary Mulligan (skip) from Nanaimo, Parksville’s Chris Fereday (third), Qualicum Beach’s Jane Nielsen (second) and Lynn Chwartacki (lead) played their way to bronze. It was an all Vancouver final as the team of Mary Wright, Ann Mathie, Belle Chan and Ann
Van Bastelrie earned the gold medal and will represent B.C. at nationals in North York, Ontario (August 16-22). “We had a wonderful tournament,” skip Mary Mulligan said. “We were able to keep the spectators enthralled with six-18 end games over two days. I am very proud of our achievement against very tough opposition. We all enjoy playing together as a team, and owe a big thanks to Port Alberni LBC for hosting this event, and for taking very good care of all participants in true Island style.”

If you were to send people on a treasure hunt to discover historic aspects of Qualicum Beach – where would you send them? Since it is summer the first that comes to mind for me are the four poles on the waterfront. They were installed over fifty years ago and docks were attached to them. This is the area where swimming lessons were held. Recently someone told me of a time their swimming teacher gave them each a pet rock to look after. She buried hers for safe keeping and then was devastated to realize she couldn’t find it again. I imagine there are countless memories every year created at this same stretch of beach. The One Mile Swim which will enjoy it’s 58th year in 2015 begins in this area.
