amous for clean beaches with endless stretches of soft sand, fresh local and international cuisine, a diverse and thriving arts and culture scene and unrivaled sunsets, White Rock and South Surrey are well-loved vacation destinations. With plenty of local charm – not to mention great outdoor activities – you’ll quickly fall in love with this area, too! Crescent Beach Crescent Beach in South Surrey is known as one of the best swimming beaches in the Lower Mainland. It’s also popular with kayakers, fishermen, crabbers and those who simply seek a sunny retreat from the city. The community of Crescent Beach offers a handful of eclectic restaurants, too, many with ocean views. surrey.ca (Map 2, A2; Map 4) Photo: Kent Kallberg
Kwomais Point Park The Semiahmoo people who first occupied this area named it Kwomais – “place of vision” – thanks to its high bluffs and unobstructed ocean views. Today this scenic green space, situated just south of Crescent Beach in the Ocean Park neighbourhood, has been developed into a public park offering walking trails, exceptional vistas, public art installations and two unique heritage facilities – Kwomais Lodge and Sanford Hall – that attract visitors from near and far. oceanpark.bc.ca Photo: Chris Vranak

5,000 years ago:
1891:
1894:
The lands south of present-day Surrey are the traditional home of the Semiahmoo First Nation – a Coast Salish people whose culture is still vibrant in the area today.
An early settler, James Hawthornthwaite, buys land in White Rock to homestead. His quaint yellow house (one of the oldest in the city) still stands at 15180 Columbia Avenue.
Homesteader John Stewart completes his Fraser Valley Victorian-style farmhouse in South Surrey. Today this beautiful building is known as Historic Stewart Farm.
White Rock’s famous two-kilometre oceanfront promenade runs almost the entire length of the beach, providing plenty of access points to attractions like the Grand Chief Bernard Charles Memorial Plaza that speaks to the community’s strong ties to the Semiahmoo First Nation. The promenade also plays centre stage in White Rock’s many festivals and events, including the Spirit of the Sea Festival and summer afternoon musicians, plus makes a great place to watch the international Tour de White Rock cycling race. White Rock Pier White Rock’s 475-metre (1,559-foot) pier is a destination unto itself. Walk to the end to check out local fishermen’s daily catch and bask in the impressive views of Mount Baker and the San Juan Islands of Washington state. Take an after-dinner stroll to witness glorious sunsets and feel the ocean’s warm breeze. Originally built in 1914, the landmark pier was restored and re-opened some 70 years later and remains a hive of daily activity. (Map 5, F5) Photo: Chris Vranak
South Surrey’s Historic Stewart Farm Located in South Surrey’s idyllic Elgin Heritage Park this historic farm lets you step back in time from 1890 to 1920 and learn about the area’s early pioneering days. Built in 1894, the farm’s been lovingly preserved and restored and depicts life as it would have been for early settlers. Tour the immaculate grounds and the farmhouse, attend special events and learn all about pioneer life. 13723 Crescent Road 604.592.6956 | surrey.ca (Map 2, Locator 2)

Good Eats
W
ith variety the likes of a hearty seafood chowder, White Rock and South Surrey is a veritable catch-all of casual eateries, fine dining, gelato and ice cream parlors and pubs. Fresh and authentic is typical fare when it comes to the menu. Affectionately coined “Restaurant Row,” White Rock’s Marine Drive teems with a multicultural smorgasbord: Greek, Italian, Japanese, Indian,
Thai and West Coast cuisine. We’ve curated a collection of culinary offerings (some awardwinning) from around the city — suggestions on where to catch your next bite.
All your favourite Mediterranean offerings: think Dolmades, Rack of Lamb, Spanakota, Souvlaki and hot Saganaki zinged with lemon. Belly dancers, too.

White Rock & South Surrey Bucket List Beach.
✓ Spot Vancouver Island or the San Juan Islands from one of several viewing platforms in Kwomais Point Park.
✓ Lick a delicious ice-cream cone as you stroll White Rock’s famous promenade and pier.
✓ Experience what pioneering life was like with a visit to South Surrey’s Historic
White Rock & South Surrey 2015
✓ Look for (but don’t frighten) timid hermit crabs and shy sea stars along Crescent
Stewart Farm.
✓ Cheer on top athletes as they compete in the annual Tour de White Rock cycling race in July.
✓ Glide from tidal pool to tidal pool on a skimboard at East Beach. ✓ Keep an eagle eye out for hundreds of bird species in Boundary Bay and Mud Bay.

Tidal Pools
White Rock & South Surrey 2015
The soft sands and long tides at East Beach create crescent-shaped tidal pools when the ocean recedes. Kids can use skimboards to skip from pool to pool across the flat beach. The pools also make ideal playgrounds for young children, who can safely splash around looking for shellfish and other ocean life. There’s aquatic life waiting to be discovered at low tide on these shores, from clams and crabs to sparkly starfish, you’ll delight at the ocean’s diversity. Photo: White Rock Beaches
Tour de White Rock The 36th annual Tour de White Rock, part of BC Superweek (July 10-18), brings a series of world-class and amateur cycle road races, hill climbs and criterium to the seaside community of White Rock. Get Outside! Great Golf If your game is not in the same shape as South Surrey’s dozen or more lush, well-manicured links, we expect you’ll be looking for that sweet spot that will help you move up on the leader board. If you can relate to Lee Trevino’s self deprecating quip, “I’m not saying my golf game went bad, but if I grew tomatoes, they’d come up sliced,” then pack your clubs and check out a course that fits your game — we’re convinced you’ll find one here: MORGAN CREEK GOLF COURSE: This championship 18-hole course is a designated “Official PGA Tour Site.” 3500 Morgan Creek Way, Surrey | 604.531.4653 | morgancreekgolf.com HAZELMERE GOLF COURSE: Renovated in 2003, this 18-hole course has on-site tennis, too. 18150 8th Avenue, Surrey | 604.538.1818 | hazelmere.com

The exciting shoulder-to-shoulder sprints of the ‘Crit’ provide many thrilling moments as competitors surge ahead to chase cash in the prime (pronounced ‘preem’) laps. Racing in the lead pack and maneuvering for position is as exhilarating for the competitors as it is for the spectators.
SATURDAY, JULY 18: The weekend wraps up with this renowned race, which takes cyclists through the beautiful landscapes of White Rock’s hilly seaside.
