FOREST FIRES FORCE AIR QUALITY ADVISORY

Smoke on the water Drought continues; Parksville considers total watering ban JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

The smoke and ash enveloping the Parksville Qualicum Beach region these past few days is from three blazes in the Coastal Fire Region, two on the Island and one on the Sunshine Coast. Weather patterns and eye witness accounts suggest most of the smoke and ash here is coming from a forest fire just two kilometres outside Sechelt, roughly 50 kilometres as the gull flies across the Salish Sea. An air quality advisory has been issued for this region by the Ministry of Environment. Real time air quality information in B.C. is available at www.bcairquality.ca. “The Ministry of Environment in collaboration with Island Health has issued a Wildfire Smoke Advisory for the east and south coast of Vancouver Island from Campbell River to Victoria, including the interior community of Port Alberni, because of forest fire smoke that is affecting most areas,” said the advisory. “Smoke concentrations will vary widely as winds, fire behaviour and temperatures change. This situation is expected to persist until meteorological conditions change. Avoid strenuous outdoor activities. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, contact your health care provider: difficulty in breathing, chest pain or discomfort, and sudden onset of cough or irritation of airways. Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have underlying medical conditions such as diabetes and lung or heart disease.” The fire burning Sunday closest to Parksville Qualicum Beach was the Dog Mountain fire above the shores of Sproat Lake near Port Alberni. According to the B.C. Wildfire Branch, that fire was at 35 hectares (about 86 acres). Seasonal cabins were evacuated on Saturday. The fire is on steep terrain and as of Sunday afternoon had 21 firefighters and three helicopters on site. Parksville-based crews from the B.C. Wildfire Service are part of the battle against the Tsulquate River fire near Port Hardy. It was at 17 ha Sunday night and an evacuation order, put in place for dozens or residents on Saturday, was lifted Sunday. Many residents of Port Hardy remain on evacuation alert. Craig Street Market vendors help food bank

When The NEWS reported June 16 the Salvation Army Food Bank was looking for help to fill its shelves, it prompted some local merchants into action. A group of vendors has decided to challenge other vendors at the Craig Street Market in Parksville to collect donations at tonight’s market. Spearheaded by Megan Olsen of Arbutus Events, the campaign will have vendors bring totes to the market that will hopefully be filled with much-needed supplies. The wish list from the food bank includes things like juice, canned vegetables, soup, tuna, cereal, peanut butter, pasta sauce, Kraft Dinner, laundry detergent, baby wipes and paper towels Olsen said that when the newspaper article came out a group she belongs to that includes some of the areas young professionals agreed they wanted to do something to help. “I thought why not work together and do it at one of the outdoor markets,” she said. Kristy Stroulger-Lotzien of Soak Essentials on Craig Street along with her husband Tim who is a volunteer with the Parksville Fire Department will collect all the items at her store. The items will be delivered to the food bank on Wednesday. — Brenda Gough

Beachcomber strata issues water challenge

A challenge has been issued to all strata developments in Parksville Qualicum Beach. “Beachcomber Strata with 20 units are being proactive with the current severe water shortage and have voluntarily shut off all automatic sprinklers in order to help with the area shortage,” a member of the strata wrote in an e-mail to The NEWS. “We challenge all other strata’s to do the same.”

The Old Sechelt Mine fire was at 80 ha Monday morning and the Sunshine Coast Regional District issued an evacuation alert for 18 seasonal residences. According to the Sunshine Coast RCMP, a 61-year-old man from nearby Gibsons was killed Sunday while assisting with firefighting efforts. People in Sechelt — and many in Parksville Qualicum Beach — awoke Sunday and Monday morning to a layer of ash on their vehicles, driveways and houses. The continued hot, dry, conditions have also put much of Vancouver Island, including Parksville, at a Level 4 drought rating and forced officials to ban any kind of burning throughout the province. The forecast calls for high temperatures ranging from 25-31 degrees through Friday, with no rain expected. The province announced Level 4 drought conditions for Vancouver Island on Friday and took the additional action of suspending angling in streams and rivers throughout southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands due to ongoing low stream flows and warming water temperatures. “At Level 4, conditions are extremely dry,”

All water users are urged to maximize their water conservation efforts.” The City of Parksville was at Level 3 for watering restrictions as of Monday afternoon but city officials said they were considering a move to Level 4. At Level 4, residents are not allowed to water at any time — it’s a comprehensive watering ban. At Level 3, watering is allowed every other day for two hours a day (one hour at a time) between 6-10 a.m. and 6-10 p.m. The Regional District of Nanaimo has closed the Arrowsmith CPR Regional Trail that runs from Cameron Lake up to the old Arrowsmith ski hill. Teen facing theft charge CARLI BERRY

news@pqbnews.com

A 19-year-old woman from Parksville has been connected to stolen property, according to the Oceanside RCMP. A resident from Duncan had valuable items stolen from her vehicle while visiting one of the local resorts late last month. A cell phone, jewelry and some electronics were taken from the vehicle on June 27, said police. Cpl. Jesse Foreman said incidents of theft from vehicles don’t necessarily increase with the summer months or with the increase of tourism in Parksville. “It comes in waves,” he said. After an investigation was conducted, a search warrant was authorized and officers searched a residence in the 600 block of Island Highway East. It was there that police said they located the stolen possessions. Charges of possesssion of stolen property have been recommended to Crown counsel. Foreman said a step to prevent theft from a vehicle would be to not leave any valuable possessions in a vehicle. “When I go down to the river, or to the beach I carry my possessions with me,” said Foreman. “It’s tempting to leave a purse in the vehicle, but it’s best to keep it with you.” • Foreman said Parksville experienced a quiet Canada Day this year. “No charges were laid relating to the beach,” he said. “A few people were escorted from the beach due to public intoxication.” Foreman said there is a zero tolerance policy regarding the liquor control and licensing act violations. Under section 40 of the act it states that “except for liquor purchased and consumed in accordance with a licence that permits consumption in a public place, a person must not, in a public place, consume liquor or possess liquor in an open container.” The act continues that a person cannot consume liquor on a public beach, park or campground unless there is an order placed by the government of Canada or a bylaw set from the municipality or regional district. “It’s a family event, not a get drunk on the beach event,” said Foreman.

Three of five children in this family have serious health issues CARLI BERRY news@pqbnews.com

The Rod and Gun will be holding a Beer and Burger fundraiser for a local boy who has been diagnosed with brain cancer, said Micki Findlay, co-ordinator for the fundraiser. The three-year-old boy, Samuel Naylor, is receiving chemotherapy at B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver after surgery that removed part of a cancerous tumour that was wrapped around his brain stem, Findlay said. “No one wants to see a little child suffer like that,” said Monica Duncan, godmother to Samuel. Tickets for the fundraiser are $20 and can be purchased at Soak Essentials in Parksville and at Borealis Hair, Nail & Body Studio in Qualicum Beach.

The fundraiser will also have a silent auction, giveaways and a 50/50 draw, Findlay said. The event is on Sunday, July 19 from 2-6 p.m. Duncan said she got the idea to raise funds for Samuel after seeing Samuel’s health deteriorate and seeing his parents’ reactions. “I could see the look in (his father’s) eyes that said I don’t know what to do next,” Duncan said. Samuel’s parents, Marie and John, are actively involved in their community and deserve a chance for their community to give them support, Findlay said. Marie and John have volunteered their time at the Society of Organized Services with the children’s program and both help out at the Salvation Army, Findlay said. “They make a difference and so we felt like it’s time now to ask the community what can they help with… to make their (the Naylors) lives easier

through a difficult time,” Findlay said. Findlay said Samuel is not the only one in the family with health issues — three of the five children have serious health issues. Their goal is to reach at least $15,000, Duncan said, adding it is an ongoing process and they are unsure of what their ultimate goal will be. “Our real goal is not to have them worry that ‘we can’t help our children because we don’t have enough money.’” Duncan said they have received positive feedback from the community: “The community can’t be more helpful,.” There are tin cans to donate for Samuel in local businesses and a TD Bank account has also been set up under Samuel Naylor and John Naylor for people to donate across the country. Find out more about Samuel Naylor at GoFundMe.com/samuelnaylor or visit his Facebook page at facebook. com/samuelnaylorfundraiser.

Clarion proponent meets permit deadline AUREN RUVINSKY

Photo illustration submitted by town of Qualicum beach

An artist’s conception of The Clarion, next to the town hall in the village centre of Qualicum Beach.

Wayne Strandlund, owner of the proposed Clarion project in downtown Qualicum Beach, said the building permit deadline has been met and he is eager to proceed. “Town hall admin receipted the building permit application fee on June 23,” he told The NEWS by e-mail from Victoria, forwarding a July 3 e-mail exchange with director of planning Luke Sales. It includes the line “your application is now considered to be complete,” but points out there will likely be requests for more information and discussion.

The property is owned by a numbered company, which is wholly owned by Strandlund Investments, which is wholly owned by the Strandlund Family Trust, he said. “My long-standing friend and business partner, Bill Katerenchuk, through his company, Consulpro Inc, was the project manager,” he said of his local hands-on manager who died in May. “Bill’s role was to handle all development permit, zoning and land-use details as well as coordinating all professionals such as architects, designers, engineers, and so forth. Had Bill

not passed away, he would in all likelihood — and of course depending on his health — have managed and supervised the construction of The Clarion.” As recently as December, the project was on track. “We’re working with the town, we have construction drawings and the work is out to tender,” Katerenchuk told The NEWS at the time. Good for two years, council approved the current development permit for a 53 unit, five-storey condo development in July, 2013, which would have expired July 15 if the building permit had not been submitted.

Wednesday market delayed

AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

On again, off again, on again… currently the new Qualicum Beach Wednesday night Farmers’ Market is off again. After a stumble that saw them unable to hold the additional weekly market at their preferred Saturday morning location on Veterans Way, organizers announced they found a solution and moved it to the Qualicum Commons, school district property, scheduled to start tomorrow. “Basically there was a miscommunication between the farmers market and town council,” market president Lorne McCallum said.

“We’re pretty hopeful it will go, it’s clear the town is in favour when you read through the local-food policies,” he said, but confirmed it would not start this week. Worried about harming the Thursday evening street market run by the Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association, town council imposed fresh, local-food only restrictions that organizers said were too restrictive. While the move to school district property was meant to avoid town hall involvement, they still need a new business licence. “We hope to get together this week and resolve the issue,” McCallum said.

CANADA DAY CELEBRATIONS IN QUALICUM BEACH

Legion hosts special guest Former resident Liam Chambers delivered a heartfelt, earnest speech BRENDA GOUGH NEWS Contributor

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76 Qualicum Beach presented a colourful and impassioned Canada Day Ceremony on July 1. First vice president Rob Diack told the gathering it was a day for Canadians to celebrate and appreciate our wonderful country and what it means to be Canadian and how lucky we are to live in this country. The theme for this year was getting to know your neighbour, and making the entire neighbourhood a better place to live. A former Qualicum Beach resident was selected to bring home that message. Leading Seaman Liam Chambers delivered a heartfelt and earnest speech to the crowd who gathered after a short parade through the town. The former Kwalikum Secondary School student who is based at CFB Esquimalt talked about being selected to stand guard for the Tomb of the Unknown Solider at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The monument was created to honour more than 116,000 Canadians who sacrificed their lives in the cause of

peace and freedom. The ceremonial guard posting was a significant honour for Chambers, in light of the tragic death of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo late last year — an event that stunned the country, shedding light on the importance of sentry duty. Chambers, who performed sentry duty for the month of May, stood in the exact same spot as Cirillo.

I felt that I needed to do this as a military member and as a caring Canadian. Before I left I decided that it would be in his honour to try and learn everything I could about him. LIAM CHAMBERS

He told the gathering that it was an honour to be selected for the post. “The first thing that I thought about was the shooting and the murder of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo in Ottawa. I felt that I needed to do this as a military member and as a caring Canadian. Before I left I decided that it would be in his honour to try and learn everything I could about him. I read every article and I watched every video and I felt very connected to what I was about to do and felt like the weight on my shoulders was very heavy,” Chambers, 23,

told the gathering. He said it has been one of the best experiences he has had in his entire life. “The feeling of standing in the same spot as Nathan Cirrilo underneath that 70 foot statue in Ottawa was amazing. It was incredible. The people that I met, military and civilian were tremendously supportive and very happy about what I was doing.” He admitted he wasn’t really prepared emotionally for the experience he was about to go through and gave credit to his family for being supportive and always encouraging him to take on new challenges. “Growing up in a place like this and having the support that I have had from my family members who are here and my friends, everyone at school and my teachers has just been unbelievable.” Chambers is a lead seaman with Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Vancouver. He’s been in the Canadian Armed Forces for nearly four years and as a sonar operator does underwater warfare. Since his basic training in August of 2011 he has continued to challenge himself and recently finished an intense navy rescue course. Chambers said he plans to go further in the military. “I want to do something meaningful and challenging. I want to get into military search and rescue,” he said.

Virus forces public out of Arrowsmith Lodge Arrowsmith Lodge in Parksville is hoping to open to the public again later this week after a virus caused it to be closed starting Thursday, July 2. The Lodge is a complex care facility

ASAR looking for searchers It’s a great opportunity for people who enjoy the outdoors CARLI BERRY news@pqbnews.com

Arrowsmith Search and Rescue is looking for new members. The group is looking for around 10-15 people, said Lonny Barr, director of public relations for the ASAR. “Someone who loves spending time outdoors,” Barr said. Barr said the group trains volunteers for about two hours a week. “It’s an entry level position,” he said.

If you enjoy spending time outdoors and would like to be involved with a dedicated group of volunteers who make a positive contribution to our community, this is a great opportunity. The group is currently accepting applications and interviewing for its upcoming member-in-training course. It’s an opportunity for people to get a taste of what it’s like to be a part of Arrowsmith Search and Rescue, Barr said. If you are interested, please visit www.asar. ca or contact arrowsmithsar@shaw.ca. Application deadline for the course is August 31. — NEWS Staff/ASAR

Fairwinds buyer identified (Editor’s note: The NEWS received the following news release from Fairwinds just before press time on Monday. What follows is the unedited news release. Watch upcoming editions of The NEWS for more on the buyers of Fairwinds and their plans.) Bentall Kennedy announces that Vancouver-based Seacliff Properties Ltd. has agreed to purchase the Fairwinds Oceanfront Community on Vancouver Island. The purchase includes the Fairwinds Golf Course, Schooner Cove Marina, Fairwinds Centre and development lands. The sale to Seacliff is scheduled to complete on July 31, 2015. “This is excellent news for the Fairwinds community,” said Russell Tibbles of Bentall Kennedy. “Seacliff Properties Ltd. is an established development company experienced in managing and developing large scale real estate projects throughout Western Canada.” Seacliff will retain all full and part-time employees at the golf course, marina and community centre and it will be business-as-usual over the busy summer months. “We are very excited to take on the leadership role in operating and enhancing the wellknown and respected Fairwinds Oceanfront Community. We are hands-on and action oriented, and our intent is to work with all stake-

holders to move ahead with the approved vision for the future of Fairwinds,” said Ian Porter, Director of Real Estate for Seacliff. Fairwinds is an established master-planned residential and resort community on Vancouver Island, just 20 minutes north of Nanaimo. Anchored by the Fairwinds Golf Course (a Les Furber designed 6,204 yard course recently voted the #1 Golf Course on Vancouver Island) and Schooner Cove Marina (a 350 berth marina with direct access to world class fishing and cruising in the Strait of Georgia), Fairwinds has 727 existing homesites and development capacity for an additional 2,100 homes on the remaining 750 acres of undeveloped land. Please visit www.fairwinds.ca for more information. Seacliff’s management team has experience in every aspect of development, construction and management of commercial, office, recreational and residential projects. In addition to managing a portfolio of industrial and commercial income-producing real estate, Seacliff currently owns income-producing and re-development properties in Vancouver, West Vancouver and Surrey, along with a master-planned residential community in Colwood on Vancouver Island. Seacliff recently completed construction of The Watermark at Sechelt, a stunning two-phase waterfront residential development on the Sunshine Coast.

“Thank you M&N Mattress Shop for advising us on the wonderful sleeping and healing benefits of “Ironman” mattress set. I purchased the Ironman for my 17 year old daughter who has been struggling with lower back pain for the past two years. Within a month of great sleeps, she no longer requires her pain medication for sleep. She feels so much better and well rested. She was immediately able to sleep nights. Something she has not been able to do for a couple of years. I am so happy for her and thanks to all the wonderful people at M&N Mattress Shop.” Anita Cook, Parksville

“I have suffered for years with back issues. Since we purchased the Ironman T3.3 Recovery Mattress Queen Set, I have slept better and have not woken with a sore back. I wish I had found this mattress years ago.” Marilyn Hirschfield, Parksville

“I am a 45 year old woman diagnosed with MS. 2 years ago I was hit with a major MS attack that took away my mobility & doubled my pain. Oh, what a day!

C

anada Day is special in Parksville. And it doesn’t happen without some key people, organizations and businesses. This year’s event may have been the best in many years. It all starts with Mother Nature’s co-operation, and for that we are thankful. Unfortunately, Mother Nature can’t do it all. There are too many individuals, organizations and businesses to thank for this year’s wildly successful event in the park, but we would like to highlight a few. Everyone who volunteered some time deserves a pat on the back. First, the Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce. This year has been a good one for the chamber in terms of stepping up to the plate to help the wider community. The Rotary Club had to step aside from co-ordinating the massive event this year. It’s a huge undertaking and we need to thank them for the years of service they did provide for Canada Day. If you have ever been affiliated with a non-profit group, you know that after a while, volunteer-fatigue sets in. We get that. The chamber stepped into the huge void to lead the July 1st festivities this year, just like it did when it looked like the city was falling down in its plan to close the concession in the park and call for food trucks. This chamber of commerce and its members have embraced a community-minded attitude and deserve our applause. To Megan Olsen, who was largely responsible for the entertainment and could be seen literally mending fences even as the last act of the day was playing on stage: congrats and thanks. The variety of music offered and the presence of a legitimate headliner (The Odds) gave the entertainment portion of the festivities real cache. To Thrifty Foods: the fireworks are always a highlight of the day every year and that can’t come cheap. Thanks. To the Oceanside RCMP: a job well done. Their presence — on foot, on bikes, in cars — throughout the day and night discouraged those who would ruin it for others. One is less likely to crack a beer or spark a spliff or commit vandalism if one consistently sees a police officer in one’s peripheral vision. To the residents and visitors to this great city on this great day: thanks for having fun in a respectful, responsible way. Can hardly wait until next year. — Editorial by John Harding

The Parksville Qualicum Beach News Tuesday, July 7, 2015

Rail-TRail TouRism I would like to thank recent letter writer Les Anderson for writing such an excellent letter in regard to the “rail to trail” idea. The plan and thoughts expressed in his letter were voicing the wishes of so many residents in our beautiful community. And he said it all so well. What a boost to tourism this would be. Hopefully the right people are listening. SuSan MoStyn Parksville

Bss paRade Thanks On behalf of the 2015 Ballenas grads and their parents, I would like to acknowledge and thank the Citizens On Patrol (COPs) volunteers from Oceanside Community Safety who came out Saturday June 27 under sunny and very hot skies to man our Parksville parade route and control local traffic. The grads had a great parade and will no doubt fondly remember the day and their Prom Night for the rest of their lives. These volunteers contribute to the heart of Oceanside and should be very proud of their contributions. JaMeS Craig, Parade Chair, BallenaS grad Parent CoMMittee Parksville

paRade hogs I must have missed the memo telling anyone who wished to attend our Canada Day parade to come really early and set up your camp chairs in a huge, unending line (with plenty of space in between for your late-arriving friends, obviously), then vacate the area, only to return after 10 a.m. to claim your “reserved” space. When did this become a thing at our parade? It reminded me of deck-chair hogs at cheap resorts, running out at 6 a.m. and selfishly “claiming” their chair, only to saunter in at noon. I have always found this unbearably selfish and inconsiderate. We arrived at the parade at 9:20 a.m. with my 87-year-old grandmother in tow, coming early to ensure she wouldn’t have far to walk. We were met with at least 150 meters full of continuous, unoccupied chairs. Then maybe a couple of actual people, then huge rows of more unoccupied chairs. After walking a fair way, we found a spate of empty chairs spaced out amply enough to allow us to squeeze our chair in for Grams. We settled in, and just after 10 a.m. the large

www.pqbnews.com

QuoTaBle:

“Even the smallest ember could spread quickly within our local forests with potentially deadly results.” darryl KohSe, see story page a3

crew of space-hogs arrived to take their places. They stood in front of us, loudly (but passive-aggressively) complaining that “someone” must have moved their chairs. I asked them if they would prefer us to take Grams and walk another few hundred meters down the road — perhaps that would be more convenient for them? They declined but continued grumbling a fair bit. Seriously, people. This is a small town with a lot of elderly people. We didn’t see anyone “reserving” spaces who was elderly. Every one of them was able-bodied. How about arriving at a reasonable time beforehand and finding a space, then actually sitting in it, first-come, first-served, like everybody else? It’s a far more civilized and considerate thing to do at such a great community event. Sharon todd Parksville

nanoose waTeR It was smack between the eyes to read your two front page articles in the July 2 edition of The NEWS. On the one hand, you draw the reader’s attention to the lack of rain and the prolonged heat wave that is increasingly a feature of our local summers. Fires are breaking out all over the Island, the rivers are low, Mt. Arrowsmith is already bare and residential water usage has been restricted for weeks. On the other hand, you inform us of a plan for Fairwinds which offers the prospect of less green space, many more houses, and a population in Nanoose Bay which will apparently double over the next 20 years. Those of us who live in Nanoose Bay are already subject to water shortages which, in the opinion of most climate scientists, are likely to get worse over time. With a projected doubling of the population in this corner of Vancouver Island, I believe it is time to give some serious thought to where the water is going to come from to support this massive increase. The entire RDN, in its population study of 2007, predicted a growth of 60 per cent over 30 years. Even communities with explosive growth rates — and all the attendant problems — come nowhere near the locally-projected 100 percent increase in 20 years your article suggests. Until we have the water problem solved, maybe it would be wise to place a moratorium on new building permits in Nanoose

Bay and look for creative conservation options rather than simply rationing water, as is already happening. Or shall we, like the doomed inhabitants of Easter Island, just squander our precious resources until there are none left?

F.C. Telus ToweR Thank you to John Harding for discussing another concern regarding the problematic anomaly known as French Creek (The NEWS, July 2 editorial). The governance of this area leaves much to be desired. With no disrespect to Joe Stanhope, who has worked diligently for many years to represent Electoral Area G residents, he is our only voice on a council which no longer meets our needs. We have very little say in matters which concern us as tax-paying residents. That two people could convince the council to reverse its stand regarding the Telus mobile communication tower is disturbing. They may be well-intentioned (even the anti-vaccine people are well-intentioned) but the safety of many in this area continues to be compromised due to spotty cell reception. We pay our taxes to the province which in some manner unknown to me give some back to the RDN to provide us with services. But we also pay more money to RDN for other services as outlined on the back of their bill. The only provincial benefit the folks in French Creek have received lately is word that a bureaucrat in Victoria has approved a massive increase in the price we pay Epcor for water. In a letter to residents, the water comptroller said that advertising the increase was enough on his part and couldn’t be bothered taking the time to travel from Victoria to meet concerned citizens. These are only two of many problems this governance system fails to address. Isn’t it about time Electoral Area G as a civic entity be relegated to the history books and a new approach taken? Couldn’t the area of French Creek west of the creek itself be amalgamated with Qualicum Beach? Couldn’t the area east of the creek become part of Parksville along with Surfside and San Pareil?

letters

Such a dead Qualicum Beach We recently entertained dinner guests, and as they were not familiar with Qualicum Beach, encouraged them to come through town rather than around. They arrived at 5:30 p.m. and their first comment was “What a dead town!” Evening markets are to be applauded for their help in correcting this sad state of affairs and merchants could do more in this regard than complain, especially during the period of our lovely summer evenings. Wilfrid Worland Qualicum Beach

Qualicum Beach’S ‘unlimited water’

In regards to Qualicum Beach’s supposedly unlimited supply of water from town wells in the Little Qualicum River aquifer and the record low flows in the river. The “I’m OK” attitude in the past of the Qualicum Beach mayor and now the director of engineering (The NEWS, July 2) is becoming tiresome to say the least. The meaningless water restrictions of only watering 14 hours a day is a farce. Qualicum Beach does share this water with other wells in the neighbourhood (who actually have meaningful water restrictions) and by their unlimited use, endanger those other wells with salt intrusion from the ocean when the fresh water table is lowered. This will permanently damage those wells. When those wells are destroyed will Qualicum supply them with water? I doubt it. douglas Einarson Dashwood

cell tower fearS What’s wrong with our society that we let people who just have a feeling about something with no tangible proof to their claim dictate what will happen with cell towers? Are these the same people who don’t vaccinate their children? Maybe they believe the world is only 6,000 years old or that the railway on Vancouver Island will someday be viable. There is no scientific proof that low levels of radio frequencies are harmful. How many of these people use a cell phone every day? Did you realize that you are already being hit with radio waves 24 hours a day from radio and television signals, UHF, remote controls, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and many more. Does science not count for anything anymore? I rely on scientific data for much of what

I believe to be facts. Perhaps we should fear the unknown as there have been mistakes in the past, but not so much these days with countless scientists all coming to similar conclusions. These scientists for the most part do not work for a company or corporation that supports a product and if they did their research would be quickly dismissed. Should there be a limit on the number of radio waves we’re subjected to? Sure, why not, let’s implement some standard right after we get better cell coverage in French Creek. gEorgE olmstEad French Creek

crippling inflation from private deBt

I am pleased to see others writing about the disastrous private funding of government debts. Two such letters in the last few weeks have supported my ongoing criticisms, while yet another from Colin Bartlett thinks it all works fine and should not be touched. Meanwhile, all such debts grow relentlessly, their huge interest charges not only contributing inflation — the deficits require creation of extra money against no new asset — but they result in a steady stifling of all programs in a vain attempt to balance budgets repeatedly broken by those massive interest payments. The matter will not go away, it must be directly addressed, not smothered by irresponsible quotes like recent letter writer Bartlett’s “1.5 per cent inflation over the last five years” which would hardly be noticeable; I suggest most people have a more realistic view of things. There is nothing wrong in a government lending money to itself, as Bartlett intimates. Indeed we did exactly that for 40 years with excellent results until the Lib/Con continuum killed it. And never mind North Dakota’s 90year successful practice, think of modern China’s for the last 60 — from being a basket-case they are now number two in the world without the crushing usury at present destroying Greece, and crippling Spain, Ireland and many other massively indebted nations, not excluding Canada. The private banking system has its hands very tightly in our government’s purses; only a determined new, basically different ideology can get them out. So talk to your Lib/Con representatives, and your NDP and Green candidates and probe their reactions, for the mutually self-supporting debt/interest combination can only grow. It is what it is designed to do. russ VindEn Errington

How do you spell discord? I.K.E.A Want to find out if your marriage is strong like bull or flaccid as a pajama drawstring? Here’s a simple test. Take your mate to Ikea. A psychologist at California State University says if your union can survive that, chances are the two of you will be blowing out candles on your 60th wedding anniversary. Professor Ramani Durvasula says a visit by wannabe life partners to the iconic Swedish furniture store can make or break the relationship. She often goes herself (solo) with a clipboard in hand. “It’s like psychology porn,” she says. A furniture store as a marriage breaker — who’da thunk it? Professor Durvasula says the trouble usually starts in the kitchen section. It begins as a mild difference of opinion over the dishwasher and ends in a screaming match about who does the most cooking or who never cleans out the fridge. When she can get their attention, Professor Durvasula asks couples who have bought furniture to report back to her after they take it home and assemble it. That’s when the heavy matrimonial bombardment really starts. Relationships can usually skate through minor assembly jobs like coffee tables and book cases. It’s the more complicated items

that take their toll. PARKSVILLE DOWNTOWN BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

Students bring tourism service to the people They will be wearing orange ball caps and bright green shirts CARLI BERRY news@pqbnews.com

The Parksville DowntownBusiness Association acquired two students this summer for a pilot project. The Grade 12 students will be promoting downtown businesses and providing tourism services. “There’s no downtown visitor center so we’re going to bring the service to the people,” Pamela Bottomley, executive director for the PDBA, said. They’ll be answering questions from locals and visitors alike, Bottomley said. Aomi Jokoji said the PDBA provided him with a different opportunity than the hospitality jobs available for students in the area and the other student this year, Austin Smith, said: “It gives you a chance to contribute to the community.” The PDBA looked for summer students in the local secondary schools, Bottomley said. “I think it’s good for secondary students to get a taste of the

work world,” she said. The students will also be tracking pedestrian movement around the downtown area and mapping wi-fi spots. “That’s one of our longer term goals, is to try and improve the pedestrian friendliness downtown.” Bottomley said. “You’re working, not only in the very, you know, business improvement atmosphere… but working with the public… you get the experience with talking to people” Smith said. The students received training from the visitor’s centre last week and will also be working with the Chamber of Commerce, Bottomley said. The students will also be tracking what questions they’re asked so the PDBA will be able to better understand the business opportunities available. The students started on June 22 and will work until Aug. 28. Bottomley said she hopes to continue the project and eventually hire two teams of summer students. The students will be wearing orange ball caps and bright green shirts around Parksville’s downtown. “Look out for the bright orange hats,” Smith said. “You can’t miss them.”

REAL ESTATE STATISTICS FROM JUNE

Housing market shows no signs of slowing down A robust provincial economy and bolstered consumer confidence are fuelling home sales on the Island, with a strong spring sales market showing no signs of slowing as we head into summer, says a news release from the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB). In June, 636 single-family homes sold on the MLS system compared to 527 last month, an increase of 20 per cent. Yearover-year, sales rose 36 per cent over the 469 single-family homes sold last June. Inventory levels continue to decline in our area, with active listings down ap-

proximately 13 per cent since June 2014. VIREB represents nearly 940 realtor members in approximately 90 member offices on Vancouver Island (north of Victoria). BCREA Chief Economist Cameron Muir reports that B.C.’s economy is leading Canada, with 2.4 per cent growth expected this year. Low interest rates, confident consumers, and limited inventory in many areas are driving B.C.’s strong housing market. “With no interest-rate hike on the horizon, we’re unlikely to see any cooling in the next couple of quarters,” says Muir.

“Consumers are out buying in a big way, and there is lots of competition for available listings.” In June 2015, the benchmark price for a single-family home in the VIREB coverage area was $335,400, up 4.24 per cent from last year. Benchmark pricing tracks the value of a typical home in the reported area. The average price was up four per cent, with a single-family home selling for $359,970 compared to $346,713 in June 2014. The June 2015 benchmark price of a single-family home in the Campbell Riv-

er area was $283,300, an increase of 6.51 per cent from last year. In the Comox Valley, the benchmark price was $334,000, up 2.89 per cent over 2014. Duncan reported a benchmark price of $298,300, an increase of 6.42 per cent over the same month in 2014. Nanaimo’s benchmark price rose 3.51 per cent to $350,200 while the Parksville-Qualicum area saw its benchmark price rise a little over four per cent to $369,800. The price for a benchmark home in Port Alberni was $190,600, down 6.36 per cent since June 2014. — NEWS Staff/VIREB news release

BARD TO BROADWAY OPENS ITS 16TH SEASON WITH THE 39 STEPS

Fast-paced whodunnit is packed with laughs Play is adapted from a 1915 novel and a 1935 Hitchcock movie REVIEW BY BRENDA GOUGH NEWS Contributor

What do you get when you mix an Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel and add a dash of Monty Python? The result is comedy/mystery/adventure melodrama that is packed with nonstop laughs. The 39 Steps opened another great season of Bard to Broadway summer repertory theatre at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach July 3. Adapted from the 1915 novel by John Buchan and the 1935 Hitchcock film The 39 Steps is a fast-paced whodunit. The original concept and production of a four-actor version of the story was by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon. Patrick Barlow re-wrote this adaptation in 2005. Closely following the storyline of Hitchcock’s 1935 film, the play features more than 150 characters brought to life by a ridiculously talented cast of just four people. The 39 Steps opens with the dashing bachelor Richard Hannay played Dan Osleeb who laments that he is bored with life. He heads out to a London theatre where he gets mixed up with a paranoid vampy German mystery woman named Annabella performed by Kari Larsen. When she is murdered in Hannay’s apartment after revealing fragments of an espionage plot, a mysterious organization called The 39 Steps is hot on Hannay’s trail in a nationwide manhunt. With Hannay on the run, seeking to uncover secrets in a remote Scottish town his main obstacles are a series of cops and country bumpkins played masterfully by Gary Brown and Rob Atkinson; two of this area’s greatest comedic actors. This play depends on physical comedy and Brown and Atkinson handle the brunt of the production’s many quick changes … not just costumes but accents and genders. Using props like hats and the ability to switch accents — as well as costumes

— on a dime, the characters cross and double-cross each other. Solving the mystery is not half as engaging as the riotous stage action that sprints from London to Scotland. Its great fun to watch scenes come alive through nothing more than simple props and theatrical magic. Furniture appears out of nowhere and the audience gets to imagine characters riding on a whizzing train which is brilliantly re-created with just some crates. Throw in a hilarious on-stage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers and some good old-fashioned romance and you have a snappy, laugh-filled and smashingly acted little show that keeps on delivering. While Osleeb plays just one role, he is onstage nearly the entire time and convincingly portrays a regular fellow in extraordinary circumstances. With an eyebrow in the cocked-andlocked position and a trim moustache, Osleeb is 1930s period-perfect. Hannay’s unwilling partner in crime is delightfully portrayed by Larsen who lends comic support and sexual sizzle in her roles as a mysterious spy who gets the intrigue going, a sex starved farmer’s wife and an uptight blond who, after ratting out Hannay to the authorities, ends up in a hotel room bed with him. One of Osleeb and Larsen’s finest moments is in Act 2, as they pull off awkward twists and turns while handcuffed to each other. As Brown and Atkinson play a multitude of parts, they effortlessly juggle characters, costumes and accents — sometimes within a single scene. Their stage frolics prove endlessly entertaining. As underwear salesmen on a train they are hilarious and the scene they are in involving a plane crash is over-the-top funny. Brown is priceless as Mr. Memory, the music-hall performer while Atkinson is devilishly evil as the spy mastermind. It’s a tremendous feat to get the comedy, timing and split-second costume changes just right. You require a gifted cast, a stellar production crew and a skilled director to

A hilarious comedy, The 39 Steps, which opened the 16th season of Bard to Broadway at the Village Theatre, is a dizzy delight. Feelings expressed powerfully A group of artists who were asked to express their feelings on life, aging and more in an artistic exhibit gathered at The Old Schools House (TOSH) on June 30 to launch the show at the Qualicum Beach arts centre. Existential Elders is a unique and powerful exhibit featuring the work of 16 artists all over the age of 65. Curated by Marci Katz it includes a wide range of different artistic mediums by artists from Vancouver Island, many from Parksville and Qualicum Beach. There are paintings and carvings and even a coffin in the exhibit. Katz agreed that although some pieces are edgy and deal with some heavy topics including confronting death, there are plenty of lighter pieces on display. “There is also some humour in the show. As you get older you either laugh at all the things that old age brings or you cave in,” she admitted. In her curators statement Katz who

KRAZY at the creek

‘cause it’s HOT

French Creek Marine PUB 1025 Lee Road, Parksville

is also a maturing artist explains that artists are accustomed to living on the fringes of society, looking in. “We are typically less conventional, more experimental, more critical of society and often poorer, less secure and more isolated than the average citizen.” “Then suddenly we’re seniors, part of the fastest growing and most conservative demographic in the country. But we’re not typical seniors; we generally remain marginal and we don’t retire. We continue to work because making art has become our life and still defines us. We’ve become what I call cultural elders.” She said the traditional role of elders in society is the sharing of wisdom with younger generations. So what do the cultural elders have to say about the human condition, aging, the passage of time and their personal search for meaning in life? Katz said the messages being expressed in the exhibit are clear. “Invest in relationships, devote yourself to creative work and immerse yourself in it for the rest of your life. Carrying a creative passion into old age keeps the physical and emotional trials of aging in perspective and nourishes ones sense

of meaning and purpose. The exhibition was first presented last summer at the Nanaimo Art Gallery and then in Powell River in September 2014 and Katz said it was well received. “Reaction from the public has been fantastic. I have not heard an adverse word. I think people are quite surprised at the level of energy and the level of power in some of this work. I don’t know if people expected little landscapes and rainbows but we are not that. We hope people are inspired and see that creative work keeps you young and you are never too old to do it.” Katz agreed that artists are like fine wine … they get better with age and the group she assembled is proof of that. “Most of us have been doing this for many decades and you have no compunction about saying what you think as you can see from some of the statements in the exhibit. They are pretty direct.” The senior artists include: Donna Balma, Anna Banana, Bill Friesen, Famous Empty Sky, D.F. Gray, Tim Haley, Jeff Hartbower, Barbara Hutson, Marci Katz, Ursula Medley, Robert Moon, Sharon Urdahl, Ed Varney, Lynn Orriss, Joe Rosenblatt and Jo Swallow.

TILLIE DESMEULES

Lou came and got Tillie on June 11 at the Qualicum Manor. She was 88 years old. Tillie was the only child of John & Helen Roskewich, born in Wandering River Alberta Nov. 11, 1926. She was predeceased by her first husband Adolph (1956), son Allen (1993) and husband Lucien (2002). Tillie loved being post-mistress of Merville and Bowser over the years. She was a devoted Lioness, was always volunteering, and always gave her time. She was proud of her four boys through thick and thin, and even dementia. Tillie is survived by sons Gerry (Gerry), Deas (Pam), David (Lo), cousin Rose, Shady, Lou’s niece Nicole and grandchildren Alyce, Liza, Lyssa and Krista. Celebration of Life will be held at the Bowser Legion July 11, 2015 at 1:00 pm. Tillie was a terrific person and a wonderful mother.

James Gregory Smith (Jim Smith) December 30, 1931 – June 29, 2015

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear Dad, Jim Smith. Jim passed away suddenly in his home on our beloved Hornby Island, BC. He is predeceased by his wife, Jose’ Doreen Smith (East) on July 29, 1995. He leaves behind his two daughters Miranda-Jo (Dave) Andersen and Lisa Smith; his grandchildren Kyle Teschke (Zoe), Jared Teschke (Melanie), Dale Andersen, Josie Bizicki and Zoe Bizicki; his great grandson Theodore Teschke, born June 13, 2015. He also leaves behind his very good friend and neighbour on Hornby Island, April Shopland. April was so good to Dad and such a good friend over the years, and for that we are truly thankful. Jim was born in Workington, England. He and Jose’ married in August 1959 and came to Trail, BC, to teach at the J. Lloyd Crow High School for just two years, before they were to go back home to England. It was not to be, as he was offered a job at Dutchess Park High School in Prince George, so off they went for another adventure. There they brought up their two daughters until Jim retired as Principal of DP Todd Secondary School in 1989. Jim and Jose’ retired to spend half their time in Yorkshire, England and the other half on Hornby Island. There will be a funeral Mass at The Church of the Ascension, 887 Wembley Rd., French Creek, on Wednesday, July 8, at 11:00 a.m. Please consider honouring Jim’s memory by making a donation to a charity of your choice.

Junette Margaret Hollingworth, born November 18th, 1934, passed away June 27th, 2015 in Qualicum Beach British Columbia with her family and loving husband of 62 years Lyle Hollingworth. Pre-deceased by son Robert Hollingworth 1983. June resided with her mother Margaret, and father Joseph, for twelve years in Headquarters, where she created wonderful memories and friends, before relocating to Victoria where she married Lyle in 1953, and happily became a daughter to Art and May Hollingworth. Through love and partnership, Lyle and June raised four boys, Ken (Arlene), James (Dorrie), Ronald (Janine), and Bobby, before moving to Parksville and continuing to parent and grandparent for her remaining thirty years. June has left behind brother James (Shirley), brother-in-law Hugh (Shirley), her sister Martha (Tom), granddaughters Ashley, Courtney and Ayla, grandsons Robert, Shawn, Ryan, James and Thomas, great-grandchildren Ryder and Emma, as well as the extended family and friends. The family would like to give a special thanks to Doctor McClure and his wife Diane for their extraordinary care and compassion for June, as well as the entire family. June will be remembered for her incredible kindness, and the dedication she had to love and provide strength and courage to her family and friends. In celebration of June’s life, and in respecting her wishes, Lyle and family will be gathering privately in the near future.

In loving memory

Royals’ young players lose 2 of 4

Royals beat Blue Jays and played well against North Shore Twins, but not good enough T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com

Wrapping up a busy week at home this past weekend, the Quality Foods Parksville Royals came away with two out of a possible four wins against the North Delta Blue Jays and North Shore Twins. Earlier in the week, the Royals dropped a pair of home games on Canada Day to the Victoria Eagles (3-1, 7-3). On Saturday, the Royals beat the second place Blue Jays 5-4 and 6-2. Sunday, the Royals were in action against the Twins, coming up on the losing end in both games (6-0, 8-1). With both games won by the Twins on Sunday, the Royals — and their 18 and under players — lost the best two out of three series against the Twins, who were also fielding a team of players 18 years old and younger. The Twins will now represent B.C. at the Baseball Canada 18-U National Championships in Quebec. “We were in tough against North Shore,” head coach Dave Wallace said. “They’ve got a good group of younger players

and they were the better team out there. We did a lot of good things on Saturday but unfortu-

nately it didn’t carry over for us on Sunday.” The Royals were held to just

one run in two games on Sunday, to go along with just four hits through two games.

It was a much different story on Saturday, when the Royals won both games of a double-header against the second place North Delta Blue Jays. Adam McKillican had the bat going in both games for the Royals, going 2-2 with two RBI’s in game one and 3-4 in game two. Robbie Dhut picked up the win in game one, coming on in relief of starter Zack Senay, who went four innings on the mound, giving up three runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Dhut pitched two innings, giving up one run to go along with one strikeout. Liam Janzen came on to close-out the game in the seventh inning, earning the save. Hayden Scheck started game two against the Blue Jays for the Royals, going four innings while giving up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Dean Leyland came into a tie ball game and pitched three shutout innings, giving up just two hits to pick up the win. The Royals were able to bring four runs across in the bottom of the sixth inning to break the tie and come away with the 6-2 win. See RoyalS played, page A32

Qualicum Beach’s Thomas Riva and local MLA Michelle Stillwell both captured gold medals at the Canadian National Track and Field Championships in Edmonton, Alberta this past weekend.

Riva, a former member of the Oceanside Track and Field Club (OTFC) and University of Victoria Vikings Track and Field team, finished with a time of four minutes and 6.16 seconds, capturing gold in the 1,500 metre event. Stillwell also captured a gold at the

event, coming in first place in the women’s 100-metre. She also placed fifth in the 400-metre race as well. Also competing were current OTFC member Thomas Oxland and alumni Alycia Butterworth. Oxland, who is heading to UVic next year with twin brother Pe-

ter, finished seventh in the junior men’s 800-metre. Butterworth, coming off a stellar career at Idaho University, finished in fourth place in the 3,000 metre steeplechase, missing the podium by a hundredth of a second at 10:10.75.

“We were able to take advantage of our runners,” Wallace said. “We had guys in scoring position and we hit them around to score,” he said. “It helps to have a little bit of help sometimes too, luckily for us we were able to capitalize on a couple of errors to get those runs across.” “But we played well against a very good North Delta team,

they’ve been solid all season and to see the way we played against them on Saturday was great. Two hard earned wins against a very good ball club.” The Royals are back in action this weekend as they head over to the mainland for their final road trip of the season. Saturday, they will take on the White Rock Tritons and Sunday they’ll take on the North Shore Twins.

North Island Royals filled with locals

12-member team from entire North Island stacked with five Parksville Qualicum Beach players T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com

The Bantam AAA North Island Royals are going to be hosting the first ever Battle for the Rock tournament this weekend at Springwood Park for bragging rights against three other teams from Vancouver Island. Made up of players in Grades 8 and 9, the North Island Royals have a team of players from all across Vancouver Island and Powell River. Players from Oceanside, Port Alberni, Courtenay, Comox, Campbell River and Powell River all tried out for the team in February. Out of the 30 players who tried out, 12 were selected. Five North Island Royals represent the Parksville Qualicum Beach region this season. Ethan Christensen, Kiran Carcary, Brandon Nicoll, Kieran Bowles and Griffin Mallicoat all earned a spot on the 12man roster and will be in action at home this upcoming weekend with the rest of their team. “It’s pretty special,” Oceanside Minor

Baseball President Mike Parlow said. “In a typical year, Oceanside will usually have one or two players on the

North Island Royals team. So having five regulars on the squad is pretty cool.” Also worth noting, Brandon Nicoll

Players will try out for one of 15 spots available for Team B.C., which will be taking part in the Pacific Northwest Championship Tournament in Washington State. Recently, the North Island Royals took part in the Bantam AAA Top 10 tournament in Delta, B.C. Coming in ranked 10th out of the 10 teams participating, the Royals had a battle on their hands and head coach Ryan Chenard was very proud of the way his team came to play. “We played real well,” Chenard said. “We were the tenth seed and finished in fifth place. We were able to beat the fourth and sixth seeded teams along the way.” “We hit .385 as a team for the tournament and had a strong, consistent effort from our pitching staff.” See North ISlaNd, page A34

DIAMOND ACTION: The Tigers took on the Buzzards in slo-pitch action down at the Parksville Community Park last week under sunny, blue skies.

With just two games remaining in their regular season, the North Island Royals have a record of 14 wins and 14 losses but still have a good chance of qualifying for the provincial championships later this month. In the meantime, the Royals will host the Battle for the Rock tournament at Inouye-Wallace Field in Parksville this weekend. There will be four teams in total vying for the title of “Best on the Rock” as the

Victoria Red Eagles, Duncan Mustangs, Nanaimo Pirates and the host North Island Royals will all do battle in the two-day tournament. There will be four games each day: 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The North Island Royals will kick off the tournament against the Duncan Mustangs at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. The Royals will then play against the Nanaimo Pirates at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. In partnership with

www.fairwinds.ca You may never find another instance in life whereby five grown men show more interest, focus and dedication to one particular moment than that of watching a well hit golf shot on Men’s night. Men’s Night at Fairwinds This was the case last Thursday when I joined my golfing friend Al Wiet and three other golfers, Neil, Gord and Paddy for 9 holes at Fairwinds Golf Club on a very hot Nanoose Bay night. Although finding the ball and even the flag in this photo may be difficult trust me when I inform you the “blue arrow” points to the great approach shot flying through the air that the affable Irishman, Paddy, pured right at the hole. If there is one event that I leave work early for, quickly rushing home to get cleaned up and then cruising to the course with a big smile on, it’s this one. With my game lately being less than stellar I have to admit that one of the most anticipated highlights occurs after the game when the dinner bell rings in the dining room. My do they serve a really great meal there and who says taking five different desserts back to the table is greedy? Of course, there are other highlights besides playing this gem of a course, that even in these dry scorching conditions was in excellent condition. Upon arrival amidst the

buoyant banter in the pro shop the reception you receive from the A-Team of customer service lead by Ryner Wilson and his ace in the hole, the ever present and effervescent star of the show Marilyn and a host of talented others makes you feel you have come to the right place. Whether it’s playing in a Men’s night, taking golf lessons, hitting balls on the range or simply showing up for dinner in the dining room or lunch on the deck, Fairwinds Golf Club invites you to come and be a part of the Fairwinds experience anytime, all persons are welcome. Thank you Mr. Scott Two summers ago at the behest of my good friend Ron Chiovetti, of Isle Golf Cars, I joined a Men’s night

team with Ron at Fairwinds which included Mr. Neil Scott one of the key driving forces behind the development of Fairwinds and the construction of the course built by GDS, headed up by Les Furber. Having had 5 years myself building and then working at a GDS designed golf course in Saskatchewan, Neil and I had plenty to talk about with regards to the course, its design style and his vision. I loved the time spent golfing with Neil and the fellas that night and although he openly shared with us he was not at his peak healthwise he never once made any excuses, complained or suggested in any way that he wasn’t loving and living life to the fullest. He sadly left us recently, as many of you know, and

the beautiful manicured park-like grounds that are more commonly known as Fairwinds Golf Club is a wonderful reminder of his legacy and contribution to this island paradise we can all be thankful to live on. He was truly a lovely man. What’s in a name? Well for someone who has had his name misspelt far too many times myself, Jack I am sorry, amidst the crunching of the salad in my mouth I thought I heard your name was Whitfield and no it is not. The talented chef at Arrowsmith is none other than Mr. Jack Wakefield. Like if your name is Kent, it’s not spelt Trent. Stay in touch and ,as always, “Good golfing”.
