Two-time defending champions of the doubles division, the Quebec-based daughter-father team of Melineige and Guy Beauregard, will be back to defend their title this year.
Beach events planned for July and August JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com
Some of the best sand sculpture artists in the world are coming to Parksville this summer — and they have been given more time to craft their works of beach art. The 33rd annual Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition starts with what’s called the “pound-up” on Thursday, July 9 when 15 solo artists and seven doubles teams build and fill their forms. In the past, artists have had 24 hours to complete their sculptures before judging. This year, they will have 30 hours before the judging and awards are handed out Sunday afternoon, July 12. That extra time lines up with the rules at the world championships — the first place solo and doubles team in Parksville will earn a spot in the worlds. “We want it to be the same time frame they will have at the world Thursday, July 9, 2015
championships,” says event manager Trish Smith. “We expect a high quality of sculpture as a result — there’s going to be a lot more detail this year.” Considering the cast of competitors this year who are working with a Heroes and Villains theme, quality is not likely an issue. Five-time solo champion Peter Vogelar from the Slocan Valley community of Winlaw, B.C. is back, but he has entered the doubles competition this year with a partner from his hometown, Denis Kleine. Also returning to Parskville this year is the father-daughter team from Quebec, two-time defending champions, Melineige and Guy Beauregard. Parksville’s team of Mike Rebar and David Kaube will be looking to channel some home-sand advantage. In the solo division, there’s Leonardo Ugolini from Italy. “He’s an amazing sculptor,” said Smith. “I can’t wait to see what he will do in 30 hours.”
Former world champion Damon Langois from Victoria is also part of an impressive lineup of solo artists this year. More than 90,000 people viewed the sculptures last year. The public can watch the carving take place beginning Friday, July 10 at 2 p.m. Judging takes place from 3-5 pm. on Sunday and the winners announced at approximately 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Voting for the People’s Choice Award begins after the judging is completed. The gated exhibition will remain open to the public from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day until Sunday, August 16. Entry to the exhibition is by a suggested donation of $2.50 per person. Proceeds support several local non-profit organizations, with more than $40,000 a year going to these groups. Answers to Frequently Asked Questions Do we use special sand? A – Yes! The regular beach sand can’t be used as it contains bits of shell and pebbles that might create faults in the sculptures. This could shorten the lifespan of the sculpture, or cause it to crumble before it is judged. The Parksville Beach Festival Society purchases fine, silty sand from Ozero Sand and Gravel.
$2,500. Both the winning Double and Solo sculptors automatically advance to the World Championship’s, and if there is room our second and third place winners may also be invited. All sculptors receive $1,000 when they complete their sculpture, even if they
A - Each soloist receives 10 yards of sand on a 12x15’ plot and the doubles get 15 yards and a 20x20 plot. The sculptors can use the sand within the plot and water, nothing more. All of the sand must be utilized in the creation of their artwork. There is no sweeping any leftovers out of the plot or under the mat.
How does someone become a professional sand sculptor? A - It takes passion, drive, skill, a willingness to learn new things, and a little luck! There are competitions all over the world and if you become good enough, you can compete at one of these competitions or get hired to create sand sculptures for a living. The QF Canadian Open is for Master Sand Sculptors only, as the sculptors are hoping for a chance to advance to the World Championships. However, there are other regional competitions that amateurs can attend. Coastal Community Credit Union has sponsored two professional sculptors on July 11/12 who will be teaching the public how to sculpt for free.
What keeps the sculpture together?
How do they build the sculptures so high? A - The sculptors build wooden or plastic forms and stack them on top of each other. They remove the forms and carve from the top down. What do the winners get? A – Cash prizes are awarded to the top 3 Doubles and the top 5 Soloists. The winning Double receives $5,000 and the winning soloist receives Thursday, July 9, 2015
What are the wires sticking out of the tops of the sculptures? A - It is a deterrent from large birds that might otherwise perch on top of the sculptures causing damage. The crows are the worst culprits!
How much sand do the competitors receive?
A - The sand is compressed together in wooden forms to remove most of the air, the less air, the stronger the bond. After the sculptures are completed, they are sprayed with a diluted mixture of 20 percent environmentally-friendly white wood glue and 80 percent water. This forms a protective barrier on the outside of the sculpture that prevents the wind and sun from blowing away the detail, and the birds from damaging the sculptures. The wind screen is not mixed with the sand. It is not intended to hold the sculpture together, only to prevent erosion.
pionships, as the winners of the solo and double competition advance to compete at the World’s. The competitors spend approx. 6 hours on pound up and will have 24 hours to carve over 4 days.
don’t place. There is also prize money for the Double and Solo sculptors, as selected by their peers, and cash prizes for the Double and Solo Sculptors who receive the most votes from the viewers over 5 weeks. In total the Parksville Beach Festival Society gives away $43,000 in cash prizes. All of the competitors have their travel, meals and accommodations paid for by our local sponsors. How long do the competitors have to complete their sculptures? A – This year we increased the competition time to 30 hours to better align our competition with the World Cham-
How long will the sand sculptures last? A - There are many factors that determine the life span of one of these amazing creations. Construction, compaction and the overall design will play a large part, as will Mother Nature. A well thought out design with excellent compaction and construction can last for months even in the harshest of weather conditions. On the other hand a poorly designed or compacted structure or one that has stretched the limits of the sand itself may not survive for more than a few minutes or hours. The Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Exhibition will last for five weeks, until August 16 at 9 pm.

Sculpting competitors come to Parksville Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition event manager Trish Smith said the sculptors love to come to Parksville, not only for the competition and chance at the world championships, but because of the city and the way they’re treated while here. “We take good care of them. We pay for their travel and accommodations, give them a $1000 stipend just to take part, and then there’s the prize money,” she said. The cash prizes total $43,000 - $5000 to the winning double and $2500 to the top individual. The top 3 doubles receive prize money as do the top 5 soloists. There is also a People’s Choice cash award given out at the end of the exhibition for the most votes each Double and Solo receives. The organizers also drive the sculptors around, feed them and leave them with nothing to worry about but their craft. In order to find the sculptors the Parksville Beach Festival sends out an open invitation to anyone who has expressed interest in coming, as well as to all of the sculptors who have participated in past years. They also notify other sand sculpting competition organizers to help spread the word that Parksville is Thursday, July 9, 2015
looking for applicants. “We allow the sculptors six weeks to send in their applications and then select the doubles and soloists based on the cost to bring them here, the quality of their work, the awards they have received, and their references.”
Soloists who will be competing in the 2015 sculptor competition: Abe Waterman, Montague, PEI Abe has been sculpting for 13 years and has won many awards. He loves the camaraderie of hanging out with the other sculptors. He feels the biggest challenge is completing the sculpture in the time allotted but he says the actual carving is easier than you would think. You just have to practice in order to improve. Abe is also a wood carver and a musician, which he couples with sculpting for his primary income. Continued on Page 9

Bruce Phillips, Carlsbad, CA Bruce has been involved in the art of sand sculpting for over 20 years and has worked throughout the world from Tokyo to Amsterdam. He creates amazing works of art at festivals and competitions, and does corporate and private events as well. Bruce has enjoyed watching sand sculpture evolve into a major performing arts attraction, and performance is what he’s all about! In his spare time Bruce builds hotrods and custom cars.
Damon Langlois, Victoria, BC Damon is a Sand Sculptor, Industrial Designer, Dad and Modern Husband who lives in a hobbit home on the west coast of Victoria, BC. He has won numerous accolades in the competitive Sand Sculpture circuit since he began sculpting in 1992. Winning is nice but it’s not what Sand Sculpture is about for him. It’s about performing this extreme art and exploring the world meeting up with this international tribe of sand people.
Bruce Waugh, Langley, BC
Bruce first got involved in sand sculpting when he saw an event in White Rock and thought, “I can do that!” Bruce has now been sculpting sand, snow and pumpkins for over 26 years and still loves it. Bruce has placed in the top five or won the People’s Choice award at the Parksville competition in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Last year he placed 4th at the American Championships and placed 2nd in the Doubles category at the Texas Sand Fest. The most challenging thing he finds is coming up with a fresh idea that no one has seen before, and is difficult to carve. Always pushing the envelope can be frustrating but rewarding after your creation is complete and still standing!
Delayne Corbett, Vancouver, BC Delayne was born in Nelson, BC and began sculpting at the age of nineteen when he was terribly bored. His life changed the instant he picked up a hammer, a screwdriver, and a piece of wood and pounded out an incense holder. A purchase of a small soapstone rock and a few rudimentary tools blossomed into a full time passion. Delayne is now an internationally recognized ice, snow, and sand artist, and often travels abroad to work on large projects. His sculpting career flows in seasons. In the spring and fall his time is consumed by carving stone and working as a stonemason. In winter he carves ice and snow, and the summer he travels around creating sand monuments.
Craig Mutch, Vancouver, BC
Fred Dobbs, Victoria, BC
Craig is an artist who wears many hats - sand sculpture, ice, snow and wood carving, painting as well as professional photography for over twenty five years. Originally an Illustrator and Graphic Designer from Edmonton, Alberta, Craig changed his career goals and set out to the West Coast in search of broader horizons. From there he boarded the cruise ship industry and worked for many years as a lab manager/photographer/artist. He now resides in Vancouver, BC, and travels around the world producing private works for large shopping malls and special event productions.
Fred began sand sculpting at the tender age of 5 on a beach near Dublin, Ireland. Buried waist deep in sand, Fred was to become part of a sand collaboration where he and his Father crafted a convertible sand car. Fred has won titles in Canada, the US Open, and the World Championship. Fred now balances his sand sculpting career with his fine art projects in bronze, public art works, architectural details, and private commissions. His most recent sand sculpting projects have been in Kuwait and South Korea.

Helena Bangert, Amsterdam, the Netherlands Helena studied at the Rietveld Art Academy in Amsterdam and graduated in 1998 with a major in sculpting and installation art. The thought of using sand as a medium came when she was invited to make a sculpture for an exhibition at a retirement home for elderly seamen in a small Dutch coastal village. Gradually sand sculpting has become one of her main activities. She now designs and carves sand sculptures commercially around the world and has also added ice and snow sculpting to her activities.
Kirk Rademaker, Santa Cruz, CA Started carving sand in 1997 on the weekends to relieve tension when he was then working as a project manager for a construction co. Has since worked on the TV show Sandmasters, won the TV event “Sandblasters along with my partner’, worked for Dustin Hoffmann, featured in Jane Pauley’s book and TV series “Your Life Calling”...carved sand all over the world. Sand took Kirk by the scruff of my neck and through me out into the world.
Jeff Strong, Tacoma, Washington Sand sculpting is an avocation for Jeff, whose main profession is computer programming for the University of Puget Sound. He got involved with sand sculpting 15 years ago when he met Master sculptor Bert Adams. After pestering Bert with a million questions, Bert invited Jeff to help him with a sculpture project. Jeff likes the improbable magic of sand sculpture, and his compositions often incorporate open space and emphasize artistic form. Sculpting only on vacation from his full-time computer work, Jeff says that his main challenge is keeping up with the many talented full-time artists on the beach!
Leonardo Ugolini, Predappio, Forli-Cesena, Italy As a child Leonardo spent hours at the seaside intent on building sand sculptures and this passion led him to discover the infinite expressive potential of this fantastic element. Leo has written two books, in 1997 he published a small manual for teens entitled “Create with SAND” and in 2015 the Japanese Sand Museum in Tottori will print Leo’s book about sand architecture. Leo enjoys sand art because it gives him the opportunity to be free and use his imagination without limits, and he gets to live in a community of artists because of it.
Joris Kivits, Waaire, Noord Brabant Photographer? Graphic designer? Art director? Illustrator? Sculptor? Like most sand sculptors, Joris is…first and foremost…an artist. Whatever the medium, whatever the project, he believes that beauty should shine through. This mentality has guided his career in movies and television, in commercials and music videos, and has carried over into his work with sand. Although he has only been sculpting sand since 2006, he’s had several notable competition achievements throughout the world - recently becoming involved in sculpting marble.
Michael Velling, Kirkland, WA Michael makes his living as a dentist but has been carving sand for 26 years and loves engaging the viewer in his sculptures. Sand sculpting has taken him to several countries to sculpt among many gifted sculptors, but he mostly competes closer to home. In 2007 Michael competed in Parksville and placed 3rd with his Kong’s Girl sculpture and also won the competitor’s choice award.

They also added snow and ice to their portfolios and now they carve year-round as doubles all over the world and in every climate.
Edith van de Wetering and Wilfred Stijger, Holland When Edith was two she’d scream when she was told that her family was going to the beach as she hated the feeling of sand between her toes. Kevin Crawford, Austrailia & Sue McGrew, WA Sue McGrew has always been considered a young up and coming sand sculptor, but now she has arrived and is at the top of her profession. Sue has been featured on a television show called “Sand Masters” but retired from stardom to globe trot around the world with her magical bag of tools in search of the perfect grain of sand. Kevin Crawford, a romantic at heart, is just a nomadic sand sculpting gypsy who has been flinging mud since it was first invented in the Cretaceous period by tree dwelling mammals. Marielle Heessels & David Ducharme, Rijen, Noord-Brabant, Holland & Castlegar, BC Marielle was looking for more job opportunities and she found an advert on the Internet where they were looking for sand sculptors. She applied and was invited to participate in a few big projects in the UK and Belgium. She loved it immediately, especially the possibilities to quickly create and communicate her vision on a big scale. David studied clay and stone sculpture in the early 90’s and started sand, snow and ice sculpting in 2003. He co-owns Ephemeral Arts Ltd and he sculpts in his studio and is a carpentry contractor. Mélineige & Guy Beauregard, Québec Some believe sand sculpting is art, some believe it’s a sport, while others, like Mélineige, believe it’s a spiritual experience. Her father and sand sculpting partner is internationally renowned sculptor Guy Beauregard, and like her father, she too has achieved international success. In fact, in 2004 the father-daughter duo teamed to win the World Championships in the doubles category. Since then she has won several individual awards and in 2013 she was the Grand Champion of the first All Woman World Championships of Sand Sculpting in Florida.

Volunteers make sculpting competition go While a lot of work goes into an event the size of Parksville's Annual Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition & Exhibition, event manager Trish Smith says the event always has a lot of support from the community. The Society is greatly appreciative of the significant support received annually from local businesses through cash and in-kind sponsorships, and over 300 volunteers assist with set up and tear down, Lunch with the Castles, Beach Fest special events, selling souvenirs, and greeting visitors at the entrance. Each year non-profit groups can apply to help out at the entrance gate in exchange for a share in the donations collected. Selecting which groups are based on financial need and how they give back to the local community. Last year 16 participating non-profit organizations shared in $40,000 which are expected to provide six volunteers for each of about six shifts and attend a volunteer orientation. This year the public will be greeted
by the following non-profit groups: • Arrowsmith Search & Rescue • Bowser Seniors Housing Society • Errington Therapeutic Riding Assn • Forward House • Fraternal of Eagles • Knights of Columbus • Nanaimo Hospital Foundation • Oceanside Comm Safety Volunteers • Parksville Curling Club • Parksville Lawn Bowling Club • Parksville Lions Club • Parksville Qualicum Elks #589
• Preceptor Delta Zeta • Rotary Club of Parksville AM • Rotary Club of Parksville Noon Hour • Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach Sunrise • Legion Br 211 Bowser Ladies Auxiliary • Legion Br 49 Parksville Ladies Auxiliary • Xi Delta Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi When you see them, please thank them for helping out, for without them, we wouldn’t have a Beach Festival.
Judging the best sand sculptures According to judge Charlie Beaulieu “Judging a sand sculpture is like comparing the beauty of a tulip to a rose, it’s subjective with the elements of technical difficulty and artistic merit”. “Wow Factor” plays a critical role; what’s your first impression, what emotions are stirred in your heart, what’s the impact. The judges look for a wide variety of things when judging the work of the internationally renowned sand sculptors. The key elements are: ar-
tistic merit, creativity, originality, consistency, accurate proportions, illusion of movement, expressive faces and details. Also considered is general balance of the design along with use of sand, and a consistent theme. Sand can fall down so Judges also look at technical difficulty, scrutinizing the use of impossible looking overhangs, cut-throughs, height, hollowing out, arches and delicate narrow elements, along with the sculptor’s general control of the sand. live entertainment and many activities for the whole family. Things kick off at 10 a.m. with live performers running through the day to 3 p.m. www.kidfest.ca. • Quality Foods Children’s Sandcastle Competition Sunday morning registration for the Quality Foods Children’s Sandcastle Competition on the beach starts at 9:30 a.m. and the building starts at exactly 11 a.m. The event is free but children must be registered by 10:30 a.m. The oldest in each group determines the age category (6 & under, 7 to 9 or 10 to 12), with up to four per team. The strict number one rule is listed as “all teams must have fun.” They will have 30 to 90 minutes, depending on age, and there are many great prizes along with goody bags for everyone. • Coastal Community Sculpting Lessons July 11/12 from 11 am–5 pm In addition to the amazing solos and doubles competition, the public will have an opportunity to learn the sand sculpting techniques used by the pros. Coastal Community Credit Union has sponsored two professional sculptors to work with the public and teach them how to create a ‘proper’ sand sculpture from scratch. • Art in the Park July 18/19 from 10 am–4 pm This is a huge outdoor arts and craft fair taking place in the gardens around the tennis courts in the park. Paintings, sculptures, jewelry, pottery, photographs, art cards, beach art, children’s clothing, stained glass and more will be available, as well as entertainment. • Concerts in the park every Fri/Sat night 6:30-8:30 pm starting July 17 The summer concert series will take place on Fri and Sat nights from 6:30-8:30 pm in the Picnic Shelter, with the exception of the Time Benders on August 15, which will take place on the Kite field at 7:30 pm, followed by the fireworks at dusk. There will also be buskers in the Gazebo most Friday-Sunday afternoons.
