Celebrate Canada in Sidney 31st Sidney Days
A
re you ready for a party? This Canada Day you’re in for two days of fun and exciting events at the 31st annual Sidney Days celebration. Be sure to check out the schedule of events on pages 8 and 9 — there are new times and some changes this year. Tuesday, June 30 Celebrations will kick off with the Community Barbecue organized and hosted by Sidney Thrifty Foods from 3 to 6 p.m. The barbecue will be held in Sidney’s Beacon Park. After dinner, the celebrations continue with a group tribute as people sing happy birthday to Canada and enjoy the special Canada Day birthday cake. A troupe of Filipino-Canadian dancers will perform at 6:30 p.m. on stage, prior to the start of the official ceremony. A colour party arrives at around 7:30 p.m. with the big cake cutting at around 8 p.m. During the evening, a citizenship judge will lead the crowd in a re-affirmation of their Canadian citizenship. Pre-fireworks entertainment will be provided by The Craig Henderson Trio at the Beacon Park Pavilion from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. Save your spot early for the Musical Fireworks Extravaganza, presented by the Town of Sidney, on the waterfront at approximately 10 p.m. The fireworks are set to music, so sit back and enjoy.

DISCOVER NORTH SAANICH North Saanich, one of the most beautiful and diverse municipalities in the region, will usually be the first community visitors will experience when visiting. Both main travel entrance points on Southern Vancouver Island, the Swartz Bay Terminal for BC Ferries and the Victoria International Airport, are located here. We welcome visitors and have much to offer them. A significant portion of our land is agricultural with many varied and active farms and other rural attractions. Not only do these offer a supply of locally produced food, but they provide a charming contrast to our residential areas. Energetic volunteers host our well established Saturday morning farm market at St. John’s United Church on West Saanich Road. Many farms offer sales of produce, breads, preservatives and meats at this market and you may even find local jewellery and art. Our annual farm Flavour Trail event will commence Friday, August 22 to Sunday, August 24 offering many opportunities to tour local farm, winery and restaurant venues.

Our walking trails are extensive and appealing, covering most areas in the municipality and ranging from those easily walkable to more challenging areas in Horth Hill Park and Dean Park, well worth the effort for the views. Other parks offer a variety of attractions, including magnificent views of our shores, and our native plants and trees. We have produced a Trails, Parks and Beaches Guide which is available at the Municipal Hall to visitors and residents. In addition to these aspects, our 45 km shoreline extends around the municipality, attracting many boaters and fishing enthusiasts, and serviced by local marinas. The Panorama Recreation Centre offers swimming, tennis, skating and other fitness facilities. There are two local golf courses, Glen Meadows and Ardmore. The opportunity to indulge in such a variety of leisure activities is enhanced in North Saanich by the unspoiled beauty of our rural and marine areas. We hope you have a wonderful experience visiting North Saanich.

A message from the president Peninsula Celebrations Society
I
would like to say a big thank you to Sheilah Fea, for her six years as President. It has been quite a challenge for me this year taking over the Presidency of the Peninsula Celebrations Society — big shoes to fill! However, with the help of a new and very active Board of Directors committed to making all our events as interesting and enjoyable as possible, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. This year we’ve added a children’s component
to our Summer Sounds Concert Series (July 26) and the Old El Paso Train to our list of attractions at Iroquois Park, as well as a refreshment tent. July 1st, Canada Day, will start off with the tradi-
walk to the foot of Beacon Avenue for the very hilarious Build-A-Boat contest — always fun to watch — and cheer on your favourite team to win! Special thanks to Slegg Building Supplies for their 30th year sponsoring this event! The Peninsula is a great place to live, work and play, and we have to be grateful to be a part of it all — a wonderful, caring community! Joanne Olson, President Peninsula Celebrations Society
tional pancake breakfast at the Mary Winspear Centre, served by the Sidney Lions Club, starting at 9:00 a.m. Next comes the fabulous parade starting at 11:30 a.m. People should then make their way down to Iroquois Park for Family Fun Day where there will be cake and fun for all — music by Old Black Rum, human hamster balls, inflatable obstacle course, dog show, train ride, face painting, balloon designer, bouncy castle and hockey games for children of all ages. And to complete the day,

legg Lumber has been providing some of the biggest laughs and best entertainment at Sidney Days for the past 30 years. Watch brave “sailors” paddle their plywood crafts around the buoys off Glass Beach, vying for the title of winner of the Slegg Lumber Build-a-Boat contest: or failing that, come home with the trophy for first to sink. Boats are built of plywood, duct tape and Styrofoam, no power or air tools are allowed, and contestants must even build their own paddles. Make sure you check out the 30th annual Slegg Lumber Build-a-Boat contest on the Sidney waterfront on July 1.
Building starts right after the parade at around 12 noon and runs to 4 p.m. The race starts right after that (be at the waterfront well before the estimated 4:30 p.m. start time for the best spots), all
under the watchful eye of the Saanich Peninsula Coast Guard Auxiliary. The first place team takes home $100 each, second $75 each, third $50 each and trophies are awarded for first

Germs REALLY won’t stand a chance following this campaign pledge! A long-time donor to the Foundation has challenged the community to match a pledge of $900,000 to this year’s OR Sterilization Department campaign, in memory of David Freeze. It was Mr. Freeze’s community challenge in 2006 that helped raise the funds for a new CT Scanner in record time. Make your donation worth double! With this match, every dollar you donate will be worth $2 to the Foundation.
Your donation will help us build a new OR Sterilization Department. SIDNEY DAYS June 26, 2015
