Sunny weather prompts warning about the damage the sun can do to the eyes KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A hot, hot Canada Day

But people found ways to cool down – like these youngsters at the Children’s Festival at the Community Centre – during temperatures of 32 C at its peak during a big day of festivities all over Campbell River and Quadra Island. The day culminated in a full moon overlooking the spectacular Quality Foods Festival of Lights staged in front of Robert Ostler Park Wednesday evening. See page 22 for a selection of photos from Canada Day and go online at campbellrivermirror.com for a more expansive slide show and video of the fireworks.

Cam McDonald lives every day with an irritating reminder of his time spent exposed to the sun. As a youth, McDonald spent most of his time outdoors without wearing eye protection. Though he’s now meticulous about wearing his sunglasses, the damage has already been done. “I lived in Whistler after graduation and I spent a lot of time on the slopes,” McDonald says. “I spent summers at Stuart Island in an open boat and I spent my winters on the slope, so a lot of sun exposure.” McDonald, 55, says by his early 20’s he started to notice his right eye was red and scratchy. He says the spot, which was relatively small and on the corner of the white part of the eye, started to act up this year after he contracted a second eye condition. “I had pink eye and it started to give me blurry vision,” McDonald says. Three months ago he was diagnosed with a pterygium, a growth that develops on the mucous membrane. “I’ve probably had this for about 30 years,” McDonald says. “My eyes are always very sore and red and irritated. I couldn’t wear contacts even if I wanted to.” Dr. Elaine Kerr of FYidoctors, formerly Coastal Eyecare Centres, says with summer now upon us, it’s important for people to protect

their eyes – even on a cloudy day – in order to avoid what McDonald is going through. “The biggest thing I find is I ask people if they’re wearing sunglasses and they say ‘yes’, but when I do a little bit more digging I find they’re only wearing them when they’re driving, but the windshield is designed to protect you from the UV rays,” Kerr says. “It’s when you’re outside, gardening or out on the deck, that wearing sunglasses is so important. Even on a cloudy day, people don’t realize, the UV is bouncing off the clouds, or the water.” Kerr recommends people wear UV A and UV B protective sunglasses when outdoors, particularly between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s UV rays are the strongest. That’s especially important to remember when it comes to children, Kerr says. “They estimate that 50 per cent of the lifetime exposure to UV happens before the age of 18 and that’s because children’s eyes are so clear and the light gets in,” Kerr says. McDonald can testify to that. He says he believes the damage to his eyes occurred during his youth. And since then, it’s only gotten worse. “It’s a scratchy, irritated feeling like there’s dust in it all the time,” McDonald says. “In the last few years, (the pterygiums) have
