Message from Mayor Ron Oszust Congratulations to the GSS Graduating Class of 2015. Graduation is one of those milestones in our lives. It marks the end of an era and the beginning of the next phase of our life. It truly is amazing the friendships and relationships that we establish during our school years. Friendships that will last a life time. The Class of 2015 is very special in this regard. As a group you’ve had to pull together through some very tough times and as a result of this, you know that you can reach out to those around you. You are also a class that has left a lasting memory with all the people that you’ve touched during your years in Golden. On behalf of the Town of Golden – we wish you the best; the best in your endeavors, the best in your trials and tribulations and the best in your pursuit of happiness and being contributing members of society. Golden is home – and we are always here for you.

Message from Norm Macdonald Graduation day is an important step in a young person’s life. There are few times when the opportunities in life are so filled with potential. Graduation day also marks full entry into adulthood with both its responsibilities and its prospects. You have been raised in a safe and healthy community with quality public education and healthcare. Your education has provided you with the ability to think critically and to appreciate what you have. But you will also know that we must always strive to do better. Young minds with fresh ideas have always driven improvements in our communities, and I hope that you will embrace that challenge in the years ahead. Congratulations on your graduation!

Principal’s Message; Grads of 2015 ready for the future Every grad class has unique qualities that makes that group of students stand out from other groups. This year's grad class definitely has a number of these special qualities. When they arrived at GSS, it was noticeable that this was a group that really gelled with each other and got along. They have had their moments, but overall they have stayed united through their high school years. These students had so many great moments throughout their five high school years with the variety of courses they took...Outdoor Education, Photography, PE, Strength, History, English, Sciences, Band, Choir, Calculus, Foods, Shops, Independent Studies, and on the list goes. On the cusp of 21st century learning, these students are excellent examples of students who

CAN think outside of the box, who CAN collaborate and create solutions to questions that don't even exist yet, who CAN inquire about the world and who CAN make this world a better place. I would like to share some words that aptly describe the young people in this grad class... caring, fun, loyal, good sense of humour, talented, outgoing, socially responsible, dependable, and personable. A true sign of character is how you treat others, in particular those students with special needs. This grad class is exemplary in this area, with numerous examples. Supporting a girl to perform at her first Jam Session, playing card games in the forum and introducing a student to new friends while joking around and laughing together, creating trust with a student so that he felt brave enough to go to art class - eventually on his own, making iPad movies together, dancing with a girl at the talent show and getting rejected at the offer of dancing together. This group was able to make each student feel included, worthwhile, special and one of the group. What positive role models these grads are! These grads have come a long way from grade 9 where they made pretzel poetry and tried to read Romeo and Juliet in their best fake British accents in their

DREAM BIG!

Congrats Grads!

English class with Mrs. Schroeder. On the year of her retirement, Mrs. Schroeder will be fondly remembered by many students, and in particular, this year’s grade twelves. This group of grads is ready to head out on their own as they are well equipped with the skills they need to navigate the world. They have spent a lot of time planning their next steps - with Mr. Wilson and the famous Grad Transitions Course, with their parents, and with each other. This is an exciting time for them as they have their whole lives ahead of them... to travel, to study, to try new things, to meet new people, to grow, to learn, to embrace everything they can. I am so pleased that all of our grads worked hard and earned the right to walk across the graduation stage. They can hold their heads high as high school graduation is an amazing accomplishment and one that is celebrated by all of us here in Golden....and others who are in our hearts. On behalf of the staff at Golden Secondary/Golden Alternate, I wish the graduating class of 2015 the very best! Congratulations!!! Mrs. Trask, Principal Golden Secondary/Golden Alternate

Valedictorian’s Message; Remember your roots graduates Good evening everyone, and welcome to the class of 2015’s graduation ceremony. I want to thank every single one of you for making it out this evening. Tonight our grads are surrounded by honoured guests, staff, administration, supportive friends and loving family. And to all of you I would like to give my heartfelt welcome. There are a number of speeches a person can prepare for valedictorian speeches among them. There are also proposals, or public promotions, celebratory speeches, and finally there are these babies… Prime Ministerial nomination announcements. Just saying. I’ve been told I would make a great dictator, and so, as they say, stick to what you’re good at. And so I have this little piece of pie with me every single moment of the day, just in case Canada is ready for the benevolent dictatorship that would be Wesley Routley. I’ve learned a lot about dictatorships over the past ten years, and what it can do for Canada. So all that has to happen is get rid of the old guy in the house already. Alright remember people, plenty of work and general encouragement for compliance if you vote for Wes. Now my fellow graduates, over the course of the past five years here at Golden Secondary, we have learned a lot. Or at least our teachers have tried to give us a bit of knowledge over five years while we talked about the events of the past weekend. It happens. Mrs. Schroeder, our exquisite master of ceremonies, diligently tried to introduce us to those two lusting rebellious teens in Verona. Mr. Wilson officially taught us you can indeed go through nine months worth of history material in just seven

congratulations grads of 2015!

months if you speak quick enough. And several years after teaching us Science 9, the lessons of Mr. Freebairn continue. Although ethers may smell nice, don’t spill them unless you want a full-scale evacuation. And finally, Mrs. Turner also taught us that it isn’t our fault that we do talk about the weekend so much, we just haven’t developed mentally yet. And of course we’ve learned a lot about ourselves and each other. As we progress through the further stages of our lives, we might learn another lesson, that all of what we tuned out was actually important. Somehow, differential calculus, electromagnetism, and even what body part we’re working out will actually be relevant. We’ll also learn that the friendships we have formed during our educational career here will be among the strongest we could ever have. A little anecdote: I joined this grade on the 100th day of kindergarten. I was terrified. I was so terrified. I had no clue what to expect, I was socially inept, didn’t care whatsoever about talking, playing. And I wasn’t going to share my snacks with anyone. There’s no way. The day I stepped through those doors, however, my world changed. I was instantly absorbed into the mix. Others joined us along the way to high school. And they too were welcomed. There weren’t cliques in our grade. Our entire grade was a, to use Mrs. Turner’s terms, a symbiotic unit with individual mechanisms working together. For 13 years, oh my God, 13 years this group of young men and women you see to my right, have built each other up, supported each other, and fought for each other tooth and nail. We succeed together, we work together, we graduate together. And naturally we raised a little bit of hell together

Congratulations to the class of

too. Now, the essence of a valedictory speech, for anyone who didn’t know, is to summarize the amazing talents, skills, and futures of the graduates. And to effectively see them off as well. I can’t do that. This grade is so amazingly diverse that a few words simply couldn’t summate them. We have future nurses, educators, artists, musicians, technicians, doctors, athletes, researchers, engineers, and naturally each and every one of them are natural born leaders and will excel at any cause they put their mind to. I’ve got my guarantee stamp on that. They will all go out into the world and be just as, if not more amazing, than they are now. Now I can’t see you guys off, but I can give you some words of advice. And any future valedictorians are free to credit me on this, just send a cheque. Let not the failures or fears of the past misguide you. Rather maintain your course to excellence, and greet those along that path with the respect and kindness of a fellow champion. Because all nomads on that unknown trail have conquered or will slay the past that pulls them backwards. Go out, seek adventure. Remember your roots graduates. Keep it Golden. Don’t forget to call. And may we all meet again in ten years time. Thank you. — Wesley Routley
