Parksville residents facing vote for $5.5M in borrowing JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com
The federal and provincial governments announced Monday they will contribute $3 million each in taxpayer money to the $24 million plan to upgrade the Englishman River Water Service. Residents of Parksville will be asked in a referendum to support approximately $5.5 million in borrowing for that city’s part of the bill and construction on the river intake — the first step of the process — will likely not start until May or June of next year. “The first phase of this project will provide a safe and adequate supply of water and ensure a high quality of life and economic growth while sustaining a healthy river system and enhancements to the environment,” Parksville Mayor Marc Lefebvre said Monday morning at a city hall news conference. “Through the New Building Canada Plan’s Small Communities Fund, we are investing in priority infrastructure projects that have a positive and lasting impact on the quality of life of British Columbia’s residents while helping create jobs and economic growth,” said John Duncan, Minister of State and MP for Vancouver Island North. “The much-loved Englishmen River flows through the heart and soul of this community and that will continue with the significant design considerations to maintain the joy it brings to residents’ and visitors’ and to protect its aquatic habitat,” said Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell. After some complications, the Qualicum Beach Farmers Market is adding a Wednesday evening market after all, starting July 8. The market will open on School District property after the town’s requirements wouldn’t work for the
market operators. “This was our second choice, but we’re super happy with it, our customers have been asking for it for a long time,” said market manager Mimi Shewchuck. In May, organizers applied to town council to expand from their usual Saturday morning main market on Veterans Way, to add the Wednesday eve-

Living wage here estimated at $17.66/hr
AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
A report by the District 69 Living Wage for Families Coalition (LWC) finds that the wage needed to raise a family in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area has gone up 24 cents to $17.66 an hour. The “living wage” is a calculation of the hourly wage that two working parents with two young children must each earn to meet their basic expenses including rent, child care, food, clothing and transportation, once taxes and subsidies are taken into account. It’s based on a formula created by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, B.C. office, First Call: BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition and the local coalition. “The Oceanside living wage rate only provides for the most basic of a family of four’s expenses,” said Rick Sullivan, LWC secretary. “There is no provision for saving money for the future purchase of a home, or saving for retirement or the children’s education.” “The most important point is the impact a government-sponsored child care program could have,” he said, explaining that especially “small businesses have a lot of valid questions about whose responsibility child care is. I think everyone’s responsible, so a government sponsored plan is the only thing covered by all of society.” Child care and shelter costs are the two biggest drivers of the living wage and account for over 42 per cent of the family’s expenses. “Investing in universal affordable child care would significantly reduce the costs of raising a family and lower the living wage,” Sullivan said. “For example, the proposed $10/day child care plan would reduce the Oceanside living wage by nearly $3 per hour. And a cross-Canada affordable child care system would cost about the same as what the federal government is planning to spend on income splitting and the Universal Child Care Benefit, policies which offer little benefit to low and middle-income families and create no new child care spaces.” Read the full story online at www.pqbnews.com

Adventure from Chile to Alaska CARLI BERRY
news@pqbnews.com
Have you ever felt the desire to travel in a communal van with a bunch of random strangers? That’s what a man who calls himself Ben Jamin is doing with his Hasta Alaska project. “I bought the bus three-and-a-half years ago with the plan to share it with as many people as possible,” Jamin, founder of the project, said. He shares his 23-year-old Volkswagon “Co’Pito” with complete strangers, to allow people to get a taste of the travelling life so the travellers don’t have to spend a fortune, he said. “(It’s) kind of like couch surfing,” Jamin said. Hasta Alaska is a project that Jamin started in 2011. He bought his van in Chile and spent time fixing it up before making his way through South America, Central America and finally North America where he plans to end his journey in Alaska. He’s been filming the journey and posting photos and videos on his website and on YouTube. “I’ve had over a 100 people live with me,” Jamin said. So how did he end up in Qualicum Beach last Wednesday? “I’ve been following his travels since he was in Chile,” Deanna Wyndham, who lives in the Spider Lake area said. She invited Jamin and his crew to visit the area. “It’s only really me and the dog that are going
to Alaska,” Jamin said. The other members of his crew stay for a few hours, to a few months. Jamin is also giving the van away once he reaches Alaska to one of his followers online. He said he has rebuilt the engine 10 times during his journey so he relies on funding from his online followers and advertisements from his website. “This is probably one of the most beautiful offices we’ve had,” Jamin said “You get the opportunity to stop with locals and get to experience places in-between the main tourist attractions.” Jamin also taught himself how to film during the trip. “Part of this trip is basically to learn new skills.” Jamin said he didn’t know how to make videos at first and borrowed equipment from people who came in the van with him. The van has solar panels so Jamin is able to edit his videos on the road. “I’m going to do more adventures, (after this one),” Jamin said. He said he plans to go to remote villages in India and bring cinema to those communities. “(Travelling is) one of those things that you’ll never regret,” he said. He said 25 per cent of the proceeds that Jamin receives he plans to donate to a charity but he hasn’t decided on which one yet. To see his latest adventures: kombilife.com. A colourful fundraiser has pink flamingos flocking to yards in Parksville. The Parents Advisory Council (PAC) of Oceanside Elementary School recently sold flocking tickets with the winners earning the opportunity to secretly flock a yard with thirty pink flamingos. The prank, which has been making lawns in District 69 festive, appears to have taken on a life of its own. PAC spokesperson Colleen Jordan said the birds are becoming popular and the fundraiser has gained interest from the Resort Drive business community. Owners Kristy Andersson and Darcy Stephenson of Ocean Sands Resort woke up to flamingos one morning and have since challenged other resorts to get involved. They donated $500 to the

cause and requested a secret flocking of Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Resort. Tigh-Na-Mara continued the fun and Oceanside Village Resort was the next on the list to be tickled pink. Jordan said Tigh-Na-Mara donated a gift certificate for a one night stay with breakfast which they will use to generate money in a future raffle. She said the flocking is done in good spirit and is not meant to be disruptive in any way and so far the recipients have enjoyed the surprise ar-
rival of the birds. In fact School District 69 superintendent Rollie Koop was the latest recipient to be pleasantly surprised. He arrived home from work to find his yard filled with several plastic flamingos on June 24 and a note thanking him for his support. She said Koop had made a donation to the fundraiser earlier but chose not to nominate anyone to be flocked so the bird squad decided his yard would be targeted. “Everyone has been hav-
ing a hoot with it. It makes people smile and it looks so cute on their lawn. It is really fun,” she said of the fundraiser she initiated. Jordan came up with the idea after searching on the internet for ways to do fundraising a bit differently and she agreed it is certainly creating a buzz and bringing attention to their project. “After a flocking the neighbours will ask whose birthday is it. It gets people talking to each other. Different people have organized people to be nominated and they get to go out and be sneaky.” She said not all of their mischievous high jinks have gone off without a hitch. “A couple of nights I went out I got caught. A dog was barking and another time we waited until the lights were out but we got busted. At one house after we got caught about five minutes later the sprinklers went off.” Money raised from the flocking fundraiser will go toward the first phase of an outdoor learning and play area for Oceanside Elementary School.

Co-housing hits a bump Proponents confident they can resolve issues with town AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
The Aldermuir cohousing proposal for Qualicum Beach suffered a blow, but the proponents say they will proceed. “The odds may be stacked against us, but I think we will persevere,” said Gary Morrison, president and founder of the Vancouver based Livewell Cohousing, which hopes to build Aldermuir at the corner of Laburnum and Claymore Roads. At a town committee-of-the-whole meeting Wednesday, council asked for clarification about required wetland buffer zones on the 8 ha. (20 acres) property where Livewell proposes building a 28 unit strata-titled cohousing community, developing 28 fee-simple single family homes and selling six strata-lots. Working with the local Ballard Homes, Morrison said the plan is to develop a portion of the property to help fund the cohousing project, but the current proposal calls for development within 15 metres of a seasonal wetland. “I think we got a bit more guidance from council and more clarity on the setback issue, which we think we’ve answered and resolved,” he said. “We’ve followed the B.C. Develop with Care Guidelines 2014 to the letter,” Morrison said after the meeting, “as shown in the work, peer reviewed by the town’s own consultants.” Town director of planning confirms the proposal meets two of three conflicting sets of regulations, the provincial care guidelines and riparian regulations, but hasn’t addressed the town’s 2005 official community plan (OCP). The setback issue comes from the building of the Laburnum ring road through the area. According to the staff report, a block of sensitive habitat on both sides of Laburnum, from Claymore Road south, was set aside with 50 to 200-metre development setbacks. The 2005 OCP extended the zone across Claymore to include the property now in question. Read the full story online at www.pqbnews.com

More grant money could flow

“This intake and treatment plant project will allow us to protect and enhance our water while improving fish habitat and domestic water supply,” said Regional District of Nanaimo Chair Joe Stanhope. After the senior government contributions, the $18 million needed to complete the first phase of the upgrades will be split 75-25 by Parksville and the RDN (Nanoose Bay), respectively. It wasn’t too long ago most projects like this were funded in a one-thirdone-third-one third formula, with taxpayer money coming from the federal, provincial and local governments. “We developed a backup plan anticipating that kind of eventuality,” said Lefebvre. “It is what it is.” “The demands across the country for infrastructure renewal are just humongous,” said Duncan. “The federal contribution in 2003 was $571 million across the country, this year it will be $5 billion.”
Duncan also hinted the water project here could see more grant money from the federal government. “There may be future commitments,” he said. “I wouldn’t write it off.”
The demands across the country for infrastructure renewal are just humongous MP JoHn duncAn
“We have to be happy with what we have,” said Stanhope. “But let’s not rule out future grants. We will keep pushing for access to grants.” Lefebvre made note of the current water restrictions in the region and the need both now and in the future for water. It’s been one of the driest years on record in Parksville Qualicum Beach and the forecast is calling for more dry conditions and temperatures hovering around 30 degrees.
“Let’s look at the weather today,” said Lefebvre. “It (the pressure on water systems) is going to increase even as we speak. There are days when I don’t sleep very well.” Stanhope spoke about how the 1999 constriction of the Arrowsmith Dam, the key part of any water system involving the Englishman River, has been a boon to fish stocks by regulating and improving the flow of the river. “In the 1940s when I was a kid, you could walk across the Englishman River in the summer time,” said Stanhope. According to a federal government news release, of the 21 projects approved for funding in British Columbia so far through the federal government’s Small Communities Fund, 11 are drinking water projects, nine are wastewater projects and one is a brownfield remediation project. The release also said additional projects are under review and could also soon be approved.
First Wednesday market at Commons slated for July 8
continued fROm PAGe A1
Coun. Bill Luchtmeijer had said at a council meeting, “I’ve had a number of discussions with merchants downtown and they are almost unanimously against a market on Wednesday nights.” “Businesses are what make our downtown special,” he said, pointing out the town funds the QBDBA “and now we’re going to do something contrary to their wishes.” “I find that awkward at best. Disrespectful of people who pay taxes and business licences in town.” “There are a limited number of vendors, in a sense we’re competing for them,” QBDBA board member in charge of markets Dave Wood previously told The NEWS. “Having a market on another
night could draw away much of our success.” Citing the importance of local food to the health and economy of the region, councillors Barry Avis and Neil Horner proposed a compromise to allow the Wednesday market with several restrictions including only allowing vendors selling “locally grown product that is fresh,” which council passed. “That was just not feasible,” said Shewchuck. “It would only allow four or five of our vendors, which as a non-profit we can’t exclude most of our members.” Shewchuck said they have 90 vendors on Saturdays and will have 30 at the new Wednesday evening market. And so organizers struck a deal with
School District 69 to host the new market on the grounds of Qualicum Commons, the former elementary school site in the middle of town, for which they don’t require town permission. “Optimally we’d like to be where we normally are, which everybody tried really hard for,” Shewchuck said. “We had meetings with the town and QBDBA.” QBDBA president Lilo Kallai said they just found out about the new market through The NEWS and would take some time to sort out the details and have a response. Like the Saturday market, the new market will still focus on farm and food, “make it, bake it, grow it,” Shewchuck said, they just won’t be as restricted as council
required. They will continue to give priority to local vendors, Qualicum Beach first, then the Oceanside region and almost strictly vendors from between Courtenay and Cedar, she said, with some from places like Nanaimo being grandfathered in after 10 years as regulars. “We really like this location, right downtown and close to the residential neighbourhood where people can just walk over,” she said. “We’ll have produce, meat, baking, spices, anything you can eat, and maybe some crafters if there are still spaces.” The Wednesday markets will run 4 p.m.-6:30 p.m. from July 8 to Sept. 26. SKELETON FINDS PERMANENT HOME AT VIU MARINE STATION
Grey whale finds forever home
MARILYN ASSAF VIU Communications Special to The NEWS
The unveiling of a 10-metre long grey whale skeleton at Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) Deep Bay Marine Field Station was an emotional moment for Sharon Cooper of Sc’ianew First Nation. Cooper was out for an evening walk five years ago when she first saw the body of the grey whale washed up at East Sooke Park near Victoria. “I was so sad,” said Cooper. “People had carved their initials into the whale’s body, and huge chunks of blubber were removed. I knew that I had to save this whale. We had to leave a legacy for future generations and make a difference. This is something that I was supposed to do.” On Tuesday night, Cooper’s vision became a reality. She joined more than 160 people — donors and volunteers — who gathered at VIU’s Deep Bay Marine Field Station for the grand unveiling of the Underwater Harvesters Association Grey Whale Exhibit. The whale skeleton hangs from the ceiling as a grand centre piece on the main floor of the Field Station. The unveiling also brought tears to the eyes of dozens of volunteers and donors who helped in time or money to bring the eye-catching educational exhibit to life during the past year. “It’s really spectacular,” said Ken Magnus, a retired radiologist who alone put in more than 700 volunteer hours on the project. “It’s been an absolute pleasure working with the team who put this together. I retired two years ago at age 70 and was rattling around the house. This project filled the gap nicely. It’s been a godsend for me personally.” After Cooper saw the body of the whale lying on the beach, she rallied
support from her partner and a friend, as well as the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and VIU. The whale’s body was towed from the beach to Sc’ianew First Nation land where it was respectfully buried. In 2014, after four years of decomposition, the whale’s bones were exhumed and transported to the Field Station. Field Station Manager Brian Kingzett and VIU’s Advancement & Alumni Relations Office launched a unique “Raise the Whale” online fundraising campaign, and sold more than 160 bones to raise the $70,000 to cover the costs of creating the exhibit.
When you retire, you’re supposed to do something, so we thought ‘why not help build a whale?’ NEALE WORTLEY
Kingzett hired Cetacea Contracting from Saltspring Island, who specialize in large mammal articulation projects. Owners Michi Main and Mike deRoos led a team of volunteers, including VIU students and community members, through the detailed process of cleaning and preparing the bones for the final exhibit. Magnus said his knowledge of bones and anatomy from his long career as a radiologist “came in handy” for researching and identifying bones, bleaching them, and figuring out a way to put some of them back together. There were several other core volunteers, including retired high school carpentry teacher Ross Walton, and Deb and Neale Wortley. The Wortleys, who retired to Qualicum Bay from the Yukon, first heard about the project while enjoying High Tea By the Sea at the Field Station. Not only did they support the project financially by buying the whale’s $5,000 skull, they became avid volunteers. “When you retire, you’re supposed
to do something, so we thought ‘why not help build a whale?’ In the end, it all came together and was a lot of fun,” said Neale. “We met really interesting people by volunteering.” “I did a lot of bone sculpting,” added Deb. “We needed the bones to look as natural as they could. Some pieces had broken or chipped off during the move from Beecher Bay to the Field Station, so we used modeling clay to touch them up. Some days, we spent eight hours working on one small piece of bone.” Stephanie Richards, Facilities Coordinator at the Field Station, said more than 2,000 volunteer hours went into the project. Walton added that volunteering on the whale articulation project filled his days with purpose for a great cause. “I heard about the project after reading an article in the local paper. I’ve been coming here to help out ever since. “My role was to help wash the bones after they were removed from the burial site. I also helped drill holes in the bones to prepare them for the metal framework, which holds them together. The final exhibit is just incredible.” Lead donors included the Underwater Harvesters Association (UHA), which donated $10,000 to the project for the naming rights, and Jamie’s Whaling Station and Adventure Centres of Tofino/Ucluelet, which purchased all 23 bones in the whale’s tale. All donors received a certificate of bone ownership and an invitation to Tuesday’s unveiling ceremony. Cooper added that the project wouldn’t have been possible without the vision, friendship and support of Kingzett, who was unable to attend the unveiling. “He deserves the credit for helping to spearhead the whole project,” said Cooper. The public is invited to visit the Deep Bay Marine Field Station and see the whale exhibit first hand, and take in other activities such as High Tea by the Sea, Music by the Bay concerts and other special events. The Field Station is open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Teddy Bears coming to Nanoose July 12 The teddy bears will be marching once again for the 24th annual Teddy Bear Picnic in Nanoose Bay. On July 12, kids are invited to gather their teddy bears and meet up for an afternoon of face painting, wagon rides, bouncy castles, tattooing and fun with the mascots. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Jack Bagley field and free food and water will be available. A pancake breakfast will be available in the morning from 8 to 10 a.m. “It involves kids getting outside and using their imagination,” said event organizer and
Quality Foods manager Ken Bowerman. He said Safety Bear will be out to play along with Goeffrey the Giraffe, Doughboy, the Quality Foods dog and more. He expects there to be anywhere from 600 to a 1,000 kids this year. Bowerman said they want to be “water smart” this year and will be providing tents and lots of water as the summer is predicted to be a hot one. He said the event has around 15 sponsors, 120 volunteers and it’s the entire community that makes the picnic possible. — NEWS Staff

ou can see the signs on lawns, here and there from Deep Bay through Nanoose Bay. ‘We Vote CBC’ they say. Presumably, the people who present these signs want more tax-dollar support for the public broadcaster, because the last time we checked there are no candidates running in the federal election representing a CBC party. At the very least, perhaps this campaign, if that’s what it is, will put a spotlight on the future of the public broadcaster. Or maybe it’s always in the spotlight, a national obsession that garners passionate debate once in a while, like the re-occurring spectre of Quebec separation. Imagine being the owner of a little TV station in a small or medium-sized Canadian city. Owned by large national company or not, these outlets are asked to sink or swim on their own. Your advertising reps are working hard to bring dollars into the station, money that supports quality programming and feeds the families of the camera operators, onair personnel, clerical staff, ad reps, newsroom staff, etc. The retail outlets your rep visits only have so much money to spend in advertising, ie. a marketing budget. Your rep hears that his/her station will get part of that budget, but some of it will go to the local CBC-TV outlet. Then, later in the day, you sign the cheque going to the Receiver General of Canada, or you pay the GST on something you purchase. Some of that money is going to help subsidize your competition. Is that fair? Absolutely not. It’s time to drastically change the model that is public broadcasting in this country. In the U.S. where the population is 10 times greater than Canada, National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting System also get subsidies from the federal government, but roughly half of the $1 billion the CBC gets in taxpayer money every year in this country. The NPR and PBS — which have great programming, it has to be said — rely heavily on the donations of its listeners and viewers. Cuts to the amount of taxpayer money the CBC receives is not a sole domain of the current government. The Liberals were doing it before the Conservatives. Another advantage of taking the CBC out of the public trough would be the elimination of government, read political, oversight and interference. So, how about a sign that says “We Vote for a CBC that is Self-Sufficient and Free of Political Interference”? — Editorial by John Harding

Will Duncan listen? I see that MP John Duncan is trying to defend the Conservative government’s record in the recent session of Parliament (The NEWS, June 23), but he hasn’t actually answered the important questions for his constituents. Why did he vote to reduce coast guard services, including closing the station at Ucluelet? Why did he vote against an NDP motion to help communities deal with the safety and pollution problems caused by derelict vessels? Why did he vote in favour of the Bill C-51 surveillance law despite widespread objections about its limitations on our rights and freedoms? Let’s remember that as chief whip for the federal government, Duncan not only cast his own vote on these matters, he enforced the vote amongst all the Conservative MPs. Duncan hopes to represent our community after the next federal election. So the real question is: will he ever listen to our concerns before he votes on our behalf? Brian Glennie Parksville
thanks Parksville Have to say thank you to the City of Parksville crews for the Pym Street/Island Highway Canadian flag flower display. Every year it’s a great effort. My favourite was the peacock and happy to know it is displayed at the park. While on the subject of thanks, I must mention the Co-op gas station for cleaning up that (Corfield/Island Highway) corner and MacDonald Realty for doing such a good job on that old building (Island Highway near Finholm). Then, while reading a recent edition of The NEWS, I need to say thank you to letter writer Cathy Edge for telling life truths. Terri elsTon Parksville
ruining Parksville I just have to write this letter because I am upset with the front-page story ‘Flipping in Parksville’ (The NEWS, June 23). I cannot help wonder what has happened to this city. Why does it appear that the City of Parksville only seems interested in getting a tax-based income by issuing development permits left, right and centre? The sale of the property on Jensen Av-

enue from MacLean Homes to Revera, a company that builds “high quality” living for seniors who are obviously in a higher income bracket than many other seniors living in our area, is, in my opinion, like someone trying to pull the wool over the city’s eyes. I am asking if the new owners will have to make a new application to the city for a development permit and submit their plans for this site? Will the city have another Stanford Place, only that it will be built like the towers at The Beach Club? And don’t even get me started about the water shortage around here. I am not against development. I have seen plenty of it in this town in the 25 years I have been here. However, I think the mayor and council should look around and see how many empty storefronts and housing projects that are half done and then left empty. In my opinion, this city has lost the very ambiance that once drew the tourists to our fair town. Even the beautiful beach we once had is now strewn with rocks and gravel and somewhat ruined our seashore. I truly hope the present mayor and council will take note of what is happening here and start to preserve our city by the sea. arlene elPHiCKe Parksville
Pv balance neeDeD Your front-page story (The NEWS, June 23) on the former Oceana property on Jensen Avenue in Parksville has grabbed my attention. The shift in intention that could result in tearing down a brand new housing development to build a totally new development oriented to seniors is obviously newsworthy. But there is another element in the emerging story that merits our attention. If your report is accurate about the intentions of the new owners, Revera, to build what they say is “... a part of our strategy to grow, innovative and lead in the senior living sector…,” the result will lead to a ghettoization of seniors in Parksville; more accurately, the ghettoization of Parksville as a place for seniors. Picture this: on the other side of Jensen Avenue is the worthy Lion’s project for low-income seniors; across the road, the new market-based development that Revera proposes and just over its shoulder, the out-of-small-community-scale warehouse for seniors, Stanford Place.
If this private sector venture is allowed to proceed, Parksville will forever become a sterile way point on the Island, stranded between the nearly endless mall strip of North Nanaimo and Courtenay. Our chance of ever becoming a mixed culture, mixed generation, community of families, entrepreneurs, resorts and young adventurers will be forever blighted by this decaying cell in its very core. Above all, we need to build a balanced, diverse and fun-filled community for all elements of our culture, not just a holding tank for seniors. And I am one of them. JoHn olsen Parksville
shiPbuilDing WOes Back in October 2011, B.C. shipbuilders were chosen for an $8-billion federal contract to design and construct Canadian Navy and Coast Guard vessels, while Nova Scotia shipyards got a contract more than three times that size to build more naval vessels. The premiers concerned were ecstatic when the announcements were made; B.C.’s Christy Clark donned her familiar hard hat and headed to yet another photo-op, declaring how hard her government had worked to get this lucrative contract bringing thousands of new jobs, and entice skilled workers to return home from Alberta’s oil-patch. Nova Scotia’s Darrell Dexter said it was like winning the Olympics every day for the next 30 years. Almost four years later with very little visible progress, federal government documents have now come to light stating the naval shipbuilding program is in jeopardy; doubts are being cast if the two supply vessels will ever be built in Vancouver due to unavailability of appropriate facilities, expertise and a qualified labour force; apparently there are risks with the design and production plans that would make the vessels unaffordable. Looks like yet another military procurement that has proven to be more talk and less action where Ottawa is concerned, and maybe another nail in the Harper Government’s coffin. Yet the Conservative Party touts itself as the only one to trust in the upcoming election, because of its experience and expertise in running the country for the past decade ?

Forest Butts
Spruce Up Your Home This Spring!
A few days ago I walked through the Heritage Forest in Qualicum Beach and was really ticked off with all the fresh cigarette butts on the trails. I picked up about 60 butts from the trail that goes from Sunningdale Road thru to St. Andrews Road. The next morning I picked up another 10 from the same area. What is with these people? A fire in this forest could be devastating and could take out many houses that are close by, including mine. If this continues I will personally pay for some hunting cams which transmit videos directly to me which I will pass on to the town and the idiots will be charged. Anyone that does this is beyond stupid and deserve what they get. Anyone that sees this happen should also report it as well. Sterling Stump Qualicum Beach
our limited water There have been many articles in the last several weeks regarding the necessity for everyone to be conscious of and respectful of the shortage of our water supply. Many notices from municipalities and other authorities have been in daily and other news publications. Yet, there still exists this insane mentality that we will have potable drinkable water forever. Sorry folks, it is not a renewable resource. We are in the midst of all-time records of heat and no rain. Yet, in Parksville, under a level three water conservation, home owners can still wash their cars and boats while they are encouraged to let their lawns go “blonde.” That has the unequivocal support of Mayor Marc Lefebvre, who was quoted in editor John Harding’s editorial in the June 18 edition of The NEWS: “If there was a summer when lawns should go blonde, it’s this summer.” What is even more astonishing is in the same editorial, Coun. Sue Powell admittedly watched her neighbour power wash his driveway for three hours. There is no comment on Powell’s effort to dissuade her neighbour from continuing his irresponsible actions. As an elected officer for the Parksville community, regardless if the bylaw officer is on days off, Powell has the obligation to inform her neighbour that he is in violation of a Parksville bylaw, he should

stop his actions immediately or would be reported by way of formal complaint to the bylaw officer. It is time that municipalities start looking forward on the critical issue of fresh water for the future. As Lefebvre stated: “Lawns don’t exist in nature. They are an invention of man.” Currently, there are new housing developments under construction. New sod and shrubs are being installed and the houses have not been sold. How much water are they going to need to survive? There are great rain water retention systems out there, if we get rain. We have to develop with drought resistant landscapes and eliminate lawns. Golf courses should be paying a premium for water usage. We are in a crisis. Now is the time to plan strategically for the future of our children and grandchildren. Don Snell Parksville
water conditions Thanks letter writer Trevor Wicks (‘Plan for the future of water and work,’ The NEWS, June 23), you hit it on the head. I remember the comments about concerns for water before the building of The Beach Club. The standard pro-vote comment was: “we have lots of water — development should not be concerned with water availability.” That was under a decade ago. We should be very concerned with

available potable water and how it is used. Now we are going to pump water, at considerable cost, into aquifers that have not been proven to me to be secure and then pump it out at considerable cost to again be purified for human consumption. The only place that gravity plays a role in this water cycle is when it runs down the drains. People have to wake up to the fact that water is, and will continue to be, an enormous concern to those that have their eyes open and are aware that water allows us to live. Keep water in the public domain (see French Creek) and ensure that our governments fulfill their mandate by creating rules that will ensure the best chance of having water in the future. To blindly surge ahead under the impression that all is well and we should not negatively affect progress is very short sighted. In 2009, I was visiting Las Vegas and was astounded by the ever growing 5,000-10,000-home subdivisions on the North side, drawing water from Lake Mead to make the desert livable. A levy of $25,000 was added to residential hook-ups to help stem the dwindling water supply. Nothing changed and Lake Mead and all its infrastructure are now in dire straits 15 years later. I hope all council members and members of water boards think further ahead than their own personal term of office. Try to get a grasp on the potential future. BoB tritSchler Parksville

Look for Sandy Herle owner of Close to You Ladie’s Fashion and Lingerie in Parksville and lifestyle coach Louise Otto in the Canada Day parade, July 1. The two will be on the SOS float spreading the word about the important work the Haven Society does. Louise serves on the Haven Society board and Sandy has been supporting the society through fundraisers at her store. Haven provides and maintains a shelter for women and for their children who have been physically, sexually and/or emotionally abused in the central Island region. There is a safe house in Parksville and a transition house in Nanaimo as well as support programs. Anne Taylor, Haven Society Executive Director said many people are still not aware of what they do and why they need to fundraise. “Some people think domestic violence doesn’t happen here. BC housing provides funding but it is less than 50% of our operating budget. We are not anticipating any government increases in the short term so we are looking at ways to engage the community for support.” The Birthday Challenge is the latest initiative to raise funds. People can dedicate a dollar amount (a dollar for every year they have been alive) to the Parksville Haven house. As well Louise is organizing a charity golf event on July 7 at Morningstar Golf Club in support of Haven Society. The ladies there are presenting the Black & White golf and lunch event. There will be teams of two women playing the best ball and some fun contests. Louise said for an extra $25 you can have your own celebrity caddy. “The men have volunteered to caddy. They will give you golf tips and line up your ball. It will be lots of fun,” Louise said. For all the details call Louise at 250-618-1985. The Lighthouse Community Hall in Qualicum Bay has revamped their Second Sunday Market. What started as a flea market is now becoming a venue for quality crafters, artists and farm goods. Market manager Sheena McCorquodale says there are still tables with second hand items, but now there are new vendors with their own creations making it a bit more upscale. There is also a poultry swap in the parking lot. McCorquodale said they serve as many as 300 people at their pancake breakfast. “This number combined with the neighbours who just want to check out the market and enjoy a good cup of coffee, makes for a pretty impressive crowd for our small community.” Entertainment is also part of the event with musician Peter Mason and friends performing throughout the morning. The next market is July 12 from 8 a.m. until noon. Jazz, Tea & Cheesecake promises an afternoon of Dixieland and more, July 19, at Morningstar Farm. It will be the last event that the Desperation Jazz Band with Bill Cave will be performing at. Cave who is a trumpet playing legend is 81 years old and the band is using the occasion to retire. Students under 18 are free. You can purchase tickets at the Morningstar Farm gate store, Mulberry Bush Book Stores and Cranky Dog Music. The $25 price includes tea, cheesecake and wine tasting.
Ali Hope is one of the new faces at the new and improved Second Sunday Market at the Lighthouse Community Hall. She along with other artisans was selling hand made treasures on June 14. The monthly flea market and pancake breakfast has been held on the second Sunday of each month for many years now. Recently the market has undergone a makeover and now more crafters and artisans are participating.
A memorable concert at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre June 19, saw Paul Laine put on an incredible show for his fans and some of his musical mentors. Laine who is the front man for DarkHorse gave a shout out to his childhood friends he grew up with in Qualicum Beach and to his former music teacher Bill Cave. It was Cave (left) who encouraged Laine to pick up the bass guitar a few decades ago when he was just 11.
A fun carnival was held at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre June 20. 12 year old Braedon Doucette was among the many kids who helped the centre mark its 15th anniversary. Fran Carrat at the Parksville Lioness cupcake decorating booth made sure there were plenty of sprinkles and candies to go around. Outside activities included mini golf, a dunk tank, bouncy castle and a giant bubble making station at the SOS booth.
Parksville Pharmasave’s Brianna Wood was busy sorting through the heaps of stuff staff donated for a garage sale the store hosted June 20. $1600 was generated from the sale which will be donated to Variety’s Boat For Hope. The store also held a bake sale through the month of June and sold paper boats in support of Boat for Hope, which helps Variety take more than 900 kids and their families on a high-seas adventure every year.
Liam Clyde of Parksville enjoyed a root beer float in the parking lot at A&W in Parksville, June 19, during the Seaside Cruizers show ’n shine car show. Proceeds from the sale of the drinks were donated to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. A&W’s yearly event Cruisin’ to end MS takes place August 27. $1 from every Teen Burger sold that day will go towards finding a cure for the ailment that affects many Canadians.
Personal image consultant Louise Otto (left) and Sandy Herle owner of Close to You Ladie’s Fashion and Lingerie in Parksville welcomed several women to the store, June 23, to discover how to dress for success. Louise has developed seminars for Holt Renfrew and has been a personal image consultant for public officials, business owners and TV personalities. The wardrobe planning event was a big hit and another one is in the works.

LOCAL BUSINESS PROFILE
Nothing illegal about this kind of skimming It takes the couple about three hours over a four-day period to make a board JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pqbnews.com
Skimboarding is more than just a hobby for Claire and Todd Hartman. It’s the basis for their new business, Sand Dollar Skims. “It’s been our plan for a long time,” said Claire, who was born and raised in the Parksville area. “We just started this spring.” Sure, there isn’t a lack of skimboards in Parksville; head to any department or dollar store in the summer and you’ll find a selection to choose from. But the Hartmans said the big difference between those boards and theirs is quality. Sand Dollar Skims’ products are onehalf inch thick, which is more robust than less-expensive models. This means that they won’t warp and sink like flimsier skimboards sometimes can. “It’s kind of like a crazy carpet verses a sled,” said Claire. However, Claire also said that Sand Dollar Skims isn’t trying to compete with the high-end brands you’d find at a surf shop. These boards are made of foam, designed for doing skateboard like tricks and can cost $180-$500. Instead, the Hartmans are aiming for the middle ground by building boards that are accessible to beginners and of a high enough quality that they can take the rider through several seasons. Their boards sell for around $100 each. It takes the couple around three hours over a four-day period to make a board. First, Todd — who has been making skim boards since he was a teen — makes the skim out of layered mahogany plywood and epoxy. The bottom layer also contains powdered graphite. Todd said his design is more oldschool, with very little concave to make the board perfect for cruising on a flat puddle. He also only makes one size of board, but Claire said everyone, save for very small children, could use them with no issue. “I find they’re very stable,” said Todd. “They’re tried, tested and true.” Once fashioned, Claire takes the skim-

todd, left, and Claire hartman want to bring the love of skimboarding to the masses. the San Pareil couple, who started their business Sand Dollar Skims this spring, build and design their sturdy and accessible boards by hand.
boards into her studio to burn images into the wood. In some cases, she will also add spot colour using a dye made of food colouring and rubbing alcohol. Currently Sand Dollar Skims uses four West Coast and nautical-inspired designs: a humpback whale, a compass, the outline of Vancouver Island and a jelly fish. The company might also expand their options to include sand dollars, mermaids, angler fish and trees in the near future. No matter the image, however, Claire said the design work is getting just as much positive attention as the quality of the board’s build. Some people have purchased Sand Dollar Skim’s products to use solely as artwork. Still, Todd and Claire make their
boards to be used and they hope creating a solid product will entice more people to get into the sport. “It’s a great beach activity,” said Todd, who added that skimboarding was “some of the best exercise” he’s ever had. “You learn about muscles you didn’t even know you have,” agreed Claire. “We have some of the best beaches on the Island,” she added. “Get out, be active.” Currently, the Hartmans sell their boards from their home-based studio in San Pareil and on Facebook. They also regularly attend markets, including Parksville’s Tuesday Summer by the Sea Market on Craig St. and at Parksville Community Park on Canada Day. Claire said she and Todd particularly
like selling at these venues for the opportunity to network and to share skim boarding tips. “We (want) to get rid of frustrations,” said Todd, adding that he hopes giving the advice could entice more people to try and stick with the sport, as well as hurt themselves less. In the future, Claire also said they would like to expand their online operations onto Etsy and that their ideal future would include a pop-up shop in the summer time. Hosting lessons on the local beach is another avenue they are considering. To contact Sand Dollar Skims, e-mail sanddollarskims@outlook.com or find them online at facebook.com/sanddollarskims.

IT’s BEACH DAY ON sUNDAY IN QUALICUM BEACH
Celebrating the waterfront CARLI BERRY
Life is all about the shoreline if you live in Qualicum Beach and this summer locals and Islanders will be celebrating their waterfront once again with Qualicum Beach Day. The day will start with a Shriners pancake breakfast near the visitor centre at 9 a.m. before moving into a variety of fun and educational activities at noon. Tom Whitfield, media coordinator for the event, said that Beach Day “started with a small group thinking Qualicum Beach has young families, kids and grandparents who could all benefit from the event.” The coordinators wanted to create an event for all different ages of people, Whitfield said. Whitfield said Beach Day is a fun event that gives everyone a chance to participate. This year the events include a hands-on touch tank, sandcastle building, Qualicum Beach Fire and Rescue, beach art with clowns, a vintage fashion show, the Rainbow Stew Cloggers, stage performances from local musicians and much more. once again be netting sea critters for the children to examine Whitfield said. Whitfield said each year he expects between 2,000 to 3,000 people to show up, some local, while others come from all over the Island. “It’s all about the low tide,” Whitfield said. Beach Day has to be planned according to the tides, Whitfield said, and this year’s convenient low tide
landed on July 5. “It was either that or in August,” Whitfield said. The town of Qualicum Beach, community businesses and volunteers contribute towards the event. Whitfield said the event costs approximately $4,500 each year. Shuttles will be available from the downtown parkade to the waterfront. The event activities run from noon to 5 p.m.

Hours of fun at the community park
Canada Day parade will start at 10 a.m. Jessica skelton reporter@pqbnews.com
Boredom shouldn’t be an issue this Canada Day. For those celebrating July 1 in Parksville, there will be a little something for everyone. Starting off the day will be a pancake breakfast hosted by the Shriners in the Coastal Community Credit Union parking lot, located at 140 Alberni Hwy. The Canada Day parade will then kick off at 10 a.m. The floats will travel from Shelly Road in east Parksville, along the Island Hwy and up Craig St. to the Parksville Civic and Technology Centre. The annual celebrations in Parksville Community Park will open with a ceremony on the mainstage at noon, said one of the day’s organizers Bonnie Wallis. The opening ceremonies will include some words from Michelle Stilwell, MLA; Parksville mayor Marc Lefebvre and Robin Shaw of the Parksville Chamber of Commerce. At that point, the vendors set up in the park will be open for business un-
til around 9 p.m. Alongside the shopping, community organizations such as Oceanside Youth Football and the RDN’s Team Watersmart will also be represented. For kids, there will be plenty of opportunities to be active. Wallis said one section of the park will have an obstacle course, a “Euro bungy unit,” a wrecking ball, Zorb balls and a bounce-a-rama with slide. These activities are pay-peruse. The Chamber of Commerce is also sponsoring a second set of bouncy toys, which includes two bounce-a-rama areas, a balloon typhoon and and double hoop basketball. With the purchase of a $5 wristband, children can participate “as many times as they want,” she said. When you get hungry, Wallis said there will be a collection of food trucks parked near the festivities. Expect to see gourmet burgers, fries, sliders, wraps, coffee, desserts, salads, pizza and much more. Also, be sure to put your eyes to the skies just after lunch time. A parachute jumper from Skydive Vancouver Island in Qualicum Beach is scheduled to land on the park’s volleyball courts around 12:20 p.m. See many, page a29

Like the roses in her work, Teresa Knight works seasonally. She only paints florals once a year and the remaining months are filled with other subject threads.
Teresa Knight paints in cycles. Instead of focusing on a sole subject throughout the year, the acrylic and oil artist puts her brush to several of them — often returning to the same few threads for decades. “It’s all over the map,” she said. Her current exhibit at the Galley @ Qualicum Art Supply, however, only showcases two of those series. The first, and most obvious, is florals. Knight said that she only
paints these colourful images once a year in the spring when roses and peonies start to bloom. “They’re a symbol of spring,” she said of the latter. “When I was a kid I just thought they were the most beautiful thing in the world.” For the past 20 years, the painter said she has attempted to capture the essence of these flowers: the beauty, the smell and the feeling of summer. “I don’t feel I’ve gotten there yet,” she said, adding that she doesn’t plan on stopping until she does.
Alongside the peonies and roses, Knight’s exhibition includes a few of her landscapes. “I try to paint the feeling that I get at that time and place,” she said. The images are mostly of places the artist is familiar with, which these days is often around her home in Union Bay. The landscapes are also usually set at twilight or at night. Knight said that she finds the light at high noon too harsh, and instead prefers the “magic” and “mystery” of the evening. “Everything turns around,” she said. REGGAE BAND HERE FOR CANADA DAY: Canadian reggae band Tasman Jude have been busy touring the Island the last couple weeks, including an all-ages show in Qualicum Beach (pictured here) and a performance in Nanaimo. The band will next stop in Parksville tomorrow night for the Canada Day celebrations. Their set, which is the second to last of the night, starts at 8 p.m.
Summer classes for kids at TOSH
Fill your child’s summer break with creativity and imagination this year. Starting this week, The Old School House Arts Centre in Qualicum Beach is hosting a number of week-long arts packages. Youth have the choice to sign up for just the morning or the afternoon, or both for a full-day experience. First, Jay Doige is first teaching a theatre class based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream from June 29 - July 3. Students will learn a role, paint the set, wear a costume and perform the play for parents and friends at the end of the week. And while Shakespeare might sound a bit intimidating for children, this version isn’t. Doige, who has taught acting workshops at TOSH for 10 years, specifically adapted the play so children could easily get involved and use their imagination. Doige will then return to TOSH from July 27-31 to teach a theatre class based on Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Again, each child will work on a part suited to his/her age and will have the chance to make the set. Both of these acting classes are suited for children aged 6-12.
If art is more your child’s style, there will also be several fine arts classes throughout the summer. Janice Erwin will teach her classes to youth aged 6-12 on July 6-10 and August 3-7. The morning sessions in both weeks will focus on drawing and all the possibilities that pencil and paper can bring, while the afternoon sessions will present a world of art in all its colourful glory. Students will be introduced to some of the art world’s Great Masters while learning basic art techniques. Also, each day will bring a new project that allows the kids to explore the fascinating world of creativity while developing their own artistic skills. Lynn Pecknold, who graduated in children’s art education from the Pratt Institute in New York, will teach July 13-17 and Aug 17-21. In her classes, students will discover various aspects of art through having fun with lines and shapes. In the morning, students will focus on drawing. They will explore principles of visual and applied arts, cover lines and aspects of drawing hands, figures and animals, as well as learn about the work of important artists related to drawing. In the after-
noon classes, students will explore design by having fun with lines, shapes, and ideas related to their own lives. Pecknold’s classes are suitable for children aged 8-14. Finally, Valerie Bonsard will teach youth aged 6-12 from Aug 10-14. Throughout the week in the mornings, students will learn how to make a personal collage about who they are. In the afternoons, they will have fun with papier mâché. The students will learn sculpture by starting with items that represent themselves and develop their art around that. All of the classes, which have a small size limit, focus on fun and learning; so, there’s no pressure. All morning classes run from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the afternoons run from 1-3:30 p.m. The week-long classes are $65 for a half day and $130 for a full day. The cost includes all supplies. Children who stay all day should bring a lunch, which they will eat with their teachers outside in the playground. Please visit theoldschoolhouse.org for more information and call 250752-6133 to register. —NEWS Staff/TOSH

While you’re taking in the sights, be sure to head back to the mainstage throughout the day to take in the musical entertainment. There are nine bands set to play, with genres ranging from folk and country to arena rock and reggae, said organizer Megan Olsen. New talent Alex Wicket will kick things off from 12:30-1 p.m., followed by Tora Leigh from 1:15-2 p.m. and Mike Tompkins from 2:15-3 p.m.
Long-time local performers Bev Finch and the Baseman will then play from 3:15-4 p.m. From 4:15-5 p.m., Nanaimo contemporary country band The Boot Hill Boys will take the stage. They will then be followed by bluesy rock locals Counting Time from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and classic arena rock cover band Turn it up to 11 from 6:45-7:45 p.m. Finally, reggae group Tasman Jude will play from 8-8:45 p.m. and Canadian band The Odds will headline start-
ing at 9 p.m. This last group will run until just before 10 p.m. Then, of course, there will be a fireworks display at Parksville beach to cap off the night. Sponsored by Thrifty Foods, the fireworks will start around 10 p.m. or “whenever it’s dark enough to get the full effect,” said Wallis. If you’d like to get really involved for the day, Wallis also said organizers are still in definite need of volunteers. To help out, call volunteer coordinator Beth Ross at 250-228-2384.
Artist has 30 years’ teaching experience CONtiNuED from PAge A28
Not in the show are Knight’s two other regular series. The first is an abstract concept that explores the souls of animals. The second is a collection of scenes featuring people, a subject she first started to tackle with portraiture while living in Toronto.
If you’d like to see more of Knight’s work, you can visit her studio workshop on Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4 p.m. For the address, call her at 250-335-3234 ahead of time. Knight also regularly hosts art workshops out of her studio. With 30 years experience teaching in schools and to adults at spaces like The Old
School House Arts Centre in Qualicum Beach, the painter has plenty of experience to pass on. “I really enjoy teaching,” she said, adding that she really strives to make art accessible to everyone. “It’s like giving people joy.” To learn more about the artist or her classes, visit teresaknight.com.

Sadly the family announce the passing of Harold on Tuesday, June 2, 2015. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Agnes. He leaves behind to mourn his passing sons, Edward McColm of Victoria, David (Sandy) of Langley; daughter, Sharon (Ron) Harris of Osoyoos; 9 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren. Harold served with the RCAF during WWII and had many varied careers during his life. He worked for Spear & Jackson and Henry Disston & Sons as saw maker/filer, the Vancouver Fire Department as a first responder and later in the capacity as an Inspector/ Investigator. Harold loved the outdoors and spent many happy hours fishing, golfing and gardening when he was not indulging in his passion for travel. He was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Knights of Columbus. A Funeral Mass was held in his honour on Wednesday, June 10th at the Church of the Ascension in Parksville. DINO JOSEPH GRIGOLETTO July 23, 1933 – June 21, 2015
H. Lyell Rodger
June 10, 1927 - June 22, 2015 Lyell was born in Quill Lake, Sask. to Bertha and Harry Rodger. In 1937, Lyell, his 3 brothers, and his parents packed up all their belongings and moved to “the land of milk and honey aka the Cowichan Valley. His lifelong obsession with learning had its roots in Duncan Elementary, Bench Elementary, Cobble Hill High School before moving to Victoria College (at Craigdarroch Castle in 1945/46), Victoria Normal School in 1953/54 (now Camosun College), and eventually U.B.C. where he graduated with a BA in Education in 1960. His first teaching position was at Fairbridge Elementary where his young family was housed in the former dormitories of the Prince of Wales Fairbridge Farm School. Lyell’s career spanned 33 years and took him from teaching positions at George E. Bonner Secondary and Cowichan High School to administrative positions at Central Elementary and Bert Bowes Secondary in Ft. St. John and ultimately to Prince George where he was Principal at Duchess Park Secondary for 9 years before retiring after 16 years as Principal of Prince George Senior Secondary in 1987. Aside from learning, Lyell’s other passion was sports. He played semi pro baseball in the early 50’s, raised and showed quarter horses in Prince George, and avidly played golf his entire life. Retirement brought Lyell and his second wife, Hope Campbell Robinson back to Vancouver Island in 1993 settling in Parksville’s Morningstar Golf development. Until the end of his life Lyell lived each moment to its fullest and although his body failed him his mind was ever curious. Lyell was predeceased by his first wife Margaret in 2012 and his second wife Hope in 2013. Carrying his memory forward are his daughter Patricia Hill (Byron), son Laurie (Barb), son Kevin (Kim), step-son Ian Robinson (Margie), step-son Glen, 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law Alice Rodger and Joyce Rodger, numerous friends, and legions of students he helped guide through their educational lives. Online condolences may be made at www.hwwallacecbc.com
On Sunday, June 21, 2015, surrounded by his loving family, Dino said his final goodbye. Dino was born in 1933 in Trail, BC but spent most of his years in Port Alberni raising his family. He retired from the Alberni Plywood Plant in 1991 and moved to Qualicum Beach to enjoy his retirement. Dino loved fishing, camping, golfing, and cheering on his Boston Bruins and, more recently, the Vancouver Canucks. Time spent with family and friends was always very special to him. He leaves his loving wife of 58 years, Edna; daughter, Lisa; sons, David and Neil (Tiana); his beloved grandchildren, Breanne, Jason, Dezi, and Rio; sister, Gina; brother, Angelo (Cathy) and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dino was predeceased by his parents, Maria and Giuseppe; brother, Joseph and sister, Elda. A special thank you to friends and family who came by faithfully and brought sunshine to his days and to the 5th floor staff at NRGH, and the staff at Arrowsmith Lodge for their gentle caring. A Celebration of Dino’s Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, July 6th at Yates Funeral Chapel, 1000 Allsbrook Road in Parksville, BC. In lieu of flowers, please consider honouring Dino by making a donation in his memory to the Alzheimer Society of BC, 300 – 828 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5Z 1E2. No new dawning day nor bright sunny skies, Can match your brilliance or sparkling blue eyes, Â I long to hear your cheerful voice, your music playing loud, I see your curly mop of hair on a tall boy in a crowd. I want to call your name and see you turn and grin, My heart, it leaps and then comes down to realize my whim. Â Â Â Sweet memories of you Ian, we see them everywhere, Still as the years go fleeting past we miss your vibrant flare. LEGALS

Short-bench Royals struggle in heat
Between grad and heat, local baseball team wins one of four on mainland weekend T yson Taylor
sports@pqbnews.com
The Quality Foods Parksville Royals had a much smaller roster and were in tough this past weekend on the mainland taking on the Abbotsford Cardinals and Langley Blaze. With their senior players attending graduation ceremonies, the Royals were left short handed for their four weekend games, coming away with a 2-0 win over the Abbotsford Cardinals while dropping the three remaining games. Pitcher Owen Kelly went the distance in the Royals victory, throwing seven innings of shutout baseball, striking out four batters while giving up just six hits in the game. Third baseman Liam Janzen, from Courtenay, drove in the two runs. “We had a good weekend,” head coach Dave Wallace said. “Considering how short handed we were, I thought the boys handled it very well. They got to play lots of baseball over the weekend and they kept it competitive in three out of our four games. That last game, you could see the fatigue really setting in. It’s tough being short handed, add in how hot it was and it made it that much more difficult. But I

thought they handled it all very well.” The Royals now sit with a record of 7-25 and will have to win their share of remaining games in the season if they hope to crack the playoffs. With just 12 games left on the schedule, it’s crunch time for the
Royals. “We’ve got to win, plain and simple,” Wallace said. “We’ve been close in lots of games this year and we just need to take it to that next level. We need to be the ones that come out of those close games with
the wins, not the other teams. If we can scrape together some wins coupled with losses for the teams ahead of us, we can still move up in the standings. A five game swing will take us from sitting at the bottom of the league to being in eighth place. I don’t think it’s a stretch but we’re going to have to work hard to make it happen.” Canada Day will see the Royals back in action at home in Parksville as they’ll play host to the second place Victoria Eagles. It’s going to be another tough test, as Victoria comes in winners of their last two games and has a record of 25-12 on the season. The Royals have their work cut out for them but coach Wallace feels his team can make a game out of it. “They’re a good team,” Wallace said. “They’ve won 25 games so far this season and they’ve been the team on the other end of those close games we’ve been talking about. If we can start off on the right foot against a team like the Eagles, that will go a long way in giving us a shot of confidence that we could really use.” Game one is slated to start at noon on Canada Day (Wednesday) while game two is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start time at Inouye-Wallace Field at Springwood Park.
JUNIOR hOCkey
Former Gen Brodie Smith aiming high in BCHL T yson Taylor
sports@pqbnews.com
It was a bit of a rough first season for Parksville’s Brodie Smith in the B.C. Hockey League (BCHL). The former Oceanside General standout learned a lot in his first full season and is coming into his second season with the Cowichan Valley Capitals looking to prove himself. It was a tough season all around for the Capitals as they
finished in last place in the BCHL’s Island Division but for Smith, fresh off his Ballenas Secondary graduation, it was all part of an ongoing learning process. “The first season was bumpy,” Smith said. “I just played through it all, as a rookie, learned a lot of things along the way. I think one of the biggest adjustments for me was just the time to make decisions on the ice. It’s a quick-
er game than it was at the junior B level so I know what to expect next season.” Smith did manage to put up 11 points in 46 games, scoring five goals and six assists, as well as 29 minutes in penalties. Now graduated, he can turn his focus to hockey. “It was tough at times,” Smith said. “Having to balance school and hockey got to be hard a cou-
ple times last year but I was able to make it happen. It’s definitely going to be a lot different just being able to completely focus on playing hockey and I’m going to do everything that I can to make the most of it.” Smith likes that the BCHL often sends players on to the university level. “I’d like that for sure,” he said. “It all comes with getting better
as a player on the ice. If I can show the kind of player that I am, hopefully I can turn that in to an offer to go and play somewhere. That’s the goal though; I’d like to make that happen. During his season with the Generals (2013-14), Smith put up 30 points in 43 games (12 goals and 18 assists) to go along with 47 penalty minutes. See LEan on, page A37

Pubs and drinking establishments JILL DAVIES NEWS Contributor
Wherever there is a church, a drinking establishment can almost always be found near by. Historically, when a town depended on tradespeople and artisans to establish a thriving community, there was also a need for a staging post with rooms to house, feed and quench the thirst of working people. Records show that the first hostelry in Oceanside was an inn on the road between Nanaimo and Nanoose. Built by John A Thompson and known as The Arlington Hotel, he advertised the grand opening in December 1894 thus: “Mr. J.A. Thompson, Carpenter, has recently completed the erection of the Arlington Hotel, begun in 1893. He is now prepared to receive and comfortably entertain tourists, travellers and others. The table is supplied with all the delicacies of the season. Mrs Thompson will be in charge of all the rooms tastefully and comfortably furnished and under her personal supervision. The New Year’s Eve will be celebrated by a Grand Ball, December 31st 1894.” It was at The Arlington that the stagecoach stopped on its way North on a Friday and again as it headed South the following Monday. Not only was the hotel a staging post for the mail, it was also where local people came to worship, get wed, enjoy a gala event and even meet for a funeral. Just a year later, John and Annie Hirst started building The Rod & Gun. Sadly John died just before the official opening. Ann, now the mother of six children, went on to run the hotel after it opened in 1898. According to her son Tommy, Bed, Breakfast and Dinner then cost just $1.50. The Rod & Gun quickly became a fixture for local and visiting hunters and fishermen in the area who often using the front porch to string up the catch of the day before retiring for a meal and a drink. Today, though just a pub, it stands on the aptly named Hirst Avenue where the large fish sign on the roof still can still be seen. In Qualicum, the longest serving hostelry, and the oldest business in town, recently celebrated its 90th birthday. The Shady Rest was built by Thomas Kinkade Jr. back in 1924. With the renowned Kinkade hospitality and its spectacular views over the beach and bay, The Shady went on to prosper in the growing village of Qualicum. Back in the 30’s the Bowser Hotel had a

quite different claim to fame. The hotel’s owners, ‘Cappy’ and Florence Winfield employed a legendary barman. It was their dog, a sheepdog/terrier cross known as ‘Mike the Dog’. The story tells that when a customer asked for a beer, Cappy would say ‘Okay Mike’. At this Mike would leave his seat behind the counter and deliver a bottle of beer to the customer. Climbing onto the patron’s knee or empty chair he would gently set the bottle on the table. He would then take the payment to the bar, drop the money into the correct compartment of the till and return to the customer with a bottle opener and the change. He would also run errands, taking a note to the store, returning with the required items. At closing time, when Cappy called “Go shut the door Mike’ he would slam shut the pub door. Mike’s fame eventually spread far and wide. Articles about Mike appeared in The New York Sun and Life Magazine and his story told in Ripley’s ‘Believe it or Not’. Mike served the Bowser Hotel faithfully for eight years before being hit by a car on the highway in 1941. In 1969 the ho-
tel burned to the ground, however, the legend of Mike the Dog lives on. Close to the highway, by the Visitor Centre you will find the Craig Heritage Museum now known as Parksville Museum & Archives. This living museum is home to historic buildings from Parkville’s early days together with a host of artefacts and archives. These reflect the daily lives of the Oceanside settlers. Among the archives you will find photographs of the hotels, inns and the pioneers who established them for generations to come. There too you will also be able to read about Bowser Mike. So why not spend a day in the past at Parksville Museum? Explore the pioneer buildings, check out the artifacts and delve into the archives. As Grandma and Grandpa wander around exclaiming “I remember this”, the next generation and their children will marvel at how the past has shaped the way we live today. Lean on Smith continued from Page a35
Also in that season, Smith played as an affiliate with the Capitals for 10 games, notching a pair of assists and two minutes in penalties. Smith is no stranger to the physical aspects of the game but is also known for his knack for putting pucks in the net and setting up teammates as well, which he’ll aspire to this season. “I’m feeling pretty good heading towards this upcoming season,” Smith said. “I hope to be able to be a guy that the first year players can lean on both on and off the ice. It was nice having that in my first season and I’m hoping to do the same for guys in their first season too.”
