HIGH-PROFILE DEVELOPMENT
Flipping in Parksville Land beside city hall now has new owners, new plan JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com
Build it and they will . . . tear it down? The high-profile downtown land beside city hall and the conference centre on Jensen Avenue in Parksville has been sold and the new owner has applied for a demolition permit to rip down the structure built by the previous owners just months ago. A Mississauga, Ont.-based company called Revera has purchased the property from MacLean Homes, which said in January it was planning to build 62 so-called patio homes on the six-acre parcel. Calling the development Oceana, MacLean Homes started work and built one structure, which sits unfinished on the site. The city has confirmed Revera — which calls itself a leading provider, owner and investor in senior living — has applied for a demolition permit to tear that structure down. “We are excited to have purchased the former Oceana property in Parksville, as part of our strategy to grow, innovate and lead in the senior living sector,” said Alison Steeves, Revera’s director of external communications. “While it is very early days, we know that our development will provide residents in the Parksville area with high-quality senior living choices, and we expect it will also mean job creation during construction and after the opening.” Steeves did not elaborate on what Revera plans to build on the site. “As with all of our new projects, we will be bringing the latest, innovative design in senior living to this development,” she said. “We believe this site is a unique and special place, and we are committed to creating an innovative development that will enhance the neighborhood.” See COMPANY, page A6

FEDERAL ELECTION
NDP firing shots across MP’s bow JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com
Local NDP candidate Gord Johns says MP John Duncan owes an explanation to constituents for acting on behalf of the prime minister instead of the people of Vancouver Island during the parliamentary session that just ended. If voting history in this region mat-
ters, Duncan and Johns will be the frontrunners in the federal election scheduled for October. They will be contesting the new Courtenay-Alberni riding, which includes Parksville Qualicum Beach. Other declared candidates include Carrie Powell-Davidson (Liberal) and Glenn Sollitt (Green).

Wildfire west of Nanaimo human caused
The Wildfire Management Branch responded on Saturday to a four-hectare wildfire west of Nanaimo. Thirteen firefighters, two helicopters, and air tankers were working on the fire, which had grown quickly in felled and bucked timber on private forestry land. Waterskimming aircraft are also working on this fire, and recreational boaters were requested to avoid pickup locations to allow the aircraft to complete their work safely. No structures or homes were threatened. The area is experiencing warm temperatures and steady wind, in an area of high fire danger rating. The fire is human-caused, and under investigation to determine the specific cause. The public is reminded that all open fires, except campfires, are prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdictional area, with the exception of the Fog Zone. Campfires that are small (0.5 metres tall by 0.5 metres wide and smaller) on mineral soil with a fuel break and attended at all times are permitted. Campfires must be fully extinguished, cold to the touch, before leaving the campsite. The public is also cautioned to be careful with any activity that could lead to a forest fire. Cigarettes should be extinguished carefully in water, and vehicles should avoid parking or driving through tall weeds and grasses. Long range weather forecasts are predicting a return to warm and dry conditions next week. Adults aren’t the only ones who are contributing ideas on what to do with Qualicum Beach’s old fire hall. The students of the Collaborative Education Alternative Program held an election and gave their ideas to Mayor Teunis Westbroek. Thirty-two students and family members voted, and the winning idea — a movie theatre/ cafe/bookstore was presented to Westbroek on Thursday. The students said they were excited to participate after receiving a tour of the old fire hall from Town Planner Luke Sales and Fire Chief Darryl Kohse. Shannon Cowan, co-ordinator of the election and a parent, brought the idea of holding an election to CEAP as she noticed civic responsibilities was part of the curriculum. She even managed to get official ballot boxes and polling stations for the students so they could mimic a real election. “It gave the kids a sense of how it works,” Cowan said. The students met for five weeks and and narrowed their 150 ideas to five through a ‘dotmocracy’, a type of democracy where one places ideas being voted upon on a wall and votes are cast by placing dots next to the ideas. From there, the Grade 4-7 students held an

election to choose a winner from three ideas: a gaming station where video games could be sold and played; an outdoor activity eco-friendly park which would engage adults and children and encourage exercise; and the movie theatre/ cafe/bookstore, which would provide the children with a place to relax and watch movies opposed to traveling to Nanaimo to see a film. “As a parent I think it’s an important way to contribute to democracy,” Cowan said. “I came from a family where people vote.” Westbroek said it is important to get youth engaged in politics at a young age. “I want them to get used to the idea of being in rooms and with people who make decisions for them, that they are heard and that their views and their ideas are part of the consideration for whatever decision we’re going to make,” Westbroek said. “They need to know that we listened.” Westbroek said children often give good ideas. “They will make just as good a decision as anyone else in town,” he said. Teachers Lesley LaCouvee and Kate Ridyard said a majority of the effort made was by the students. “They’re our future and one of the things we strive to do is make learning really authentic,” LaCouvee said. “I think that’s what makes it memorable for them,” said Ridyard.

Company has 500 locations continued from page a1
Founded in 1961, Revera oversees the second-largest network of accommodation, care and services for seniors in North America, serving older adults at more than 500 locations in Canada and the United States, according to its website. “We are committed to helping people live life to the fullest by providing senior’ apartments, independent living, assisted living, memory care, longterm care and skilled nursing,” said the website. Parksville city council originally ap-
proved a development permit for the site in December of 2010. It was renewed in January of 2013 and was set to expire in January of this year, just before the excavators started moving on the site. Coun. Al Greir voted against renewing the company’s development permit two years ago. He said in January he was still not happy with MacLean Homes’ plan for the site and he noted how close the company came to having its development permit expire. “They were on the last day of their

“On almost every front he acted on behalf of Stephen Harper instead of our communities.” Duncan disputed Johns’ claims, especially when it came to the ferry service. “That (Johns comment) is not correct in any way, shape or form,” Duncan said Monday from Ottawa. “The only ongoing subsidy (in the entire country) for a ferry service that operates within one province is for BC Ferries ($29 million annually),” said Duncan. The MP, who is also the government whip, said recent sessions of parliament have been very productive.
“In this parliament we have passed 120 bills, which is a record,” said Duncan, who said he will be flying out of Ottawa today (Tuesday) and making announcements in this riding this week. He said this parliament has also passed a record 40 private members bills. Duncan also pointed to a long list of bills the government has passed into law during this parliament, including one that forces all MPs to disclose their spending on a quarterly basis and others that will be of benefit for this province, which he said has the lowest amount of trade with the U.S., and the highest with Asian countries, of any other province.
“We put in place the Canada-Korea free trade agreement, which is important for B.C.,” said Duncan. The NDP candidate Johns said “people in our community were very disappointed by the Stephen Harper Conservatives in this last session.” He also said it was a good session for his party leader, Tom Mulcair and the NDP. “New Democrats defended the rights and freedoms of Canadians by leading the fight against Bill C-51,” he said. “And they got things done on protecting the environment and making life more affordable for middle class families.”

That would have been ideal.”

FUNDRAISING EVENT THIS WEEKEND
Aimee needs community’s help Burgers, baked goods and beverages at Joe Cunningham Ford Thursday through Saturday
Help raise crucial funds this weekend for 25-year-old Aimee Pope’s battle with cancer. Pope attended Parksville Elementary, Springwood Middle and Ballenas High Schools, and has worked in Parksville since graduation, explains Stephanie Peters, who said Pope is like a second daughter. “It’s difficult to sum up a person in just a few words, but I have to tell you that Aimee is one of the ‘good guys.’” Peters e-mailed The NEWS. “She’s one of the kindest and most responsible people I’ve ever met: she has a huge heart, oodles of creativity and a passion for justice and animal welfare.” “I’ve seen her make the world a much better place during her first 25 years, and have no
doubt that being able to beat cancer will only strengthen her resolve and positive impact on our community.” Pope has had to leave a job she loves, and her family has to travel for treatment, Peters said. There are a lot of new expenses, and many of her medications are not covered by government insurance. A group, including Pope, will be serving burgers, homemade baked goods and beverages during Joe Cunningham Ford’s Beach Days at the dealership from Thursday, June 25 through Saturday, June 27. Ford is picking up the tab and all workers will be volunteers, so every penny will go towards Pope’s expenses. Come down with an appetite, and let your family, friends and colleagues know about this event. — Submitted by Stephanie Peter
“I purchased my T3 mattress at a Health Show in Victoria BC on January 26, 2014. I love it. I don’t have a sore back anymore as I did with my previous mattress. It doesn’t get hot, plus I get a sound sleep. I also like the fact that it supports and cradles the body, relieving pressure points. The other perks for purchasing this mattress are: Dust Mite Resistant, Mold and Mildew Resistant, plus a 20 Year Warranty. It’s the best mattress I have ever owned. I highly recommend it. The staff are fantastic and extremely knowledgeable.” Darlene Lawson, Victoria

Cost of labour
G
lenn Sollitt and the federal Green Party have got this one right. Almost. Sollitt, the Green Party candidate for the Courtenay-Alberni riding, sent us a letter to the editor last week, extolling the value of Vancouver Island sawmills. More accurately, Sollitt was railing against raw-log exports. Our sister paper, the Alberni Valley Times, had a frontpage story by Eric Plummer last week that revealed the fact that 480,000 cubic metres of raw logs were exported to overseas sawmills from Port Alberni last year. In 2014, Plummer reported, the Port Alberni Port Authority said 53 vessels loaded with raw logs left the city, while just 13 ships carried lumber oversees. Undoubtedly, those raw logs come back to us in the form of manufactured goods. The countries that buy those logs are the ones that get the benefit of the jobs. We get to buy expensive kitchen tables made somewhere else. On the surface it looks like bad business, plain and simple. When will Canada stop being the drawers of water and hewers of wood for the world? We believe Vancouver Island companies would do more with our resources if there was a profit to be had. We cannot expect companies to lose money or break even just for the sake of some principal. Profit is not a dirty word. So, why are we shipping so many raw logs? Our guess is we have priced ourselves out of the market. We cannot compete with companies in other countries that pay their workers much less than what is expected here. To make a chair out of that raw log, it may cost $100 here, $10 in some foreign country. The decision to ship raw logs rather than manufacturing products here is not about corporate greed. It’s fairly simple math. Candidates from the Green Party or the NDP may say they are against raw-log exports, but they are loathe to face the real issue, the elephant in the room: the high cost of labour in this country. Weeks of holidays, benefits, $20/hour or more, 7.5/hour shifts — this is why we have to ship raw logs overseas. These wages and benefits, etc. are the result of hardfought battles over the years and those jobs continue to contribute to the relatively high quality of life we enjoy in this country. But they also eliminate us from participation in some sectors. — Editorial by John Harding

Thanks for lawn bowl supporT The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club would like to thank all those who took part in our June 12-14 tournament in support of the Oceanside Hospice Society. We would also like to especially thank Al Cameron and the Bluenose Motor Company who were so supportive in making this tournament such as success. Carol BuCyk, Parksville lawn Bowling CluB Parksville
Many local experTs for waTer board
The Arrowsmith Parks and Land-use Council, of which I am a founding member, supports the establishment of a local water board to deal with on-going and current issues regarding use and provision of water in the Oceanside area. Our group has actively pursued this objective with MLA Michelle Stilwell, requesting her involvement in the development of a board comprised of voluntary participants who would represent different local interest groups with the objective of careful monitoring and thoughtful planning of our limited water resources. During this extended drought-like period, we are reminded of how crucial the management of water has become in Oceanside — for both humans and fish. This community has an untapped wealth of expertise and experience in the population of retirees who are more than qualified and I believe willing to offer input towards watershed management and governance. I hope that our elected representatives, who do not have this expertise themselves, will take advantage of this priceless resource. susan Croskery Nanoose Bay
GreaT healTh cenTre I find myself responding to the recent articles and letters in The NEWS around the Oceanside Health Centre’s primary care physician. Firstly, thank you to Dr. Marlene van der Weyde for responding two years ago when our new facility needed a doctor.

Thank you for facilitating the growth of a sturdy, knowledgeable, capable team of professionals who can very adequately carry on the job of providing primary health care at the OHC. Thank you for responding now when our community has a palliative care need. Thank you for following your interests and personal needs so that you maintain your own health and well-being. In that strength you are an even better resource in our community. You are a daring pioneer. Secondly, regarding the finger-pointing and fear-mongering that goes on between community, GPs and Island Health about who’s not doing their job, etc., I remind us all that we are living in a time of physician shortage relative to the demand for their services. We have chosen to live in this beautiful, semi-rural community. Let’s make the most of what we do have. Thirdly, as to “people’s lives are at stake,” as one local source said, I say your life is at stake every moment. We are all moving towards death; not a disaster, not a dread, not a surprise, but a normal stage in the process of living. Doctors, wonderful as they are, should not be expected to be a magic wand that rescues us from the natural consequences of our living. They are helpful to guide, advise and help relieve suffering (and yes, they are the gatekeepers for prescription medicines and some services). Neither ought doctors be held as slaves, because of their skills and altruism, to our needs and demands. It helps to remember that there are lots of people with varied skills and areas of expertise who are also able to help us. But it is our individual responsibility to choose our living. Cathy edge Dashwood
plan for The fuTure of waTer and world
Recent NEWS articles have referred to the drought conditions that we are experiencing in Parksville Qualicum Beach. May I use the phrase, ‘you ain’t seen nothing yet’? Our advanced technological society must have learned something from history; or did we? When we humans mess with our environment over a period of time, bad stuff can happen. The barren areas around the Eastern
Mediterranean including the countries of Turkey, Syria Jordan, Egypt and Libya were once fertile, flourishing, productive savannah, some named the ‘Garden of Eden’. Easter Island located many hundreds of kilometers from land was transformed from a lush, abundant tropical island that supported a large population; to a barren windswept almost desert island. This scenario occurred with many advanced civilizations, over millennia. And it happened, before the exorbitant uses of fossil fuels, and the many other modern human influences over our land, water and atmosphere. The sad and shocking fact is that our advanced technological society is not very smart. We live in a bubble of expectation that keeps us in a state of denial. Burning millions of year’s worth of stored energy, could not possibly produce enough heat to change the climate. Sucking water from wells hundreds of meters deep that has been in the ground for thousands of years couldn’t possibly alter hydrologic cycles. Cutting down millions of hectors of lush forest, levelling and paving it, would never reduce evapotranspiration, increase wind speeds and create desert conditions. When we wake up to reality, smell the smoke from forest fires, find that a limited amount of fresh food is unbelievably expensive, and try to find some water in dry creeks; we may come to the improbable conclusion that, although we are much more fortunate than most people in the world, our society didn’t really see this coming. Perhaps we should be planning, for the future. trevor wiCks Qualicum Beach

My lawn is brown. how is yours?
My lawn is brown, always is in the summer. My concern is the water that runs down the road (Memorial Avenue from the traffic circle to Fourth Street in Qualicum Beach) from the median sprinkler system. You can see the water marks on the road. Also by buildings on my walk to work. I can see water running from the sprinklers directly to the parking lot (doesn’t even hit the grass first) and down to the drain. It’s a shame to see all this water being wasted for no reason.

Linda Ermineskin leads students from Oceanside Elementary in a traditional aboriginal dance at the Qualicum Beach Farmers Market on Saturday.

Passing along First Nations stories and culture to youth is important, says liaison CARLI BERRY news@pqbnews.com
National Aboriginal Day was celebrated a day early at the Qualicum Beach Farmers’ Market on Saturday, when students from Oceanside Elementary performed two traditional aboriginal dances along with their teacher. “We’re losing our culture as First Nations. If I don’t share what we have then we’re going to lose it, and these students love it,” said Linda Ermineskin, First Nations liaison for Oceanside Elementary. The first dance was to welcome the market and students used paddles to mimic the rowing of a canoe. The second was more personal, a form of prayer that was created by Ermineskin’s brother that used eagle feathers to symbolize getting over a difficult time-period in one’s life. “I’m very proud to be sharing my culture with Oceanside,” Ermineskin said. National Aboriginal Day was Sunday.

“I wanted to introduce aboriginal culture and food to the market,” said Lorne MacCallum, president of the market. MacCallum said Qualicum First Nations Chief Michael Recalma was enthusiastic towards the idea of adding more First Nations culture to the market. “The word Qualicum means from where the dog salmon are from,” MacCallum said. “The Qualicum First Nations lived here for thousands of years successfully without doing a whole bunch of damage and then as the world evolved and more western cultures (came), things (changed), but it would be neat to make sure people realize there was a history here before what we all see today,” MacCallum said. Ermineskin has been spreading First Nations culture at elementary schools for years. A majority of First Nations history was recorded in stories and oral communications, Ermineskin said. Teaching the students and passing down this culture is important because it’s the only way to keep the culture alive, Ermineskin said. “When that culture vanishes or disappears that culture is gone forever,” she said.

Canada day MusiCal entertainMent
Classic Canadian band set to headline Stage to showcase a wider range of musical genres Jessica skelton reporter@pqbnews.com
Classic Canadian band, The Odds, will headline the musical entertainment in Parksville this Canada Day. And Craig Northey, an original founding member of the band and one of its two vocalist-guitarists, hopes they can inspire plenty of dancing and flag waving. “Come have fun,” he said. “We have fun … we hope it’s infectious.” The Odds, who formed in Vancouver in 1987, are known for hit songs Eat My Brain, Heterosexual Man, Someone Who’s Cool and others. They also produced music for several television shows, including the theme music for The Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town and the Corner Gas theme song, Not a lot Going On. The Odds toured extensively during the 1990s, including as an opening act for The Tragically Hip and Barenaked Ladies, and released several records over the past couple decades. More recently, The Odds were the house band at the Canada Hockey House during the 2010 Winter Olympics and were named the house band for the Vancouver Canucks throughout the 2010 and 2011 NHL playoffs, according to the band’s website. “We’re still passionate about it,” said Northey. “Nothing has really changed.”

The Odds will headline the musical entertainment in Parksville on Canada Day this year. The stage will also see plenty of local and Island talent.
But things have changed a little bit in The Odds nearly 30 year history. Only Northey and bassist Doug Elliott remain of the band’s original line up. Today,
they play with drummer Pat Steward, who joined them in 1995, and Murray Atkinson, who joined on guitar and vocals in 2005.
The band also split up for nearly a decade in the late 90s and early 2000s, but Northey said that didn’t last because the band members “just kept collaborating.” Back together again now for almost 10 years, The Odds are still recording and touring. The band recorded and released a trilogy of EPs over the past year and a half, the last being Party, Party, Party around four months ago. Northey also said he and his band mates have started writing their next full-length album. That record, and its corresponding tour, won’t be ready for another five or six months, though. Until then, The Odds are busying themselves with a number of gigs throughout the summer, which includes their trip to Parksville. And although they have so much new material, Northey said the band plans to focus on their most popular songs for this show. The Odds will take the stage in Parksville Community Park at 9 p.m. on July 1, and will play until just after 10 p.m. As they are the headliners, this band will be the last to perform. Starting off the music-filled day, however, will be a selection of local and Island talents. “I get so many requests,” said organizer Megan Olsen of Arbutus Events of people wanting to play onstage. “I try to stick with the Island as much as possible.” Unlike the last few years, however, Olsen said the musical entertainment will be more varied in 2015. Bard to Broadway shows start next week Sixteenth season, which will run July 3 to August 15, to focus on comedy with four laugh-filled productions Jessica skelton reporter@pqbnews.com
The 16th season of Bard to Broadway (B2B) promises to be full of laughs. “Here on the Island, people are generally not looking for a heavy drama on a warm sum-
mers’ night,” said Eileen Butts, who is the director of this year’s musical A… My name will always be Alice. The first play to hit the stage, however, will be The 39 Steps, which was adapted from the Alfred Hitchcock film of the same
name. In it, dashing hero Richard Hannay encounters murders, gangsters, double-crossing secret agents and beautiful women. While originally a serious spy thriller, this popular stage version is “a farcial piece of theatre,”
said director Vivien Douglas. “I’ve done this show before,” she said. “I had so much fun directing it the first time.” One of the reasons The 39 Steps is so comical is the fact that the entire film with over 40 characters is recreated by only
four actors on a minimal set. While Dan Osleeb plays Richard Hannay throughout the whole show, Kari Larsen carries four roles while Gary Brown and Rob Atkinson each play around 15 characters. See ticketS, page A25 Print Media Sponsor

Music trivia at Fairwinds
Reserve your seat now to avoid missing out on the fun night Do you know your music? If so, show off your knowledge at Fairwinds Golf Club during their music trivia night on June 27. “It’ll fill up pretty quick,” said Fairwinds’ restaurant and sales manager Lori Ravensbergen, adding that music trivia nights held in the past were popular and successful. This month’s event, titled “Old Time Rock & Roll Music Trivia that isn’t Trivial,” will be hosted by Tsawwassen’s TimeMachine band and will focus on music from the 60s, 70s and 80s, said a press release from Fairwinds. There will also be a buffet and cash bar open at the event, said Ravensberger. The fun starts at 6 p.m. in the Arbutus Room at Fairwinds Clubhouse. For reservations, which Ravensbergen recommends, call 250-468-9915. —NEWS Staff/Fairwinds Golf Course

Get ready for another night of great jazz at the McMillan Arts Centre this Friday. Performing songs from the encyclopedic book of classic standards, keyboardist and keyboard bass master Marty Steele will accompany vocalist Ralph Barrat. Barrat is a jazz singer and piano player hailing from the Comox Valley. Formerly of the Georgia Strait Big Band, Jazztet and the Jenn Forsland Group, Barrat currently performs around the Island at weddings, restaurants, theatres, clubs, hotels and seniors centres as a soloist or as part of bigger combos. Among his many influences are singer/ keyboardists Nat King Cole, Harry Connick Jr., Mose Allsion and piano players Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans. “Some folks think I sound like Tormé, Bublé, Baker, and Sinatra all rolled into one,” he said. “I’ll take that as a compliment!” Joining him in Parksville will be the talented Marty Steele. One of Nanaimo’s most versatile and busiest keyboardist, Steele has played at almost every venue possible in the Hub City over the last three and a half years. He has also played the Victoria Jazz Festival and the Chemainus Jazz Festival with his groups Navica and the Martys. Like the great jazz organists of old, Steele plays the bass lines at the same time as be plays the piano. The Island duo will play on Friday, June 26, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the performance beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 for OCAC members and $15 for general admission. They are available for purchase now at the MAC or by phone at 250248-8185. —NEWS Staff/the MAC

“It’s non-stop,” said Brown, who described the play as “quite hilarious” and “very creative.” “It’s rather like a love letter to the art of theatre,” said Douglas, referring to how the play gets the cast and crew to recreate action-packed scenes by using a little imagination, good lighting and sound effects and plenty of quick accent and costume changes. Wacky and wild, The 39 Steps is perfect for families as it also doesn’t have bad language in it, said Brown, who is also involved in B2B as a director this year. Brown has taken the reigns of the season’s second show, The Owl and the Pussycat. A romantic comedy by Bill Manhoff, this play tells the story of quiet, unpublished writer Felix and Doris, the free-spirited, high-spirited woman. After Felix gets Doris evicted for prostitution, she barges her way into his apartment and the mismatched couple embark on a classic love/ hate relationship. “It’s a very, very funny show,” said Brown. “I think the audience will get a kick out of it.” Of course, he also warns that the play is not family-friendly due to mature content. The Owl and the Pussycat was first penned in the 1960s and subsequently adapted into a film with Barbra Streisand and George Segal in 1970. For the B2B production, husband and wife team Jay and Daniella Norton will take on the roles of Felix and Doris. Next onstage will be A… My Name Will Always be Alice by Joan Micklin Silver and Julianne Boyd. This lively musical revue offers a kaleidoscope view of contemporary women in 22 self-contained songs and vignettes. According to a press release from B2B, the show portrays women of all ages and types in a wide variety of situations and relationships. “It’s got such a range,” said Butts. “It’s really a showcase for the cast.” Featured in Alice will be actors Rosalee Sul-
livan, Marilyn Holt, Jennifer Kelly, Belle Warner and Sarah McKelvey, who will all play multiple roles on a simple and versatile set. Alongside these actors will be a live jazz combo to provide the music, said Butts. Again, this show does contain mature content. The last play to debut will be Aladdin Jr. by Menken, Ashman, Rice and Luigs. A family favourite, the show features all of your favourite characters from the hit Disney film – Aladdin, Jasmine, Iago, Jafar and the Genie -- and more in this musical adventure filled with magic and mayhem. As the name suggests, Aladdin Jr. will be presented by the participants in B2B’s teen musical theatre program under the direction of Hilary Whelton. Rehearsals for this play haven’t started yet simply because the program doesn’t get underway until late July. There is still space open in the class for youth aged 13-18, however, so anyone interested in joining shouldn’t delay in signing up. Tickets for all shows in the upcoming B2B season are on sale now by phone at 250-7524470 or in person at the Village Theatre box office in Qualicum Beach. Tickets for Aladdin Jr. are $11 each, while tickets for the three remaining shows are $11 for children, $20 for students and seniors, and $22 for adults. The 39 Steps will run on July 3-4, 11, 13-14, 20-21, 27 and August 1, 3, 7 at 7:30 p.m. It will also show at 2 p.m. on July 26 and August 2. A… My Name Will Always be Alice will show at 7:30 p.m. on July 7-10, 22-23, 30-31 and August 4-6, 8, 12, 15. The 2 p.m. matinee for this production is on August 9. The Owl and the Pussycat will run on July 6, 15-17, 24-25, 28-29 and Aug 10-11 at 7:30 p.m.. It will show on July 5 and 19 at 2 p.m. Finally, Aladdin Jr. will have one 7:30 p.m. show on August 13. It will then run as a 2 p.m. matinee on Aug 14-15. For more information, visit b2btheatre.com.
Music in the park starts at 12:30 p.m. continued from Page a23
Alongside the usual folk/acoustic rock, there will also be country, hair metal, bluesy rock and reggae. “This year, I wanted to try a few different genres,” she said, adding that this would “give everyone the chance to listen to music they love.” New talent Alex Wicket will kick things off from 12:30-1 p.m., followed by Tora Leigh from 1:15-2 p.m. and Mike Tompkins from 2:15-3 p.m. Long-time local performers Bev Finch and the Baseman will then play from 3:15-4 p.m. From 4:15-5 p.m., Nanaimo contemporary
country band The Boot Hill Boys with take the stage. They will then be followed by bluesy rock locals Counting Time from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Next, Turn it to 11 will cover classic arenarock-hair-bands from 6:45-7:45 p.m. “It’s full performance… spandex and all,” said Olsen. Finally, the second to last group will be the popular Canadian reggae group Tasman Jude from 8-8:45 p.m. This group last played in Qualicum Beach on June 20. All musical entertainment on Canada Day, which takes place on the stage in the Parksville Community Park, is free for everyone to attend.

Scott, Neil April 10th, 1931 – June 15th, 2015
It is with great sadness, that our family must announce the sudden passing of our loving husband, dad and poppa Neil after a brief illness. Neil was predeceased by his two brothers Lloyd and Ab. He is lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend of 60 years, Bernice, his son David (Johanna), daughter Karen (Richard) and his four beloved grandchildren, Jacob, Hanna, Amy and Kylee. Neil was born in Calgary, Alberta, and moved to BC with his family at age five. The family soon moved to Wall Beach, Nanoose Bay, where Neil’s dad ran an Auto Court. Neil spent his early years as a logger, and then moved on to work at BC Telephone Company for 35 years. Even before his retirement from BC Tel, Neil was moving on to bigger and more exciting projects! Neil and his partners formed Arbutus Park Estates, which subdivided and developed Madrona Point, where Neil and Bernice eventually built their home and have resided for the past 36 years. After Madrona Point was complete, Neil had an even more elaborate vision for his next project, and decided Nanoose Bay wouldn’t be complete without an 18 hole championship golf course. Fairwinds was born and Neil and his partners set off building their dream of a golf course and surrounding subdivision. This project eventually included Schooner Cove Marina and Hotel. Neil was also involved in the early development of Dolphin Beach Estates, he and Bernice built a cabin where the family spent every summer when the kids were young. Neil loved being on the water and was an avid fisherman. In his later years Neil, Bernice and the family spent many summer days cruising the waters aboard his Tollycraft “Thunderbirdâ€?. Neil and Bernice loved to travel, and had the opportunity to visit many different destinations with family and friends. Neil was always busy either in his garden, woodworking in his garage, golfing, taking pictures, or just having a drink with friends. Neil achieved so much in his lifetime, but to him there were still so many things left to do. Rest in Peace Dad (Poppa), life won’t be the same without you‌‌ A celebration of life for Neil will be held Friday, June 26th, 2015, at 2:00 pm at Fairwinds Clubhouse, 3730 Fairwinds Drive, Nanoose Bay, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations in Neil’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC, or the Canadian Cancer Society. First Memorial Funeral Services 250-754-8333

Amy Pearl Douglas April 22, 1924 – June 7, 2015 Amy Douglas passed away peacefully on June 7, 2015 in Qualicum Beach, BC. A warm and loving wife, mother, sister and aunt; a true and loyal friend, and a faithful Christian. She will be mourned by Anne and husband Stuart, nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by husband Brinkman (1989) and son, Robert (1972), her parents, siblings, and many dear friends. Amy was the youngest girl born to farmers Eugene and Theresa Oswin in a family of seven girls and two boys. Family was very important, and she kept in close touch with her siblings all through her life. Raised in rural Jamaica, she moved to Kingston for high school and further education. She married Brinkman Douglas in 1951. Son Robert was born in 1952, Anne in 1956. Amy helped Brinkman establish a successful manufacturing business, supplying the concrete blocks to build many of Jamaica’s homes. She was able to be at home as her children grew. She did the driving, and volunteered at swim championships and on many projects for the ‘Inner Wheel’ of the Rotary Club of Kingston. After Robert’s death in a car accident, the family immigrated to Vancouver in 1974. In her 50s, she upgraded her skills and worked for Yamaha and then Canada Trust. She volunteered for many years, and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Richmond. She lived in Richmond until 2012, when she moved to the island to live with Anne and Stuart. She loved to play and watch tennis, and loved to fish, twice catching a barracuda. An avid gardener, she saved and planted seeds from any fruit she enjoyed. In Jamaica, she once counted 37 different fruits and vegetables in her garden, plus her beautiful roses and other flowers. Amy loved and trusted in God, and she and Brinkman raised their children as Anglicans. She was a member of St. Andrew Parish Church in Kingston, St. Alban’s in Richmond, and St. Mark’s in Qualicum Beach. Anne and Stuart thank the staff of the Green Wing at Eagle Park for their warmth, kindness and excellent care in the last months of Amy’s life. They helped her to smile, even in her last days. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm on June 25, 2015 at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, 138 Hoylake Road West, Qualicum Beach, BC.

Judith Anne Koeleman Parksville/Campbell River June 6, 1957 to June 13, 2015 Judith’s life which was blessed with love, laughter and good friends has ended. She tackled the brain cancer with all her strength and kept a positive outlook to the end. Judith wished to thank her family, friends, neighbours, Mark Koeleman and Knox United Church for their prayers, support and compassion. Family also extends their thanks to the staff at Nanaimo Regional Hospital and Stanford Place for the care they provided her. Judith is survived by her son Mark Ravenstein (Rebecca, granddaughter Piper), brothers James Martin (Tina) and Donald Martin (Julie), sister-in-law Sarina Martin. Predeceased by her daughter Lisa Ravenstein, brother David Martin and parents Gerald and Lily Martin. By request no service or flowers. A celebration of life will be held at a future time.
Judith’s mantra: Peace, Love and Joy. Most of all with God, family and friends.
LENNOX, Richard Bruce Munro (Dick) April 28, 1932 – June 16, 2015 LENNOX, Richard Bruce Munro (Dick) died peacefully at Nanaimo General Hospital on June 16, 2015 surrounded by family. Born in Charleswood, Manitoba on April 28, 1932 to Helen Ross and William Henry Lennox, Dick grew up loved and doted on by his brothers, Alan James and William Ross (Bill). Dick is survived by his wife and best friend, Katharine, their children Duncan, Jenepher (Kevin Terrion) and Andrea (Alex Russell), and grandchildren Keziah, Claire, Jack, Samuel, Richard and Katie. All remember him as a loving, gentle, and inspiring father and grandfather. A champion golfer as a young man, Dick was described by the Winnipeg Free Press in 1953 as “the youngster who cracks them a mile at Charleswood golf course. He spent his career in international sales and travelled to more than 100 countries marketing Canadian agricultural products and industrial equipment. Many of his designs were patented and he was respected internationally for his integrity and creativity. In Japan he was christened “Soba Taro Shigamori (Buckwheat King). In retirement Dick was an inventor and designer who worked tirelessly in his workshop. His many inventions, ideas, thoughts, and musings were evidence of the depth of his brilliant mind and kept him busy until the day before he died. Dick was creative, determined, witty, generous, kind, classy and charming. He played piano, loved to dance, recited poetry, and was a gifted storyteller. He was an original thinker whose many skills – and perseverance – culminated in the Katharine de Montrose, the 46-foot ocean-going sailboat that he crafted with help from friends and family. The boat was featured in many newspaper and television stories and was the subject of the Life Network documentary “Magnificent Obsessions. Dick’s life ended as he lived it, with grace, dignity and good humour. In fact, in the hospital just hours before he died, he quipped to the nurses and family, “You’re probably wondering why I called this meeting? He will be deeply missed. A celebration of Dick’s amazing life will be held later this summer.

Cst. Tamara Aquilini inspected utility trailers this weekend in order to ensure vehicle safety for the summer months.
Road Safety
Is your trailer safe to tow?
RCMP and Commercial Vehicle Safety & Enforcement initiative CARLI BERRY news@pqbnews.com
The local RCMP and Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) offered a free trailer inspection to those who stopped at the Commercial Vehicle Scales outside of Parksville on Saturday. During the May long weekend, approximately six recreational and utility trailers failed inspection and five were towed away, which lead the RCMP and CVSE to offer the free inspection as a public information session. Officers inspected trailers from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in an effort to keep motorists safe for the summer season. “Historically, every summer we always seem to end up with a boat on the Englishman River Bridge,” Cst. Tamara Aquilini of the Oceanside RCMP said. The primary issue was that vehicles did not have an adequate braking system installed, she said.
“It’s either not been secured properly or maybe their brakes didn’t work.” Aquilini said approximately 20 vehicles had been inspected at the scale as of 11 a.m. Saturday. “We’ve had a lot of passes but we’ve also had a lot of (fails),” she said. Tickets for having a defective trailer can range depending on the offense. “It’s $138 per wheel if your brakes aren’t working,” Aquilini said. “Do your research, know what to look for, and be educated on the testing that you need to do,” Aquilini said. ICBC has pamphlets you can download (www.icbc.com/driver-licensing/driving-guides) for trailers and CVSE has a website that provides information, she said. Some other uncommon knowledge is that “If a trailer is over 4,600 kg you have to have a class 1, 2, or 3 licence,” Aquilini said. The scales are open 24 hours.

Join the Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association (QBDBA) as it celebrates the first night of the fourth annual Uptown Summer Market on Thursday, July 2. There will be an official ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening at 7 p.m. on the corner of Primrose Street and Second Avenue. The QBDBA says this year’s market will be the biggest and best yet with two blocks of Second Avenue closed to traffic allowing for even more vendors and entertainment. Merchants along Second Avenue will be open late and there will be new and exciting
street vendors as well as our favorites from last summer. Highlights this year include musical entertainment by Counting Time, Debbie Ryan, Dave Marco, Two on Jazz, Peter Mason and Friends, and our Chamber Stage friends Bruce & Bob. The Kid’s Zone will be back again this year. Look for even more local merchants, artists, artisans, farmers, bakers and now even some local wineries. — Submitted by the Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association

Royals pitchers help win one of three
Quality Foods Parksville Royals struggling, but learning important lessons in practice T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
The Quality Foods Parksville Royals picked up a victory over the Victoria Mariners in a double-header this weekend, winning 6-3. With three games last week, the Royals had the lone victory on Saturday to go with two losses, one to the Nanaimo Pirates Wednesday (7-1) and a 10-0 loss to the Mariners. Royals Pitcher Colton Tuka got the win on the mound in game one on Saturday, pitching six and two-thirds innings, striking out seven batters and giving up three runs on eight hits. This was Tuka’s third win on the mound this season for the Royals. “Tuka pitched a solid game,” Royals head coach Dave Wallace said. “We were able to give him some run support throughout the game as well, which was nice to see.” “Our pitching staff has done a good job all season at giving us a chance to win ball games and we were able to pull

through offensively to get some runs up on the board and win one.”
It was a good offensive display for the Royals in their 6-3 win over the Mariners as the
team put together 12 hits, with all but one player registering a hit in the game.
Adam McKillican, the designated hitter in the game, collected three RBI’s for the Royals, while centerfielder Ethan Fox had two RBI’s and catcher Cory Bukauskas went 2-3 with an RBI as well. “It was good to see the bats come alive,” Wallace said. “We’ve struggled at the plate this year to put together hits and drive in runs as a team.” “We’ve had guys in scoring position and failed to bring them around multiple times, so to see us have a game like this was a good sign that the hard work they’ve been putting in at practice has paid off.” The lone win this past weekend gives the Royals a 6-22 record on the season, currently putting them in last place in the BCPBL. Though they’re at the bottom looking up, the Royals aren’t far behind the teams ahead of them as just four games separates them from moving from last place up to eighth place in the league. Greens Report
Through no fault of their own, during last year season the greens at Morningstar took a beating. Rumors abound, wannabee agronomists provided inaccurate insight and golfing green thumbs from around Oceanside injected their own solution. “They’ll never recover” they bellowed and shouted. Yes a combination of very salty irrigation water, no rain to wash it away and intense sun for the most part baked ‘em, fried ‘em, killed ‘em. Well let’s turn the page and also drill numerous fresh water wells and voila and what have we here Sherlock? Look, fantastic greens again. Was this the word from the GM? The Pro Shop? The Greens Superintendent? No, no my happy hackers, yours truly personally inspected them, stroked them and short of rolling on them like a cute dog scratching its own back, made darn sure they were very playable. It’s nothing short of a botanical miracle. On a sunny day with Head Pro Kevin Oates as my guide I walked away with a broad smile and a huge appreciation for the recovery efforts put forth by the ownership

team, the GM and the one person whose head was on a platter Superintendent Jay Leach who now could print lawn signs that read “Jay Leach for Mayor” and win. Hats off to his crew, those guys and gals in the trenches who are up at 5, sweating and grooming 120 acres of grass and can proudly boast where they work and what they do. If they miss a weed or two leave ‘em alone please. You can see numerous great photos on the Morningstar website listed above but the most beneficial one might be this shot of number 3 green that I took May 29, 2015 which, when I last played in the fall of 2014, was a dried slab of hardened clay with a few sprigs
of grass. Now it’s a bent grass carpet of delight. In a quick greenside interview with one of the 4 gents playing this hole when asked to describe what they thought of the greens the first comment was “Nothing short of fantastic” and a resounding confirmation that these 4 out of towners would be back soon.
2015 and Beyond
Ok, in bullet point form cause I’m almost out of space here is the rest of the good news. Ready? • New chipping and practice area behind 18 green, 50 % larger with moguls, heavy rough and groomed fringes to replicate all types of shots.
• New power cart fleet – 60 Club Cars from the good folks at Isle Golf Cars. • Clubhouse has new carpet, new paint job and same great team with updated menu. • Randle Golf Academy with Matt Cella now on board providing a myriad of golf lesson and clinics with state of the art advanced teaching methods. • John Randle guaranteed to cure Bills shanks. ( That’s me) Enjoy what will be a fantastic year at the revitalized Morningstar Golf Club. Stay in touch and as always “Good golfing”.

Consistency key to finding success CONTINuEd from Page a32
“The standings are close,” Wallace said. “Everyone is capable of pulling off wins against any team, it doesn’t matter where you are in the standings.” “Of course, we’d like to be up there a little higher and closer to being in a playoff spot but we aren’t that far off.” “If we can maintain the level of consistency we showed in our win against the Mariners on
Saturday, we’ll find ourselves in a favourable spot in due time.” The Royals are back in action this weekend as they’ll be on the mainland for four games, two against the Abbotsford Cardinals on Saturday, June 27 and two against the Langley Blaze on Sunday, June 28. The Royals will then return home for a double-header on July 1 (Canada Day) against the Victoria Eagles.
