“SPOTLIGHT ON ART”

runs from June 19 to 26th in the CAPITOL Theatre, on Argyle in the heart of Port Alberni’s Arts District. The Gallery space will be open each day from 10:30 to 5:00 PM. The show will include the work of several local and mid-island artists working in a variety of 2 and 3D media, and student work from the Art Program at ADSS including ceramic masks, drawings & paintings. During the week of Art Rave’s tenure at the CAPITOL, the licensed lounge will be open at 6:30.

THE “SPOTLIGHT ON ART” SHOW opens with a Reception on Friday, June 19th running from 7 to 11pm. There will be a cash bar, and live music will add to the evening’s ambience. ALSO, BE SURE AND CATCH A COUPLE OF SPECIAL EVENTS AT THE CAPITOL: Tuesday, June 23th - 7:30PM: Reading of the play, “Cloudburst” by Thom Fitzgerald. Synopsis: Now in their seventies, Stella and Dot make a bold decision: they will escape a nursing home to make their way to Canada, where same-sex marriage is legal. En route to Canada, they pick up a young hitchhiker, Prentice. A small-

town boy turned modern dancer, he is returning to Nova Scotia to visit his dying mother. With equal parts humour and grace, Cloudburst explores the important themes of life, death and love through the eyes of this oddball trio.

Even if you don’t remember the ‘good old days’ when the family gathered around the radio on a summer’s evening to listen to The Shadow and other serial radio plays you will enjoy Sunday’s production of Buckeraroo Bob on the Lone Prairie, written and directed by Gwynne Hunt. Art for All Ages Tent will offer everyone the opportunity to paint a festive flag or banner to decorate your home or garden. These projects are done on rip stop nylon to last, using a permanent paint so old clothing or aprons are suggested. Carving Tent, both Saturday and Sunday, offers displays and demos by several valley carvers. Catch the action and watch the chips fly with Saturday and Sunday demos by local Chain Saw Carver, Jesse Toso. Art Demo tent offering Life Drawing, Still Life demos. The public is encouraged to try their hand. There will be an Art Market with a selection of local and mid-Island artists and artisans displaying and selling their creations.

Art Rave will use the Performance Stage at the rear of the Spirit Square building adjacent to the playground. Local musicians and Spoken Word artists will be performing throughout the afternoon.

Special Sunday afternoon performances... kick up your heels to Port Alberni’s own marimba band the joyful, Marim-Bam-Buzz.

The concept is simple, the times were simple. The audience watch a 1940’s cast arrive for work and present a special family friendly radio play. Buckeroo Bob and his trusty sidekick Seamus save a damsel (or two) in distress and rescue one more dusty town from demise.
