Cache Creek asks for $3 million in aid
Cache Creek’s annual Graffiti Days was one of the best ever with one of the highest turnouts for cars and old car fans. The Langley Loafers reported their biggest ever event at the Motorplex.
Cache Creek Council approved the submission of nearly $3 million dollars worth of restoration projects to the Disaster Financial Assistance program at a special meeting called last Friday. Even if every project is approved for maximum funding, the Village would still be liable for $600,000 of the costs. The Village has engaged Nor-ex Engineering to assist with a disaster recovery plan. That includes identifying damage that needs to be addressed and places to seek funding. One of the projects approved is have Nor-ex continue with their disaster recovery role for the next three months. Nor-ex VP Operations Neil Barrett explained that the projects were divided into A, B, C priorities as well as “Enhancement”. The projects include everything from the complete restoration of Stage Rd. and Old Cariboo Rd., to the demolition of two severely damaged homes to debris removal and compensation for staff time devoted to flood assistance. “A” priorities included Stage Road restoration which was estimated at $1.7 million. Lopez-Cache Creek Rehabilitation is listed in the “B” priorities for $600,000. “This is a living document,” Barrett told Council. “It forms the lion’s share of the recovery plan.” He advised Council that projects would be added as discovered and they would be looking for other grants to lessen the Village’s liability.
Landfill gas use becomes reality Wastech celebrated the official opening of its Landfill Gas Utilization Plant at the Cache Creek Landfill on Monday, an initiative that will generate electricity at a rate of 4.8 megawatts – enough to power more than 2500 typical households. The project traps gas that is naturally generated from the landfilling process, and sells it to BC Hydro. Representatives of Wastech and its parent company Belkorp Environmental Services Inc. were joined by MLA Jackie Tegart and John Ranta, Mayor of Cache Creek, to cut the ribbon official-

ly celebrating the project’s commencement. “By utilizing the gas that is naturally generated, this investment adds a new dimension to the waste management practices at the Cache Creek Landfill,” said Stuart Belkin, Chairman & CEO of Belkorp Industries Inc. Mayor Ranta thanked the foresight of previous town councils for welcoming Wastech and the landfill to Cache Creek. “This is yet another indication Cache Creek is alive and well contrary to news reports of the past week,” he said.
