A celebrity softball game is being held at the annual Slo-Pitch tournament in Aldergrove this weekend. Come to Parkside Elementary ball diamond at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday to watch numerous Canucks alumni like Cliff Ronning, Garth Butcher, Xmen actress Katie Stuart, UFC fighter Jason Dooms Day and many more hit one out of the park, all for the cause of helping abused children. Sexual abuse survivor Andy Bhatti has played in the slo-pitch tournament for years and thought what a great way to spread awareness and raise money for a worthy cause. “Lots of people ask why do this in Aldergrove? I put together this many celebrities, but I think Aldergrove is the best place. It’s my own town and this is where awareness is needed,” said Bhatti, a recent recipient of the Courage to Come Back Award in the addictions category. Bhatti was sexually abused by his Big Brother when he joined Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley at the age of nine. His abuser was later convicted for abusing two boys in Kamloops. But Bhatti never told anyone about the abuse and instead escaped his reality by using heroin. He found himself living in the Downtown Eastside because ‘that was a place I wasn’t being judged and

where I felt comfortable.’ Now nearly nine years clean, Bhatti has made it his mission to spread awareness and provide support to other survivors. He started up his own non-profit Survivors Supporting Survivors. He is now a certified interventionist and is helping abuse survivors and addicts get the help they need. Canucks alumni like Langley’s John Craighead will join UFC fighter Jason Dooms Day, Just 4 Laughs comedian Darcy Michaels and Stuart (who played Kitty in Xmen) among other celebrities who will play in the charity game. Following the game people can meet the stars and get their autograph by donation as well as participate in a silent auction and raffle prizes including a 55 inch TV donated by Langley Chrysler, $700 bike from Cranky’s and a Jose Canseco bat. There are an estimated 50 ball teams playing in the Aldergrove tournament that goes all Saturday and Sunday. Bhatti figured with this many people at the park it was a great opportunity to raise awareness about sexual abuse and to raise money for Sophie’s Place, the first centre in B.C. of its kind to provide wrap around services to children who suffer trauma like sexual abuse. Bhatti continues to advocate for children who have experienced sexual abuse.

‘Help’ is close at hand in B.C. FROM FRONT:

Hearing from a victim of abuse in Newfoundland, Bhatti will be biking across that province on July 25 to Aug. 8, spreading awareness and funds to help sexually abused children. Currently Newfoundland has no victim services and the nearest help for kids is in Ontario, said Bhatti. “Every province should have a centre like Sophie’s Place,” said Bhatti. Here in B.C., Sophie’s Place offers compassionate services under one roof and was the only one of its kind in the province. Seeing its success has led to one recently opening in Maple Ridge and five more expected to open in B.C. Sadly, this service is much in demand. One in three girls are sexually abused and one in five boys. The Internet has created all

sorts of new young victims, said the Centre for Child Development’s Judy Krawchuck. The Centre is connected with Sophie’s Place. Child luring and sexual explotation through the Internet is a growing problem in B.C., said Krawchuck. For Bhatti, who is a trained interventionist as well as being trained in prevention, he usually gets around 10 men contacting him after he holds an event to say they were also sexual abused as a child but they have never said it publicly. “I can refer them to get help. Never give up, keep fighting for courage to come back By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

No matter what happens, Mark Stockbrocks is the kind of guy who simply never gives up. Almost four years ago when he was barely in his 30s Stockbrocks suffered a stroke. It left him with no feeling in, or control of, both his legs and left arm, and very limited control of his right arm. It was a crippling blow for a young man who was fit enough to be an athlete and enjoyed his labouring work with Langley School District. Stockbrocks was also contemplating becoming a fire fighter. All those dreams were quashed in an instant — but you wouldn’t know it in talking to the man who is consigned to a wheelchair. For now. He exudes optimism and ambition and refuses to see himself as a victim. He also has excellent body mass and his legs and arms are not frail or atrophied either, thanks to his dedication to exercise and working out, which he hopes will one day help

reconnect his brain to his muscles and nerves. “There is a disconnect between my brain and spinal cord, I have no motor control,” says Stockbrocks. “But I work my muscles at the physiological level, to keep in shape but also because the input stimulation of my muscles working could bring about ‘reserve mapping’ by sending signals from my muscles to my brain.” Stockbrocks has moved from Aldergrove to a BC Housing apartment in Yaletown because there are more services available from the Coastal Health Authority than out here in the valley from Fraser Health. Donors such as Freemasons have also provided continuing assistance, such as providing the equipment he uses in his apartment. This includes pilates and electric stimulation equipment, a standing frame that supports him as he tries to learn to walk on his feet, and a power assist cycle which he straps his feet in and which keeps his legs toned as it works his leg muscles.

Many rehabilitation practitioners have told Stockbrocks that he “might as well give up” because the recovery process can be so incremental that it can’t be measured. “I’m grateful to be alive. It could have been so much worse… I can still talk, my facial muscles are normal and I have some control over my right hand,” says Stockbrocks. “I can’t bring myself to give up because I just think if I had would I be saying years from now, ‘What if I had tried?’ “It’s a lifelong recovery process.” He is also grateful to his family and friends who have stood by him and continue to support him. His mother, Pat, believes in him, so much so that she has become a constant part of his life, by counseling him, finding resources to help him and living with him as a resident caretaker and driver. “I’m fortunate that I’m retired so I can dedicate my life to helping Mark,” says Pat. “A lot of the agencies don’t know SEE: Page 4

‘Starfish’ backpack program to continue here By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

There are children in Aldergrove who go to school hungry every day. For a variety of reasons, their parents can’t feed them properly. Knowing that hungry kids can’t learn, the schools offer breakfast and lunch programs to help these kids. But what about weekends? The Starfish backpack program provides weekend food for hungry kids in Aldergrove. Launched for a trial period from April to June by the Aldergrove Rotary Club, 10 students in need from Parkside Elementary School and 10 from Shortreed Elementary have been going home Friday afternoons with backpacks full of nutritious and easy to prepare food for the weekend.

Thanks to a commitment by the Aldergrove Rotary Club and the ongoing support from the schools, volunteers and three Aldergrove grocery stores who provide the food at cost — Otter Co-op, Saveon Foods and Canada Safeway — the Starfish backpack program will be continued, and hopefully expanded, for the school year from this September to June 2016. A total of $525 is the cost to provide one weekend backpack to one child every Friday for the whole school year. The goal of the Aldergrove Rotary Club is to provide backpacks to 40 or 50 children and to expand the program to include students from Betty Gilbert Middle School. For every donation of $525, one more child will not go hungry on weekends.

Stockbrocks comes back to Aldergrove twice a week for hourlong sessions at the facility’s swimming pool, because this is the one service that is not available anywhere else. And Stockbrocks swears by it. “It provides core strengthening: I do squats, stretching, leg presses, trying to take steps, trying to ‘wake up’ my left arm. I swim like a seahorse,” he added with a laugh. “I’m grateful that Joyce (Wilson) has never given up on me. Without that attitude I would not get this far. Township negligent in maintaining its property Editor: The Township of Langley is showing negligence in maintaining its own property. I live in Aldergrove and my house backs onto a green space, which the Township refuses to maintain. I have had a tree fall on my house, despite my warnings to the Township to do something about the trees in the green space. The Township would not pay any damages. I have had pieces of trees fall onto my fence and damage it, and again the Township refuses to take responsibility. Now I am in a dispute with them over blackberry bushes that are on Township property and invading my backyard. A year ago, when the tree fell on my house, the Township had no choice but to come and cut the remainder of the tree down, and while crews were doing that they decided to take away the blackberry bushes that were growing along part of my fence line. Since then they have grown back in a monstrous way and are probably going to push my fence over. I have sent pictures to the Township and requested that they remove the blackberry bushes or cut them back away from my fence. They have denied my request, but told me they will allow me to cut them back one metre from my fence line into their greenspace. This would be a monumental task for me to do, and yet a simple job for the Township with their crews and machinery. I explained this to the Township, however, my request was denied again. I find it rather annoying that I pay property taxes and when I need the assistance of the Township to deal with their own mess, they tell me to do it myself. Changes in riding boundaries Bridge tolls a burden not very good for Langley I wonder if people are becoming immune to the near-constant change in provincial and federal electoral boundaries. Both levels of government appoint commissions to adjust boundaries every 10 years or so. As Langley is in one of the fastest-growing areas of the province, adjustments here are recommended each time the commissions meet. Inevitably, more MLA and MPs are added — a practice many citizens feel is wasteful. At the provincial level, MLAs have represented the two Langleys and no other communities since the early 1980s. Prior to that, Langley was the name of a riding, but it often included portions of Surrey or Matsqui (now Abbotsford). There was no Langley riding before 1966, when Hunter Vogel was elected as the first Langley MLA. Langley had been part of the huge Delta riding until that time. Delta included Richmond, Surrey, Delta, White Rock and the two Langleys, and even with two members (as it had from 1956-66), it contained far more people than many other B.C. ridings. Since the 1991 election, there has been a Langley and

Editor: I have sent the following letter to Fort Langley-Aldergrove MLA Rich Coleman. I am an 11-year resident of Fort Langley. My husband and I are seniors. We are retired from our “day jobs” and are on fixed incomes. I have just had a look at my recent TREO bill and find it is over $56 already, and it is not even the end of May. Maybe it is small change for many, but to us it is a big dent in our disposable income. We regularly travel to Vancouver, Port Coquitlam and Maple Ridge to visit family, and for medical services. We find these tolls increasingly onerous. With the recent announcement of the closing of the Pattullo Bridge to most traffic for a year and a half, the future looks even more bleak. Not only are alternative routes to avoid tolls being shut off, but also the traffic volume will be unpleasant. And we have to pay it — both ways. We’re just regular folks — senior folks — but if we are finding it difficult to make ends meet, we know we are not the only ones feeling the pinch. Actually, I think the pinch has broken the skin. These are difficult times and if there is some way you can ease the expense of bridge travel, it would be appreciated. I suggest now would be a time when you could reduce the tolls by half. You’ll get an increase in the volume of traffic anyway, and you can look like a hero. Thanks for all you do for B.C. citizens. Myrna Pfeifer, Fort Langley

Cougar sighted in Otter area Aldergrove Star

The Otter Co-op on 248 Street and Fraser Highway is urging caution after a cougar was sighted Thursday and Friday night. “We urge all our customers and friends to stay cautious while in the Langley/Aldergrove area” says an online warning posted Saturday. The notice said the big cat

was seen near the store the “past couple nights” and advised that “ ... if you are in the area and if you spot it, pick children off the ground and calmly back away. When you are a safe distance, report the sighting to the Ministry of Environment at 1-877-952-7277.” Earlier this month, a warning was issued after a young cow was killed in South Langley.

Former Horse Council BC Board member Barb Schmidt presented the HCBC 2014 Horse of the Year NonCompetitive Award to the Humphrey family for Snap Around Jackie at the BC Concours Voltige International on Saturday, May 30, at Chilliwack Heritage Park. Jackie, as she was known, was born in Terrace, but was raised, and lived in, Langley her entire life. Jackie started life out with the Humphrey family by being traded for a 1981 Ford truck. She started her early years as a rodeo horse, competing in barrel racing, team roping, breakaway roping, and grand entry. She helped the Humphreys win the Team Roping Championships in the BC Team Roping Association and helped Chenine Humphrey to qualify for the BC Rodeo Finals in breakaway roping. Jackie and Chenine entered the new world of

At the age of 18, Jackie was brought out of retirement to start a new career as a vaulting horse. She was always calm and quiet and the perfect horse to build confidence on.

Although she had a long competitive career, Jackie will be most fondly remembered as the horse that looked after everyone who rode her, from rock stars to para-Olympians to young children, and who proudly carried her owner, Chenine Humphrey, dress and all down the aisle at her wedding. This amazing red mare passed away in November of 2014.

Matthew’s House has a ‘mystery prize’

Membership Deﬁnitely Has Its Rewards RETIRING DIRECTOR

OTTER CO-OP MEMBERS TO SHARE OVER $4.4 MILLION IN EQUITY! The 93rd Annual Meeting of the Otter Farm & Home Co-operative was held on Thursday, May 28th at D.W. Poppy Secondary. There were 178 members and 36 guests in attendance. Congratulations to re- elected Directors Susan Dodd and Larry Jantzen and newcomer Brian Thomasson all elected for a three year term. For the 5th year in a row Otter Co-op has obtained record sales surpassing last year’s sales by 6.9%. Last year we expanded with the re-branding of

two gas bars in Abbotsford and the opening of our Chilliwack Bulk Plant and gas bar. We have budgeted $2.5 million to do a complete “reﬁt” of the retail centre as well as $2 million rebuild of our pellet mill at our feed operation. We are pleased to say we have added 4,648 new members making our total membership 53,000 of which 40,000 are active. What a great $10 investment. You too could be sharing in the membership beneﬁts!

Otter Co-op would like to welcome newly elected Board Member Brian Thomasson. Brian spent thirty-three years of his career as a school teacher – administrator, primarily in elementary schools in the Aldergrove area. Brian has been committed to the co-operative principles throughout his life. As a teenager his ﬁrst job outside the family farm was with the Surrey Co-op working in the Hardware Department. Brian has just retired from the Aldergrove Credit Union, having served thirty-eight years as a Director, including ﬁve years as President. Brian and his wife Laurie live on a hobby farm in Aldergrove where they raised their three children.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE We are well into the 93rd year of Otter Co-op existence and it is looking like another great year. Sales are up, the weather has been good and our team is set to enjoy another record year. Thanks to all our members who made last year our ﬁfth record year in a row. Without the support of our members and the hard work of our staff this would not be possible. I would like to thank all those members and guests who attended the recent Annual General Meeting of the Co-op. Hopefully it was informative and enjoyable for all. As usual we would like to have a much larger attendance at the AGM but those that attend do participate and their presence is appreciated. This year we had two of our Board members re-elected for a further three years. Susan Dodd and Larry Jantzen and a new face on the Board, Brian Thomasson, were elected to a three year term. We also had ﬁve other excellent candidates that were running for spots on the Board. Thank you to all the candidates for offering their service. A special thanks to Frank Hauzer who has served six years on the Otter Board and previously had served eight years on the Board of the Pitt Meadows Co-op, before the amalgamation with Otter. He has made many contributions and will be missed on the Board. Again this year Otter Co-op awarded ten scholarships to deserving recipients. Eight went to this year’s grade twelve graduates and two were for mature applications. This is just one of many great community services that are made possible by your continued and increased support of our many divisions. This past year Otter Co-op contributed over $145,000 to community groups. We can all be proud to belong to, and support, an organization that takes its responsibility to its community that seriously.

Third Annual Country Car Show at Otter Co-op This year’s car show was a one day event (Sunday, April 26) and was a huge success. The Central Fraser Valley Chapter V.C.C.C. who sponsors the show was extremely pleased with well over 200 entries. We hope to see everyone again in 2016!

1st Annual Kids’ Club /Mother’s Day Craft Day The kids had a great time making Mom a picture frame while she got to spend some time shopping. We took the child’s photo, had it developed in the store and then put it in their frame. Today is an opportunity to celebrate record breaking sales for our 2014 year end. This is our 5th year in a row of record sales, and I look forward to the continued bright future of our co-operative. I’d like to thank you for your support, commitment and dedication to Otter over the past year. In today’s economic and social turbulence, we remained stable and growing. It is through the co-operation and dedication of our board, employee team, and members that has resulted in another successful year for our organization. Strong community support from our members grew Otter Co-op to record sales of $183,866,549; an increase of 6.9% over the previous year. Bottom line savings ended the year at $5,778,717, with several extraordinary items that account for the negative variance from our previous year. Some of these include increased depreciation expense for the 3 new sites that were opened in 2014, a special payment of $500,000 towards the under-funded Otter Co-op Defined Pension, and the significant losses we experienced at the end of our fiscal year with the rapidly falling petroleum pricing and the margin losses we experienced on fuel we owned throughout that period. From our bottom line of $5.7 million, the board of directors has approved to allocate $4.4 million of the savings back to you, our members. That is the value of our co-operation together, and a major point of differentiation in our business model, returning our profits back to you, our owners. Some division results include our food sales experiencing a 2.6% increase from the previous year. Our pharmacy division experienced an increase in sales of 3.2%. General merchandise, which includes our hardware and family fashions at the Retail Centre, as well as sales of Hardware at our Pitt Meadows location, experienced an increase of 3.4% over the previous year. In feed, we ended the year with record bottom line results, despite our sales in this division decreasing by $1.6 million. Our bulk petroleum sales increased by $1.6 million, and our gas bar division experienced a sales increase of $11.1 million over the previous year, some of which is due to the addition of 3 new locations in mid to late 2014. Our team worked hard to maximize the market opportunities presented. A strong commitment to success and growth is evident from our Board of Directors, as the decisions and direction being planned and executed are not just for today, but to continue to take Otter Co-op well into the future. Some of these decisions include major upgrades at our feed mill here in Aldergrove, as well as a significant upgrade to the retail centre also planned for this year. The marketplace in which we operate continues to change, and our retail needs to continue to adapt and respond accordingly, so we continue to build on our strong past. Otter will continue to move forward to improve our assets, grow sales and services, and return earnings back to the communities in which we live, work and play. We as a team continue to grow our business, and improve our ability to give our members cash and equity, as well as set aside funds for the upgrading, replacement, and future development of Otter Co-op. The membership continues to directly benefit from these results, as we continue to give back a significant portion of our earnings through equity and cash back, as well as through the more than $145,000 we gave in donations to our communities. In order to effectively compete in today’s rapidly changing marketplace, we must continue to plan for the future. Every year the expectations of our membership increases. We need to determine what is essential, affordable, and providing a return to our over 50,000 members, and then set priorities for the prosperity of Otter Co-op. It is about continuing on a track record of fiscal responsibility balanced with sound marketing objectives, to ensure that we have continuous development and growth of our Co-op. We are just into 12 weeks of our 2015 fiscal year here at Otter, and so far results have been fantastic. We are 10.8% ahead of last year sales at this same time, and 5.6% ahead of our budgeted projections. Well done and hats off to our entire team here at the Co-op! It is especially rewarding to know that our loyal team including our board and members, remain the key in making Otter Co-op the growing, diverse, viable business it is today. We cannot do it without all of your dedication and loyalty. I sincerely thank you all for making the past year such a success, and we continue to look forward to the challenges and opportunities that the future holds for Otter Co-op!

food offered all day at Thunderbird Show Park. “It was an amazing day. We had a full house, with 250 guests,” said Foundation executive director Susan Cairns. The show jumping saw the best of the best from around North America compete in the qualifying round, said Cairns. The amazing cupcakes, some shaped like Granny Smith apples, others with vegetables displayed, were made by board member Lianna Valentine. “It’s a hobby of hers, and they were a big hit,” she said. The winner of diamond earrings is Kim Kruger. Her husband bought lucky ticket #36, based on how many years they have been married. The money raised

from this year’s gala will go to help feed the 3,000 Langley students who come to school hungry every day, said Cairns. “It’s hard to believe but it’s true,” she said. “Principals were calling me asking me to raise funds for our kids who are hungry. I started looking into it and an estimated 3,000 students come to school without breakfast and have no packed lunch.” The program is called Food for Thought with the focus on providing breakfast, lunch and snack for these students in need. The cost will be around $300,000 per year, said Cairns. “We are getting there towards our goal. But there is no way a kid can learn on an empty stomach.”

Sisters qualify for Summer Games Aldergrove Star

A pair of paddling sisters from the Fort Langley Canoe Club have qualified to represent Team BC at the Western Canada Summer Games this August. The Games will be held in Wood Buffalo, Alta. Lauryn Cheung and Meghan Cheung finished first and third, respectively, in both the K-1 (kayak single) 200m and K-1 500m events. It was an all-Langley battle for ninth place at the B.C. senior boys 2A provincial rugby championships. The Poppy Redhawks and the Mountain Eagles squared off on Saturday at Abbotsford’s Exhibition Park on the final day of the provincial championships, with the Redhawks prevailing 13-10. The Redhawks entered the 16-team tournament seeded ninth and the team won their final three games after an opening round loss, 26-19, to No. 8 Brentwood College. Poppy rebounded from that defeat to win a trio of narrow games, 17-15 over Smithers, 13-7 over LV Rogers and then the win over Mountain. Redhawks fourth at Fraser Valleys Aldergrove Star

The D.W. Poppy Redhawks came up short in their quest for a medal at the Fraser Valley championships. The Grade 8/9 girls soccer team lost 1-0 to Pitt Meadows in the bronze medal game on May 21. The Redhawks were the third seed at the Fraser Valley championships. And the team won their quarter-final game by a convincing 4-1 score over Queen Elizabeth. But in the semifinals, Poppy lost to Thomas Haney. Poppy had gone 5-0-1 during the regular season.

Loraine Yvonne (Sigalet) Davis Born Sept. 28, 1943 in Summerland and moved to the Sperling area of Langley in 1948, Loraine was the eldest of 7 children of Walter and Dagmar Sigalet. She was a dedicated sibling, helping to raise her brothers and sisters while working on the family farm. Loraine was an avid gardener, a fantastic cook, very creative, freely sharing her wealth of knowledge to anyone interested. Loraine passed away April 25, 2015 after a long illness. She is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Jim Davis, her step children Sid (Darlene), Carol, Janice (David), step grandchildren Ryan, Wesley, Laura, Rachel and Patrick.
