AFTER HOSPITAL TREATMENT . . .
No way to get home Island Health says it’s the patient’s responsibility AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
Released to the sidewalk at 3:30 a.m., a local senior’s recent trip to the hospital has her wondering about who is responsible for the wellbeing of patients. “I had a COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) attack and couldn’t breathe, so I called the ambulance and was taken to the hospital in Nanaimo (NRGH) in my PJs with nothing, not even my purse,” said a 67-year-old Parksville resident who didn’t want her name used. She said they got everything under control pretty quickly and released her at 3:30 a.m. “wrapped in a hospital blanket with no help, no idea how to get home.” With limited options at that time of the night and not wanting to disturb anyone, she ended up taking a taxi home for $85. It’s something she has heard has happened to others, including her neighbour. She said the taxi driver gave her a card for Granny Go Go (250-714-9715), but it wasn’t operating at that time of the night. “We are a companion service, we take people right from their bed and get them into their house and make sure they are comfortable,” said Granny Go Go owner Bonnie Brown. And they do it for around $30, but they don’t currently have an overnight driver. There are other services that transport people like Driving Miss Daisy (250937-8812) and some limited daytime services through the Society of Organized Services (SOS). Island Health confirms it’s the patient’s responsibility to get themselves home. “We do everything we can to ensure the patient gets home safely and with dignity, with particular focus on after-hours discharge of patients who may be vulnerable,” said IH spokesperson Valerie Wilson. Perfect day for Racing Around the Rocks AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
As predicted by the experts on the start boat, Lawn Dart of Nanaimo won the Schooner Cove Lasqueti Race Around the Rocks Saturday. They completed the course from the marina around the island and several other points and back in 15 hours and 20 minutes, a little over an hour ahead of number two, Dream Chaser. The Lasqueti race had three divi-
sions, with Runaway Girl taking division two in 18:02, followed by another local boat, Whale Song in second. Ducatti won division three in 18:22, with Schooner Cove’s Freewind placing third in the division. The day included a shorter, Race Around the Rocks course, which was won by Swish in 12 hours, 33 minutes. It was described as a perfect day for sailing with beautiful sunny, clear

Foster Park playground closed during renos
The Foster Park playground is closed to the public until early July (weather dependent) to facilitate resurfacing and the installation of new equipment, according to a news release from the City of Parksville. While the playground is closed during this time, Foster Park, the gazebo and park trails are still available for residents. A new softer surface, similar to the surface in the Ventureland Playground in the Community Park, will replace pea gravel and a wooden border. The playground will be slightly larger and a different configuration and three older style playground pieces will also be replaced. Formed in 1995, the Friends of Foster Park organization has provided thousands of volunteer hours to maintain and improve the park. The use of an excavator for this current work has been donated to the Friends of Foster Park by Highway 4 Rentals and a donation towards the project was received from Tire Stewardship BC. THIS WEEK IN PARKSVILLE QUALICUM BEACH
Gov’t caucus meeting here
JOHN HARDING
editor@pqbnews.com
Add host and tour guide to the list of duties this week for provincial cabinet minister and Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell. The B.C. Liberal caucus is meeting today through Thursday in the region. Stilwell said these retreats are a chance for the governing party to “look at our priorities and planning for the following year.” Stilwell, the minister of Social Development and Social Innovation, said between meetings she is going to lead some of her colleagues on tours of both the Oceanside Health Centre and the Society of Organized Services (SOS). “I really want to show (other MLAs) a successful social enterprise,” Stilwell said about the SOS. “It is unique in many ways in its extent and its success.” The caucus will meet Wednesday at Tigh-NaMara. There’s a B.C. Liberal Party event planned for a local golf course that evening, followed by a breakfast Thursday morning jointly hosted by the chambers of commerce for Parksville, Qualicum Beach and Nanaimo, where Premier Christy Clark will be the keynote speaker. Tickets for this chamber-members-only breakfast at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre were still available Monday morning — contact the chambers for more information.

Stilwell said having caucus members in Parksville Qualicum Beach could bring some focus to Mid-Island issues for the governing party. The B.C. Liberals hold 49 of the Legislature’s 85 seats. Only two of the 14 seats on Vancouver Island are occupied by B.C. Liberals (Stilwell and Comox’s Don McRae). “Certainly just having everyone here will show first-hand what the issues are,” said Stilwell. One possible topic of discussion for caucus this week would be the future of rail service on Vancouver Island. A government report obtained by Victoria radio station CFAX suggests the $15-$20 million allocated for track improvement by the Island Corridor Foundation is not enough to re-start passenger rail service safely. According to a story on CFAX’s website, the NDP MLA for Nanaimo-North Cowichan, Doug Routley, said his party wants to see an expert review committee established to create a business plan in a more accountable manner. Stilwell told The NEWS the rail issue for her has always been about safety. “I’ve always said from Day One that safety is the priority,” said Stilwell, who also added her view of what’s next for the ICF. “It’s getting to a point now the ICF is going to have to make some decisions on where they are going to go.” See EDITORIAL, page A10

Next week marks the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta. A charter agreed to by King John and a group of disgruntled barons on June 15, 1215, it is considered one of the most important legal documents in Western Civilization. Famous 20th century lawyer Lord Denning called it “the greatest constitutional document of all times — the foundation of the freedom of the individual against the arbitrary authority of the despot.” It was a big influence on the U.S. Constitution, which borrowed some passages almost word for word. “It was the foundation of the British Parliamentary system,” said Vancouver Island University history professor Timothy Lewis. He stressed that he doesn’t specialize in political or British history, but said “in general knowledge terms, it was the beginning of the monarchy beginning to cede power, first

to other nobles and eventually to the upper classes and the parliamentary system.” Fellow VIU history professor Cheryl Warsh said, “Given that the Magna Carta was the basis of modern democracy and the rule of law, and that so many countries in recent years have tried, and failed, to attain full democratic structures, it is as relevant as ever.”
The British Bobby restaurant in Parksville had intended to mark the occasion with the grand opening of their expanded space, but owner John St.John said they won’t be ready by then. St.John said with the large British population in the area and among their customers they may still try and mark the occasion with a menu special or something else.

A COLUMN ABOUT THE TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION’S REPORT RELEASED LAST WEEK
Leaders should not ignore the recommendations Qualicum’s Kim Recalma-Clutesi writes about her family’s personal connection to the horrors of residential schools (Editor’s note: We offer our thanks to former Qualicum First Nations elected chief Kim Reclama-Clutesi for sharing this local and personal perspective on the recent tabling of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report on June 2) KIM RECalMa-ClUTESI Special to The NEWS
“…Reconciliation is not an aboriginal problem, it is a Canadian problem. It involves all of us …” Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Chair, Justice Murray Sinclair, June 2, 2002. To mark the tabling of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report on June 2, I registered my great uncle John Recalma’s death on the TRC’s Missing Child or Unmarked Graves Report. This was not possible before the TRC process. My great uncle John died in the Port Alberni Indian Residential School on November 4, 1918. His cause of death was never recorded, his grave was never marked, he was never given a proper burial, his mother, (my great grandmother), Agnes, was never informed of his death. He was only 14 years old. About 40 years ago, my late father-in-law, George Clutesi, told me of John’s violent death. He was witness to John being beaten and thrown into the root cellar for speaking his language and when the root cellar door was opened a couple days later; John had died from his injuries. John is only one of an estimated 7,000 residential school students who never made it home. He is one of thousands who were left in unmarked graves on the grounds of 140 residential schools scattered across Canada. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission reported that the Canadian government knew as early as 1907 that the odds of dying in their churchrun, government-mandated Indian Residential School was one in 25, even higher than the one in 26 odds of dying in the Second World War. Even knowing these odds, the Indian Res-

idential Schools continued for another 89 years, incarcerating over 150,000 Aboriginal children in conditions void of minimal standards for human life. Seven generations faced horrific, terrifying and unspeakable abuse across Canada. The residential school story is not ancient history — five schools operated here, in the Vancouver Island region, within a few hours drive from Parksville Qualiucm Beach, from 1890 to 1983: • Alberni Residential School (1892-1973) Presbyterian and the United Church of Canada; • Kuper Island Residential School (1890-1975) Roman Catholic Church; • Christie (Kakawis) Residential School (1900-1983) Roman Catholic Church; • Ahousaht Residential School (1895-1940) Presbyte-
rian and the United Church of Canada; • St. Michael’s Residential School in Alert Bay (1890-1974) Anglican Church. The grooming and abuse of more than 150,000 Aboriginal children who attended residential schools was so complete that few spoke openly of the horror of their experiences. It was not until the courts mandated the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as part of the 2006 settlement for a class action suit brought on by residential school survivors, that the emotional dams broke and the tears flowed. My late father, Chief Buddy Recalma, spent his entire adult life working within the Native Brotherhood of B.C., the R.A.V.E.N. Society, the Southern Vancouver Island Tribal Federation, the U.B.C.I.C and the

Federal Liberal Party of Canada to correct these historic wrongs and to educate prime ministers, federal ministers, MPs, and senators since Pierre Trudeau’s time in office. I was witness to many of these conversations. Prime Minister Paul Martin’s Parliamentary Secretary for Aboriginal Affairs reminded me last night that Buddy was a main educator to the prime minister over the years. The Kelowna Accord was in part a result of Martin’s continued education by survivors like my father and his deep conviction that Canada has an obligation to correct this dark part of Canadian history. The Qualicum Beach Inn will be getting a new kind of guest this summer, all thanks to the “Bee Inn.” The facility will provide shelter for local bees during the summer months on the roof of the shed at the ‘QBI’. These bees do not form hives, but use holes left in materials to nest individually. Burt’s Bees, Paramount Hotel, Pollinator Partnership, and Sustainable. TO developed the pilot project for building bee inns last year in Toronto and have been expanding their inns across Canada ever since. The project started because the bee population has been in decline in recent years due to habitat loss and unlivable environments, Dowsett said. The inn is made of recycled material, in this case, the siding that wasn’t used in the QBI’s construction. “The outside of the structure is man-made waste” Paul Dowsett, principal architect for Sustainable. TO said. According to Dowsett, it only takes a day to build the entire inn and they’ve used resources like used shingles and

siding to build the inns. “What we’re trying to get people to understand is that preserving and re-establishing that habitat for the native pollinator habitat is important, and that there is such a thing as pollinator bees,” Dowsett said. The many different species of bees in the province will be able to use this inn, Dowsett said. The bees require eightinch holes to nest in that are drilled out of old wood. Mike Dziadyk, a buyer for Quality Foods, said he found the “Wild for Bees” project while in Toronto and was con-
nected with Burt’s Bees. “(It) was a good idea for the Qualicum Beach Inn,” Dziadyk said. The owners of Quality Foods also own the Qualicum Beach Inn. “It’s going to be eye-catching to humans, but then the stuff that’s inside, the natural waste, we want that to be attractive to the bees,” Dowsett said. “We need to preserve the habitat of these little creatures, otherwise we as humans are going to get hungry, very fast.” The bee inn can be seen around the back of the building on the roof of QBI’s shed.

RAISING MONEY FOR THE HEART AND STROKE FOUNDATION
Big bike equals big bucks The Coast Realty team in Qualicum Beach exceeded its goal of $10,000 with $11,602 CARLI BERRY news@pqbnews.com
The big bike was back for another year, raising money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Parksville and Qualicum Beach. The highest fundraising team on Vancouver Island this year will get to place an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) in a public location, according to Tina Lutz, special events coordinator for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. “I believe that the highest fundraising team will be here in Qualicum Beach,” Lutz said. The Coast Realty team in Qualicum Beach
exceeded their goal of $10,000 with $11,602. In total, Parksville raised $10,453 and Qualicum Beach raised $23,322. This year the Quality Foods team was riding for one of their own, who had suffered two strokes according to Ken Bowerman, store manager of QF. As of June 3, the Quality Foods employee was still at Royal Inland Hospital after surgery. “I think there’s a tremendous amount of stories … it never stops,” Bowerman said. “A lot of our cliental are at risk.” “That’s one of the mandates of the Heart and Stoke Foundation, is to save lives, promote recovery, and prevent disease,” Lutz said. The big bike rode around Parksville on June 2 and Qualicum Beach on June 3. The winner of the AED will be announced on July 15.

Island issues
I
t will be interesting to see if Island issues hit the radar of the the B.C. government caucus when it meets in Parksville Qualicum Beach this week. Politics being politics, it must be difficult for MLAs Michelle Stilwell and Don McRae to get Premier Christy Clark and their other B.C. Liberal colleagues to pay much attention to Island concerns. There are 14 MLAs based on Vancouver Island and only those two are part of the governing party. The premier and cabinet members like Stilwell will always talk a good game about the Liberals being responsible for, and interested in, the entirety of the province. History and political logic (is that an oxymoron?) suggest a governing party is more keen to take care of the regions that have shown their support at the ballot box. The caucus will meet at Tigh-Na-Mara on Wednesday and the premier is the keynote speaker at a breakfast Thursday morning at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre. When asked to describe what happens at these caucus meetings, a government communications staffer said “general planning.” It makes sense to applaud Stilwell for getting the caucus meetings here, but not really for the money all these MLAs, their staff and media will bring into town. While Tigh-Na-Mara, the PCCC and other firms here will be happy for the money, we don’t get all that excited about it for two reasons: it’s our money (tax dollars) they are spending; and there are ball and hockey tournaments that bring in the same amount of money every weekend here, dollars that are not from our pockets. That stated, there could be residual positive effects to having the caucus meetings here. MLAs who haven’t been here often are going to enjoy warm and sunny weather at a world-class resort on beaches (Rathtrevor, Parksville, Qualicum) that have no rival in the country. The MLAs and premier may begin to understand why it’s ridiculous to exclude this region from funding through the Resort Municipality Initiative. The MLAs and the premier might get a better idea why it’s vitally important to make B.C. Ferries more affordable. The MLAs and the premier might get a better understanding why they must do a better job, and provide more money, related to protecting our coast from any increased tanker traffic. They might all understand why it’s important to support, with tax dollars, the VIHA-mandated expansion of our water system. For the possibility these issues will get more than empty talk from the premier, cabinet and caucus, we owe our MLA some gratitude. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters Slow down
How fabulous that the bus service is active again. It’s also wonderful that it stops in front of the new Save-On-Foods store. Those that are objecting to this, should maybe slow down, try and understand why the bus exists and chill. In response about children running in front of traffic in the parking lot: parents, put your phones away, to have one hand on the grocery cart and the other hand holding the wee hand of the love of your life. Teach your kids the rules of how to understand about vehicles driving and parking and backing up in those same places you parked your vehicles. Help them to look around to be safe. But then there also those people (10-90 years old) with the mindset, from a Monty Python movie: “I’m just a pedestrian, and I don’t care.” Relax folks and please slow down. Isn’t this why we are all here?
“We do everything we can to make sure the patient gets home safely and with dignity.” valerie wilson, see story page a3
“root” causes of the inequities many Indigenous people live with, is essential for identifying appropriate ways to take action. At a community level it is important for all of us to think about how we need to respond to the ongoing legacy of residential schools playing out in our child welfare system and our prison system. How can we make a difference in our own communities? How can we support the work that needs to be done? How can we become an informed supporter and partner in this needed work? CMHA, Mid Island Branch is committed to “doing better” and standing alongside B.C.’s Aboriginal peoples. We challenge ourselves and call upon allied organizations in our community to study the Commission’s report and to learn from and work with Aboriginal peoples in creating brighter futures and mentally healthy communities for all. Solving poop
Quotable:
public debt
Re: Auren Ruvinsky’s NEWS story about bags of dog poop discarded in Parksville. After Bentley Dzogan’s photo of 71 discarded bags of dog waste off a popular sidewalk in Parksville, I expect to see a photo of Parksville’s municipality installing a garbage disposal can at this site. The dog owners did come up with bags and did do the pick-ups. I could hardly believe the article, when the solution is so obvious in both aspects of the word.
Colin Bartlett’s letter in support of the privatization of public debt (The NEWS, June 4) suggests that, because of the government’s huge deficits in the 1960s and early 70s, it allowed inflation to rise to nearly 13 per cent in order to handle the debt. To avoid worsening the problem, privatization was the answer and that has kept inflation low. Not quite. Canada’s federal debt had grown at between five and 10 per cent until 1975. For the next 12 years, after privatization, it grew at an sylvia Hofstetter average of over 20 per cent, taking the debt Qualicum Beach from around $20 billion in 1973 to $277 billion in 1987. Average inflation for the 24 years prior to 1974 was 2.8 per cent; for the 24 years Reconciliation after 1974 it was 5.4 per cent. The historic release of the Truth and RecToday the federal debt is over $600 bilonciliation Commission’s report is an im- lion. As he points out, North Dakota’s
dwindling population “placed little strain on (its) budgets,” while B.C.’s strong growth resulted in a “financial burden of infrastructure to service this growing population.” That aside, North Dakota, the only state with a public bank, is also the only state that has had a budget surplus every year since the banking crisis of 2008 and it has no debt. B.C. has had a surplus only for two of those six years and has a debt of $65 billion. And North Dakota is the only state that reduced individual income and property taxes by $400 million in 2009 and again in 2011 by a further $500 million. While the Bakken oil field has helped North Dakota, it certainly doesn’t explain why other oil producing states, such as Montana (with the greatest Bakken oil production), Alaska (producing twice as much oil as North Dakota) and Wyoming (extracting much more oil than North Dakota) have not fared as well. North Dakota’s ready access to credit through its public bank has made the difference and today other states, such as California, Washington, New Mexico and Arizona, are discussing the creation of their own public banks. In Canada, we already have our own public bank, the Bank of Canada. It’s time we returned to using the bank for the benefit of all. neil dawe Parksville
take my couch After recently acquiring a new couch and love seat set for our home, my wife and I decided to try to give our existing ones (still in fine shape if not mint condition) away. After contacting all the social agencies we could identify, as well as several churches, we could find no one who was willing to take the furnishings off our hands, or identify persons we could convey them to directly. Finally, after more than a week, in utter frustration, we delivered them to the dump, which saddened us greatly. There is something very wrong with this picture. We keep hearing and reading about the number of poor working families and low income seniors in the Oceanside area and yet one cannot help but get the impression that convenience and (in at least one instance) concerns about “profit potential” get in the way of genuinely reaching those in need. I think some of our local social agencies need to take a hard look in the mirror. BruCe Healy Parksville

Explore Parksville with Interactive Map Residents can now explore Parksville using our updated web-based interactive mapping application. We are pleased to provide the public with this newer geographic information system (GIS) tool. The ParksvilleMAP provides a variety of options and information for you to search, view or print maps. Data available includes: • Property information with property lines, address, legal descriptions, zoning regulations • Road information • Location of underground utilities (drainage, sanitary, water) • Zoning and Official Community Plan • Contour lines (1 metre) and aerial photos
ParksvilleMAP uses the latest technology for enhanced usability and minimum system requirements – Microsoft Windows or iOS. ParksvilleMAP may be accessed from all browsers from a desktop or mobile device. This system replaces outdated, ten-year old technology which required add-ons difficult for users. The cost of this new system which included an initial audit, software and implementation was about $50,000. Engineering uses GIS in many ways; to develop city-wide maps, infrastructure analysis and modeling and as a mobile application so crews can access and collect relevant data from the field. A step-by-step guide will help users navigate ParksvilleMAP available on the City’s website [Quicklinks/Map]. Please direct questions to gis@parksville.ca
Water Conservation – Level 3 Water Conservation Level 3 is now in effect for Parksville residents. Level 3 allows for odd numbered civic addresses to water on odd numbered days and even numbered civic addresses on even numbered days. Watering times are 6 am to 10 am and 6 pm to 10 pm for no more than one hour in duration per period with a maximum of two hours total allocated watering per day. Please see the website for details [Quicklinks/Water Conservation].
water supply this summer. Drought conditions, predictions of a warmer and drier summer and a record low snow pack in local mountains have resulted in the need to increase water use restrictions. We are experiencing higher than normal water demands and are having difficulties extracting water from our exiting surface water intake on the Englishman River. Rainfall in May 2015 was 5.6 millimetres compared to 39.0 millimetres for the same period in 2014.
Reduced water use at this time will help ensure a stable
Watering outside of the regulated period puts your water system and your neighbours, at risk. The largest demand on all water systems is lawn irrigation. Allowing your lawn to go brown would significantly reduce risks to your water supply and help ensure we can provide adequate supply to all residents.
Property Taxes Due July 2
Craig Street Upgrades
Tax notices for the current year were mailed in May. Contact the City’s property tax department (250 954-4653) if you did not receive your notice. Prior to July 2, residents must claim the Northern and Rural Home Owner Grant by bringing the completed application to City Hall or by claiming the grant online [Online Services]. Home owner grant applications must be completed each year that you are eligible. If the July 2 deadline is not met, your property tax account will have an outstanding balance and receive an immediate 5% penalty.
The Craig Street work scheduled to start tomorrow includes planned pedestrian upgrades and road resurfacing from Island Highway 19A to Hirst Avenue. This work will include the replacement of all existing exposed aggregate concrete wheelchair and driveway ramps to City standards, installation of a new crosswalk and wheelchair ramp at Middleton and Craig (adjacent to the Coastal Community Credit Union driveway) and the complete resurfacing and remarking of the roadway.
It’s Easy to View Accounts Online Homeowners and businesses may access their municipal accounts from the City’s website [Online Services]. With MyCity, a secure online service, customers may view previous billings, monitor utility consumption and claim the homeowner grant. MyCity supports licences, property tax and utility accounts. Customers may set up a profile and register each account using the folio or account number and access code included on a notice or bill.
Permissive Tax Exemptions Under the provisions of the Community Charter, Council may exempt land and/or improvements from municipal property taxes for the next calendar year, subject to certain requirements which in general, restrict exemption to nonprofit organizations using the lands for specific non-profit purposes. Deadline for application is noon, June 30. Details, application form and policy may be obtained from City Hall or from the website [Public Notices].
Pedestrian upgrades will significantly improve the delineation between the level sidewalk and wheelchair and driveway ramps for the vision impaired as well as improved access safety for mobility challenged. These upgrades are in line with the pedestrian safety recommendations provided by the Municipal Insurance Association of BC specifically for the City of Parksville. Work should be substantially complete within two weeks (weather permitting) and the City has taken into consideration the Craig Street market requirements. Work crews will do their best to maintain safe access to all properties; however, some minor delays should be expected.
Foster Park Playground Closed for Upgrades The Foster Park playground will be closed to the public from June 8 until early July (weather dependent) to facilitate resurfacing and the installation of new equipment. While the playground is closed, Foster Park, the gazebo and park trails are still available to residents. A new softer surface, similar to the surface in the Ventureland Playground in the Community Park, will replace pea gravel and a wooden border. The playground will be slightly larger with a different configuration and three older style playground pieces will also be replaced.

BUSINESS PROFILE
QF’s Frank Trozzo certainly knows his cheese Major cheese company Saputo gave him his own label for a double cream brie CARLI BERRY news@pqbnews.com
Cheese is such a big part of Frank Trozzo’s life that he’s even had a cheese named after him. Saputo unveiled on Mar. 10 at Qualicum Foods that Trozzo would be getting his very own label of cheese, known as Frank’s Selection of double cream brie cheese. The label was created just for him and features his name and face on the package. “It came as a surprise,” Trozzo said. Frank’s double cream brie cheese comes from Quebec and is rich and creamy in texture, “like butter,” Trozzo said. The cheese is best served by itself, with fruit, on a non-flavoured cracker or with sun-dried tomato and pesto. Trozzo said he’s been in the grocery business for 34 years and in the cheese business for nearly 30 years at the Qua-
licum Beach store. Working in cheese for so long has made Trozzo an expert. He said “he does a lot of the cheese buying” for QF and labeled himself as a cheese merchandiser. Trozzo said he got his start in a SuperValu store, in the dairy department. He’s even made his own cheese before. Trozzo made a ricotta, with whole milk, vinegar, and lemon. But it’s not the cheese making that’s earned him the title “Garde et Juré” or Guard Juror of the International Cheese Guild. “It’s a passion, it’s a love,” Trozzo said. “I love cheese.” You can see Trozzo working at the QF in Qualicum when he’s not traveling the island, buying cheese. On June 4, QF’s Appy Hour Special on Vancouver Island featured Frank’s Selection of double cream brie cheese. The brie isn’t going to be the only cheese available from Frank’s label either. According to Trozzo more cheese is being tested right now. “We try to do our best to get really good cheeses,” Trozzo said. Always serve your cheese at room temperature, never from fridge temperature, Trozzo said, as he compared cheese to “a fine wine.”

Don’t spend golden years worrying about money What steps do you have to take when you start withdrawing from your investments instead of contributing and growing your investments? Most people spend the majority of their life accumulating and growing wealth; it takes a change in investment philosophy to go from gathering and growing your assets to distributing and preserving your assets. You may require a monthly income in your retirement or a lump sum for renovations, travel, a new vehicle or a charitable donation. It is very important that you know how much income you will need, what are your various sources of income, in what order to draw upon your different resources, and the tax implications. For example, you may choose to draw more from your RRIF in a given year, but, if OAS is clawed back because of the increase in your income for the year, you may not really be any further ahead. New folk trio tests water with local show
Qualicum Beach is the only Canadian stop on short tour Jessica skelton reporter@pqbnews.com
Qualicum Beach will soon be host to another first. Folk musicians Emma Beaton, Blair McMillan and David Moss will make a stop in town on June 25 as part of their first ever tour as a trio. “I’m looking forward to it,” said Beaton. Nashville-based Beaton and McMillan, who often play music together, first met Moss in Brooklyn, and while Beaton said Moss has been “a friend of ours for a good while,” the trio never have not the opportunity to join forces until now. “It will be fun to finally play some music together,” said Beaton. The trio may be impromptu, but nobody seems to be worried. After all, each member is an accomplished musician in his or her own right. According to a news release for the show, Moss was the 2011 NewFolk songwriting competition winner, has toured with Anais Mitchell’s Hadestown and has had songs featured on Democracy Now! His music has also been included on the Ruach 5771 compilation CD and last year he released his first album Songs for Willoughby. Beaton, who hails from Qualicum Beach, won the Canadian Folk Music Award’s young performer of the year at 18 years old and was nominated for tradi-

tional vocalist of the year two years later for her self-titled debut record with Nic Gareiss. With the progressive stringband outfit Joy Kills Sorrow, she recorded two full-length albums and an EP. She’s also
appeared on PBS, NPR’s Mountain Stage and A Prairie Home Companion, STV (Scottish Television) and more. Finally, Scottish-born McMillan has been working as a professional musician
since the age of 14. He has worked extensively as a freelance drummer, including with Rachel Sermanni and Findlay Napier. While playing with pop singer/songwriter Katie Sutherland, McMillan appeared on BBC television and opened for Sir Elton John on a number of stadium shows in the UK. Although he still works extensively with other artists, McMillan will release his debut solo album just before heads on this latest tour. Together, Beaton said the trio plans to play “a little bit of each of our songs.” While a detailed set list has yet to be penned, she said the audience can expect traditional and original “singer-songer folk music.” On the instrumentation side of things, Beaton said she will be on vocals, cello and banjo; McMillan will be on guitar, vocal and drums; and Moss will be on guitar, vocal and cello. “We all know each other’s music well,” she added, saying that this will allow each of the musicians to add their own flair to the songs and create something unique to the trio. As for when you might be able to see this trio perform again, or if you’ll see a record produced, Beaton said she doesn’t know what the future holds. So far, this tour (in which Qualicum is the only Canadian stop) is all they have planned. The trio will play on June 25 at 384 Mant Road in Qualicum Beach. Doors will open at 7 p.m., with the music following at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the evening are $20 and can be purchased from Joyce and John Beaton at 250-752-1162 or e-mail: beatonqualicum@gmail.com.

enriched training opportunities for professionally minded teen dancers, Dancestreams brings together talented teens from communities throughout Vancouver Island. Every Sunday, September to May, these dedicated and hard-working young people come together in a cen-

pany is created by both emerging and established professionals from all over North America. Performance of these new works is key to the success of the company. Each spring, the dancers tour throughout the Vancouver Island region and occasionally further afield. In the past, Dan-

The Lion The Bear The Fox are back in town. The popular three-piece roots rock group will once again play at the Quality Resort Bayside on June 13. This is the third straight year the band has played the venue in a concert presented by Arbutus Events. “It’s a really good show,” said Megan Olsen of Arbutus Events. “They always sell out.” Earlier this year, The Lion The Bear The Fox also presented a full set at the Errington Hall. During that well-attended evening, the group performed songs from their 2013 EP We’d Be Good Men and from their upcoming full-length, self-titled album. A release date for this self-produced record has
not yet been announced. Last month, Christopher Arruda (aka The Lion) also made a solo appearance in Parksville to open for John Mann of Spirit of The West. Tickets to this weekend’s show are $20 in advance and can be purchased at the Quality Resort Bayside and Soak Essentials in Parksville, ReVived Vintage in Qualicum Beach and online at arbutusevents.ca. You can also purchase tickets at the door for $25. Doors to the concert open at 7:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8:30 p.m. CONTEST To win a pair of tickets to this Friday’s show, please email reporter@pqbnews.com with “The Lion The Bear The Fox” in the subject line by end of day on Thursday, June 11. Your name and phone number must be included to be eligible.
Alumni have gone on to successful dance careers CONTiNuEd From PAge A25
Dancestreams offers serious dance students the opportunity to work with dancers with similar focus and determination in a situation where they can learn as much from each other as from the guest teachers and artistic staff. Many of the company’s alumni have gone on to successful careers in professional dance, continuing their studies with a multitude of performing companies and at worldclass institutions such as Julliard.
If you’d like to get involved, this weekend’s audition will take the form of a class. Royals playing well, but not rewarded Parksville team has lost by less than two runs in three of last four games played T yson Taylor
sports@pqbnews.com
The Quality Foods Parksville Royals dropped their double-header this weekend to the Whalley Chiefs at home, losing 3-2 and 6-4 under the sun on Saturday. Both games were closely contested, which has been a theme for the Royals this season. In the four games they played over the last two weeks against the Chiefs, three were decided by two runs or less. While staying in the game, the Royals have had trouble finding wins. “We’re right there with every game,” head coach Dave Wallace said. “This weekend was a perfect example of that. We played Whalley close and had chances to win both games. As a team, we just need to start feeling a little more confident out there.” “Our pitching has been good, our defense has been good too, and we just need those bats to come around now. Once one guy starts to hit the ball well, the rest of the team takes notice and they start to feel confidence too from seeing that.” Owen Kelly pitched six innings in game one, giving up two runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts.

Owen Kelly and the Quality Foods Parksville Royals dropped two close games this weekend against the Whalley Chiefs at home. The Royals lost 3-2 and 6-4 under beautiful conditions in Parksville.
Hayden Scheck came on in relief and gave up one run in one inning of work, taking the loss in game one. Colton Tuka got the start for the Royals in game two, pitching
five innings and giving up three runs while striking out five. Zack Senay would come on to finish the game for the Royals, throwing two innings and giving up two runs.
Errington’s Liam Ballance cranked his first home run of the season in the second game of the double-header, hitting it into orbit. It wasn’t enough for the Royals, however, as they
would drop game two by a score of 6-4. “It’s all about confidence,” Wallace said. “Hitting a baseball is a very difficult thing and lots of it is in between the ears. Our team hasn’t hit the ball well so far this season and with that happening, it’s very easy for players to get down.” “But seeing Liam hit a ball the way he did, and he’ll be the first to let you know he’s been struggling, that gives a kid confidence. So we just need to have a little more belief in ourselves when it comes to hitting the ball and in time, it’s going to turn around.” The Royals now have a busy week ahead as they’ll play five games, starting Wednesday night against the Nanaimo Pirates at Serauxmen Stadium in Nanaimo. Saturday the Royals will travel to Delta to take on the North Delta Blue Jays for a double-header. On Sunday, it’s off to Coquitlam to take on the Coquitlam Reds, another double-header. “It’s going to be busy,” Wallace said. “Lots of playing time for everyone, especially being that it’s graduation season. We’ll have players in and out of the lineup all week, so we’re going to see lots of kids get lots of playing time.”

Generals building future leadership skills T yson Taylor

The Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals’ spring camp has wrapped up, with over 50 hopefuls getting a first hand look at the organization and new head coach Brad Knight. It was a well-received weekend, according to general manager Rob Gaudreault, who was taking part in his first camp in his new position. He was happy with the turnout and quality of the players, noting they took to the ice with great enthusiasm to go along with Knight’s fresh approach. “It was a good camp,” Gaudreault said. “Brad had everything figured out in terms of what he wanted to see out there on the ice and ran everything the way he wanted to run it.” “It wasn’t treated so much like a showcase camp, but more like regular
practices we would hold during the season. I think that really set the tone for the weekend with all the players, they saw what they were in for and really had to step up to show what they could do.” Gaudreault said there was lots of positive feedback, from players and their families. It’s nothing but encouraging for the GM, who knows the importance of getting things started on the right foot. “We need to show from day one just what we want to do with this team,” Gaudreault said. “We know what sort of team we want to put out there on the ice and we feel that we’re going to have no problems building that team.” “It starts with camp here, getting to know the players, seeing what they can do out on the ice. From there, we have to keep on working away, finding
players that are going to fit the mold of what we want our team to be and building our team to have the success we know we can have.” Anywhere from 14 to 18 Gens from last season will return. “It’s great to see those guys out here,” Gaudreault said. “After all that’s happened, to see them come back and want to be part of what’s going on here is nothing but positive. You can see the improvement in their games and it’s showing both on the ice and off the ice.” “We’ve had lots of calls about players from last season from teams all over the place and it’s very encouraging. With Brad as our coach, that’s only going to continue to build in the right direction. He’s a great coach with a great vision and great drive to succeed and those qualities have a strong, positive impact on players that want to get better.”

It was a beautiful day for the beautiful game on the Kwalikum Secondary School soccer field as the Shady Rest Eagles and Oak Bay Old Boys battled it out for the Manly Cup. Both teams were ready for the challenges ahead, both on the field against one another and from the hot weather conditions as well, as the 30th installment of the Manly Cup played out on the pitch at KSS. In the end, it was the Eagles earning the 2-1 victory as they came from behind to capture the Manly Cup. Oak Bay took the lead in the first half, setting the stage for an Eagles comeback in the

second half. Dave Flooker tied the game 1-1 when he put home a deflected shot by Keith Watson, who made a great run to set up the scoring chance for the Eagles. Not long after, Watson was at it again, this time setting up Stuart Gray with a through ball that Gray took possession of and promptly struck a looping shot into the far corner behind the Old Boys keeper. The Eagles were under pressure for the remainder of the game but they managed to hold on for the win. Shady Rest Eagles keeper, Ian Miller, was voted the Man of the Match.

We get the ball rolling by looking at the very popular Arrowsmith G. & C.C., one of my favourite places to golf and eat. With Bill Sr. joining Myra and me for dinner at Micky J’s and 18 holes of golf a few nights ago I can happily report that the new menu provided by recently hired Chef Jack Whitfield will be very successful. I have a new favourite: The Salmon Burger. After devouring that, I also enjoyed half of Dad’s BLT and a quarter of Myra’s Chicken Quesadilla. OK, I was a little hungry. If you ever apply to work at Arrowsmith, put “loves to smile” and “ happy go lucky” on your resume because that must be what Maureen in the pro shop put. These for me are two of the key customer service traits that I look for, and they can make or break your golfing experience. It helped make ours. What also helped was seeing the course full of all sorts of golfers, foursomes

New Head Pro 2015 New to Arrowsmith and a very positive addition to the team is Head Professional
Gary Schilds. Gary has had a great career at many noted courses including Furry Creek, Glacier Greens and Mayfair Lakes to name a few. Gary’s position in the golf department is very important to Arrowsmith and he will be pleased to be your go-to guy when it comes to lessons and clinics for all ages and levels. He can also regale you with stories of golf outings he has had with John Daly, Mike Wier and Moe Norman. Myra told me that three of her new lady golfing companions were discussing golf lessons when Judie stated that taking lessons from Gary was a “must” as he was not only thorough, patient and knowledgeable but he dedicated a portion of the lesson to reviewing in detail,
the points of the previous lesson. Even if you don’t have time for a full round, head up there for a bite to eat and hit a bucket of balls or maybe a bucket of beer. The night we were there a group of 16 folks were having some kind of family party on the deck as well. In the lounge it was music trivia night. From the 18th green amidst the laughter from the group on the deck, I swear I could hear the DJ say that the answer was “Only the Lonely” which kind of reminds me of how I feel when I am off in the trees looking for my ball. Stay in touch and as always “Good golfing”. Sincerely, “Diamond Bill”

Working hard to help those struggling with the disease AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
Beth Alden is used to conquering challenges, but she’s facing her toughest in the Victoria Half Ironman in honour of her father Jim Alden. “He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s six year ago,” she said. “He worked hard all his whole life from the age of 12 to 72 to retire, and that’s his parting gift,” she said of the diagnosis six years ago. And so she set an ambitious goal to raise $25,000 and do the 1.9 km swim, 86 km bike and 20 km run around Victoria on June 14. “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but everytime I want to quit I just think of dad, he hasn’t quit, it’s hard for him to put sentences together, he hasn’t given up, so I keep training,” she said. She has spent six months on a rigorous training schedule, including a lot of time in the pool which she said she hated at first. “I don’t ask people for help easily but I am asking now,” she said, lavishing praise on the work of Alzheimer B.C.,
