Motorboat ban under consideration Shuswap River: Public can offer input on ban, limits on the size of boat engines. By Richard Rolke BlaCk PrEss
Boaters could be left high and dry on parts of the Shuswap River and that is generating debate. The Regional District of the North Okanagan is currently seeking feedback on proposed regulations for the river, including no motorized vessels from south Mabel
Lake upstream to Shuswap Falls and from Trinity Valley Road upstream to the eastern end of Skookumchuck Rapids Park. “The entire process has been biased,” said Mike Steiner, who owns 1,500 feet of riverfront in Mara. “RDNO has neglected its responsibilities to users and stakeholders.” In 2010, the regional district initiated a process to develop a Shus-
wap River Watershed Sustainability Plan, and Steiner says key stakeholders were absent. “It specifically excluded advocates from the boating community, sport fishermen and certain businesses who rely on motorized use of the river and riverfront landowners who boat,” he said. However, the process is being defended by the Lower Shuswap

Stewardship Society. “The plan was a lengthy process with lots of consultation and once concerns were identified, three working groups were formed (to develop possible strategies),” said Jean Clark, with LSSS. “In public meetings, there were hundreds of concerns about boats. See Proposal on page 2

Proposal ‘not a done deal’ Continued from front It became one of the big issues on the river.” In terms of specific rules about restricting motorized boats, Clark insists now is the time for consultation. “Some think it’s a done deal, but it’s not.” An open house will be held at the Enderby Drill Hall, Wednesday, June 10 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and there will be one at the Mabel Lake Community Hall (Lumby end), Thursday, June 11 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Surveys can also be completed online at www.rdno.ca/boating and they will be mailed to property owners adjoining the river in the affected areas.
“Once we get the feedback and look at the level of support and concerns, then there will be a decision made on whether we continue pursuing regulations or if we drop the matter,” said Anna Page, RDNO sustainability co-ordinator. The ultimate decision on restrictions is made by Transport Canada. Page says the goal of the proposed rules is to improve recreational safety, reduce bank erosion, reduce disturbance to salmon spawning grounds and minimize conflicts between river users. “Community groups and businesses have raised concerns about boats.” While some sec-
tions of the river could see motorized boats banned, it’s proposed that there be a vessel engine size limit of 10 horsepower from Mara Lake upstream to Trinity Valley Road. Herman Halvorson, RDNO’s rural Enderby director, says he is being lobbied by those who want motorized boats on the river and those who don’t. “I’m completely open to the process and we will deal with it in a proper fashion. I am neutral,” he said. A similar response is also coming from Greg McCune, Enderby director. “We’re encouraging people not to jump to conclusions but to fill out the survey,” he said.

Sunnybrae Hall to get energy upgrade By Barb Brouwer
MARKET NEWS STAff
Gas-powered upgrades are coming to Sunnybrae Hall. Columbia Shuswap Regional District directors unanimously approved $36,900 including applicable taxes from gas tax funds for energy-efficient upgrades in heating, air conditioning and other efficiencies. Renovations planned for the hall were approved to the tune of $30,635 last summer but were put on hold following complaints from former hall association members. “Some members of the public alleged there was something amok there,” said CSRD financial manager Jodi Kooistra. “In working with them over the past nine months, they have done a lot of work, the proposal is fully documented and staff supports this.” Kooistra explained that an independent energy evaluation of the hall has been completed and the association has received quotes for required energy-efficient upgrades. Sunnybrae Community Association presi-
dent Sharda MurrayKieken appeared at the May 22 meeting of the CSRD board, where she explained the current heating system fails to deliver adequate heat and, as a result, the exterior perimeter of the building remains cold. As well, Murray Kieken said the airintake and duct work are poorly designed, inefficient and badly located for the size of the space, factors that cause the furnace to be disturbingly noisy and to run continuously. “Based on the Energy Efficiency Evaluation Report carried out by ecoEnergy in March 2015 and our exhaustive discussions with three HVAC contractors, we now have a clear understanding of three possible mechanical approaches to reduce our energy consumption and increase the efficiency,” said Murray-Kieken. “Our intention is to reduce our carbon footprint and address the numerous shortcomings of the existing heating/ac systems.” Area C South Shuswap director Paul Demenok was supportive of the second applica-
tion for funds from his community works fund. “You have done a terrific lot of work,” he said, addressing Murray-Kieken. “I think you made review of an application much easier, almost a model of how gas tax applications should be submitted.” Renovations will include replacing the existing heating system and redesigning the ducting, replacing the air conditioning unit, upgrading insulation and air sealing and up-

grading windows and doors. The total project cost is anticipated to be $36,900 including applicable taxes. “These upgrades will make the hall more energy efficient for community functions and they qualify for gas tax funding,” said Kooistra in her report to the board. “The association will ensure application of Community Works Funds (CWF) will only be applied to eligible gas tax projects in accordance with the CWF Agreement.”

Planning for all emergencies By Barb Brouwer
MARKET NEWS STAFF
Be Prepared is not just a Boy Scout motto. Weather the weather brings heavy rains and flooding or hot, dry winds that elevate wildfire risk, the Shuswap Emergency Program has a plan for that. “The Wildfire Management Branch is suggesting if we don’t get any rains in June, there’s a greater than average risk of wildfires,” says Cliff Doherty Columbia Shuswap Regional District’s emergency program co-ordinator. The Shuswap Emergency Program (SEP) operates in the City of Salmon Arm, District of Sicamous and electoral areas of CSRD that surround Shuswap Lake – South Shuswap, Falkland/Salmon Valley/Ranchero and North Shuswap. “Our main role is not only responding when something happens, but also emergency preparedness,” he says. “Our biggest role is activation of an emergency centre.” In the event an emergency operations centre (EOC) is activated, there are roles for volunteers and government staff, along with police, fire and ambulance who will go to emergency
centre to help support people working there. “Our greatest effort is setting up a declaration of a state of local emergency and doing up the paperwork for an evacuation order,” says Doherty. “That’s the high end of what we do. At the low end, it could be arranging portable toilets or barricade – whatever the site requires.” Emergency preparedness is another role SEP plays. “I really think there is a need for the public to be better prepared,” he says. “For our part, the emergency program is right now exercising and training our staff just in case we need to set up an EOC. SEP was in attendance at the Sicamous Safety Fair on the weekend and Doherty is very excited about a training exercise that will take place in Silver Creek on June 27 and will include Emergency Support Services (formerly Emergency Social Services) and CDART, the Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team. “The premise is people being evacuated with pets… we just want to hone and practise,” he says. An emergency evacuation course for the

n Cliff Doherty, the CSRD’s emergency program co-ordinator, helps plan the region’s response to a crisis. agencies and emergency program staff that would be involved in building an evacuation plan if needed will be held June 22. “SEP is very much aware of the areas around the lake that have one main road in and one main road out,” Doherty says. “Evacuation planning does include the other alternatives to move people away from the area if that main road is blocked.” For example, SEP officials have a 24-7 connection to the houseboat companies if that is a resource that is needed. A workshop for personal and neighbourhood preparedness will take place at 7 p.m.
June 9 at Shuswap Lake Estates. The workshop will last for about one hour, followed by another half-hour question-and-answer session. Another Neighoburhood Emergency Preparedness Program (NEPP) will take place at 7 p.m. at White Lake Community Hall on June 10. Doherty suggests interested citizens may find more information at the PreparedBC website. For example, the PreparedBC: Household Preparedness Guide has information on such things as building an emergency kit, gathering items and identifying a safe meeting place.

Film boosts region’s economy By Richard Rolke bLAcK preSS
A major motion picture with roots in the Shuswap and North Okanagan is being praised as an economic driver. Over the past three weeks, outdoor ads promoting Tomorrowland were tagged with, “Proudly Filmed in Beautiful B.C.” messaging. The custom creative appears on map stands, bus signs and transit shelters in various locations across the Greater Vancouver area. “Tomorrowland captures the natural beauty of our province while bringing to life the work and imagination of B.C.’s creative industry,” said Greg Kyllo, Shuswap MLA and parliamentary secretary, B.C. Jobs Plan.
“We are thankful to Disney for showcasing B.C. and our talented industry to the world. I look forward to seeing more and more of British Columbians’ work show up in the magic of Disney’s storytelling that resonates with so many kids, adults and families around the world, ” he added. Tomorrowland was shot in eight different B.C. cities, including Grindrod, Armstrong, Richmond, Surrey, Burnaby, Delta and Langley The filming of Tomorrowland supported more than 1,800 full-time jobs and was responsible for $91.9 million in direct production expenditure in the province. Between August 2013 and January 2014, the production engaged more than 1,100 vendors in 67 communities across B.C.

A sign of the sorry state of politics
Last week, federal Justice Minister Peter MacKay announced his intended departure from politics with Prime Minister Stephen Harper at his side. MacKay becomes the latest on a worrying list of Conservative cabinet ministers to head to potentially greener pastures in recent months. MacKay, rather than hint at lucrative opportunities in the private sector, instead focused on his family as the reason for departure. (A cynic might argue that the 49-year-old was partly motivated by about $1.3 million in pension benefits that he otherwise wouldn’t have been able to claim under new MP retirement rules passed in 2013. Those rules will mean all politicians elected after the next election must wait until age 65, up from age 55, before they can draw a pension.) But there is so much to say about the broken state of Canadian politics. The outcome of the Alberta election, if it foreshadows anything about the public’s mood towards the relentless Harper-Mulcair-Trudeau battle, reveals a country that perhaps has finally seen through the Conservative’s false claim that Canada will economically crumble if another party gains power. Perhaps MacKay is disillusioned, as many Canadians are, by Harper’s relentless agenda. Perhaps the minister senses that change is in the wind, a view held by many political strategists who understand that the Canadian public likely can’t stomach the rapid deviations on environmental and social policies whipped through Parliament under the guise of safety and economic viability. The public’s mood will remain cynical until the October election, and Harper cabinet dropouts like MacKay are simply adding fuel to that fire. - Saanich News

Kids can get ready for fishing fun
The water level in the lake is on the rise, the carp are in the bay and last weekend I saw a number of kids down at the end of the wharf with their fishing rods. All good signs for the upcoming 19th Annual Salmon Arm Kid’s Fishing Derby which will be held Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21 down at the wharf. Everything seems to be falling into place – as it usually does just prior to the derby. The organizers and volunteers pretty much know what needs to be done and have been going doing everything from putting up posters to organizing the trophies and prizes. There is, however, one thing that will be different this year. Due to circumstances beyond my control I won’t be able to be there. I’ve been working on this year’s derby since a few days after last year’s and now I can’t be there to watch all the fun and excitement. For the past 18 years I have looked forward to the derby – probably as much, if not more, than the kids. Each year, I have made my way down to the end of the
THE GREAT OUTDOORS James Murray wharf at 5 o’clock in the morning to help set up and spent the rest of the morning well, watching all the kids and their families having a good time together. The derby means a lot to me. I started the year after my father passed away, in his honour and as a way to show my gratitude for all the times he took us kids fishing. The way I see it, there are worse things (than fishing) that kids might do. The Annual Salmon Arm Kid’s Fishing Derby is open to all children 12 years of age and under. There is no cost to enter the derby. Registration takes place Sunday morning, beginning at 6 a.m., at the end of the wharf.
The only restrictions are that each child must be accompanied by an adult, and wear a life-jacket or PFD. Six certified lifeguards are on duty throughout the event. Some life-jackets are available for children who do not have one. Only coarse fish are eligible for trophies and prizes, and, fish must be caught and played by the child – an adult, however, can assist in netting a fish. An awards ceremony will take place immediately following the derby at the end of the wharf, where the trophies and major prizes will be handed out. The winner of the annual Kid’s Fishing Derby will receive the Salmon Arm Savings and Credit Union – W.J. (Bill) Murray Memorial Trophy, an IM-6 graphite rod-and-reel outfit, and they will get to take their whole family on an all-expensespaid weekend fishing trip to Beaver Lake Lodge, which will include accommodations, boat and motor, and $100 worth of groceries. Second- and third-place winners will receive rodand-reel outfits.
The lucky angler who lands the first fish of the derby will receive the Westside Stores Trophy, a rod-andreel outfit, and a $100 gift certificate from Westside Stores. Two anglers who catch fish closest to predetermined “secret weights” will have their names inscribed on the Canadian Tire Trophy and will each win a brand new, shiny mountain bike. The angler who manages to catch the most fish will receive the City of Salmon Arm Trophy, a rod-and-reel outfit and a one-year pass to the rec centre swimming pool. Second- and thirdplace winners will receive rod-and-reel outfits. As in previous years, there will be a parent appreciation draw prize. Adults receive one draw ticket for each child they register. At the award ceremony, one lucky person will win $300 worth of groceries from Askew’s Foods. I will truly miss being at this year’s Kid’s Fishing Derby. Then again, it’s never too early to start planning for next year’s derby.

Meet Morrie. He’s big, he’s fun and he’s happy and born with a smile on his face. Morrie is looking for a home where he can be someone’s best buddy. He is always ready to meet his friends. He likes most other dogs to play with, however, large unfixed males who want to challenge him would not be a good match. He is strong so is not a dog that children can walk. If you have a lot of experience with this breed and size of dog, come and meet him. However he really wants to be a part of an active sturdy family and not just an ego boost. 2430 - 10th Ave. SW • 250-832-7044 Mon. to Fri. • 7 am to 5:30 pm Sat. • 8 am to 5:30 pm Sun. • 9 am to 5 pm

Our ladies Consignment store opened July 1st 2014. We had always wanted to open a consignment store because the 7 sisters were always raiding each other’s closets, then finding we were just moving clothes back & forth between each other. Somehow, the supply of clothes never got smaller. Our tastes were so similar that we often found we had bought items in another town that were exactly the same. We have talked about this for years & when Janis, the principal owner, needed a career change after 29 years as a dental hygienist, we decided the time had come to do it! All seven of the sisters, as well as our mother, daughters & nieces have contributed to the store but only two of the sisters, Janis & Yvonne, are the owners of the store. Yvonne was retired but loved the idea of being involved as long as she did not have to give up her winters in Arizona. The support of the local community has been phenomenal & we thank all of them for being great customers as well as for consigning their clothes with us. Our motto is “We strive to provide ‘High quality clothing at an affordable price!’” The shop is located in Sorrento, #2 - 1255 Trans Canada Highway. Call us at 1-778-490-4744

INFORMATION DESIGNED TO PROMOTE AND ENHANCE YOUR WELLBEING
Take the ouch out of down-dogging How to prevent common yoga injuries (NC) Yoga has evolved into one of the hottest trends in physical activity as more than 21 million people are now downdogging across North America. They’re unrolling their mats in droves to take in yoga’s many health benefits, such as improved strength and flexibility plus reduced tension, anxiety, stress and pain. But it’s important to note that yoga, if performed incorrectly, can also at times cause injuries. Most yoga injuries develop gradually due to consistent over-stretching, misalignment and over-
doing poses. Common problem areas are lower back, wrists, knees, ribs, shoulders, elbows, hips and neck. The different poses, twists and raises can put strain on joints and muscles causing injuries over time. As with any physical exercise, the safest approach is to learn
how to practice and master the poses with the correct form and stay in touch with your body and its limitations. Here are some other basic guidelines to follow: • Warm up your body and mind with basic stretches and breathing to help prepare your body
for more challenging poses. • Go at your own pace and don’t try to do too much too soon by pushing your body beyond its limits. • Most importantly be mindful of your body throughout the session so you can be aware of any tightness or strains. • If you do get in-
jured, care for it as you would any other sports injury and look for pain and swelling relief with a topical medicine such as Arnicare gel or cream to help relieve muscle and joint pain and ease resorption of swelling and bruising. Well known in the yoga community, the topical is used for neck, back, shoulder and leg muscle pain, plus swelling and bruising. Keep in mind, these homeopathic medicines may not be right for everyone. Always read and follow the label. More information on treating pain can be found at www.boiron.ca. www.newscanada.com

Five ways to protect your family’s skin (NC) Summer is finally here. But after months of dark, dreary days, chances are you may need a refresher in how to keep your family sun-safe. Banana Boat sun care has partnered with dermatologist Dr. Julia Carroll to recommend these five ways to protect your family’s skin this summer: • Keep it handy - Sunscreen should be applied before heading outdoors, so keep a bottle handy on the
kitchen counter, or the front hall of your house, to make this easier to remember. Don’t forget your ears, lips, shoulders and nose. • You always need it - Even if you are only planning to drive from one indoor location to another, UVA rays can penetrate glass so get in the habit of applying sunscreen as part of your family’s morning routine, just like brushing your teeth! • Limit exposure - The sun’s rays are strongest be-
tween 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., so although sunscreen is an excellent defense, take extra precaution during this time, including limiting sun exposure (seek shade or use an umbrella) and wearing a hat and protective clothing. • Be generous - Adults should use about one ounce or 30mL of sunscreen (about the size of a golf ball) each time they apply sunscreen. • Choose your product With many product options,
from sport-specific to general protection, pick the one that suits your activity best. For instance, Banana Boat SunComfort Sunscreen spray helps relieve dryness caused by sun, chlorine and water. It also easily allows you to brush sand off your sunscreen-covered skin after time spent at the beach. For more daily sun protection tips, visit: www.bananaboat.ca

Chamber earns comeback award The South Shuswap Chamber of Commerce has been given a special award Last Thursday, chamber general manager Karen Brown received a phone call asking her to fly up to Prince George to receive an award in honour of its work and diligence in revitalizing the chamber. Brown accepted the award on behalf of the board of directors from BC Chamber executive James Belsheim, president of Neptune Terminals, who sponsored the award. Both outgoing president John Winter and Belsheim had high praise for the chamber at the AGM’s welcome dinner. The chamber had been nominated by its membership for BC Chamber of the Year and, although that distinction went to Kelowna, Belsheim and others applauded the South Shuswap chamber’s accomplishments. They told the more than 300 delegates that the South Shuswap Chamber, under a new board of directors and administration, had taken a chamber on hiatus with no members to one of more than 100 members in 16 months. Referring to it as a
Phoenix rising from the ashes, the recognition was dubbed The Comeback Award for 2015. As well, the South Shuswap Chamber was praised for its ‘Chamber of Change’ working model. It is the only virtual chamber in the province, haven given up a chamber office during the revitalization. “Business owners don’t have time in their day to drop everything and visit the chamber office, so we choose to go to them,” says Brown. Board meetings are held at various businesses in the community, giving board members a keen awareness of the businesses and their needs. “Our model facilitates more face-to-face engagement, which I feel the membership appreciates,” says Brown. “And it certainly fosters more networking and member-to-member opportunities that are key to business success.” Brown thanked the Kamloops and Salmon Arm chambers of commerce for their mentorship, and her board of directors, who work tirelessly as volunteers to see the chamber succeed.

A few tips for choosing a shade tree Just sitting in the shade of a tree for a few moments is enough to cool off and relax. A well-placed shade tree is perfect for protecting you from the hot summer sun that beams into your yard every day. However, you need to know how to choose the right one for your terrain and tastes. Here are some tips to help you. Before going to a garden centre, decide where you want to plant your shade tree. How many hours of sunshine will it get every day? What is the soil type? Are there power lines close by? A building? A pool? The answers to these questions will help you choose the perfect tree, which is one that will be able to reach its full potential in your yard’s environment.
Now imagine your tree at maturity. How tall will it be? Be careful; you could regret your choice if you plant a tree that shades your entire yard when it’s fully grown. On the other hand, planting a shrub may not provide enough shade. Take the time to browse through some gardening magazines to
find shade trees that you like. Feel free to talk to garden centre experts to get the best advice. Bring pictures of your yard and tell them what you want and expect. Above all, avoid buying on the spur of the moment. A shade tree should be chosen carefully if you want to take advantage of its full potential.
Just sitting in the shade of a tree for a moment is enough to cool off and relax.

Marina variance rejected By Barb Brouwer
MARKET NEWS STAFF
Despite pleas for approval by Area F director Larry Morgan, a request for a development variance permit for Captain’s Village Marina was rejected. Columbia Shuswap Regional District directors pondered the matter at the May 21 board meeting and followed a staff recommendation when it came time to vote. The applicant was proposing to build a large indoor boat storage facility on the Captain’s Village Marina site located in Scotch Creek. In order to build the 277- by 218-foot storage facility he asked the board to relax the minimum building height for a principal building from 11.5 metres to 22.5 metres.
In his report to the board, senior planner Dan Passmore said the Area F Official Community Plan does not support development over three storeys in the waterfront commercial designated area. The zoning regulation restricts height to 11.5 metres which permits a three-storey building with an additional height allowance in the event of a steeply peaked roof. “The proposed indoor boat storage facility will exceed this policy and the zoning bylaw height limitation by being roughly equivalent to six or seven storeys high,” said Passmore. “Staff recommends the board consider denial. The staff recommendation was made in support of the OCP, which recommends limiting height on lakeshore situated 290 feet from the
lake to three stories.” As well, Passmore said operations management staff had concerns about fire protection issues and the form and character of the building itself. Speaking on behalf of
the marina and its agent David Cunliffe, Morgan said fire suppression has been addressed quite satisfactorily and the tall building would reduce the marina’s footSee Height on page 20

New look planned for arena By Adam Williams
KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK
Chase’s Art Holding Memorial Arena will look much different by this time next year. The Thompson-Nicola Regional District board of directors has given the village $45,000 from the Federal Gas Tax-Community Works Fund to help with upgrades to the community’s lone indoor rink. The updates planned for the arena – the home of, among others, the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Chase Heat – include repairs to the boards,
the glass and the penalty boxes. There will also be updates made to the scoreboard and the sound system, while all lights in the arena will be replaced. “It’s just a bunch of housetidying things that need to be done,” said Brooke Kynoch, president of the Chase and District Recreation Society. “The place has been there for over 15 years, so a bunch of stuff hasn’t been done. With their [the TNRD’s] help, we’re making everything look new again.” Some of the repairs – lighting changes, for example – are being covered by the Village of Chase.

Height proposed equal to six or seven storeys Continued from 19 print and impact on the lake. “It gets boats off the lake. This type of storage has been promoted in Area C and it will clean up the unsightly look of boats, etcetera on site,” he said. “The height optimizes the efficiency of the facility and the owner is looking at investing $2 million including purchase of a $500,000 fork lift.” Morgan also claimed the building would not destroy mountain views, would be softened by textured cladding to improve esthetics and pointed out the owner would like to rezone the remainder of the property later for more housing. “Tourism is the lifeblood to Area F and Scotch Creek has been in decline for the past few years,” said Morgan. “We should not be discouraging development and they are the biggest employer in the North Shuswap. While agreeing with much of what Morgan said, Area C South Shuswap director Paul Demenok said he couldn’t support almost doubling the allowable height. “I think it sets a bad precedent,” he said, suggesting the marina owner use some of the available land to expand
horizontally. “If we’re willing to go 22 metres for boats, how high are we willing to go for people?” Both Area B Rural Revelstoke director Loni Parker and Area D rep Rene Talbot agreed with Demenok. “To me, you’re going down a path that makes it wide open to anyone else who wants to build high,” Talbot said. Area E Rural Sicamous director and CSRD chair Rhona Martin asked if fire suppression concerns would be alleviated if the boat storage facility had sprinklers.
Regional fire chief Kenn Mount said the real issue would be the inability of Scotch Creek Firehall ladders to extend beyond 40 feet. ‘The equipment investment is quite significant to get an apparatus of that type,” he said, noting North Shuswap firefighters are trained to fight fires from the outside, not the inside at this time. President and board member Dean Acton of marina owner ABCO, who was in the gallery, was given the opportunity to address CSRD directors.
“When you look at the height requirement, it’s from an efficiency standpoint,” he said, noting boats are now much longer and taller than they once were. “If we stay within 11.5 metres it doesn’t make it efficient to stack the boats.” In response to suggestions he use some of the other land to build on horizontally, Acton said he could possibly go down to a four-level structure but that would seriously affect his return on investment. “I think the land around there could be put to better use than

Osprey nest relocated Earlier this week, material from an osprey nest near Pritchard ignited on a power pole. A BC Hydro crew extinguished the fire and relocated the nest, which was not damaged, to a new, safer location. Osprey, a protected species in B.C., build bulky stick nests on top of trees and other tall structures. The nest, which is about four feet wide, was successfully lifted off the pole and set on a new platform just a few feet
away. To move the nest, power line technicians first cut the power to the lines and grounded them. The crew then pushed grounding rods underneath the nest and created a rope cradle to provide the support needed to keep the nest in one piece during the move. The crew used a BC Hydro truck with a bucket attached to sling the nest to the platform. The new nesting platform is 60 feet tall. The higher pole will attract the osprey as they prefer to roost at the high-

Wendy Hooke 1923-2015 Wendy passed peacefully at Heron Grove Care Home on April 24, 2015. She is survived by her four children, Nigel, Harry, Stephen and Martin, brother Greg and numerous grandchildren and nieces and nephew. She was predeceased by John, her husband of 48 years and twin sister Robin. Born in the small community of Telkwa BC she was raised there on the family farm and learned at an early age to appreciate nature and she loved country life. With husband John she spent many years on their cattle ranch before moving to Dawson Creek and finally retiring with him to the Okanagan. She was active in the music community and with nature activities and gardening and spent many years as a leader with 4H. She will be remembered for her love of music and the outdoors and a willingness to get involved. A memorial service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church in Vernon at 2:00 pm on June 13th 2015. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made by way of donation to the Allan Brooks Nature Centre or the North Okanagan Naturalist Club.
ALLWOOD, PATRICK VINE Patrick Allwood died in the evening of May 20, 2015. He was born in Victoria, BC on Sep. 23, 1934 and grew up in Revelstoke and on Vancouver Island, attending Qualicum College boarding school. He worked for CP Air, serving as General Manager in Lima, Peru. In 1966 Patrick married Erika, from Germany, and, while in Peru, their children Kevin (died 1989) and Tessa were born. Patrick and Erika moved to Salmon Arm where they owned and operated Salmon Arm Stationery from 1974 to 1995. Patrick loved the theatre and acted in and directed many plays. His enthusiasm led to his career as Town Crier for Salmon Arm and to entertaining children as Santa Claus. Music and bicycling were an important part of his life. Patrick was active in the community, serving as president of the Downtown Improvement Association and as a member of the founding group of the Shuswap Art Gallery. On June 20 at 3 pm a celebration of the life of Patrick Allwood will take place at 341 Foothill Road SW in Salmon Arm. In memory of Patrick, donations to the Shuswap Theatre through Shuswap Community Foundation would be appreciated. JONES, JOHN CHRISTOPHER April 10 1933 – May 25, 2015 It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother on May 25th, 2015 at the age of 82 years. John was born in Lacombe, Alberta, April 10th, 1933. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Verna, his son Gordon (Debra), his daughter Karen and grandchildren Allyssa and Brandon Jones. He is also survived by his brothers Albert and Robert, and sister Muriel, and their families. He was predeceased by his parents Barbara and Christopher Jones. John and family moved to Salmon Arm in 1965 where he was employed for a short time at Federated Coop before moving to work as a steam engineer at Canadian Safety Fuse (now Orica Canada) in Tappen, BC. He was employed there until his retirement in 1993. John loved to camp, fish, grow flowers and play cards. His love of children led to his coaching Little League Baseball; allowing car motors to be rebuilt in his garage, pick up trucks to be washed on his front lawn and musical instruments to be played in his basement with his pool table being used as a music stand. After retiring he spend much of his time creating woodworking projects for his family. John enjoyed people, jokes and a good laugh; and the family home was usually filled with friends and laughter. The family would like to thank Dr.’s McClelland and Levins for their special care and encouragement during his long fight with COPD. At John’s request no service will be held, however, friends are invited to the family home at 2435 – 5th Ave. NE, Salmon Arm for a gathering in his memory, on Saturday, June 6th, 2015 from 1-4 pm. Arrangements entrusted to Fischer’s Funeral Services & Crematorium Ltd., Salmon Arm (250) 833-1129. Email condolences and share memories of John through his obituary at www. fischersfuneralservices.com.
