GMO debate continues

Tens of thousands of people marched in cities across the world on Saturday to protest against the American biotechnology giant Monsanto and its genetically modified crops and pesticides, and I can but applaud their efforts. The third annual March Against Monsanto—begun by the Occupy movement—was held in around 400 cities in more than 40 countries from the Americas to Africa and Europe. Locally, dozens of protesters marched in Kelowna, concerned that genetically modified products like the Arctic Apple may become commonplace in Canadian supermarkets. Genetically-designed to be nonbruising, the Arctic Apple was engineered by Summerland’s Okanagan Specialty Fruits, which is also working on other fruits such as peaches and pears to make them resistant to a number of diseases. The consensus among consumers, including myself, is that GMO (genetically modified organism) foods are not safe, and there is a growing movement to make the labeling of such products mandatory in Canada, as it is in more than sixty nations globally. It should be our right to know what is in our food, and the Canadian government’s reluctance to adopt a labeling policy leaves me dumbfounded. Scientists, for the most part, do not agree that GMO foods are harmful to consumers, including those at Health Canada, which recently approved the Arctic Apple, poised to hit stores early next year. Some fruit growers are concerned about this development. Says British Columbia Fruit Grower’s Association president Fred Steel, “If you’re going to let the market decide, you’re going to have to give people a reference point to make a decision based on their personal purchasing habits, and I would assume that would be through some kind of labeling,” says BCFGA president Fred Steele. Steele says there is concern that if the Artic Apple isn’t labeled as a genetically modified (GMO) product, consumers who don’t want to buy modified foods might want to stay away from all apples, including those that are non-GMO. “You know, I’ve never contested the science of this thing,” he says. “It is the market reaction to this thing and we really don’t know yet.” Ironically, according to an American magazine, many farmers are abandoning genetically modified seeds in favour of conventional products. Modern Farmer discovered that there is a movement among farmers abandoning genetically modified organisms (GMO) because of simple economics. Farmers are finding the yields of regular seeds equal to or even better than those from GMO seeds. Some farmers are also seeing Mother Nature adapting to engineered plants, with weeds and bugs returning despite the presence of the GMO component. The debate continues, as does my quest to eat locally and naturally.
