LOCAL WEATHER

Hot and dry, will continue

May was near record low rainfall, which is leading to water and fire restrictions AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

After a near record hot and dry May, water and fire restrictions are coming into effect. The rain gauge at the Parksville city works yard registered an average of 47 mm of rain in May over the last 10 years. From April 29 to May 29 this year it measured rain on just three days, totalling 5.6 mm. The nearest official Environment Canada gauge, in Comox, measured a bit more at 13.2 mm, but that still made it the fifth driest May on record. And meteorologist Matt MacDonald said 11 mm of that came in just a few hours, without which it would have been an all-time low. “A lot of stations on the Island broke records in May,” he said, which is due to “a large blob of warm water off the coast.” An El Nino current has now measured half a degree above normal for more than five consecutive months, which he said is quite a big number. “June is usually the cold-low month,” he said, when there can be quite a bit of precipitation, evening out the entire summer, but the long-range forecast continues to look hot and dry, though he admits it is hard to predict with any accuracy more than a few days out. The dryness has been a regular trend locally with January at about half the average and March and April only getting a third. There was almost double the norm in February, but didn’t make up the shortfall. The dryness is resulting in fire bans and water restrictions much earlier than normal. The provincial government imposed category 2 open fire prohibitions across the Coastal Fire Centre this week, covering all crown land, provincial parks, and private land not covered by a municipality. And local municipalities are following their lead. Because the bans can change and vary by jurisdiction, people should always check with their local municipality or fire department. The ban applies to burning any material smaller than two metres in height and three metres in width, burning of stubble or grass, the use of fireworks, firecrackers, sky lanterns, burning barrels or burning cages of any size and the use of binary exploding targets (e.g., rifle target practice). It dose not prohibit campfires smaller than a half-metre high by a halfmetre wide, or cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes. Fines for lighting a fire range from $345 to $100,000 and/or jail time. See WATER RESTRICTIONS, page A4

STARTING POINT Two arrested with stolen property Two Horne Lake residents were arrested May 27 in relation to stolen goods in the Parksville Qualicum Beach and Nanaimo region, according to police. A news release issued by Oceanside RCMP says police were led to a residence in the Horne Lake area after “several tips from the public.” Members of the Oceanside RCMP Crime Reduction Unit and General Investigation Section executed a search warrant on the residence located in the 300 block of Horne Lake Road in Qualicum Beach. The release said RCMP “had reason to believe there was stolen property being housed at the residence.” Police said stolen property was located and seized from the residence which led to the arrest of a 29-year-old female and 27-yearold male resident of the address. Police recommended charges of Possession of Stolen Property to Crown Counsel.

Correction The address of the new B.C. Liquor Store location is 810 Island Highway, Parksville. In our recent business profile The NEWS incorrectly said it was located at their old address. AUREN RUVINSKY PHOTO

There have been multiple sightings of cougars and bears in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area, but within the normal range and nothing alarming, said conservation officer Stuart Bates. “There appears to be a family of cougars in Nanoose Bay,” he said, of an incident in late April when five sheep were killed. “We set up a live trap but they didn’t come back.” He said they don’t respond to regular sightings or deer being killed, they only respond when cougars exhibit unusual behaviour like being in populated areas midday or hanging around schools when they’re open. “If you remember nothing else when you see Docket: 66080 a cougar, just remember, don’t scream and run Client: 247 - Air Canada away, ” he said explaining the high pitch sounds Job Name: Nanaimo News like Contact: a deerLara in trouble and, “they are cats, if you Vanderheide Production run they will chase you on instinct.” Beyond that “make yourself as big as possible, open anB:10.5” umbrella, wave a stick, pick up small children, ” Bates said. The only difference in dealing with bears and cougars is that you should stare down a cougar with eye contact, but not a bear. Bears will see eye contact as a challenge, keep an eye on them but don’t stare bears down. Bates said the other most important thing is to minimize animal encounters in the first place. “Don’t attract deer or raccoons, the cougars follow the food, if you attract deer, you’re attracting cougars.” He also pointed out that “bird seed is a big issue, bears love bird seed.” Finally, he said that dogs are a good meal for cougars, with at least one report of a dog being taken locally this year. He said bringing dogs into the wilderness as protection only works if they are leashed, otherwise they’re just running around baiting cougars and if a bear chases them, they lead the bear straight to you. He recommends leaving dogs at home or at least keeping them on a leash, unless you want to use them as a deflection and offer them up to the predators so you can leave.

The fish were not biting but that didn’t deter an enthusiastic group of casters from having a wonderful day fly fishing on May 29. Two dozen volunteers from the Parksville/ Qualicum Fish and Game Club hosted another successful Fishing Forever event at the Coombs Country Camp Ground. A hundred people from various retirement homes including Trillium Lodge, Stanford Place, Eagle Park, The Gardens and Long Lake Chateau enjoyed a morning of fishing. Other guests from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and M.S. Society were also invited. Brian Borrett with the club said although there were a lot of big fish in the lake and plenty

of fat worms for bait there were few strikes. “The University of Victoria put 100 fish in the lake for us and the Coombs Country Campground put in 150,” he said. Qualicum Foods supplied 100 lunches for all of the anglers and 89-year-old Trillium resident Andy Ovington took a trophy for the biggest trout. The program was started in 1988 by Walt Limteen, a journalist and TV announcer in Prince George. He loved fishing but found he could not fish anymore on his own as he had a muscle wasting disease so he started Fishing Forever through the B.C. Wildlife Federation for old and disabled people. The program runs throughout B.C. at different times of the year.

acting erratically circling a yellow crab trap float,” officer in charge, Gord Gibb said. Within minutes they were in a zodiac headed to the scene where they slowly approached the pod of six whales, including two small ones. “The small yellow crab float disappeared out of sight, numerous times,” he said, so they stopped nearby. “The whales closely encircled our boat slapping their tales. You could tell they were distressed. Lots of large pockets of bubbles were coming up at times.” “We were stopped up when the yellow float again resurfaced 10 feet away,” Gibb said. “Clearly it was snagged on one of the whales so we ma-

neuvered over and quickly made the decision to try to recover as much line as possible.” “You could feel the line rubbing on itself and the whale when pulling. We went astern to help with recovery and the whale cooperated.” At 4:40 Gibb reports, “The full grown whale was directly under us and you could clearly see the white underside, it rolled and the crab trap came free about five feet below us.” “The whales regrouped and headed south. The complete trap and line was recovered and the whale appeared unharmed.” He said this was a good reminder to boaters that whales have enough hazards to deal with and by law they must stay at least 100 metres away, about the length of a football field.

A long awaited town hall style meeting about Parksville’s $24 million water treatment plant attracted around 100 people to Knox United Church Thursday evening. Mayor Marc Lefebvre gave a brief history of the project and scaled down “plan B,” which was developed when it became clear they couldn’t count on the traditional two thirds funding from provincial and federal governments. The original 24 mega-litre per day intake would have met Parksville and Nanoose Bay’s water needs for an estimated 40 years for $37 million. The new $24 million plan for eight mega-litres will meet the needs for eight to 10 years before additions have to be made, according to the Englishman River Water Service. Lefebvre said there will be a referendum late this year or early 2016 — depending when they find out about grants — on borrowing $5.4 million, which would mean a tax increase of 2.25 per cent from 2016-2024, an increase of $4.33 for the average house. With over 20 members of the public taking to

the mic to voice concerns and ask question, including some long speeches, the tone was generally civil and muted with most people agreeing a plant is needed — due to an Island Health decree that all surface water must be treated by 2017 — but many questioned the size, cost and number of options considered. Some pleaded for a public water board to oversee the project and several spoke of the huge expense, suggesting we should build the smallest facility possible for now and leave the future costs to the future residents. There was tension evident on council as Coun. Leanne Salter said several times she didn’t know how the intake location ended up so much further down the river than originally proposed, only to have Lefebvre repeat that it was the result of a well documented 10 year negation between Island Health, who wants it as far upstream as possible, and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, who want it downstream. RDN WATER SERVICE AREAS MOVE TO WATER CONSERVATION LEVEL 3 All Regional District of Nanaimo water service areas are introducing Water Conservation Level 3 sprinkling regulations effective Saturday, June 6, 2015.

School District 69 (Qualicum) and School District 71 (Comox Valley) have negotiated a 10-year park use permit to continue operating an Outdoor Education Centre in Tribune Bay Provincial Park on Hornby Island, said a news release from the SD 69. “When we talk with students and their parents about memorable learning experiences, they invariably harken back to time spent at Tribune Bay as a high point in the educational experience,” said superintendent Rollie Koop. “We are pleased to be able to ensure, through the signing of this agreement, that this opportunity

will continue to be available to our students for the next decade.” According to the release, the agreement will allow the Tribune Bay Outdoor Education Society, who operate the centre, to expand the learning opportunities and programs available to student, adult, family and senior groups. Each school district has also guaranteed capital investment funds over the next two years so that the Centre’s executive director, Gord Campbell, can proceed with facility improvements. This will lead to year-round use of the Centre. — NEWS staff / SD69

Customers are Saying... “We have had our Ironman bed nearly year now and it is the most comfortable bed we have ever slept on. We miss it if we have to sleep away from home! We had great service at M&N Mattress. They are very friendly, very knowledgeable and thorough. They answered all the questions we had and made sure we knew exactly what we were getting. We like to shop locally and we are very glad we did.” George & Diana Cameron., Qualicum Beach

“Friends raved about their Ironman mattress after we told them we were looking to buy a new one for our adjustable bed. We found M&N Mattress Shop sells them, so we checked them out, bought one the same day and have not regretted our purchase. The mattress gives good support and we have found we both sleep much better since getting it about a year ago. Our daughter and son-in-law bought one on our recommendation and also love theirs. Thank you for great service - changing old for new and getting rid of the old one for us.” Mike and Tina Hanlon, Parksville

RDN & the ICF

T

he taxpayers of the Parksville Qualicum Beach area effectively have no voice on the board of directors of the Island Corridor Foundation, despite promising the ICF $1 million. The evidence supporting this theory came to light last week during the Regional District of Nanaimo’s board of directors meeting. The RDN board was about to debate a motion that formally asked the ICF to release a consultant’s report on the effectiveness of the proposed repairs to what was historically called the E&N Railway. Too many people, including many with experience and knowledge related to railway operation, have said there’s no way the ICF will be able to get passenger rail service up and running on the Island for $20 million. That’s what the ICF hopes to gather from regional districts and the provincial and federal governments. The ICF has a commitment for about a third of that funding, all from the five regional districts that are so-called partners in this venture. Each regional district sends a representative to sit on the ICF board. The RDN’s rep, Nanaimo Mayor Bill McKay, excused himself from the RDN board’s discussion last week. If the RDN’s rep on the ICF board isn’t going to participate in RDN discussions about the ICF, what’s the point of having such a rep? RDN chair Joe Stanhope agreed McKay’s decision not to participate in the discussion last week was odd. Perhaps McKay’s move would be understandable if there was some financial commitment being discussed, Stanhope told us, but that wasn’t the case last week. “Mayor McKay did not have to excuse himself from the information report,” Stanhope told The NEWS. “He’s taking a conservative approach, I’d assume.” Chairman Joe is too nice a person to say it, but what’s happening here is further indication the ICF wants no scrutiny or input from its supposed partners. Just the million bucks from taxpayers, thank-you very much. The RDN has to pass a formal motion to pry a consultant’s report from the ICF, for crying out loud. We understand why McKay would want to keep the rail service dream alive. If it was real, it would have a positive economic impact for the city he represents. However, when he goes to ICF meetings as the RDN’s rep, he is also representing the taxpayers of Bowser, Qualicum Beach, Nanoose Bay, Errington, Parksville et al. For many reasons, especially ones related to taxpayer money, it’s time to fish or cut bait with the notion of passenger rail service on Vancouver Island. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters WEMBLEY MALL BUS STOP COMPROMISE I just read the letter from Roberta Taylor regarding the transit bus no longer stopping in front of Save On Foods’ new store at Wembley Mall. Although I understand her point about the convenience to seniors of having the bus stop right in front of the store, I would, however, like to point out that it is also a very dangerous situation when the bus is stopped right in front of the store, and people are having to pass in front of, or behind the bus when walking to and from their vehicle. I have seen SO MANY close calls, where a pedestrian is almost struck down by a car, because of the bus blocking visibility of oncoming cars. Children in particular, often tend to dart out ahead of their parent, and people can’t see the oncoming cars when they step out from behind the bus, as they are returning to their vehicle. Perhaps the bus could stop somewhere on the outskirts of the parking lot where it wouldn’t pose such a danger to pedestrians? Would that be a reasonable compromise, so that everyone would be safer? WE NEED VISION Congratulation to Mr. Richard Pacanowski, for having the courage to write about his neighbourhood, we need more like that, indeed it is more than the current politicians in the City of Parksville and RDN have done. Once again it shows that we homeowners that care for our front yards are held hostage by the homeowners that just do not care at all. Also it shows the complete inability, total lack of leadership, lack of courage that politicians currently have, please politicians walk the streets, walk the roads, knock on our doors get to know us the taxpayers, not just during elections, not just at your coffee shop of choice but at our houses, in our neighbourhood, tell us your vision, your platform to help us in keeping our area in a proper manner, to help the one’s that fail. Once again we are held hostage by you politicians. I get that some are elected by acclamation and don’t need to provide any solutions, or vision, or platform on how, when, why, you see your area move forward.

HONOUR SOLDIERS Reporter Candace Wu’s recent front-page article about Qualicum Beach’s Liam Chambers serving as a sentry at the National War Memorial got me pondering what constitutes honouring those who suffered/died or are suffering and dying in the name of our freedoms and democracy. Are parades, memorials and a sentry program enough? I don’t think so. We also need to be on constant guard while stopping those who wilfully abuse our freedoms and democracy. This includes those who say they honour Canadian values while trampling all over them. To me, Prime Minister Stephen Harper et al, using the tragic shooting of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo by the mentally ill Zehaf-Bibeau to bring in Bill C-51, is not honouring the supreme sacrifices made by so many. We are now learning much of the confusion on that day was caused by the police themselves. Even with that, it was less than seven minutes between the shooting of Cirillo and Zehaf-Bibeau lying dead. We do not need 17 federal agencies having excessive powers. We do need good credible information. It is vital to a functioning democracy and a free society where people have the means of making critically informed decisions about what is in their own enlightened self-interest and that of their society. Yet Harper et al have not only muzzled our public scientists. According to Chris Turner’s 2013 The War on Science, he is destroying their capacity to do research. These scientists were taxpayer funded to provide us and our policy makers with good non-partisan research. Gone. How is that honouring democracy and those who died in its name? Canada’s system of publicly-funded research, set up largely by the Conservatives under Prime Minister Borden, made us world leaders in many fields which had positive economic spin-offs. This included pro-

tecting the environment upon which we all depend for life. As for honouring Canadian values, I encourage people to read Harper’s 1997 speech to the Council for National Policy. His actions exploiting our system since becoming prime minister indicates his low opinion of us, our values and our parliamentary democracy have not changed. YVONNE ZAROWNY Qualicum Beach

OBNOXIOUS PARTY I’m sorry to report that the beautiful Jedediah Island Marine Provincial Park was on Saturday, May 16 the site of a large, noisy, boisterous drinking party of young people who said they were from Parksville. There were heaps of bottles, cans and garbage everywhere, which was very unsightly. One naked couple were engaged in sex acts in broad daylight. However the worst thing was the noise of the music blaring from five or six massive speakers. It was ear-splitting when close by — my husband and I walked all the way over to the campsite from Deep Cove, where we had anchored, in order to ask them to please turn it down. They refused. The noise reverberated throughout the park. Other boaters hiking on the island all shook their heads sadly. It was so out of place, so obnoxious and so sad. Such a beautiful park and island should not be despoiled by such partying and gross noise pollution. My husband and I have sailed for many years, on this coast, on Canada’s East Coast, up North (Great Slave Lake), down in Mexico, the Caribbean, throughout French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand, Fiji, and Australia. We are sad to report that the noise and mess on Jedediah was the WORST we have ever experienced in all our sailing! We often encourage other yachties that we meet from all over the world, to come to BC but we would have been hugely embarrassed if any of them had come to Jedediah that day. The island is a real jewel and should not be trashed by young people out of sight of their parents’ eyes. We would like to ask Parksville parents to please speak to your youngster if they were at Jedediah on May 16. Please have a talk with them about respecting nature and others who wish to enjoy it.

Brenda Gough’s hair colour and style created by stylist Aneilla, at the Grotto Spa Hair Salon at Tigh-Na-Mara

BY BRENDA GOUGH bgough@pqbnews.com

Life may have taken an unwelcome turn for Nanoose Bay resident Vince Ditrich but thanks to good friends, his struggles are a little less daunting. The drummer for the band Spirit of the West is awaiting a kidney transplant. The situation makes it pretty hard for him to make a living when he spends three days a week in Nanaimo undergoing dialysis. Recently he was cursed with even more bad luck. His car hit a deer causing quite a bit of damage. Three days later his windshield was bashed in by a rock that fell from the heavens and then his old Volvo just died. He limped along with a borrowed vehicle until Good-Samaritans Miles Doughty of Miles-D automotive came along. Miles and his wife Lynne dropped by Vince’s house out of the blue and said, “I understand you need a little help … this is my Volvo. It’s yours now.” Vince became the recipient of a much needed car due to profound kindness from a couple of Oceanside’s finest citizens. Skydive Vancouver Island is now operating at the Qualicum Beach Airport. The new drop zone offers heart pounding thrills and breath-taking scenery. The business which is a member of the Canadian Sport Parachuting Association is already giving back to the community with a Jump for a Cure Weekend planned for June 19 to 21. Skydive Vancouver Island will make a donation from every tandem skydive done that weekend to the Angels Abreast Dragon Boat Team. Skydive Vancouver Island’s very own manifest person Allison is a breast cancer survivor. When the opportunity came to support the breast cancer survivor team with members from Parksville, Ladysmith, Nanaimo and Port Alberni they figured it was a great idea. Through paddling and local fundraisers the team helps to rehabilitate and strengthen survivors and at the same time support local breast cancer initiatives. You must register in advance to reserve your jump. Call 250-580-5867 or email: info@SkydiveVancouverIsland.com. Lots of fun things are happening at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre in Errington this month. The Nanaimo Bee Club will present the beautiful world of bees on June 13. Family and aboriginal day goes from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., June 21. Entrance is by donation on this day which includes games, crafts, balloon art, bird house painting, a treasure hunt and more. It takes a lot of volunteer work and money to operate the centre. Many local artisans are doing their part to help out, including Michael and Els Schutte. The Schuttes are from Holland and when they lived in that country Michael painted bears called “fighting chain bears” which had their teeth and claws removed and were forced into dog fights for entertainment purposes. A recovery centre for these bears was set up in Holland and Michael donated a number of his proceeds to that centre. These days the self proclaimed bear lover is painting two bear cubs rehabilitating at the NIWRC. The piece is almost complete and will be donated to the centre and used to generate revenue.

Nanoose Bay resident Vince Ditrich (left) is the drummer for the band Spirit of the West. On May 15 he was at the Quality Bayside Resort in Parksville to hear his band mate John Mann (right) perform with Allan Rodger. The heartfelt show featured selections from John’s solo album The Waiting Room which is a profound testament to the journey the singer took while he was sick with colorectal cancer from 2009 through 2011.

Nanoose Garden Club members Louise and Wayne Marsh loaded up their vehicle with all sorts of plants onMay 23 when the club hosted its annual plant sale. The sale generated $1500 and partial proceeds will be donated to the Nanoose Bay Library Centre where the group holds its monthly meetings. The public is welcome to the next garden club event, June 10. Avoiding the Summer Doldrums is at 1 p.m. at the Nanoose Community Centre.

89 year old Andy Ovington who resides at Trillium Lodge impressed his wife Lois after he reeled in the biggest trout of the day at the Fishing Forever event, May 29. Seniors from retirement homes in the community enjoyed a morning of fly fishing at the Coombs Country Camp Ground. Facilitated by the Parksville/Qualicum Fish and Game Club and volunteers, the program enables the elderly and disabled to delight in a day of fishing.

Skydive instructor Gord Gauvin (left) and his partner Allison Cooney (middle) are hoping to raise some money for the Angels Abreast Dragon Boat team. The pair operate Skydive Vancouver Island at the Qualicum Beach Airport. Their friend May Murphy (right) who is battling breast cancer is a member of the dragon boat team. From June 19 to 21, proceeds from each tandem jump will be donated to the breast cancer support group.

Keith Horton and his dog Kiwi were impressive in a dog agility demonstration held at a garden party fundraiser, May 29 at Arrowsmith Lodge and Cokely Manor in Parksville. Several canines mastered the obstacle course by leaping over jumps, running through tunnels and weaving through poles. Both young and old students of Sheila Keddy’s K9 camp proved that you can teach an old dog new tricks..

Several artists worked among the wildlife at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre in Errington, May 30. Michael Schutte was painting this picture of Paddington and Helen. The bear cubs are being rehabilitated at the centre and once the piece is finished it will be donated to NIWRC. A year ago the artist donated a painting of the centre’s famous bald eagle Sandor. Limited edition prints helped generate $2000 for the facility.

Submissions are welcome. Telephone Brenda Gough at 250-248-1188 or email: bgough@pqbnews.com

DROP THE NEEDLE ENTERTAINMENT

DJ company diversifies into party games JESSICA SKELTON

reporter@pqbnews.com

Craig McNeil and Katrina Cain want their business Drop the Needle Entertainment to be more than your average DJ service. So, in order to diversify, the couple has decided to add party games to the company’s list of offerings. “Craig and I like to be innovative,” said Cain, who has a background in event planning and an extensive knowledge of music. “We go against the grain.” She and McNeil, who previously worked as a DJ on the Island and the Mainland for 15 years, started their homebased business company in May 2013. While they cover an area ranging from Courtenay to Victoria, Cain said they do a majority of their business in Parksville during the Christmas party and wedding seasons. Things can be pretty slow throughout the rest of the year, however, which is exactly why the couple decided to expand their services. Party games, after all, don’t have a season. “It’s really a lot of fun,” said Cain, who added she and McNeil are themselves game enthusiasts. “We have more board games than anyone else on the planet,” said McNeil. For work, though, the couple leaves their board games at home and bring out more crowd-friendly options. For

example, there is Kamikaze Karaoke, in which participants spin a wheel to find out which song they have to sing and in which style they have to do it. They also have an adult version of Pictionary called Win, Booze or Draw; a battle of the sexes game known as Beauty vs. Brawn; and their own versions of music trivia, pop culture trivia and music bingo. For chil-

dren’s events, Cain and McNeil have a selection of family-friendly games. No matter what is played, however, McNeil said he and Cain really try to read the audience members in order to customize the entertainment. “People know what they want,” said McNeil, adding that it’s the DJ’s job to figure out what that is. “It comes down

to our knowledge (of music and pop culture).” “People want to hear music that reminds them of formative times in their life,” said Cain. “They have a strong emotional connection (to the music) … We try to tap into that.” Cain said that anyone can hire Drop the Needle Entertainment for game services, be it as a time filler at a wedding or the main event at a party. She said the company has also run family programs in the Comox Valley and would like to do similar work with the RDN. One of the main markets the couple is trying to break into, however, is local pubs. Cain said they are particularly currently soliciting on-going week-night game services at these venues, adding that such an attraction could help bring customers in on these traditionally slow nights. Of course, as they expand into this new territory, Cain said the company will need more staff. And while she said it isn’t an issue to teach someone how to use the DJ equipment, she did say all hopeful staff needs to know their music and how to read a crowd in order to qualify for a job. “You don’t want to be that person who screwed up their wedding,” she said. Learning the pros and cons of closed-end funds

The closed-end fund shares many characteristics with its cousin, the open-ended mutual fund, but with some distinguishing differences. Once a closed-end fund has been issued and starts trading on the secondary market you can no longer purchase it through the issuing company. Instead you must find another investor who is willing to sell. And while a healthy secondary market does exist for most closed-end funds, the market is not highly liquid. Often they will trade at prices below their net asset values. This is not a good thing for

DOLLARS

AND SENSE By Jim Grant

those who subscribe to initial offerings of closed-end funds. But for patient investors who wait and buy through the secondary market, one person’s loss can be another’s gain. Closed-end

funds can often be purchased at meaningful discounts. And if you do your homework you can find closed-end funds with annual redemption privileges at NAV. Closed-end funds can be particularly appealing for income oriented investors, since a lower purchase price means more income per dollar of investment. Plus an added bonus: some of them still benefit from income re-characterization, a significant tax advantage that our government has been trying to do away with through recent budget measures. (In a nutshell: in some cases, closed-end funds

have been grandfathered for extended periods.) Some other characteristics that distinguish closed-end funds from traditional massmarketed mutual funds are that closed-end funds can be more fully invested since shares cannot be redeemed daily. The more successful a mutual fund is the more new money it attracts. Continued success becomes more difficult. This headwind does not apply to closedend funds. Secondary market trading of closed-end funds does not trigger deferred sales charges (an indirect way for mutual fund ad-

visors to get paid). They may be subject to commissions, however, depending on how your account is set up. Closed-end funds are not always the best choice, but they do have their place: particularly on the fixed income side of a portfolio where factors such as yield and taxation are important. QUALICUM BEACH CIVIC CENTRE JUNE 6

Local event organizer turns to comedy

Next show will also feature three out-oftown comedic talents JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pqbnews.com

Bobbie Garnons-Williams loves comedy, and she wants to share that love with everyone. So, the WinterFest organizer has used her background in event planning to organize Bobbie’s Comedy Night in Qualicum Beach next week. “I wanted to bring some more fun and enjoyment to Qualicum Beach,” she said. This is actually the third night of laughs Garnons-Williams has put together in the area. She helped organize a show for the Parksville Lions nearly two years ago, which then gave her the idea to host her own show this past March. “That (idea for her own comedy event) was percolating for over a year,” she said. “I did a lot of background (research) before I hit the ground running.” Nearly 80 people attended the show earlier this year and Garnons-Williams

hopes the comedy night next week will draw an even bigger crowd. Headlining the event will be Vancouver-based funny man Matt Billon. While he dabbles in all styles of comedy, Billon said he mainly performs what he calls “insult comedy.” “You insult the audience and insult yourself,” he said. And while that might sound harsh, Billon said it’s never his intention to be mean. “My intention is always to make the crowd laugh,” he said, adding that he thinks everyone -- including comics -could use more comedy in their lives. “The one I’m talking to is laughing the hardest.” “He works the crowd really well,” said Garnons-Williams. Billon has a solid reputation that has landed him feature appearances and specials on CBC’s Madly Off In All Directions and The Debaters. He’s also written for This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and performed at Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival and XM Satellite Radio’s Laugh Attack. He has also started touring in the States. Alongside Billon, Victoria’s Myles Anderson will take the stage next week. See SHOW, page A31

Aaron Halliday will perform as Alan Jackson in a tribute show to country stars at the Parksville Legion next week. Steve Hillis as Garth Brooks and Candy Little and Darla Cooper as The Judds will also perform.

BIGGEST SALE

Three all-star country music acts are coming to Parksville’s Royal Canadian Legion, Br. #49 — Mt. Arrowsmith next weekend … well, almost. On June 13, the legion will host A Tribute to Country Music Greats with Aaron Halliday as Alan Jackson, Darla Cooper and Candy Little as the Judds and Steve Hillis as Garth Brooks. “It’s going to be a bang-up

show,” said the Legion’s entertainment chair Larry Hall. “I think people will enjoy what they see.” All three acts have plenty of experience with their tributes, after all. Darla Cooper and Candy Little, who both have day-jobs with the B.C. government, started their tribute act in 2000 at a contest held at the legion in Victoria. Neither had any experience prior to that gig, but that didn’t hold them back. “We were both huge fans of the Judds,” said Little. “It’s al-

most like we don’t have to try.” Halliday has also been performing as Jackson for over a decade. He said that he chose to portray Jackson because he felt a connection to the artist’s songs and the songwriting. “Him (Jackson) and I are of the same mindset,” he said. Hillis, on the other hand, began performing as Brooks all the way back in 1998 after a friend suggested he try it. “I thought I’d give it a shot,” he said, adding that he had been doing tribute acts since 1996. MUSIC AT TOSH

Two series for one great price Subscription to thank the loyalty of series subscribers over the years JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pqbnews.com

The Old School House Arts Centre is thanking local residents for their loyalty to the Music on Sunday concert series with a sweet deal. This year, a season subscription to the Fall 2015 Music on Sunday series also includes the three Harvest of Music Festival concerts in the same low-price ticket. “We’ve always had repeat customers,” said TOSH music director Ron Hadley. “Why not give some benefit?” “It’s benefit with a capitol ‘B,’” he added. The two series are normally sold as separate subscriptions, with the Music on Sunday series having 12 concerts and the Harvest of Music Festival having three. Holders of the new combined season ticket, however, will gain entry to all 15 concerts for $157.50. Those who purchase a subscription also get to choose their

seat for the season. Hadley said the Harvest of Music workshops are not included in the subscription price. These must be purchased separately. The musical selection in the combined series focuses mainly on classical and jazz performed by both national and international musicians, starting with classical pianist Sara Davis Buechner on Sept. 20. Several other groups making the trek to Qualicum will be the Tom Keenlyside Quartet and the returning Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet. There will also be a flamenco concert and demonstration set for Oct. 18 with guitarist Ruben Portillo, dancer Sandra Cisneros and percussionist Davide Sampaolo. “I’m really excited about all of them,” said Hadley. “These are top-flight professional musicians.” As usual, the Fall 2015 Music on Sunday concerts will be held on Sunday afternoons at 2:30 p.m. For the Harvest of Music shows, which in October, there will be a Friday evening concert and Saturday shows at noon and 2:30 p.m.

The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra and its music director Karl Rainer are wrapping up their 2014/15 season this week with a concert at St. Anne St. Edmund Anglican Church. The concert, titled A Fine Harmony, will include Concerto Grosso V by Georg Händel, An English Suite by Hubert Parry, Day Dreams by Haydn Wood and Cançoneta by Joaquin Rodrigo. Joe Pehowich Born September 2, 1923 in Mundare Alberta, passed away Tuesday May 26 2015 at Trillium Lodge in Parksville. Predeceased by his infant son David, Joe is survived by his wife Helen and his three sons Wayne (Patricia), Dan (Enid) and John (Laverne) and numerous loving grandchildren and great grandchildren. Railroading was a large part of Joe’s life. Working for the CNR he began his career working as a telegraph operator on the prairies. After working in Alberta and BC he completed his career as Superintendent of Marine operations for the railway. Joe was very much a family man. Showing endless love to his wife Helen and raising three sons. He most certainly enjoyed raising a toast at a meal surrounded by his family and friends. The family is very thankful for the dedication of staff at Trillium Lodge, assisting Joe in his later years and tolerating his repeated requests for a shot of scotch to take with his medication.

A special thanks to Dr. Sulz for his caring manner and sharing his love of curling with Joe. A service was held at the Catholic Church of the Ascension on Monday, June 1.

Show will raise funds for Lions

Games, Activities

CONTINUED FROM PAGE A25

A life-long comedian, Anderson has performed stand-up since 2011. In 2013, he won the Blue Bridge comedy festival’s Best in Victoria comedy competition and in 2014 he appeared on the North West Comedy Fest doing shows with Mick Foley, Natasha Leggero and Judah Friedlander of 30 Rock. “I really enjoyed his comedy,” said Garnons-Williams, who called Anderson’s comedy intelligent and observational. Garnons-Williams will also partake in the show as emcee and a comic. Her first crack at making an audience laugh was during a talent show in her years at Qualicum Beach Middle School. Even though comedy eventually took a back seat when she returned to Canada several years ago after living aboard, she once again took the stage at her March event. While she had a full stand-up set at the last show, Garnons-Williams said she plans to keep her time short this go around since she hasn’t written too much material since March. “I want them (the audience) to be satisfied,” she explained, saying she wants to keep the

show as fresh as possible. So, in order to round out the night, Garnons-Williams has invited new talent Peter Hudson from Nanaimo to perform. The show will take place at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre on June 6 at 7:30 p.m. The night will also include a cash bar and 50/50 draw hosted by the Parksville Lions. Tickets are $20 in advance and are available at Arbutus Emporium in Qualicum, Soak Essentials in Parksville, online at bobbiescomedynight.com or by phone at 1-877-808-2333. They are also available at the door for $25. The five extra dollars from those tickets purchased at the door will be donated to the Parksville Lion’s Venture Land Playground, Garnons-William said. For those who buy their tickets in advance, there will also be an opportunity to donate to the same cause at the show. “Any opportunity to raise funds for the park is fantastic,” Garnons-William said, adding that she hopes to continue to keep a charitable aspect to her comedy shows in the future. “I definitely like the warm and fuzzies,” she said.

Tribute acts are “all about attitude” CONTINUED FROM PAGE A25

When it comes to becoming a good tribute artist, Hillis said that “lots of experience is probably key” as there are a lot of things to learn along the way. According to Halliday, tribute artists need to focus on perfecting sound, music, costumes and movement in order to stay as close to the actual artist as possible. That way, an audience has the “chance to see as close to the real artist without having to pay the big money,” he said. That being said, not everything is true-tolife in a tribute performance. Sometimes, a performers’ own personality filters into the interpretation. “I tend to be more energetic than Alan Jackson,” Halliday admitted, saying Jackson tends to stay close to the mic during his shows. However, Hillis said personal touches don’t negatively affect a performance. “It’s all about attitude,” he said. “You’re selling it.” “People aren’t dumb,” he added. “You’re not pulling the wool over their eyes.” This isn’t the first time in Parksville for any of the performers; all three acts were part of the Vancouver Island International Tribute Festival

over the past two years. “They were really well received (at the Tribute Festival),” said Hall. For the show at the legion, however, the artists get to really show off their chops. The legion show will be spilt into three separate concerts, Hall said, with each artist playing a 40 minute set. There will be a brief intermission between each act. “It will be a good time,” said Hillis. The Tribute to Country Music Greats show will be at Parksville’s Royal Canadian Legion, Br. #49 — Mt. BALLENAS GIRLS SOCCER

Whalers win four of five at provincials Parksville team played well but untimely loss earned them fifth place in the province T YSON TAYLOR sports@pqbnews.com

It wasn’t quite the result they were hoping for but the Ballenas Whalers senior girls soccer team is home from a fifth place finish at provincials. The Whalers finished the tournament with a 4-1 record, but it was that one loss, a tough 2-1 decision to Windsor (North Vancouver) that saw them finish the provincials in the consolation side of the bracket. “It was a good game, very even,” head coach Larry Stefanek. “They had just a little more than us in that game, it was very close though.” “We had a couple half chances in the last 10 minutes of that game but we couldn’t tie it up. Credit to the girls though, they all played very hard.” In the end, the Whalers senior girls squad finished in fifth place, beating LV Rogers (Nelson) in a 4-0 final. Emily Robertson had a hat trick in the final game, with Sophie Palmer adding a goal. Winning four of their five games was a great showing for the Whalers but it was the one loss, at the wrong point in the tournament, which proved to be the dagger. “Yeah, that one game was the wrong one to lose,” Stefanek

said. “Any team in the top five at this tournament could have won it.” “We had three Island teams finish in the top five (Brooks, SMUS and Ballenas) so that’s also a huge positive too. We

played some good soccer all season long and I’m very proud of these girls.” Emily Robertson, who was on fire when it came to scoring goals all season, finished the provincial tournament with

eight goals, giving her the Golden Boot award when it was all said and done. Robertson scored two goals in each of the first two games, another tally in the fourth and a hat trick in the final game.

“Pretty impressive stuff,” Stefanek said. “She’s been our top scorer all season and has a knack for finding the back of the net.” “The nice thing about it all for us was that she was consistent in that aspect of things all season from her, very impressive.” Awards handed out for Player of the Game came in the form of Olivia Friesen in game one, Sophie Palmer in game two, Bronwyn Kirk in game three, Erin Pickup in game four and Claudia Ritzker in the final game. The Whalers team also walked away with the Fair Play Award, given to the most sportsmanlike team in the tournament. “We had a great tournament,” Stefanek said. “I’m very proud of these girls.” “When you win four out of five games, that’s a great tournament and usually means you’re in the medals but unfortunately it was just the wrong loss at the wrong time that put us on the other side of the bracket.” “We had a great season though and this group of girls should be very proud of what they accomplished here this year.”

MANLY CUP COMING

Shady Rest Eagles FC is looking for new blood T YSON TAYLOR sports@pqbnews.com

The Shady Rest senior men’s soccer club is looking for new members and has started their recruiting drive ahead of their annual Manly Cup game. Since it’s inception, the Manly Cup has been a closely contested game between the Shady Rest Eagles FC and their counterparts, the Oak Bay Old Boys out of Victoria. It’s been so close, in fact, that heading in to its 30th year, the two teams are separated by no more than four goals and the wins and losses are practically identical. “It’s been a tightly contested game each year,” said Jim

Cameron, organizer for the 60+ team. “We didn’t start keeping stats until 1992, but it’s been very close and balanced over the years.” “It’s always fun to get together and there’s still five original members that are on the rosters from the very beginning.” The Eagles have been around for nearly 40 years, having three teams all together. The three groups (35+, 45+ and 60+) are looking for members to join and take the field with the Eagles FC, continuing the tradition that’s been around for years. “New blood is always good,” said Rod Morrison, organizer for six-aside in Oceanside. “Having

younger guys.” “We have a good, solid core

of guys that are there all the time but we’re constantly looking to rebuild.” The Eagles FC play in the North Island league in a four team league and also take part in tournaments through the year as well. It’s a competitive league and the Eagles are always looking to field three teams through the year. “That’s our goal,” Cameron said. “We’re always trying to field the three teams, which keeps everyone playing and everyone involved.” “Again, with the recruiting, being able to bring people in and let everyone enjoy the game is what we’re all about.” See COME TO, page A35

The dust has settled on another successful boxing event for Gloved Up Promotions and after seeing hometown boy Aubrey “Bam Bam” Morrow come away with the Western Canadian Middleweight title, the future is looking bright for boxing on Vancouver Island. Terry Strawson, promoter for Gloved Up Promotions, was feeling optimistic after the “Rumble at the Rink” May 23. The original plan was to host eight fights, but just three took place. It could have turned out to be a disaster but fans left the event with smiles on their faces, impressed at the quality of boxing that was put on in the ring, regardless of how many bouts were on the card. “It was nice to see that,” Strawson said. “It ended well, which was great to see.” “It was positive to see happen but there are things that we can do differently next time we come back and we’ll have to do those things better to make it that much more enjoyable.” One of the bouts on the card that was cancelled was Gordy Racette’s fight. Racette was slated to be the first Canadian to fight in five decades but it never came to, as a failed prefight medical test just 30 minutes before the bout kept Racette off the card. “That was a tough one,” Strawson said. “When I got home and saw Gordy out there addressing the crowd, I got choked up.” “It was emotional for sure; it was hard for Gordy because he wanted it so bad. It was nice that he was able to get out there and speak to the crowd but it was tough to see that dream not come through.” Strawson did say that Gloved Up Promotions is looking at setting up another card. “We’d love to,” Strawson said. “We’re passionate about what we do and bringing another night of fights to Nanaimo would be a great thing, especially after the positive feedback from this last event. You have to strike while the iron’s hot.”

You can also register at Oceanside Place or Ravensong Aquatic Centre, all before June 24. The substitution list will open for registration on June 25.

“We want people that sign up to come in and have fun. We like to get everyone involved in the game and just get out there and enjoy themselves.” The Shady Rest FC practises Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Kwalikum Secondary School and anyone looking to get involved is encouraged to go out and see what it’s all about. “We get great turnouts for practices,” Morrison said. “It’s more of a scrimmage, but we get good numbers for both evenings.” “We’re always encouraging people to come out to practice, no matter how old or young, to get in a good run and get everyone going. It makes it that much more fun to have everyone involved, getting everyone out there on the field and having a good time together.” “It gives you a chance to build that relationship with others that you could play with and it gives you a good chance to get to know everyone else involved in the club as well.” For more information, visit the Shady Rest Eagles FC website at shadyresteaglesfc.com or you contact Jim Cameron at ajcameron@ shaw.ca

And the church organ played on JILL DAVIES NEWS Contributor

It is a quiet day in the early 1920’s. For those living in the small rural community of Nanoose Bay there is the sound of organ music growing louder and closer. Most would know that this is the day the first church in Nanoose is to be transported by Charlie Tipper and Jimmy Roberts from the old Shingle Mill to its new home on Nanoose Beach Road. As the little church rolls along the lanes the organist is aboard, diligently pumping out hymns. The history of Oceanside churc are interwoven as parish districts have been formed and reformed. The first church district was called The Anglican Church District of Nanoose and included Englishman River, French Creek, Errington, Little Qualicum and Nanoose Bay. It was founded in 1893 by the Rev. Canon Charles E. Cooper, the first English missionary who arrived in Victoria, travelled to Nanaimo by train and then on to Port Alberni by stagecoach. Knowing there was no place of worship, his intention was to establish a church between Nanaimo and Alberni. The first service was held at Brynmarl School, Nanoose Bay. A more central location was needed, so a suitable site was found at French Creek. Rev. Charles E. Cooper purchased the land and donated it to the Anglican community. A work bee was held to clear the site. Free burial plots were promised to those who helped. The cedar logs were hewn in the bush and then hauled first to the landing and then by rope, skid and oxen. Eventually the walls were raised with eight men squaring the corners. On July 26, 1894, St Anne’s Day, the church and its yard were consecrated. With all the community present, Mrs. Hickey played the organ as she would for the next 43 years. Over time, Nanoose members found the distance hard to travel. These included James Craig, Otto Renz and R.P. Wallis. So they organized services in their own neighbourhood at various locations like homes, Red Gap, the community hall and Arlington Hotel. In need of a permanent building, a former

office of Alex McKenzie’s Shingle Mill became the first church at Nanoose and this was eventually transported, with live organ music, to Nanoose Beach Road. It remained a Presbyterian Church until the United Church was formed in 1925. The beautiful little log St. Anne’s still stands behind Wembley Mall. In 1934 parishioners gathered to help restore the foundations. While no longer a rural church, St. Anne’s and its yard have been tenderly cared for. The cemetery is a tranquil place where the headstones commemorate the pioneer families who were instrumental in building the region we know today. Other rural churches include a relic of the Salvation Army Land Settlement at Coombs. Though not used as a place of worship for many years, the original Citadel still stands at Station Road and the Alberni Highway. By the late twenties, with the Church District of Nanoose beginning to separate, a seven acre plot of land was purchased for a new church in Errington. The consecration included the oldtime custom of ‘beating the bounds’ with the schoolboys tramping around the boundary to mark the plot. A small church was built and named St. Mary. In time and with a dwindling congregation, the church was closed and moved to Powder Point Rd. in Nanoose Bay where it still serves the community.

Mention must be made of Knox Church. In the early part of the 20th century, Presbyterian meetings had been held in local homes. They decided to build a church on donated land opposite the present Dairy Queen in Parksville. In time it became part of the United Church of Canada and eventually attendance outgrew capacity. Through the commitment of the members, a larger site was eventually purchased and the new Knox Church was erected on Pym. In 1975 the, then Village of Parksville offered to donate a piece of land. A few years later Craig Heritage Park was established where the museum now stands. Today the original Knox Church still stands there at the corner of the Island Highway and Franklin Gull Road. Although no longer consecrated, with its original stained glass windows and replica pews named in memory of the early pioneer families, for many it is still a perfect choice for weddings, celebrations and memorials. This living museum is home to historic buildings from Parkville’s early days with a host of artifacts and archives reflecting the daily lives of the early community.
