KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK

WELCOME amloops is located in the heart of the Interior of B.C., and as the “hub city” where all four major highways converge, it’s easy to get to. The city is an authentic, friendly community with the personal feel of a small town and the openness of a vast, rugged landscape to experience energizing recreational opportunities like hiking, biking, stand-up paddling and horseback riding. If golf is your passion, Kamloops is heralded as Canada’s most diverse golf destination, with 13 remarkable courses. A new activity you may want to consider is foot golf. Combining the elements of soccer and golf without the clubs, this sport is perfect for the whole family. Make plans to see and learn about B.C. wildlife this summer at the BC Wildlife Park’s Animal Encounters festival. There are so many opportunities to get up close to birds of prey, watch wolves being hand fed, and to see the park’s newest resident, Clover the Kermode Spirit Bear. A tour of the 10-plus art galleries, Kamloops Museum & Archives and the Secwepemc Museum & Heritage Park will provide hours of fun learning about the city’s vibrant arts, culture and heritage. The Children’s Museum at the Kamloops Museum provides many options for hands-on fun learning about the fur trade, Gold Rush and Kamloops’ colourful characters of the past. Speaking

K

of hands-on learning, turn your attention to the over 150 exhibits and experiments at the BIG Little Science Centre where kids — and kids-at-heart — will have tons of wondrous, hair-raising fun. Water adventurers are never disappointed with the 100-plus clean and beautiful lakes within an hour’s drive of the city. Try out the free Rent-A-Rod program at the Kamloops Visitor Centre and get ready to hook Salmo Kamloops, a famous Kamloops Fighting Trout. You may want to try stand-up paddling this year and marvel at all the freshwater turtles and fish you’ll spy as you slowly glide by. Or, take your water adventures indoors and enjoy the pools, waterslide and facilities at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre. Kamloops also lays claim to the only longboard track in Canada. Riding of a different style, the Kamloops Bike Ranch is one of a kind offering steep, trick and cross country trails within the city. If something higher and faster is more your style, there are zip lines to fly on in Chase and Ashcroft. Visit the Kamloops Visitor Information Centre to pick up your free “107 Things to Do” brochure in Kamloops. No matter what level your sense of adventure is at, Kamloops is a great place to let loose and just play. — Tourism Kamloops

THE ADAMS RIVER Gem of the Shuswap The Adams River

KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK

Nestled in the trees between Adams and Shuswap Lakes lies this pristine river which is fully protected within the boundaries of Roderick-Haig Brown Provincial Park.

Gem of the Shuswap ...

Haig-Brown, an avid fisherman and conservationist, had the foresight to protect this valuable but fragile resource. The Pacific Sockeye Salmon industry depends heavily on the Adams River, as it has the largest Sockeye spawning population in the world. Heavy use of the river for transporting logs was decimating the salmon stocks. Thanks to conservation efforts the Sockeye return every fall to spawn; most prevalent every four years when the river teems with over 2 million red coloured fish.

THE ADAMS RIVER The Adams River is also a wonderful playground for whitewater enthusiasts. Keep in mind though, that while the many sweepers and logjams are ideal for spawning beds, they pose a dangerous hazard to the inexperienced. The class II and III rapids offer great fun for kayakers and rafters. In summer the water is warm and inviting. The nozzle like “Gorge” is always a rush! For family adventure don’t miss an Adams River raft trip. Looking for more excitement? Adams River Rafting, Canada’s original cataraft company, offers trips with their exclusive pontoon style catarafts. Adams River Rafting has been operating since1983.

WHY KAMLOOPS? HERE ARE SOME REASONS TO E N J OY K A M LO O P S : • Warmest summers: Average temperature of 27.2 C from June to August. • Most parks: The area is home to 84 parks, which puts it at the top of the list for all of B.C. • Kamloops’ mild, dry four-season climate means visitors can enjoy summer and winter activities. • The Tournament Capital gets 2,000 hours of sunshine per year and only 270 millimetres of rain. • The average snowfall is 86 centimetres (33.86 inches) in the city area and up to 559 centimetres (17 feet) at nearby Sun Peaks, Canada’s second-largest ski resort. • Usually, the city ranks No. 1 in Canada for hottest summers, No. 2 for warmest springs, driest city and most sunny days in warm months, 11th for warmest year-round, 13th for mildest winter and 14th for most sunny days.

C E N T R A L LO CAT I O N Kamloops is located right in the heart of British Columbia’s Interior and is accessible by train, plane and automobile. From Kamloops, it is a 3.5-hour drive to Vancouver, six hours to Calgary and eight hours to Edmonton. Air Canada Jazz, WestJet and Central Mountain Airlines service the city, taking people anywhere from the coast to Prince George to Calgary — all of which open up the world to travellers. The Rocky Mountaineer Railtour and VIA Rail trains make stops in the city.

MEETINGS/CONVENTIONS Kamloops is becoming a choice destination for organizations holding major conferences. The city offers 16 convention facilities, ranging in size from 816 square feet to more than 48,000 square feet. There are also five major destination resorts in the Kamloops area and 10 other hotels with meeting facilities.

ALIVE WITH ARTS AND CULTURE HERE IS A LOOK AT WHAT THE CITY HAS TO OFFER:

Kamloops has a rich cultural heritage that ranges from art to theatre to First Nations history.

K A M LO O P S S Y M P H O N Y ORCHESTRA Some say there is nothing like experiencing live orchestral music — and Kamloops can provide that experience. From September to May, the KSO offers live music by composers from around the world and in a range of styles. Performances are held at the 710-seat Sagebrush Theatre, 1300 Ninth Ave., and the Pavilion Theatre, 1025 Lorne St.

SECWEPEMC MUSEUM AND H E R I TAG E PA R K In order to experience the cultural history of the First Nations people of this area, a visit to the Secwepemc Museum and Heritage Park is in order. The museum exhibits the oral history and legends of the Secwepemc people, along with historical photographs, illustrations and artifacts. Also on display are birch canoes, summer mat lodge and exhibits on hunting, fishing, clothing, games, food gathering and cooking. Heritage Park is located on the banks of the South Thompson River on a 12-acre property and is a complement to the museum. A one-kilometre stretch of trail leads visitors through the remains of a 2,000-year-old Shuswap winter village site, four reconstructed winter pit houses and a summer village. The village features a tule mat lodge, hunting lean-to, fish drying rack, fish trap, smoke house and traditional plant foods.

Fresh eats & INTERESTING F I N D S AT T H E

FA R M E R S ’ MARKET The Kamloops Farmers’ Market is back for another summer. Every Saturday and Wednesday head downtown for some fresh eats and unique finds. Among the over 100 participating businesses, Manager Annelise Grube-Cavers is excited to welcome new agricultural vendors as well as new artisans. “New farmers always bring new products so they’ll be growing different varieties, which is really nice, to have that diversity,” she said. Everything from radishes to kale, carrots to zucchini is available throughout the summer. Dry herbs, fresh herbs, seasoned butter spreads, several different kinds of tomatoes and berries — some you might never have hear of — are for sale. The market also boasts a selection of meats including poultry, different kinds of sausage, turkey, lamb, pork and beef. “You can basically find everything you need to cook your meals at the market,” Grube-Cavers said. Among the new artisans there are homemade soaps and lotions, some made from organic beeswax. New honey vendors from Lumby and Merritt join the many crafters and bakers.

Massage therapy and acupuncture booths have also returned. Find infused oils, sewing, jewelry, garden sculptures and art in many forms amongst the crafters. “Almost every single vendor has been returning from the last many years because it’s such a successful place for their business, so that’s great,” Grube-Cavers said. Not every vendor attends each week but many appear at both the Saturday and Wednesday market. A vendor list is kept up to date at kamloopsfarmersmarket.com, where you can check who will appear each week. The first Saturday market of each month will feature a live band. If you need to drive, check the Seymour Street parkade where parking is free every Saturday. The Saturday market is held in the 200 block of St. Paul St. and the Stuart Wood schoolyard from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. until Oct 31. The Wednesday market is held in the 400 block of Victoria St. from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Oct 28.

The downtown streets are buzzing with large crowds of people during the Downtown Merchants Market.

Dave Eagles/KTW

DOWNTOWN KAMLOOPS IS A FESTIVAL OF EXPERIENCES It’s all about the experience. The Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association’s (KCBIA) Festival of Experiences is all about finding everything Downtown Kamloops has to offer any day of the year. The focus is all about public-space programming and encouraging downtown businesses to bring themselves outside by doing live demonstrations, hosting classes and bringing any number of interactive activities to the streets of the downtown core. “You can come downtown any day in Kamloops and have a great experience because, downtown, the unique thing about it is there’s always

random stuff going on,” said KCBIA general manager Gay Pooler. “You could have a flash mob or someone doing yoga in the park or just sitting on a patio and watching the people go by, enjoying the sun.” For those seeking music, there are myriad places to regularly hear some of the best local performers, as well as those travelling through the city, including the Blue Grotto, Commodore Grand Cafe and Lounge, Turner’s Music Studio, the Art We Are, Plaza Heritage Hotel, Cactus Jack’s Saloon and The Grind.

LO O K I N G F O R A R T ? Downtown is bookended by two major art venues — Kamloops Art Gallery at the east end and the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre at the west end. There’s also Hampton Gallery on Fourth Avenue, with a different featured artist monthly and there is a continuous display or works for sale and exhibitions at Art We Are on Victoria Street. During the summer, the streets themselves become an entertainment venue as the KCBIA hosts various events. The Merchants Market, running July 22 to July 25, will turn Victoria Street into arts central, with dancers, musicians and theatrical

groups performing, plus blocks and blocks of sidewalk sales. Pooler calls it one of the biggest events of the year and the best shopping days of the summer. The Merchants Market features the most requested downtown event, the Taste of Downtown, on July 23. With the purchase of a $10 “passport” patrons can visit many downtown eateries for featured samples. And, in July and August, musicians from the area also take the streetside stage to perform for Live at Lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

CANINES, REPTILES AND BEARS, OH MY! Explore B.C.’s wildlife The B.C. Wildlife Park in Kamloops connects people to the province’s wildlife, encouraging a sustainable society within a healthy natural environment. Its motto is “Conservation through Education.” The park has canines, big cats, reptiles and amphibians, bears, birds of prey, small mammals, arachnids and more to see. Clover, the Kermode Bear, moved into his new home at the park this spring. Kermode Bears are very rare and Clover will act as an ambassador for his species. He arrived in 2012 after being unsuccessful with a rehabilitation and release program. He is believed to be the only one of his kind in professional human care anywhere in the world. The habitat is at the south end of the park and is 2.7 acres in size. Clover, also known as a Spirit Bear, is an attraction for residents of Kamloops and tourists from around the world alike. The Park’s Fawcett Family Wildlife Health Centre works closely with the Ministry of Environment and community partners to provide rehabilitation services to injured and orphaned wildlife in the region. Once those wildlife are successfully rehabilitated, they are released back into the wild. During the summer, see the bird of prey flight demonstration at the Highland Valley Copper Amphitheatre or ride over a kilometre of track on the miniature train, the Wildlife Express.

Kamloopa Powwow is celebrated over three days at the Secwepemc Powwow grounds alongside the South Thompson River, running this year from July 31 to Aug. 2. Kamloopa Powwow attracts people from many places, primarily from across B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Washington and Idaho. At the first powwow in 1979 there was one drum and maybe 20 dancers. Today, the powwow plays host to around 20 drums, hundreds of dancers, awards over $77,000 in prize payout and attracts upwards of 20,000 attendees. Last year was the fifth year for the drumming contest, which pays out $30,000 in prize money to five drumming groups. “Our people historically have always travelled and shared song and dance,” said Delyla Daniels, president of the Kamloopa Powwow Society. “In our eyes, we are welcoming the visitors to our territory.” Categories include traditional, chicken, jingle, grass, fancy feather and fancy shawl for adult, teen and junior. In addition to the regular dances, there is a selection of specials, which are hosted by families. Chief and council host specials each year, which signifies council recognizing visitors. Miss Kamloopa also hosts a special every year. A grand entry takes place everyday, at 7 p.m. on the opening night and then at 12 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The Powwow welcomes non First Nations people to partake, learn and enjoy. Kamloopa Powwow is known for its special competition that invites non-Aboriginal people to try the traditional dances. “We are open to having all people come and attend and witness this celebration,” Daniels said. “We do encourage non-Aboriginal people to attend and ask questions.” For more information, go online to tkemlups.ca or tourismkamloops.ca

KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK

Ribfest is back for its fourth edition this summer. Running Aug. 7 to Aug. 9 in Riverside Park, Ribfest is a growing attraction and the Daybreak Rotary Club of Kamloops’ biggest fundraising event of the year. It brings about 60,000 people from across the province for a weekend of live music and rib-tasting. Ribbers hail from as far away as New Mexico and as close as Vancouver. Teams will compete for first and second place, as well as best sauce, to be judged by a panel of local celebrities. Attendees can vote for the People’s Choice Award. Vegetarians can enjoy corn on the cob and salad options. The 2012 inaugural Ribfest was a resounding success, raising $40,000 for Kamloops charities. In its second year it raised $60,000 for various youth organizations in the city. With an ultimate fundraising goal of $100,000, Ribfest grows each year. Hot Nite in the City’s annual show and shine event will simultaneously take place downtown, making it convenient to stroll through the hot rods on Victoria Street on Saturday before grabbing a hot rack of ribs down at the park. The show and shine attracts upwards of 350 classic cars from Northwest Washington, B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan. Ribfest organizers also co-ordinate with the car show to give guests a way to hit up both events at once with a pancake breakfast and some Hot Nite wheels on display to round out the weekend festivities on Sunday, Aug. 9. On Saturday, Aug. 8, the Kamloops Dragon Boat Club will have a dragon boat festival during Ribfest, with 10 boats and about 200 people racing on the river. Similar to previous years, there will be live music from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and beer gardens. A large kid zone will be set up again, with bouncy castles, different booths and special entertainment for children. The kid zone is free, but donations to the Rotary Club are encouraged so it can bring money back into the community.

All their wines are made and bottled on our premises at Salmon Arm. They specialize in cool climate grape growing, and have varieties that are generally not available in other parts of BC. We think this makes our wines unique.

GRASS ROOTS DAIRIES Established in 1983 as Gort’s Gouda (now known as GRASS ROOT DAIRIES) started by producing gouda and quark cheese (a soft German cream cheese). Over the years, spices were introduced into their hard cheeses, as well as milk, chocolate milk, yogurt. With only natural ingredients and no preservatives, all of GRASS ROOT DAIRIES products come from their 100% grass fed cows and manufactured at their Salmon Arm cheese plant. Come in and sample their Spiced gouda, Maasdammer (a Swiss-style cheese) or Mazuda (unique to Grass Root Dairies- a semi-hard cheese) They are available at the farm location and at select wineries and grocers. Stop by the farm to try their home made GELATO. You can find GRASS ROOT DAIRIES at 1470 50th St. S.W., Salmon Arm. Go west out of Salmon Arm, take a left after the bridge. Follow the road and just past the school you’ll find Grass Root Dairies on the left. Sunnybrae Winery is aptly named and boasts its own unique micro-climate, perfect for growing grapes. The meticulously-groomed vineyard is nestled below Bastion Mountain next to the magnificent Shuswap Lake shoreline. The south-sloping volcanic ash land basks in sunshine during daylight hours and enjoys cooling breezes in the evenings. Come to the sunny side and enjoy our award winning wines and a casual fun-filled experience. We are open Mother’s Day weekend to Thanksgiving weekend 10:00am -5:30pm.

The festival began in 1992 as a small indoor festival, the result of the grassroots Shuswap Coffee House collective of the 1970s and 1980s which, by 1991, had coalesced into the not-for-profit Salmon Arm Folk Music Society. The main goals of the society are to encourage and promote performers from all parts of the world (with a special emphasis on Canadian talent) and to introduce audiences to the world’s incredibly diverse genres of music, musical instruments and the artists who play them. The festival takes place on the third weekend of every August at the fairgrounds in the heart of Salmon Arm, about an hour east of Kamloops. Set beneath the panoramic splendor of Mt. SUN PEAKS For a weekend away or a day trip up the mountain, Sun Peaks Resort is as much a summer destination as it is a winter one. It boasts events suited for everyone — from sports to crafts. “We have something happening almost every weekend, so it really just depends on what the guests interests are and what they’re into,” said Brandi Schier of Tourism Sun Peaks. The Summer Kick-Off is June 26 to June 28. The village will be alive with a multitude of activities such as the rock climbing wall, performances from clowns, a bouncy castle and much more. Opening day for lift accessed biking and hiking is June 26, connecting guests with 2,000 vertical feet of mountain-bike trails and a network of alpine hiking trails. The resort offers a unique B.C. golf experience, with the greens located 1,200 metres above sea level — the highest elevation course in the province. The summer concert series kicks off on Friday, July 3, featuring Lou Gramm on Saturday, July 4. The concert weekends are a huge draw. Attracting thousands of guests, it spans five weekends, with the first and last being the highlights.

Kamloops Wine Trail 1/2 & Full Day Guided Tours Available

July 18 will be the flashback weekend, with bands playing the best pop hits of the 80s and 90s. July 25 to July 26 is country fest. Aug. 14 to Aug. 16 is the sixth annual retro concert weekend, with three days of rock and roll — a resident favourite. Six-time Juno award winner Colin James will round out the series with a performance on closing weekend, Saturday, Aug. 29. The farmers’ market takes place every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. starting June 28. Local farmers, ranchers and artisans will be in the village selling fruits, veggies, local meats, crafts and more. Sun Peaks hosts a myriad of sporting events throughout the summer, from the 2015 Canadian Nationals Downhill Championships from July 10 to July 12 to the Reach the Peak Tod Mountain summit hike on Aug. 1. Lifestyle events include Canada’s Alpine Blossom Festival from July 31 to Aug. 2 and the Run to the Sun show and shine on Sept. 19. For more on camps and events, check out the events calendar at sunpeaksresort.com.

A great place for hours of entertainment and learning, the Big Little Science Centre has something for everyone. Adults have as much fun exploring and experimenting as the children. With ever-changing science adventure, the shows and activities bring families back again and again. But fun science doesn’t have to happen only at Big Little Science Centre. The centre’s website (blscs.org) has links to many fun science sites. As well, past issues of BIGScience — the centre’s newsletter, filled with science articles and activities to discover — are online. Also look online for updates on summer camps. Science is meant to be experienced. The staff and volunteers of Big Little Science Centre encourage everyone to explore fun science in the world around you.

Kamloops’ favourite outdoor theatre festival brings art out into the sunshine. Project X is a Kamloops theatre company that explores non-traditional venues. It seeks to expand the creative development of emerging artists and bring theatrical experiences to wide audiences. Project X Theatre’s X Fest is the only outdoor summer theatre festival in B.C.’s Interior. Shows take place in Prince Charles Park in the heart of downtown Kamloops from July 13th to August 1st. Since 2006, Project X has drawn over 17,000 people to X Fest. This year, artistic producers Melissa Thomas and Heather Cant bring two family-friendly productions, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood and The Shakespeare Show, to the park. The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, written by Jeff Pitcher, is a lively adaptation about the infamous outlaw who steals from the rich to give to the poor and will see Prince Charles Park transform into the heart of Sherwood Forest. The Shakespeare Show, or how an illiterate son of a Glover became the greatest playwright in the world, boasts something for the Shakespeare novice and expert alike. Written by Ryan Gladstone, the comedy promises a satisfying adventure complete with puppets, songs, satire and sword fights. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, with 3 p.m. matinee shows on July 18 and July 25. Tickets are available through the Kamloops Live! Box Office or by calling 250-374-LIVE. Tickets are also available at the gates 30 minutes before showtime. For more information, go online to projectxtheatre.ca
