Vanderhoof & Area The Carrier people pioneered the land in this area long before the first white man arrived. Following the driving of the last spike of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1914 the race was on to buy cheap land and the settlement of Vanderhoof was begun. The settlement grew and in 1926 the Village of Vanderhoof was born. In the 1950’s the Kenney Dam was built and more people came to the area. The 1960’s
brought a large influx of American immigrants and the town has begun to grow steadily ever since. Vanderhoof is reliant on the lumber industry as well as agriculture which is one of the largest forage producing areas in British Columbia as well as the recent mine construction going on. This scene has been under archaeological study for the past couple of years. Large land depressions mark the spot where houses once stood and there are hundreds of food caches to be found. Accessible by boat or by trail, this site will awaken the historian in everyone.
