Pirates’ Pond Farm

Twila, Esteban, and young Kyren are the pirates at work on Pirates’ Pond Farm. Their story is about making the shift from seeking buried treasure in the mineral exploration industry, to growing treasure – local, healthy food – when they bought a farm just 10 minutes from downtown Courtenay. As Esteban has a “piratical” aspect, and the property came with a pond, they named the farm accordingly.

The family operates a small, mixed farm raising rabbits for meat, chickens and ducks for eggs, and growing a range of vegetables. They’re also producing veggie starts in this spring.

The youngest Pirate plays an important role doing daily farm chores and raising speciality eggs. “I sell bantam eggs,” Kyren explains. “I’ve got a flock of four hens and a rooster.” He’s also taken on a volunteer role at the Market – collecting product from the vendors to pay the musicians each week.

portive and have given us a lot of good advice.” Twila adds that even though vendors are often selling the same or similar products, the atmosphere is not competitive. “Everyone really helps each other out. We feel like we’ve joined something amazing by becoming part of the Market.” Esteban was unsure of bringing rabbit to market, “We were afraid that we’d be facing the easter bunny syndrome. But people have been very receptive to rabbit meat.” Best way to eat rabbit? Twila says she likes rabbit curry. Esteban is a fan of BBQ’d rabbit legs. You can get curry spices from Ceylon Cuisine or Clever Crow, and As You Like It has fabulous BBQ sauce.
