Youth Week Gets ‘Big Air’
‘Extreme Home Makeovers’ underway here By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
Work continued this week on two Extreme Home Makeovers by volunteers with the Aldergrove Acts of Kindness team. The program, now in its 12th year, assists Aldergrove families with urgent home repairs, at no charge to the fortunate recipients. The home owned by Laura Canessa and her three sons, Dillon, Nick and Lucas, has severe water leak issues in the stucco and the fireplace masonry. Makeover leader Garth Dauncey said cracks and exterior will be properly sealed, and along with added insulation and ventilation will ensure that there would no longer be a mold and mildew problem. A new gas fireplace will be installed and the interior and exterior walls will be repainted and refurbished, among other work, such as installation of new heating ducts to the bedrooms. Laura is a single mom and cannot afford such a major repair, so the Acts of Kindness volunteers are performing this SEE: Page 7

Langley Township hosted a variety of B.C. Youth Week (May 1-7) activities, including a “Chill and Grill” at Aldergrove Kinsmen Community Centre’s skateboard park. For a couple hours after school on May 6 dozens of youths partook in scooter and bike competitions, enjoyed hot dogs and helped paint a banner in appreciation of the free fun in the park on a beautiful sunny afternoon.
Township raises the bar for non-profits By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star
Community groups will have to show they serve mostly Township of Langley residents if they want to get municipal grants in the future. Under a we-look-after-our-own rule adopted Monday, applicants for Township money must now prove that most of their members are Township residents and that a majority of the people they serve are Township residents.
If they can’t, the amount of money they get may be trimmed to reflect the actual percentage. Non-profits will have to submit a copy of their annual general meeting minutes, which must list their directors. The measures were unanimously approved Monday at the urging of councillor Angie Quaale, who said Township grants “shouldn’t ever be viewed as easy money.” Councillor Charlie Fox said the mea-
sures were “long overdue.” “It’s a bit more work [for the non-profits] but it’s not being overbearing,” Fox said. Councillors Kim Richter and Blair Whitmarsh were not present for the vote. The move comes in the wake of the latest debate over the amount of money the Township gives local non-profit groups. At their April 27 meeting, council voted to approve $334,410 in grants for SEE: Page 7
