Qualicum grad stands guard Liam Chambers now posted to the same spot Nathan Cirillo was shot CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
A former Qualicum Beach sailor and star soccer player is now standing guard for the Tomb of the Unknown Solider at the National War Memorial. The ceremonial guard posting means more than ever after the tragic death of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo late last year — an event that stunned the country, shedding light on the importance of sentry duty. Kwalikum Secondary graduate Liam Chambers started sentry duty last week and stood in the exact same spot as Cirillo. “It was a pretty intense moment for me,” Chambers, 23, told The NEWS from Ottawa. “I tried to think about everything and make that connection for myself.” Chambers is a lead seaman with Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Vancouver, which is homeIt was a pretty intense ported in Esquimalt. He’s been in the moment for me. I tried to Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) for think about everything and make that connection nearly four years. Chambers will be serving sentry for myself duty in Ottawa until May 26, made LIAM CHAMBERS possible through the National Sentry Program, created to reinforce the Canadian commitment to remember and honour Canadians who have served in both World Wars and those who have contributed to Canada’s military tradition to-date. “I joined the military because I wanted a professional career which would constantly challenge me,” said Chambers. “And most importantly for ceremonial reasons, especially because of the shooting that happened last year.” CAF members perform sentry duties from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. “I have three jobs every day,” said Chambers. “Two one hour postings and one hour of talking to the public answering questions… They ask everything from what certain dates are to what badges on my uniform mean.” He said his experience in the military has been an “incredible change” with a “steep learning curve” admitting he’s grown up quickly. Town workers take strike vote, 94% in favour
Their contract has been expired since 2013 and Qualicum Beach town workers recently voted 94 per cent in favour of strike action, CUPE Local 401 vice president Laurence Amy confirmed last week. “That’s with 100 per cent turn-out from our membership,” Amy told The NEWS from Nanaimo on Friday, noting 67 ballots were cast. Amy declined to comment on the specifics of the contract negotiations, but said wages and benefits are “always on the table.” “We don’t have dates scheduled but we have applied for mediation through the labour board,” he said. “In the meantime we will be doing essential service hearings… basically going over what is essential in Qualicum Beach.” Daniel Sailland, the town’s CAO, confirmed negotiations commenced with three days of discussion late last month and more scheduled for June. Sailland said the town’s contract expired at the end of 2013. He said the “entire contract” is being negotiated. “We have ongoing discussions that are scheduled for the near future and we expect to have this resolved shortly,” he said. Qualicum Beach Mayor Teunis Westbroek was not available for comment last week. Coun. Neil Horner seemed certain the town and union will come to an agreement. “Both sides have consummate professionals at negotiating tables and I’m confident they will come up with a solution in the best interest of the Town of Qualicum Beach and the people who work there,” Horner said. — NEWS Staff CANdACe Wu Photo

Rather large, distinct theft CandaCe Wu
news@pqbnews.com
Police are on the lookout for a 1976 Kenworth tow truck stolen from a rural Errington property in the 1100 block of Smithers Road late last month. The vehicle disappeared when the owner of the residence was out of town for the weekend between 10 a.m. April 24 and 7 a.m. April 27, according to Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman. “(The owner) retains the keys,” said Foreman. “Someone many have jimmied the locks, it’s an older truck so someone could have hot wired it or something could have been done to the ignition.” Foreman said Mounties have no leads at this point. “The problem is that a tow truck coming and going isn’t uncommon in the area in the middle of the night so it might not have raised any suspicions,” he said.

This information is the first of two articles intended to provide residents with ERWS history and background, options and fisheries benefits. This article looks at the history and development of the future water supply for our community. The second article, which will appear in Thursday’s PQB News, provides current information on the project. We hope you will review this information and bring your questions to a public information session on May 19 (Parksville) or May 20 (Nanoose). These articles will also be available on the ERWS website. INTAKE OPTIONS
ORIGINAL 1972 REGIONAL SURFACE WATER SUPPLY PLAN
The location of a new water intake site is a major piece of the water supply puzzle. The location is of interest to many in our community and First Nations people have a traditional link to the river. From a health perspective, a location further up the watershed is seen as beneficial while an intake as far down the river as possible can be viewed as the most beneficial approach for fisheries. When engineering and cost considerations are taken into consideration, the choice for the location of an intake becomes complex. Early plans for an intake on the Englishman River developed several options based on gravity systems above the Englishman River Falls which would deliver water to the community through a reservoir located on Little Mountain. Another intake option located below the confluence of the South Englishman River and Englishman River would require pumping to deliver water to the community. At the time, options were discussed with fisheries agencies who determined a lower intake would have less impact on fish. The lower intake location would also allow for additional fisheries enhancements such as the construction of the side channel spawning hatchery located on the west side of the Englishman River at the confluence of the South Englishman River. In 1997, a conditional water licence was issued authorizing the construction of the Arrowsmith Dam and storage of 9 million cubic meters. Half the volume was to be reserved for fisheries enhancements with the remaining storage for the community’s drinking water. This conditional licence required the flow in the river to be maintained at 1.6 cubic meters per second, a rate significantly above the summer flow rates seen in the past and which also required the City of Parksville to continue to use their existing water intake until the new intake was built.
COMMUNITY SURFACE WATER OPTIONS
The first formal regional water study commenced in 1972 and incorporated all the Regional District of Nanaimo’s water supply needs ranging from Bowser to Cedar. Three sources of future surface water supply were identified as Cameron Lake, Englishman River and Jump Creek/South Nanaimo River. Between 1982 and 1994 several other studies were prepared concluding the City of Nanaimo should be served by the Jump Creek and Nanaimo River water sources. With future water supply determined for the City of Nanaimo, the province focused the Oceanside region local governments on the possibility of a joint venture partnership to consider the Englishman River as a single surface water supply from Lantzville to Qualicum Beach as a “win - win” for both future 1993 INTAKE water supply and fisheries enhancements. At this OPTIONS time, the Englishman River was one of the most endangered fishery rivers in BC lending interest to the concept of combining community water needs with those of a threatened fishery. Given that all the water withdrawal licensed allocations were used in the Englishman River, water storage by means of constructing a dam was the only way to ensure an additional drinking water licence for withdrawal from the Englishman River would be granted. Given the threat to the fishery existing at the time, federal and provincial fisheries agencies ensured the storage and flow requirements for this licence included water for fish.
WATER STORAGE OPTIONS
The purpose of constructing a dam for storage is to harvest the abundant supply of winter water for use in the critical dry summer months. Many source and storage options have been studied over the years including: » Hidden Lake » Mid Englishman River » Shelton/Healy Lakes » Arrowsmith Lake » Fishtail Lake An environmentally sensitive use of water to improve fish habitat and domestic water supply. » Cameron Lake » Bonell Creek www.englishmanriverwaterservice.ca www.placespeak.com/englishmanriver See page A33

May to visit local riding Green Party leader in the news apologizing for her language and bad joke this week
Green Party of Canada Leader Elizabeth May is returning to the riding that includes Parksville Qualicum Beach later this month for a few events. She’ll be touring with Glenn Sollitt, the Green Party’s candidate in Courtenay-Alberni. They’ll start their tour at Darwin’s Café in Tofino on Friday, May 22 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. From there, they’ll travel over to the east coast of Vancouver Island, to Vancouver Island University’s Marine Field Station in Deep Bay. The public is invited to join May, Sollitt and Field Station Manager Brian Kingzett for a walkabout of the research facility starting at 5:15 p.m. Following that, there will be an opportunity for free appies and a cash wine bar before May speaks to the crowd at 6:15 p.m. The next morning, Saturday, May 23, starting at 8 a.m., the public is invited to join May and Sollitt for a free continental breakfast and beverages at the Smoke ’N Water Restaurant in the Pacific Shores Resort in Nanoose Bay. May was in the news this week after her awkward speech Saturday night at the annual parliamentary dinner in Ottawa. In part of the speech, May suggested convicted (in the U.S.) terrorist Omar Khadr has “more class than the whole f---ing cabinet.” — Submitted by Courtenay Alberni Federal Green Party of Canada

More than 10,000 students from across B.C. competed, 240 made the provincial finals, and one student from Qualicum Beach took home a top award in this year’s pan-provincial French public speaking competition, Concours d’art oratoire. Benjamin Noel, a Grade 6 early immersion student at Ecole Oceanside Elementary, placed second in the province for his speech, “Comment les enfants peuvent changer le monde.” Other provincial finalists from this school district were: Victor Kamel (Grade 7) and Leila Indira Mohabeer-Ortiz (Grade 8). “In addition to the cultural and language benefits, Concours d’art oratoire helps students develop their creative and public speaking abilities, as well as self-confidence,” said Patti Holm, President of Canadian Parents for French B.C. and Yukon.

‘I hope they’re proud’ continued from page a1
Chambers said he’s thankful to his parents, Julie and Gary Chambers of Qualicum Beach, who have “absolutely” been a tremendous support throughout his career. “I hope they’re proud,” he said. “They’ve been extremely supportive… The hardest part is being away from home all the time.” At the end of his month-long posting in Ottawa, Chambers said he is heading off to play with the Canadian Forces national soccer team. The 2015 season of the National Sentry Program launched April 9 and will run until November 11. The program has expanded and uses a rotation of sentries from the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air Force. A government issue news release describes
the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier as “Canada’s most iconic and visible reminder of the service and sacrifice of members of the Canadian Armed Forces.” In May 2000, the remains of an unidentified Canadian soldier who died in the First World War were repatriated from France and, with great ceremony, were buried in a special tomb in front of the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was created to honour more than 116,000 Canadians who sacrificed their lives in the cause of peace and freedom. The Unknown Soldier represents all Canadians, whether they be navy, army, air force or merchant marine, who died or may die for their country in all conflicts — past, present and future.

The images and stories from Nepal after such a devastating earthquake are hard to ignore and businesses in Qualiucm Beach are urging each other to contribute to the relief effort and make a difference from one village to another. Jean Young from Arbutus Lifestyles is challenging the businesses in Qualicum Beach to put aside $5 a day for 30 days and match her contribution of $150.

Young and the Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce are partnering with the Qualicum Beach Rotary Sunrise and Disaster Aid Canada in support of the relief efforts currently underway in Nepal. The money we raise will be used to send Disaster Aid kits to a Tindhara, a remote mountain village where 98 per cent of the homes were levelled and 34 people were killed. A donation of $750 will provide a
family of 10 a disaster aid kit which includes items such as a 3-room tent, water filtration system, hygiene kits, etc. Any caring residents of Qualicum Beach (not just businesses) up to the challenge can bring their cheques into the chamber office at 124 West 2nd Ave. between 8:30 a.m and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday before noon on May 22. — NEWS Staff/ Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce

R
ing-ring. Ring-ring. Reception desk in Hades: Hello? This is Hell, how can’t I help you? Caller: I was wondering what day and time you are hosting the snowball fight? Hades: Huh? Come again? We’re busy down here making life miserable for people, so if this is a prank call, we admire your jerk-ness, but go away. Caller: Well, the New Democratic Party just won an election in Alberta, so surely it’s freezing down there. After 44 years of Progressive Conservative governments led by the likes of Peter Lougheed, Don Getty and Ralph Klein, the NDP won a majority in the Wild Rose province last week. NDP leaders in Ottawa and Victoria were almost giddy, trying to talk about how this result could help their causes. Could this Alberta result have an effect on what plays out in B.C. politics, or, more specifically, the future of policies related to the Salish Sea off Parksville Qualicum Beach? That’s difficult to determine right now. A provincial election is more than two years away — a lot of good and bad can happen for the NDP in that time. Smug comments like the one from provincial Energy Minister Bill Bennett, as reported by Black Press, won’t help the B.C. Liberals’ cause. “It took 44 years to elect an NDP government in Alberta,” said Bennett. “We’ve got 30 years left.” It makes more sense that the federal NDP would see some benefit, some push, from the result in Alberta — the federal election is only months away. It’s important to note policies — and membership expectations — of the Alberta NDP and the B.C. NDP differ in many ways. The Alberta NDP isn’t about to turn Fort McMurray into a ghost town, although early comments from premier-elect Rachel Notley about increasing corporate taxes during a time of layoffs in the oil patch will not be welcome in that industry. And the Alberta NDP is on the record in favour of the TransMountain pipeline twinning plan from Alberta to Burnaby. We’re not sure where B.C. NDP Leader John Horgan and his party stand on this issue, but we hear loud opposition from many on his side of the political spectrum. Premier Christy Clark had a strained relationship with a recent Progressive Conservative premier from Alberta. Perhaps, oddly, she will find a better working relationship with the new NDP premier. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters On electiOn predictiOns: Ain’t demOcrAcy GrAnd?
That was the week that was for startling election results and for pompous and pretentious punditocracy and pollsters getting things so very wrong again. Carbon copies of British Columbia’s last election fiasco; right up to election day exactly two years ago, they forecast the B.C. NDP to win easily and form government, but instead B.C. Liberals got an increased majority with a fourth kick at the can in Victoria. Last Tuesday, the Alberta provincial elections produced a result that really came out of left field; an amazing Orange Tide swept across Canada’s most conservative province and became an Alberta Tsunami washing away the Progressive Conservatives like so much flotsam and jetsam. Premier Prentice sailed his already-faltering PC ship of state onto the rocks by bringing forth a very ill-planned budget and then arrogantly calling an election a year early. When he was left high and dry on Tuesday evening, he abandoned ship in similar cowardly fashion we saw at Isola del Giglio, Italy in January 2012. Captain Francesco Schettino is serving jail time for his reckless barratry; presumably Captain Prentice will get off with a little penance, and will most likely get a well-paying job as a media pundit to tide him over until something even more lucrative floats over the horizon. The British election on Thursday was also “too close to call” according to all the press and political pundits; they forecast the left-of-centre Labour Party reaching a stalemate with the Conservatives, and then forming a coalition with the separatist Scottish National Party. Of course, we’ve seen that scenario before in Ottawa, only with a name changed here and there. However, the voters again proved the highfalutin punditocracy and pollsters horribly wrong, by giving the British Tory Party a clear majority. After B.C.’s election there was much navel-gazing, trying to figure out what went wrong in the polling business; no doubt

more navels are being gazed into right now, all across Alberta and the United Kingdom. Pundits and pollsters should take note from Alexis de Tocqueville who said: “In a democracy, the people get the government they deserve.” They should never forget the words of wisdom from Sir Winston Churchill: “It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government, except all the others that have been tried.” Have no idea who first said: “Ain’t democracy grand,” but they sure got that one right, eh?
nocent people are interred in horrific labour camps. The gleeful, arrogant attack on Christians shows no respect or consideration for millions of people who have been blessed by faith in Jesus Christ. Nor does it show compassion or sympathy for those who are being raped and murdered right now — all over the world — for simply being Christians. One has to feel immensely sorry for such narrow-minded people. Instead of wasting time attacking others, they might go out and help someone.

christiAn bAsed Western GenerOsity be cAreful this helps the WOrld summer: Keep dOGs I was saddened to read, yet again, anOut Of hOt cArs other virulent diatribe against Christianity by some atheists in Qualicum Beach in a recent letter to the editor. They obviously take great pleasure in being so spiteful. They choose to ignore (or perhaps never knew) the fact that the Western world (Europe and North America) and its Christian basis has given more peace and prosperity to millions of people than any other group. Christian values of integrity, honesty, rights for women, forgiveness, tolerance, kindness and charity have blessed millions of people through 2,000 years. Today, whenever there is a catastrophe in the world, it is the West that is called upon to respond — not Asia, Russia, the Middle East, Africa or South America. That response stems from our Christianity. Certainly Jesus was militant. He had to be to fight against evil and the oppressive Roman rulers. Christians don’t claim to be perfect but Christianity offers people a positive choice. If atheists don’t like our Christian-based society, I suggest they move to other countries where there is no Christian influence. In many of these countries, atheists are flogged, by the way. The ultimate atheist society is of course North Korea, where half the population is starving and hundreds of thousands of in-
On Friday, May 8 my grandson and I were in downtown Qualicum Beach, outside enjoying an ice cream and the beautiful hot sun, when we see this dog in a car with the windows cracked, but in the hot sun. My grandson (10 years old) was upset seeing the dog bark and bark in the hot car, as the car was parked in the direct sun. We were wondering who should be called — is there a number to report such cruelty? There should be a bylaw of some kind and telephone numbers posted around town so we can report these acts of cruelty, with quick action so dogs can be rescued from cars and owners fined We all know the reasons, like my dog won’t stay home alone. Well, my response to this is: train your dogs. This can be done if some time and effort is put into training and not just putting your pet in the car and leaving it to suffer in the hot sun. And please keep your dogs on the leash at the parks and at the beach in our beautiful Qualicum Beach. Summer is just around the corner, let’s all enjoy it. deBorAh BurleS Qualicum Beach See MORE LETTERS, page A12

auxiliaries’ work I recently attended the 70th anniversary of the British Columbia Association of Hospital Auxiliaries (BCAHA) and once again was proud of what auxiliaries in B.C. do. The Vancouver Island auxiliaries (17 in all) gave 261,418 volunteer hours and donated $1,365,955, while the total for BCAHA auxiliaries was $7,372,497. Our Parksville Auxiliary is the Trillium Lodge Auxiliary Society and we provide many services for residents there. We have a ‘tuck shop’, sponsor a hair salon, do nail grooming, bake for teas and, when requested, provide items for the residents. We recently purchased iPods and
headphones which the residents are enjoying. Mary SMith, preSident trilliuM lodge auxiliary Parksville
lets drop the ‘militant’ attitude Re: Militant Christians letter to the editor (The NEWS, April 23). Militancy in any arena, religious or otherwise, is dangerous and threatens the individual freedoms we as Canadians hold dear. We can all cite examples of horrendous things that haves been done “in the name of religion.” We can also select excerpts from any
doctrine to support our position on a particular issue. I would invite letter writers Fern and Laurence Wayman to not limit their knowledge of Jesus’ teachings to Matthew 10, Verse 35 (verse 34 in the King James version). If anyone takes the time to really study Christ’s true message, it is one of love, which encompasses, among other things, tolerance, joy, compassion, service and peace of mind. The various Charters of Rights and Freedoms and constitutions of modern democratic societies certainly bear similarities to the principles Jesus taught, and those individuals who drafted such previous documents, while perhaps Christians, did not do so as the Waymans state “predicated on the assur-
A13
ance that all Canadians are believers in the supremacy of their God,” but rather predicated on the assurance that justice, equality and freedom for all citizens would be preserved. Devaluing these principles has resulted in devaluing individual worth, and frankly, as far as the line in our national anthem “God keep our land, glorious and free” is concerned, we’re not doing a very good job of that on our own. Since the Waymans identify themselves as militant atheists, does that not put them in the same arena as militant Christians? Where does it end? Can we please drop the militant attitude, and replace it with tolerance? leSlie Macdonald Parksville

■ Certified Pedorthist
One of the most troublesome complications of Diabetes strikes the feet first. Elevated blood DR. KATIA sugar damages small blood vessels in the feet LANGTON which causes damage to sensory nerves. As these nerves are dying; symptoms include throbbing, numbness, tingling or burning in the feet, the sensation of bugs crawling on your skin, and sharp, shooting pain down the legs. As we lose sensation in the feet, we lose the ability to know when our tissues are being injured. Imagine a rock in your shoe and not being able to feel it, or walking for a long time without the messages back to your brain warning you when you need to rest, get off your feet or change your footwear. Sensory neuropathy (nerves dying) destroys our ability to protect our feet from injury. The best defence against tissue damage common in peripheral neuropathy is to prevent injury in the first place. This can be done through preventative foot checks, callus removal, protective footwear and orthotics specifically for the Neuropathic foot. All people with Diabetes should have a foot screening exam at least every 12 months. Call us today. Coverage under NIHB, DVA, Social Services and direct billing to extended benefits.

BOWSER’S SUMMER MARKET
It’s a ‘real mishmash of everything’ The market runs every Wednesday from June 10 to August 26 CandaCe Wu news@pqbnews.com
Flowers are blooming in Bowser and the community’s third annual summer market is getting ready to kick off next month. The Bowser Magnolia Court Summer Market runs every Wednesday from June 10 to August 26. “It’s a real mishmash of everything,” said organizer Corinne Roby, who started the market in 2012 after noticing a need in the community. Roby said there will be baked goods, fresh fruits and vegetables, art and other products, only excluding used items. Additionally, organizers are expecting live entertainment every Wednesday. Roby said she already has some interesting events lined up for the summer including: Peter Manson and Company music, free yoga on the lawn, tai chi demonstrations and the Rainbow Stew Cloggers are booked for July 29 and August 19 at 6 p.m. “The whole idea is to get people in our shopping area in Bowser,” said Roby, noting it caters to locals, but also people passing through en route to Parksville or Courtenay. Table rentals are $15 for dropins or $10 per table if you sign up for the whole season. All proceeds from table rentals are donated to a community organization. This year, Roby said proceeds will go to the Nile Creek Restoration Enhancement Society. Roby said the market is small and intimate, like the communi-

ty of Bowser itself. “Generally we have about 30 to 35 people milling around and we have a fair amount of space,”
she said. “A lot of the shops stay open late and we make sure we have some food vendors and options for drinks.”
For more information or to reserve a table contact Corinne Roby at 250-947-5231 or Sarah Hutchinson at 250-937-1879.
The Bowser Magnolia Court Summer Market will run from June 10 to August 26 every Wednesday except for July 1.

Decosmos fine arts group
Showing art made from the heart
Fifty-one artists to submit work JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pqbnews.com
The members of Parksville’s DeCosmos Fine Arts Group will hang their hearts on the wall as opposed to wearing them on their sleeves next month. For their annual show, which starts on June 2 at the McMillan Arts Centre, the group has chosen the theme Art from the Heart. “All our art comes from our heart,” said the show’s co-ordinator Vivien Frow. According to Frow, 51 of the group’s 95 members will exhibit work in the show. With such a large number of participants, president of the DeCosmos Bernice Stearns said that each artist will only be allowed to enter one piece or else there wouldn’t be enough room for everyone. When it comes to content, however, there were no restrictions given. As such, there will be a number of different mediums shown, including all types of

painting, photography and possible some three-dimensional art, said Frow. “It covers everything,” she
said. One of the group’s photographers, Penny Marshall, said she will submit an image called
Hellebores, which is named after the flowers it depicts. “I’m a naturalist,” she said, describing her love of getting
close to nature. “My passion has always been closer photography.” Stearns, on the other hand, said she will enter a silk painting called Relaxation. The semi-abstract work attempts to capture the ease of an eagle flying in a storm. “I try to get the shapes and colours,” she said. Frow will also submit a painting, though hers is not on silk. Titled Jellybean Row, Frow’s work depicts some of the colourful homes she saw on a trip to Newfoundland. “I was stunned by the colours,” she said, adding that her guide has called the structures “jellybean houses.” This annual show is the only joint exhibit the DeCosmos Fine Arts Group will have all year, said Stearns. The group does, however, informally display some of their works throughout the year at the Parksville Library and the Parksville Community and Conference Centre. Several individual members also host their own full-scale shows. See ArtiStS, page A24
Painting the action of sailing Artist had to find the courage to pick up art again after bad experiences JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pqbnews.com
Jessica skeLton photo
The large-scale oil painting created by Qualicum Beach artist Judy Button showcases her passion for sailing.
Judy Button may not hesitate when she goes to take the helm of a racing sailboat, but she didn’t have the same bravado when it came to picking up her arts supplies again. “I was terrified,” she said. “I had a really bad experience in high school.” The Qualicum Beach based painter need not have worried, however. After finally getting the courage to attend several art classes in the Toronto area in 2002 and plenty of practice after that, the painter recently landed her third show. “She does beautiful work,” said Bonnie Luchtmeijer, who co-owns the Gallery @ Qualicum Art Supply, the space where some of Button’s large-scale oil works currently reside. “She just came in and gave me her business card.” Not surprisingly, a majority of the paintings in Button’s exhibit showcase her love for sailing. It’s a passion that started in childhood, when she would sail out of Montreal, she said. And even though she turned away from sailing during her youth, Button got right back into it when she met her husband. They’ve spent many years cruising around Vancouver and the large waterways of Central Canada.
Now that they’re living on the West Coast, however, Button said they’ve have turned their sights from cruising to racing. Aside from entering competitions nearly every weekend in the summer, the couple also plans to enter the Van Isle 360 for the second time this year. It’s the action she experiences during these races — be it a full sail or the foam of a wave — that Button said she tries to capture on canvas. In order to help her do this, the painter said she bases her impressionistic paintings off of sailing photographs she gets from friends, family and other sources. “I try to put in my perspective,” she said. “I never saw anything in the water (before) and now I do.” Another challenge that Button faces in her work is the fact that her ocean-based scenes are, by default, very blue. So, the artist said she tries to warm up the image by using complimentary colours like yellow and orange. “I’m pretty much seat-of-my-pants when it comes to painting,” she said. All of this work, however, isn’t done with the dollar in mind. For Button, it’s all about the love of painting her passion — another reason why her current show at the Gallery is only her third exhibition. “I haven’t been in the business of selling,” she said. “I enjoy it … It makes me feel creative.” If you’d like to see Button’s work, the Gallery is open Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sat. 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

The funds will go directly into running the VICD program. This Qualicum Beach based charity helps veterans and others manage their symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder by matching them with rescue dogs. VICD president Barb Ashmead said it costs around $10,000 to train each human/canine team. Just before the cheque presentation, Ashmead also announced that the VICD’s recent raffle for a pair of WestJet tickets raised over $10,000 in five weeks’ time for the charity.

Earth Science class to host fundraiser for Nepal Disaster hit while students were studying earthquakes JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pqbnews.com
Heather Deering’s Earth Science 11 was studying plate tectonics, volcanoes and earthquakes when the magnitude 7.8 quake hit Nepal last month. The coincidence turned into positive action, however, as the Ballenas Secondary School class has decided to host a car wash fundraiser to help the overseas relief effort. “It created a relevance for them,” said Deering. “They had a lot of questions.” The idea came from Grade 12 student Wyatt Vass, who responded to his teacher’s request for ideas on how the class could make a difference. “It just kinda came to me,” he said, adding that he figured raising money in some way would be the “best idea since we’re so far away.” Deering is proud of her students’ compassion and empathy. “As an educator, I want them to look
beyond their own lives,” she said. “I think there are some amazing and powerful students… who might not have the opportunity to give back.” As such, the BSS teacher has invited the other earth science class and the rest of the school to join in the fundraiser. So far, the COMPASS class and some international students have signed up. “It’s such an amazing school community,” said Deering, who graduated from VIU’s teaching program last year. “It’s such an honour to be a part of it.” Deerling is also looking to local businesses to donate supplies, sponsor a BBQ, match donations or commit to the fundraiser in some other way. “It is truly going to be a community builder for this school and the Oceanside area,” she said in an e-mail. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to the Red Cross. The car wash will take place on Saturday, May 30 in the Ballenas student parking lot from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. The suggested minimum donation for a car wash is $5.

Social services workers to receive awards of excellence
Do you know a community social service worker who goes above and beyond the call in Parksville Qualicum Beach? The Community Social Services Employers Association (CSSEA) is putting out the call for nominees for the first B.C. Community Social Services Awards of Excellence, sponsored by Telus. Launched May 1, the awards are designed to celebrate B.C.’s publicly funded community social services sector and recognize the sector’s most important asset, its employees who provide vital services to the most vulnerable people in our communities, according to a news release from the CSSEA.
“We are excited to celebrate the accomplishments of the outstanding workers in the community social services sector,” said Gentil Mateus, CEO of CSSEA. “Recognizing these extraordinary employees is a meaningful way to showcase the important work community social services workers perform every day in our province.” Awards will be presented in four categories: • Rising Star: An individual with less than five years’ experience in the community social services sector who demonstrates early success and great promise as a future leader.
• Hero: Someone who goes the extra mile to make a difference in community social services — someone all staff can look to for inspiration. • Leader: A formal or informal leader, mentor, or team builder who has brought fresh ideas to the social services field and created positive and lasting change. • Legend: An individual with 15 or more years of experience in the community social services sector who has made extraordinary contributions to the community and to the sector. The winners will be recognized and celebrated at a luncheon as part of CSSEA’s 2015

You climb into a boat and the guide asks if you want to see sea lions along the beach, or hike into the rainforest highland to a group of waterfalls. Turn to look behind you and see two more people in the boat, the outboard wake behind them. Look up and see trees reaching to the sky and raindrops falling on B.C.’s Central Coast near Nimmo Bay. A floating wilderness lodge with Adirondack chairs and a crackling firepit await your return. The Wild Within, a virtual reality experience produced by Destination B.C. is the first for North American destination marketing.
Its December launch in New York and Washington was covered by 94 media outlets including National Geographic, USA Today, Time, Outside, Lonely Planet, Wall Street Journal, Wired and Ad Week magazine. The video is experienced with virtual reality goggles and a stereo headset, a system developed by Samsung. It supplements conventional promotional videos, and is being presented at tourism trade shows and travel media events across Canada and in Beijing and Shanghai in June. To view the video and another showing how it was made, go to www.youtube.com and search for “Destination BC The Wild Within.”

DEATHS
DEATHS
CARL GUNNAR LUNDBERG
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carl Gunnar Lundberg, 82, on Monday, May 4th, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Edith (Northway), his son Daniel, his daughter Linda and her partner Alan, sister June (Richardson) and many other family members and friends.  He was preceded in death by his sister Ruth (McBride). Carl was born on August 12, 1932 in Bella Bella and grew up in Ocean Falls and Vancouver. His love of the sea was evident as he spent his life as a commercial salmon fisherman, first as a youngster with his father Joseph, then later with his own son Dan. In the early seventies, he earned his Captain’s Ticket. He fished many boats, but the “TRADEWIND was his pride and joy.  After retiring from fishing, he and Edith moved from Langley to Qualicum Beach, where he enjoyed woodworking and creating oak furniture.  He was quite the history buff and loved to read and do crossword puzzles. He was always up for a good card game, from bridge to poker and most recently his daily crib games with his family. He looked forward to baseball season and cheering on his favourite team, the Toronto Blue Jays.
No service will be held. A memorial tea will take place at a later date. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society are appreciated.

Arrowsmith Lake was chosen because it could provide the required storage and the geography of the area allowed for the construction of a dam. It is interesting to note Arrowsmith Lake represents about 1.5% of the total Englishman River watershed area. With the dam in place, the lake now provides a much larger proportion of river water flows during the summer.
1994 UPSTREAM INTAKE PLAN
MARK YOUR CALENDAR!
Bring your questions about the project to one of next week’s public info sessions; staff and consultants will be available to respond to your concerns.
FISHERIES BENEFITS
Today the Arrowsmith Dam and resulting summer flow augmentation has made significant fisheries improvements to the Englishman River and will continue to do so after the fully licensed amount is being used. This will allow for benefits to the river fishery and community water supply to extend well into the future. Regardless of the intake location, the flow requirements laid out in the licence will be met along the entire length of the river with the continued benefit to fish and our community.
PREPARED BY KOERS & ASSOCIATES ENGINEERING LTD
PROPOSED INTAKE LOCATION
Between 2000 and 2005, engineering studies were commissioned focusing on the future water intake location. This work took into account a sustainable approach weighing environmental, financial and social factors with the best location downstream of the originally proposed intake at the confluence of the South Englishman River. Meetings were held with health authorities, DFO and provincial fisheries and regulators to discuss this option. In 2011, Associated Engineering (BC) Ltd. finalized the report and concluded the best location for the downstream intake location is just above the Highway 19 Bridge. The report also concluded both future water supply and fisheries flow requirements can be achieved by the release of additional flows from the Arrowsmith Dam during critical summer months. In 2012, a change of works application was approved by the province to locate the water intake just above Highway 19 on the right bank in Top Bridge Park owned by the City of Parksville. The proposed intake is a river side inlet structure.
INTAKE STRUCTURES
Many different technologies and structures were reviewed to best determine the most suitable for operating, ease of withdrawal and environmental impact. These intake structures were reviewed: » River side inlet (chosen inlet type) » Obermeyer weir » Coanda screens » Riverbank filtration wells » Submerged intake » River bottom infiltration gallery » River side intake pond » River side infiltration gallery

World class golf in Qualicum Beach Canada’s best young golfers compete in the CN Future Links Pacific Championship T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
If the CN Future Links Pacific Championship was any indication, the future of golf in Canada is in good hands. Grace St. Germain, from Ottawa, Ontario, and Trevor Ranton, from Waterloo, Ontario, were crowned the winners of their respective junior girls and boys divisions after three rounds of golf under beautiful conditions. The top boys and girls from across Canada were at Pheasant Glen Golf Course this past weekend for a three–day tournament that saw two hole-inone’s, a double-eagle on a par five and an opening round seven under par from the eventual junior boys champion. Not to be outdone, the girls had a tight battle at the top of the leader board all weekend, so tight that they needed two extra holes of golf in a sudden death playoff to determine a winner. St. Germain, 16 years old, beat out Michelle Kim (Vancouver) on the second hole of the sudden-death playoff. St. Germain nailed about a six-foot put for birdie and the win, shooting a three-day score of 218 (+2). “I’ve kind of gotten used to playoffs,” St. Germain said. “I wasn’t too nervous, so it was alright. Michelle is good competition, so I was nervous about that but that’s about as nervous as I got.” Ranton, 18 years old, set a

personal best and a course record low round on the opening day of the tournament, firing an
impressive 65 (-7). He then followed that up with two more rounds under par (69
and 70) to win the tournament on the boys side with a threeday score of 204 (-12).
“It felt pretty good,” Ranton said. “I hadn’t gone low like that in an event before. I felt really good on the course, I was making a lot of putts.” “When I got off the course, I couldn’t really believe that I shot that well. I just wanted to make sure to try and play that well the rest of the way and luckily I was able to.” Carson Arcuri and Jake Lane were two of the locals in the field from Qualicum Beach. Both Arcuri and Lane, who hails from Fort St. John, attend Kwalikum Secondary School and are on the KSS golf team. Arcuri had a tough weekend, finishing tied for 56th at +23. Lane meanwhile finished tied for 16th with a score of +6. “Overall, the tournament went alright,” Lane said. “It was the first big tournament of the year and I felt like I didn’t quite play up to my standards. I was able to scramble and putt well for the most part though, which helped. Playing on a course you practise on all the time was great too, it helped me out a lot.” “The course was in really great shape,” Trevor Ranton said. “It’s a really nice course and I enjoyed playing it.” “The way it’s set up, for me, I didn’t have to worry about using my driver all that much so I could keep it straight with the irons. The greens were fast and true, which can make it tough but I had the putter going thankfully.”

Royals lose after impressive comeback attempt T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
In a game that started off slow, the Quality Foods Parksville Royals came back to make the final two innings exciting, but came up short in a 10-6 loss to the Nanaimo Pirates. The Pirates were leading 9-0 heading in to the sixth, where the Royals were able to put one on the board to avoid the mercy rule. Nanaimo would make it 10-1 in the bottom of the sixth. The Royals then made it interesting in the seventh, putting five runs on the board with a chance for a few more before they were put away. “It was an alright game all-around,”
head coach Dave Wallace said. “We started off the game very slow. Our pitching wasn’t quite where we wanted it to be and we just couldn’t hit the ball. Those last two innings, our bats came alive and we were able to put some runs on the board. But it was just too little, too late in the end.” It was the only game the Royals played last week, with a rare weekend off. This week isn’t much different, as the Royals play a handful of exhibition games over the long weekend, rather than hosting B.C.’s Best Baseball Tournament, a recent staple for that weekend. “The tournament sort of ran it’s course,” Wallace said. “We’ve been putting it on for 20 years and I think the whole finan-
cial side of things was getting to be too much for some teams. That and the fact that it’s basically just our league and then a couple out of town teams. It was a great tournament for us to host and brought in a good bit of economy to the city but now we get a chance to look at hosting some other tournaments.” The Royals’ next official game is May 20, when they host the Pirates (6 p.m. start). This gives the Royals time to work on their game, including consistency. “It’s a tough thing, trying to get consistent,” Wallace said. “It comes down to being focused for seven innings, keep the concentration on the game all the way through. Emotional maturity is a big fac-
tor as well; we need to have that leadership from our senior players. Basically like one shift at a time in hockey, we need to take it one pitch at a time when we’re out there.” The time will give the players a chance to not only practice the finer things but heal as well. The Royals were without four players in Nanaimo, including three pitchers. “I think the time off helps,” Wallace said. “It’ll give our guys a chance to rest up that are hurt and help us get better where we need to get better. Having the time between games can be good in that aspect but it’s also a good thing to get in that groove of playing every weekend too.”

MOTHER’S DAY RUN: It was all smiles as almost 300 people came out for the Oceanside Running Association’s Mother’s Day 10K walk/run in Parksville on Sunday. Royd Burkart of Port Alberni had the fastest time (36:01) with Nanaimo’s Jessica McKierahan leading the women (46:07).

Rumble at the Rink will be historic T yson Taylor
sports@pqbnews.com
History is going to be made, on two different accounts, on May 23 at the “Rumble at the Rink” in Nanaimo at the Frank Crane Arena. With Gordy Racette becoming the first Canadian to fight in five decades and two title fights, it’s going to be an action filled night. Local boy Aubrey “Bam Bam” Morrow will fight in the main event for the Western Canadian Middleweight championship, as he takes
on two-time title challenger Paul Bzdel. Also in a title fight, a rematch from last year’s fight of the night at the Port Theater, will be Peggy Maerz going up against Alisah McPhee for the CPBC western Canadian title. Also on the card will be former UFC fighter and sparring partner for Manny Pacquiao, Dashon Johnson. He’ll take on a scrappy opponent in Chris Aucoin, who won an entertaining fight last year at the Port

Theater as well. Local legend Gordy Racette will take on Sandy Pembroke in a bout that will make history for Racette, who will be the third man in the history of boxing and the first Canadian to fight in five decades. Saoul Mombay, of the United States, and the legendary Roberto Duran, from Panama, are the other two. The event will also feature amateur fights, in association with Combsport. “It’s going to be an excit-
ing night of fights,” Gloved Up Promotions’ Terry Strawson said. “Our two title fights are going to be great bouts.” “The fight between Dashon and Chris should be an entertaining one; both of their styles are very exciting for fight fans. Then, of course, with Gordy making history in his fight, that’s going to be something special to watch and it should be a good bout as well, with Pembroke’s last fight being for the Canadian Cruiserweight title.”
