Area D/Rural Grand Forks residents got the chance to hear about the official community plan at a session held on May 5 at the Grand Forks Senior’s Hall. Roly Russell, Area D director, said it was a good turnout and that residents were very engaged. “The main goal was to go over where we are at with the official community plan (OCP) and talk about the current draft of that plan,” said Russell. Russell said the OCP is very important as it as a policy document that guides the decision making for the region for the next several years. The current OCP was adopted in 1999 and is being reviewed. To come up with an updated OCP, a steering committee was formed and a questionnaire was sent out to all property owners in January 2013. The steering committee is expected to deliver the revised OCP to the RDKB board of directors to be endorsed. “We had conversations about different aspects of it like agriculture as well as sensitive areas like environmentally sensitive areas, gravel pits, you name it,” he said. Russell said it’s great to be able

to get input from the public regarding the OCP. He said the feedback they received was very good. “We’ll continue to receive feedback,” he said. “People can email, call and so on now that they’ve heard where we’re at with the plan.” The OCP outlines goals for Area D/Rural Grand Forks in several areas including growth and development; public participation; rural character; settlement pattern; agricultural land use; and affordable housing. It also lists objectives and policies including provincial jurisdiction objective; rural character objectives; agricultural objectives; and extensive agricultural objective. The OCP also includes sections on implementation of the plan and land use maps. “Popular topics for discussion are agriculture and secondary dwellings on agricultural land and park and trails,” he said. “The development of a parks system in rural Grand Forks. Those are probably the key components.” The OCP steering committee consists of Russell; alternate Area D director Brian Taylor; members of the Area D Advisory Planning Commission; along with other residents of Area D.

This week in history The body of aviation hero Charles Lindbergh’s baby is found on this day in 1932, more than two months after he was kidnapped from his family’s Hopewell, New Jersey, mansion. Lindbergh, who became the first worldwide celebrity five years earlier when he flew The Spirit of St. Louis across the Atlantic, and his wife Anne discovered a ransom note in their 20-month-old child’s empty room on March 1. The kidnapper had used a ladder to climb up to the open second-floor window and had left muddy footprints in the room. The ransom note demanded $50,000 in barely literate English. www.history.com

Ebby came to our family through the rescue agency SCARS in Alberta. Her background is familiar to rescue agencies as she was found up in Northern Alberta at a garbage dump eating whatever she could find. Ebby loves to watch TV and will come from anywhere in the house if she spots an animal on the TV, barking follows this encounter. Something else that can get her attention in a hurry is the sound of a slice of cheese being opened. She is a very loyal dog, loves the outdoors and in the summer you can find her jumping off the dock into the lake. How to enter your pet: It’s free. Deer numbers are peaking again CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

The city is continuing to address the deer issue in town as they work towards a cull. Gary Smith and Jenny Coleshill of the Grand Forks Deer Committee gave a verbal report and presentation to council at the COTW meeting on May 4. The pair talked about the deer count, urban deer collaring and other projects the committee is looking at to combat the deer issue. “We just wanted to give you an update as to where the deer collaring project is standing now and on the deer count,” said Smith, the chair of the deer committee. “On the 21st, a group of us went out at 6 a.m. in the five zones that we’ve carved out for the city and counted 166 deer. That number probably represents half of what we have.” Coleshill said that the committee does deer counts twice a year in the spring and fall. “We try to do it at the same time each year,” she said. “The numbers have gone up and down. There was a big peak in 2009 and then it’s gone down. It appears they’re peaking again.” Smith said the deer collaring program started in November last year and involved attaching radio collars to nine deer. The collars allow the committee to track the deer and see what kinds of migration patterns are present. Seven deer are currently being monitored: one deer was killed,

and one had its collar removed because of chafing. The deer committee is an adhoc committee, which meets regularly and makes recommendations to council. Council accepted the presentation as information. Recently, council voted to give bylaw enforcement more power to fine people feeding the deer. Smith said he has not aware of anyone being fined yet. “It takes a written complaint,” he said. “We’ve been talking about this for so long but someone’s going to have to do something and that’s going to take the public stepping up and keeping an eye out.” Smith said the committee is working towards a deer cull. “I’m trying to line this up with other communities because the province has committed resources like the clover traps and whatnot,” he said. “They’ve made a soft commitment and we’re trying to harden it up.” Smith said that ideally the traps would be passed around from community to community during a certain time window. “Invermere gets them for a week and a half, Cranbrook gets them for a week and a half, Grand Forks gets them for a week and a half,” said Smith. Smith said it’s also important to consult with RDKB Area D/Rural Grand Forks to come up with a strategy so that deer from the rural area don’t just come in and fill in the vacuum left after the cull.

to expand the park an additional 30 metres and for assistance in installing, purchasing and implementing a simple shelter. She also asked for the placing of a porta potty and the creation of steps from the parking lot to the park entrance to improve safety. Several members of council asked several questions, including whether they were asking for funding and la-

Students get unexpected day off CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

A sewer back-up at Perley Elementary School resulted in an unexpected day off for students. The school was closed on Tuesday, May 5 due to the back-up. Crews quickly fixed the problem and school was back in session the following day. “We had a sewer blockage and it was causing a back-up through the drains in the bathroom,”

bour. “We have some money; probably enough to cover this project, barely,” Novokshonoff said. “What we’re asking for at this time in particular is the labour.” Councillor Julia Butler said that she had recently visited the dog park and was surprised at how small it is. “They could definitely use some expansion,” she said. “As long as it’s not encroaching on the burial sites. They’re supplying a lot of money up front. They’re asking the city for help up with it. It’s not like they’re coming to the city and asking for us to bear the full cost.”

Well, it was fun!

Butler said it was a worthwhile project and one that would not be too costly for the city. Sarah Winton, deputy corporate officer/communications, said the city would need to look at the costs associated with expansion and how much the dog park committee require. “The dog park people said the shelter would cost approximately $1,500,” she said. “There may be more required and the city would look at that if council decides to move forward with the improvements. There needs to be some work done to solidify costs on the proposed expansion.”

said Kevin Argue, superintendent for School District 51. “We had it for an afternoon on Monday (May 4) and thought we might get it solved prior to the end of the day but we weren’t able to confirm it so we made the decision to close the school just to give the opportunity to get it unplugged and make sure it was working.” Crews also sanitized the school after fixing the problem. Argue said that children were not sent home early on Monday, but those near the area most affected were moved. “We had a contractor in to ensure the line was clear,” said Argue. “We had a few smaller issues before but they seemed to take care of themselves. We figured we had better get it done and taken care of. We wanted to provide proper access to bathrooms and the desire to sanitize it properly is why we decided to close the school.” Argue said the cost for the repairs and cleaning are not known at this time. “We have an emergency situation fund that we’re able to access in the budget,” he said. “You have no way of knowing when they’ll arise but you have to deal with them as they arise.”

Local voices

We here in the Boundary may think we are isolated and far away from the power centres in the province of Vancouver and Victoria; however, there is no shortage of local voices speaking up for the area at the provincial level. In today’s Gazette, we feature a profile on Laranna Androsoff, who has just recently joined the Aboriginal Steering Committee for the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP). Androsoff is one of only seven members of the committee selected from throughout the province to help with HELP. Recently, Area C/Christina Lake director and RDKB board chair Grace McGregor was named to the province’s Rural Advisory Council. Of course, McGregor is no stranger to provincial organizations. She sits on both the Southern Interior Beetle Action Coalition (SIBAC) and Southern Interior Develop Initiative Trust (SIDIT) boards. She was also part of the Rural B.C. steering committee, which helped shape the Rural Advisory Council. Don Caskey is another local resident adding his voice to provincial matters. Caskey is one of the members of the seniors council, which represents the needs of seniors throughout B.C. and provides advice and feedback to the provincial seniors advocate. These three and many others like them are showing that we here in the Boundary do have a voice at all levels. And with these strong representatives advocating for us, we are in very good shape.

I’m not going to sing it, but I will say, “Hello in there” Reckonings DELLA MALLETTE Ya’ know that old trees just grow stronger, And old rivers grow wilder ev’ry day. Old people just grow lonesome Waiting for someone to say, “Hello in there, hello.” So if you’re walking down the street sometime And spot some hollow ancient eyes, Please don’t just pass ‘em by and stare as if you didn’t care, say, “Hello in there, hello.” – John Prine

Singer/songwriter John Prine wrote and recorded Hello In There and I haven’t been able to forget it from the moment I first heard it. He himself said he doesn’t think he’s every done a show without playing the song. “Nothing in it wears on me,” he said in an interview on

performingsongwriter.com. The song is about seniors, but I like to think it’s about hollow eyes of any age. The Multi-use Accommodation Agency Project (MAAP) garnered a lot of talk and press, both in support and against, but no one disputes the need for the services of the project. Those services, in one form or another, in one place of another, are needed. Talk of the project made me think of Prine’s words: “Don’t just pass ‘em by and stare as if you didn’t care.” Beggars and buskers are a very visible sign of poverty and/or homelessness. Sometimes, yes, it’s a lifestyle made by choice, but it doesn’t mean we should just pass ‘em by. Grand Forks doesn’t see many compared to larger cities, but I like to think our public opinion is becoming at least a tiny bit more sympathetic. I went to France and Italy last summer for a few weeks with a friend. Rita is well-travelled and

begging is something she’s seen all over. We have no train station in Grand Forks, just a Greyhound station with one bus west and one east per day—but Rita and I rode a lot of trains and were in a lot of stations. Fast trains, regional trains, metro trains—even a funicular. The stations are magnets for beggars and buskers. (Well, I didn’t see anyone at the funicular. It was a very small station and a very short ride. Steep, but short.) Signs throughout our trip proclaimed, “Beware of pickpockets.” But the streets and metro of the larger cities—Paris, in particular—were prevalent with buskers and beggars. I’m sure I would have seen the same thing in parts of Vancouver, or New York, or Los Angeles, but I was in Paris and it was shocking to a small-town girl like me. Some held their hands out and moved their mouths without making a sound; some sat on the cold

concrete of the underground stations and didn’t look at you; some were buskers who entertained you. I don’t think it’s legal on the Skytrain in Vancouver, but in Paris buskers are adept at hopping on train cars, setting up their portable amp, and playing for the commuters. An accordion player, drummers, singers, guitarists—a quick song, a quick pass of the cup, and they’d hop off at the next station to find another car. It was easier to put coins in their cups, than to acknowledge the beggars who silently put their hands out. In my endeavour to say, “Hello in there,” I felt guilty that I passed many by. I was intimidated, and am not sure I can get over that easily. I look at my credit card statement and convince myself the trip was necessary for my self-development. More traveling experience will help, I reckon. Rita’s heading to Africa next year…

Opinion

to the editor

Nesting boxes will be removed Editor, The Gazette: It’s amazing. Someone in the Hardy Mountain and Reservoir Road areas must dislike cavity nesting birds, such as bluebirds, chickadees, swallows and wrens. For the second year, they’ve smashed the lids of several nesting boxes. They likely used a heavy sledge hammer, because when I repaired last year’s boxes and made

some new ones, I used heavy, double headed nails at an angle through almost two inches of plywood. The nails either got bent, or the plywood was smashed, a difficult feat to accomplish. Whoever you are, you have won: once could be vandalism, but twice is deliberate. I have taken down 13 of the 16 nesting boxes in this area, leaving only three, occupied by bluebirds or

wrens. These boxes will be removed when vacant, and none of the boxes will be replaced. A sad defeat for Mother Nature and our area. In the last six years, the nesting boxes in our valley have fledged 866 young bluebirds, 204 wrens, 63 chickadees and 1,044 swallows. Dr. Ernest Whelan, Grand Forks

Targeted repair would cost less

Editor, The Gazette: I attended the latest council meeting where it was announced that there would be a contract made with the company who had just charged $7,000 for a study and given an estimate of a cost of up to $175,000 to remedy the situation. It seemed that they recommended filling in the whole gravel pit again but, during the short public input moments allowed after it had all been “decided,” I stated my opinion that there is, within basic con-

struction remedies, a concept known as “targeted repair,” which always costs far less and often is a far better solution that could easily be made to work— and save well over $100,000 of our tax money. It seemed that council and staff were not interested in exploring this avenue and there was no further discussion allowed on that subject. Earlier someone indicated that we need to leave such things to the experts. Councillor Butler tried to question

about the seemingly excessive expense but it didn’t go any further. Someone else, in another place, said that you have to be an engineer or a mason to understand the ins and outs of big construction and such financial arrangements. Really? Are there no engineers or masons out there who could confirm that a “targeted repair” would be a more viable solution in this situation? Seriously. James Hamilton, Grand Forks

Politicians, get your act together Editor, The Gazette: Abraham Lincoln in his wisdom once wrote, “Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people.” I know some people will say I have no right to complain about my elected city politicians, and I say I have every right—even an obligation—to voice my concern. I pay their salaries as do you; we are management, they are our employees; and we have every right to voice our concerns when we feel they are not doing a good job. Everyone running for office way back in November promised us a new openness, transparency and participation of the public yet secret meetings are still going on as well as “in camera” sessions discussing subjects we as taxpayers are not privy too. We were promised “down-

town revitalization.” A quick trip through downtown will attest to the fact that hasn’t happened. Water meters are still the albatross hanging around everyone’s neck. The past council in their collective wisdom (or not so collective wisdom since most of them were thrown out) chose not to ask the people of Grand Forks how they felt about the issue. A simple referendum questions would have been a wise decision on the previous council’s part. If the majority were in favour of meters, then so be it. Those opposed could sell their house and move out of town, those happy with the decision could stay and get radiated. Mentioning selling your home, sources tell me there are 160 properties for sale in the city, so good luck with that.

One hundred and sixty properties for sale in a town this size should raise red flags with our local government, something is up. I was on the other side of the world when I caught the headline in the Gazette online: “Doug Allin hired.” I thought maybe Prince George, Kelowna, or perhaps Vernon. I was shocked to learn he had been rehired in Grand Forks. My first thought was “the tail wagging the dog”—same tail, different dog. I am aware this letter won’t make me many friends on city council, but you know what? I don’t care. I am tired of the political crap that goes on in our city and I say to the politicians and beaurocrats to get your act together, it would be a welcome change. David Janzen, Grand Forks

New information for critics

For over a decade the temperature at Earth’s surface hasn’t risen as fast as it did in the 1990s and the information has given rise to a new campaign by the critics who challenge the data provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The information about the slower heating is being used to back up a claim that we are entering a new ice age rather than increased heating. At the centre of the controRousing versy is Michael Mann, a disthe Rabble tinguished professor of meteorology, director of Earth System ROY RONAGHAN Science Center and one of three scientists who produced the “hockey stick” graph that shows a rapid increase in Earth’s temperature after 1998. Mann does not dispute the claim that the warming trend has slowed considerably and he is working with other scientists to determine why. An article posted recently on CONSERVATIVEbyte.com by Tom Luongo cites the work of John Casey, a scientist who is president of the Space and Science Research Corporation (SSRC), an independent research organization in Orlando, Florida and author of Dark Winter. Casey debunks most of what the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has been telling us for the past two decades about Earth’s warming and claims that global warming is a $23 billion government scam. To support his position, Casey argues that the data showing the Earth hasn’t warmed more than a fraction of a degree in the past couple decades is indicative of changes in the sun’s activity and the beginning of the next ice age. For an explanation of the slower pace of warming, Mann states that oscillations in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans have created a “false pause” and when they cease global warming will accelerate. However, there is no sure way of telling when the cessation will occur. Which leaves us to ponder the future. Will it be warmer and wetter or colder and drier? Has the sun’s activity or some other unknown factor caused the change? Climate scientists are fully aware that their models are not prefect and they are engaged in an ongoing process of refining and improving them. Given Casey’s explanation, can we tell the Inuit hunters who are dependent on the ice forming early in winter and staying for a significant period that they will soon be able to hunt seals as they once did? Can we tell the people who live on tiny islands in the Pacific Ocean that they no longer need to worry about being inundated by rising ocean levels? Can we tell the farmers in California who have had to abandon their farms and their way of life that they will be back on the land in a few years? Should we stop our worry about polar bear survival? Mann and his colleagues are now trying to determine whether the Atlantic Ocean has become a “sink” for the storage of atmospheric heat and if it can be located, they will be able to determine how long the slowdown in warming will last. An earlier study argued that the heat had been stored in the Pacific Ocean by higher than usual trade winds combined with the El Nino-La Nifia cycle. If the heat is being stored in the Atlantic, the prediction is that we may have to wait 10-15 years for the warming trend to return to its previous intensity. Changes in ocean temperatures are tied to changes in currents and wind patterns and it could take years for them to reverse themselves. Mann predicts, “In the next decade we will likely begin to see the flip side-instead of slowing global warming, this internal oscillation will likely add to global warming. If so, we are in for a rude awakening.” Regardless what side we take in the debate, let us not be lulled into a false complacency.

It’s Time To

to the editor

Stop believing in hidden agenda democratically terminated or appointed by the elected council. Bullying, personal attacks, innuendo and intimidation, when used as a means to circumvent the democratic process, is a self-serving tyranny originating in righteousness. It means that I believe that my opinions matter more than those of my democratically elected representatives. A democracy is defined by the majority of the people. If my personal opinions do not match the majority opinion of the representatives elected by the majority of the taxpayers I need to accept that my opinion is simply out of step with the majority. To continually disagree with the actions of my elected representatives reminds me of the proud mother watching her son as he marched along with his Boy Scouts troop saying, “Oh look, everyone’s out of step except my son George!” We need to stop the conspiracy theories, stop believing that there’s a hidden agenda, stop believing that my neighbours are out to cheat me—and start acting like responsible and respectful adults. We elected this council to represent us to the best of their abilities—please give them a chance to do the jobs they’ve been hired to do. Peter Matheson, Grand Forks

Editor, the Gazette: As the one who in March made a motion which in effect stopped the Habitat for Humanity project, Councilor Chris Hammett now finds herself standing ankle deep in the old-Taylorcouncil quagmire. As per council tapes of the April 20 meeting, under unannounced authority, is Hammett releasing “in-camera” data of the Allin/Taylorcouncil dealings of November 2014? Is she in “contempt of council” under Chapter 90? Why not lay it all out? Then we have Councilor Wirischagin putting a motion forth to kill questions from the public at Committee of the Whole city meetings. How sweet! He and Councilor Krog stand much deeper in the Taylor council quagmire. Both were part of that past council. More smoke and

mirrors at City Hall is not what Grand Forks requires or deserves. From all appearances we will have to settle for drips and drabs of information on the $192,000 Allin pay-out…until someone spills the beans on it. Interesting is how a one minute news clip on CBC even had the Grand Forks Gazette paying attention to the pay-out. I congratulate you on that. It is still up and onwards with the petition to the Attorney General of B.C. This week we are starting with a door to door signing campaign. I ask all of your readers to take the time to read the petition in this matter. Donald Pharand, Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette: It seems rather ignorant to blame an employee for the contractual terms of his hiring or termination by the employer. We have a new council that was recently elected to govern by a majority of Grand Forks taxpayers. This is how our existing democracy operates. This elected council then makes informed decisions on our behalf, with the skilled research and assistance of city staff members and a CAO. This is required of all cities in B.C. to run their business. Each elected mayor and council then have an opportunity to appoint or terminate their choice of CAO and negotiate the terms of the contract, this is the mayor and council’s responsibility to their electorate. Appointed by council, the CAO is council’s staff liaison, providing advice and recommendations with regard to policies, as well as ensuring that policies, directives and other decisions of council are carried out. If I don’t like a decision that my council makes it’s okay for me to respectfully let them know that I disagree with their decision ...and/ or I can wait four years and hope to vote in someone who is more aligned to my personal values. What is not okay is to personally attack the individual employee who was legally and

Notice of road maintenance, logging and log hauling operations in the Gilpin Grasslands and Morrissey Creek area. Logging, road-building, and road-maintenance operations in areas on and adjacent to the Gilpin and Dan O’Rea Forest Service Roads will commence on April 20th and carry on for a period of 2 - 3 months. There will be significant industrial traffic and road construction activity in this area, and the road may be closed to all vehicular traffic for lengthy periods as the main roads are upgraded. Interfor requests that members of the public avoid travelling these roads on weekdays during the duration of the project. If travel cannot be avoided, observe the procedures posted on “Haul Road Protocol” signs. Be sure to travel on the right side of the road and yield to oncoming industrial traffic. The haul roads are “radio-assisted”, meaning that two way radios are used to assist in traffic control. If you have a two way radio, monitor the posted radio frequency. Public users are advised to wait for an industrial vehicle and ask for assistance on how best to proceed. Please observe signs indicating “active logging” or “active worksites”, and do not enter these areas. Interfor apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause. To do this, some very experienced and able members of the Ag Society livestock committee helped develop workable solutions to any problems identified.” The MSU was given a license to process red meat to add to its poultry licence on Oct. 3. It went on to do an additional processing day each for beef, turkeys and another two days for chickens. O’Donnell continued: “We have a straightforward list now of next steps and we’re ready for business.” Ag Society President Christy Luke says she would like to commend Wendy McCullough, Susan Green and the board of Community Futures Boundary for their financial and administrative support, as well as consulting services, which have been instrumental in keeping development of this valuable community asset on track. Anyone hoping to book meat processing services this season or needing additional information should call Brandon O’Donnell, operations manager, at 250-443FARM (3276).

Dogs get chance for CGN testing SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

The Canadian Kennel Club has a program to acknowledge those dogs whose owners have taken the extra step to train them to be an upstanding member part of the community. After passing 12 simple tests, they are awarded the title of Canine Good Neighbour (CGN) and issued a certificate. This title can be achieved by any dog, purebred or not, over the age of six months. The tests are not special tricks, but useful commands that every pet dog should know: • Accepting A Friendly Stranger • Politely Accepts Petting • Appearance and Grooming (allowing brushing and examination) • Out For A Walk (walking on a loose leash without pulling) • Walking Through A Crowd • Sit/Down On Command and Stay In Place • Come When Called • Praise/Interaction (being able to calm down after playing) • Reaction To A Passing Dog (no lunging or barking) • Reaction To Distractions (not spooking with loud noises) • Supervised Isolation (leaving your dog with someone for a few minutes) • Walking Through A Door/Gate (without changing ahead) Having a CGN title is also generally one of the requirements of becoming a therapy dog and visiting care homes and hospitals. This summer, a CGN evaluator from the West Kootenay Kennel Club in Castlegar will be coming down to Grand Forks to give the CGN test to local dogs. The test will be conducted in City Park on Saturday, June 12. If you would like additional information on this upcoming test, or learn what you need to do to train your dog for this event, please contact Kathy Novokshonoff at 250-442-2653.

Yes, say moms, we matter CYNTHIA GARNETT

Submitted to the Gazette

“So, you’re just a mom now?” Is a statement that makes many stay-at-home moms cringe. They are more than “just” mother’s, they are raising the next generation. It has been said that raising one child is a full time job, and for a mother, being called “just a mom” devalues her choice to focus on her children. Studies have shown that loving interactions with caring adults strongly stimulate a child’s brain between the ages of 0 to 6 years. This is the time when the brain does 80 per cent of its lifetime growth, and the most instrumental time in the mental, physical and social growth of a child. This early connection and stimulation sets the stage for how children will learn and interact with others throughout their life. A mother’s job is often thankless, starts the minute she wakes up and doesn’t end until she collapses at the end of the day from exhaustion.

(Sitting, left to right) Ashley Odger, Tinaya Jorgensen and Starlyt, Kim Watt and Ben, Ashley Peregoodoff, Katelyn Teskey, Laranna Androsoff and KacheLynn Comber-Bigstone, Biatta Novokshonoff and Elise, Evayah, Sarah Waterlow and Lylea, Cynthia Garnett, Shayna Plotnikoff; (standing) Bethany Thate, Catherine Horkoff and Tatyana, Sarah Fisher and Aiden, Kristy Zamec, Heather Nelson and Aiden, Jessica Hamilton and Annabella, Tess Noren and Jak, Mel Shenstone and Gavin, Christine Carlson, Katlian Lidstone, Kim Stewart and Skyla, Tara Zimmernann and Mykaila; and (foreground) Willson Thate.

There is no guarantee of coffee, meal breaks or even a shower. It is a seven-day work week with no Fridays or weekend. It is an endless cycle of soothing, stimulating, entertaining, feeding, washing, cleaning, coaching and begging with no pay. It is a job where the rules are always changing and uninvited judgments abound from all generations and unknown sources. Yet, they, the “just” moms, know that they are doing the most important job in their family right now. And yes, it might change as they re-evaluate their families’ priorities, but for now they are staying home and being a mom because they know that providing a loving and stimulating environment for their babies and children is what they can do best right now. So on Thursday, May 7, the Baby’s Best Chance and Parents of Young Children programs celebrated the value of all mothers in the “Mothers Matter” campaign initiated by the Family Resource Programs of B.C.

A local resident has been named to a provincial organization that will be influential in guiding children’s development. Laranna Androsoff is one of seven members selected from throughout B.C. to be on the Human Early Learning Partnership’s (HELP) Aboriginal Steering Committee. “It’s a provincial body run through the University of British Columbia (UBC),” said Androsoff. “The Aboriginal Steering Committee helps guide HELP, which is doing some ground-breaking, world-renowned research. They’re really quite progressive in what they’re doing.” LARANNA ANDROSOFF HELP is a collaborative, interdisciplinary research network exploring how different early environments and experiences contribute to inequalities in children’s development. Androsoff was asked to submit an application to the committee after speaking at the global childhood summit. She was very surprised when she received the call to join the committee. “It was such a busy time, I was a couple of days late with my application—I never do that,” she said. “This opportunity just wasn’t meant to be. Come October of last year they said they had an opening and asked if I would consider becoming a member. That was a huge honour and I didn’t expect it.” The Aboriginal Steering Committee includes members from throughout the province including two elder advisors. Androsoff is the only member from the Kootenays on the committee. “It was really exciting to be able to bring a voice from the Boundary to that committee at the provincial level because we’ve never had a voice on the committee before,” said Androsoff. Androsoff has already met with the group in April when she attended her first meeting, which was in Vancouver. “We have two large meetings a year,” she said. “The Human Early Learning Partnership present to the Aboriginal Steering Committee about their projects and get their input to ensure that Aboriginal people are properly represented and that the tools they are using to collect their research are culturally safe.” Androsoff said since she is so new with the group, she is just learning the ropes. She is looking forward to the next meeting in November. Androsoff added that her work on the steering committee will allow her to bring her experiences back to the groups she works with in Grand Forks and the Boundary. Androsoff is a member of the Boundary Métis Community Association and the Boundary All-Nations Aboriginal Council. She is employed as an Aboriginal early years community outreach worker through the Boundary Family and Individual Services Society (BFISS). “I’m Russian on my father’s side and Danish and Métis on my mother’s side,” she said. Androsoff said she was happy to share the results of the Vital Signs project from the Phoenix Foundation with the committee. HELP also leans heavily on data received from the Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI) and Early Development Instrument (EDI), which surveys teachers and students on factors affecting childhood learning and development. “It’s really exciting to be part of these new and upcoming projects that are going to be really valuable in the research that they do,” said Androsoff. “(It’s really important) to see where the vulnerabilities lie in our communities and how we can help families and children to thrive because that is the whole goal of this.”

Entering the Dragon’s Den CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

A pair of local Grand Forks Secondary School (GFSS) students got the chance to appear in front of a group of dragons. No, they didn’t walk onto the set of Dragon’s Den. Sebastian Sullivan and Brandon Drexler traveled to Trail where they appeared on Junior Dragon’s Den on May 1 at the Charles Bailey Theatre. The pair walked away with second place in the senior category for their presentation of BCS Firewood Services. “It was a good time,” said Sullivan. “There were a lot of very good business proposals. The show went fine; it was a great experience. I love talking in front of people. That was pretty cool.” The two heard about the competition from school principal Scott Stewart and thought it would be a good idea. Sullivan said the duo received mentoring from an individual in Trail who helped them with their business plan. The business plan the two presented was about a firewood business that Drexler started and Sullivan joined soon after. “Before it snowed, Brandon started his firewood cutting business because he wanted another way to make money,” said Sullivan. “Five months ago he started chopping wood. He posted on the Grand Forks Buy and Sell Facebook (Above) Sebastian Sullivan and Brandon Drexler and (below) Maxwell Nicholson took home second page and soon had tons of people looking for and first in their respective categories at the Jufirewood. So from that we knew we had a chance nior Dragon’s Den event held in Trail on May 1. at making money cutting firewood for people.” Submitted photos The pair had to answer several questions and ring gear to virtual fridge apps and everything send in a video, which was shown at the show. The Junior Dragon’s Den event was held in in between.” Maxwell Nicholson, who graduated from front of a crowd of over 200 people. Each group had to make their presentation in front of a num- GFSS last year and currently attends the Uniber of judges, which featured local personalities, versity of Victoria, finished first in the college/ university/trades division with his proposal for and the crowd. “We had to give a five-minute business pro- Ideas Café. Nicholson told the Gazette he enjoyed the posal, which was followed by questions from the event and benefited greatly from the dragon’s dragons,” said Sullivan. The show was a pretty accurate replica of the feedback. “I got some good feedback and that was the popular television show, he added. “I wasn’t expecting it to be exactly like the main reason I wanted to go in the competition; show but it was close,” he said. “I don’t think just to be able to practice those business development and pitching skills,” he said. they were all millionaires though.” The pair received $1,000 for finishing second in the competition that Sullivan said will go towards new equipment for the business. “We’re putting it into the business to see if we can make more money this up-and-coming winter time with people wanting firewood and perhaps sell to campsites in the summer time,” he said. Sullivan said working on the plan has helped the business with identifying competition and knowing how to plan better. The Dragon’s Den competition, which is in its second year, is spearheaded by Community Futures and features students from Grade 8 to university throughout the West KootenayBoundary region. “We were very impressed with the level of detail, business plans and presentations by all of the Junior Dragons,” said Don Freschi, general manager of Community Futures Trail. “There were some very talented individuals Red Cedar Award finalist author Nikki Tate was at Grand and teams that presented a number Forks and District Public Library on Saturday talking of business ideas ranging from patent about her children’s books. nity. I think it’s fun for them to see the process.” Bak received much of her art training from her mother. She also studied in Alberta at Alberta College of Art and Design. Bak said it is quite different painting under a strict time limit and in front of a large crowd. “It’s a bit exhilarating,” she said. “You have a lot of people watching you and you don’t want to disappoint them but you want to have fun and do what you do.”

Grand Forks’ first Art Battle was a rousing success as 11 local painters battled it out for supremacy in front of a sold out crowd at gallery 2. Leta Bak of Grand Forks fought off the competition to take top prize at the event and will now compete for the provincial title on June 4. Other painters included David Hecht, Sonja Gartner, Wanda Hecht, Taylor Charlong, Nadine Heiberg, Patricia McNish, Nora Curiston, Ashley Renee, Steven Howard and Darlene Dautel. Each painter had 20 minutes to come up with the best work they could. The top painters from the first two rounds than moved on to the final where they battled it out once again. Voting for each round was decided by the audience, who got to watch the painters’ progression as the audience members circled around. “It was a very successful night,” said organizer Shannon Frederick. “All the artists were great. Everyone I talked to said they had a really good time.” Bak was thrilled to find out she had won. She had competed previously in Art Battle events in Penticton and Kelowna. “It’s so nice to see so many people I know in crowd,” she said. “It’s nice to see them Stephen Howard gets ready to put the finishing touches Craig Lindsay photo out there supporting artists in the commu- on his first round painting.

Piranhas get ready for meet season CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

The Grand Forks Piranhas Swim Club is expecting to make waves as they prepare for the start of the season. The Piranhas feature boys and girls from age 5 up to 17 who practice several times a week. Some of the swimmers practiced over the winter, but now all are participating in spring training in anticipation of the summer meets, which start in June. Coaching the Piranhas is former coach and club swimmer Matt Grey. Grey, who is a teacher at Grand Forks Secondary School, is excited to be back at the helm after taking a sabbatical for schooling. “I grew up on the swim team,” he said. “I was the head coach for five years ending in 2008. I took a break when I was finishing some school and now I’m back.” Grey coached winter maintenance the last two years and will be coaching during the summer meets. He said it’s a real balancing act between coaching the swim club and teaching at the school. “It’s definitely a balancing act until school is out. It’s a lot of extra hours but it’s a lot of fun. It’s very rewarding. I get a lot of energy from the kids.” Grey said that youngsters join the swim team for several different reasons.

“Some kids are here to make friends, some are here to learn to swim, some are here to hone their skills and be the best swimmer they can be,” he said. “We have some swimmers that compete at the provincial level, which is just awesome.” Grey said the Piranhas really encourage the four Fs: family, fun, fitness and friendship. “I’m obviously biased because I grew up swimming, but I think swimming is the best sport for fitness,” he said. “You’re building up your cardio and your strength at the same time and it’s close to no-impact because of the buoyancy of the water.” Assisting Grey are former Piranhas Nicole Nuyten and David Hecht. “It’s great to see kids grow up on the team and then take on leadership roles,” said Grey. Junior swimmers Jailyn Needoba and Cassiane Larson have grown up with the Piranhas. Both began swimming with the club when they were just four years old and are now both into their eighth year and are as excited as ever for the start of the season. “Swimming is fun and you get to meet new people,” said Larson. “You get to race people and it’s fun when we go to events,” added Needoba. The pair agreed that going to meets is

fun and that it isn’t all about winning. “It doesn’t matter if you win or not, it’s all about sportsmanship,” said Needoba. “And fun,” added Larson, who also said she enjoyed the adrenaline rush the swimmers get when they race. Both girls like that swimming is a team sport where each swimmer’s results adds points to the team total but you also have individual ribbons and medals.

GFI gets the Blues CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

The Grand Forks International Baseball Tournament has gone local with their 12th and final team. The last roster spot will be filled by the Grand Forks Blues. The Blues will feature mainly local players but are expected to add a few “ringers” from other communities to make them even more competitive. GFI coordinator Brian McAndrew said it will be great to have a local team for fans to cheer for. He also sees a natural rivalry between the Blues and the Trail Orioles. “Since it is our tournament, having a local team represent us is very important,” he said. “It gives us great community spirit which is important. That’s the thing about this tournament—it shows just how much community spirit we have here.” This is McAndrew’s first year as coordinator after several years on the board including two as vice-president. This year’s roster of teams features a strong assortment of teams from throughout B.C. and Washington State including the defending champion Burnaby Bull-

dogs and the perennial powerhouse Seattle Studs. Although the tournament lacks the international draw of a China or Russia like in previous years, McAndrew says it’s still high caliber baseball sure to thrill fans. “As far as the teams go, we’ve got toplevel teams as we’ve always had,” said McAndrew. “Their attitude about the GFI is that it is their favourite. It’s the best tournament that they attend and they all look forward to coming here each year and playing.” McAndrew said the GFI is more than just a baseball tournament—it’s an event. He said that the cancellation of the 2013 GFI is no cause for concern. It is a challenge organizing such a large-scale event, he admits. “The 2014 tournament had some of the best baseball yet with a final game that took everyone’s breath away after cheering the Burnaby Bulldogs to a heartpounding finish,” he said. This year will be the 34th tournament in 40 years (1975 to 2015). The GFI runs from June 30 to July 5 and will encompass both Canada Day and the American

Fourth of July. Amanda Thate will be on hand to sing the national anthems of both Canada and the United States. There is also a fly-over planned for the opening ceremonies. Putting on the tournament requires the coordination of a small army of volunteers. McAndrew said the committee is in good shape but good always use more helpers. “We need about 300 volunteers each year to do it,” said McAndrew. “In a town

Train for a job as a lifeguard

Last week’s puzzle solved

Joke of the Week: Paddy was in New York ... He was patiently waiting and watching the traffic cop on a busy street crossing. The cop stopped the flow of traffic and shouted, ‘Okay, pedestrians.’ Then he’d allow the traffic to pass. He’d done this several times, and Paddy still stood on the sidewalk. After the cop had shouted, ‘Pedestrians!’ for the tenth time, Paddy went over to him and said, ‘Is it not about time ye let the Catholics across?’

In Memoriam

Alice Glanville was a dedicated pioneer and educator HARVEY GLANVILLE

For the Grand Forks Gazette

With the recent passing of Alice Glanville (April 28, 2015), the Boundary Country has lost a dedicated pioneer, lifetime educator and treasury of historical wealth. Alice (nee Clark) was born in Midway 95 years ago, and spent her childhood in Greenwood, along with her seven siblings. Despite limited family resources, Alice was able to achieve her dream of becoming a teacher after attending Normal School in Vancouver. At the tender age of 19, her teaching career commenced in 1939 at the one-room Brown Creek School on the North Fork, the beginning of her influence as a lifetime educator in the Grand Forks area. A desperate need for filling wartime jobs on the home front lured Alice away from her teaching assignment and she ended up in Montreal in 1941, spending the next two years working in a gun factory. With a youthful spirit for adventure, she took an opportunity during this time to tour the Maritimes on bicycle with a group of friends. After her marriage in 1943 to James Glanville, Alice was committed to raising her family, which included three sons; Harvey, Ross and Clark. Life on the family dairy farm on the North Fork provided many interesting experiences, and, like many people of her generation, Alice learned to be self reliant. In 1955 Alice resumed teaching and spent the next 25 years as teacher/librarian at Grand Forks Secondary School. During this period she returned to the University of British Columbia for seven years of summer school, receiving a Bachelor of Education degree in 1967. Balancing family, work, studies, and farm life required a special commitment and sacrifices were

often made. Alice retired from teaching in 1980 and turned her focus to community service. This included 19 years as a trustee with the local school district (10 years as board chairperson) serving in numerous capacities both at the local and provincial levels. She gained a reputation for being thorough in preparation, assertive in debate, knowledgeable about issues, and well versed at trouble shooting. Alice also assumed the role of marriage commissioner for 20 years, conducting wedding ceremonies in locations such as mountain tops, house boats, and ski hills. Perhaps the most influential of Alice’s pursuits was her dedication to sharing and preserving the history of the Boundary Country. She and her husband, Jim, were instrumental in preparing much of the historical content that has been featured in the first 15 editions of the Boundary Historical Reports. Alice’s historical journalism expanded with the publication of her first book, Schools of the Boundary, in 1991, chronicling a detailed history of 100 years of education in B.C.’s Boundary district. In conjunction with Grand Forks centennial celebrations, Alice and Jim also co-authored two historical books. In the Shadow of Observation, written in 1987, takes the reader through a nostalgic journey of the community’s past, and Grand Forks ... Where the Kettle River Flows, published in 1997, is a revelation of the life and times of the people and events that have carved their niche in the Sunshine Valley. Alice’s community presence was also felt as a representative on the Boundary Health Council, a committed advocate and volunteer with the local public library, and a primary resource person for the Grand Forks Museum.

She received numerous tributes from different administrative levels, which included being granted Freedom of the City of Grand Forks in 1998, being inducted into the B.C. Historical Society as an honourary life member, and being awarded the Governor General’s Commemorative Medal for community service. An interest in travel and learning more about the history, culture and politics of other parts of the world, took Alice on many memorable group excursions. This included extensive visits to the former Soviet Union, the People’s Republic of China and numerous countries in South America. Alice and Jim travelled together throughout Canada, reaching its extremities in Newfoundland, Bella Coola on the west coast and Inuvik in the Arctic. They also enjoyed touring extensively throughout British Columbia, most notably visiting more remote locations on back country roads. Alice had a very reliable memory for individuals and events that crossed her path and she maintained contact with an extensive network of people whom she encountered during her lifetime. In 2011 she moved to Salmon Arm in order to be near family, but the Boundary was her domain,

ALICE GLANVILLE

it was a place of deep pride, and Alice did her part to keep its heritage alive. She has woven part of the fabric of this community, and will be missed by her family and friends. A memorial celebration of Alice Glanville’s life is scheduled for 1 p.m. on May 30 at the Gospel Chapel.

Tanka Wasilenkoff

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Tanka Wasilenkoff in Victoria B.C. at the age of 92. She was a life long member of the USCC. Funeral services were held at the Shoreacres Hall on May 13, 2015. In Lieu of flowers her wish was for donations to go to the USCC.

nicate and promote the league. On Saturday, all parish councils’ presidents gave their reports. The biggest challenge facing the councils is convincing members to be chairpersons, and having interest in what is going on in our world and getting involved. Jackie Drysdale gave a presentation on the Catholic Church in local history. The film was presented on the Rossland Church, from the first church built in 1895 to the present church. Closing mass was celebrated by Most Reverent Bishop John Corriveau, and was followed by a banquet. The guest speaker was Fr. Jim Ratcliff.

Arild Stoltenberg Engen It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Arild Stoltenberg Engen on April 28, 2015 at Grand Forks Boundary Hospital. Arild was born to Ulrik and Anna Engen in Skien, Norway on June 15, 1943. When Arild was just a young boy the family moved to Canada and settled in the lower mainland. He was a car guy and a wheeler dealer. He also loved to entertain family and friends and could often be found in the kitchen cooking up a storm! When not at home you could find Arild enjoying a game of pool with a friend, having some good laughs at the Legion Meat Draw, or anywhere there was Karaoke. He was known to some as Mr. Elvis and loved to get up to perform his favourite songs.
