Outdoor Clothing & Footwear FOR ALL YOUR OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
Sun-kissed beaches and funfilled festivals make the North Okanagan the place to be this summer. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing retreat or you’re geared up for some adrenaline-pumping action, the Okanagan Valley is your best bet. Hike the hills of Turtle Mountain, bike the trails at Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park or enjoy an outdoor adventure at Silver Star. Take a dip, cast a line, soak up the sun or cruise the waters of one of the many lakes: like Okanagan (which stretches valley wide from Vernon all the way to Penticton) or Kalamalka (known for its stunning colour range of cyan to indigo). The region is also home to world-class golf courses and resorts, where you might even catch a famous face. Or give yourself the star treatment at a local spa, check out the array of shops downtown and beyond and dine like a king (or queen) at one of the many spectacular restaurants. Sip some Okanagan flavours at a local winery, or meadery, and pick up some home-grown tastes from a farmers market. The unique beauty and amazing recreational opportunities of the North Okanagan make it the place to be in 2015.

ound up the family for some oldfashioned fun at the Historic O’Keefe Ranch. Founded in 1867, the working ranch tells the story of early B.C. ranching endeavours. Visitors can take a walk through the old O’Keefe Victorian-style Mansion, view the original pump organ of St. Anne’s Church, shop in the general store, or visit the Blacksmith. People even still get married in the beautiful little chapel built so long ago. Guides dressed in traditional garb can tour you through the buildings that hold so much history. There is also an on-site museum to honour the heritage of the days of old and a new interactive kids centre. Guests can feel free to wander the pet friendly ranch and take in the collection of vintage farm machinery, pan for gold, see the huge model railway display, catch a glimpse of some of the critters or grab a bite at the famous Cattlemen’s Club Restaurant. The ranch also has RV parking and camping sites. Opening day is May 9 for Mother’s Day, followed by numerous events, including Murder Mystery and

Golfers travel from all over the world for the opportunity to swing their clubs on the fairways of Predator Ridge. This beautiful golf resort features 36 magnificent holes that wind over rolling hills and rugged pine covered ridges. Predator features an 18-hole course called The Ridge and the resort also has a huge practice facility. With a luxury lodge and cottage accommodation, restaurants, a spa, hiking trails, pools, tennis courts, and a fitness centre, it is truly first-class and has world-wide recognition. Predator is also neighbours with the prestigious Sparkling Hill, up the hill. For more information visit www.predatorridge. com or call 250-542-3436. The Rise Golf Club, a premier course under new ownership, is a Fred Couples signature course. It offers breathtaking views of Okanagan Lake on its 18 hole, par 72, course. The Rise allows players generous fairways and five sets of tees to make sure every guest is happy. For more information check www.therisegolf.ca or call 1-877243-7417. Another championship course lies just north of Vernon at the Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club. book tee-times and for more information. For more than 100 years Vernon Golf and Country Club has long been a favourite spot for people from near and far to hit the links. Nestled in between downtown Vernon and Kalamalka Lake, this semi-private course lets golfers enjoy a peaceful round surrounded by lombard poplars and weeping willows. There are 6,600 yards of fairway on this 18-hole, par 72, course. Book on-line tee times at www.vernongolf.com or call 5420151. Hillview Golf Club is a popular, fast-playing, 18-hole executive course that is short, but demanding. Sitting at par 57, only 3 holes are a par 4, but they are no easy task. With eight lakes connected by creeks and several sandtraps there are some obstacles over this 3,375 yard course. Call 250-549-GOLF (4653). There is just so much opportunity to get great golfing in the Okanagan, so some other worthy mentions are Mabel Lake Golf and Country Club near Enderby (250-838-0881), Royal York in Armstrong (250-546-9700), Coldstream Golf Course in Lumby (250-547-6048), River Ridge in Cherryville (250-547-9660) or Sonseeker’s Ridge (250-833-0258) between Enderby and Salmon Arm, Birchdale Par 3 in Grindrod (250838-7740) and Aspen Golf Club in Lake Country (778-480-0062). NEED FOR
The MotoPlex Speedway and Event Park is in action this year with several high-impact races. May 24 marks the first Travel Trailer Day of Destruction, where mayhem meets speed with hit-topass and trailer racing. The destruction continues Aug. 9 for Summertime Mahem. Then the Sportsman Series Finale takes to the track Sept. 12. For more information visit motoplexspeedway.com and check back for announcements. For adrenaline-pumping action minus the speed, try your luck at the local casino or bingo hall. Put your poker face on or try your hand at blackjack at Lake City Casino or play one of the 400 slots. The thrills are available seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Call 250-545-3505 or visit vernon.lakecitycasinos. com for more information. You can also dabble in some gambling fun at Fairweather Bingo, which offers electronic and paper bingo. The hall is open seven days a week: Monday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday 3 p.m. to 10 and the rest of the week you can dab away from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with twilight play Fridays and Saturdays until 11:30 p.m. For more info or directions call 250-558-6919.

The beach isn’t the only way to the beat the summer heat in the North Okanagan. Vernon is home to the region’s only waterslides, just five minutes north of town. The ultimate fun-stop is above Swan Lake, where you can ride the slides at Atlantis Waterslides. The family-fun centre features nine slides for varying ages and abilities plus the popular river riot. There’s also a hot tub, mini golf, arcade, ice cream parlour, concession and new this year is a Kids Zone high tech playground. The waterslides are open June 6 (but are closed June 8 - 11) to Sept. 7. Dads get in free June 21 for Fathers Day, then come for a full night of sliding during Midnite Madness July 24 and some extended play will be offered Sept. 6 for Customer Appreciation Day with prizes, slide competition with age category, food specials and loads of fun.
For rates and directions visit www.atlantiswaterslides.ca or call 250-549-4121. For the littler ones looking to cool off, head to Polson Park, which is a beautiful place to visit on its own, and check out the free spray park. It’s open for weekends in June and everyday during July and August from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. There’s also a wading pool for the little swimmers at Lakeview Park (AKA the Peanut Pool) at the corner of 18th St. and 30th Ave. for more free fun. The pool is open daily June 27 to Aug. 31 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Or take a drive out to Lavington, part of Coldstream, and cool off in the pool on Lavington Way at the park. It’s also open June 27 to Aug. 31. It’s open from noon to
7 p.m. everyday but is closed for an hour for swimming lessons at 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. If the weather isn’t co-operating, or you just want to get out of the sun, take a splash at the Vernon Aquatic Centre (3310 37th Ave. just off Highway 97 behind Boston Pizza). Equipped with a 25 metre lap pool, leisure pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room it is a great place for the whole family. Children and adults alike can have fun on the rock climbing wall, rope swing and giant water slide. No sunscreen or umbrellas required. The pool does shut down for maintenance Aug. 24 to Sept. 20. For more information or pool schedules visit www.greatervernonrecreation.ca or call 250-550-POOL (7665). Armstrong is also home to an outdoor heated pool, which is open from late May to Sept. 1.
