Chilliwack RCMP escort residents of a notorious drug house on Rotary Street to awaiting police vehicles during a raid on Wednesday. Police say 10 people were taken into custody and four are facing charges after drugs, weapons and other paraphernalia were found. ERIC WELSH/ PROGRESS

Nightmare over for Rotary Street residents? Eric Welsh The Progress Years of frustration and fear may finally be at an end for Rotary Street residents after RCMP raided a problem property Wednesday afternoon. Around 1:30 p.m. officers stormed into the house at 9562 Rotary Street, located just a stone’s throw from Chilliwack secondary school. Over the next two hours they escorted several people outside. A handful were loaded into squad cars and taken into custody. Others were allowed to leave, but not without giving the middle finger to police and

assembled media first. Ten were arrested with six of them released at the scene. The remaining four were set free Thursday morning, with charges pending. Officers remained in the house well into Wednesday evening, collecting evidence, while neighbors peeked out their windows and huddled on front lawns. RCMP said they collected a small quantity of drugs believed to be methamphetamine and MDMA (commonly known as ecstasy or molly) as well as needles, pipes packaging, weigh scales, weapons, and other property were seized.

Aevitas Inc. has pulled the plug on plans to build a hazardous waste recycling plant by the Fraser River. Aevitas president Byron Day said in a letter sent Wednesday it was “with great disappointment,” that he had to make the decision about the Chilliwack project. “I regret to inform all interested parties that Aevitas Inc. is no longer pursuing the development and building of a state of the art special waste management facility in Chilliwack,” said Day in the statement. The “multiple hurdles” thrown in the way of the project amounted to “a neverending uphill battle,” he said. Mayor Sharon Gaetz held a press conference at City Hall on Thursday morning to “respectfully inform” the community of Chilliwack, and was critical of the way Aevitas communicated, with city officials, and the community. “The company did not call to provide us with any additional information and simply cited ‘multiple hurdles’ as their reason for discontinuing the project,” Gaetz said. “We wanted to ensure that the public was aware of the proponent’s decision. The mayor underlined that despite a “restrictive covenant and multiple levels of protection,” in place, there were still many who could not be convinced the facility would be safe. “It was unfortunate that Aevitas did not take the time in the beginning to speak to those concerns. We have been disappointed in the proponent’s lack of engagement with not only the City, but also, and more importantly, with our citizens.” “Despite all that, we still believe such a recycling facility is needed in the Lower Mainland,” she added. “I hope Aevitas has learned a valuable lesson about communication.” The “comprehensive” engagement or consultation efforts with the community

Four dogs removed from Trethewey home Jessica Peters The Progress The dogs are gone but the lingering stench in Tony Rapaz’s garage on Trethewey Avenue is enough to make you keel over. The smell of dog urine and feces permeates the air inside and out of the building, as Rapaz moves in and out, sorting through the mess. Four pitbulls had been living in the open garage, behind a half wall, following the eviction of his tenants there over the weekend. He gave the tenants until May 4 to remove the dogs, and when they weren’t able to do that, Rapaz barked up every tree he could imagine to have them removed. On Wednesday night, the SPCA arrived to do just that. The SPCA said Thursday morning that two of the dogs would be reunited with their owner Thursday. However, the other two dogs are in the care of FVRD’s animal control. Mayor Sharon Gaetz said the dog owner is also working the FVRD to find a workable solution for the two seized dogs.

The dog owner was also on site to help with the removal of the dogs from the property, said Lorie Chortyk, general manager of community relations for the SPCA. She explained how the dogs came to be removed from the property. “What happened is originally Animal Control was called,” she said. “The SCPA couldn’t really do anything at the beginning as there weren’t any cruelty concerns.” That is until Wednesday, when the dogs weren’t able to be fed due to lack of access to the property. The SPCA responded with the FVRD. The SPCA took two of the pitbulls into custody, and two were deemed to be dangerous by the FVRD, as well as unlicensed. Gaetz, who is also chair of the FVRD, said the onus to ensure these situations don’t happen lays on the landlord’s lap. “Our mothers’ adage of an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is applicable here,” she said. “The landlord has a responsibility to ensure his tenants do not cause problems to the neighbourhood.” That’s possible through more

from bad rental situations by visiting the Chilliwack Community Policing office, Gaetz added. “It doesn’t really matter what

SAR leads library talk on outdoor safety Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Many in Chilliwack enjoy exploring the vast back country with its array of picturesque rivers, lakes and recreational trails. But some folks head out to challenge the local terrain without really being prepared. Join Ryan Voisey, a member of Chilliwack Search and Rescue, at the Chilliwack Library on Tuesday, May 26, to pick up some valuable safety and survival tips. “I’m hoping it will be entertaining,” said Voisey, an experienced hunter and outdoors enthusiast, who has been a volunteer member of Chilliwack SAR for three years. His talk, ‘Outdoor Safety with Chilliwack Search and Rescue’ will be an “old fashioned” discussion and display of some gear and equipment, he said. “I’ll be bringing my pack and will lay it out to show the crowd.” It will range from items to be included in a typical hiking kit, to those he might pack to take with him on a rescue mission. “I have to say people don’t plan to end up getting hurt,” Voisey said. “They often say they just didn’t know. They don’t have the experience to recognize the potential danger that’s out there.” Chilliwack SAR gets about 75 callouts for service each year. kind of accommodations you offer, he doesn’t have to live there,” she added, and neighbouring residents “deserve to live in peace.” “If he did a criminal record check he would have known if these people had a problem in the past,” she said. But even the best efforts are sometimes not enough, she said, and in those cases the FVRD and the City of Chilliwack are available to help. “We’re here to assist if people fall through the cracks,” he said. Rapaz has said the dogs did not belong to the ex-tenants, but possibly one of their relatives. Officials had originally told Rapaz that the house was still occupied, and so the dogs could not be removed. As he removed garbage from the garage on Thursday morning, Rapaz also found items that prompted him to call the RCMP again. Among the items left behind were a panel lift marked as a rental from a local business, boxes of animal furs, and several large appliances. jpeters@theprogress.com

When Terry Daly was lying in a hospital bed at Chilliwack General, she saw a sign. Well, it was more of a plaque, attached to a fetal heart rate monitor. It read: Run For Mom. The plaque was a reminder of the good work that’s been accomplished through the fundraising efforts of the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation’s annual running event. For 16 years, all the funds raised have been used to purchase items for the maternity ward at CGH, exclusively. And for many of those years, Daly had been a runner in those events. She had missed the last few runs, but while lying there benefitting from the very machines she may have helped to purchase, she was motivated to run again. “Just being in the position of needing that heart rate monitor, and seeing the little plaque on there, it just made me feel so good,” she said. So, this weekend she’ll place her seven-month-old son Fraser into his stroller and hit the trail once again. “I think I’ll probably run/walk,” she clarifies, in the easier 5K portion of the event. And she won’t be alone. When Daly first completed the Run for Mom, she was joining

IS STRESS AND HORMONE IMBALANCE KEEPING YOU FROM

TO THE FULLEST?

HORMONE HEALTH A woman’s Guide to Safe, Natural, hormone Health by Nazlin Khamis The human body is brilliant and built to stay in harmony. All body systems help keep it on an even keel. Hormones play a major role in our health outcomes. Their ebb and flow influences all aspects of our physical, emotional and mental wellness. Hormones do their best when their levels are what we call “balanced”, the amount of hormone is not too low, not too high, but “just right”. When this “balance” is disturbed there can be problems with sleep, anxiety, weight gain, depression, mood swings, libido and well-being in general. This imbalance can happen any time, especially in women, from as early as puberty, through perimenopause, into menopause and beyond. When we think of hormones we mainly think of Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone and DHEA. But there is also the stress hormone Cortisol, produced by the adrenals, Thyroid hormone, produced by the Thyroid gland and Insulin which regulates blood sugars. When one or more of these hormones are out of balance, symptoms such as mood swings, irritability, depression, water

retention, headaches, hair loss, increased facial hair, thinning or drying of skin, heavy menstrual bleeding, hot flashes/night sweats, weight gain, fatigue/exhaustion, low body temperatures, aching joints and inflammation become aggravating. Many of these symptoms can often be alleviated when we achieve “optimal hormone balance”. Bio-Identical hormone therapy, is often the best way to replace these hormones, which are identical to the ones produced by our bodies, not the synthetic or chemically modified ones, that can have plenty of side effects. The most accurate method of testing actual available hormone in the body is Saliva testing. Men can be equally affected by fluctuating hormone levels, especially Testosterone, which can cause loss of libido, thinning hair, increased belly fat and loss of muscle mass. Diet and lifestyle play a very important role and there are many natural supplements that can support our hormones health. Reducing stress and improving thyroid function, and are all relevant and important in achieving hormone balance.

Aevitis critics celebrate pull out AEVITIS from Front should have happened “before” the hearing took place in December 2013, she said. The fact remains that a facility like this was needed and “we hope that a similar waste recycling facility will find a home here in B.C. to help all of us safely recycle a variety of materials,” added Gaetz. Many of those reacting to the decision heartily agreed the facility was still needed in B.C. to recycle mercury-filled light bulbs and transformer oil. Opponents stood before Chilliwack city council to oppose the rezoning of the site in December 2013, they formed a coalition, and signed a petition that yielded thousands of signatures against the riverside location. It has always been the proximity to the river, that was the sticking point for the Aevitas plan, said Ernie Crey, fisheries advisor to Sto:lo Tribal Council and band council member for Cheam First Nation. Crey attended the original rezoning hearing, and spoke against the project. “I am happy to hear this news,” said Crey. “I would have expected that they’d have given up sooner, but I think the Mr. Day has made the right decision under the circumstances.” The opposition that arose against the project was never a criticism of the Aevitas owner or the recycling processes that they are known for, but rather the location, Crey underlined. A coalition of First Nations, environmental groups, river stewards, citizens and sport fishing advocates formed to fight the location of the

plant in the Cattermole Business Park, which was less than 200 metres from the Fraser River. Most recently local Sto:lo leaders met with provincial government reps to share their opposition to the plan. The waste recycling experts at Aevitas said in their announcement letter that they shared “the concern of opposition groups to protect the Fraser River,” but added: “It is unfortunate that efforts and funding could not be collaborated to develop world class facilities and processes as opposed to stopping them.” They were promising 10 levels of disaster and flood protection, but critics were never convinced. “Our intent was to build a recycling facility that could handle and manage drummed hazardous waste, transformer oil and fluorescent lamps from B.C.,” Day wrote in his statement. “In this day and age, we do have the means to manage these wastes in as safe and environmentally friendly manner,” Day wrote. “These wastes are present in everyone’s daily lives and without facilities such as the one were proposing, improper disposal disburses them into in the air, land and water.” Lina Azeez of Watershed Watch was one of the members of the coalition, who showed up to city hall to hear what the mayor had to say. In the end, members of the public were not allowed inside the press conference, but she was ready to offer a comment afterwards. “We’re so excited. This is a huge win for salmon and a huge win for the people of Chilliwack, as well as

those downstream of here. This showed how a group of committed people can make things work. “So we’re really happy that it’s not happening at that location any more. But it’s a bit unfortunate that they did not work with the community to find an appropriate alternative location.” Resident Wayne Froese said it was good to see “some sanity prevail” and said it’s also a positive message in that the coalition was successful in stopping the project in that location.

Forever!

“My $69 professional group hypnosis: a jump-start and a long-term solution.”

Sto:lo Grand Chief Clarence Pennier said the resulting decision sends “a message” to municipalities and regional districts. “It makes me happy that they’re not going to proceed in that location, but sort of sad that they’re not going to pursue the project all together,” he said, adding that cleaning up the environment through recycling was still needed. “It’s also a message to municipalities and regional districts that they should become better neighbours to us.”

2015 ACCORD

Run supports Chilliwack hospital up with her husband’s family. Once Daly started running, her own family joined her, too. This year, there will be nine of them (Fraser included) taking part. Historically, the Run for Mom has always taken place on Mother’s Day. But this year, organizers decided to try something new. They pushed the run to the Saturday of the same weekend, to give all moms — the volunteers, organizers and runners themselves — the day off. Like many other runners and walkers, Daly is working to raise funds. Even though the event is this weekend, it’s not too late to take part. The Run For Mom has a goal of reaching a $20,000 benchmark, which will help them

with this year’s purchase of an infant resuscitator. Registration is available online at run4mom.kintera.org, and

there will be a registration table at the event. There are three separate run routes, for all levels of ability, including a fun 1K run, a 5K

route and a 10K. The run starts at 10 a.m. from the parade square in Lot 7 of the UFV Canada Education Park.

A stinging rebuke

The Chilliwack

Progress

R AESIDE

Many parents were probably hopeful that last week’s B.C. Court of Appeal decision was the last they’d hear about the provincial government’s seemingly never-ending battle with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation over the removal of class size and special-needs support formulas from classrooms. Wishful thinking. In a judgment, four of five appeal court judges found that the province did not infringe on the constitutional rights of teachers to bargain working conditions. It was a stinging rebuke to the teachers’ union, finding that the government has the authority to set class sizes and special needs support in public schools, and that it didn’t bargain in bad faith. Regardless, the BCTF said it will try to take the case to the Supreme Court of Canada, and the historical shoving match between Victoria and the BCTF will see yet another chapter. While no one would argue that class sizes should be left to expand without limits, and while support for special-needs children is vital to give those kids the tools they need to become healthy adults, both issues should not be decided by unions, contract negotiators, and subsequently, lawyers and courts. These issues are at the core of education policy and the type of learning environments provided for our children – in context of what is reasonable, affordable and sustainable over the long-term. To take this out of the hands of the public’s elected representatives – whatever their political stripes – and expect the courts to be the champions of kids through an interpretation of law, isn’t good for anyone. The public has the ability to express and test its education values as a priority at the ballot box. It’s how democracy should work. – Black Press

L OCALLY G LOBAL

Gratitude still strong 70 years after peace in Europe September 3, 1939. “I remember that day,” said my mom, Irene Harris. “It was Tuesday. I was babysitting our two-year-old nephew and we had to go up to Kentish Town in London to pick up his tricycle. But my brother John warned me to get out of London straight away. War with Germany had been declared.” Almost six years and over 60 million lost lives later, mom, who served in the Women’s Royal Air Force, remembered another day. May 7, 1945. Victory in Europe. “The Germans had surrendered. The war was over. Ever yone was in the streets dancing, singing, partying. The church bells tolled. There was so much excitement, camaraderie, jubilation!” A few days earlier on April 30, Hitler had committed suicide during the final days of defeat by

the Soviets in the Battle of Berlin. On May 5, German forces in northwest Europe surrendered. But while the war was over in Europe it would rage on for a few more months in the Pacific. In the U.K., over a million people poured into the streets and Canadians Margaret and Americans EVANS joined the Brits and the French in London and Paris, dancing in the streets. Untold thousands filled the streets in every city in Canada, work forgotten as hugs, high five’s and tears of happiness united strangers. Lancaster planes droned overhead, releasing bags of scrap paper that merged with reams of ticker tape that had been thrown from office

windows. The Toronto Stock Exchange called it quits after 35 minutes of trading. The balancing act of negotiating the surrender that lit up the world lasted just hours. Hitler’s successor, President Karl Doenitz, instructed German General Alfred Jodl to agree to surrender his western front forces to the Allies but refused to surrender to the Soviets in the east. The Allies put pressure on Jodl by threatening not to accept their surrender and to leave the Germans to the mercy of the Soviets. Jodl, out of military wiggle room, surrendered unconditionally. It all came down to just 20 minutes around a long wooden table in a red brick school house in Reims, France. The building had become the map-lined war room and headquarters of the Allied Expeditionary Force. At

02:41 Jodl signed the documents that laid out the terms of the surrender of Germany’s land, sea and air forces. Eisenhower’s Chief of Staff General Walter Bedell Smith signed on behalf of the Western Allies, General Ivan Susloparov signed on behalf of the Soviets, and French MajorGeneral Francois Sevez signed as the official witness. But when it was noted that the signed document contained text that was different to an earlier agreed-upon draft, the Soviets insisted on a second signing, this time in the heart of German aggression, Berlin. The second Military Act of Surrender was signed shortly before midnight on May 8. By now, worldwide celebration was well underway. Over 1.1 million Canadians had ser ved, over 45,000 died and there were more than 54,000 who were

wounded. Canada had been the first Commonwealth country to send troops to Britain in 1939. Throughout the war, more than 40 per cent of Canada’s male population between ages 18 and 45 enlisted and Canada’s industrial production of war materials was valued at $10 billion (over $100 billion in today’s values). “The blackout curtains came down and, for the first time in years, the lights went on,” recalled my mom. “I remember the lights. Hampstead Heath (near London) was ablaze in red and white lights. It was so amazing…” While the lights lit homes and streets they bathed the world in an illumination of peace and renewed hope. Seventy years on and our gratitude to our veterans remains endless.

Why not have your say?

Coast Guard is 911 for ships ment and attrition. Total savings of this co-operative effort are $14.5 million per year. Industr y Minister James Moore is quoted as saying that “1970s era ship tracking equipment is being replaced.” That is incorrect; that equipment was replaced five years ago. The equipment that is being replaced is the communications control system. This is what controls the radio equipment used to communicate with vessels. This “technological innovation” is a touch screen communications control system that replaces the knobs and switches and touch screens currently in use. A new touch screen to replace the old touch screens is hardly a “technological innovation.” Mr. Moore is also quoted as saying “these fears were also raised back in the ’60s and ’70s, when lighthouses were destaffed.” The last round of lighthouse de-staffing took place in the late ‘90s and was halted after only a few lighthouses had been destaffed. The majority of lighthouses on the B.C. coast are still fully staffed. The recent 30-minute outage in Prince Rupert should be a

wake-up call. For people on the water it was the equivalent of ATC and 911 being out of service from the northern tip of Vancouver Island to the Alaska border. If you were in trouble for those 30 minutes and called for help, your only hope of being heard would have been if you were lucky enough to have another vessel close enough to hear you. When you get in trouble on the water, seconds count. If your house is on fire you can go outside, If your boat is on fire you are in the water. This is not hysteria, this is a fact. There are many examples of mariners who only managed to make one radio call for help before “going down.” The MCTS Centre in Ucluelet has been closed and the operations have been remoted to Prince Rupert. If the same outage were to occur again, and there is no reason to believe that it won’t, it would cover the entire B.C. outer coast from Washington to Alaska. If you make your living off the water or just like to get out in your boat for fun and this doesn’t worry you, it should. Scott Hodge Unifor Local 2182 (Marine Communications Officers)

Green party has vision for Canada In regards to Seonaigh Macpherson’s letter regarding child care for vulnerable families. (Investing in children an investment in the future, Chilliwack Progress, May 1.) It bemuses me how the NDP and their Chilliwack-Hope candidate believes that offering subsidized childcare to unemployed parents is going to reduce the hazard of vulnerable children. Especially, when the very reason that these children are vulnerable is because their families lack a liveable income and support systems that historically have proven

to lead to stabile and healthy functioning lives. A $15 guaranteed childcare service is only going to benefit middle to upper class families, and do nothing for families in stress who cannot afford $15 a day. These low income families are dependant on their families or networking with other families for childcare services. So this family subsidy will cost the Canadian Taxpayer over a billion dollars a year and only benefit families that are currently affording it now. Though their intentions are honourable, like other ill-conceived

NDP policies, they’re not really well thought out. It’s similar to their strategy of raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour. Though it seems to be an honourable policy, a drastic increase like this is extremely inflationary, and will disrupt the economy drastically. For example, what about all the skilled people who are making $18 an hour now. Do we raise their wages to $23, or risk them quitting their jobs to make slightly less, but take a position that has less stress, or maybe closer to home.

I would suggest that the NDP follow the lead of the Green Party of Canada, and offer these families education, training, the right to a healthy environment, and employment based on sustainable economic policy, rather than taxpayer subsidy. For a complete overview of all Green Party policies, please Google greenparty.ca and click on Vision Green. The Green Party is the only party in Canada to list all their policies, whether there’s an election looming or not.

Re: “Coast Guard hysteria sinks lower” (B.C. Views, April 29). The “ship monitoring stations” that Tom Fletcher refers to are more than just that. Coast Guard Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) Centres perform two distinct but complimentary functions. They provide vessel traffic services, much like air traffic control for ships, and provide communications and coordination to detect distress situations similar to a 911 centre for mariners. They also broadcast maritime safety information, screen vessels entering Canadian waters, and provide marine information to other federal government departments and agencies. The MCTS Centres are the result of the merger of Vessel Traffic Services and Coast Guard Radio that occurred in 1995. This initiative was proposed by the union, which recognized that technological change provided the opportunity to rationalize services and save money. The result was that the combined service went from 44 centres to 22 and the number of staff was reduced by one third. The reduction in staff was achieved through early retire-

She was near her wit’s end, thinking the RCMP and the city were powerless to do anything about it, when the police finally rolled in. “To see all the undercover officers and uniformed police over there, I can’t even tell you how fabulous I feel,” she said with a big grin. “I’ve been upset and frustrated and off my nut. The Wild Salmon Caravan will be stopping in Chilliwack next week as it follows the migrator y route of salmon smolts from the headwaters down to the ocean. Made up of First Nations, activists and wild salmon advocates, the caravan making its way across B.C. is both a spiritual and political effort, says one of the organizers, Eddie Gardner, a Skwah elder who lives in Chilliwack. He’s heading up to Prince George to join the participants for the trek down to Vancouver. “This is a grassroots movement of First Nations and wild salmon protectors and everyone is invited to join in. The salmon are so integral, on a cultural, physical and spiritual level. It’s about our well being, and the economy. The convoy will arrive at Skway First Nation at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13 for a ceremony. stress from all directions. “There is no mistake in calling it the iconic species of B.C. Yet the governments are not doing what they should be to support and protect wild salmon on a regulatory level, Gardner said. The idea of the caravan is to “open people’s minds and hearts to the magnificent spirit of wild salmon, Gardner said, and to link coalitions and campaigns into a powerful collective force. “This caravan is also sending a message to federal parties and

candidates this spring asking them to explain what they are willing to do to protect the wild salmon and to provide for its resurgence. They set up a Wild Salmon Caravan fundraising drive at gofundme.com and raised $5,000 for the caravan, and have reached about half their target of $10,000 to date. He listed some of what he called the “principal threats to wild salmon from industrial forces: Mt. Polley mine disaster, Kinder Morgan pipeline, Enbridge proposal, the growth of open-pen fish farms in the ocean. The caravan was also going to stop at the proposed Aevitas site on Cannor Road. But since Aevitas officials pulled the plug on the

Chilliwack plant, it is not known if they will still attend the site next week or not. It’s clear wild salmon are at the centre of a “storm brewing over the province. “If the salmon go extinct it will have wide reaching implications. The idea for the caravan was raised at the Wild Salmon Convergence organized in Chase by Dawn Morrison and Janice Billy of Neskonlith/ Secwepemc Nation last October. It could potentially become reason for celebration. “We still have wild salmon to save, he said. “They show us what it means to be resilient, generous and giving. jfeinberg@theprogress.com twitter.com/chwkjourno

Happy Birthday, East Chilliwack elementary! The rural school celebrates 125 years of educating local students next week Jessica Peters The Progress In 1890, students rode to school on horses — not bikes. Climbing a tree would earn young boys a harsh punishment, and there were certainly no co-ed lunch hour games. And at the end of the day, it was the students who cleaned the classroom. Those are just a few of things students at East Chilliwack elementary have learned over the past three months, while researching their school’s long history. Next week, the school will celebrate 125 years of education. It all began in 1890, when

settler Chas Brown donated one acre of land to the newly created East Chilliwack School District. Farmers worked together to clear the site, and lumber was brought in from Popkum Mill. Later that year, the one-room school was finished. A handful of Grade 4 and 6 students were selected to work on a commemoration project. Their hard work will be fully unveiled during next Tuesday’s open house and celebration, while some of their efforts are already on display in the school’s hallway. The Grade 6 students explained their project to The Progress this week, and are invit-

ing the public to come take part in their open house next Tuesday. Their presentation doesn’t simply chronicle a school’s history. It also highlights how society has changed through the decades. “If a boy played with a girl, you’d get three lashes,” explains Dayna Derksen, while playing a game of cards would result in 10 lashes. “And for every three feet you climbed up a tree,” adds Miles Rose, “you’d get one lash.” If that weren’t bad enough, they’ve also learned that for some students the punishment was doubled at home once their parents heard of the misbehavior. Yes, those were different days. Mrs. J. Brannick and Miss Mary Jane Wallace were among the school’s first teachers, and the rules stated they could not visit

ice cream parlours. “I don’t understand why,” Derksen says. For Vanessa McRae, researching the project has shone a light on how different life is today. “You see how it’s changed and progressed over the years,” she says. “You see the discipline and how it’s changed.” For Rose, it was a chance to learn a little about social politics. “Back in the 1800s there were two Chilliwacks, the farm and the city,” he explains. “The people in the farms didn’t want to sponsor and pay taxes for the streetlights and buildings in the city.” And so when it came time to build a school, it was completed by local farmers. There was one teacher, one room, and no principal. In fact, Continued: BIRTHDAY/ p18

BIRTHDAY from page 15 the first principal didn’t arrive at East Chilliwack until 1944. It was in the ‘60s and the ‘80s that the school seemed to become more modern, he adds. The students have broken the timeline of the school down into decades, and will have key points of history on display in the library during the open house. They’ll also be sharing their new, vast knowledge as the school’s new

historians. They searched far and wide to bring as much information together as possible. They interviewed current and past staff, dug through back rooms to find old artifacts and books, and searched the Chilliwack Progress online archives. They learned of families who had all recent generations attend the school for their early learning, and they gained a new appreciation of their school. “There’s just great people

here, and the teachers are nice, said Paige Cousins. Especially because there are no lashings. • East Chilliwack Elementary’s 125th birthday, which will include a cake shaped like the original schoolhouse with hitching posts, will be held on Tuesday, May 12. Presentations begin at 12:30 p.m. in the gymnasium and the public is invited to attend.

“The Cheam Lake Wetlands has tremendous biodiversity and the FVRD is committed to protecting these areas,” explains Patricia Ross, Vice Chair of the FVRD. “By establishing a community park and trail system, we can help to better educate the community about the value of this ecosystem as well as encourage active, healthy living.” The 6th Chilliwack Scouts will be on hand to plant trees at the May 9 event. “The residents of Popkum and surrounding area are very committed to wetlands, and have already contributed many volunteer hours to help build this trail system,” said Bill Dickey, Director for Electoral Area D. “It is really gratifying to see this park finally completed and I look forward to watching it grow and develop in the years to come.” The provincial $30-million Community Recreation Program was developed to help local governments meet the costs of capital projects that make communities healthier, more active places in which to live. In total, 98 recreation projects throughout B.C. were funded through this program to help build everything from bike parks, trails, fitness facilities and walkways to playgrounds, rinks and recreation centres.

Community Garage sale Saturday kicks off Cultus events Jennifer Feinberg The Progress There should be some good deals around Cultus Lake Park on Saturday morning. A Community-wide Garage Sale is one of the first events rolling out from the newly established Community Events and Activities Committee, said Rose Turcasso, Cultus Lake Park Board commissioner. “It’s about creating community spirit, which in turn fosters community pride,” said Turcasso, who also chairs the events committee. “We want to get people excited about Cultus Lake Park.” Most events they are organizing are geared to be no-cost or low-cost to make them family-oriented and more accessible

to everyone. The garage sale starting on the morning of on May 9 could become an annual event, and they’re hoping to showcase their new and improved beach-side market at the same time. “We’re out to really celebrate Cultus Lake Park with these events,” said Lillian Newhouse, a member of the committee. This first year of the Cultus garage sale they’re printing out maps that they’ll hand out from the kiosk on Sunnyside Boulevard starting at 8 p.m. on May 9. More than 40 residents have signed up so far. Free parking will be offered at Main Beach Lots A, B, as well as on Sunnyside, Lakeshore Drive until 2 p.m. Also watch for all-day fun coming up at Cultus

Lake Day on June 13, and free movie nights later this summer on Friday nights at Gazebo C on main beach at dusk. “We’re trying to pro-

mote the feeling you get at the lake. There’s an ambiance here and we want to share it with the whole community.” jfeinberg@theprogress.com twitter.com/chwkjourno

For long-term success with healthy eating, deciding what to eat should be simple. Often, diet plans will instil complicated rules, such as counting calo-

ries or points, or breaking down each meal into grams of carbohydrates, fat and protein. While counting and measuring can be helpful at the beginning to

learn proper portions, such vigilant eating is not realistic for long term. To simplify healthy eating, consider the meal syntax. In lin-

guistics, syntax is the set of rules, principles, and processes that govern the structure of sentences in a given language. Meal syntax is simply the guidelines that govern the structure of most meals. The meal syntax I am Tanja going to SHAW share is what we recommend at Ascend Fitness to help our clients improve their energy, lose weight and fuel their workouts. Depending on personal preferences, the exact make up of your regular diet may be slightly different. For example, higher protein starches such as quinoa and amaranth may make up a larger portion of your meal if you eat little or no meat. The ideal meal syntax for energy and weight loss includes: 1. Vegetables: Aim for half your meal to be non-starchy veggies such as salad greens, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes and peppers. 2. Protein: Include a portion of protein (approximately the size of the palm of your hand) at each meal. Sources of protein include lean meats, beans, legumes, tofu, eggs, and dairy. 3. Fats: Include at least a thumb size portion, or a tablespoon of fat at each meal. Good sources of fat include oils, seeds, nuts, fatty fish and avocado. 4. Starchy carbohydrates: If desired, include a small a portion of starchy carbohydrates (fruit, root veggies, whole and intact grains). Not all meals need to include starches, as usually there are enough carbohydrates from vegetables. The meal syntax is meant to be a simple guideline, not necessarily exact measurements. Some days you may have less protein; other days you may eat more. Some days you will eat a larger portion of vegetables; other days you may not have any, and so Continued: MEAL/ p23

Community The Progress Sardis secondary students spent a weekend immersed in the art of the spoken word, and emerged as even better writers. The Spoken Word team at Sardis took part in the Hullabaloo B.C. Slam Poetr y Championships, at the Vancouver Public Library over the last weekend in April. And they emerged in second place for youth groups in the province. This is the team’s second year of competing, said Sardis English teacher Jen Wieler, and once again she’s

in small groups as well. The competition, which included the chance to watch spoken word performers from across B.C., ran for two and a half days. It’s an intense weekend that encour-

ages the young writers and performers to excel at their craft. “They all say it’s the highlight of their year, Wieler said. “They get inspired to keep writing.

MEAL from page 22 on. Also, it’s important to note that not all meals will include all the components, but aim for an average over the day. For instance, if your breakfast is two hard-boiled eggs and an orange, you may load up your lunch and dinner with more veggies. Eating right doesn’t have to be complicated. Once you get to know approximately how much you should be eating to feel your best, simplify your eating by thinking about meal syntax. Enjoy the peace of mind knowing that you are feeding your body well!

Eric J. Welsh, The Progress

“There were a couple teams I was thinking about, but this was the best fit for me,” he said. “I’ve heard the program is all about the players and not the personal records and so-forth. Coming from Salisbury and the Wolf Pack, I know what it’s like to win, and Chilliwack’s got a history of winning.” Sukumaran had three goals and eight points in six national tournament outings, and scored the overtime winner in the championship game. The Montreal native and his Wolf Pack teammates knocked off the nation’s first, third and fifth ranked teams en-route to the title. Sukumaran’s winner came with 20.4 seconds on the clock against the ninth ranked New Jersey Avalanche. “I’ve dreamt of something like that for years and years, to be that guy who scores that big-time goal to win the big-time tournament,” he said. “It was a dream come true, just unbelievable.” Sukumaran, Sharf, Kane and Giuttari come to Chilliwack with NCAA commitments already in hand. Sukumaran has committed to the defending Frozen Four champion Providence Friars, Sharf to Colgate, Kane to Vermont and Giuttari to Brown. Having eight players

from one team commit to a BCHL squad is almost unprecedented. Tatarnic can’t recall a similar scenario in his career. “A big thing for us is having guys like (Craig) Puffer and (Tipper) Higgins have a great experience, then go back home and

talk about it,” Tatarnic said. “I know Vincent (Desharnais) talked to Jeremy Germain and his dad. I’ve always said players are your best recruiters. They’re the ones who sell your program.” “We (coaches) can sell it till we’re blue in the face, and of course

we think it’s the greatest place to play,” he continued. “But you’ve always got to have some backup, some player testimonials.” Tatarnic went into the offseason with the stated goal of making his team grittier and harder to play against. While guys like

Sukumaran, Kane and Germain bring plenty of skill, this group also has sandpaper. “Sukumaran plays the game hard and he’s a good leader,” Tatarnic said. “He’s skilled, but he’s also very competitive and gritty.” Continued: CHIEFS/ p25

ONE-STOP from Front

“Kane’s the same in that he plays the game hard and will go right through you,” he added. “He’s not big but he’s strong, and he’s got a high skill set.” Germain is a biggerbodied center who plays a sneaky game. He’s also the son of a former pro. Eric Germain once played four games for the National Hockey League’s Los Angeles Kings and logged hundreds of games in the minors. “You may not notice Jeremy all the time, but he’s always around the puck, and when the scoresheet is handed in at the end of the game, he’s found a way to produce,” Tatarnic said. Sukumaran called Giuttari the best defenceman he’s ever played with and Tatarnic believes he’ll be a key member of the blueline corps. “Steady eddie up and down the ice, doesn’t make mistakes,” Tatarnic said. “He’s just a solid defenceman and with some of the more

offensive minded guys we’ve got on the blueline we thought it was very important to add a guy like Zach.” Jake Smith had a so-so regular season, (31-12-7-19) but exploded for four goals in six national tournament games. “He really wanted to be a Chief and that’s what kept drawing us to him,” Tatarnic said. “He had high-end teams talking to him and he wanted to be here.” Sukumaran called Sharf the best faceoff man he’s seen, and Tatarnic threw a Jake Hand comparison on the table. “I don’t want to make a direct comparison, but he’s a big kid with good hands who can skate,” Tatarnic said. Benshadle was a high draft pick in the USHL and can play center or wing. He impressed Tatarnic by playing through a sports hernia at nationals, producing three goals and four points in five outings. “He played with a lot of pain and showed us his character level,” the

coach said. And finally Esposito, whose greatest asset, according to Tatarnic, isn’t his last name but his compete level. “What separated him from some of the other goalies we saw at our spring camp was the way he battled and never gave up on pucks,” Tatarnic said. “He’s very mobile with great feet. He’s won a national championship and he really wants to be here.” So, mission accomplished with the offseason roster rebuild? Just about everything is set, with a couple balls still in the air. “We still want to be a high-tempo team, but one that’s a little grittier,” Tatarnic said. “We haven’t added a lot of junior experience, but we have added players who’ve played and performed in a high-pressure tournament.” “This is definitely a different team than we had last year,” he summed up. “But on paper, we’re happy. We like it.” Get BCHL info online at bchl.ca

Speedway drivers finding ways to combat cortisol The Agassiz Speedway season revved up with opening day April 25 and continues Saturday night with racing in five divisions. Back this year to provide insight is local driver Robert Adams. It’s not the competitor with the fastest car that a race car driver dreads most. It’s not the flag-man either, or the wall you may hit at 100 kilometres per hour. No. It’s C21-H30-05, also known as Cortisol! Basically it’s the opposite of testosterone. Higher levels of testosterone (in men and women) lead to increased feelings of confidence, decreased anxiety and an improved ability to deal with stress. Cortisol does the opposite, increasing stress and anxiety. And drivers work very hard to make sure it doesn’t hamper their race. According to one study, when healthy human males watched a 60 minute humor video, their cortisol levels

decreased significantly. And so, you may see a driver watching a funny goat or pig video on their phones before getting in his car. Another study found that vitamin C supplements, taken at any time, rapidly clear cortisol levels. When vitamin C is administered before a stressful situation (in this study it was public speaking) it blunts the stressinduced rise in cortisol. For that reason, our drivers may appear to be popping pills like there is no tomorrow. Relax! It’s just vitamins. We hope! Sleeping more is not only good for stress reduction, it’s also one of the best ways to increase your natural testosterone production. You can double your testosterone levels and reduce cortisol by sleeping more. So when you see drivers laid out like drunken sailors, they are just trying to gain a few ZZ’s to help prepare for the race. And finally, the best way. What if I told you that in as little as two minutes, you could

increase your testosterone levels and lower your circulating cortisol just by changing your posture. That’s a scientifically proven fact. A Harvard study found that if you switch from low-power (arms crossed, hunched, etc.) body language, into highpower (opened up, tall, confident etc.) body language, your hormones will act accordingly. Simply put, two minutes spent in a ‘power pose posture’ increased a subjects’ testosterone levels by 20 per cent while decreasing cortisol by 25 per cent. That’s why you may see drivers in the pits exit a washroom and stand like Wonder Woman for a couple of minutes. It’s OK. Chances are they are just getting ready for the next race. You should only be concerned if they are dressed like her. We race again Saturday at 7 p.m. but have a meet and greet at 6 p.m. for all the fans and kids. It’s four for 44$ day. Four admission, four drinks and four hotdogs, all for only $44. Visit agassizspeedway.com or our Facebook page.

OBITUARIES

Lefurgy, Edward William (Eddy) Passed away unexpectedly on May 5, 2015 at the Chilliwack General Hospital. Born in South Porcupine, Ontario November 2, 1937 to John and Mary (Coyne) Lefurgy, Eddy was the youngest and sole surviving sibling of 10 children. Being a child of The Great Depression, and growing up in a mining town would define his character. Generosity, a hard work ethic, and progressive attitudes towards his fellow human beings that were shaped by his life experiences are traits everyone recognized in him. At 15, Eddy lied about his age to take a job in the gold mines of Northern Ontario. In his twenties, he answered the call to 'move West, young man,' and Eddy continued in the mining and heavy construction industry in BC, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. Eddy took pride in helping build the country, assisting with the drilling and blasting of such places as the Bennett Dam projects, and the Mt MacDonald Tunnel break-through. Coming from a family of miners, Eddy would see the dangerous working conditions, and choose to stand up for human lives: working in the Labour Movement, including being an executive member of the Rock and Tunnel workers Union 168. He would often remind people that in the mines, horses were granted an 8 hour work day first while men were still working 12; safety, like anything worth having, was never given - it had to be fought for. After 40 years as a miner, he changed his work path and became a security officer serving at various sites throughout the Fraser Valley. Eddy spent almost a decade in this role at the Chilliwack General Hospital where his skills, respect, compassion and caring endeared him to staff and patients alike. In 1976 Eddy married Estelle (Britton) and in 1978 moved from Vancouver to Ryder Lake, Chilliwack as he wanted to raise his family closer to nature. His pride and joy were his four sons Michael (Veronica) Pennsylvania; Gerald (Vanessa), Sydney, Australia; Ryder (Kara), Chilliwack; and Edward, White Rock BC. To complete his happiness were his grandchildren Kaelyn, Sierra , Hannah (PA) and Lily, Ella and Theodore (Chilliwack). His faithful canine, Dempster, stands guard on his behalf. Eddy was a friend of Bill's for 35 years. As per his wishes cremation has taken place. A Celebration of a Remarkable Life will take place on Saturday, May 16, 2015 1pm at the Ryder Lake Farmers and Women's Institute Hall on Elk View Road, Ryder Lake, Chilliwack. The family requests anyone attending to bring a vase of flowers and following the Celebration the attendees will in turn give them, on Eddy's behalf, to a local child or senior.

Green, Phyllis

Phyllis Green passed away on April 26, 2015 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer with her family at her side. Phyllis was born June 11, 1947 in Vancouver, BC to Philip and Muriel Lacey. Phyllis married Lorne Green on August 13, 1966. She was a proud mother of five children and at the age of 38 went back to University and obtained her degree in Bachelor of Social Work. She had a career with the Ministry of Social Services in Child Protection. Phyllis always looked forward to big family gatherings on Marble Hill, tending to her garden and reading a good book. She always put family first, interested in her growing grandchildren and great grandchildren and learning about their next adventures. She will be remembered as a person who learnt from her mistakes. Phyllis believed that her Christian Faith was the solid ground she walked on. Phyllis leaves to cherish her memory her husband Lorne Green; her children Robert Green, James (Kristy), Doreena Jackson, David (Amy) and Shelly; her grandchildren Walker, Tyler, Kenna, Daniel (Jade) and daughter Primrose, Dhillon, Tolila, Cohen, Evelyn, Felicia, Taylor, Brenden, Austin and Natasha. Memorial service for Phyllis will be held at Central Community Church, 46100 Chilliwack Central Road, Saturday, May 16th, 2015 at 2:00pm. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 306-922-4729 www.grays.ca

FRASER VALLEY REGIONAL DISTRICT NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING

The purpose of Bylaw 1306 is to create a new Suburban Residential Three (SBR-3) zone in West Popkum, Electoral Area “D” and rezone the subject lands to SBR-3 to facilitate a proposed 29 lot subdivision with a minimum lot size of 800 m2.
