PARKSVILLE BEACH
Service in jeopardy This time, it’s the popular kayak rental business JOHN HARDING
editor@pqbnews.com
Another popular service on Parksville’s famous beach is in danger of disappearing. Kevin Forsythe of Windsurfing Parksville told city council on Monday night he has been asked to leave the location he’s had for years, providing paddle boards, kayaks and windsurfing lessons. Forsythe was asking council for a spot somewhere in the park to continue his rental business after he said the owners of the boarded-up Parksville Beach Resort told him he must vacate their property just off the boardwalk. This follows the closure of the concession in the park. Council has convened a special meeting for Tuesday (6 p.m. at city hall) to presumably make decisions around a request for proposals related to food trucks setting up in the park (see more on this below). On Monday night, Forsythe told council he has been renting his equipment at the current location since 2008. He said 60 per cent of his business is done with tourists, the rest with locals. He also said he doesn’t want any special favours from the city to operate on public land somewhere else in the park. “I don’t expect you guys to pick up the bill for anything,” said Forsythe. “I’m not asking for anything other than permission to be there. I want to create a win-win situation for the city.” City councillors seemed amenable to the idea. “I think this is extremely important for Parksville,” said Coun. Al Greir. “I think we need more entertainment, more things in the summer for tourists to do. We should make some changes to keep Kevin there.” See SPECIAL MEETING, page A9

HOMELESS IN PARKSVILLE QUALICUM BEACH
Maggy’s many challenges CANDACE WU
news@pqbnews.com
Maggy Gisle will celebrate one year of sobriety this month, but like most things in her illustrious — at times unbelievable — life, the accomplishment is overshadowed by a stroke of bad luck. As of May 1, Gisle has been homeless with two teenagers in tow, a moving container brimming with furnishings and no place to put anything, let alone a place to sleep.
She doesn’t seem infuriated or resentful, but hopeless; perhaps exhausted. “There are loopholes in the system,” she told The NEWS in a state of frustration Tuesday morning. Gisle explained she had a mutual agreement to end tenancy with her current landlord and planned on moving into a different house this month. However, because she’s on disability, she wasn’t able to secure a dam-
age deposit (instead she has to fill out an application) and at the 11th hour the home was snapped up by renters who were able to put a damage deposit down in cash. Gisle recognizes neither landlord is in the wrong, but the situation certainly leaves her out in the cold. And now she’s faced with finding a place to rent in arguably one of the country’s most desirable tourist destinations on the brink of summer. See HOUSING, page A7

No leads in string of thefts from vehicles
CandaCe Wu news@pqbnews.com
Police say 30 vehicles have been broken into in the last two weeks in this region. “What is common in all of them is that it looks like the vast majority (of vehicles) were unlocked,” said Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman. He said stolen items include “purses to electronics to small amounts of change.” Foreman said the dollar value of stolen goods is undetermined at this point. He said in most cases no damage was done to the vehicles as the suspect or suspects were easily allowed access through unlocked doors. “There are no leads at this point,” Foreman confirmed Wednesday morning. “But if people call in there is an availability for us to lift fingerprints; we want to catch the person doing this.” By leaving your vehicle door unlocked, Foreman said you become an “easy target” for theft. “While it may even be just a few dollars the important thing to remember is by leaving your door unlocked you are perpetuating further crime,” he said. “You’re feeding whatever addiction they may have.” A similar string of thefts occurred last year targeting unlocked vehicles in Parksville Qualicum Beach. In that case, Foreman said the individual, who was eventually caught by police, admitted to simply walking down the street and checking for unlocked vehicles. Foreman said he doesn’t believe the same individual is the culprit in this recent string of attacks. “Take out your valuables and lock your doors, it’s that simple,” advised Foreman. “These people are not breaking in through windows…Basically we’re feeding these people’s habits and making it really easy to commit crimes.”

The Next One could be teeing it up at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort in Qualicum Beach this week. Canadians who follow golf have taken notice of the meteoric rise of 17-year-old Brooke Henderson, who finished third against the best female players in the world last month at the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic in San Francisco. Henderson turned pro in December of last year after a stellar amateur career that included the 2013 Canadian Amateur title and runnerup at the 2014 U.S. Amateur. While still an amateur, Henderson finished tied for 10th at the U.S. Women’s Open. In 2013, the Smith Falls, Ont.-born Henderson won the CN Future Links

Pacific Championship at Crowne Isle near Comox. This year’s CN Future Links Pacific Championship is set for Friday through Sunday at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort in Qualicum Beach. Admission is free and local residents are encouraged to come and watch some great golf and cheer on these rising stars, including a few of our own. “We have four local players who are competing this weekend,” said Pheasant Glen head professional and academy instructor Gordon Melissa. “All four of them are training in our Junior Golf Academy Elite Program here at Pheasant Glen. It is very exciting for us to be hosting the first tour event on the Golf Canada Future Links 2015 Tour schedule.” The four local players are Carson Arcuri, Kevin Bishop, Jake Lane and Spencer Rhodes. “This will be the strongest field of the year on the Future Links tour and it will be a great experience for our local kids” said Melissa.

Parksville Quilt House Quilters Guild
Passing through generations
Tri-annual show, which runs May 29-31 at Oceanside Place Arena in Parksville, celebrates how quilt making continues to pass from one generation to the next
Jessica skelton reporter@pqbnews.com
Marie Labine and her daughter Wendy Parker practically beam as they show off the family quilts. There are plenty of samples to look at, too. Dozens of pieces hang on the walls and sit stacked on shelves. Some work made by Labine’s great-grandmother rests neatly folded on the table. “One of those things about a quilting family is we all have beautiful beds,” said Parker, opening the bedroom door to show off more handiwork. “It (quilting) is an addiction,” said Labine with a laugh. “The bug must have caught.” There is reason for their current madness, however. The Qualicum Beach mother and daughter team are getting ready to enter several pieces into the Parksville Quilt House Quilters Guild tri-annual show later this month. It’s a particularly unique moment as Parker and We’re passing on a Labine are the emheritage to the bodiment of the generations theme for this year’s behind us event: “generation Donna Mcaskile to generation.” “We wanted to celebrate quilting and celebrate how far we’ve come,” said Lola Denesyk, a past president of the guild and team leader of the upcoming show. Denesyk said the show will contain work from three distinct groups: those aged 18 years and under in junior fibre arts, those aged in their late 20s to late 70s — who make up the guild’s regular membership — and those no longer with us in the heritage section. “(We’re) able to celebrate all generations,” she said. “Everything is under one roof.” According to Barb Wilson, one of the co-chairs for the event, around 400-450 quilts in 10 different categories and a variety of styles, sizes and levels of craftsmanship will be displayed in the main room. “It looks quite nice,” she said. “Very

colourful.” The work was created by 150 guild members, who submitted between one and six quilts each, said Fran Henney, one of two people in charge of entries. “We have spectacular quilts,” she said, adding that she believes every quilt is beautiful and deserves to be shown. “We want to represent as many members as we can.” While this is not an official juried show, the quilters are vying for the past-presidents’ prize, a ribbon for best in show as voted by the public and a top-three ranking chosen by the membership. “The competition is fierce,” said Labine, though she adds it’s all well-natured. The heritage section, on the other hand, will be placed together with the junior fibre arts in a room separate from the main competition. Labine said she plans to submit one of her mother’s quilts, a piece featured in the first Parksville Quilt House Quilters Quilt Show. Some of the other works set to enter the heritage section even predate the guild, which Denesyk said was founded in 1979 and incorporated in 1981. Donna McAskile, a guild past-president and one of the show’s PR co-ordinators, said she will submit a quilt made out of embroidered panels her grandmother and mother had stitched on old Robin Hood flour sacks. “It’s really inspiring,” McAskile said of the family connections in the necessity-turned-art form that is quilt making. “It’s a really important part of quilting.” McAskile said the guild has seen a number of mother-daughter teams like Labine and Parker over the years, as well as many more lone members who were introduced to the art form by their relatives. Not everybody has that familial push, however, and Wilson said she hopes this show will also help promote an interest in quilting to everyone. BOOK BEF OR MAY 20 th E FOR 201 5 and

Marie Labine, left, and daughter Wendy Parker show off a tiny fraction of the quilts they’ve made over the years. Between them they hold a quilt made by Labine’s mother, which they plan to enter into the heritage section of the upcoming Parksville Quilt House Quilters Guild tri-annual show.
“We’re passing on a heritage to the generations behind us,” said McAskile. The upcoming event will also act as a fundraiser Parksville Quilt House Quilters Guild. While some of the proceeds will help run the organization for the next three years, the main purpose of the show is to raise funds for their Comfort Quilt charity program, said Denesyk. This arm of the guild makes quilts for care homes and hospitals in the mid-Island. Helen Green, chair of the Comfort Quilts, estimated the group has donated $25,000 worth of goods since June 2014. “(There is) always someone who needs a quilt,” said Parker.

Golf Canada National Development team coach Robert Ratcliffe said he expects several of his Golf Canada National Team to have strong showings this weekend at Pheasant Glen. There are only six regional junior golf tournaments in the country that are part of the CN Future Links Championships. Pheasant Glen is landing some prestigious tournaments, including this event and a big one next year, the B.C. Amateur. For pairing and tee times for the CN Future Lionks event this weekend, visit: http://golfcanada.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/rcga15/event/ rcga151/index.htm. “Golf Canada is pleased to open this year’s championship season at Pheasant Glen. The CN Future Links Championships are great platforms for Canada’s juniors to demonstrate their skills,” said Mary Beth McKenna, who will serve as the competition’s tournament director. “The Pacific Championship has always been an entertaining and exciting event and we look forward to seeing this strong field on display. With several past CN Future Links champions and Team Canada members in the field of competition, this year’s Pacific Championship will allow newcomers to measure their abilities against many of last year’s finest while established competitors will be able to gauge their progression and growth.” Alex Francois of Burnaby — the 2014 champion of this event — will be on-hand to defend his title. Team Canada’s Development Squad will be well-represented at the event with 10 of the 11 members in the field of play, split evenly between the junior girls and boys divisions. Gisle said she receives $575 per month from her disability cheque to cover the cost of housing, but according to the B.C. Non Profit Housing Association’s rental housing index, the average rent in Parksville is $871 per month, a difference of nearly $300. “Short-term housing for families is just not available,” she said. “There’s no tolerance for circumstance and directly, I’d say disability doesn’t support families moving at all, for any reason…We lost that place because I didn’t have the damage deposit in hand — all I had was paperwork to fill out.” Qualicum Beach Coun. Neil Horner, council’s liaison to the Oceanside Task Force on Homelessness, said while people may not think homelessness exists in picturesque Parksville Qualicum Beach — it’s definitely here and it’s a problem. “It’s not terribly visible,” said Horner. “People aren’t sleeping in front of doorways, but don’t kid yourself out in the rural areas it’s there.” The task force and the Society of Organized Services (SOS) are currently working on a homelessness prevention program (HPP) in partnership with B.C. I don’t know if anywhere will ever have that, but in a lot of places it’s getting a lot worse and if we can keep a handle on it and keep it from getting worse that’s good.” But it’s not good enough. Gisle has used most of the local services available for those in need and she’s still struggling. “The Manna Van covers a huge umbrella and so does the SOS and the Salvation Army, but they’re still not meeting the amount of homeless people there area,” she said. “The resources in our community are at full capacity and then some. We’re not meeting the needs of the people we have here. We’ve got lots of people who are like me, who have to rely on soup kitchens and food banks.” She said she appreciates the services provided, yet often feels her life doesn’t fit within “the guidelines of the system,” despite turning her life around from what it once was. Today, Gisle, a 49-yearold First Nation woman with a petite yet healthy frame carrying an uncomfortable-looking neck brace wears a sanguine smile begging a thousand questions.

It results in tremors, rigid muscles and slow, difficult movements. Scientists have, for years, thought there was a significant environmental factor in the development of Parkinson’s Disease. A new study is showing that a specific group of pesticides, which inhibit an enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase, leads to a 6-fold increase in Parkinson’s risk to those exposed. They stress the importance of protection for those who handle these agents but also call for the removal of these chemicals from the market. A metabolite of the notorious pesticide, DDT, has been associated with an increase in the risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease by up to 4 times. While obviously not the only factor in the risk of Alzheimer’s, it is curious that the timing of increased Alzheimer’s rates correspond to DDTs presence in our relatively recent environmental history. DDT has been banned in many countries, but is still used in some parts of the world. There is much emphasis on lifestyle choices in disease vs factors which can’t be changed, such as genetics. However, another consideration is environmental hazards - and we all have a responsibility to see that they are addressed.

Driver had medical emergency
An update to a story first reported in The NEWS on Tuesday CandaCe Wu news@pqbnews.com
The driver of a black Mercedes Benz caught in a suspicious hit and run
along Corcan Road Friday is being released from hospital after suffering a medical condition, which may explain a strange series of events, according to police. Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman said a tow truck company got in touch with police after The NEWS first reported the accident Tuesday, where
a luxury vehicle smashed into a rural fence causing “significant” damages. “The tow truck company advised they did go get the car and apparently the driver suffered a medical emergency and had to go to hospital,” Foreman said, noting the driver is in his mid-50s. He said police are waiting for the driver to contact police.
FRAUD
Postie may have saved victim $8,000 CandaCe Wu news@pqbnews.com
A Canada Post employee’s keen eye may have saved a Qualicum Beach senior thousands of dollars. According to police, a 75-year-old woman wired approximately $8,000 to fraud artists claiming to be lawyers and insurance agents representing the victim’s son. “She was out around $8,000 and when she came in (to the post office) again to make another transaction a post person said ‘Hold on, you should contact police,’” Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman told The NEWS. The Canada Post employee noticed “suspicious money transfers” and im-
mediately stopped the victim. Police are investigating the incident, commonly known as the Family Emergency Scam. Foreman explains the scam is operated by fraudsters claiming to be a family member, a close friend of a family member or even a lawyer representing a member of your family who will advise the potential victim about an “urgent situation” that requires immediate funds. He said “common themes” have been that the family member was arrested or got into an accident while traveling abroad and noted the fraudster will then claim fees are required immediately for hospital or medical
expenses, or even bail. “Protect yourself by never voluntarily giving out a family member’s name or information to an unknown caller and always question any urgent request for money,” said Foreman. “When in doubt please seek the advice of friends or family.” Since 2009, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) has received 17,132 emergency scam complaints were received accounting for more than $24 million dollars in reported losses. The average loss per victim was $3,743.07. Of the 17,132 complaints, there were 11,889 emergency scam occurrences reported by Canadians.
REAL ESTATE STATISTICS
Spring housing market is buoyant
Sales in the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB) coverage area rose once again in April, reflecting a buoyant spring housing market, according to a news release from VIREB. A total of 450 single-family homes sold last month compared to 420 in March 2015, with year-over-year sales up 25 per cent. Inventory levels continue to decline, with active listings down 12 per cent from April 2014. BCREA Chief Economist Cameron Muir stated that housing sales are up throughout British Columbia, most notably in the southern half of the province.
“We’re seeing above-average sales throughout British Columbia for the first time in many years,” said Muir. “Home buyers are taking advantage of low interest rates and returning to the housing market, which is excellent news for the provincial economy.” In April 2015, the benchmark price for a single-family home in the VIREB coverage area was $328,500, up 3.41 per cent from 2014. Benchmark pricing tracks the value of a typical home in the reported area. The April 2015 benchmark price of a single-family home in the Campbell River area was
$273,100, up just under two per cent from April 2014. In the Comox Valley, the benchmark price was $324,200, up slightly over last year. Duncan reported a benchmark price of $294,000, an increase of 3.97 per cent over the same month in 2014. Nanaimo’s benchmark price rose 3.60 per cent to $347,500, while the Parksville-Qualicum area saw its benchmark price increase by 2.69 per cent to $357,100. The price for a benchmark home in Port Alberni was $188,900, virtually unchanged from this time last year — NEWS Staff/VIREB

Young golf guns
A
nother sure sign of spring — golf season is heating up. Even if you can’t play great golf, it’s fun to watch it. At Pheasant Glen this week (Friday through Sunday) are some of the country’s top junior golfers, competing in the CN Future Links Pacific Championship. Just after you think you are doing well in this game, when you finish with a solid par on 18 and admire your scorecard that reads something less than 90, there is always someone in the clubhouse who birdied 18 and carded a 78. Just after you feel good about a nicely-played bunker shot, the three putt from 15 feet follows. Just after you stripe a drive right down the middle, 250plus yards, you chunk an eight iron, overshoot the green with your wedge, chip on lamely and two-putt for a double bogey. It can be a maddening game. But to paraphrase Winston Churchill when he was speaking about the parliamentary system of government, it’s the worst game in the world except for all the others. We illustrate these frustrations to prepare you for what you will see at Pheasant Glen this week. There will be some 14 year-olds who will shoot rounds in the low 70s, perhaps even the 60s. Some 16-year-old is going to hammer a drive 300 yards. Kids too young for a drivers’ licence are going to easily reach the par fives in two. Try not to be angry, or jealous, or disappointed in your game. This is a time to celebrate youth — it’s not about your game, or you, this weekend. It is, however, a bit about Pheasant Glen. Rebuffed by the town in its attempts to build housing, a clubhouse and other amenities that would enhance considerably the tourism industry of the region and the tax coffers of the town, the Dutton family has not pouted. To the contrary. The family continues to spend money on the course, on rebuilding the clubhouse/restaurant, on junior golf programs. If you have any experience or knowledge about golf resorts elsewhere that couldn’t get their housing plan going, you know this is not the norm. Next year, Pheasant Glen will host the most prestigious golf tournament in this province, the B.C. Amateur. But this week it’s the young guns. We urge the people of the region to get out on the course to show support for both these young athletes and Pheasant Glen. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters Where are our healthcare dollars Re: John Harding’s editorial in the April 30 edition of The NEWS (‘Less will be the norm’). Our Canadian medicare system is based on universality and one of the pillars of this universality is “equal access for all” — rich or poor. Some suggest that expanding private surgical clinics will shorten the queue by allowing those with money to have quick access to procedures, then trickle down savings. Several points need consideration. These clinics will need to be regulated — at some expense to the taxpayer. When a for-profit surgery goes awry and the patient requires higher levels of care, the patient goes to the publicly-funded hospital, which will be unable to consider the risk/needs of that patient in the morning bed planning strategy meeting. Someone gets bumped. Another taxpayer cost. Currently, surgical clinics do operate — some on public funds to reduce wait lists and for-profit clinics in Vancouver. Forprofit surgical clinics can only operate within a certain “menu” of surgeries as some surgeries (open heart for example) require extensive machinery and expensive back up services like surgical ICUs. Those wanting to “jump the queue” for more invasive surgeries currently have the option to travel to the U.S. and experience the costs of for-profit care. One huge problem in the delays and backlogs of local surgeries is the lack of surgical bed availability, which is significantly impacted by medical patients occupying surgical beds and long-term care (LTC) patients occupying medical

beds. Build/fund LTC beds and the hospital becomes less backlogged, fewer surgeries are delayed or canceled and surgeons and anesthesiologists alike will be attracted to a system that flows freely and allows them to practice at a less frustrating pace. For many years, our system worked well. It is not coincidence that many of our health care problems have arisen with bloated administrations, regionalization and as letter writer Yvonne Zarowny recently wrote, “Grandchild debt,” our governments “shoveling up” our wealth to their influential masters — with us paying for it through our taxes as well as our de-funded public education, health care and social programs. Governments, federal and provincial need to be more transparent and wiser with our assets and taxes so that there are more dollars in the 60 per cent going to health and education. visit the princess charlotte islands? In honour of our newly born Princess Charlotte, perhaps we in British Columbia should locate a pair of islands that could be renamed the Princess Charlotte Islands. A good prospect for this would be in the Broken Island Group. Looking ahead, our little princess is now fourth in line to the throne. Who knows in time Charlotte may just make it and then by royal decree we could rename the Princess Charlotte Islands as the Queen Charlotte Islands. I am already toasting that eventuality.

distracted driving needs bigger fines On the May 4 Global TV news, there was a driver caught on camera in around Nanaimo curling her hair. Well I do hope this was seen by ICBC and the RCMP and that this driver was tracked down and fined real good. This should be tracked down by the police, as they do for others that are reported, tracked and fined, without even being stopped by the police. Whether on your cell phone, laptop or putting makeup on, this is distracted driving and should be dealt with. I’m hoping people get video or pictures and the plate number of this and send them to ICBC and the police to go after them and hit them hard in the pocket book. It’s my life and my family or passengers life at risk, including their own. I have been cut off by distracted drivers on cell phone sand I shake my head at them and get a smile and the finger. Guess they think it’s a big laugh or a joke, well it won’t be when they are hauled into court and sued for an accident that they caused and the lawsuit that will happen. ICBC should go further and hit the distracted driver harder, like bigger fines, the loss of their safe drivers discount and give them more demerit points so they pay more. Even suspend their drivers licence for a period of time, like they do for impaired drivers. Make them pay before they hurt someone. If they are the N drivers, send them back to re-do everything and school them on distracted drivers and hit them harder to learn right from wrong. Pat MurPhy Parksville

Sign up for veggie box program Nanoose Edibles, Qualicum Cheeseworks and Radius Food Co. work together to bring boxes of farm-fresh produce to the residents of Parksville Qualicum Beach Nanoose Edibles Certified Organic Farm is offering a nutritionally dense certified organic weekly produce box. The so-called Spring Box is available through the kind co-operation of Qualicum Cheeseworks (cheeseworks.ca) and Radius Food Co. (radiusfoodCo.com), who assisted with publicity and distribution. This happy collaboration dates back many years when Clarke Gourlay, owner of Qualicum Cheeseworks, and Barbara Ebell, owner of Nanoose Edibles farm, used to be on the Morning Show with Bruce Williams to talk about locally-produced food and provide food demonstrations. The Spring Box program will run from May 13 - June 21. During that time, the boxes will be ready for pick-up at Qualicum Cheeseworks Farmgate store from 2:30 p.m. till 5 p.m. every Wednesday. The box will contain a variety of farm-grown produce from Nanoose Edibles, including salad greens, nutritional greens, spinach, radish, bunched collards, kale, chard,

assorted herbs, new potatoes, carrots , green onions, early garlic, and — if we are lucky — the season’s first strawberries. This box program can only work, however, if there are a sufficient number of people willing to participate. Please forward this information to friends and co-workers, or arrange with a friend to share a box if you are a small household. The price is $240 pre-paid for eight weeks. Nanoose Edibles says it will follow the Spring Box with two additional box programs: one through the summer and one in the fall, which will begin in September. You can check their website nanooseediblesfarm.com for further information and the sign-up sheet. You can also contact Nanoose Edibles at neorg@telus.net. Nanoose Edibles says it thanks everyone for supporting your local certified organic farm and other food endeavors in your community. —NEWS Staff/Nanoose Edibles

QUALICUM BEACH LAWN BOWLING CLUB
New season officially open
Some big tournaments coming this year, spectators welcome
A cool but bright spring day greeted bowlers at the Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club for the kick off of this year’s outdoor bowling season. The clubhouse, the greens and the gardens are in tip top shape, according to a news release from the club. “The beauty is further enhanced by the charm of the neighbouring Qualicum Village (Kiwanis) housing project,” said the release. Coun. Neil Horner officially opened the sea-
son by rolling the first bowl last week. The club said it will be a busy season for bowling at this and other clubs in the region. Qualicum Beach will be hosting three major tournaments, starting with the McPherson Group Mixed Fours on May 9-10. In addition, the club will be home to the provincial men’s fours on July 3-5 featuring the best of the best in the province. Spectators are always welcome to watch the games, tour this great facility, have a coffee and try out the sport. Take a walk with your doc B.C.’s annual Walk with your Doc will see nearly 70 doctors on Vancouver Island prescribe exercise to their patients as well as host 14 walking events in an effort to get people in local communities outside and moving. All residents are invited to participate in these free events in various Island communities from May 9-17. They will receive a free pedometer by signing up at www.walkwithyourdoc.ca. The website connects B.C. walkers with photos, stories and a map of walks around B.C. Walkers can enter a photo contest for the chance to win one of five FitBits by sharing their walk photos on Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #WalkWithYourDoc.

Kennedy-Anne Pollard-Wright
I would describe myself as an extremely busy person. Between being the grad president, trying to keep my straight A record in check, and also trying to find the school I want to go to, I don’t have a lot of extra time. I am trying to find a program or apprenticeship to get me into crane operating to help raise the number of successful women in the trades - specifically in the construction trades. What’s really special to me, is being able to say I’ve done something rare, and I’ve dominated it!
Charlotte Telfer-Wan
I have spent four years trying to figure out who I would like to become, and it is only recently that I realize I want to become the person I’ve always been: a dancer, an artist, someone who helps others and strives for success. Graduation year has had me saying goodbye to the things I love. I’ve realized I want to dance and learn about human movement and behavior. Looking forward to university, I’ve decided to apply to a minor in Contemporary Dance and a minor in either Kinesiology, Communications or Anthropology.

Sixteen new seats for VIU The government of B.C. says it is investing $216,000 to create 96 seats at three public post-secondary institutions on Vancouver Island so students can get hands-on experience in a variety of trade occupations that support the diverse, strong and growing economy of B.C.  Camosun College is receiving $153,000 in funding for 68 seats, North Island College will collect $27,000 for 12 seats, and Vancouver Island University will get $36,000 for 16 seats. This allocation is part of $727,500 to create 326 Trades Discovery seats at 12 public colleges, universities and institutes. The funds support B.C.’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint that the government launched one year ago.  “Are you interested in learning about a trade, but can’t decide which one or even if it’s for you? Learn from mushroom lady The workshops are geared for beginners who want to grow mushrooms at low expense
Last weekend, Jessica Wolf spread the joy of growing mushrooms during two sold-out workshops in Errington. Three more workshops are offered this coming week for those who don’t want to miss out on the fun. This half-day workshop is geared for beginners who want to grow delicious mushrooms without fancy or expensive equipment. After laying a little ground work about mush-
room ecology, habitat and life cycles, Wolf will demonstrate easy techniques for propagating a variety of edible and medicinal mushrooms. Participants will also build their own shiitake logs and oyster mushroom kits to take home. The afternoon workshop is offered May 8, 9 or 10 in Errington near Parksville. The cost is $70 per person. Shiitake and oyster mushroom logs and grow kits are also available to purchase. For more information and to register for the workshop visit www.jessicawolf.ca . — Submitted by Jessica Wolf

Its car-like ride keeps the driver from feeling fatigued. Verdict One of the advantages of Fiat taking over Chrysler is the broader range of products they can introduce into the North American market. The team in Michigan took the award winning Doblo from Fiat and modified it to meet our needs. Things like the springs and shocks being stiffer and raising the ride height to help when driving over our rougher roads. The larger engine, running on gasoline will appeal to a wider audience than diesel but some buyers will wish that a diesel option were available here. At first glance, this Promaster City is something new, from a brand that has a lot of experience building smaller vans for urban environments. If you are in the trades and don’t need a full-size vehicle, this type of van is up to the job. The Lowdown Power: 2.4L 178hp 4-cylinder Fill-up: N/A Write to zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Safety Tip: Every day there are situations where you need to yield to another vehicle, motorcyclist, pedestrian or cyclist. Failing to yield may seem harmless but it’s a high-risk driving behaviour that leads to crashes. When turning left, don’t let pedestrians be your blind spot.

Cracking the curber code…
Five least sexy convertibles By Leon Rochocco, Jr.
“Sex Sells” has long been a popular tenet in advertising. And sex appeal has typically made it easier to sell cars. The movie industry has always favoured convertibles for their leading men and women, whether Carey Grant, Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, Kevin Costner or Susan Sarandon. Virtually any car becomes sexy when you chop the top, but I did say virtually. These five cars resist the glamour and glitz that often come with convertibles. 1985-1987 AMC Alliance Convertible: Built in the United States using a 1.7-litre engine and transmission from Renault, the Alliance was very much French in feeling. It was small, mundane in appearance and less than competitive against the best from Volkswagen, Toyota and Honda. It wasn’t cool with a roof and it didn’t get cooler without one. A good measure of its appeal then is its collectability and desirability now, which is nil. 1989 Yugo Cabriolet: The formula for the Yugo was simple and it was laughable. Buy a 20-yearold-design of a highly rust-prone Italian economy car, barely update it and ship it to America by the thousands. At first, people will buy a product that is vastly cheaper than the competition, but once the public finds out that it is slow, unattractive, outdated, uncomfortable and minimally reliable, the charm leaves in a hurry. Did a convertible version help the image and dramatically boost the sales? Again, the answer was, “Not really,” a response that was reinforced by a price that was double the cost of the GV Plus hatchback, which had gained fuel injection and six horsepower.
THE

When Walt says, “It’s got very low miles...”
1960-1963 Studebaker Lark VI Convertible: Solid, sensible and reliable all summed up Studebaker’s Lark. It was a good car without flash or panache, which had limited appeal to car-mad teens. There’s no question that lowering the top on the Lark made for a pleasant experience, but it didn’t change the status of this car from dud to stud when it came to sex appeal. 1908-1927 Model T Ford: Ford’s Tin Lizzie has always been rugged, reliable and in a class of its own. But sexy? Not likely. The roadster or touring car versions may be fun, simply because fun goes with open-air motoring like peanut butter goes with jelly. Sex appeal, though, simply isn’t part of the equation with this American icon, though the story would be very different if we were talking about a 1940 Ford Convertible Coupe. 1961-1963 Rambler American: The Rambler had to be one of the most sensible cars built in North America: properly engineered to conservative standards, with incredibly reliable straight-six engines and pricing within reach of middle class budgets. For 1961, the line offered a convertible and it was a lot like its sibling—responsible, sturdy and dull. In appearance and performance, the new drop-top was essentially an open-air version of an orthopedic shoe. You know, the kind of show that Marilyn Monroe or Angelina Jolie would avoid like the plague. Even spraying pheromones on this car wouldn’t give it an ounce of sex appeal. A garden tour for mother So what do you get mother for that special day? Lots of sons and daughters, even mothers and grandmothers in this area know the answer. For the past 24 years the Garden Tour presented by the Mount Arrowsmith Rhododendron Society (MARS) has been “the gift.” This year on the weekend of May 9 and 10 there are 12 beautiful gardens in Qualicum Beach and San Pareil on the tour. The gardens were chosen last fall by a small committee. As chairman Kathy Loyer explained,
they range from small plant-packed properties to larger mature gardens and include a bonsai display by Bob McGrath and the work of potter Larry Aguilar and landscaper Ron Schuler. Tickets for the event are $15 and are available at local nurseries, Mulberry Bush Bookstores and Milner Gardens. A self-drive map is included with the ticket. The tour is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. For more information, call 250-752-3694. — Submitted by MARS

Qualicum actor produces indy film
Dark film has social message Jessica skelton reporter@pqbnews.com
Dean Wray’s film career may span over two decades, but he recently celebrated another first. Last month, the long-time Qualicum Beach resident and his colleagues were in Vancouver for the theatrical release of his first film Down Here. “I’m pretty proud of it,” said Wray, who was the star, co-writer and first-time executive producer of the film. “It’s been something I’ve been building toward.” Down Here is a feature-length film set on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside that tells the story of an alcoholic detective who struggles with inner demons while searching to find a murderer targeting street workers.
However, as the detective’s life continues to unravel, and the lines between his professional life and addiction start to blur, he finds solace—and the opportunity for redemption— within the fragile community he is trying to protect. Blending elements of a crime thriller and a contemporary social drama, Wray described Down Here as having documentary-like realism and grit with a social message.
It’s pretty raw ... but we don’t overplay that. Dean Wray
“It’s pretty raw … but we don’t overplay that,” he said. Yet despite the weight of the film, Down Here was shot in only 13 days. “I got a champagne movie on a beer budget,” said the executive producer. Wray placed a lot of praise
on the Down Here team for this feat. Some of the main creative players for the film included director, writer, producer and supporting actor Teach Grant; fellow executive producer and Wray’s sister Shawna Wray; and producer Crystal Braunwarth. According to a news release for the film, the cast was mostly filled with people Wray and Grant had worked with over the years. “We’ve both carved out a pretty long path over the years in front of the camera and so each of us had a bank of tremendous talent to pull from,” said Grant in the release. They also made a successful cold-call to actress Tantoo Cardinal, who is a Member of the Order of Canada for her contributions to the growth and development of Aboriginal performing arts. Another major presence in the film was the Downtown Eastside itself. See Premiere, page a37

Tiki Westnedge’s current show features the colourful buildings on Shack Island, a small rocky outcrop that sits in between Piper’s Lagoon and Neck Point in Nanaimo. Though the painter now lives in Qualicum Beach, Westnedge was born in Nanaimo and first swam to nearby Shack Island with her father at age 9.
Tiki Westnedge’s current show gives viewers a peak into her personal history. The paintings, now hanging in the Gallery at Qualicum Art Supply, predominately feature Shack Island, a small rocky outcrop that sits in between Piper’s Lagoon and Neck Point in Nanaimo. “It’s my favourite subject to paint,” she said. “The shacks have character.” Though she now lives in Qualicum Beach, Westnedge was born in Nanaimo and spent her summers in a cabin on Hammond Bay. She first swam to nearby Shack Island with her father at age 9. As the name suggests, the island is
home to a collection of small colourful shacks. And while the land itself is owned by the Crown, these structures are not public. Instead, according to a 2007 article in The Nanaimo Daily News, they are owned by the families of the original builders and are kept as summer cabins. In some cases, the shacks have been passed down for as long as five generations. While Westnedge’s family doesn’t own one of the buildings, the island has been a steady fixture in her life. To this day, she still swims out to the rocky bluffs a few times each year to visit and take reference pictures with a waterproof camera. Sometimes, at low tide, she’ll walk to the island from Piper’s Lagoon with a sketchbook. “Most people don’t mind,” she said. See ArtiSt, page a37

Animal rescue turned kids’ story True tale offers lessons in living compassionately Jessica skelton reporter@pqbnews.com
Gillian Meghan Walters can finally add the title “author” to her resume. The registered clinical counsellor just wrote and illustrated her first children’s book, King Zoom and the Great Seal Pup Rescue, after she and her son had a chance encounter with an orphaned harbour seal pup in Nanoose Bay last year. “I have written many stories, but it was this particular experience that motivated me enough to publish,” she said in a news release. “I had been swimming at the same location for 40 years and this was the first time I had observed a lone seal pup.” The 50-page book, which Walters said is at the six-to10-year-old reading level, tells the true story of what happened during that encounter. “It was exciting and scary because you don’t know what to do,” she said in an interview with The NEWS. While King Zoom is Walter’s first published book, this isn’t her first stab at the arts. Writing and painting throughout childhood, Walter began her bachelor of arts degree with a focus on photography and painting at Vancouver Island University in 1992. During this time, she won two juried photography awards. Eventually, however, she changed her focus and graduated with a Masters of arts degree in counselling psychology from Seattle City
University in 2007. “It seemed like more of a career goal,” she said of the switch. “I’ve always wanted to help people.” Walters started to write and tell stories in earnest again when her son came along 11 years ago. One of the things she really wanted to accomplish was for her child, who is Jamaican Canadian, to see his cultural identity reflected in the material. “I just didn’t see much of it (dark-skinned characters in children’s books),” she said. In order to share her book with others, Walters turned to the self-publishing world. She attended a conference on the practice in Nanaimo, where she learned the steps she needed to take and made connections with a Victoria-based editor and graphic designer that eventually helped her put everything together. “Things just kind of happened,” Walters said, expressing she felt that going to the conference and getting family support “aligned” at just the right time. “I just got really into it,” she said. At the moment, Walters is tackling the marketing side of things. Her first stop was at the Nanoose Studio Tour Showcase last weekend. Walters also plans to contact bookstores for a tour up and down the Island this summer. Alongside all of this, the newly minted author is working on more King Zoom books, all of which are based on true stories. “I have a few books under my belt,” she said. While Walters is now

Gillian M. Walters holds her first published children’s book, King Zoom and the Great Seal Pup Rescue, which is based on the chance encounter she and her son had with an orphaned harbour seal pup in Nanoose last year.
mainly focusing on writing stories and painting, her counselling career hasn’t entirely fallen to the wayside. She continues to run creative movement expressive arts therapy groups for women and children with developmental issues. Her training in counselling psychology is filtering into her writing. Walters said her upcoming books will include themes of what it’s like to live with Tourette syndrome, ADHD and other behavioural issues, as well as how it feels to be different. As for King Zoom and the Great Seal Pup Rescue, Walters said her first book has a focus on mindfulness and
compassion. “The adventure became an education in compassion,” she said in a press release. “It helped solidify our family’s philosophy of living mindfully and compassionately.” To learn more about Walters and her books, visit her website gillianmeghanwalters.com. A portion of the proceeds made on King Zoom and the Great Seal Pup Rescue will be donated to the Island Wildlife Natural Care Centre on Salt Spring Island, which played an integral part to the seal pup story. MARKET ENTERTAINMEMNT: Local talents Fahlon, left, and Ramiah Smith provided some musical entertainment for the crowds at this year’s inaugural Errington Farmers’ Market on May 2. The market runs every Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. until the end of September.
Premiere turned into charity fundraiser continued frOm PAgE A33
“The cinematography is just beautiful,” said Wray. “The locations were an important landscape for us to get right,” said Braunwrath in the aforementioned release Braunwrath said it took about a month to scout out the Downtown areas alone. “(We) really tried to dig in to the nooks and crannies that are seldom seen by even long time Vancouverites,” she said. “It was a real joy to get acquainted with this part of the city.” Yet despite all this hard work, Wray said he was surprised at how hard it was to bring the film to a larger audience. As an indy film, Down Here had to first make its
rounds at film festivals. It was an official selection for the 2013 Whistler Film Festival and even earned an award of excellence at the Canada Film Festival in 2014. Only recently, however, did Canada’s Capital Motion Picture Group and the US’s Devolver Digital pick up the national and international distribution rights to the film. It was at that point when Wray and the rest of the Down Here team finally got to have their big premiere at the Rio in Vancouver, an event that they turned into a fundraiser for the street youth charity Covenant House. If you’d like to see Down Home, it is available digitally through iTunes, Vimeo and Google Play. You can also contact Capital Motion Picture Group for a DVD copy.
Artist not yet tired of Shack Island subject continued frOm PAgE A33
The painter said she is drawn to the fact the buildings are colourful and not architecturally perfect. She also said she hopes to give people a different view of the shacks through her work so the island is “not taken for granted.” To bring the location to life on canvas, Westnedge said she prefers to use acrylic paints and “lively” brushstrokes. “I can get the vibrant colours and the texture on the weathered buildings,” she explained.
This style of painting also helped her earn her associate membership in the Federation of Canadian Artists this February. In fact, some of the images she used in her accreditation show are hanging in QAS. “It’s encouraging and validating,” she said of attaining the signature membership. “It requires dedication and perseverance.” Westnedge has painted since childhood, spending her spare time creating and attending workshops after she attained a degree in art education from UBC, a Masters’
degree in counselling and a career as a school teacher. The painter, who is a member of the Arrowsmith chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists, also said she eventually plans to go for her senior FCA membership and there is a “good chance” she’ll use more images of her beloved Shack Island for that next step. “I’m not tired of it yet,” she said of the subject. The Gallery is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

Former locals to World Series Kevin Biro of Deep Bay and Mackenzie Parlow of Qualicum now play for the UBC Thunderbirds T yson Taylor
sports@pqbnews.com
Kevin Biro and Mackenzie Parlow, both playing for the UBC Thunderbirds, are heading to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) World Series after capturing the NAIA Western Championship last week. Biro, from Deep Bay, and Parlow, from Qualicum Beach, are both former members of the Quality Foods Parksville Royals and have both come through Oceanside Minor Baseball as well. For most of this season, Parlow, in his second season at UBC, was out with a herniated disc in his back and was used as a pinch-hitter through the playoffs, sparking a rally in game one against Menlo that the T-Birds went on to win by a score of 5-3. Biro, who is primarily a third baseman, has been playing shortstop in the playoffs for the T-Birds. Both Biro and Parlow were members of a 2006 Oceanside Pee Wee team that finished second at the Provincials and now both are part of a winning team together once again. The T-Birds will now head to the opening round of the NAIA World Series, which takes place May 12-15 at a location that has yet to be decided. From there, the NAIA World Series itself will take place May 22-29 in Lewiston, Idaho.

Ballenas Whalers capture third straight victory Local team will be the number one team from the North in the Island Championships in Comox starting Monday T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
For the third straight year in a row, the Ballenas Whalers senior girls soccer team has captured the North Island Championship and are heading to the Island tournament in Comox next week. It was a clean sheet right across the board for the Whalers as they managed to win all four of their games without conceding a single goal from all four opponents. This bumps their streak to six games without allowing a goal now. In the finals, the Whalers took on the Brooks Bobcats (Powell River) in a tight game that needed penalty kicks to crown a winner. In the end, the Whalers came away with the victory, giving them three straight North Island

titles. The Whalers girls will be the number one seed from the North, as they will play out the Island Championships at Mark Isfeld Secondary School in Comox, which starts Monday, May 11. “It was a great tournament for us,” head coach Larry Stefanek said. “Our team played solid from the back end and our attacking game was right where it needed to be. It speaks volumes about the defense and goalkeeping of this team, not having given up a goal in their last six games, it’s incredible.” That defense coach Stefanek speaks of has been playing well their last six games, without a goal from opponents in all six contests.
Goalkeeper Olivia Collins has been the last line of defense for the Whalers in goal, stopping all shots coming her way. Defenders Bronwyn Kirk, Olivian Friesen, Kate Reynolds, Heavenly Brock and Kyla Squire have all done their part as well, making sure that Collins can find the ball on it’s way through, whenever it does. “The defense has been solid,” Stefanek said. “We’ve been playing a great team game through these last six and we’re hoping that we’ll be able to continue it from this point forward at the Islands.” On their way through to capturing the North Island title, the Whalers beat out the Kwalikum Kondors (5-0), Brentwood (4-0), Mark Isfeld (1-0) and then Brooks in the final on penalty kicks.

Robertson leads the way with three goals continued from page a42
It was a balanced scoring attack for the Whalers, as Emily Robertson led the way with three goals in game one, along with Sophie Palmer and Chloe Pezel adding a goal each against the Kondors. Robertson continued to find the back of the net; scoring two against Brentwood, Palmer
added another goal and Claudia Ritzker rounded out the scoring. Megan McCrae scored the lone goal for the Whalers in their third game against Mark Isfeld. The Whalers now have a chance to make Provincials, with three berths from
the Island tournament up for grabs. Having won six straight games, without giving up a single goal in all six games, the Whalers chances are good but they know there is still a lot of work to be done to make it there. “We’re in a good spot but it’s going to
be tough,” Stefanek said. “We’re a talented team up front with Emily and Sophie and our defense has been great for us, not giving up many chances. We’re close but our goal is to make Provincials, so that’s what we’re looking for.”

Royals fine-tune game Parksville players use their spare time wisely this week T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
With just the one game on tap this week, the Quality Foods Parksville Royals are using their spare time to get in some good practices and fine-tune some of the smaller aspects of their team game ahead of a busy month of June. The Royals were in Nanaimo last night, taking on the Nanaimo Pirates (score not available at press time) in their only game this week. With the rare weekend off, the Royals have been making good use of their practice time to prepare for the busy schedule that awaits them. “It’s nice to have this time off right now,” head coach Dave Wallace said. “It gives us a chance to charge up the batteries, we’ve got a few pitchers with some minor injuries that will allow them to heal up. It’s a good thing to have some down time, especially for these kids, because it’s going to be busy for the rest of the season.” Winners of two of their first 10 games this season, the Royals have had chances to win games early on but haven’t been able to capitalize on bringing runs around when needed. Hitting has been one of the weaker points in the Royals game at the early point this season but coach Wallace knows it will turn around in due time. “Our last game was a good indicator of it coming around,” Wallace said. “We were looking to be much more aggressive at the plate against White Rock and we showed that we were more than capable of doing so. ting hasn’t been as strong as it could be so we’re spending a good deal of time in these practices to get some swings in, really break down each hitter and looking to improve each at bat going forward.” Wallace has liked what he’s seen from his team so far, with the team defense making it tough on opposing teams to move up on the base paths by stealing bases, it’s made life easier on the pitching staff to not have to worry all that much about runners making a break for it. Along with a solid defense, being able to limit the mental mistakes on defense will also go a long way for the Royals in giving them an even better shot at winning ball games. “We know what our pitching is like,” Wallace said. “They give us a good shot at winning the game, it’s the rest of the game that needs to be that way. Our defense has been good but there’s always room for improvement. If we can eliminate the mental errors that we make in the field then that will go a long way in helping us win some ballgames and give us a lot more confidence as a team.” Taking advantage of the situations their given in games is a huge factor, not just for the Royals but all teams in baseball, and it’s something that Wallace sees will come with repetition. “This practice time gives us a good chance to develop good habits,” Wallace said. “Working on all situations, hitting, running, fielding, it’s all going to come with getting lots of reps in. Those reps will build the habits that we need to have to win games.”
