Heading into it’s 23rd year, the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival long ago established itself as one of the summer destination spots for fans and lovers of music ranging from Blues to Bluegrass, Celtic to Cuban and Americana to Afrobeat. From humble beginnings of stand alone folk shows in Salmon Arm community halls, Roots and Blues grew into a major western Canadian outdoor event that has played host to patrons from all over western Canada and the Pacific North West. The festival has also hosted legends like Buddy Guy, Bruce Cockburn, Ian Tyson, Buffy Sainte- Marie, Mavis Staples,Arlo Guthrie and Taj Mahal who have wowed Roots and Blues audiences, as have artists who were on the cusp of becoming internationally acclaimed talents. Feist and Serena Ryder sit at the top of that list. Produced in the picturesque setting of Shuswap Lake, Roots and Blues is a three-day event that takes place on the third weekend of every August. It offers audiences multiple stages and diverse choices of musical styles that can either stand alone or be blended into spontaneous collaborative mash-ups that are as inspired as they are unique. Daytime workshops are renowned for delivering high voltage performances with artists who were introduced backstage before becoming fast friends on Roots and Blues stages. The palpable enthusiasm and good time vibe of the performers becomes contagious not long after the festival gates open. Produced by the not-for-profit Salmon Arm Folk Music Society, Roots and Blues has also been applauded for continuing to help inspire emerging artists from the region as well as presenting some of the province’s most respected musical ambassadors such as Colin James, Kiran Ahluwalia, and Jim Byrnes. As recently as 2014, musicians from Salmon Arm and area found themselves sharing their songs and talents on workshop stages
with established artists from across the country. While being mentored by these artists our homegrown musicians also confirmed to audiences and their peers that given the chance they can hold their own with some of the best in the creative world. Outreach has been an important component in the Roots and Blues and Salmon Arm Folk Music Society mandate since it’s inception. Outreach has come in many forms including the Routes and Blues concert series that landed in many smaller communities within a stone’s throw from Salmon Arm, and the annual Music Crawl that is produced the night prior to the festival. The Music Crawl showcases local and touring artists in smaller venues with a “pay what you can” admission fee, allowing everyone in the community access to fine talent. Past and present artistic directors of the festival have made their knowledge of, and insights about the world of music readily available to local and regional artists via one on one and group sessions. Roots and Blues is also in the process of providing new ways of working with audiences and artists in the greater Salmon Arm area. At the end of the day much of the focus remains on the three day festival that ties incredible music into a shimmering tapestry that includes culinary delights from an international food village, a dance stage, a fun zone for children, an artisan market place featuring handcrafted Canadian made originals, and a tranquil camping site within earshot of the festival. Twenty-three years and counting, not only the years, but also the ever expanding list of fans, volunteers, and friends of the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival.

Discover the museum and the story of the “Granite Creek Fish Hatchery”. The exhibit tells the story of D.S. (Scotty) Mitchell, Director of the Granite Creek Fish Hatchery, and salmon stock depletion along the Fraser River and its tributaries. Scotty Mitchell was an environmentalist ahead of his time. When the Dominion Government fish hatchery was established at Tappen in 1901, Mitchell was appointed as its first and only superintendent, continuing in that capacity until the hatchery was abandoned in 1916.

This exhibit illustrates the lifecycle of the salmon, how salmon eggs are harvested, fertilized, incubated, and released, and Mitchell’s concerns for our future. Partners include Kingfisher Interpretive Centre and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Trains stopped. People disembarked; others bought tickets from the station master. Raw milk, fruit, and other goods were loaded as mail and commercial goods were dropped off. Time forWine 25 LARCH HILLS WINERY
Larch Hills Winery is a land-based, family run vineyard and winery, owned by Jack and Hazel Manser. All our product is proudly made from 100% British Columbia grapes, either from our main vineyard just south of Salmon Arm (also the location of the winery and our home), or from contracted vineyards farther south in the Okanagan Valley. All our wines are made and bottled on our premises in Salmon Arm. In 1992, after experimenting to find the right types of grape for our climate, we began planting in earnest. We now grow Ortega, Madeleine Angevine, Madeleine Sylvaner and Siegerrebe are our whites, and Agria is our red. Lemberger, Gewurztraminer, Foch, and Merlot are sourced from our contract vineyards. We opened our winery in April 1997 with a small release of what has become a signature wine for us -- Ortega (vintage 1995). Since then, our vineyards have developed to full production, and we have been able to add many other varieties to our list of releases.
OVINO WINERY
Ovino Winery is a small family run operation. The vineyard is perched on a sandy loam bench overlooking the salmon valley where sun exposure and air movement support healthy and flavorful grapes that can be grown in a sustainable way. At Ovino we strive to get optimum flavors and varital character in our grapes. Our efforts are directed at quality over quantity and to keep our wines affordable. Some of the wines we offer are: Black Riesling, Foch and our best selling Momento for reds, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and our popular blend Pinot Tramino as white wines. In addition we have a refreshing rose’ and a delightfully sweeter wine named Entice. Our wines are available at Piccadilly, Setters and Salmon Arm Liquor Store as well as Scotch Creek Super Valu, Sorrento Lighthouse and Silver Creek Store. Or you can enjoy our wines when dining at Table 24, AnDiamo or Shuswap Chefs restaurants.

SUNNYBRAE VINEYARDS & WINERY
The large framed photograph in the tasting room of Sunnybrae Vineyards & Winery–a picture of a muscular farmer with his team of Belgian draft horses–immediately conveys a sense of heritage. It is a picture of the late Mac Turner, the father of Barry Turner who, with his wife, Nancy, and their family, offer a stunning view of Shuswap Lake. A stylized image of Mac Turner and his team appears on the labels of all Sunnybrae wines. “Sunnybrae” is aptly named and boasts its own unique micro-climate, perfect for growing grapes. The meticulously-groomed vineyard is nestled below Bastion Mountain next to the magnificent Shuswap Lake shoreline. The south-sloping volcanic ash land basks in sunshine during daylight hours and enjoys cooling breezes in the evenings. The staff at Sunnybrae Winery look forward to helping you with wine choices and food pairing information. Come to the sunny side and enjoy a casual fun-filled experience.
RECLINE RIDGE
Specializing in rare, cool-climate varietals, Recline Ridge offers something to tempt every palate: off-dry whites, reds, a rose, and dessert wines. The whites are very fruit-forward and aromatic, and are great paired with a variety of food, as well as being wonderful patio wines. Reds and the rose wines include locally-grown varietals, with their full-bodied characteristics and also offer opportunities to pair with foods of all types. Dessert wines complete the lineup with awesome flavours. Come and see us at our beautiful site, and drink in the views from our licensed picnic area and patio. We offer a variety of specialty crackers and local cheeses and you may bring your lunch as well. Our unique postand-beam custom log building has many Asian-influenced design elements and offers a great atmosphere for our tastings. Our wines have won a variety of awards from competitions in the U.S. and Canada, including a total of 23 in 2014, and are showcased in our presentation. We hope to see you soon.
