Ridge Meadows Home Show ‘keeping it fresh’ It’s all systems go for the Ridge Meadows Home Show, set for May 1st through May 3rd at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge. “The show is sold out as signs are going up in the arena in preparation for the event, as well as more than 250 volunteers confirmed,” said Cassandre Winder, project coordinator for the Ridge Meadows Home Show. “Student leaders are cranked, entertainment is in place, everything is under control,” she added. “Except for Mother Nature. She’s the only potential fly in the ointment, and pretty much, you have to accept what you get from her.” Last year the event had 86 millimetres of rain on the Sunday. The home show, of course, was packed and, surprisingly enough, had traffic at the outdoor events. Winder said the rain did little to dampen the enthusiasm for the event. In the 20 years the home show has featured outdoor events, it’s mostly had great weather. This year’s show has around 100 new exhibitors and the total number of booths on site will again hover around 400. “The show attracts an estimated 20,000 visitors,” said Winder. “If you don’t have solid attendance, you don’t sell display space. We work very hard at keeping the show fresh, attracting new faces to our exhibitor line-up and adding new attractions to the outdoor events.” Surveys last year told home show organizers that close to 10 per cent of the customers were planning a major bathroom renovation. The home show responded by booking notable bath experts such as Splashes, Emco and Fibretech, as well as several vanity manufacturers. Other featured exhibitors include those for kitchens, flooring and blinds. The home show limits the number of exhibitors in each category to avoid saturation. Outdoors, the home show will host Brian Misko, a world champion on the competition BBQ circuit. He’ll be sizzling his way through six shows in his BBQ school, an event designed to teach visitors how to become grill masters. It’s also a sampling event, something worth
hanging around for, Winder said. “Just follow the delicious aromas in the air to find this event.” In addition to Maple Ridge’s Warm Hearth, Bishop’s Outdoor Living Centre will feature BBQs, as well as outdoor kitchens, hot tubs, gazebos, fire pits and outdoor furnishings in its 3,000-square-foot display. Morgan Jensen will also be on hand with deck-building advice and a fullsized deck cutaway to show structure and fasteners. The For the Love of Dogs event will return, with dog experts, products, training and demonstrations, as well as a Meet the Breeds show. Another returning event is the Action Sport Extreme Stunt Show, featuring professional BMX and MTB riders, most of them world-ranked. Local riders organize this event, which last year drew a couple of the Red Bull riders. Likewise, the Yamaha Mini Moto event, produced by GA Checkpoint, will also be back, giving youngsters the opportunity to whiz around the track on a miniature motorcycle, after training with an instructor. (All equipment is provided.) Expect lineups however at this well attended area. There will also be boats, ATVs, camping gear, paintball – “all the gear that guys love” – in the outdoor segment of the show. In Family Fest, the show is celebrating its 20th year as a home show partner, and an awesome line-up of events awaits. New this year, Haney Builders’ Supplies “Lets Build” will offer families the opportunity to get together and build, then take home, a birdhouse. The local food bank is getting into the giving spirit, thanks to the generosity of sponsors. As food banks Canadawide are launching the Every Plate Full campaign, Friends in Need Food Bank will be promoting its local theme of
“Grow a Little Extra for the Food Bank” and inviting visitors to learn about local operations. An event themed “especially for seniors” is also planned for Family Fest. The musical comedy act, Bernie and Red will appear Saturday with McDonald’s Restaurants serving the seniors coffee or tea and cookies. “We just wanted to invite seniors to be a part of our event. We are providing transportation courtesy of event partner Sunwood Retirement Community,” Winder said. Sign-up at the Maple Ridge Seniors Centre is required. “I think the seniors are going to like the show almost as much as the kids,” Winder added. “They’ll probably enjoy meeting the various breeds of dogs, maybe look in at the petting zoo. It should be fun. There’s no shortage of things to do and see. We have pretty much non-stop entertainment, impressive dog demonstrations, to say nothing of the dog royalty in the dog show, make and take crafts, a world-ranked kite flyer, martial arts, a huge carnival, even a psychic fair.” Winder is not surprised by the overwhelming number of vendors and visitors the home show attracts. “Even though we’re out of space, the phone is still ringing and we’re starting to book for 2016,” she added. “Credit for that, of course, goes to the home show team. From office staff to shuttle drivers to the parking team, everyone gives their all.”

he tap, tap, tap of hammers will echo throughout Maple Ridge Fairgrounds May 1-3 as birdhouse building takes centre stage at the Haney Builders’ Supplies Let’s Build segment at Ridge Meadows Home Show. Part of the home show’s Family Festival 20th anniversary celebrations, birdhouse building was one of the original features of the event when it debuted in 1995. “We all loved this event, but it was complex and took a lot of staff. Long time Family Fest sponsor, Haney Builders’ Supplies, offered to donate the lumber. The students from the carpentry class at Pitt Meadows Secondary School took on the daunting task of pre-cutting all the wood,” project coordinator Cass Winder said. The result is 230 birdhouses, ready to assemble on site and take home. (Branded with the Haney Builders’ name, of course). “Its a great family project, doesn’t cost a thing and in the end, we’ll have created 230 cosy little homes for our feathered friends,” Winder said. Alex Yakovyshenko, Haney Builders general manager, said it’s “hard to say no” to the home show. “We’ve been participating in the home show for the past 20 years and find it to be an excellent vehicle for showcasing new products, getting factory reps out to answer questions and allowing us to connect with customers---old and new. “We’ve been around since 1938 and we’re family-owned so community has a lot of meaning for us. Yes, we’re the place where the contractors shop and yes, we’ve modernized, added a design centre and kept pace with what’s current---but our foundation is still one of old-fashioned values--- giving back to the people we serve. “Besides that, there’s something special about building a birdhouse, finding the perfect spot in the yard, waiting endlessly for a family to move in and watching to see what happens. “Who wouldn’t want to be a part of all that?”

Grow a little extra for foodbank By: Saleena Fransen Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows News The Friends in Need Food Bank serves the community of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, and their goal is to make sure that no one in our community ever goes hungry. “Thousands of Canadians face hunger every year and food banks across the country are unable to keep up with the demand, especially in the summer months,” executive director Mary Robson said. “This year, we’re facing hunger head on. From May 2nd – 8th food banks across Canada are coming together to participate in the Every Plate Full food drive with an inspiring goal – to fill the plates of every hungry Canadian this summer.” As if they weren’t busy enough, Friends in Need Food Bank will be gifting 500 potted herb plants to several lucky Ridge Meadow Home Show attendees. The effort is part of a campaign to encourage local vegetable gardeners to “grow a little bit extra” for the food bank. Robson said her team is enthusiastic about participating in the show, and without sponsorship, it wouldn’t have been possible. “Visitors at our display in the outdoor show will be able to learn about the operations, our volunteers and how a
food hamper is created. They’ll also receive a Kitchen Pick© potted herb, courtesy of local growers, the Pelton family.” Each Kitchen Pick© living herb plant is a portable minigreenhouse. Designed to enhance your cooking and dining experience, these live herbs can be “picked” in your kitchen at the height of freshness. They are grown 365 days a year at a 10,000m herb growing facility in beautiful Maple Ridge. For the Love of Dogs By: Saleena Fransen Maple Ridge - Pitt Meadows News Last year’s For the Love of Dogs event sparked a great deal of interest. This year, the event has once again earned the top spot in the line-up for Family Fest at the Ridge Meadows Home Show, which will run from May 1st to 3rd. “When more than 500 visitors come out to see a dog show, you know there’s interest,” project coordinator Cassandre Winder said. “We were blown away by the response to both the dog show and the meet and greet. Both events have earned a repeat performance.” Winder explained that the canine events were originally created out of an urge to educate the general public about the importance of choosing a breed that best suits your lifestyle. “We have some of Canada’s top dogs in our dog show and this, for many visitors, will be the first time they’ve seen titled, championship dogs strutting their stuff. We chose to show Canadian Kennel Club registered dogs with show experi-
ence because they are well-versed in public situations and actually love being on display.” The Canadian Kennel Club’s meet and greet will take place on Saturday at noon, and again at 3:30. It will give visitors the opportunity to meet the dogs, their owners and their handlers. It will also focus on the importance of choosing a reputable breeder. As if that isn’t enough, three more doggy demonstrations will be taking place on all three days of the show. Teresa Zurberg will be bringing her nine-month-old English springer-spaniel puppy named Angus. Angus is the only dog in the world that is currently working to sniff out C. difficile, a deadly bacteria that can be found in hospitals. The bacteria often attacks individuals whose immune systems have been weakened by antibiotics. It’s an infectious disease that inflames the large intestine and can cause diarrhea, fever and sometimes death. Jamie Kinna and the expert team
from Good Dog Ranch and Spa will be bringing a wealth of experience in dog training. This team has been invited to participate with Cesar Milan’s live tour, and will also be on site throughout the weekend with obedience and agility demonstrations. The ARC Protection demo series will feature canine security patrol and protection dogs as well. Over the years they have found several potential trespassers hiding in bushes, vehicles, garbage cans, and fence lines at special events.
