In Quesnel

Farmers' Market Back in 1988, in the treed site where the Quesnel Seniors’ Centre now stands, a handful of young vendors offered a modest amount of produce and some crafts for one Saturday that year. Over the years, the Market was moved from a dusty parking lot to a paved one, and then to the Legion and now to its present location on the grassy field of Helen Dixon School. The Quesnel Farmers’ Market has grown into one of the most successful markets in all of B.C. The Quesnel Farmers’ Market provides consumers the ideal place to find the produce choices they are seeking. And the Market provides so much more. In addition to great selection of locally grown vegetables, fruits, poultry and other meats and honey, you’ll find fresh-baked bread, cookies, pies and other goodies, plus ready-to-eat foods. Interwoven among these vendors, you’ll discover handcrafted gifts and collectibles. And that’s not all. The Market is pleased to provide live music every Saturday. Also, about once a month, the Quesnel Farmers’ Market features a Special Event Day. The Quesnel Farmers’ Market is the place to bring out-of-town guests to capture the spirit of our community. The Market is open every Saturday from 8:30 am - 1 pm, at the Helen Dixon School site, starting May 2 and going right through mid-October. For further information, contact our market manager at 250.747.8543 or visit our website at www.quesnelmarket.com

Pinnacles Fascinating wind and water sculptured “hoodoo”

formations rise above Baker Creek in West Quesnel, forming the unique Pinnacles Park.

The geographical formations which make this day

park distinct were formed nearly 12 million years ago, when the melting ice age eroded the valley

in which Quesnel was built. During erosion, the ash layer of a molten lava flow was revealed and

the receding glacier carved the rock pinnacles which dot the park.

Walking trails and panoramic views of Quesnel

make this municipal park an ideal setting for afternoon excursions and family picnics. 128

hectors of pine, spruce, fir and birch welcome

visitors to spend peaceful afternoons exploring the park and its natural wonders.

Pinnacles Park can be accessed by travelling

In Quesnel HERITAGE Quesnel has been the hub of humankind since the First Nations people used this confluence of the two mighty rivers as their meeting place right through the exploration by Europeans beginning in 1808 first by Simon Fraser and subsequently by the flood of gold rush miners beginning in 1857. By 1865 the Cariboo Waggon Road reached Barkerville. Local farmers and ranchers supplied necessary food and supplies to these miners. With the addition of telegraph lines, the growth of the communities in the north including Quesnel and the arrival of the Pacific Great Easter Railway in 1921, kept Quesnel a bustling, busing northern terminus. Forestry has always been a key resource providing jobs and prosperity to the region. Quesnel became a city in 1979 and forestry remains a driving economic engine with agriculture, mining and tourism also playing significant roles in the development of the city.

18

Walking bridge The Old Fraser River Bridge, now reserved for pedestrians, is accessed from Heritage Corner,

an historic civic site which contains many local artifacts. The bridge was first constructed to allow cattle drives from west of Quesnel to be sold at the local stockyards then transported

by rail to the south. Located on Carson and Front Streets, the site also houses the remains

of the steamer Enterprise, the first riverboat to reach Quesnel, a Cornish water wheel, and a cairn commemorating the Overland Telegraph Line which reached Quesnel in 1865. Each of these artifacts highlights a way in which Quesnel was linked to the world.

Nearby is the Hudson’s Bay Store, which sold supplies to the area’s first miners and homesteaders. The log building, erected in 1867, has been restored and continues to serve

as a civic landmark. Cariboo Keepsakes, a showcase and retail outlet for local artisans, carries on an honoured tradition.

50 Years of rodeo Quesnel Amateur Rodeo is celebrating 50 years and they invite the public to share in the festivities. Who would have thought, 50 years ago, the Quesnel rodeo would grow to be the premier provincial event it is today.

When Harold Hartley met with 12 other cowboys at his home in 1965 to officially form the Quesnel Rodeo Association, he had no idea how important rodeo would be to Quesnel.

Starting at a small field across from Bouchie Lake school to eventually moving to Alex Fraser Park in 1971, the Quesnel Rodeo soon grew to be the largest amateur rodeo in British Columbia.

In 1966, top prize money ranged from $100 – $273. Today’s purse can be as much as $2,500/

event. From rough stock competition to barrel racing, pony chariot races to a greased pig race, the rodeo has brought competitors from Washington, B.C. and Alberta all testing their skills to become the best in the British Columbia rodeo circuit.

British Columbia Finals Rodeo September 11th, 12th & 13th - Alex Fraser Park, Quesnel 20

The local riders needed more experience in order to compete with the higher ranking cowboys coming

from out of town, so the Bouchie Lake arena was constructed from donated materials through several businesses in the Quesnel area. With the town approving and clearing the ground at Alex Fraser Park in 1972, the rodeo moved to its new home with a new arena and was included in B.C.’s largest family festival, Billy Barker Days. In 1978 new pens, a ticket booth, turnstiles and fencing on the track were built along with some general

repairs. 1983 brought completion of the rodeo office and the lower concession to provide a central location for competitors to register for the rodeo and also enjoy a cowboy breakfast. Throughout the years, the Quesnel Rodeo Club, as it is known today, has organized steer and bull-riding clinics to encourage the younger generation to participate in rodeo. Barn dances have also become a popular event, first held at the Bouchie Lake Hall, then at the Quesnel Arena and now at the Alex Fraser Park agriplex. In 2003 the club voted to host the British Columbia Rodeo Association Championship Rodeo Finals at Alex Fraser Park and have done this ever since. 2004 – 2006 the finals were held in the Quesnel arena but this monumental task of preparing a high quality dirt surface became too much and the club voted to return the event to Alex Fraser Park. This year’s 50th Anniversary preparations are underway to include an exciting half time show and grand entry. A lot has changed since 1965 but in the hearts of cowboys and cowgirls both in the arena and out, there’s nothing better than the rodeo.

BARKERVILLE One of Canada’s largest and most comprehensive historic towns, Barkerville, provides visitors

with a time warp experience as they step into the life and times of the Cariboo’s first European entrepreneurs and experience the 1860s. The town grew almost overnight when news of Billy Barker’s famous gold strike reached desperate gold seekers throughout the colony of British

Columbia and along the depleted gold fields of California. The cafes, stores, professionals and services which followed the miners to provide for their basic needs have been recreated, as well as a wealth of mining antiques and displays. The park is open for visitors to experience life in the late 19th century year round, however from early May until well into September,

exhibits and displays, impersonators of famous people, a period theater and the infamous court of the “Hanging Judge”, Matthew Begbie, are also available to the public.

Only an hour from Quesnel, along Highway 26, Barkerville is a worthwhile stop for tourists and amateur historians. For more information call 1.250.994.3302

COTTONWOOD HOUSE Located approximately 40 km east of Quesnel, Cottonwood House, pioneer settlement and farm was one of the many stopping houses which provided provisions and rest to pioneers

travelling the Cariboo Waggon Road, has been restored to its 1864 condition. The former road house still provides travellers a chance to stretch and re-fuel on the way to Barkerville.

Interpreters in period costumes give tours of the grounds, which includes an exhibit highlighting the history of the area. The main house, barns, sheds, animals, wagon rides and cabins as well as picnic grounds, continue to make Cottonwood house an excellent stop for photographic

opportunities. With a gift store, country kitchen, candy store and cabins available for rental, Cottonwood House still offers a respite for travellers.

Cottonwood House is operated by Barkerville Trust. There is a small gate fee.
