Young people are returning Report indicates 3,400 people ages 30-34 came back in ‘06-’11 CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
The kids are coming home. Despite the popular perception, youth retention might not be Parksville Qualicum Beach’s biggest problem. According to a 2014 Island Coastal Economic Trust (ICET) report the “region had a net loss of more than 7,000 people age 20 to 24 between 2006 and 2011 … But the trend reverses once people reach their 30s, with about 3,400 extra residents in the 30-34 age range moving into the region.” The ICET region includes Parksville Qualicum Beach, Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley, Comox Valley, Sunshine Coast, Mount Waddington and Alberni-Clayoquot communities. Data was collected using the Canadian Census. It’s welcome news for Parksville mayor Marc Lefebvre who called the findings “hopeful.” “I think why wouldn’t young people want to live here?” Lefebvre said. “We offer a great lifestyle here, I know I love it.” See GREAT PLACE TO GROW UP, page A6
Defending the fleet JOHN HARDING
editor@pqbnews.com
Conservative MP John Duncan says the Canadian Coast Guard was a “bucket of bolts” before his party won office in 2006. Duncan was responding to criticisms from the New Democratic Party and others after an oil spill in Vancouver last week. Duncan’s NDP opponent in this riding, Gord Johns, is urging the federal government to stop its planned closing of Marine Communications and Traffic Centres in Ucluelet and Comox as the NDP promises to reverse cuts to Canadian Coast Guard services across B.C. Duncan told The NEWS his government has pumped money into the coast guard since taking office. “When we came in in 2006 the coast guard fleet was a bucket of bolts,” said Duncan, who lives in Qualicum Beach. “We’ve basically refreshed most of the fleet.” See MOTION COMING, page A6

MARS Rhodo Show celebrates 25 years
For 25 years, residents of Parksville and Qualicum Beach have been drawn to the Rhodo Show and Sale mounted by the Mount Arrowsmith Rhododendron Society. This year’s show is at the Parksville Curling Rink this Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. when the club transforms the rink for a six-hour period. Local food stores lend shopping carts for the event and they are well used. Read more of this story at www.pqbnews.com
Coming Thursday: water plant answers How much is this going to cost? Are there grants available? What’s the DFO’s issue? What, exactly, is the ERWS and what is its role? It seems there are more questions than answers when it comes to a proposed multi-million-dollar water treatment and storage facility for Parksville and Nanoose Bay. The NEWS editor John Harding has asked the city — staff and/or politicians — 10 questions about the situation. See Thursday’s edition of The NEWS for the city’s answers.
Correction
A date in the Thursday, April 16 edition of The NEWS for a townhall-style meeting regarding the proposed Englishman River Water Service treatment plant was incorrect. Parksville city council’s motion called for a meeting to occur no later than May 31. A specific date has not been chosen yet. CANDACE WU PHOTO

A fire that destroyed a home along Reef Road in Nanoose Bay Tuesday night is the third in a string of “excessive” structure fires in the area in the last six months, according to Nanoose Bay Volunteer Fire Department fire chief Doug Penny. While nobody was injured in the fire, Penny called the insured home “a write off.” He said 17 firefighters responded to the incident at approximately 9 p.m. that night and it was put out within the first hour. “We’re leaning towards a roof fire,” Penny told The NEWS when asked about the cause of the fire. “I guess there were pieces of hot embers from the fireplace that fell onto the roof setting the roof on fire.” He said two occupants were inside the home at the time of the fire but escaped when they noticed a reflection from the fire. “(A woman) was looking outside and saw an orange reflection and didn’t know where it was coming from,” Penny explained. “Her husband realized the roof was on fire and called 911.” Penny said it was a challenging fire to tackle.

“Access is an issue when you have a burning roof,” he said. “It was difficult to get firefighters in safely.” Penny said this serves as a good reminder to keep your chimneys clean. Last week’s house fire sheds light on a particularly busy fire season in Nanoose Bay. “We’ve had a few people concerned,” admitted Penny. “In Beachcomber none of the fires have been suspicious in nature at all.” In his 29 years as fire chief, Penny said fire seasons vary without any rhyme or reason. “A few years ago we had five structure fires within a six month period, in fact two were only six days apart,” he recalls. “And then from 2005 to 2010 there were no excessive structures fires … it’s just weird.” A concerned Beachcomber resident emailed The NEWS asking if the high number of structure fires has anything to do with “new hydro meters installed in all of our homes” or an arson in the area. In response, Penny said “none of them are related to hydro meters at all and we’ve been able to put a cause to each fire…So they’re not suspicious and not (caused by) hydro meters.”

Learning how to have a healthy heart Half day, free session starts at 9 a.m. at Winchelsea Place
Oceanside Building Learning Together (OBLT), the nonprofit organization behind programs like Munchkinland, Mother Goose and the WOW bus, is providing an opportunity for people who have children in their lives through work, family or friends to explore how they can foster heart-mind well-being. “Educating the Heart” is a half day, free session open to the public Saturday morning, April 25 at Winchelsea Place in Compassion, confidence Parksville. and kindness are traits that actually help a child “As a socilearn more effectively ety, we put so much emphaMArtIN BINEt sis on children’s academic success that we may forget to pay attention to how a child moves through life with themselves and with other people,” said OBLT manager Judi Malcolm in a news release. “Compassion, confidence and kindness are traits that actually help a child learn more effectively.” These insights and the research that underlines the importance of paying attention to the heart as well as the mind will be shared with participants by Tracy Smyth from the Dalai Lama Centre for Peace and Education. The Dalai Lama Center and the UBC’s Human Early Learning Partnership’s work with heart-mind well-being has resulted in an evidence informed, deliberate approach to education that has a positive impact on communities, according to OBLT. This weekend’s workshop will explore the domains of heart-mind well-being, research that has demonstrated the positive impact of social and emotional learning and how we can create a balance between educating the mind and educating the heart. REStORAtIONS IN QuALICuM BEACh
‘Museums can’t be static’ CANdACE WU
news@pqbnews.com
The Qualicum Beach Museum is turning a new chapter in history. The iconic industrial building is now undergoing its first major renovation since its inception in 1994. “Museums can’t be static,” said museum manager Netanja Waddell. “They have to be active and change to stay current but also to stay interesting.” The renovations include opening up the main entrance, adding a gift shop section, new bathrooms, taking down a few interior walls and adding a set of glass doors etched by Bowser glass artist Paul Crawford depicting the importance of the local ecosystem with sea life, mountains and a dog salmon, which is where the name Qualicum
comes from. With the looming changes, Waddell said the museum has returned all their on-loan artifacts back to their owners, including antique school desks. So she’s calling out to the community for vintage, wooden school desks for their second-floor old school house exhibit. “If anybody has any old, wooden children’s school desks — especially if they are linked to the history of Qualicum — we’d love to use them,” said Waddell. Additionally, she said if anybody has artifacts or photography related to the history of Qualicum Beach they are interested in donating (or copying for photos) to the museum that would be greatly appreciated.
“We’re looking to tell the story of Qualicum Beach,” said Waddell. This initial set of renovations is the first in a multi-phase project that will depend on funding in the future, something staff and volunteers will be focused on for the next few years. “It’s exciting, I like change,” said Waddell. “It’s always good to open the door to the future.” Renovations are still underway but the Qualicum Beach Museum is hoping to open to the public in May. Check The NEWS for more updates. If you have any vintage school desks, artifacts or photography related to the history of Qualicum Beach that you are interested in sharing with the museum please contact Netanja Waddell at 250752-5533.

Motion coming to the House continued from page a1
Last week, B.C.’s 12 NDP MPs wrote a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper urging him to stop the closure of coast guard services in Comox, Ucluelet and Vancouver, and to re-open the Kitsilano Coast Guard base. The NDP also started an on-line petition campaign to increase public pressure on the federal government. “A federal NDP government would immediately restore these essential coast guard services, although it would be better for everybody if we didn’t have to wait until the next election for action,” said Johns. “That why we’re pressing the Harper government to learn from the Vancouver oil spill and reverse its cutbacks to marine safety.” “Last week’s oil spill in Vancouver Harbour showed how much damage could be done with a larger spill,” said Johns. “Instead of defending the response we saw in Vancouver, the Conservatives should start listening to British Columbians and restore coast guard services.” Duncan said the federal government has no plans to close currently operating coast guard facilities on the Island, including the ones in French Creek, Campbell River, Port Hardy and Bamfield. He also agreed with the premise that if there are going to be more oil tankers in the
waters around Vancouver Island there should be more, not less, services for responses to spills or other safety concerns. “We absolutely agree with that, but we don’t agree that government has to do everything,” said Duncan, pointing to conditions imposed by the Conservatives that proponents must meet related to spill response and other marine safety issues. On the weekend, the NDP released the wording of a related motion it says it will introduces in the House of Commons during the next opposition day. It reads: “That, in the opinion of the House, the recent toxic bunker fuel spill in Vancouver Harbour represents an urgent reminder of the fragility of our coastal waters and, therefore, the government must reverse its cuts to marine safety, oil spill response, and environmental clean-up capacity in Vancouver and elsewhere on the coast of British Columbia by: (a) re-opening the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station; (b) re-opening the recently-closed Ucluelet Marine Communication and Traffic Service Centre; and (c) halting plans to close the Vancouver and Comox Marine Communication and Traffic Service Centres.”

SUSPICIOUS E-MAILS
Residents warned about tax scam The Canada Revenue Agency will not get in touch with you by e-mail CandaCe Wu news@pqbnews.com
The grinch of tax season is back and Oceanside RCMP are warning residents to beware of fraudsters impersonating the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). At least five residents in Parksville Qualicum Beach have reportedly received suspicious e-mails from someone claiming to be with the CRA, according to Cpl. Jesse Foreman. The e-mail promises a tax refund and asks for personal information to complete a transaction.
Foreman said nobody has lost money on the scam, however, one person did give up personal information before calling police to report the incident which he realized was suspicious after the fact. “People just need to know the CRA will not get in touch with you via e-mail,” said Foreman. A news release issued by RCMP confirmed the CRA will not: request personal information of any kind from a taxpayer by e-mail, divulge taxpayer information to another person unless formal authorization is provided by the taxpayer or leave any personal information on an answering machine. When in doubt, police suggest asking yourself the following questions: am I expecting additional money from
the CRA? Does this sound too good to be true? Is the requester asking for information I would not include with my tax return? Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already has on file for me? How did the requester get my e-mail address? Am I confident I know who is asking for the information? The CRA will continue to post notifications of fraudulent activity as they become aware of them and they encourage you to check the CRA website should you have concerns. If you have responded to a fraudulent e-mail or phone call and have become a victim of fraud, please contact the RCMP’s Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by e-mail at info@antifraudcentre. ca or call 1-888-495-8501.

UBER PLYWOOD: Town of Qualicum Beach engineer and project lead for the new fire hall Bob Weir, left, spoke at a recent Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce dinner meeting at Giovanni’s Restaurant. One the the details Weir shared was about contraction materials for the new hall, including the piece of wood he and chamber vice-president Jim Lynch are holding above. Weir likes to call the product “uber plywood.” It’s laminated veneer lumber and is used for the main structural elements of the hall such as beams, ceiling panels and floor panels. It was a cost saving alternative proposed by the contractor. It supports the province’s ‘wood first’ initiative, is made in B.C., allows for rapid assembly, offers good thermal insulating values and serves as the final aesthetic finish.

Helping local hospice
Four local riders will join the Cycle of Life team of 50 AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
Oceanside Hospice Society is joining forces with other Vancouver Island hospices in the Cycle for Life Tour this summer. This year the local hospice society will focus on cycling, dropping the annual Hike for Hospice, which executive director Lynn Wood said was running out of steam. Four local riders will join the Cycle of Life team of 50, covering nearly 200 km over two days from Victoria to Salt Spring Island and back July 25-26. They are raising money and drawing attention to the need for hospice across the Island. They will pass through scenic areas up West Saanich and cross to the Cowichan Valley, loop around Salt Spring and down the Saanich Penninsula. Team Oceanside originally included two members of the “Craig Bay Chain Gang,” group of seniors who have cycled more than 300,000 km combined, but one may not make it due to injury and will be replaced. “As longstanding volunteers, these riders want to raise awareness that Oceanside Hospice ser-
vices are funded exclusively by donation, fundraising events, and grants, and are provided at no cost to the patients, their families and caregivers, as well as those grieving a loss,” Wood said. The team will include avid cyclists and hospice volunteers Stan Brown and Dick Carnegie, along with Christina White, riding in honour of her step mother who recently died with the support of hospice. “During the final months of Carol’s life, Oceanside Hospice was there, helping us keep Carol’s dignity and comfort as best we could,” White said. “This allowed her to stay at home with the love of her life, my dad. “I want to thank Oceanside Hospice for all they did and continue to do in support of people like my dad and Carol. The best way I can think of to thank them is to do the Cycle of Life tour with all of my donations going to them.” The tour was founded by Graham Robertson in 2011 when he cycled alone from Anchorage, Alaska to Victoria in honour of a colleague who died of cancer. It has since raised more than $115,000 for hospice. For more information and to sponsor a rider visit http://oceansidehospice.com/ and click on the Cycle of Life tab on the right. For more on hospice, to get involved or donate, e-mail lynn@oceansidehospice.com or call 250-752-6227.
tRaFFic Fine Funds
This region gets $368,000
Qualicum Beach, Parksville and the Nanaimo Regional District have received $368,000 in combined funding as part of almost $40 million being invested into communities across B.C. to meet local needs including more policing, new equipment, increased community safety initiatives, infrastructure and service delivery priorities, according to a news release from the provincial government. Qualicum Beach has received a $147,832 Small Community Grant along with $19,856 in traffic fine revenue. Parksville’s Small Community Grant is worth $120,167 while it has received $41,451 in traffic fine revenue. A Regional District Grant worth $38,896 has been
delivered to the Nanaimo Regional District. “Public safety is always top of mind for British Columbians, which is why our government provides traffic fine funds to municipalities like Parksville and Qualicum Beach, where they can be used for local community safety and policing,” said Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell. “This funding gives municipalities the flexibility to choose what local priorities they want to see funded.” Small Community Grants generally apply to municipalities with populations under 20,000 and are unconditional meaning that the local governments can spend the funding according to their needs and priorities. — NEWS Staff/Province of B.C.

Young playoffs
A
h, the exuberance of youth. In real life and the Stanley Cup playoffs, young people can inject energy into any situation. Yes, there are more important things going on in this province, this country, but millions are tuning into what’s become a nasty playoff series between the Vancouver Canucks and the Calgary Flames. The Flames have six players born in 1992 or later; the Canucks one. Some people believe experience matters in the playoffs, but at time of writing before a crucial game four of this seven-game series tonight with the Flames up 2-1, youth is winning the day. Canucks defenceman Kevin Bieksa, a 34-year-old from Grimsby, Ont., a veteran of many playoff battles, is being driven to near madness by Swan River, Manitoba’s Micheal Ferland, who celebrated his 23rd birthday yesterday. Bieksa is not alone, as Ferland and many of the young Flames are getting under the skin of Vancouver veterans, throwing them off their game and getting them to lose their collective cool. The youngest of them all on the ice, Sam Bennett, from Holland Landing, Ont. (one has to love this small-town-Canada stuff ), scored the winning goal Sunday night and was a handful for the Canucks the entire game. He won’t turn 19 until June. Then there’s the water bug that is Johnny Hockey, er, Johnny Gaudreau, from some place called Carney’s Point, New Jersey. Generously listed at 5’-9” and 150 pounds, the 21-year-old is getting better each game. The Canucks’ only 1992-or-earlier-born player is Bo Horvat, a 20-year-old from not-so-small London, Ont. He has been one of the more effective Canucks in this series, keeping with the theme that youth, at least three games in, is trumping experience. The Canucks were a great story this year. Only one season removed from a tumultuous, drama-filled, no-playoffs season under manic coach John Tortorella, the team returned to the post-season after some magic, quick-turnaround work by Trevor Linden, Jim Benning and Willie Desjardins. However, Canucks fans won’t be happy with a firstround playoff loss to the lower-seeded upstart Flames. Expect an injection of youth in the form of 22-year-old Sven Bartschi, a Flames castoff who hails from smallish Langenthal, Sweden. Youth and small-town heroes. No matter who wins, these themes will keep us interested. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters Shield againSt eMF radiation Re: cell tower plans for French Creek. Please let Inge, your recent letter writer from Golden, know that I have a cure for her fears of radiation. One roll of heavy duty aluminum foil wrap can be moulded into almost any shape and applied from head to toe. That ought to stop those pesky rays. I can supply her if she wants. Just have her look for my house — the one with the aluminum foil roof and windows and no electricity, oh yes, and no cell service. In return, perhaps she could tell me how to keep air (second-hand smoke-laden) from entering my house. Air seems to get in no matter what I try. DaviD ShepparD Qualicum Beach
More cell towerS For better health
In response to a couple of letters in The NEWS concerning cell phone towers: I will present an argument for the need of more towers. I’m sure all are aware that a cell tower and your cell phone have to communicate. It is a little known fact that the farther you are away from a tower, the more power your cell phone has to put out. It is comparable to two people talking. If they are next to you, you can talk normally, however, if they are a block away you may have to scream. It is the same with cellular phone communication. When you’re living in an area with better cell phone coverage, which means being closer to a cell tower, your cell phone can transmit at several 100 times lower power level because the phone doesn’t need to “shout” to be heard by the cell tower. Not only does that cut power consumption on your cell phone, which results in better battery life, but the cell tower will not permit the cell phone to transmit at higher levels because that could overload a tower. This is called adaptive power control (APC) and takes place continuously during your call. By lobbying to ban putting up a nearby cell tower, you’re forcing your cell phone to operate at a much higher transmit level

during calls, and your phone’s RF transmit power is typically many hundreds of times stronger than what you see (or exposure) from the cell tower. In summary, the closer the cell tower the more “bars” on your cell phone, the lesser your exposure to non-ionizing RF energy. Keith SherrarD Parksville
need water Meeting Re: Trevor Wicks’ presentation to Parksville city council on April 8 about water system alternatives. Kudos to Wicks for a well researched, detailed and respectful presentation. Some questions by council were insightful and respectful but some were not. Several council members appeared to badger him and seemed to dismiss his alternative solution. Wicks, a volunteer with decades of related experience in water systems, put in countless hours designing a 3-D map and video presentation. Good for Wicks for replying: “I have a Masters in Practicality and a PhD in Common Sense.” Why was Wicks not allowed a rebuttal that had been promised? Parksville residents need the promised town-hall meeting with common sense alternative systems that are economical, not this $37 million dollar unproven version of fracking our aquifers. Lynne DonaLDSon Parksville
wickS’ water pointS I attended the April 8 Parksville city council meeting to hear Trevor Wicks water system alternatives presentation. I felt that his information succinctly and clearly covered his subject. I also thought that some council members asked insightful questions. Wicks was not given a promised opportunity to rebut council comments. I am not convinced that council, CAO Fred Manson and Director of Operation Mike Squire get it, “it” being that residents expect a simpler and cheaper system to
meet VIHA requirements, not a $34 million Cadillac. • Why are DFO objections only now surfacing? Surely the first question by ERWS and consultants would have been to the DFO: “what infrastructure layouts would be problematic to fisheries?” • DFO objections related to location of water intake, and the volume removed from the river. Secondarily, why is the intake again being placed downstream of upper clay bank erosions and then pollution from Errington areas? The proposed huge filtration system can require constant maintenance because of sediment. Doesn’t an intake in upstream clear water make more sense? • A council member stated that CH2M Hill Consultants were internationally renowned. Unmentioned is the fact that CH2M Hill has faced a list of outstanding U.S. federal charges, including water act violations. • The CAO, in a story in The NEWS in January, criticized “people furthering their own agendas” by pointing to allegations about CH2M Hill. These are not gossip and untruths. Portland, Oregon has a web link. • Aquifer storage was not discussed. Previous news had stated that the two test runs failed. What cost per run? • Squire and the consultants had indicated at previous meetings that they were unable to define aquifer boundaries. How can they then be sure the stored water will not follow its own paths elsewhere, i.e. leak away through geological sub-structures, therefore no stored water? • Would forcing pressurized water into aquifers cause similar problems to fracking, i.e. earthquakes? What now? The ERWS seems to be currently dead in the water. Shall we establish a water board, similar to other municipalities, with a cross section of knowledgeable people with related experience or credentials? Shall we then look at more economical and lower maintenance methods to achieve the required VIHA outcomes? pat poweLL Parksville

The French Knight of the Legion of honour medal is one of the highest decorations that France can award and two members of the Qualicum Beach Legion Branch 76 were recipients April 19. Arthur Bridge and Percy C. DeWolfe were presented the prestigious medal by Jean-Christophe Fleury the Consul General of France who came to Qualicum Beach to personally honour the pair for their participation in D-Day operations in France. Fleury told the crowd on hand for the honours and awards ceremony that the medal is the equivalent to the Order of Canada. It was created by Napoleon in 1802 to recognize extraordinary civil achievement in peace time or extraordinary military bravery and service in times of war. He said to the best of their knowledge, there are roughly 2000 Canadian D-Day veterans still living in Canada and what happened on Sunday is part of truly unprecedented two-year process marking the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings. He said French President Francois Hollande signed all the decrees to have the Legion of Honour awarded to 600 D-Day veterans. Percy, who enlisted in 1943, joined the Calgary Highlanders and in 1944 he embarked for France and engaged in combat operations where he caught shrapnel in the eye and all over his body. After he recovered he continued fighting through France, Belgium, Germany and Holland. Arthur Bridge joined the Glengarry Highlanders in 1942. He landed in France in 1944 and fought through Europe and was injured in Holland. The 7th Annual Parksville Uncorked festival was a huge success benefitting two different charities. Tigh-NaMara Seaside Spa Resort General Manager Paul Drummond recently presented Variety, The Children’s Charity, with $2,098.55 from the proceeds of ‘Untapped’ the beer tasting event. The Beach Club Resort General Manager Arthur Wong presented the Rotary Club of Parksville with a $2,644.64 cheque from the proceeds of ‘Swirl’, the signature wine event. Good food helps a great cause on Thursday, April 30. Some local restaurants in the community will unite to help people living with HIV/AIDS by donating 25% of their food revenues to AIDS Vancouver Island. This year marks the tenth annual Dining Out For Life on Vancouver Island. Executive Chef Eric Edwards at Cedars Restaurant at Tigh-Na-Mara is thrilled to once again be participating in the fundraiser. Other restaurants participating in the fundraiser include Radius Food Co. and Lefty’s. Earth Day will be celebrated around the world April 22 and the Wilderness Committee, Mid-Island Chapter is marking the occasion with a with a two-hour tour by donation to the third tallest Sitka spruce tree in the country. Donations from the Earth Day guided tour help support the protection of the threatened ecosystem which is the drinking water source for the Town of Qualicum Beach and Dashwood. The tour of the Qualicum Beach Salmon Forest meets at 1 p.m. at the junction of Kinkade Road and Old Island Highway next to Riverside Resort in Qualicum Beach.
Harissa Saunders of Courtenay was in Parksville Saturday, April 11 for a one-day 4-H Rendezvous held at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre where more than 200 people from all around Vancouver Island came to learn about agriculture. Harrissa enjoyed painting an apron — one of many activities offered that day including arts and crafts, workshops and games.
Donna DeWolfe couldn’t be more proud of her 99-year father Percy DeWolfe. On April 15 he was one of several veterans who reside at The Gardens in Qualicum Beach to be honoured by the Federal Government for their military service during the Second World War. On April 19 at the Qualicum Beach Legion Percy was presented with the French Legion of Honour medal one of the highest decorations France can bestow upon veterans.
There is nothing like cupcakes with sprinkles to celebrate an occasion and there were plenty of those on hand for the official opening of the SOS April 15 in the former Qualicum Beach Elementary School. After Ryder Christison assisted with the ribbon cutting, along with his sister Sophia and brother Cole, the three-year-old was eager to pick out his cupcake. The triplets attend the SOS Preschoolers On The Move program.
Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort was among the 29 employers at the Career Centre’s Hiring Fair April 16 at the PCCC. Team Experience Manager Cindy Lunde (left) and Revenue Manager Vicki DeHaan (right) spoke to about 100 of the 483 job seekers who attended the fair. Tigh-Na-Mara employs about 250 people and Cindy said they have a lot of job openings and resumes can be sent to human.resources@tigh-na-mara.com.
Dave Kasprick showed off some of his amazing blacksmith skills outside the Oceanside Village Artists Gallery April 18. He gave away this beautiful kelp sculpture and raised $132.55 for the Nanoose Bay Food Bank. On Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. artists will be doing demos at the gallery and if you make a donation to their charity you could win the creation of the day. Larry Aguilar will fire pots on April 25 and help the SPCA.
Six-year-old Leland Walters (left) and his three-year-old sister Sophia enjoyed all of the activities at an Earth Day event April 18 including getting a slice from this giant cake. Organized by the Wilderness Committee, MidIsland Chapter, the event took place in Qualicum Beach’s Town Hall Square. The educational displays included Bardo, the North Island Wildlife Recovery’s famous Bard Owl, and free trees to take home and plant.

I really hate to bug you... but...
Arthur Black’s miracle cure for world hunger and just about everything you want to fix
I
believe I’ve come up with the allin-one cure for world hunger, environmental devastation, animal cruelty and jock itch. Okay, I’m not sure about jock itch — but it’ll fix everything else. It’s bugs. We need to eat more of them. When I say bugs, I mean crickets, meal worms, ants, grasshoppers, termites, wasps, locusts, wood-boring beetles and... well, most bugs actually. They’re packed with protein and they’re everywhere. They not only grow on trees, they grow IN trees. Plus they don’t have those Bambi blinkers that make eating meat such a guilt trip. Nobody ever looked into the compound eye of a cicada and thought “Aw... cute little guy.” You’re probably already eating more bugs than you knew. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the U.S. Federal Drug Administration have actually established permissible levels of bug parts in the produce we buy. That’s right — you are already gob-

rently fed to U.S. livestock was fed to people instead, 800 million humans would have full bellies. So why don’t we do it? The ‘ick’ factor, of course. Somehow we decided that frogs’ legs, pork trotters and ‘sweetbreads’ (thymus and pancreas glands) are acceptable but insects are a no-no. Funny thing, taste. Reminds me of the story of the American tourist in a Paris restaurant perusing the menu. “What’s this ‘soupe aux nids d’hirondelles’”? he asks the waiter. “Birds’ Nest soup, monsieur” says the waiter. “Izzat like twigs and feathers and crap?” “Non, monsieur. It is made from the saliva of swallows.” The American is appalled. “What? You expect me to eat somethin’ that came out of a bird’s mouth? Screw that, buddy. Just bring me a couple of hard boiled eggs.” — Arthur Black lives on Saltspring Island. His column appears weekly in The NEWS. E-mail: arblack43@shaw.ca

Wednesday, April 22 • 7:00 pm Refreshments at 6:30pm The Oceanside Division of Family Practice invites the community to attend its “What in the World can I do to end Global Hunger?” community forum. The forum is an opportunity to learn about the Canadian Food Grains Bank and how they develop projects and educational programs for recipients in foreign countries, so they do not have to rely on emergency aid. Water diversion, land reclamation, and eco-farming are just some of the items that will be addressed. Christina Bogucki & Ron Klusmeier, Regional Coordinators for the Canadian Food Grains Bank, will speak about their experiences providing aid support in Ethiopia and Sierra Leone. Many first hand and powerful stories will be told.
We look forward to your attendance. No pre-registration required.

DINING OUT FOR LIFE
Local restaurants part of battle against AIDS Participating restaurants are donating 25 per cent of food sales to AIDS Vancouver Island April 30
It’s the easiest fundraiser you’ll participate in this year — all you have to do is pick up a menu and dine out. On Thursday, April 30, some of the best-loved restaurants across Vancouver Island will come together to take part in Dining Out For Life, AIDS Vancouver Island’s (AVI) annual fundraiser supporting island programs and services for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. For this one day, participating restaurants will donate 25 per cent of food sales to AVI. Now celebrating its tenth year, Dining Out For Life has raised more than $350,000 for programs and services across Vancouver Island. For restaurateurs, the event offers a chance to showcase their community spirit, as well as to connect with potential new customers: diners are encouraged to get out and enjoy a meal at their favourite local establishment, or to try out a new one, with many restaurants offering special menu items on the day. “We are thrilled to once again be participating in the AIDS Vancouver Island Dining Out For Life fundraiser on April 30 and feeding a need on the Island with great food and much-needed awareness,” said Eric Edwards, executive chef at Cedars Restaurant at Tigh-Na-Mara Resort in Parksville. Radius Food Co, Lefty’s Fresh Food, and Lefty’s Too are the other local eateries participating this year. Edwards spoke a little about his passion for what he does and about the dishes at Cedars. “It’s about creating delicious food, simple ingredients, crisp, clean flavours, and maintaining the integrity of the dish, caring about who you’re preparing the dish for and doing your best to make their culinary experience special,” said Edwards. “If I had to recommend a signature dish it would have to be our West Coast Cedar’s Plank Salmon — it represents our region perfectly. The scallops on our menu are also amazing and we love using fresh local ingredients like Qualicum Bay

Scallops, Little Qualicum Cheeseworks, greens and herbs from Nanoose Edibles whenever possible ... it’s very special to have relationships with our farm producers and we have so many in the region it’s awesome.” “Being an executive chef has always been my passion and I’ve been doing it for over 30 years. For me, food is all about family, be it preparing breakfast for 1,800 people at the Annual Toy Drive charity event, making Christmas Turkey Dinner at the Salvation Army, creating dishes at Cedars, supporting Dining Out For Life, or barbecuing in my backyard. It all
comes down to feeding family.” For AVI, the fundraiser provides much-needed financial support for their programs and services, which span across the island from Port Hardy to Victoria, and include hot meal programs, nutrition education, counselling, HIV testing, education and prevention workshops, and nursing care. Through this comprehensive combination of services, AVI is working to reduce Vancouver Island’s rate of new HIV infections to zero. “We need the support of the community more than ever — the demand for our services continues to grow and our
funding has not kept pace. We’re closer than ever to getting to zero new infections on Vancouver Island and need to stay focused on reaching this goal,” says Katrina Jensen, executive director at AIDS Vancouver Island. Dining Out For Life Vancouver Island is part of a larger international effort involving AIDS service organizations serving 60 cities and regions across North America. In 2014, Dining Out For Life events across the U.S. and Canada raised more than $4 million for HIV/AIDS programs and services. — NEWS Staff/AVI

SOS GRADWEAR PROGRAM
Local teens cloaked in class for graduation The program could use some more donations of small and medium-sized tuxes and suits LISSA ALEXANDER Marketing Coordinator Society of Organized Services
Many a glamorous and fanciful dress are highly revered during an important life event, and then are cast to the depths of our closets, rarely given the chance to show their glory again. The Society of Organized Services (SOS) Grad Wear program aims to change that. For years the program has been bedecking high school grads and their dates with new and gently used outfits, along with accessories and shoes, all for $5. SOS Grad Wear Volunteer Debbie Mitchell said the program is a great way to recycle beautiful clothing and also give teenagers the chance to try on a variety of colours and styles to see what suits them best. “Grad is one of a few times in your life where you’ll have the opportunity to dress in a stunning gown or tux. This is a fun, no-pressure process,” she said. Mitchell said graduation comes with a host of pressures:
emotional, financial and peer. She said she feels the program can alleviate some of that stress. The Grad Wear program has been fortunate to receive a number of brand new dresses from a shop in Courtenay, and the majority of the remaining dresses have only been worn once. The occasional dress has needed minor repair work which has been done by a volunteer seamstress. Mitchell said it’s very rewarding to see young girls happy and excited about their finds, and one girl wanted to pay more than $5 because she felt guilty for getting such a good deal. But it’s a win-win situation, Mitchell said. Those that donate their dresses can feel good knowing someone else will get to enjoy it as they did, and the recipient gets a gown without having to stress about the costs to her and her family. Although the program continues to successfully suit up young gentlemen in dapper outfits, the program could use some more donations of small and medium-sized tuxes and suits, Mitchell said. “Because many men rent their tuxes we don’t get many donated to the program,” she said. For women, the program is stocked with the shorter-style

date dresses as well as long gowns. But SOS gratefully accepts donations of dresses for the program throughout the year, and especially in these months leading up to graduation. The program also accepts gently used shoes and accessories. Mitchell said she and her fellow Grad Wear volunteer Trish Marrion recognise that choosing an outfit for graduation can be a big decision. She encourages grads to book an appointment and bring someone along whose opinion they value, along with an open mind. And for those grads that have benefitted from the program, please endorse the program through social media, or by sharing the Facebook page (Facebook.com/SOSgradwear) and spread the word. The SOS Grad Wear Program is not located at the SOS Thrift Shop. Instead, all the outfits are located in a room at the SOS Child, Youth & Family Centre in Parksville, and grads need to call to make an appointment. Once there, they can try on numerous outfits in privacy. To book an appointment or to make a donation to the program, please call the SOS at 250248-2093 ext. 232. The Society of Organized Services (SOS) officially opened its child, youth and family centre at Qualicum Commons, the former Qualicum Beach Elementary School, on April 15. There to cut the ribbon was, from left, Ryder, Sophia and Curtis Christison, School District 69 Board chair Eve Flynn, SOS Executive Director Renate Sutherland, SOS Board President Cory McIntosh, Qualicum Beach town councillor Neil Horner and Cole Christison.

New role for elementary Programs for children and families at the site of the former elementary school location started in February BRENDA GOUGH NEWS Contributor
The SOS is officially open in the former Qualicum Beach Elementary School. The sun was shining and the mood was jubilant during a gathering outside Qualicum Commons April 15 to celebrate the official grand opening of the Society of Organized Services (SOS) at the former school. The SOS has been offering programs to children and families at the former Qualicum Beach Elementary School since February of this year. The non-profit organization has now secured a team of volunteers to help staff at the site, and SOS Executive Director Renate Sutherland has moved her office to the new location. Sutherland, who welcomed guests and community partners to the celebration, acknowledged the other tenants at Qualicum Commons, as well as the many volunteers who have already started helping out at the new location. School District 69 Board Chair Eve Flynn spoke on behalf of the school district and said it was exciting to see the repurposed building now brimming with activities for everyone in the community. Coun. Neil Horner, who spoke on behalf of
Qualicum Beach town council, stated that although nobody wanted to see the elementary school closed, the community “turned lemons into lemonade.” He pointed out that the building is now a bustling new community hub which is a positive thing for all residents. SOS Board Chair Cory McIntosh revealed the programs that are currently running at the SOS Child, Youth and Family Centre, and how they are already meeting the social needs of Qualicum Beach citizens. After the speeches, the speakers cut the ribbon, which was eagerly held by three-year-old triplets Sophia, Cole and Ryder Christison, who attended the SOS Preschoolers On The Move program earlier that day. People then headed inside the SOS Child, Youth and Family Centre for snacks and refreshments provided by Quality Foods, and a tour of the facilities. The SOS started offering free programs in Qualicum Beach in February but hopes to expand that down the road once they seek out new collaborations and avenues of funding. The SOS currently offers over 30 free programs to residents of all ages in School District 69, funded by community donations and its Thrift Shop in Parksville. To learn more about SOS programs in both Qualicum Beach and Parksville visit the website www.sosd69.com or call 250-248-2093. To call the SOS Child, Youth and Family Centre in Qualicum Beach call 250-752-2040.

SATURDAY NIGHT AT ERRINGToN HALL
Road warriors: Steadies play 100 shows/year ‘Playing live is the best way to build a band and a following’ Jessica skelton reporter@pqbnews.com
Saskatoon-based band The Steadies is on tour for one reason: the Errington Hall. “You guys are the reason we’re doing this,” said founder, frontman and former member of Wide Mouth Mason, Earl Pereira. According to Pereira, the coordinators at the hall booked The Steadies to play the upcoming gig last year and the group decided they didn’t want to make the long trip just for one show. So, they’re currently in the middle of a two week tour through the Rockies and down to the Island, where Errington will be their last stop. Taking the long road isn’t something new for The Steadies, however. Ever the road warriors, the group regularly play 100 shows a year. “I’m kind of old-school like that,” said Pereira, who spoke to The NEWS while en route to Kelowna. “Playing live is the best way to build a band and a following.” It’s a modus operandi that has worked well for the group. Since their formation in 2010, the group has shared the stage with Ziggy
Marley, The Roots, Blue Rodeo, The Wailers and more. They’ve also headlined a number of festivals, which Pereira said has been a particular goal for the group. “We like to do shows that are more events,” he said, adding that they’re trying to steer away from doing bar shows where the music is not the main draw of the night. The reason: they want to play for people who are there to listen and to dance. That desire is reflected in their music as well. The Steadies take the popular Top 40 sound and mix it with rocksteady and reggae influences, creating what they’ve dubbed island rock. “No matter your mood, The Steadies pick you up and carry you to the beach in your mind, the club in your dreams, the place you go to clear your head and dance,” said their website. Pereira also said the group often blends their original songs together with cover songs into a long, continuous dance tune. “We can do 20 minutes without stopping,” he said. “We’re creating our own style.” The Steadies are also solidifying their sounds at the moment. Drummer Lexie Miller is still a relatively new addition to the trio, having joined up with bassist Pereira and guitarist Justin “Juice” Lee last year when the previous drummer left to focus

on another project. “It’s really exciting right now,” said Pereira, who calls Miller one of the “most powerful” drummers he’s played with. As such, Pereira promised a “high-energy show” with a “feelgood vibe.” Also, the hall’s music
co-ordinator Val Dare said the floor will definitely be cleared for dancing. The Steadies will play at the Errington Hall on Saturday, April 25 starting at 8:30 p.m. Doors to the venue open at 8 p.m. Adult tickets are $20 and are available at Cranky Dog Mu-
sic in Parksville, Heaven on Earth in Qualicum, Creekmore Coffee and Errington Store. Tickets for children aged 1318 are $10 and $5 for children aged 6-12 are $5 at the door. Children aged 5 years and under get in free.

Innovative Dance Arts studio has reason to be proud. Several of the school’s dancers received accolades at two recent regional dance festivals. These dancers took part in the North Island Festival of Performing Arts (NIFPA) in Courtenay at the end of February and the Upper Island Musical Festival (UIMF), which just finished at the beginning of this month in Nanaimo. At NIFPA, dancer Sophie Carl
was selected as intermediate modern alternate for the upcoming Performing Arts B.C. provincial festival in Powell River May 26-30. Similarly, Fionnuala Irving was selected at UIMF as Intermediate Modern Rep for the Performing Arts BC provincial festival. Irving also received a bursary for outstanding performance at UIMF, as did Sophie Carl, Mackenna Jardine, Ali Jenkins, Clara Keefer and Madison Ranger. Finally, one of the studio’s teachers, Shilo Brocklebank, was honoured by receiving the most entertaining award for her piece Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’. — NEWS Staff/Innovative

Internationally recognized jazz musician Hugh Fraser is returning to the Island. The double Juno-award-winning trombonist, pianist and composer, who is originally from Victoria, will play with the Geoff Bowen Trio this Sunday in Nanoose. “I miss the Island terribly,” he said. This will be Fraser’s first show on Vancouver Island since he moved, again, to the Mainland three years ago. And while the move over the Strait may still pull a few heartstrings, Fraser also said that returning to Vancouver has been a boon to his music. Most importantly, he is simply clos-
er to the jazz scene. In fact, Fraser now lives so close to where he rehearses and plays that he can “just walk to jazz.” No longer teaching full-time, the musician dedicates himself to rehearsing three to five days a week, writing around a tune a week and getting ready to record with his large ensemble. He is also focusing on road gigs again. In the past, Fraser said he could average 50 flights a year and has traveled around the world, playing, living and teaching in places like New York, London and Banff. While the jaunt over to Nanoose Bay may not be a long-haul, Fraser is excited to play “some serious jazz trombone” at the upcoming gig nonetheless. Alongside the trio of Geoff Bowen, Ken Lister and Ian Sinclair, Fraser said he expects to perform a selection

Experience for emerging artists JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pqbnews.com
Greg Swainson is getting a little help from his students. To help celebrate the seasonal opening of his studio gallery, the watercolourist has asked his students from the past year to exhibit some of their work. “It gives the community the chance to see what people can do,” said Swainson, who runs Raintree Studio and Gallery out of his home in Qualicum Beach. He also said that the show gives the 20 or so emerging artists, who vary in
levels of experience, an opportunity to show their work and receive positive feedback. “They’re their own worst critics,” he said. “Most of them, with a little encouragement, could flourish.” The student exhibit will be entirely composed of watercolours, which were painted either in one of Swainson’s classes, another class or at home. This will be the third year students have exhibited work at Raintree. Of course, Swainson’s own work will also be featured during the opening.
His watercolours will hang in an adjoining studio. The three-day opening show will run May 1-3, the studio will be open 4-8 p.m. on the Friday and 12-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. At that point Raintree Studio and Gallery, which is located at 5101 West Island Hwy, will revert to its regular summer hours: Thursday to Sunday from 12-5 p.m. The gallery will be open until September. JEAN FERDINAND DIGRAS 1931-2015
Jean left this world on Monday, April 13th 2015, when his very weak heart stopped beating. He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Sandi; son, Eric; daughters, Karen and Shelley; granddaughter, Laila; sister, Madelene Digras Dreano and our wonderful family and friends in France, the United States, Canada and throughout the world. Jean was born in Brittany, France and has lived and worked as a professor of English and French in Saigon, a French diplomat in Addas Abba, Chicago and Ottawa where he changed direction and worked as a translator and editor. Jean and Sandi retired to Parksville in 2005. Known by his doctors as the “Duracell Manâ€? for surviving many life challenging illnesses, he was one of the first at the Ottawa Heart Institute and again for by-pass surgery on their 25th anniversary. The family is grateful to the medical support of Doctor Hector Baillie and his team at the Heart Function Clinic in the Nanamio Hospital who have kept Jean going since his arrival on Vancouver Island. They also thank Dr. Marlene Van De Wayde and her nursing team. Throughout his life, Jean has always loved sports and after playing soccer and tennis he took up golf. He enjoyed the friendship of his fellow duffers at Qualicum Memoral Golf Course and the men’s group at Brigadoon Golf Course. He extends special ‘thanksâ€? to Doug Pickard of Runfluid for keeping him on his feet and motivated even when he was in his final months of life. Jean’s favourite song was A WONDERFUL WORLD and his feeling about his life is summed up in the last stanza‌â€?and I think to myself what a wonderful world.â€? It’s been a long goodbye darling but you are now at rest. God Bless you from your wife, family, and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held in Jean’s honour from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Friday, April 24th at the Qualicum Beach Inn, 2690 Island Highway West, in Qualicum Beach, BC. To send a condolence to the family please visit www.yatesfuneral.ca

Royals earn first win of new season Parksville baseball team beat Victoria Mariners 4-3 Sunday, despite some injuries T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
The Quality Foods Parksville Royals earned their first win of the season as they beat the Victoria Mariners on Sunday afternoon 4-3. In a game that went right down to the final inning, the Royals would put one on the board in the final frame, giving them their first win on the young season. In total, the Royals played four games this past weekend, two close games on Saturday afternoon against the Abbotsford Cardinals, losing 3-0 and 4-3, while splitting wins on Sunday with the Mariners, beating them 4-3 and losing 11-6. “We played pretty good,” head coach Dave Wallace said. “We had good pitching all weekend, they all gave us a chance to win all of our games.” “Saturday we weren’t able to capitalize on the chances we had and Sunday we played much better, we hit the ball well and did a lot of things right offensively. We just need to make sure we can take advantage of the good situations we put ourselves in and really give ourselves the best chance to win ball games.” Liam Janzen played the role of hero on Sunday, having a huge day at the plate for the Royals. Janzen drove in the winning

run against the Mariners, his second RBI of the game. He had three RBIs in the second, losing, game against the Mariners. Zack Senay picked up his
first win of the season on Sunday, pitching in relief of starter Adam McKillican who went five innings, giving up two unearned runs on three hits while striking out four batters.
Owen Kelly kicked off the weekend for the Parksville Royals on the mound with another solid outing, pitching seven innings and giving up three runs on four hits while striking out
10 batters. It’s something that coach Wallace is used to seeing out of Kelly every time he takes the mound and this weekend was no different. “Owen’s a workhorse for us,” Wallace said. “He is going to give you a chance to win the ballgame every time he’s out there on the mound.” “His confidence kept growing with each start last season and he’s to the point now where he gets out there and knows he’s going to throw a strong game.” The Royals ran in to some injury trouble before their first game of the weekend on Saturday as outfielder Ethan Fox went down with an injury in warm up, leaving one of their big bats out of the lineup for all four games this past weekend. Also out of the lineup was Jacob Ingersoll, who is recovering from a broken nose after being on the receiving end of a grounder that took a bad hop. Outfielder Jayden Saban, a 17-year-old from Powell River, had a solid outing at the dish this weekend, going 3-7 on Saturday and 3-8 on Sunday. The Royals are back in action this weekend with another double header at home, as they play host to the always dangerous Langley Blaze on Sunday, April 26. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m., with game two scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Former Kondor golfer making mark with SFU T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
Michelle Waters is steadily becoming a reliable player for the Simon Fraser University women’s golf team. In just her first year at SFU, the former Kwalikum Secondary School Kondor is showing what she’s made of. Waters, who graduated from KSS in 2014, took time before her next tournament in Couer d’Alane, Idaho — the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship — to talk about her season thus far as a member of the SFU

A Qualicum Beach guest book from 100 years ago WENDY MAURER NEWS Contributor
Today I feel like an explorer. I had the privilege of reviewing a guest book from General Money’s Homme House. It is leather bound, with unlined pages and spans from June 21, 1912 to June, 1939. Entries show flowing script with penmanship often flamboyant. Writing was done with fountain pens and the household favoured black ink. In 1912, Noel and Maud Money’s Homme House was in Herefordshire, England. On the inside cover they noted in 1914, Homme House was in Qualicum Beach. To see more on Homme House, England visit www.homehouse.co.uk. The book appears to be a record of house guests and most often attendee’s at parties. Ladies’ names included such as Violet, Hilda, Ruth, Helen, Dorothy, Molly, Evelyn and Emily. Men’s names included such as Charles, Jack, Arthur, Edward, John, George and Dermot. Many of the surnames are British. On October 4-6, 1919 the Governor General’s staff stayed (two women and three men) at QB Homme House, while perhaps the Governor General stayed at the Qualicum Beach Hotel? In 1936 it is signed by the Tweedmuir’s of Rideau Hall, Ottawa. The set of names that jumped out at me was Robert and Olave Baden-Powell who visited April 25-27, 1923. Lord Baden-Powell was a lieutenant-general in the British Army, writer and founder of the Scout Movement. They must have been impressed because Marion E. Kinloch, Deputy Provincial Commissioner of the BC Girl Guides, visited on June 8, 1923. As the years passed, certain names are seen repeatedly and the total attendance at events increased. They celebrated Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Easter, and hosted impromptu dances and house parties as well as

“Upper Island Championships”. The Lee’s and Tryon’s from French Creek often attended events as did the Money’s from Victoria and Oak Bay. Visitors came from the throughout the region, across Canada, England, California on many occasions and even a few from Hawaii. For the years 1923, ‘24, ‘26, ‘28, ‘29 and 1935, there was an event held at the end of August, beginning of September. It was simply titled “The Jaffa Gate”. Consider me curious. Attendance varied from seven in 1923 to 14 in 1935 – all men. A quick call to Lorraine Bell at the museum took me to the internet and Jerusalem. Jaffa Gate is a stone portal in the historic walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. It turns out, according to Wikipedia, that in 1917 British general Edmond Allenby liberated Jerusalem and entered the Old City through the
Jaffa Gate. He and his men entered the city on foot in a show of respect for the city. Then I checked Brad Wylie’s book on QB and he mentions that General Money served with Allenby during that timeframe. Draw your own conclusions on what the QB “Jaffa Gate” event was about. It does highlight the value of preserving old documents, including such simple things as guest books. At our last museum membership meeting we had just been discussing the British impact on the development of Qualicum Beach, so reviewing the guest book was especially fascinating. I would love to interview long time residents of Qualicum Beach to capture your stories about the history of Qualicum Beach. If you are willing to share them, please call the QB Museum at 250-752-5533.

Rage girls host annual Icebreaker U-14 team got in some good pre-season games T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
The U-14 Parksville Rage girls fastball team took to the ball fields down at the Parksville Community Park this weekend for their Icebreaker tournament. With five teams taking part in the Icebreaker over this past weekend, the Rage team got in four games and a good amount of experience before their season opener against Ladysmith on Monday (score not available at press time). “It was a fun tournament,” coach Ian Kellow said. “It was more just for fun for everyone there, not really about keeping score and who finishes where.” “It’s a great way to get in some exhibition games and get everyone some good playing time before the games that count towards our regular season take place.” The Rage will see about nine regular season games among a total of six tournaments through the season, seven if they make it all the way to the provincials. “We’re going to play a lot of ball,” Kellow said. “The nice thing about it is it gives us a chance to see where we stack up against some of the teams that aren’t in our district, like the teams from Victoria and over on the Mainland.” “We’ve got lots of tournaments that we’ll play in but it’s the last tournament of the year that we want to find ourselves in.”

Ravensong spring show Parksville Qualicum Beach synchronized swimmers invite the public to drop by T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
The Ravensong Synchro club will be holding a couple of events later this month to showcase their talents, thank their supporters and even give others a chance to come and see what it’s all about. Taking place on April 26, from 5 to 6 p.m., the Ravensong Synchro team will take to the pool for their annual Spring Water Show. The event is free for all to attend and there will be a couple of dignitaries in attendance as well, Mary Beil (Parksville councillor) and Terry Welch, who recently turned 98 years old and celebrated her birthday in February. On April 30, the club will host a “Bring a Friend Day” which is also free for anyone to attend. There are limited spaces available, however, so anyone looking to join the fun can contact Heather at secretary@ravensongsynchro.com or 250-248-4634.

Travelling to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho this week, Waters caught a brief glimpse of the beautiful Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course, which features a floating green that you need to travel to by boat. “It’s a really nice course,” Waters said. “We caught a glimpse just from the putting green but it looks like a great track. The island green that you have to get to by boat is pretty cool!” Waters knows that the improvements in her game will come with time and practice, something she knows she’ll have to work extra hard at in order to get the results she knows she’s capable of having. “There’s a few areas to work on,” Waters said. “I’d like to focus more on my short game, spending more time chipping and putting.” “I think that really learning to read the greens and all those things that you have to take in to account while you’re out there playing, it’s those little things that make all the difference out there.” If she continues to improve like she has been all season, so far, Waters should find the success she’s continually looking for each week she steps back out on the course. It’s all coming around for the first year university student as she navigates both the educational side of things and the, often times tricky, game of golf.
