Lifestyle plays a huge part in how healthy we are. Healthy living is about making smart lifestyle choices for today and for the future. Social networks, eating right, physical fitness, emotional wellness and spiritual wellness are important components of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. This Guide provides contacts for local sports, groups, services, literacy, rehabilitation and general interest programs, festivals and activities. Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) Family Programs

Qualified early childhood educators lead learning activities, including stories, music and art to help children get ready for success in kindergarten. Each session includes a Mother Goose circle time, time to participate together in play based learning centers and a nutritious snack. Parents and caregivers are likely to discover new ways to support their children’s learning at home, and may make valuable connections with others attending the centre. To register for the StrongStart program, parents need to bring legal proof of identification for their children the first time they attend. For example, they could bring a birth certificate, permanent resident card, certificate of citizenship, documents issued by Immigration Canada, Aboriginal Status cards, passport/visa, or other vital statistics documents. Benefits to participating children and to the parents/ caregivers include: Children will develop physically, linguistically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. Parents and caregivers will: gain knowledge of activities they can try at home to further support their child’s learning; learn about a range of guidance strategies that support social and emotional development; receive information on other services in the community; acquire knowledge of healthy snacks they can continue to feed their child at home and/or pack for that child when he or she starts school; and make valuable connections with other parents or caregivers

Interior Health Child Health Clinics

Parents are welcome to drop in to the Kimberley Health Centre (Interior Health) to weigh their babies or discuss concerns with public health nurses weekdays from 8:30am-4:30pm. A free program for women or families seeking information, resources, services, support or community referrals during pregnancy & the first six months of parenthood. Group drop-in program held Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m. and includes supper, child minding and limited transportation. Friends of Children

A non-profit society assisting Northern BC and East Kootenay families with children in extraordinary medical need. Each year the registered charity receives over 200 requests for support with children’s medical emergencies, therapies, specialized equipment, drug prescriptions plus out-of-town accommodation, meal and travel costs. Friends of Children coordinate with other organizations to help with the child’s medical challenges. We depend on the support of generous sponsors, donors and volunteers to provide a much-needed service for Northern BC and East Kootenay regions. Offers swimmers ages 7 to adult an opportunity to develop swimming skills, endurance and team spirit in a fun, competitive atmosphere. Novice program for ages 6 and under. An organization for young people, ages 6 to 21. Our Motto is “Learn to do by Doing”. Have fun while learning and participating in Public Speaking, Demonstrations, Educational Displays and carrying out a project in a variety of areas, such as crafts, sewing, foods, beef, horse, sheep or a topic of interest to you. Beaver Scouts: Tuesdays 5:45pm - 7pm For Boys and Girls ages 5-7. Fun and friendship are the cornerstones of the Beaver Scout program. Through an adventurous program of outdoor activities, creative play, music, and cooperative games, Beaver Scouts enjoy time with their friends, learn how to get along within a group, and develop confidence to be themselves. Cub Scouts: Wednesday 6-8pm For Boys and Girls ages 8-10. Challenging hikes, weekend camps, and an introduction to water activities like canoeing and kayaking are just a few of the fun outdoor adventures that Cub Scouts enjoy. With the motto of “Do Your Best” front and center, Cub Scouts are encouraged to try new and challenging activities. Learning important first aid skills, paddling a canoe for the first time, or leading a game at camp will open the door for Cub Scouts to try other adventures they never thought possible. Scouts: Mondays 6-8pm For Boys and Girls ages 11-14. The focus of this age group is to develop personal growth through challenging outdoor camps based on minimal impact camping. Scouts learn to move through the land without leaving a trace. Scouts learn to take responsibility for themselves and the world around them. Through their motto of “Be Prepared” Scouts experience a variety of activities such as high ropes training, search and rescue skills, and community involvement. At this level Scouts are laying the groundwork to becoming leaders within their communities. Venturer Scouts: Mondays 6-8pm For Boys and Girls ages 15-17. The motto for Venturer Scouts is “Challenge”. Leadership skills and community service become ways that these young adults can give back the fun and adventure skills they have learned. Youth leadership and adventure are the cornerstone of Venturer Scout activities. Register on-line at Scouts Canada Website: www.Scouts.ca Programs run from Sept - June, every week with volunteer leaders at usually Resker Hall or Campstone, sometimes it will be on a different night to link up with other sections and/or on the weekends depending on the activity. Always looking for New Leaders - great way to spend time with your child and enjoy our outdoors together. Parents are expected to attend minimum of 2 council meetings and help out with sandbagging and selling popcorn fundraisers. Kids and Leaders MUST be registered in order to attend. Leaders will also need a course done through the scouts website - easy to do, an interview, criminal record check and references. Cost is approx. $175/yr. Special $155 when you register on line between June-August. Plus uniform and badge book (approx. $45). Works out to less than $22/mth for a great kid’s activity and you can join anytime. CHILDREN & YOUTH Kimberley Girl Guides Mountain View District

An organization for girls & young women from ages 5 & up (Sparks, Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders, Rangers and Trex). This organization belongs to the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) which is the world’s largest organization of girls and women. Guiding is an accepting environment with diverse and exciting programs and activities that offer the chance to discover new interests, learn valuable leadership skills and make lasting friendships. It provides opportunities for personal growth, mentoring and national/international travel as well as opportunities for post-secondary scholarships. We have a serious need for leaders. Kimberley Alpine Hockey School Camp

This week long camp assists boys and girls to become improved hockey players. The curriculum focuses on the fundamental skills necessary to successfully enjoy the game. Students are encouraged to pursue excellence through a fun, challenging and progressive learning environment. Applicants must supply their own equipment. Soft trails or graded roads are a lot easier on your joints. Also, dirt surfaces tend to be uneven, forcing you to slow down a bit and focus on where to put your feet – great for agility and concentration.

Kimberley Gymnastics & Gyminy Crickets

2015 Summer Camps - Scamper Camp for 5 and 6 year olds runs 9:30am – 12 noon on Mondays & Wednesday from June 29 to July 15, new members pay $45/week and Gym ‘n Swim Camp for ages 7 and up from 1:00-4:00 pm on Monday, Wednesday & Fridays from June 29 to July 17, new members pay $85/week. We offer our Gyminy Crickets early learning program for 3 to 5 year olds, planned and coached by well trained and certified staff, which runs Monday to Friday 9am – 12 noon, September to June. Recreational, developmental, competitive, trampoline and special needs programs for all ages. Birthday Parties, private lessons and gym rentals are planned and supervised by a certified coach. Basketball Courts are located at Moyie Street & 6th Avenue and at corner of Swan Avenue & Diamond Street. The Rotary Park Playground is located on Rotary Drive between Archibald and Mackenzie Streets. There are also tennis courts and soccer/baseball fields at this location. Baseball Fields are located behind the Centennial Centre on 4th Avenue, behind the Marysville Arena on 312th Avenue and at the intersection of 308 Avenue and 303 Street in Marysville. KEYSA – Kootenay East Youth Soccer Association KEYSA is the parent organization for youth soccer in the region. Kimberley Mountain Bike Skills Park and Skate Park

Located at the corner of Rotary Drive and Marsden Street, these parks are connected by beautiful creekside trails and provide both skaters and cyclists with the opportunity to carve and flow through bowls and launch jumps. This area also is a great picnic destination. Bring your body armour to participate or take in the action from the sidelines and enjoy the fun and sun. Helmets are required to ride in this park. Respiratory Therapy Program

This program provides general respiratory assessments with oxygen saturation and auscultation, asthma/COPD and other lung disease education, tracheostomy tube care, inhaler/puffer education including description of medications and their role in the lungs, shortness of breath management/action plan creation, CPAP/BIPAP review and more. Seniors Helping Seniors

This program establishes a supportive connection between a volunteer and a senior in need. It fosters a healthy social and supportive relationship allowing older persons to help other older and more vulnerable seniors engage in their community. The program coordinator recruits volunteers who are then matched up with a senior participant. The volunteers provide the seniors with many valuable services such as: transportation, a walking partner, social opportunities, someone to do light repairs, relief from care giving responsibilities, and peer support. Volunteers that are seniors themselves who continue to utilize their life long skills, by providing support to more disadvantaged and vulnerable seniors. Seniors Wellness in Motion (SWIM)

A seniors-based program that provides Kimberley seniors with a healthy social opportunity including: transportation to & from the Kimberley Aquatic Centre, an aquatic exercise program in the pool and a group social. The program is targeted to isolated seniors that may live alone and who may live at risk, who may no longer drive, have little opportunity to socialize with others and those who could benefit from a low impact and safe exercise program. Many people don’t know how to brush their teeth properly. Hold your toothbrush in the same way that you would hold a pencil, and brush for at least two minutes. Active Aging

Designed to support older adults to lead independent, active and healthy lives. Through community partnerships the program will provide opportunities for seniors to fully participate in physical, social and community life programs in Kimberley. The program helps facilitate and educate seniors on a variety of topics; affordable and accessible transportation in order to assist access to leisure and recreation opportunities, orientation to local recreation programs, inter-generational programs, information sharing among service providers, and outreach opportunities for those with physical limitations. Community Nutrition Classes

Open to all ages, this program provides group education sessions for health promotion and disease management. Classes are taught by a Registered Dietitian and include cholesterol lowering, blood pressure lowering, healthy eating, label reading & behaviour change. Diabetes Education Program

Offering group and individual education sessions with support for diabetes management, insulin initiation and adjustment. Doctor’s referral is required. This type of program is designed for people of all ages with Type 1, Type 2, Pre-diabetes and Gestational Diabetes. Program is run by a Registered Nurse and Registered Dietitian. 8 Happy Feet by Gudrun

Offers reflexology using reflex points in the foot, hand and ear which correspond to every part, gland and organ of the body. Application of pressure on these reflexes, releases tension, improves circulation and helps promote the function in the related areas of the body. Reflexology may be done on people of all ages including newborns, elderly, pregnant women, pre and post surgery, people with heart conditions and diabetes. Kimberley Trail System

The Lois Creek Trails located adjacent to the Townsite and Morrison subdivisions are popular for biking and hiking as well as cross-country skiing in the winter months. The NorthStar Rails to Trails is a paved trail for running, walking, biking and blading that runs from the Civic Centre to Cranbrook. The Lions Trails run between Kimberley and Marysville and give you a choice of pathways ranging from narrow to wide, flat to rocky and sunny to shady. Trail maps showing these and many more local trails are available at City Hall, the Visitor Information Centre and the Kimberley Riverside Campground.
