Alleviating hunger locally and abroad was the thrust of the day at Aldergrove Secondary school on Thursday, April 9. The school’s Global Education and Leadership class and Langley-based Food for Famine Society co-hosted an event titled United Against Hunger and Poverty in the morning and during lunch hour. Then in the afternoon the school helped pack the Starfish food backpacks for elementary school students who need help getting through the weekends when in-school breakfast and lunch programs aren’t operating. The Food for Famine program included musical and dance numbers by the visiting Japanese dance troupe Terakoya as well as Aldergrove students Danielle Longpre and Ashley Taylor in the school’s dramnasium. Her journey started in June 2008, when she learned how a fortified peanut paste known as Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) was being used to treat Severe Acute Malnutrition. This knowledge altered the trajectory of her life forever. “The miracle of a simple, fortified peanut butter paste that could save the lives of children was astonishing to me. Children no longer needed to die,” says Martini. RUTF (Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food) fortified peanut paste that’s been carefully formulated to provide all of a child’s basic nutritional needs. Hundreds ride Fraser Valley Express on first day Aldergrove Star
Buses were full Monday, April 6 for the first day of operation of the new Fraser Valley Express (FVX) bus, according to the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD). Although dignitaries rode the bus last week on its official launch, Monday was the first day for public passengers on the route, which connects Abbotsford and
Chilliwack with Langley and the TransLink system. With rides free for the first day, FVRD communications manager Jennifer Kinneman said many locals tried out the service. Exact numbers were not available, but staff estimated that “a couple hundred riders” used the new route, Kinneman said. “It was so great to see so many people on the FVX and using tran-

in Abbotsford – at the McCallum Park & Ride and at HighStreet. It connects with TransLink’s Carvolth Exchange in Langley. The FVX does not stop in Aldergrove but riders can connect with it via the BC Transit bus from Aldergrove to High Street or McCallum and travel on to Chilliwack. Terrisa Inthapanya ‘Every time I am volunteering, I am growing’ Aldergrove’s Terrisa Inthapanya is among the 2015 nominees for the Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award. The award is given to a Langley secondar y student in recognition of their athletic, scholastic and community efforts. Te r r i s a Inthapanya likes to keep busy. “I like using my downtime to further benefit myself,” explained the Grade 12 Aldergrove Community Secondar y student. “Every time I am volunteering, I am growing, so I like to keep busy and surround myself with positive energies.” Inthapanya plays volleyball, rugby and basketball, with her skill and commitment earning her an unsung hero award, an all-star award and several most valuable player awards at tournaments.
When she is not playing, she likes to coach, referee and keep score for other teams. She is leadership and recreation l ead e r s h i p student who have provided more than 300 hours of volunteer service, helping the school and community events such as intramurals and the Breakfast Club. Inthapanya has served on student council and last year, took part in a volunteer trip to Belize. She has constantly been on the school’s academic and effort honour rolls since 2011. “I would say I am very determined. “Once I have a goal, I want to accomplish it,” she said. Inthapanya will attend the UBC Sauder School of Business, becoming the first person on her mother’s side of the family to attend university.

Naturalists and environmentalists will be gathering at Campbell Valley Regional Park this Sunday to commemorate the late Glenn Roderick Ryder. Ryder, who died at his Aldergrove home a year and a half ago, was renowned far and wide as a keen and keen-eyed observer of wildlife for all of his 75 years. Perhaps most important of all, he kept exhaustive journals of his observations. These records along with his drawings and paintings are considered the best and most complete of their type. In tribute to Ryder, two old associates, Wayne Campbell and Phillip Henderson recently wrote a book titled “An Old-School Naturalist: Glenn Roderick Ryder (1938-2013).” Published by the Biodiversity Centre for Wildlife Studies, it is a special edition of its biannual publication, Wildlife Afield (copies are available via their website www.wildlifebc.org, and will also be available for purchase at the tribute April 19). The book tells of Ryder’s difficult childhood as an orphan, who to escape the harsh realities of those hard years would go on long hikes in the woods and mountains. This love affair with nature would last throughout his 75 years in this world. In those years he recorded many

He was always helpful and creative in devising means for fellow researchers to see and photograph animals in their natural habitat. He was a key member of Langley Field Naturalists and Central Valley Naturalists, and was a key resource for Langley Environmental Partners Society and Metro Vancouver Regional Parks. Ryder also built trails, such as Ryder Trail (commonly called the Sumas Grind by fitness buffs today) on Sumas Mountain, for his outings, and as he wished, his

The murder trial for Jason Brewer won’t be back in Supreme Court in New Westminster until June. Last week, the trial came to a halt, just after the accused took the stand. According to the court registry, the trial ran out of court time and the June date was the nearest slot to
resume the case. Brewer, 26, has pleaded not guilty in the stabbing death of his friend Cole Manning, 40, whose naked, bloodied body was found face down on Brewer’s bed New Year’s Eve of 2012. Brewer doesn’t deny he killed Manning, but is claiming self defence. The trial was originally set to take three weeks. Brewer stabbed his friend

Manning almost two dozen times, leaving the kitchen knife in his victim’s neck. He then fled his Willoughby basement suite and met with a longtime friend, confessing what he had done. That friend called 911. Several hours later, police tracked him down and after a short police pursuit arrested him near the Greater Vancouver Zoo.

Campbell and Henderson are hosting the Glenn Ryder memorial on Sunday, April 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Rowlatt Farmstead in Campbell Valley Regional Park in south Langley. Many of Ryder’s old friends are expected to join in and there is an open invitation for the public to drop in. “Wayne (Campbell) was a friend of Glenn’s for 49 years and helped him throughout this period to to allow Glenn to carry on with his naturalist endeavors,” said Henderson. “I knew Glenn and accompanied him on many outings over the last 14 years of his life, but like many people in the biology and natural history world knew of him long before this. “Wayne and I worked on this (book) over the last year because we wanted to see Glenn’s legacy live on and to see that he receives the recognition he deserves as a remarkable individual and one of the greatest naturalists, anywhere.” Campbell is a co-founder of the Biodiversity Centre for Wildlife Studies and lead author of the fourvolume Birds of B.C. books. Henderson is a Fort Langleybased wildlife biologist and consultant and founder of Strix Environmental Consulting.

VICTORIA – The B.C. Treaty Commission and its federal and provincial financiers put on a brave show last week, celebrating a “milestone” in negotiations for a modern treaty with five Vancouver Island First Nations. A regional group representing the Songhees, Beecher Bay, T’Souke, Malahat and Snaw-Naw-As (Nanoose) First Nations have reached the “agreement in principle” stage of negotiations with Canada and B.C., after 20 years of treaty talks. This is similar to the treaty finalized in 2007 with another five-member Vancouver Island group called Maa-Nulth First Nations. The Te’mexw Treaty Association agreed to accept 1,565 hectares of provincial Crown land and $142 million in federal cash to settle its historic aboriginal title. Alas, agreement in principle is but the fourth of sixth stages. Now a platoon of lawyers takes over from the roomful of negotiators to produce the final legal text. It will be years before this treaty can be presented to the B.C. legislature and the House of Commons in Ottawa, if it ever is. These elaborate ceremonies will never be viewed the same again after the release of federal treaty advisor Doug Eyford’s report last month. The Te’mexw event seemed to have an extra urgency after Eyford’s observation that

much of this costly activity has become a job creation program for those involved. These Vancouver Island communities deserve credit for setting aside their own territorial disputes. It’s more than most have done. Eyford concluded after a long summer of meetings last year that many treaty negotiation teams in this province and across the country show no such inclination. In B.C. and elsewhere in Canada, there is a “conspicuous lack of urgency in negotiations” and “sharp divisions” between parties, most of which have been at the table for a decade or more, Eyford found. This is what has come to be known as the “aboriginal industry,” in which lawyers and consultants have a seemingly endless supply of lucrative work, much of it of questionable value. For some aboriginal participants, attending treaty meetings year after year is the best paying job they have ever had. Indeed, a common feature of the province’s dealings with aboriginal communities is that their leaders demand meetings, and then demand to be paid to attend them. This latest Vancouver Island treaty, assuming it is ever finalized, would at least in part replace the Douglas Treaties, signed by B.C.’s colonial governor James Douglas in the 1850s. These treaties around Fort
Victoria were quickly concluded if nothing else. The Beecher Bay Band was paid 45 pounds, 10 shillings for most of Sooke and another 43 pounds and change for its Metchosin territory. One of the biggest missing pieces in the latest agreement in principle is the share of federally-regulated fisheries. This has been a theme of B.C. Treaty Commission reports in recent years, as Ottawa holds up treaties for years because it is unable or unwilling to offer shares of salmon in particular. Hunting and fishing rights are acknowledged even in historic treaties, and reaffirmed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Sharing these rights while maintaining conservation of fish stocks has been more than Ottawa, and in some cases neighbouring aboriginal communities, have been able to manage. Eyford’s findings, and the B.C. government’s sudden refusal to keep staffing a B.C. Treaty Commission that shows so little progress, have sent one overdue message. If participants aren’t prepared to make real compromises and show a willingness to conclude agreements rather than drag them out, they should leave and come back when they are ready to do so. Blood found inside Davey Butorac’s prized Chevy Cavalier Z24 was the topic at the Aldergrove man’s second-degree murder trial in Supreme Court in New Westminster. Butorac is being re-tried for the murder of Sheryl Korroll, 50, of Langley, after an earlier conviction was tossed out by the B.C. Court of Appeal. RCMP Sgt. Daryl Krumbhols had been on the stand for two days taking the jury through how he examined Butorac’s Cavalier Z24 back in October 2007. Korroll’s body was found dumped at a concrete plant in Langley City on July 7, 2007. Korroll was a prostitute working and living in Langley City. She lived with her elderly parents at the time of her death. Surveillance footage at the concrete plant was seized by police. It showed the suspect vehicle to be a light-coloured Cavalier with a sunroof, roof rack and tire treads showed it had BF Goodrich tires. Homicide investigators narrowed the possibility of that kind of make, model, year of car with those requirements of roof rack and sunroof down to seven in B.C. All seven were examined by Krumbhols. Butorac’s was the last Cavalier to be examined. “For a 15-year-old vehicle the interior was very clean. There were no foreign materials or garbage. Just one bottle of hand sanitizer,” he said. Out of the seven Cavaliers Krumbhols examined, only Butorac’s was missing the grey carpeting and tire cover board in the trunk. “Underneath the tire in the wells of the metal appeared a liquid,” he noted. Krumbhols testified that he found blood droplets on the roof of the trunk, blood stains in the metal wells underneath the spare tire and blood on the passenger side cloth handle of the car. This blood was discovered using a blood re-agent which causes a chemical reaction and will glow blue where blood is indicated. He also used another blood re-agent called Hemastick testing. Butorac is using the same lawyer Richard Fowler, whom he retained for his original trial, and who successfully argued his appeal. Butorac was living with his father in their Aldergrove townhome at the time of his arrest. He was unemployed. Pathologist Dr. Craig Litwin, who did the autopsy on Korroll, concluded that it was blunt force trauma to the head that caused her death. Litwin testified on Monday that Korroll had a fractured skull and her brain had bleeding and swelling. There Sherryl Korroll were five blunt force impacts to her head. But none of those head injuries allowed the doctor to conclude what object or surface was used. Korroll also had major bruising on her face, neck and torso. Although she didn’t have many teeth, one of them was knocked out during the time of her death, he noted. She also had bitten her tongue at that time. She also had signs of asphyxiation but no marks like fingers or rope were found around her neck. There were no injuries to her anus or vagina, Litwin testified. There were indication her small, 113-pound body was dragged about 30 metres from where it was originally dumped at the concrete plant. She also had tire marks on her wrist, indicating that part of her body had been driven over by the suspect vehicle. Her organs were fine except she had sclerosis of the liver. Her toxicology report said she had crack cocaine and heroin in her body at the time of death, but not a lethal amount. She had been a heavy drug user for 20 years, said Crown counsel Wendy Dawson. Butorac’s defence lawyer asked if it was possible she could have been hit by a car and if the head injuries were sustained from that. He also asked if he thought it was plausible she fell onto the back of her head. Litwin said typically a skull won’t fracture when someone falls from a standing position. He added that her injuries weren’t consistent with being hit by a car. Fowler also asked him about signs of strangulation. Commonly the voice box is damaged, and Korroll’s was not. A DNA expert is expected to testify about the blood found in Butorac’s car which matched Korroll’s. The trial is expected to wrap up by next week.

Richie’s father, Fenwick, started the Bradner Flower Show in 1928 after arriving here from Newcastle on Tyne, England, in 1912. Fenwick had observed that conditions in Bradner were ideal for growing daffodils and started the area’s first bulb business on their homestead. Richie was the youngest of five sons born to Fenwick and Charlotte and he continued the family tradition of bulb cultivation with his wife, Audrey, at their Bradner acreage. Since retiring from his management job at Aldergrove Super Valu Richie had devoted many hours to Bradner community causes and events.
Head-on crash causes serious injuries Aldergrove Star
A 57-year-old Aldergrove woman was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a head-on three-car crash during rush hour in Aldergrove on Tuesday. Langley RCMP are seeking additional witnesses to the crash that saw one vehicle cross into oncoming traffic, causing one car to flip into a ditch. Around 4:30 p.m., a Chev Cobalt and Kia Rio were travelling east on 52 Avenue when the driver of a red Pontiac Sunfire
lost control in the sharp curve of the road where 52 Avenue turns into 272 Street. Police believe the driver of the Sunfire, a 56-year-old Aldergrove man, lost control in the curve, crossing the double solid line into oncoming traffic. The Kia that was hit flipped and went into the ditch. The driver was trapped inside and had to be freed with the Jaws of Life. ICARS (Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstruction Service) attended to assist with the investigation.
The driver of the Sunfire and the passenger in the Kia (21 year old Aldergrove resident) were taken by ground ambulance for treatment of their non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Kia, a 57 year old Aldergrove woman, was transported by Air Ambulance and remains in hospital. The driver of the Cobalt, a 31 year old Aldergrove man, suffered minor injuries and didn’t go to the hospital. The cause of the collision is still under investigation. The

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or the actions of the Sunfire prior to the collision to contact Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200 and provide additional information. Police are hoping to speak further to a woman in her 20s with long brown hair who was driving a smaller blue car. Police say she dropped her keys at the scene. She is asked to call RCMP.

Community Hall Societies Gathering and Book Launch In May 2014, the Township of Langley Heritage Advisory Committee hosted a Hall Societies Workshop for societies operating community halls in the Township. Those who attended discussed their concerns and shared information that would assist with the preparation of a sourcebook to guide future hall volunteers. A desire was expressed by those in attendance to come together again to discuss topics of common interest. The Community Halls Sourcebook is now complete. Its launch is being combined with a talk on insurance from Andrew Janzen, who will provide participants with an overview of things to know and respond to any questions. Those who are members of societies operating community halls in the Township are invited to attend this evening of information sharing, refreshments, and networking, and bring their fellow volunteers.
