Township boosts fire, police services

A Giant Bunny Cuddle

Property taxes to go up by $60, fees hiked too By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

HARRY HUNT PHOTO

The Easter Bunny visited with Alexia Bath, 2, and the Kids’ Club set at Otter Co-op on Friday, April 3.

Most homeowners in Langley Township will pay about $60 more in municipal taxes this year, following approval of a municipal budget on Monday that will raise taxes 3.67 per cent. Fees for water, sanitary sewer and solid waste services will also rise between four and five per cent. According to Township figures, the owners of a house valued at $514,000 will pay an additional $56 a year in property taxes ($4.67 more a month) and $52 more in fees for water, sewer and solid waste services ($4.33 a month) if applicable. The tax increase will pay for adding eight more firefighters and three more “frontline” RCMP officers, plus various paving and construction projects. Some members of council wanted to reduce the amount of paving and construction work as well as delay hiring some of the proposed new police and

fire to trim the tax bite, but they were in the minority. Councillor Kim Richter argued against hiking sanitary sewer and solid waste utility fees. Staff said the hikes were meant to end the effective subsidy of those services by non-user taxpayers, a position the rest of council supported. Councillor Bob Long called the fees increase a “one-time hit” to fix the anomaly. Long liked a cost-cutting option suggested by staff that would have delayed adding two of the new police officers about a year, but the rest of council disagreed. Richter and Councillors David Davis and Michelle Sparrow thought trimming paving and construction projects, another staff-presented option, might ease the hit for local taxpayers. However, most of council agreed with Mayor Jack Froese, who said the projects are needed because of the community’s rapid

growth. “It’s really just keeping up,” Froese said. Councillor Angie Quaale saw little point in postponing hiring police and firefigters, because the savings were only about $4 a year. “I think most residents would be happy [to pay that amount]” Quaale said. When Councillor Blair Whitmarsh said delaying hiring police and fire amounted to saving “a cup of Starbuck’s coffee per household per year” Richter said small increases still add up. “You can’t always bring it down to a cup of coffee,” Richter said. Councillor Petrina Arnason said “the cumulative effect of adding tax upon tax,” even small increases, can be hard for seniors on fixed incomes. Another staff-presented option would have delayed hiring four of the eight new firefighters by a year to save money, something Davis thought might have SEE: Page 3

Rifles, cocaine, cash seized in ‘856 Gang’ raid Aldergrove Star

The RCMP seizure of weapons, drugs and cash during a March 16 raid that targeted several locations in the Yukon has a strong connection to Langley. The bust is part of an ongoing effort to disrupt organized crime in Whitehorse, said Cpl. Calista MacLeod. “We’re very aware of the harm that drugs and violence do to our

communities,” she said during a news conference on Wednesday. “This investigation was focused on disrupting the suppliers who bring drugs into our communities, not just catching it after it gets here.” Reporters were invited to view the seized materials at the Whitehorse RCMP building on Wednesday afternoon. Three rifles, four hand guns, a taser, a bullet-proof vest and several

bags filled with ammunition covered a large table. There were also bags filled with Canadian currency, although MacLeod did not confirm how much. She did say the cocaine represented between 45 and 90 individual sales, if left uncut. “But usually drugs are cut with all sorts of questionable things so it could potentially be much more than that,” she said.

Some of the items were clearly related to the 856 gang, including a pair of black T-shirts with the number emblazoned on the front. The gang, originally from Langley, took its name from the prefix of phone numbers in Aldergrove. Senior members can be identified by the numbers tattooed to their inside lip. In the past 10 years it has slowly expanded to other Canadian cities, including communities in northern

British Columbia, Alberta and the Northwest Territories. MacLeod said the gang has increased its visibility and its activities in Whitehorse in the past year. “The drug trade in the North has connections to organized crime in southern Canada,” she said. “These criminal organizations have not historically had much direct presence in our communities. Mounties ‘put a dent’ in 856 Gang FROM FRONT:

operation, the 856 gang has had much more of a visible presence.” When asked by a reporter if the gang had been involved in other crimes around the city involving drugs and guns, she said “they seem to go together.” Police are still investigating a drive-by shooting in February that left a woman injured. Earlier in the month, police found a fully automatic AK-47, a sawedoff bolt-action shotgun, drugs and ammunition inside a Whitehorse-area storage locker. MacLeod said the public’s help is needed to put in a dent in the gang’s activities. “We need all Yukoners to help us bring the demand down,” she said. Police have charged 12 people with drug trafficking and weapons offences. Two men have made first appearances in territorial court: Bradley Prowal, 27, from Langley, and Lucas Radatzke, 30, from Trail. Police are still searching for Gerrit Houben-Szabo, Stewart McCarthy and Augusto Duminuco while two others facing charges are currently in custody in British Columbia on unrelated matters. Houben-Szabo, 27, was arrested at the Whitehorse airport on Feb. 9 after Whitehorse RCMP received an anony-

mous 911 call that a man in the arrivals area had a handgun tucked in his pants. When Houben-Szabo was searched, police found 11 grams of cocaine and a knife in his pocket, but no gun. He was scheduled to appear in territorial court on a charge of possession for the purposes of trafficking. Yukon RCMP conducted three raids on March 16. Two were vehicle stops, one off of the Alaska Highway at Trails North and the other on Mountain View Drive. Police also executed a search warrant on a residence in an undisclosed part of Whitehorse. Members of the Yukon RCMP Federal Investigations Unit, the Emergency Response Team and local investigators carried out the searches. At the time, RCMP said the arrests were “the culmination of a police-wide effort to address a group of offenders in our community.” Steven Bullers, 40, from Whitehorse was facing a single count of trafficking in cocaine. Jeffrey Redick, 34, and Taylor Wallace, 23, from Whitehorse as well as Jason Morgan, 33, from Abbotsford, were facing multiple charges including possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a prohibited weapon and possessing a loaded restricted firearm.

An RCMP officer in Whitehorse, Yukon, displays a collection of weapons, drugs and money that was seized during a March 16 raid in the territory’s capital city. Police say the bust targeted members of the 856 gang, which has its roots in Aldergrove, but has expanded into northern B.C., Alberta, the Yukon and Northwest Territories over the past decade.

Langley budget up FROM FRONT:

merit, but something Councillor Charlie Fox warned would create a “logistical nightmare” for the fire department. Council voted to hire all eight right away, a decision that will bring the average number of firefighters working each shift from the current level of 18 to 20, which is considered the generally accepted minimum for staffing a fire department. At 18 firefighters per shift, Langley fire trucks have been forced to operate with three- instead of four-person crews about 20 per cent of the time. The situation does not mean increased risk to the firefighters, but it can mean a longer wait before firefighters can enter a burning building because a three-man crew is too small to meet a “two in, two out” safety rule that forbids them from going in alone.

Ridings would be half-Langley, half-Abbotsford Aldergrove Star

The preliminary report of the B.C. Electoral Boundaries Commission literally divides Langley in half — and combines it with much of western Abbotsford, all the way to the Abbotsford urban area and the Huntingdon-Sumas border crossing. The current Langley provincial riding held by Mary Polak is reduced somewhat in size. Its northern boundary will be Highway 1, western boundary the City of Surrey and on the east, the boundary runs down Glover Road and includes all of Langley City and most of Brookswood. However, the two provincial ridings covering the rest of Langley not only get new names, but both become

half-Langley, half-Abbotsford ridings. The boundaries are dramatically different from those of the current Fort Langley-Aldergrove riding held by Rich Coleman. The commission justifies it this way: “Current districts around Langley are well over the provincial average (in population size), necessitating substantial changes to most of the Fraser Valley. “The proposed Langley area electoral districts are reduced in size (both geographically and in population), requiring the remaining district boundaries to shift east. Major highways are used as natural boundaries to divide the electoral districts. “The Township of Langley is split by Highway 1 north/south rather than

east/west, and the Abbotsford area electoral district boundaries follow Highway 1 and Highway 11 and strive to keep established neighbourhoods together.” The new Fort Langley-Abbotsford riding covers the area north of Highway 1 and goes east as far as Townline Road, Maclure Road and Clearbrook Road, eventually running north to the Fraser River along Glenmore Road. It includes a heavily-urbanized portion of Abbotsford near the Mount Lehman Road freeway interchange, as well as the rural areas of Bradner and Mount Lehman in Abbotsford. It includes a portion of the current Abbotsford West riding, held by Mike de Jong. The Aldergrove-Abbotsford riding is

south of Highway 1. It is located east of the Langley riding, but south of 32 and 36 Avenues, it runs as far west as the Surrey boundary. It continues east all the way to Highway 11, with its southeast corner at the Huntingdon-Sumas border crossing. It includes a portion of the current Abbotsford South riding, held by Darryl Plecas. The proposals and maps can be found at the commission’s website, www.bc-ebc.ca. Public input on the proposed changes is being accepted until midnight, May 26. Comments can be made through the website, by email to info@bc-ebc.ca or by mail to PO Box 9275, Stn. Prov Govt, Victoria B.C. V8W 9J6.

Coleman to look into proposed provincial riding split By FRANK BUCHOLTZ Aldergrove Star

Fort Langley-Aldergrove MLA Rich Coleman said Monday that he wants to take a closer look at the maps and demographics of the proposed ridings which would split most of Langley into two provincial ridings, and combine them with large portions of Abbotsford. “I’d like to see how they came up with it (the proposed boundar-

ies),” he said. “I don’t know if people in South Langley at High Point Estates want to be part of the same riding as Abbotsford,” he said. Coleman pointed out that MLAs for the proposed ridings would have to deal with two different cities, two school districts and a “whole different mix” than they do now. He said it seems more logi-

cal to take the eastern portion of Langley of his existing riding and combine it with an Abbotsford riding, rather than have two Langley ridings combined with Abbotsford. Coleman noted that it is hard for a commission to come up with ridings that are fairly balanced in population in most of B.C. However, he said that MLAs today are able to manage their

business in a far different way than they used to, with most communications being electronic in nature. He said that, in urban ridings, an extra 10,000 people or so isn’t really a big problem. He will be speaking to BC Liberal Party officials and they may make a presentation to the Electoral Boundaries Commission on the proposed changes in boundaries.

The province’s new 10-year transportation plan calls for design work to begin on a six-laned Highway 1 between Langley and Abbotsford. An expanded highway is included among the priorities for expanding freeway capacity and reliability in the Lower Mainland. A timeline for construction to begin, or finish, is not included in the plan, which was released to the public Tuesday. The plan also says “design is underway for future upgrades to Mt. Lehman Road, connecting Highway 1 to the Abbotsford Airport.” Both improvements were listed among the City of Abbotsford’s top requests when it submitted a list to the province last fall. The city’s third and fourth priorities – a railway overpass at an urban arterial road and the widening of Fraser Highway – were not mentioned in the province’s report. The chamber echoed those priorities but also called for the upgrading of 16th Avenue from the

Aerial view of the current lanes of Highway 1 in Abbotsford area. Abbotsford Airport to Highway 99, stating that it is vital to have a safe, efficient east-west connector to service the needs of the southern part of the Fraser Valley.

“The City of Abbotsford is very pleased to learn that the province has committed to initiating a design for future construction of six-laning on Highway 1 from Langley to Abbotsford as well as partnering with local communities to build transit infrastructure to provide more efficient operations and improved transit services,” said Mayor Henry Braun in a statement issued after Tuesday’s announcement. The widening of Hwy. 1 had been a priority identified by Abbotsford, Langley and Surrey and was also a policy initiative of the BC Chamber of Commerce. Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce executive director Allan Asaph was pleased that the widening of the highway was included in the plan. “We’re glad to see the province has recognized the priorities to improve transportation in the Fraser Valley,” he said, adding that the chamber will continue to lobby the province to move the project forward from the design stage to the construction phase.

In just a few short months, residents from across the Fraser Valley and beyond will be lacing up their runners and hitting the track in an effort to fight cancer. The Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is a 12-hour fundraising event – taking place in Langley on Friday, July 12– that encourages community members to come together for a common cause. According to Jennifer Schroeder, community giving co-ordinator for the CCS BC & Yukon Division, the relay is comprised of three ‘pillars.’ The first is to celebrate cancer survivors, as well as those battling cancer and their caregivers, and includes a victory lap to kick off the event. The second includes a luminary ceremony to remember loved ones who have passed away from the disease. And the third is to fight back against the disease and put an end to suffering and loss caused

Murder trial called to a halt By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

The murder trial of Jason Brewer has come to a halt, just after the accused took the stand last week. Brewer, 26, had pleaded not guilty in the stabbing death of his friend Cole Manning, 40, whose naked, bloodied body was found face down on Brewer’s bed New Year’s Eve of 2012. The trial was set to take three weeks, but now it will be coming back to court to fix a date. It’s unclear why the trial has stopped. From the beginning of Brewer’s trial, he has admitted to killing Manning.

Both were naked at the time of the attack. Brewer stabbed Manning almost two dozen times, leaving the kitchen knife in his victim’s neck. He then fled his Willoughby basement suite and met with a longtime friend, confessing what he had done. That friend called 911. Toxicology reports showed Manning had no drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of his death. Brewer also sent out several text messages before his arrest, some to his girlfriend at the time. But it took tracking Brewer’s cellphone for police to find him. They were able to track him

down nearly eight hours after the murder. Police from both Langley and Abbotsford initiated a short pursuit and had to box him in on 264 Street to make the arrest. Manning hadn’t lived in B.C. a long time. A friend of his from Alberta wrote to The Times after the murder,. saying what a kind man he was. The letter said he had moved here to get his life back in order. His family was in the courtroom and some could be seen crying while hearing some of the evidence. For such a short life, Brewer has caused a wake of destruction so far.

He deliberately caused a horrific six-vehicle crash on Highway 10, which caused permanent and devastating injuries to a man and a woman in 2009. At that time he was on probation for robbing the Langley Mac’s store. His mom posted bail but then revoked it when he assaulted her with a knife. In the head-on crash he originally pleaded guilty, because he said he was trying to commit suicide. He appealed to retract his guilty plea and won. Park going to the dogs

Founded in 1957

Owned by Black Press B.C.

Editor: Well, here we go again. The parks department has installed a drinking facility for pets in the Aldergrove Regional Park off-leash area, and in the course of work the installation crew damaged a large portion of the grass. The repair solution? Cover it with gravel again, reducing the grass areas. Further, there is a sunken area close to the fountain that has not dried up in two years also reducing the park area. The water supply to the fountain crosses the creek in the area, so hopefully the provincial Fish and Wildlife department have given the go ahead for this crossing in such a highly sensitive area. It is apparent that there was no consultation with the users of this facility, and maintenance and clean up has deteriorated exponentially. If I was one to harbour suspicions I would conclude the parks department is on a course of destruction, leading to the closing of this facility. I know not what the mandate is for this facility but destruction is ongoing. I use this park on a daily basis and if it is closed what will be my dog walking options? Terry Brenan, Aldergrove

VICTORIA – The labour situation in B.C. is showing increased signs of strain, even before a long-promised boom in heavy construction gets set to ramp up this summer. Jobs Minister Shirley Bond announced last week that B.C. is suspending its “provincial nomination” program for 90 days. This program allows the province to recommend people for federal immigration, based on skills in demand in B.C. The B.C. provincial nomination program saw its number of applications triple to 1,200 for the month of December, as the federal government cracked down on the temporary foreign worker program. Thousands of temporary foreign workers who have hit the four-year deadline are being sent home, with many of them turning to the provincial nomination track. Bond has been pleading with Ottawa to raise B.C.’s annual provincial nomination quota from 5,000 to 7,000 or more. The three-month pause is so her ministry can add staff and speed up processing time. Backlogged applicants will still be considered, and exemptions for health care workers and a northeast pilot program are being maintained. Even with the current slump in energy prices and before anticipated pipeline and liquefied natural gas proj-

ects start, the labour shortage in the northeast is near crisis. The last time I was in Dawson Creek, radio ads were offering signing bonuses for qualified truck drivers. In Fort St. John, grocery and hardware retailers have come to depend on foreign workers to keep going. While supposedly educated young people work parttime and refuse to leave the comforts of southern city life, this is the reality up north, and it’s only going to get worse. This summer, work is scheduled to start on the Site C dam on the Peace River, the most costly construction project in B.C. history. And a union vs. non-union battle reminiscent of the old Expo 86 labour wars is underway. The B.C. and Yukon Building Trades (BCYT) are demanding a project agreement that requires all workers on Site C to be paid their rates, and are warning of chaos on the huge project if they don’t get their way. BC Hydro CEO Jessica McDonald told me that’s not all they want. They are also seeking quotas for members of their unions on a project that will be a small city of 1,700 people at peak construction. BCYT executive director Tom Sigurdson says that while all sides acknowledge the need for foreign workers for Site C, he wants to control that too, working with their affiliated

unions in the United States. There will be non-union construction firms, some of them owned by aboriginal communities in the north. There will be contractors affiliated with the Christian Labour Association of Canada. The BCYT hopes to set wages and conditions for them all, and influence Ottawa’s temporary foreign worker program to boot. McDonald and Premier Christy Clark have politely told them to pound sand. Their formula would add millions in costs to the project, driving up BC Hydro rates even more than they are already rising. BC Hydro has already done dam upgrade projects using a “managed open site” model and it’s not inclined to return to the era of W.A.C. Bennett as Sigurdson demands. Sigurdson makes a valid point that when two concrete masons compare paycheques on the Site C project and one sees he’s making $5 an hour less, he won’t be happy. He will want the higher rate, and the BCYT is taking BC Hydro to court to ensure they can recruit new members on the site. It looks like a hot summer ahead. Election results unfair, due to voting system Editor: There is something inherently wrong with the first-past-the-post voting (FPTP) system when a political party, with 39 per cent of the votes, can form a majority government and make 100 per cent of the decisions. In the last federal election, 61 per cent of voters wanted someone else in government. Our voting system, since the First World War, has produced 16 majority governments with only four actually winning a majority of the popular vote. This flawed governing structure has an impact on Parliamentary decision-making and our democracy. For example, the Conservatives have extended and expanded Canada’s military mission in Iraq and Syria despite opposition from the NDP, Liberals and Greens. While these parties have fewer seats than the Conservatives, they represent far more voters, in fact, two million more voters. Added to those without much voice are Bloc Québécois supporters. They currently have two MPs in the House of Commons, despite garnering 889,788 votes in the last election. That was six per cent of all votes cast nationwide. The NDP tabled a non-binding motion last year calling on Parliament to end FPTP voting and introduce a proportional system after the next election. The motion was defeated by a vote of 166 to 110, with the Conservatives voting unanimously against it. Joining the NDP in voting for the motion were Green Party MPs, other independents, and more than half the Liberal caucus. Disappointingly, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau voted against the motion. Perhaps the October federal election will be the last unfair election and 2019 will be the first one conducted under a truly democratic electoral system. Shane Dyson, Aldergrove

Need to think ahead Editor: Re: ‘No’ voter letters: Let’s not think ahead for future generations. Let’s think of as many excuses as we can to vote no! Ands perhaps if enough of us selfish self-centred “no more of my money” Boomers vote NO for the tiny 0.5% sales tax, we can leave the following generations even more of a mess to clean up after us - on top of the $614 billion national debt, and estimated many many billions in toxic messes like the Giant Goldmine fiasco, as well as the catastrophic costs of climate change issues coming at them - more frequent and drastic weather related fire, flood, and drought damage as well as resulting ever more expensive food. On top of all this, the boomer-echo generation has been warned to prepare to pay for an exponential increase in health care costs to warehouse a “tsunami” of Alzheimer boomers. I wonder if they’ll eventually find a far less expensive final solution to relieve that problem to help them pay for all the other inherited challenges we’re leaving them? R.L. Read, Langley

Township honours extraordinary volunteers Aldergrove Star

The things people do make a great difference to the world around us. A kind gesture, helpful action, or inspiring words can have a profound impact on someone else’s life. In the Township of Langley, there are many people who go out of their way to do kind, helpful, and inspiring things for others. On April 2, those volunteers were celebrated for everything they contribute to this community. The Township held its annual Volunteer Appreciation and Awards Evening at the Langley Events Centre, where hundreds of guests of honour enjoyed dinner, entertainment, and presentations. During the event, awards for outstanding volunteer efforts were presented to a special student, adult, and couple. The Eric Flowerdew Volunteer Award recipient was Howie Vickberg. A Township of Langley resident for 40 years, Howie has been a driving force behind a number of special events, fundraisers, and service clubs. As Chair and a member of the Organizing Committee for Langley’s Relay for Life from 2005 to 2013, Howie was instrumental in helping the Relay grow into an event that has attracted more than 90 teams and up to 900 people, raising millions of dollars for the Canadian Cancer Society. As Director of Protocol for the 2014 Langley BC Seniors Games, Howie helped stage an event that attracted the most participants in the Game’s 27-year history, and called on the services of more than 1,000 volunteers. A Fort Langley resident himself, Howie has helped carry on the village’s traditions as Chair of the Fort Langley May Day Parade Celebrations Committee, a member of the Fort Langley Enhancement Society, and a member and two-term

president of the Fort Langley Lions Club. He organized and hosted the Fort Langley Lions Seniors Dinner for ten years and raised more than $65,000 for those in need through the Fort Langley Roctober Dance. His efforts can also be felt locally as a judge with Langley Has Talent and a driver with Operation Red Nose, and as far away as Melaque, Mexico, where Howie and a friend collected soccer equipment and school supplies for a school there. Howie, who served two terms as a Township of Langley Councillor from 2002 to 2008, is currently a member of the Aldergrove Rotary Club, a Director of the Langley Animal Protection Society, and collects donations for the Salvation Army’s Kettle Campaign every Christmas. The Eric Flowerdew Volunteer Award is presented annually to recognize contributions that volunteers make to the community. It honours an individual’s outstanding dedication to the promotion of quality of life through creative, cultural, physical, or social pursuits, and to the enhancement of the Township of Langley’s community spirit. Eric Flowerdew was a school trustee, municipal councillor, and member of the Langley Hospital Board. As Parks and Recreation Commissioner, he was instrumental in establishing the initial Parks and Recreation budget and in hiring Pete Swensson as the Township’s first Recreation Director. His commitment to volunteerism was unfailing, and in 1974 the Flowerdew family honoured his name with the award. Nominees for the 2014 Eric Flowerdew Award were Brenda Singbeil, Cheryl Young, Gordon Zacher, Howie Vickberg, Les Clay, Russ Simpson and Sharon WellsAckermans. The Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award recipient was Sumara Stroshein. An International Baccalaureate Diploma Student at R.E. Mountain Secondary, Sumara’s scores in this rigorous academic program are so high that she can skip her first year of university and enroll directly into her second year of post-secondary classes. Now in Grade 12, she has maintained straight As throughout high school and has a current Grade Point Average of 94%. The founding member and president of Mountain’s award-winning Green Team, Sumara spearheaded the annual Langley Green Team Conference and serves on Langley Township’s Youth Advisory Committee. She volunteers with the Quest Food Exchange and has participated in the Model United Nations and Red Cross Global Issues Symposium For Youth. A member of Langley Community Music School’s Fiddle Group, she has busked to

fundraise for World Vision, and in Grade 10, Sumara took seven weeks off school to volunteer in Nepal and India. As a member and coach of the Langley Gymnastics Competitive Team, she has won four All Around Provincial Titles and took First All Around in the 2013 Canadian Western Championships. Sumara has been named Most Dedicated Athlete, Most Improved Athlete, and Athlete of the Year in gymnastics and won the Amanda Jack Memorial Award for Most Inspirational Gymnast. Also a cross country athlete, Sumara places in Langley District’s top-3 each year. The Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award is given to a Langley student in Grade 11 or 12, from one of the area’s secondary schools, in recognition of his or her athletic, scholastic, and community efforts. Personal qualities such as leadership, work ethic, and initiative play a major role in the evaluation process. Pete Swensson was an internationally recognized athlete and photographer, and an outstanding

Fast-track fundraising moving forward at North Otter, grand opening at Wix-Brown The North Otter PAC has ‘kicked it into high gear’ to raise their goal of $83,000 by June to begin construction of a new play structure after reaching $53,000 with just a short time to go. The current structure was closed for a time over safety concerns until a parent volunteer and fabricator Curtis Main was able to make some custom repairs as a temporary solution. Since then fundraising efforts have included movie nights, a pub night, a craft fair and, most recently, a scratch ticket program that involved the students. Meanwhile at Wix-Brown, students were excited to open their new playground (pictured) in time for some nice spring

weather. Students, parents, the school community and generous sponsors joined together to fund the playground project and are thanked officially on a sign that also reads “the act of play is a crucial component in the successful growth of the brain, body and intellect.”

Sumara Stroshein, an International Baccalaureate student at R.E. Mountain Secondary School in grade 12, was awarded the Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award by Township Mayor Jack Froese. Sumara has maintained at 94% GPA, allowing her to enter university directly into her second

Langley Players’ spring production, Escape from Happiness, is a gritty but entertaining dark comedy by awardwinning Canadian playwright George F. Walker. It is directed by Helen Embury and produced by Leslie Gaudette. Walker’s plays have been performed throughout the world. He is one of Canada’s most-decorated playwrights, with two Governor-General’s Performing Arts Awards for Drama — for Criminals in Love and Nothing Sacred (Walker’s adaptation of Ivan Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons). In 2009, he received a third Governor-General’s award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement, Canada’s highest honour in the performing arts. In 2006, Walker was named a member of the Order of Canada. “I was drawn to this play because of the very real, endearing characters developed by the playwright,” says director Helen Embury. “As they struggle against ‘the world out there,’ they are not always successful. And yet as we empathize with their predicaments, we can’t help but laugh at their off-the-wall logic.” Cast members are Jacq Ainsworth, Joanna Williams, Philip Hale, Mike Busswood, Shane Rochon, Mahara Sinclaire, Judith Betzler, Brian Johnston, Chris Carver and Rebecca Strom. Team AMBA starts new ball season By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

The new baseball season has begun for Aldergrove Minor Baseball Association. Several teams have started their regular season and many more are about to begin this week. As in past years, AMBA will be holding an Opening Day Ceremony on April 11, at 11 a.m. at Aldergrove Athletic Park. Dignitaries from the Township of Langley will help AMBA members celebrate the start of the season. All teams from all divisions will gather along the first base side of Devon’s Diamond (premier lit field) by 10:45 a.m. Players will be in uniform for the event. Simpson named one of WolfPack’s top athletes Aldergrove Star

Baseball player Luc Simpson of Aldergrove was among those recognized as the Athletes of the Year by the Thompson Rivers University Wolf Pack. The Cliff Neufeld Leadership Athletes of the Year were Luc Simpson (outfield, Aldergrove, baseball) and Taiysa Worsfold (guard, Kamloops, basketball). The award goes to athletes who not only excel in their sport but also lead by example with their teammates and the community. Simpson’s coach Ray Chadwick said about his captain: “As a coach, you hope your athletes are tal-

ented enough to continue their sport of choice at the highest level possible. If not, you hope that the athlete you’ve watched grow over the course of his time with you has shown that he has matured and will be an asset to our society. Both he and Alex both definitely have done that. If Luc isn’t fortunate enough to play at the next level, whatever he chooses as his profession or career there is no doubt that the work ethic and attitude toward life he has shown will be very successful.” Simpson spearheaded all of the baseball team’s community work along with encouraging other varsity athletes at TRU to

do the same. He was also involved with promoting the TRU athletic program and their activities on social media. Worsfold is a “Big Sister” through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program in Kamloops. She coordinated an ‘organ donation’ awareness night at one of the Wolf Pack basketball games this year and helped volunteer at the New Life Mission. She also coaches young basketball players individually and worked at a number of local skills clinics throughout the year. “Taiysa is a model student athlete,” says her head coach Scott Reeves. “She leads our team in scoring, maintains a straight A average and is our leader in the community. We are very proud of Taiysa.” Other nominees were Sydney Goward (Williams Lake, cheerleading), Brett Parker (Langley, basketball), Logan Geisbrecht (Williams Lake, cheerleading), Ryan Pidhirniak (Coquitlam, cross country), Alesha Miller (Vernon, cross country), and Brianne Rauch (Kimberley, volleyball).

The Aldergrove United Red Devils are in the draw with Sparta and Dynamo for the Keith Millar Cup. Both Langley United squads have qualified for the BC Soccer adult Provincial Cup playoffs which run throughout the month of April. The teams are competing for the Keith Millar Cup. Langley United Sparta men’s Division 2 soccer team captured the President’s Cup on Saturday night with a decisive 5-1 victory over Westcoast FC United at Port Moody’s Town Centre. The President’s Cup victory was one of two accomplishments by Sparta over the weekend as on Sunday, they captured the Fraser Valley Soccer League Div. 2 title with a 2-0 victory over the North Delta Titans. Sparta finished the regular season with a record of 16-3-3, which actually tied them with another Langley United squad, Dynamo for top spot. But Sparta earned the title by virtue of having a greater goal differential at +45. Dynamo finished at +29. Dynamo had advanced to the President’s Cup semifinal round before losing 2-0 to Westcoast FC United. Sparta had defeated the Aldergrove United Red Devils 4-0 in their semifinal game. Other locals teams competing in the various Cup championships are the Langley Hurricanes (men’s A Premier Cup) and Fraser Valley Action in the women’s A Premier Cup. Preliminary round play begins the weekend of April 10, 11 and 12, with the quarter-finals, semifinals and finals the following weekends.

Fundraisers send kids to camp By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

Aberdeen Elementary School’s fundraising car wash will be held on Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at By-Pass Auto Sales, 27441 Fraser Highway, Aldergrove (across from Safeway). “Our class is raising money to pay for the Grade 7 Camp, June 8-10 at Camp Luther, Grade 7 BBQ, June 18, and the Grade 6 field trip, May 15 to BC Hydro Dam at Hayward Lake,” said Ray

Goerke, grade 6/7 teacher. The car wash will be by donation. “The kids have been raising money all year long to pay for our trips and event. We have had popcorn sales, a fun fair, and a hot dog sale,” said Goerke. “I have had excellent parent support this year and the money raised has gone a long way in easing the financial burden for parents. Like most schools we also have kids who, without fundraising, wouldn’t be able to afford

camp. The kids have all contributed greatly by working hard to earn the money. For me, earning the money is a crucial lesson they need to learn. My job is to supply them the opportunity to learn that lesson.” By-Pass Auto Sales has been on board with the school from day one. Owner John Judd has been one of their biggest supporters from the very beginning. The students run the car wash at his lot, where Judd supplies the hoses water and space. As

well, for every car the students wash in his lot he donates $10 to the cause. Students sell hot dogs and pop at the event as well, and Judd supplies the barbecue and propane. This year Judd will run a sale in conjunction with the car wash in order to bring in more customers for the students. Aberdeen Elementary School, located at Fraser Highway and Bradner Road, has been serving the West Abbotsford area of Aldergrove for many decades.
