Now Mother Nature is unrolling her green carpet and her colours are exploding in trees and gardens and filling us with joy. We all have our own ways to make the most of the return to warmer weather. Some of us start by sorting through our closets, a way to fall into step with this season of renewal and transformation. Stores are bursting with the new spring fashions: rainwear, unlined boots, and trendy outfits seduce us with their lightweight materials. And we sure like to let more vibrant tones take the place of those gloomy winter colours. When spring fever takes hold, it’s so hard to resist! Owners of convertibles waste little time in folding back the roofs of their cars and savouring their newfound freedom, hair flying in the wind. Others head for car dealerships in search of their dream car for exciting summer driving. But most of us just make the most of the warm weather by enjoying the fresh air as we polish our vehicles to a beautiful gleam. No more winter hibernation!
Spring fever also hits the restaurants, as patios open and sidewalk cafés fill up at noon. How great it feels to sip a drink in the great outdoors rather than sitting inside with a cup of coffee and salt-stained snow boots. Even menus change to reflect the arrival of spring, as chefs revel in combining fresh herbs and exotic flavours. Growing delicious vegetables Would you like to eat some deliciously fresh vegetables this summer, grown in your own garden? Now’s the time to get to work. In April, or as soon as the soil is no longer waterlogged, roll up your sleeves and get out your shovel and garden fork. Preparing the soil is a crucial step. Loosen the soil to aerate it and carefully remove any weeds. If you want to produce big, beautiful vegetables, be sure to add compost and organic fertilizer, such as a seaweed fertiliz-
er or bone meal. One thing is sure: improving the quality of the soil in your garden will guarantee a better harvest. To sow seeds or plant seedlings? It’s your decision, but if you choose plants you’ll have to wait until all danger of ground frost has passed before starting your vegetable garden, or use a cold frame to protect them. If you decide to sow seeds directly outdoors, you’ll find lots of seeds that thrive in cool weather at your garden centre. But beware: seeds have to be sown at the right moment according to the hardiness zone you live in. Here again, you should only sow your seeds when all risk of ground frost is passed. If your patience is being put to the test, why not start your seeds indoors? During April you can start preparing your garden with all kinds of seeds: tomatoes, peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, and the list goes on. For a garden brimming with vegetables, be sure to water and weed throughout the summer months. If you get busy now, you can look forward to crunching into your very first carrot in only a few short weeks!

Get in gear with a new bike Criss-crossing the countryside on roads and bike paths is an appealing idea, now that the longer summer days are fast approaching. Not only is cycling a fun activity that gets you out in the fresh air and seeing the world around you, it’s also a great way to get fit. Many types of bikes are available on the market. So, before making a choice, you’d better ask yourself a few questions about how you’re planning on using it. In the city, urban bikes are ideal, as they feature an upright riding position that allows you better visibility. Hybrid bikes are great for exploring bicycle paths. They are designed to carry transport bags and have several gears to facilitate climbing hills. There is also a wide range of specialized bicycles, designed for the cycling fanatics out there. Those include mountain bikes, downhill bikes, cyclocross bikes, and road bikes. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice from a bike dealer or sports equipment expert about an appropriate bike for you. Expect him or her to ask you about the way you’ll use the bike, and then about the right size of frame, seat, and handlebars.
Spruce up your home Winter is almost over and the cold weather has probably left its mark all over your home, inside and out. Now’s the time to get out your tools!
