FEDERAL POLITICS

Lunney quits Conservatives MP since 2000 said he believes religious freedoms are being stifled JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

Citing a stifling of religious freedom in senior-level politics, Nanaimo-Alberni MP James Lunney quit the Conservative caucus on Tuesday. “I am withdrawing from the CPC caucus voluntarily; the decision is entirely my own,” Lunney said through a news release. “Given the circling trolls, I do not intend to entangle the most multi-racial, multicultural and multi-faith caucus in parliamentary history in my decision to defend my beliefs.” Lunney’s riding includes the Parksville Qualicum Beach region. He said he has asked the Speaker of the House of Commons to assign him a seat as an independent MP. Lunney announced last year he would not be seeking re-election this year. Government whip John Duncan — who is seeking election this year in the new CourLUNNEY tenay-Alberni riding that includes Parksville Qualicum Beach — told The NEWS he doesn’t believe Lunney’s move changes anything for him during the coming election campaign. “I don’t run my politics based on social issues, per se,” Duncan said from Ottawa. “I’m a very pragmatic, practical guy who just wants to get things done.” Duncan, who has been living in Qualicum Beach since January of 2014, didn’t directly address Lunney’s comments about a stifling of views at the senior political level. “As caucus members, we are no different than people who work with any organization,” he said. Lunney, 63, was first elected to the House of Commons in 2000 as a Canadian Alliance candidate. He was re-elected as a member of the Conservative Party of Canada in the 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2011 federal elections. The full text of Lunney’s announcement, sent to The NEWS by email, follows: “Leaders of the faith community were in Ottawa on March 25 to express their alarm at increasing and unprecedented attempts to stifle freedom of religion, conscience and expression in Canada (http://bit. ly/1ErDN48).” See FREEDOM OF RELIGION, page A9

Part of a multi-city national rally, more than 70 protesters in Parksville took to the streets to criticize the federal government for slashing health care dollars. The protest comes on the one year anniversary of the end of the Canada Health accord, which many are calling to be restored.

Criticizing the federal government for slashing public health care dollars, about 70 protesters took to the streets of Parksville on Tuesday. The midday protest marked the first anniversary of the end of Canada’s Health Accord, a 10-year-agreement between the federal government and provinces to provide stable, federal funding for health care and setting national standards for wait times, home care, prescription drugs and team-based primary care. Instead of renewing the Health Accord, the government is promising to increase health transfers, but according to the Canadian Health Coalition “this lack of federal leadership in health care will lead to 14 different health care systems — access will depend on where you live and your ability to pay.” “Medicare is gradually being eradicated,” Mayworks spokesperson Bill Friesen told The NEWS during the protest at the corner of

Despard Avenue and Alberni Highway. “Each year something else is taken away.” Friesen said in an effort to combat ongoing cuts to health care, he’s going to vote for change in the upcoming federal election, which he deemed “the most important election in Canada.” Oceanside Coalition’s Rick Sullivan echoed Friesen’s remarks. “We get change at the ballot box in this country — that’s the only answer,” he said. “I’m just old enough to remember the days when we didn’t have Medicare,” Sullivan said. “People in my generation see health care as a defining attribute of Canadian citizenship… This isn’t a country I recognize anymore.” According to a news release issued by Hospital Employees’ Union (HEU), the protest is part of a multi-city, national day of action drawing attention to $36 billion in reductions in federal health care transfers over the next decade.

Tandem skydivers will drop in between other performances from planes piloted by locals Roger Yorke in his Second World War T-28, Ken Fyffe in his Stearman, Jim Hannibal and Dave Rogers in their Glasair Super 2 RG, Ken Heron and Jim Green in a homebuilt RV and Connor, who will also be busy emceeing the event. Super Dave and Roger York will even take a few lucky spectators for flights in their aerobatic planes. Things kick off at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast and there will be hot dogs and hamburgers starting at 11 a.m. along with various concessions throughout the day. An opening ceremony at 10 a.m. will include various dignitaries and skydivers with a couple of large flags. Festivities will run through the day until 4 p.m. Numerous out-of-town planes will join the action, complete with

helicopter rides, displays by the 893 Squadron Air Cadets with a glider on static display and Vancouver Island Virtual Airline on hand with a flight simulator for the kids. The Parksville District and Qualicum Flyers will put on a 30-minute show with radio control planes and will have impressive models on display all day. The 442 Rescue Squadron will attend with whatever search and rescue craft are available on the day, possibly including the giant Buffalo plane or Cormorant helicopter. “We book all these thrilling special planes,” Connor chuckled, “but a lot of people are actually happy just to watch the KD Air and Orca Air flights,” which continue scheduled flights throughout the packed day. After three years, the Qualicum Beach Airshow is back July 11 with more aerobatic performers and unique displays than ever. “The object is specifically to have a great airshow of course, but also to highlight the importance of the Qualicum Beach Airport,” said Paul Connor, a member of the hosting Parksville Qualicum Aero Club executive. So they will feature things like an air ambulance, air search and rescue, logging helicopters and Angel Flight B.C. “I’m a volunteer pilot with Angel Flights which fly patients to radiation and chemotherapy appointments in Vancouver and Victoria,” Connor said, explaining that immune compromised people shouldn’t spend that much time on public ferries and other forms of travel. They fly people to the main hospitals from all the the remote corners of the province, free of charge and will be featured at this year’s event. Forward House is hosting two new programs targeting young adults age 19 to 30. The first is a Coffee House Social, which will be held weekly on Wednesday nights at Coyote’s Coffee in Parksville from 6:30 to 8 p.m. “We’re finding that a lot of people in that age range don’t come into Forward House so we’re trying to meet them in the community,” explained Forward House education and out-

Dudek said young adults come into Forward House but often feel out of place given the demographic is around age 50. For more information contact 250-954-0785 or visit www.forwardhouse.com. Since two other politicians in Ontario and Alberta were targeted during the same period, it is clear that any politician or candidate of faith is going to be subjected to the same public scrutiny in coming elections.” “In a society normally proud of embracing difference, the role of the media and partisan politics in inciting social bigotry and intolerance should be questioned. I will seek an opportunity to address the House in defence of my beliefs and the concerns of my faith community.” “I am withdrawing from the CPC caucus voluntarily; the

decision is entirely my own. Given the circling trolls, I do not intend to entangle the most multi-racial, multicultural and multi-faith caucus in parliamentary history in my decision to defend my beliefs. The chipper will be in your area April 13 through April 16 to pick up tree and hedge trimmings. Please place only the following at the front property line before 8 am prior to April 13: 1. Branches with a maximum diameter of 6 inches (15 cm), stacked with the larger end of the branch or trunk facing the roadway. 2. Woody shrub material, piled for ease of access by the chipping crew. Rocks, stumps and construction waste may cause injury to the chipper operators and must NOT be included in piles. Please note that due to safety issues, materials such as pampas grass and clematis and wisteria vines cannot be chipped. These, along with along with other compostable garden debris, leaves, and grass clippings may be taken to the Church Road Transfer Station. Piles containing these items will not be removed by the chipping crew. Piles must be limited to a size of 5 feet wide by 3 feet high, and only one pile per residence will be removed by the chipping crew. Please do not combine piles from multiple households as it is more difficult and time consuming for the chipping crew to take apart large piles for chipping than it is for them to handle smaller piles. When placing your chipping pile, please be sure not obstruct your property’s City water connection box in the event access is required for maintenance. If you have questions, please call Engineering and Operations Department at 250 248-5412.

he Town of Qualicum Beach has a lot of work to do if it is going to live up to the growth provisions of its Official Community Plan. A build-out of 12,000 residents. It’s a number we thought would be shuffled to the back and forgotten with this new council, but Mayor Teunis Westbroek reintroduced it to the conversation in a story Tuesday about population figures. B.C. Statistics reported the population of Qualicum Beach declined 0.5 per cent in 2014 to 8,500. “I consider the population statistics for last year as a minor fluctuation in our long-term plan which will see a build out to approximately 12,000,” said the mayor. A closer look at the numbers and some very conservative projections on deaths and births suggest the town will have to start aggressively attracting people, jobs and development if it is to reach the number quoted from the OCP by Westbroek. Let’s say the long-term plan has an end game of 60 years. Two generations sounds long-term enough. On average, according to B.C. Vital Statistics, more than twice the amount of people die each year than there are births in the District 69 area. That rate is higher in Qualicum Beach — there are suggestions it’s 6:1 — but let’s go with 2:1 to be conservative. Continuing that conservative trend, let’s say Qualicum Beach loses 50 people a year through the birth/deaths ratio. The town currently has 8,500 people. It needs 3,500 to reach the build-out of 12,000. In 60 years, the town will lose 3,000 people using the conservative births/deaths ratio we’ve chosen. That means Qualicum Beach needs to attract 6,500 people to reach build out in 60 years. Let’s get even more conservative, and simplify the math, and call it 6,000. Qualicum Beach needs to attract 100 new people to town every year for the next 60 years to reach the OCP’s buildout number. For this four-year council term alone, that’s 400 people, likely somewhere around 200 homes. Does anyone believe this council will be agreeable to the construction of 200 more living spaces in the next four years? Extensive public consultation and adherence to the letter of the OCP were the buzzwords that swept this council into office. It will be interesting to see if this council will adhere to the OCP’s build-out number and, if so, how it plans to accomplish that goal. — Editorial by John Harding

misleading proVincial budgets

Jack Mintz, the chair of the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary, wrote an article recently on how provinces fudge their budgets. And the press are buying it wholesale. The Quebec budget and the B.C. budget are hailed as balanced. Alberta is said to be balanced by using some reserve funds to bridge the gap. But these are not the full budgets of those provinces. They are the operating budgets only. And all provincial budgets involve both operating and capital budgets. In B.C.’s case, the operating part has a surplus of $879 million. But the capital is $9.8 billion, all borrowed. So, in actual fact, there is a deficit of (rounding) $9 billion. In other words, B.C. is spending $9 billion in 2015 more than it is taking in revenues. Our name says it all! Eat Fresh Urban Market

Canada is not a Christian Country In a letter to the editor (The NEWS, March 17) it was stated that Canada was a Christian nation. Canada is a democracy, and all forms of religion, including both atheism and agnosticism, can be freely practised here. There are more than a dozen forms of Christian religion recognized in Canada. They include the Red Cross, which is known for providing aid to victims of natural or man-made disaster. Most groups have their own rites and dogmas, but all believe in a Creator with whom mankind has some type of relationship. Science is based on facts and on occasions these contradict points of dogma. If the facts are sufficiently persuasive it is the dogma which has to change. For example, during the Middle Ages you could be burned alive for questioning any part of the Bible. Recently, the Pope indicated that the Catholic Church may be prepared to accept scientific explanations of both homosexuality and evolution. There are two ongoing science studies which may bear on religious dogmas. The fossil record shows that evolution is a fact, but does not explain how life began. The indications are that the earliest life consisted of simple single-celled animals, and these are not preserved as fossils. Scientists already have data to show that these animals could have formed naturally, and in the near future may be able to produce synthetic forms of life. Recent astronomical observations have determined that many stars have planets, and that at least some have Earth-like orbits and significant amounts of water. It follows that life probably developed quite widely in the universe. There is a saying that “there are no atheists in fox-holes.” Scientists tend to feel the same way when they consider the awesome complexity of the Earth and of space. Science can generally analyze the “how” but never the “why” of natural phenomena. Such questions involve faith, and are best left to religions. Jim DrummonD Qualicum Beach See more LeTTerS, page A15

Thank you RCMP A heartfelt thank-you to RCMP Cpl. Mike Elston and volunteer Tim Schewe for looking out for my family’s safety. Schewe has been a community builder for traffic and road safety for more years than I can remember and Elston is a leader both in the community and out in the field and innovative as heck. Thank-you to you two fellas. I do genuinely appreciate that your efforts keep my family safe. Well done. Caroline Waters Parksville

Thanks CuCkoos Sometimes the course of events leaves you amazed at people’s generosity and professionalism. I approached Cuckoos in Trattoria and

We Clean Dusty Blinds!

Pizzeria in Coombs for help with a fundraiser for our school, Qualicum Beach School of Dance. The idea was an upscale “beer and burger night.” We decided to try a “wine and pasta night.” We agreed on a price that was extremely generous on Cuckoos’ part. I thought what we were getting was a simple meal and basic night out. What we got however, exceeded everyone’s expectations. The food was amazing, with such variety and quality you thought you were in a five star hotel dinning room. The staff were incredible. Cuckoos didn’t have to go above and beyond. It was a simple low-cost fundraiser but the staff made it into an amazing, successful evening. I just want to take the time to thank them and Chef Fausto. It’s people and businesses like this that make our community great.

column

Bad habit of bad hearing When I was little, my mom and dad worried about me. Not just for the usual stuff — skinned knees and failed history tests — but also because I tended to misconstrue the things people said. One afternoon while we were waiting for my piano teacher, John Bond, to arrive I asked my mom a question. “Mom, I don’t understand that new song on the radio by Johnny Rivers.” “What don’t you understand?” “How can anyone be a Secret Asian Man? And why would they punish him by giving him a number and taking away his name?” Mom gave me the same look she By Ray Smit had the day I told everyone that Richard Nixon was the leader of the Ontario Liberal Party and we’d learned about him at school. Just for the record it was Robert Nixon — but that’s just a slight difference and hardly worth mentioning. Mom quickly corrected me, “It’s Secret Agent Man, Ray. You know like 007 James Bond?” “My music teacher, Mr. Bond, is a secret agent?, Cool.” “No, Ray. The song is about secret agents like James Bond. Your teacher’s name is John Bond.” I must admit my penchant for mishearing things didn’t improve in my teens. I tended to get lyrics wrong, which proved embarrassing given my penchant for singing them as loud as possible. It must have been edifying for the neighbours to know that Paul McCartney’s hit Uncle Albert went, “Little, Liddell, be a gypsy get around. Get your feet up off the ground, Liddell, Liddell get around.” It dovetailed with the life story of runner Eric Liddell as portrayed in the movie Chariots of Fire. However, the actual lyrics were, “Live a little, be a gypsy, get around.” So it wasn’t about the great Olympian after all, which makes sense in retrospect given the fact that the song was released a decade before the movie.

PQ

Mind you, I’m not the only one who messes up song lyrics. A friend at church told me that some people in England thought Elton John’s smash hit Bennie and the Jets was actually called A Penny for the Gents. I wish I could say that I’ve outgrown my proclivity for mishearing words but the truth is that it’s worse than ever. A few weeks ago, Joanne and I made a date for a beach walk. When I met her, she said, “Guess what? I brought two otters!” “You brought two otters? That’s amazing! Where did you find them? Are you going to put them back in the ocean? Do they bite?” She looked at me in disbelief. “I said that I brought two waters!” “Oh,” I replied sheepishly. “Where would I get two otters?” she asked in amazement. Thankfully, she dropped the subject. Later, as we were walking, she said, “I took the coolest picture of a washroom close up. Want to see it?” A washroom? Now the shoe was on the other foot! It was time for me to have a little fun in return. “You take pictures of washrooms?” I asked wittily, “Are you planning an outhouse for the back yard?” She said nothing as she handed me her camera. It was a picture of a mushroom. It made me think of Mark Twain’s famous aphorism, “It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt.” In case you’re wondering, yes I have had my hearing checked and it’s relatively normal. At least I think that’s what the audiologist said. I couldn’t quite make out what he was saying. Mind you, wouldn’t it be an amazing world if your piano teacher actually was a secret agent and your girlfriend really did have two otters? — Ray Smit is the author of The Trouble with Tapioca now available at Amazon.com. Fifteen potential buyers for one of Qualicum Beach’s two proposed cohousing developments attended a site tour Saturday afternoon rallying excitement for a new housing concept and way of life. “Cohousing is a custom planned neighbourhood designed by future residents,” Yonas Jongkind explained to The NEWS Saturday from the west end of Laburnum Road, where the development is slated to go if it draws enough interest and investment. Jongkind is a project starter with Livewell Cohousing’s Aldermuir location and he’s lived in two cohousing developments outside Qualicum Beach. “It’s a progressive idea in today’s world,” he admits, noting the cohousing idea originated in Denmark in the late 1960s. The Canadian Cohousing Network describes cohousing neighbourhoods as a return to the best of small-town communities, a traditional village, a close-knit neighbourhood and an altogether new response to social, economic and environmental challenges of the 21st century. There are 19 cohousing developments under construction or complete at this time in British Columbia. Six are on Vancouver Island, two in Qualicum Beach. Basically, those interested in becoming part of a cohousing neighbourhood come together and communally make planning and design decisions ultimately sharing the responsibility in managing and maintaining their jointly owned community. While the project is in its infancy and de-

velopers haven’t purchased land yet, Jongkind said interest in the project is budding. The 19.9-acre site in question is privately owned and will need to be rezoned prior to construction. Livewell has already submitted rezoning applications to the Town of Qualicum Beach and is hoping to have a successful third reading in May, close to the time they will purchase land if all goes as planned. French Creek resident Jan Wilson attended last weekend’s site tour. “It’s an awesome idea on so many levels,” Wilson said. “Anybody from any age group can benefit from living in a community.” Wilson said a person can live in a regular strata development without ever meeting their neighbours, leading to loneliness and isolation. She said she’s interested in cohousing because it boasts a sense of community where genuine relationships can foster — and also because the site is in “a serene, rural setting.” The cost of housing is yet to be determined but Jongkind estimated a one-bedroom home may go for around $250,000. The site is looking to host 28 homes composed of 10 duplexes, two fourplexes and a few single family homes. Livewell president Gary Morrison told The NEWS construction could start as early as 2016 and be complete by the spring of 2017. Down the road, a second cohousing development is underway for a 16.2 hectare lot also along Laburnum Road near Qualicum Beach Elementary, spearheaded by the Valterra Village Cohousing Planning Group. Morrison said the two groups, while they have a common cohousing goal, are going in “different directions.” To their credit, he said, Valterra has a bold vision for sustainability and a stronger focus on farming whereas the Aldermuir group is more interested in “cocktails in the gazebo.” For more information visit www.livewellcohousing.ca

Parksville Home Hardware celebrates it’s 30th year Parksville Home Hardware is marking a major milestone this month. April 1985 saw the hardware store located at 142 Morison Ave., Parksville, change owners, and three decades later Parksville Home Hardware is still a thriving member of the community. 30 years in business is enough to celebrate in itself, and in a community that has seen many businesses come and go, it is a testament on how to stay successful. Together with family and staff, owners Bill and Carol Ormiston are celebrating that achievement with a birthday celebration on April 4. In the days leading up to the anniversary the Ormistons have been reflecting on the past 30 years in business, and Bill agreed that hard work is just one of the many elements that have served them over the years. “Having good staff helping you run a successful business is definitely one of the key components,” he acknowledged. Bill is proud of the fact that they provide excellent work experience for youth in the community. “Our high school students, past and present, have contributed significantly; many were employed for two or more years. In 30 years we have hired a lot of high school students from Ballenas and a few from KSS as well. I think that it is important to be able to teach younger people the life skills that are needed for employment opportunities when they do graduate from high school.” Bill added their senior employees have also been an asset to their personnel. “From senior citizens who want to be active in the work force, to people in their middle ages … we have a wide range of ages and work skills that we have hired. It has provided a very dynamic team.” con’t on page A20

Bill pointed out that the banner they have under Home Hardware Stores Ltd. of Canada has also contributed to their longevity. “Home Hardware is 100 per cent Canadian and is very well recognized as a major Canadian retailer who celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2014. The company is owned by close to 1,100 independent dealers from every corner of Canada and in the case of the Ormistons what started out as a family run business continues to this day. “It started with my mom and dad, myself, and two staff. We are still a family business, but we have grown and now have six full time and nine part time employees,” Bill said. Bill’s parents retired in 1995 selling the business to Bill and their son-in-law Chris Mohr. The store continues to have a small town feel and when asked about some of the more memorable customers Bill chuckled and agreed there have been a few characters that have walked through their doors. “Oh definitely … we have had some colourful ones. A lot of great people have brought laughter to our store and have really embraced the staff.” More than just a retail business, Parksville Home Hardware is a cornerstone of the community and is active in helping charities. Bill said Home Hardware supports the Special Olympics and the Sick Kids Foundation as well as Tree Canada which resulted in some new trees for Parksville in 2012. Support is also given to local projects aimed at keeping Parksville a thriving tourism destination. “The sand castle competition is a major annual event in Parksville ,which we have proudly supported since the beginning.” The Parksville Beach Festival which puts on the sand sculpting competition and exhi-

bition relies on Parksville Home Hardware for some of its important sand castle making ingredients such as white glue. Over 30 gallons of it is diluted and used as a preservative on the sand sculptures. Parksville Home Hardware is an enthusiastic supporter of Oceanside sports teams including baseball, soccer and high school football to name a few. The location of the store is conveniently located just up from the beach and Bill said because of that they offer all the necessary items required to have fun in the sand. “ Housewares is our number one department, with everything you need to have a well equipped kitchen found here.” Bill pointed out that customers are provided with an extensive selection of merchandise to select from. “ In addition to Home’s exclusive line of Kuraidori kitchenware products, we are able to further enhance our selection through the use of other suppliers.” “ Our number two department is lawn and garden. People who retire here find enjoyment in getting out in their yard and we have been able to supply them with everything that goes with that.” “ Not to be overlooked, our paint, plumbing, electrical and hardware departments offer a great selection of merchandise and if we don’t have an item, we will do our best to get it for you.” They really like to use local products where possible ie: the Broom Extractigator, Bokashi composting products, Celebrity Linens, Old Country Design, Mason Bee Central, Baskets & Things and Metropolitan Chef to name a few. As they approach their 30 year anniversary, the Ormistons not only look back with pride, they look forward to serving the community in the years to come.

Tessa Jackson

For the past five years, I have volunteered at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre. I am very passionate about animals, and in the future I see myself being a wildlife veterinarian working at a wildlife recovery centre. The things that motivate me most are the future and what it holds and also my dreams and goals. One of my favourite quotes is “If you can dream it, you can do it” by Walt Disney.

Mikael Olefs

Walt Disney’s quote “If you can dream it, you can do it” has motivated me to go for my dream of getting a doctorate in Biotechnology and making the “giant leap for mankind” in genetics by being the first person to clone another human being. With hard work, determination, and support I am sure that I can give this dream a happy ending.

NANOOSE BAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Students write their own song AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

Students and parents got to enjoy the results of a songwriting project at Nanoose Bay Elementary School recently. Through an Artstarts grant for Artists in the Classroom, two classes spent months writing a song based on their Social Studies lessons. Grade 4 and 5 students in rooms 10 and 4 worked with local singer-songwriters, Merisa and Emily Tibbo and the band Trinitude to write a catchy tune called Let’s Vote, with the kicker at the end, “when we’re 18, we’re gonna vote!” Room 10 worked on a project called ‘Chronicling the History and Exploration of Canada in Song,’ learning about the song writing process and pulling the main ideas

out of their lessons for the song’s theme. Room 4 focused on the Canadian government and how to put a song together and both classes learned how to work together, explained co-ordinating teacher Mary Gardner. “Both classes have learned to be a team, to share ideas freely, to respect the ideas of others and to collaborate and agree on which ideas will end up in the song,” she said by e-mail. She said combining arts and academia leads to new kinds of learning “and deepens understanding of that topic,” pointing out “the kids are incredibly engaged.” In order to receive the AIC grants, both projects were adjudicated on a merit basis AuREN RuviNSkY pHOTO by a provincial jury made up of educators Rooms 4 and 10 students at Nanoose Bay Elementary performed their song and professional artists. Let’s Vote, with the band Trinitude, for the whole school recently.

Nineteen students from School District 69’s Rivers Ocean and Mountain School (ROAMS) are back from Manning Park where they spent four days getting hands on training in resort related work. “Resort staff has been extremely supportive of ROAMS students coming up for work experience for the last two years,” said ROAMS teacher Darin Carmichael of their time at the Manning Park Resort School. Accompanied by the Vancouver Island School Ski Patrol Program (VISSPP), students spent long days on the ski hill shadowing patrol, operations, rentals and snow school staff. “And students had just completed their gru-

Big power may be back but not to worry, the environmentally minded cars were never far from sight. The Vancouver show was chosen to announce the new Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s (AJAC) Green Car of the Year Award. This year’s winner is the Kia Soul Electric Vehicle, providing a practical design with full electric capabilities. Also on display was the Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell vehicle, capable of running on hydrogen, with no tailpipe emission, only water vapour. The hottest trend in the market today is the small crossover vehicles that come in many shapes and sizes, and from all over the world. The Fiat 500X is an example of the latest from Europe, allowing a young family practical, thrifty transportation in a stylish Italian design. Built on the same platform as the new Jeep Renegade, the 500X has more panache and curb appeal. The 2015 Vancouver uver International Auto Show marked the 95th year of this annual event and it was the biggest ggest and boldest yet.

Making a great deal better... every day!

Kelowna resident Rick Kelly thinks Tesla has missed the boat with its Model S design, so he’s created his own sporty coupe version of the electric car. Well, actually, the car-loving artist has created a digital version of what he calls a Model S 2+2-coupe concept. Kelly explained: “The only ‘sporty’ electric vehicle on the market right now is the BMW i8 – I’ve seen one here in Kelowna and it is spectacular, albeit out of most people’s price range ($145,000). Tesla has the performance in its electric Model S to be entertaining as a driver’s car. The Model S is one of the nicestlooking cars on the road, but it has FOUR doors – that precludes it from being ‘sporty’ in my book.” You can check out Kelly’s other creations at his website: http://automotiveart.shawwebspace.ca, his blog at http://digital-automotive-art.blogspot.ca and he even has a fun iBook called Digital Automotive Art on iTunes. Check it out. What do you think about Kelly’s digital re-creation of the $114,700 Tesla?

The rain is relentless and it’s cold. But the miserable liquid sunshine couldn’t dampen the spirits of the group of nationwide journalists who gathered at the Jack Pool Plaza at the Vancouver Convention Centre to kick off the 2015 Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s (AJAC) annual EcoRun. The EcoRun is an event that shows off a variety of eco-friendly vehicles, which include pure electrics, plug-in and conventional hybrids, hydrogen fuel cells, diesel-fuelled powertrains and highly efficient gasoline options. Its purpose is to help inform consumers of these alternative options, as well as providing accurate road testing fuel economy numbers. There’s no size limit on the vehicle either. Heck, we had a Ford F-150 in the pack, along with the midsize Chevrolet Colorado. The objective was to test a variety of vehicles – regardless of shape or size – and show that

you don’t have to buy an all-electric vehicle to be eco conscious. But speaking of all-electric vehicles, the Nissan LEAF was the first of six vehicles I’d drive over the two-day test drive. This year, we ventured onto Vancouver Island through Horseshoe Bay, Nanaimo, Duncan, and Victoria and back through Tsawwassen. With a full charge on the LEAF’s battery, I wasn’t having any range anxiety. The trip to the ferry, and then to our first stop totalled a little more than 70 kilometres. I started with 143 km on my “tank” and ended up with 63km. As for real world figures, I used up about 80 km of range for a 70.1km trip. I did have the heated steering wheel and seat on, and had the heating on as well because, as I mentioned, it wasn’t warm! And there were a few hills on the way; all of which would deplete the battery more quickly.

Our first stop on the Island was at the Cowichan Regional Visitors Centre in Duncan. If you’re looking for things to do in the area, this is the place where you’ll get lots of great ideas. For example, those who love cheese will find that The Creamery at Cheese Pointe Farm has some incredibly delicious offerings. Or those who want some candied salmon look no further than Mad Dog Crabs. And as a tea lover, TeaFarm, which is Canada’s only tea farm and offers multiple blends of flavourful creations. I could have stayed all day but duty called. From there, our journey took us to Western Speedway in Victoria for a dynamic handling course. That part of EcoRun was compliments of the Chevrolet Colorado. The front-wheel drive truck with a six-speed manual transmission did the job and did it well. From the speedway, our drive took us into downtown Victoria and the VW Golf TDI was my fiery chariot. The next day’s activities would also keep us busy, with

2015 AJAC Eco-Run: Putting consumers first a press conference at the BC Legislature, then to Swartz Bay, through Steveston, BC for a fascinating tour of its history, and then finally back home. I’d have the opportunity to test the Ford Focus with the 1.0L engine, the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the EcoDiesel, and to finish up the day in style, I’d have the Acura RLX Sport Hybrid. While the AJAC EcoRun wasn’t about crowning winners and losers – although, we were all vying for the coveted Green Jersey award at the end for most efficient driver – the real winners are the consumers. Not everyone is able to find a place in their home for an electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, but there are gasoline and diesel-powered options that can easily fit into your lifestyle, no matter what kind of driving you do. For a full list of participating vehicles, and to see photos and data, visit www.ajac.ca and click on the EcoRun tab.

Sprinter is built for BC resource sector By Rob Rothwell

rgrothwell@telus.net British Columbia’s Monashee Mountains are renowned for their steep north faces and massive oldgrowth cedars. While its rugged terrain is largely inaccessible by road, logging activities have given rise to a network of steep, roughly cut access roads, which the spring thaw recently converted to deep quagmires of confidence-sucking mud, rock, and debris. What fool would attempt to drive a large commercial-style van up these routes of impending doom? Me for one. Mercedes-Benz invited me to explore the capabilities of their Sprinter vans available with four-wheel-drive, or in Mercedes-Benz parlance: 4ETS. In the world of commercial high-roof vans, the Sprinter is the only one in Canada fit with traction at all four corners. Known technically as 4-wheel Electronic Traction System, 4ETS is an option on V6 diesel-powered Sprinters, including the dual rear-wheel long wheelbase 3500 model. Expect to pay in the range of $6,000 for the feature, which can be paired with low-range gearing and downhill descent control for those seeking to maximize the Sprinter’s off-road fortitude. 4ETS is driver-activated as needed via a dash-mounted switch. When the grit of four-wheeldrive isn’t necessary, the setup enables optimal fuel-economy by returning the vehicle to rear-wheeldrive, thereby reducing fuel-robbing mechanical drag. While active, 4ETS splits torque 35/65 front-torear. This ratio doesn’t change though traction-control and stability-related programs remain active to improve grip and increase safety. These programs can be disabled should the driver require the ability to spin the wheels in an effort to unglue a stuck Sprinter.

Keeping one’s right boot deep into the Sprinter’s turbocharged throttle enabled its four wheels, clad in winter tires, to keep digging for traction while spitting out congealed mud and deleterious earthen material in an effort to supply forward propulsion. And it worked. We battled ruts so deep that the entire underside of the van banged and shuddered viciously as rocks and buried tree limbs from former logging operations did their best to impede progress. The ride-height of 4ETS-equipped Sprinters is increased by 75 mm (3-in) at the rear and 100 mm

(4-in) at the front, which improves the vehicle’s approach and departure angles while also imparting a 24-inch wading depth. Interestingly, I didn’t find the additional rideheight detrimental to highway driving. The Sprinter felt exceptionally well anchored to the road and remarkably secure on its winter rubber, even at highspeed on backroads of broken, patchy pavement. As the only game in town when it comes to fourwheel-drive commercial vans, Mercedes-Benz is keen to roll its high-traction Sprinter into industries such as mining, logging, construction, and any other

to have external clients and they have included many well-known companies such as Microsoft, Starbucks, HP, Embraer and Siemens. McGill, who started with the company as an intern, has spent the past two decades dividing her time between design studios in Los Angeles and Munich. More recently she has also been spending time in China at a new design studio that DesignworksUSA has opened in Shanghai. Working with external clients, McGill has developed colour strategies for consumer, medical and aviation industries. Consumer products include Nilfisk vacuum cleaners, HP printers and Varian Medical Systems. Aviation strategies include Embraer and Pilatus. She also designed a top-selling carpet collection for Lees Carpet. Her first assignment at DesignworksUSA, in 1991, was colour and trim for the BMW E2 electric car, which was shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show. For the 2003 re-launch of the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars brand, McGill used her aviation-honed expertise of luxury materials to conceive the interior and exterior colours, materials and finishes for the Phantom. Her work for MINI debuted at the 2005 Frankfurt Auto Show with the MINI Concept Car and was integral to the development of

work environment located off the beaten path – and that’s huge in a resource-based province like B.C. The long-chassis Sprinter 3500 with dual rear wheels could easily serve as a rolling workshop for trades’ people needing access to work camps where four-wheel-drive wherewithal is essential. Mercedes-Benz will also equip the passenger version of their Sprinter with 4ETS. Ski resorts and lodges, such as the Monashee Lodge, will undoubtedly appreciate the expanded capability. The recreational market is another niche ripe for off-road performance.

BMW gets personal with your car

There is a growing trend for more exclusivity and personalization in the high-end car market. Owning a prestige nameplate is just the beginning for some wealthy buyers who crave a closer, more personal connection with the vehicle they drive. BMW now offers these buyers an opportunity to consult directly with its designers, at DesignworksUSA, to help them achieve the one-of-a-kind creation they crave, directly from the factory. “It’s been said that 80 per cent of consumer purchase choices are based on colour. I like to go with that, as it makes me feel more secure in my job,” said Alexandra “Sandy” McGill, Lead Designer of Color, Materials and Finish (CMF) at DesignworksUSA. She was in Vancouver for the opening day of the Vancouver International Auto Show. DesignworksUSA is a fully owned subsidiary of the BMW group of companies. It serves as a creative collaborator and has played a key role in shaping the appearance and personality of MINI and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, in addition to modern BMW. An interesting corporate arrangement also allows DesignworksUSA

the 2007 MINI Coupe colours and trim. Available through a BMW dealer, the Individual Collection program gives a buyer access to an exclusive line of paints, materials and colour choices. Inspired by the citrine gemstone, the metallic paint finishes offered use a fine Xiralic pigmentation in colours ranging from gold dust through to a dark olive black. Individual Collection interiors offer a selection of fine-grain Merino leathers with inlaid piping and contrasting stitching. These come in a spectrum of colours that ranges from Opal White through to Cashmere, Gold Brown or Black. The wood trim used is taken from a single log, to ensure a high degree of uniformity. Individual Manufaktur allows a BMW buyer to create a truly bespoke automobile, and it’s where McGill and her team at DesignworksUSA get actively involved. They will work with a client and can provide personal colour selection, including two-tone compositions. A buyer may also decide to add more leather or even a personal monogram inlay, which can be added to head restraints and other elements. The wide selection of trim materials available includes precious metals, such as sterling silver.

Local talent brings famous poet to life

Play took eight years to research, write and rehearse Jessica skelton reporter@pqbnews.com

After nearly a decade of work, Caleb Williamson will finally premiere his biopic play about poet John Keats this weekend. “He always sat with me in the back of my head,” said Williamson, who added that he was captivated by the poet’s life more than his work. Williamson first started thinking about the famous English Romantic poet in high school. However, it wasn’t until after the Kwalikum Secondary School grad attended the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School eight years ago that he decided to finally bring Keats back to life. Over the next several years, Williamson researched the young poet while working a job in construction. He read dozens of books and utilized holiday trips to Europe to investigate Keats’ stomping grounds. Then, about five years ago, Williamson approached Ann Gates of ECHO Players and Thin Ice Theatre to direct the play. Gates readily agreed and soon began working with the playwright to edit down his initial work into a more active and succinct two-hour play in two acts. “We started with a novel’s worth of work,” said Gates. “He (Williamson) did an amazing, huge amount of research.” In the end, Williamson said around 15-20 per cent of the play is derived from Keats’ own words as taken from poetry

and letters. The remainder was written with the goal that an audience would not be able to tell where the famous poet stops and Williamson begins. All put together, the play, Keats, tells the story of the young poet’s dramatic life until his death at age 25. Williamson also hopes he captures some of Keats spirit — which he described as full of the determination to keep pursuing a passion instead of being beaten down by life — in the play. “It’s an opportunity for Keats to look back on important moments in his life and it affirms his life,” said Gates of the show. “I hope people don’t go away feeling sad for him (the poet).” The production will be predominately a one-man play, with Williamson taking on the role of Keats. Gates also said that Nayana Mongeau will appear onstage as the young poet’s love, Fanny Brawne. Behind the scenes, Gordon May will act as sound designer and consulting director and Shannon Dillon will have the role of stage manager. While it’s a small cast and crew, Gates doesn’t think this will affect the quality of the play. “The difference isn’t the number of people,” she said. “It’s the amount of work you put in.” Keats will premiere at the McMillian Arts Centre on April 4, and the show will also run April 5, 9-11 and 18-19. All shows are at 7 p.m. at the MAC. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students, and are available at Mulberry

Bush Bookstore in Qualicum Beach and Cranky Dog in Parksville. After Keats has its run at the MAC, Thin Ice Theatre will also take the show to the Theatre B.C. North Island Zone

Drama Festival in Port Alberni this May. Williamson also said that he hopes the play will see the stage again over the summer and is planning to enter the play into fringe festivals next year.

Annie Lou takes time to play solo again Singer-songwriter recently nominated for music award Jessica skelton reporter@pqbnews.com

Anne Louise Genest is changing it up again. The singer-songwriter, who is better known by her stage name Annie Lou, is taking a break from singing with her band to perform a solo concert in Qualicum Beach this week. “Focusing back on solo is, in a way, a

business decision,” said Genest. “It’s another way to be out there.” In other words, Genest said she is looking at the music industry as a trade. While she is interested in expressing herself artistically, the long-time musician — who describes her sound as “firmly rooted folk” with modern acoustic influences — is also keen to make “a viable living” while she’s at it. While taking the time for a solo gig this week is one way Genest can achieve

these goals, she has taken several other avenues over the years. She started off with some solo work, but more recently produced music with her band. Also billed as Annie Lou, the group includes Canadian acoustic champs Andrew Collins, Max Heineman and Sarah Hamilton. Annie Lou’s debut self-titled album was nominated for a 2010 Juno award and a 2010 Western Canadian Music award, while the sophomore release

Grandma’s Rules for Drinking garnered two 2012 Canadian Folk Music award nominations for English songwriter of the year and solo artist of the year. Their third and latest album, Tried and True, has also earned some acclaim. According to a news release from the Qualicum Acoustic Café, where Genest will play on tomorrow, the album charted in the top five of all Canadian artists on the International Folk DJ Charts. Genest also recently found out Tried and True was nominated for best bluegrass album in the 14th Independent Music Awards. “I was surprised and delighted,” said Genest of the nomination from the international organization. Aside from making music with the members of Annie Lou, Genest has also recently spent some time collaborating with other acoustic musicians like Chris Coole, Archie Pateman and Kim Barlow. Now, as a relatively new addition to the local scene (she only moved from the Yukon to Vancouver Island three years ago), Genese is also searching out more chances to play music locally and taking the opportunity to connect with other musicians through teaching. “There’s a lot of different ways and formats to share my music,” Genest said That doesn’t mean she’s finished with her

Arnold Fredrick Shaver July 14, 1923 – March 27, 2015

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Angeline; his beloved son, Brett Lear; sisters, Kay and Betty; brothers, Frankie, Dwayne, and Wayne. He is survived by his 8 children, Violet, Milo, Wanda, Dean, Lorrie, Leila, Kayla, Darrin and their respective spouses; 31 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren, sister, Wilma and brother Wilfred. Arnold will be lovingly remembered by all for his famous quote “Make It Work. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday, April 6, 2015 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1069 Smithers Road, in Parksville, BC. Laurette Dimmick

(Mom, Granny, Great Granny) lived 105 interesting years, dying peacefully March 28 at Eagle Park Health Care Facility. Always a gentle lady, generous and caring, she is loved by her family, Reed, Finn, Lucia, Amon, Nicki, Graeme, Conor, Leah, Kevin, Judy and Jim, and her relatives who visited often, Gale, George and family, Beth, Dale, and Lenora. She will be missed by relatives in Ontario; Freda, Jill, and Janice, and by many friends. Her longevity, she once explained, was due to learning from the past, not living there, always being curious about the future, and, perhaps, a love of crispy bacon and chicken wings! She adored her grandsons’ families and was always interested in their activities. Her family is very thankful for the exemplary compassion of caregivers at Eagle Park Health Care Facility. Laurette wished there be no service for her passing. She requested her ashes be given to the sea as were those of two of her great grandchildren. Those who care to make a donation in her memory please do so to the Oceanside Hospice Society.

Donald Grant Alexander June 7, 1934 – March 14, 2015

It is with heavy heart I announce the passing of my dear husband. Don was a very kind, happy person and loved meeting new people. Growing up in Toronto, Don became a King Scout and his passion was fixing cars and racing. Don was a longtime resident and business owner in Barrie, Ontario. Once retired, motorhome travel became his greatest enjoyment and how we arrived in beautiful Parksville. Don’s easy smile and laughter will be missed. I would like to thank the staff at Arrowsmith Lodge for all their care and compassion over this last year. In lieu of flowers, please consider honouring Don’s memory with a donation in his name to your favourite charity. We’re right in our own backyard and we know what the course has to offer.” “Qualicum Memorial is a great course that stays very dry, even when it pours rain, so we’re going to have some good conditions for our first tournament rain or shine, hopefully just sunshine though.”

Parksville Royals winding up for regular season T yson Taylor

sports@pqbnews.com

The Quality Foods Parksville Royals are looking forward to the start of the regular baseball season in just a few weeks. The B.C. Premier League season kicks off for the Royals April 12 with a game against the Victoria Eagles in Victoria. The following weekend the Royals will have their home opener (April 18) against the Abbotsford Cardinals and then host the Victoria

Mariners on April 19. In total, the Royals have six of their first nine games in April on their home Inouye-Wallace Field. “We’re pretty lucky to start the season off that way,” head coach Dave Wallace said. “But we need to make sure that we can also get off to a good start with all those home games. It’s a good chance for us to really get our feet under us to start the

season off and we’ll be looking to get some early wins under our belt.” The wins were hard to come by last season for the Royals, who had a record of 13 wins and 33 losses. With the majority of last season’s roster back, Wallace is optimistic. “We’ve got a good chunk of returnees from last season,” Wallace said. “We’re an older team, that’s for sure. Last season

we had a bit of a hard time in games and things are going to be different for us this season. All of the players are coming back a year older, with that much more experience and they’ve gotten bigger and stronger too.” With just 17 players this season, each will get more playing time. “In a way, it’s nice for us,” Wallace said. “We don’t have to worry about finding game time

for so many kids and I think that the players really like that. Of course, there’s the downside where if we have to deal with injuries, we don’t have the numbers to fill in the spots. So we hope that we can stay relatively healthy over the course of the season. It’ll be nice for our younger players on the team to be able to get a good number of innings in, that’s for sure.” See RoyalS have, page A39

Young Ballenas student has been named to provincial team

Whaler will play on B.C. team Viedas takes a loss representing the province in various tournaments throughout the spring and summer.” In Grade 10 his talents showed through this season, which the Whalers lost in a quadruple overtime game with a chance at the playoffs on the line. “Livi is a real good player,” Wilson said. “I remember when (head coach) Kevin McMillen was talking about him before our season even started, telling me about how good this kid was and I was sort of hesitant being that he was in Grade 10. But Livi showed us he had what it took to be a part of that team.”

The Ballenas Whalers will be represented on the U-16 Boys Provincial Basketball team by Grade 10 student Liviano Canil. Canil, who made the senior Whalers team despite his age, is a choice that makes “a lot of sense” to Whalers coach Taylor Wilson. And Canil is excited to play with the B.C. team. “It felt great to be selected to the provincial team,” Canil said. “It’s very encouraging to see my hard work and dedication being recognized. It might not have been the result that Marco “Machete” Viedas was looking for in his return to the octagon, but he isn’t wasting time getting back to training after taking a unanimous decision loss at Battlefield Fight League 35. Taking on Bryan “The Wrecking Ball” Gall, who had the same record, Viedas was back in the octagon for the first time in over a year after suffering his first MMA loss. “It was a tough loss,” Viedas said. “He did a good job

Canil impressed his coaches through the season, proving that it was a good move to make him a part of the senior team, even though he was still classified as a junior player. According to Wilson, he sees Canil as someone that “has what it takes to play at the next level.” “He definitely has what it takes,” Wilson said. “He’s got good size for a kid in Grade 10 and he’s still growing. He’s a good, raw athlete and has some pretty good talent. I think that if he keeps on working at it, fine tuning a few aspects of his game, he’ll be able to play basket-

Livewell Cohousing Developments Ltd. is pleased to announce plans to develop a cohousing neighbourhood in Qualicum Beach. This project requires a zoning amendment and subdivision of a large residential property at 560/570 Laburnum Road, Qualicum Beach, in order to accommodate development. The project will be composed of three separate cluster developments: cohousing strata homes, traditional single family lots, and pocket strata homes. We value your input and would love to hear your feedback on the upcoming project. You are cordially invited to attend this event and speak with our team members.

Wallace will look to players like Errington’s Liam Ballance, Ethan Fox (Comox), Owen Kelly (Nanaimo), Colton Tuka (Courtenay) and Jaret Knowles (Campbell River) to help lead the team this season. “We’ll have strong pitching, defense and hitting,” Wallace said. “Our corner infielders (Ballance and Knowles) will be solid, as will pitchers Owen Kelly and Colton Tuka. We’ve got good strength right through our roster and I’m really looking forward to seeing what this season brings.”
