New leads have emerged in 2010 murder case
RCMP continue to investigate double homicide as the five year anniversary approaches RCMP
The RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit and the Cranbrook RCMP detachment have stepped up the investigation into the homicides of Jeffery Taylor and Leanne MacFarlane. The senseless double murder occurred on May 29, 2010 at a rural residence approximately 20 kilometres east of Cranbrook. “This was a brutal and cowardly act of violence in what was determined to be a case of mistaken identity,” said Staff Sgt. Dave Dubnyk. Investigators have interviewed hundreds of witnesses including several who indicated that
two males were seen running/walking away from the crime scene along a section of Hwy 3 that lead from the couple’s residence. As the result of tireless investigative efforts, police have been successful in moving the investigation forward. At the outset of the investigation, the forensic examination of the crime scene yielded a vast amount of evidence and now, as a result of advancements in forensic science, new and very viable leads have surfaced, explained Staff Sgt. Dubnyk. These new leads have provided investigators with resurgence in the
investigation with definitive direction in the search for Jeff and Leanne’s killers. The investigation has never stopped but now several more police officers have been added creating a large dedicated team of investigators to follow up new leads. This has included interviewing several new witnesses, as well as re-interviewing some of the original people with whom the police spoke. The investigative team has established a dedicated Tip Line and urge people to call 1-877987-8477 with any information they may have about this crime.

Two-tier leisure fees end April 1 ARNE PETRYSHEN
The new leisure services fee structure should take effect on April 1. Council passed a resolution earlier this month to eliminate the two-tier system and if it is adopted on March 31, the new fee structure will begin on the first of April. On Monday, March 23, council passed the first three readings of the Leisure Services Fees and Charges Bylaw. The new bylaw will abolish the two-tier fee structure and came about after a unanimous
vote at the March 4 Special Council meeting. The move means Area C residents, as well as others beyond the area will pay the same fees as Cranbrook residents for all Leisure Services activities. Those include fees at the Aquatic Centre, as well as programs administered through Leisure Services. The adjustments will result in a decrease in revenue of approximately $35,000 to $40,000 annually.

BC Treaty Commission future in doubt Tom Fletcher Black Press
In its current form, the B.C. Treaty Commission would need a century to settle all the aboriginal land claims that are before it, Premier Christy Clark said Wednesday. Taking questions for the first time about the sudden cancellation of former cabinet minister George Abbott’s appointment to lead the commission, Clark said she doesn’t know yet if the organization will continue. She emphasized that having only 50 out of 200 B.C. First Nations involved, and painfully slow progress with those, is not enough. “There have been some results, but four treaties in 22 years for $600 million is not enough result,” Clark said. “We have to be able to move faster, and we have to find a way to include more First Nations in the the process.” Word of Abbott’s rejection came out late last week, with surprise and disappointment from outgoing chief commissioner Sophie Pierre and commissioners representing the other two parties it represents, the federal government and B.C.’s First Nations Summit.
NDP leader John Horgan said the B.C. government’s sudden decision to leave a key position vacant is a violation of trust with aboriginal communities and Ottawa, which provides the cash for treaty settlements. B.C. provides Crown land once claimed territories are defined. “I don’t disagree with those who suggest the treaty process can be revitalized,” Horgan said. “You don’t do it by blowing it up without talking to your partners.” Pierre and others have expressed their own frustrations with the slow pace of progress, particularly from Ottawa. Treaty deals involving a share of salmon runs were put on hold for years while the federal government held an inquiry into the state of Fraser River sockeye runs. Pierre has also called for forgiveness of the debt piled up by First Nations as negotiations drag on. Money to continue talks is borrowed against future cash settlements for resources extracted from aboriginal territories, leaving the parties with little left to invest in communities.

How Rugby came to the East Kootenay Part I of II: Peter Moody - A Sporting Life Tony Dransfeld
This year is the 50th anniversary of rugby in the East Kootenay. The first game was an all-Kimberley match played in 1965. When Cranbrook players came on board a few years later, the Barbarians were born. Today, a half century on, the Rocky Mountain Rogues carry on the rugby tradition in Kimberley and Cranbrook, playing East and West Kootenay teams in the Kootenay Rugby Union, and competing for the provincial Saratoga Cup. Next week in the Townsman, two of those 1965 players, Peter Moody and Brian McKenzie, write about the genesis of rugby in the East Kootenay. Today I want to focus on Peter’s own story as a life-long athlete. I first met Peter Moody at the Kimberley Post Office in the fall of 1964. He was in the company of Struan Robertson, then recreation director at McDougall Hall, a long-gone Townsite landmark once the heart of much of Kimberley’s leisure life. These two were among
the best-conditioned athletes in Kimberley at the time. Born in London’s teeming East End seven years before the outbreak of World War II, Peter Moody and his two brothers were evacuated to the countryside, along with many thousands of other English children, to escape the German bombing runs that targeted London The family was reunited in 1945 and in the peace that followed, Pete’s sporting life began. He played soccer at school and basketball at the local YMCA, then was introduced to rugby at 18 when he joined the Royal Air Force. After two years with the RAF, Pete found work as assistant camp leader at a YMCA boys’ camp in the English Lake District. It was his first experience of mountains and hiking them. He began his career in education at the University of London’s Westminster Teacher Training College, where he captained the soccer team, helped establish the college’s first basketball team, played water

This was followed by a year at Leeds University’s Carnegie College of Physical Education, where he took up rugby again. Now a teacher, Pete got his first job teaching Phys-Ed at a boys’ school in east London. He was playing basketball again and rallied his
teammates to form a competitive club playing in England’s national league. As player-coach, he led the team to the All-England final in 1958. After four years of teaching in the UK, Peter attended a “job fair” at Canada House in London. Canada was recruiting teachers and Mr. Moody landed a job at Aberdeen Junior Sec-
ondary in Winnipeg. Coached by Pete, the school’s gymnastics team won the city-wide championship that year. In 1961, Pete, his first wife Wendy and their young family arrived in Kimberley where he had been hired to teach boys’ Phys-Ed at McKim Junior High School. And that was the historic year that rugby came to the East Kootenay. But

more on that next week. In 1967 Pete headed back to school as a student himself, acquiring a Masters Degree in Physical Education at Washington State University and eventually a doctorate from the University of Alberta. He taught for a year at Eastern Oregon College then joined the School of PE at UBC’s Faculty of Education. After 20
years based in Vancouver, he came “home” to Kimberley, teaching at the College of the Rockies and in UVic’s long-distance teacher education program before finally retiring at the age of 74. Through the decades Pete’s passion for sports and physical activity of all sorts has never waned. Today, at the age of 82, he cross country skis in winter, rides his mountain bike as soon as the snow’s gone, hunts in the fall and hikes in the summer. And he’s passed those genes on to his three children and seven grandchildren who are into just about everything from martial arts to swimming to soccer and rugby. His 15-year-old granddaughter Kiana, for instance, just got her level one ski instructor’s certification and has been teaching tiny tots this winter at Mont Cascades outside Ottawa. Granddaughter Jessie, 14, is a competitive gymnast at the national level, training at the Phoenix club in Vancouver. Daughter Jane, 50, was still playing competitive soccer until a knee injury sidelined her last year.

The city noted that $20,000 of that is reflected in Sports Pass purchases, while the remaining $1520,000 reflects the loss of additional fees non-residents paid for service. City staff expects that over time, an increase in usage of the programs by non-residents will result in a gradual offset of some of those initial budgetary impacts. City staff gave some history on the subject: “When Western Financial Place was initially built, the City had proposed through the Regional District of East Kootenay, a request for residents of Area C to contribute funding to the facility. A referendum to contribute was conducted and defeated, leading the City to implement the “two-tier” rate structure. More recently, in June 2010, Area C residents were asked to contribute $1.25 million over 15 years, to the City of Cranbrook for the upgrades to the Memorial Arena. A vote in favour would have resulted in the termination of the “two-tier” rate structure, however the referendum was very narrowly defeated.” City staff have worked with 2015 field users to delay their fee payment until after the fee structure changes.

The Middle East and the politics of looted books While researching his master’s thesis on the concept of archives, Gish Amit continued to trip over a series of mysterious documents. While sifting through the archives of the National Library of Israel in 2007, Amit found a cache of papers mentioning something called “the book collection operation” and another one discussing a stand-off between looters and librarians. Both series of documents referred to the letters “AP”— but it was unclear what any of these things meant. It took him a few more weeks of digging, but Amit had found an unknown and astonishing piece of history. In May of 1948, with the establishment of the State of Israel, 750,000 thousand Palestinians either fled or were forced out of their homes. Empty houses encouraged large-scale looting, which the Israel Defence Forces were sent to halt. Noticing that many homes were being looted of books, armed forces escorted librarians from the National Library to rescue as many books as they could before they disappeared altogether. By the end of the year, the librarians had collected 30,000 titles. Unfortunately they had lost much more. Amit uncovered one report in which a librarian wrote with regret that “we at the National Library couldn’t save all the books on time.” The same librarian did later note that through their efforts “a large share from the libraries of the Arab writers and scholars is now in a safe place.” Keeping books out of the wrong hands was very much on everyone’s minds. Mike Selby earlier, in the city of Offenbach, 2 million books were assembled together — titles the Nazis had removed from their Jewish owners. This collection caused a large debate, as two organizations wanted the books: one in New York and the other in Israel. There was no question as to returning the books to its original owners. Unlike the books themselves, they had all been incinerated. This very fact hung over Gish Amit as he continued to uncover more and more documents. He soon found the “AP” referred to a spine label. He was then able to located 6,000 books with the designated AP stamped on them amongst the library’s holdings (the other books that were rescued were weeded out of the collection, most being out-of-date textbooks). Amit also discovered that AP referred to “abandon property” — a designation given by the

library to rescued books. Amit’s next step was to find out what the library had done in the past 65 years to return the books to their rightful owners. Absolutely nothing. A shift in thought appears to have occurred at the library soon after the books were rescued. It is a horrible and disgusting one, a belief that the library was somehow beyond reproach, and “that the Palestinians themselves could not understand their [the books’] value.” And unlike books taken from Holocaust victims, from 1967 until the present day living owners of the books have shown up asking for their property to be returned. All this gets mixed up with the politics of the Middle East, making rational discussion almost impossible with various government and officials on both sides. For now, it does not appear as the remaining 6,000 books will be returned to the original owners owners or their heirs anytime soon. On the other side, all 6,000 books are extensively recorded and catalogued, can be viewed by anyone, and are constantly used by Arab scholars. Remember Michael Meinig? He’s the Kimberley man who promised to climb three mountains in three days for three different charities to celebrate his 50th birthday. Well, he’s done it, and raised over $5000 while doing so. Meinig climbed three mountains in the Banff, Canmore area, Mt. Lady Macdonald, Mt. Rundle and Ha Ling Peak. The charities benefitting from his efforts are Cranbrook Shelter, Children’s Wish and Good Samaritan.

ext Friday, Christians from different churches in Cranbrook will join together for the eleventh annual Good Friday CrossWalk. It’s a spiritual pilgrimage through the streets of downtown Cranbrook. This is worship in the streets! We pray for our city, its leaders and all who live here. We pray for our nation and for the world. The CrossWalk begins at 10 a.m. on Good Friday at the Clock Tower. From there, we will carry a cross through the downtown core of the city and stop at several locations. At each stop, we read a passage from Scripture and we pray together. Our prayers will embrace the city and its people, leaders and governments around the world, our legal system, our health care system, caregivers of all sorts and those who need to be surrounded with prayer and compassion and grace. We pray for the victims and perpetrators of war and hatred. We pray for all whose lives need to be held up in the light of God’s love. We end with prayers for the churches and other faith groups, all who seek to live with peace and compassion in the world. We pray that we might learn to live and work together with compassion for the good of all people. Why do we do this? We do it as a faithful witness to the grace and compassion of God. We hold up our city in prayer so that God’s love might surround and embrace us all with healing grace. We journey together, bearing witness to Jesus who comes to our world with
a different vision of what a whole and healthy life looks like. God’s vision for the world is of a community of compassion and companionship. It’s a world where power resides in service and self–giving love, not in might and coercion. It’s a vision of healing and restoration so that all people may live together in peace with justice. For faithful Christians, the cross is about an alternative vision of what life could be like. Jesus didn’t die on the cross primarily so that we could get to heaven. RathRev. Yme er, he was executed by the state because his vision of Woensdregt life was so radically different that he was seen as a threat. In the cross, we see the depth of Jesus’ passion for a world based on a radical equality among all people. We see the power of God’s love, which holds us up even in the midst of the most painful suffering. In our CrossWalk, in our prayers, we give voice to that vision. We don’t ask God to come crashing into our world to set everything right. Rather, as we pray, we make a fresh commitment to live by the gospel values of compassion, peace, justice and wholeness. We make a public act of witness that we walk with Jesus, that we share that same vision of a life made whole and new. Canadian theologian Douglas John Hall talks about prayer as “learning to see the world through God’s eyes.” As we pray, we learn to view the world with compassion and grace. We learn to seek justice for all
people. We seek to live on this earth as responsible and faithful people who care for one another and who care for the earth as well. CrossWalking is one way in which we renew our commitment to walk in the way of Jesus. It is a way that leads to a cross, since walking this path faithfully will bring us into conflict with the world and its values. God invites us to be partners in what John Dominic Crossan calls “God’s great cleanup of the world”. We work in partnership with God, so that the gospel values of love and compassion and justice might triumph in our own lives and in the world. God has a deep, abiding and profound love for the world. Our prayers for the city and all its people, for peace and justice, for hope and healing, reflects our longing to participate in God’s passionate love affair with the world. As we journey through the city, we feel the burden of the cross we carry. At the same time, we experience the reality of its liberating power. We renew our commitment to the crucified and risen Christ as we commit ourselves to serve Cranbrook in love. Join us on Good Friday, April 3. We begin at the Clock Tower at 10 a.m. I invite you to journey with us. Come pray with us. Come show your love for Cranbrook. Come carry the cross with us. he winds of time; relentless and unforgiving, far beyond the control of mankind. So, too, the winds of war, the winds of change and the winds of winter. Yet, it would appear, some winds are controllable. According to the spin of the day, total control required nothing more than a swallow of Adlerika; a spoonful of Vigorol, a chew of Rexall’s Orderlies or Beecham’s Pills, a spoonful of California Fig Syrup, or Bisurated Magnesia; a myriad of cures, all competing for the consumer’s dollar week after week, as regular as clockwork, and all promising relief. Relief for Mrs. M. Owen, who, according to the Courier of Jan. 15, 1932, declared, “Overcome by stomach gas in the dead of night, I scared my husband badly. He got Adlerika and it ended the gas.” Relief for an unnamed young wife of 1931, who was afraid to eat, “Afraid of stomach gas, I lived on soup for five months. Then I tried Adlerika and now I eat most anything without any gas.” Blessed relief for Mrs. E. Touchstone: “For 9 Years Gas Ruined Her Sleep,” stated the Courier ad of January, 1930. “Due to stomach gas I was restless and nervous for 9 years. Adlerika has helped me so that now I eat and sleep good.” Just in time for that English class. The citizens of Cranbrook were promised cures from the earliest days. In 1900, druggist R.E. Beattie advertised,
“A powder-mill explosion removes everything in sight; so do drastic mineral pills but both are mighty dangerous. No need to dynamite your body when Dr. King’s New Life Pills do the work so easily and perfectly. Cures headache and constipation.” The visuals are stunning. Nitro-gastric explosions surfaced once again on August 2, 1928 in the Courier: “Dina-Mite, a tasty breakfast food that corrects constipation. “Dina-Mite” the new health food … This unique blend of wheat, bran and flax has resulted in a cereal with a rich nut like flavor. Besides supplying abundant nourishment Dina-Mite remedies and removes the cause of constipation. Feel fit and happy every day by starting with a bowl of Dina-Mite porridge.” Yes, indeed, just what the doctor ordered. And, according to a local Beattie-Noble ad of 1914, doctors were definitely concerned, “this simple rule of health is daily called attention to by every doctor in the land, whose first question to the patient almost invariably is, ‘Are your bowels regular?’ Yet there’s not one person in fifty who takes proper care of the bowels [which increases] the risk of typhoid fever, appendicitis and many other serious diseases.” Mr. Frank Piratzky declared in August, 1934, “I am 34 years old and as far back in my life I have been constipated. I was so bad that I had one bowel movement every five or six days. I was taking every kind of drug known for constipation. Now for the last two months I have been eating a little All-Bran night and morning and I have at least two to three bowel movements each day.” Lurid by present day standards, but, according to Mr. Piratzky and the good folks of Kellogg’s, well worth noting at the time.
Cranbrook Herald, February 23, 1923. It was, in fact, just the tip of the intestinal iceberg. Scottish physician, Sir William Arbuthnot Lane (1856-1943), a surgeon of note in his younger years, spent much of his later career espousing the benefits of “New Health;” dedicated, among other things, to health and happiness through high-fibre diet, exercise and plenty of sunshine. His “New Health Society,” founded in 1925, viewed the bowels as central to health. Constipation caused “autointoxication,” or self-poisoning, respon-

sible for many ills, the majority of which have since been discounted by the medical fraternity. The added efforts of American-born Seventh Day Adventist Dr. John Kellogg, who promoted health through a vegetarian diet, regular enemas, and sexual abstinence (he believed his Corn Flakes decreased sex drive), provided a solid selling foundation for the “cleansing” concepts of the 20th century, concepts that continue to generate large profits for cure-all companies 100 years later Mind you, it was im-
portant to run with the right product. Dr. Chases’s Kidney-Liver Pills ad in June, 1941, asked the vital question “Why use a “sissy” laxative? Mild or ‘sissy’ laxatives merely cause a movement of the bowels without effecting a thorough cleaning out of the colon or large bowel. For this reason you are misled into thinking that you are doing all you can to overcome a constipated and poisoned condition of the system. Those who know Dr. Chase’s Kidney-Liver Pills appreciate the value of a real medicine which not only effects a thorough cleansing of the colon or large bowel but also arouses the liver and kidneys to activity in filtering poisons from the blood. Once you have proven the merits of Dr. Chases’s Kidney-Liver Pills you will never return to the use ‘sissy’ laxatives again.” Sounds like those earlier dynamite guys may have been onto something. One final report from the bowels of history, in this case a “splendid letter from Mrs. Haynes” that ran in the Courier of March, 1934. “For 50 years I have been a martyr to constipation. I have tried every remedy under the sun. One day I read an account of someone who had been relieved by All-Bran, but I thought ‘What was the use of me trying anything more when all else had failed?’ A while after, I read it again. That time I thought I would try it; it would do no harm anyway. I began with a small dish of your All-Bran for breakfast, and wonderful to say, I never need to take any physic [laxative] at all now. How I wish other poor sufferers from constipation could be persuaded to try it.” If Mrs. Haynes can do it after 50 years it just goes to show, that even for long-time sufferers, it all works out in the end.

The Kootenay Ice know it isn’t going to be easy. They know the odds might be stacked against them. But they also know, if there is any team in the WHL’s Eastern Conference capable of knocking off the Calgary Hitmen, it’s the Kootenay Ice. After all, they’ve done it before. “People are probably going to put their money down on Calgary,” said Kootenay Ice alternate captain Austin Vetterl Thursday morning. “But we know we can do it. Our room has the confidence to go in there and beat them in a seven-game series.” The Ice and Hitmen prepare to meet in the first round of the WHL Playoffs for the second consecutive year after wrapping the regular season with a two-game back-to-back set. With two victories in those final outings, the Hitmen claimed the Central Division crown and locked in a first-round rivalry matchup with the top wild-card seed Kootenay Ice. During the 2014 WHL Playoffs, the sixth-seeded Ice upset the third-seeded Hitmen in six games of their first-round series. In 2014, the Kootenay Ice entered the post-season with less wins and points than the Calgary Hitmen (39 wins to 48; 83 points to 103). In 2015, the Ice enter the post-season under very similar circumstance (37 wins to 45; 78 points to 95). If the Ice are to advance to the second round of the 2015 WHL Playoffs, it’s going to take a little bit of deja vu and an upset of similar proportions. “Doing it last year will give us a little more confidence going into their building,” Vetterl said. “Obviously they’ve got home-ice advantage but we know we can win in that building. “The regular season

The most important thing to do in the playoffs is doing the little things to win.” With the likes of Adam Tambellini, Jake Virtanen, Connor Rankin up front -- just to name a few -- the Hitmen boast dangerous depth in the scoring department. “Don’t give them too much time and space, especially in the neutral zone to get speed,” said Kootenay Ice alternate captain Luke Philp of shutting down Calgary’s big guns. “We have to have good back pressure as forwards to help out our ‘D’ and limit odd-man rushes. “It’s going to be a battle, obviously we know that. We’ve been tweaking a few things all week here and I’m sure they’ve been making adjustments of their own. We’ve just got to be ready to play from the get-go. If we have good starts, that usually helps us along the way.” On the flip side of the equation, Sam Reinhart, Tim Bozon, Philp and Jaedon Descheneau represent an equally lethal set of weapons in the scoring department. The two teams battled through a seven-game regular-season series, with the Ice
claiming three wins, including two on home ice. The Hitmen went 2-1-0 against the Ice at the Scotiabank Saddledome. A matter of five goals separated the two teams in regular-season scoring, with the Hitmen registering 31 goals (4.43 goals per game) to Kootenay’s 26 tallies (3.71 goals per game). The bulk of that differential can be attributed to a 9-2 blowout win for the Hitmen in Cranbrook back on Oct. 24. If the Ice hope to outscore their Central Division through a best-ofseven series, speed and a tenacious forecheck will be key to getting on the nerves of big defencemen Travis Sanheim, Keegan Kanzig and company. “We’ve got to get the puck behind their ‘D’ and use our speed and get on them and be quick on them,” Vetterl said. “They’re big and physical. Not all of them move the puck all that well, so if we give them no time and space, we’re going to get the puck back and we’re going to be able to make plays on them down low.” A young Kootenay blue line will need to deal with the likes of Calgary’s big forwards, which could be a big determining factor in the series.

Dynamiters & Storm face critical Game 5 tilt Friday Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
In the Kimberley Dynamiter’s pursuit for Kimberley’s first Junior B championship since 1980, Games 3 and 4 in Kamloops didn’t go exactly to plan. After the Nitros jumped out to a 2-0 series lead following Games 1 and 2 at the Kimberley Civic Centre, the Storm made use of home ice to even the best-of-seven series 2-2 leaving three games to decide the 2015 KIJHL championship. “I’m a big believer you’ve got to have good parking skills. What’s happened these last two days is done,” said Kimberley Dynamiters head coach Jerry Bancks following Wednesday’s 4-0 setback in Game 4. “It’s done. Everything we’ll do from this moment on will be in preparation for playing in front of the best fans in the KIJHL in one of the best barns. It’s all positive from here on.” With roughly 1,000 fans in attendance at seemingly every recent Kimberley Dynamiters playoff game, there’s no doubt the Kimberley Civic Centre will be humming come Game
5’s 7 p.m. puck drop Friday night. “We’ve got the best fans in the league so it will be pretty easy to be up and ready for [Game 5],” said Nitros captain Jason Richter Wednesday night. “We do well in our own barn and we’re back to that regular ice surface. We’ll definitely come out harder.” Both Bancks and Richter expressed thoughts that the Nitros didn’t come out hard enough or ready to play in Game 4 Wednesday in Kamloops and a 4-0 final score in favour of the Storm is reflective of those musings. With both teams having earned a pair of victories on home ice, all that remains is a bestof-three series for the KIJHL championship. “If someone would have told us at the beginning of the season we could play a best-ofthree on the road for the championship, we would have been there in a heartbeat,” Storm head coach Ed Patterson told Adam Williams of Kamloops This Week. “I think we’ve got the momentum with the way we pounded their bodies physically. We know the rink now, inside and out,
after playing a couple games there and the boys are stoked to get on the road.” The Storm arrived in Kimberley Thursday afternoon and got in a quick practice in preparation for Friday’s all-important fifth game. In 10 post-season home games, the Dynamiters are 7-1-2, having suffered one home-ice defeat per series. The Creston Valley Thundercats edged the Nitros 2-1 in overtime Feb. 20, while the Fernie Ghostriders got past Kimberley 7-4 at the Civic Centre March 4. Most recently, it was the Beaver Valley Nitehawks earning a 4-3 overtime win in Kimberley March 15. Away from the Olympic-sized surface at McArthur Park, the Kamloops Storm are 4-4-1, including 0-2-0 at the Kimberley Civic Centre. If the Storm hope to claim the KIJHL championship, they will have to find a way to win in Kimberley at some point, be that in Game 5 or, if necessary, Game 7 on Tuesday, March 31. Burke earned both victories over the Ice in the final two games of the regular season. “Both those goalies are good goalies, but like any goalie, it’s all about getting traffic and pucks to the net,” Vetterl said. “When we get pucks to the point, we’ve got to have men in front and when you’re on the rush, you’ve got to get puck to the pads and get rebounds.” At the other end of the rink, a busy season is set to wear on for Ice goaltender Wyatt Hoflin. The native of Spruce Grove, Alta., played in a franchise-record 67 games for the Ice and was named the Vaughn WHL Goaltender of the Month for March. Needless to say, the workload
hasn’t seemed to have any adverse effect on the 20-year-old Hoflin, who has only gotten better as the season wore on. Game 1 between the Ice and Hitmen is slated for 7 p.m. Friday at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary. After Game 2 Sunday afternoon, the two teams return to Cranbrook for Game 3 at Western Financial Place Tuesday night. Local D Ben Betker signs NHL deal Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
The NHL’s Edmonton Oilers announced the signing of Cranbrook native Ben Betker to a three-year entry-level contract Thursday afternoon. Betker, a 6-foot-6, 220-pound defenceman with the WHL’s Everett Silvertips, was originally selected by the Oilers in the sixth round (158th overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. In 64 games with the Silvertips this
season, the 19-year-old blue-liner registered a career-high 31 points, including six goals. As a 1994-born player, Betker will age out of junior hockey following the 2015 WHL Playoffs. In 201 regular-season WHL games, Betker tallied 14 goals and 58 points. Betker and the Silvertips open the 2015 WHL Playoffs Friday night when they host the Spokane Chiefs.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My youngest son is 34 years old and lives with my wife and me. He is an alcoholic and is unemployed, with no interest in getting a job. He helps at home by doing the cooking. He is a great cook by trade. He was laid off as head cook at a restaurant and can’t get over it. My son is a good person, and I love him very much. He claims he was blackballed. He has had 10 good jobs over the past 15 years, but has had at least five DUIs and has been in jail three times. Could this be true? Is there any way I could get him out of the house and into a work program? My wife will not back me up when I tell him he has to get a job. -- Beside Myself Dear Beside: Employers routinely refuse to hire those who have a drug or alcohol problem and have been arrested multiple times. It has nothing to do with being “blackballed.” Regardless of his cooking skills, your son is not a reliable employee. Before you check out a work program, please see if he will go to an AA meeting (aa.org). You and your wife could also benefit from understanding how you may be enabling your son’s drinking, which undermines his efforts to find employment. For you, we recommend Al-Anon (al-anon.alateen.org). Your son can still turn his life around, but he needs to get off the booze first. Dear Annie: I could have written the letter from “Tired of Sharing,” the woman in her 50s who was dating a man who always had a group of women around him. It brought back vivid memories of a crazy time in my own life. I, too, met a man who seemed witty and funny. I fell hard, ignoring all the signs of a lousy relationship blooming on the horizon. My guy had a harem of women, too. They were only “friends” whom he talked about all the time. They knew no boundaries and would call him at any hour for anything. If they wanted help, he’d drop whatever he was doing, leaving me to handle stuff at home by myself. How stupid of me not to know that the relationship could only go downhill. My life was a living hell for a long time, culminating in a nervous breakdown. I finally had enough and moved out, and it was the best thing I ever did. He ended up marrying one of his “friends.” I dodged a big bullet. There is life after such a horrendous mistake if you get out in time. I always thought I had to have a man in my life in order to be happy. But after years of dating and being in unhappy relationships, I gave it all up, and I’ve never been happier or more free. It’s exhilarating to know you can do for yourself and be truly content with life. I would never go back to that crazy lifestyle. Tell that woman to run away as fast as she can. She’ll be glad she did. -- Older and Wiser Dear Older: No one should remain in a relationship where you don’t feel valued, where you think you have to put up with constant mistreatment and disregard because otherwise you would be on your own. He was predeceased by his father, Stefan Blewaska and his mother, Maria Blewaska of Fairmont BC. He will be loved and remembered by his brothers Edmund and Gary Blewaska, his sister Marianne Tucker, his nieces Erin Dowset, Patricia Tanner, Stacie MacNeil, Jennifer Mireau, Katie Flury and his faithful travelling companion Lil Skid. He made friends everywhere he went. He touched the hearts and souls of people and there were many life long friendships that he developed all over the world through his work and travels. Many of these friends were like his second family. He had a passion for travel and cycling. He died doing what he loved most in a country that was like his second home to him. Mom passed away peacefully at the age of 91. She lived a full life, born in Torquay, England moving to London where she studied nursing at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing during WW 2 and so began her lifelong devotion as a caregiver. In 1957 Mom sailed on the Empress of France to Halifax, traveling across Canada by train to visit her sister & family in Kimberley, BC. Here she met my Dad (Jim) and they raised my brother and I; a six month visit that turned into a lifetime in Canada. It was in Kimberley that she continued her devotion as care giver, working as a nurse at the Kimberley General Hospital, later as Care Coordinator at the Pines Special Care Home and in her retired years looking after my dad and her pets. She had many fond memories of working with the “girls” at the Pines and still enjoyed keeping in touch with them. We had many good times as a family growing up in Kimberley, spending summer vacations camping with friends in Penticton or going to Saskatchewan to visit Dad's family. In 1990, both retired, Mom & Dad moved to Campbell River to be closer to Tim & I and my family. They both enjoyed the Island & always said they never regretted moving. Both Tim & Dad passed far too young, but Mom continued to enjoy her home & Island living, eventually moving in 2000 into Ironwood Place in Campbell River. Here she befriended many good & caring people; both fellow residents and staff that meant a lot to her. Thanks Mom for not only being my mother but a best friend and along with Dad for instilling the things in me that have made me who I am today… and for the treasure trove of wonderful memories… until we meet again! Joan is survived by Michael & Debbie, grandchildren Christopher, Stephanie, Lindsey & special friends Ernst & Lori Leitz Many thanks to staff at Ironwood Place, the Community Care workers, Dr. Meckin & the nurses on 2nd floor, who were all so kind and caring to my Mom. There will be a Celebration of Life for Joan at Ironwood Place Assisted Living Care Home in Campbell River from 2 – 3:30 pm, Saturday March 28 2015. Obituaries Martha Meeks February 2, 1927 March 8, 2015 Former resident Martha Meeks passed away at Victoria General Hospital on March 8, 2015 in her 88th year, with family by her side.
Born February 2, 1927 in Avonlea SK, the daughter of Emerentia Medinsky and Markus Bornowsky. Martha graduated from St. Eugene’s Hospital School of Nursing January 3, 1949. Her nursing career spanned over 30 years, primarily at the Cariboo Memorial Hospital. Martha married David Murdoch Meeks August 6, 1949 in Cranbrook. After a brief stay in Golden BC they moved to Williams Lake in 1967. David passed away in Williams Lake April 19, 1971. Martha is predeceased by her parents, her brothers Mike (Adelia), Mark (Kay), Joe (Jean), Wilfred (Lynne), and Rudy and by her sisters Emma (Bill) Petrynko and Rose (Manley) Parsons. Martha is survived by 2 sons, Allan Meeks and Bill Meeks, 5 daughters Bonnie Hyldig, Helen Meeks, Ann Nichols (Dennis), Peggy Meeks and Jan Brunache (Steve). Loved and cherished by her 21 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, sister Leona Lane, sister-in-law Jill Bornowsky, and brotherin-law Cyril Lane and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Williams Lake on Saturday March 28 at 11:00 am, Reverend Derrick Cameron presiding. Interment of the Urn will immediately follow at the Williams Lake Cemetery. Memorial donations in memory of Martha may be made to the Cariboo Foundation Hospital Trust, PO Box 2562 Williams Lake, BC V2G 4P2.

LEICESTER, England - A maligned monarch found under a parking lot was buried in pomp Thursday, as Britain embraced comeback King Richard III, a long-reviled ruler who is experiencing a remarkable posthumous renaissance. Royalty and religious leaders joined archaeologists, Richard’s distant relatives and curious Britons for a service in Leicester Cathedral that saw the king’s bones buried 530 years after his violent death. Scientific sleuthing including radiocarbon
dating, bone analysis and DNA tests - confirmed the remains belonged to the long-lost king, who died at the Battle of Bosworth, near Leicester, in 1485. The victor, Henry Tudor, went on to reign as King Henry VII and founded the Tudor dynasty. Richard was buried, without a coffin, in a church that was later demolished. For centuries his image was defined by William Shakespeare’s “Richard III”: a hunchbacked tyrant who murdered his two young nephews because they were rivals for the crown.

Lillian Emily Anne Nolan (Davies) April 20, 1933 – March 25, 2015
Lillian was born in Dapp, Alberta to Mary and Richard Davies. The family moved to Vancouver in 1938 where Lil attended Little Flower Academy. She graduated from senior high and pursued her nursing career at St. Paul’s Hospital graduating in the class of 1955. In 1953 Lil met Garry, the love of her life. In 1968 Garry and Lil moved with their four girls to Kimberley where they started a business partnership at the Canadian Hotel. Lil went on to become a successful realtor with Lytle Agencies. After retiring from Holmes Realty in 1993 Lil was very active in sports, she loved curling, golf, badminton, and bridge with the girls. Lil was very involved with the community as President of the Chamber of Commerce and volunteered for numerous activities. In her later years Lillian enjoyed many happy summers at the family cottage at Wasa Lake watching her daughters raise their own families, playing with her grandchildren, and visiting with family and friends. She always loved to look at the Rocky Mountains from the deck, reminiscing with the love of her life, Garry, and friends and family that dropped by. Lillian loved to play a competitive game of bocce. Most of all Lil loved to have fun with all her family and friends, she loved to make people laugh with her quick wit humour. Lillian is survived by her husband Garry, her daughters Lee (Simon), Cathy, Kim (Brian), Kari (Noelle), her grandchildren Chelsea, Camille, Carling, Lauren, Nolan, her great grandson Matteus, and a large extended family. A funeral service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 2:00pm on Wednesday, April 1st, 2015 in Kimberley, BC. Reception to follow at the Catholic Church hall. The family would like to extend an invitation for everyone to join them in celebrating Lil’s life. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the BC Children’s Hospital or the local food bank.
Some historians argue that Richard was a relatively enlightened monarch whose reign between 1483 and 1485 saw reforms including the introduction of the right to bail and the lifting of restrictions on books and printing presses. Richard’s fans and foes alike agreed that Thursday’s service was a historic occasion. Elizabeth has ruled for 63 years, and most Britons have never seen a king buried. The service — not a funeral, organizers stressed, since he probably had a simple one in 1485 — borrowed from 15th-century rites, with Latin and plainsong amid the more modern hymns. In a climax of simple dignity, the king’s oak coffin was lowered by a group of soldier pallbearers into a grave in the cathedral floor, surrounded by a black marble plinth carved with his name: “Richard III.” Richard remains a contentious figure. The current queen — a distant relative, though not a descendant — did not attend the service. She sent her daughter-in-law Sophie, Countess of Wessex, to represent the royal family. Handa Bray, whose ancestor Sir Reginald Bray fought for Henry at Bosworth, was among a group of descendants from opposing sides of the 15th-century Wars of the Roses, brought together in a spirit of reconciliation. She said she was happy to be there, but was not ready to rewrite history just yet. “I think he fought very bravely in battle,” she said of Richard. “But I’m glad we won. “I’m here to pay my respects — but to carry on cheering for the Tudors.”
