RESEARCHERS WANT INPUT
Looking for rare seniors Survey seeks answers to why some live longer CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
British Columbian researchers are trying to answer the age old question: what is the secret to a long, healthy life? And to help find the answer, lead researcher Angela Brooks-Wilson said she’s seeking “super seniors” to take part in the Canada-wide study. Brooks-Wilson defines super seniors as people who are age 85 or older, who have never been diagnosed with cancer, heart disease or stroke, dementia or Alzheimer’s, diabetes or lung disease. She said super seniors are “actually quite rare” and the study is looking for as many participants as possible. Parksville Qualicum Beach is known for being a retirement Mecca and the oldest community in Canada. According to Statistics Canada, the average age in Qualicum Beach is 64. “The idea behind studying people who are 85 and free of disease is that we want to look at health rather than just longevity,” Brooks-Wilson told The NEWS from Vancouver, where the study is based. She explains the purpose is to determine whether super seniors have genetic characteristics that protect them from major diseases like cancer. Additionally, a branch of the study will look at centenarians, people who are age 100 or older. Centenarians are eligible regardless of any health issues. The Canadian Cancer Society is providing $200,000 of funding over the next two years for the study, a first in Canada, which is the second phase of a research project that started more than a decade ago. The first phase looked at 500 super seniors based in the Metro Vancouver area, who were interviewed in their homes. See GENETICS, page A7

CRUNCH: There were no serious injuries reported from this multi-vehicle collision Friday morning on Highway 19A in Parksville near the intersection of Martindale Road.
TODAY THROUGH FRIDAY IN PARKSVILLE COMMUNITY PARK
Vehicle access to beach closed You may have to walk a little farther this week to access one of Canada’s greatest beaches. The City of Parksville says the beachfront road in Community Park will be closed today through Friday, eliminating all vehicle access to the beachfront. Late each afternoon, the city says it will attempt to reopen the road.
“However, it is possible the road will remain closed overnight,” the city said through a news release. “During this time, vehicle parking will be accommodated in the overflow parking area behind the curling rink.” The work being done includes repair of the drainage issues which cause roadway flooding in heavy rain. The city said this will involve trench-
ing about 30 metres past the washroom building to install catch basins and drainage pipe. Meanwhile, construction on the food truck pads is underway with the water connection to the site completed on March 18 and electrical trenching to be completed this week, according to the city. — NEWS Staff/City of Parksville

Dance party adds to memorial scholarship
The Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association has announced that a portion of the proceeds from its third annual dance party will go to the Patrick Nicholson Memorial Music Scholarship. The scholarship, which was created by the KSS Fine Arts Society at the start of the year, will be awarded to a KSS student who is furthering a career path in a music-oriented field. Nicholson was honoured as this year’s Qualicum Beach Citizen of the Year. He played a major role in the community, including that of the “music man” for the previous two Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association dance parties and other events. This year’s dance party features the Timebenders, who sizzle with impersonations of the greatest stars over the last 50 years. The event, which is sponsored by Quality Foods, Lefty’s and Gary’s Bistro, will be on Saturday, Apr. 18 at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre. Doors open at 7 p.m. and music starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $45 per person and includes late evening bunwiches and delectables. A cash bar is available. You can reserve your own table of 10 for $450, and all tickets may be purchased at Fresh N Fabulous Flowers & Gifts in Qualicum Beach. — NEWS Staff
Clarification The Parksville Qualicum Beach Shrine Club says a single enthusiastic member had said he’d look into the club supporting Storybook Village, which the executive decided didn’t fall within their mandate of helping with specific children’s illnesses. They did not commit to help and then back out as suggested in a recent NEWS story.

EMERGENCY PLANNING
Preparing for a disaster CandaCe Wu
news@pqbnews.com
More than 40 residents walked away with a better understanding of emergency preparedness from a meeting in Bowser hosted by the regional district on Thursday night. Manager of building, bylaw and emergency planning services Tom Armet said the meeting was specifically designed as a follow-up to a four-day storm that rocked the Little Qualicum River Village area last winter, causing at least one major landslide and a number of evacuations. “It was a pretty informative meeting,” said

Armet. “The goal of the meeting was to engage residents in disaster resilience planning and to give them a general overview of weather events, the RDN’s role and some next steps in moving forward to be better prepared for future events that may occur.” Many people are unaware of the resources available to them during an emergency. For example, Oceanside Emergency Social Services provides basic services like accommodations, transportation, housing and food in the 72 hours following an emergency.

Life for a pre-teen boy can be complicated, but there’s something special happening at the SOS program Guyz Time that is making life a little bit simpler. “I don’t know what you guys do there (at SOS) but it’s amazing,” said local parent Jeanette Pike, whose son Tanner attends Guyz Time in Parksville. Guyz Time has been successfully running at SOS in Parksville for a number of years and is now being offered at SOS’ new Qualicum Beach location, in the Qualicum Commons building. The free program is for boys in Grades 4, 5 and 6 and involves a number of fun activities that inspire confidence, healthy relationships and com-
munity awareness. Pike said Tanner likes the group of friends he has met through Guyz Time and gets along well with the SOS facilitators of the program. She said it lifts Tanner’s spirit and she has noticed an increase in his self-confidence since attending the program. “He has never had a negative thing to say about the program, he’s so happy to go, and he comes home a much happier boy too,” she said. Jeanette said it’s very convenient that SOS picks up her son from school on Mondays and takes him to SOS to take part in the program. SOS picks up Guyz Time participants from both Oceanside and Springwood Elementary Schools in Parksville and from Arrowview and Qualicum Beach Elementary Schools in Qualicum Beach. Activities that happen in the program have included a trip to the fire hall, a trip to the police station, building a race track from recycled materi-
als and racing matchbox cars. The boys have also made superhero capes from t-shirts and had a pizza-building party. A healthy snack is also provided in the program, and Tanner said he always enjoys snack time. Wenda Allan, Child & Family Coordinator at SOS, explained that the program is a safe place for boys to connect and have fun. She added that SOS facilitators are skilled at working with children, mentoring them and guiding their social development. There is plenty of room to join Qualicum Beach Guyz Time, which runs on Thursdays from 3 to 5 p.m. Girl Talk, a similar program for girls in Grades 4, 5 and 6, takes place during the same time in Qualicum Beach. Both programs also run on Mondays at SOS in Parksville from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Pre-registration for these free programs is required. Please call 250-248-2093 ext. 249 to register or for more information. For more on SOS, visit www.sosd69. com.
If you are passionate about health and wellness be sure to spend some time at the 20th annual Oceanside Family Health and Wellness Fair this weekend. It is the biggest health fair in the mid island region and is being held at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre (PCCC) on March 28 and 29 Lisa Leger of Parksville Pharmasave who has worked tirelessly to bring the event to the community said there will be lots of great seminars, exhibits, demonstrations and product sampling and it is free to attend. “This is the 20th annual. It is an important fair for the community because it allows people to find out about the services we have in this area. People get information but also get to have some fun,” she said. Every year the fair is stocked with exhibitors, doctors and health professionals from across B.C. and Canada to share what they know about living well. The public is invited to browse through the exhibitor booths to taste, sample and learn about new health products. Leger said you can also find out more about health issues that matter to you from health professionals in a number of break-out sessions. “We have so many really good presenters. We need two days to fit them in. Gary Anaka was really popular last year. He will talk about how to avoid getting into trouble with dementia.” Leger is also fired up about their Talk to the Doc presentations which she said provides a great opportunity for people who have frustrations with the Oceanside Health Centre. “Doctors explain from their perspective what is going on in the health system. They answer questions and sometimes it clears the air when people have beefs.” Read the full story online at www.pqbnews.com
JULY 5 AT ARBUTUS MEADOWS IN NANOOSE BAY
Classic cars up for sale at this growing show A number of vehicles sold at last year’s inaugural event aUren rUVinsKY writer@pqbnews.com
The Mid Island Hot Rod Association (MIHRA) is revving up for their second annual Classic Car Event at Arbutus Meadows in Nanoose Bay on July 5. On the first outing last year they attracted around 150 classics and had a good enough response this year that they decided to cap it at 250 vehicles to allow
for comfortable viewing. “This is a bit different than a regular show and shine, this is a real classic car event,” said MIHRA director Art Fee. He said they moved the date up a couple months to their preferred date, explaining they ended up in late August last year because it was the first one and they had to take the available weekend, despite conflicting with other car events in the region. Classic cars are those from 1989 and earlier and last year included notable
entries from the 1920s right up to the late 80s, from Europe, North America and makes like the now defunct AMC (American Motor Cars). While the inaugural event last year included a family day to help bring people out, Fee said this year they are focusing on four main features for car enthusiasts; the car show, a car corral, swap meet and car and food related vendors. Fee said a number of vehicles sold at the corral last year so they will feature it bigger this year including posting vehi-
cles on their website in advance. There will be food vendors and car fun of all sorts for enthusiasts and casual spectators, including face painting and balloons for the kids, with “trophies galore” and great prizes for spectators, Fee said. Participants can set up Saturday and the main event runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, July 5. Again this year all proceeds will go to local community services. The second phase, Brooks-Wilson said, will be simplified as the subject pool stretches across the country. “For those who are eligible we mail out a consent form and questionnaire, super seniors will be asked to fill it out as best they can or call us for help,” she said. “Then we’ll send them a kit and ask them to spit in a tube for a saliva test which is used to isolate their DNA, we’ll also ask for a medical release form so we can ask their family doctor for health information.” Brooks-Wilson confirmed the study is “completely confidential.” The questionnaire will look at some of the diseases the study doesn’t exclude against, as well as the lifespan of participant’s parents and siblings. “It’s interesting that the parents of super seniors (in the first phase of the study) tended to live on average 14 years longer than people lived at

Of note, she said factors they do consider are smoking and drinking, stress, relationship status, children, what age they had children and family history. Brooks-Wilson said the next phase will build on data compiled from the research currently underway. To date, more than 300 super seniors from across the country have signed up for the new phase of the study. Gathering of the Mustangs AUREN RUVINSKY
writer@pqbnews.com
The annual Spring Spectacular Show and Shine at Joe Cunningham Ford is gearing up for another great event May 31. Organized by the Vancouver Island Mustang Association, the focus is on those classic muscle cars which are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, but the show is open to all vehicles. Organizer Doug Wong said they had about 90 Mustangs last year, “plus we had everything from a 1920 Cadillac to a new Lamborghini.”
“We attract the latest Boss and Shelby muscle cars from the Pacific Northwest, mainland and all across the Island,” he said of what he called one of the major shows of its type on the Island. There will be a number of stock and modified class trophies and door prizes. Just show up at Joe Cunningham Ford in Parksville Sunday morning, May 31 with the show running 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be food and memorabilia vendors on site. Visit vima.mysite.com/index.html for more on the club.

Uninspiring start

efer, delay, water it down. This new Parksville city council, which includes a new mayor and three others who are new to the position, has not been an inspiration in its first four months. Perhaps they are finding their way, learning the ropes. If that was the case, one would expect less bluster. There were a lot of heated comments in recent weeks about wood stoves from councillors. In the end, the bylaw that’s before them, one which they have given three readings, is a middle of the road, don’t-do-much-of-anything piece of legislation. There was also much talk about cosmetic pesticides and a wish, by some, to ban them in the city. In the end, council decided to wait to see what the province will do with this file, knowing full well the province is going to take its time and may not even pass any legislation of note related to pesticides in the next two years. Then there are budget deferrals. Almost every group that comes to council asking for financial support is given thanks and told their request will be deferred to budget discussions. That may be prudent and responsible, but it adds to a pattern that seems to indicate this group of politicians talks a good game, but can’t finish. It’s possible many of the things city council wants to do it cannot because its hands are tied by senior governments. Fair enough, but why even bring those things forward? Why not concentrate on the things it can control? Have they visited Temple Street lately? There are a lot of beautiful trees that have been reduced to neat piles of firewood, powerful lights pointing in houses and strange driveway access plans for them to ponder in that seemingly-never-ending construction project. Part of the problem may be a lack of preparation by councillors. Some of them ask questions in meetings that could be easily clarified with a five-minute conversation with staff in the weeks between meetings. CAO Fred Manson and his team have proven to be nothing short of thorough and professional and councillors, especially new ones, should lean on that expertise to gather the info needed to make an informed decision. Many of these councillors have full-time jobs and the councillor’s position pays relative peanuts. We don’t expect councillors to work 40 hours a week on city business for $14,000/year. We do expect them to do some homework and come prepared to meetings. — Editorial by John Harding

Get oVer the tree I totally agree with a recent letter to the editor by Bill Majercsik about the eagle tree in Qualicum Beach. Why is council even talking about what to do with that tree. It’s rotten. Cut it down before someone gets hurt. The birds will find another place to sit. As for the suggested memorial, it’s a tree. Look around. I don’t see any shortage of them. We don’t need a totem pole or a platform, etc. From other letters, people are starting to sound like the citizens of Dog River trying to decide between the world’s largest prairie dog and the world’s largest hoe. If you must do something, plant another tree in its place. You could even get an engraved plaque. Great photo op for the politicians, those that think it’s important to remember a dead plant will be appeased, and council can go back to the jobs they were elected for: town business. Chris hayes Qualicum Beach
Parliament Decay John Harding’s recent editorial (‘Voter discontent’), exactly hit the spot, it crops up in almost every conversation. But maybe he’s a little off-target in suggesting that people’s focus is on what a candidate would do for little old Parksville Qualicum Beach, as under present systems that would likely introduce all manner of bought influence. Surely people’s real concern is with the decay of Parliament — its domination for decades now by leaders obsessed by their own self-importance and by the visible compliance of members whose thoughtful dissent is simply no longer allowed. An unelected, massively expanded Prime Minister’s Office, rigid caucus discipline and mammoth complex bills complete the control, while the unquestioned private-donation system on all major parties conveys a very secretive power to big donors. Plus, of course, the gradually rising awareness of the total privatization of public debt, the cost of which is now stratospheric, distorting the economy while the
root cause is never mentioned in Parliament or the media. There is a rising resentment as more and more people find the wool being pulled over their eyes. Fundamental issues are simply not being addressed, not from casual carelessness or pressure of work but deliberately and in a sustained fashion because the core politicians in all major parties don’t want us to know, and start protesting. So they inundate us with lesser policies which don’t really matter, keep total silence about those big issues, and hope we’ll turn out and vote for them again. Fat chance. Evidence of this is all over the Internet although the national media is mostly silent. A complete change is indicated, a peaceful revolt of the peasants and it’s about time.
cord (CHA) to establish national health standards and stable funding after these deep cuts. However, once Stephen Harper had his majority, deep cuts resumed. The most recent was a cut of $200.6 million. The cuts are slated to continue. In Dec. 2011, the Harper Conservatives announced their intention to cut CHT a further $36 billion over 10 years beginning in 2017. Meantime, on March 31 of 2014, Harper et al let the CHA expire by simply refusing to meet with the premiers. It seems Harper has delivered to his former boss as prime minister what he was unable to do a president of the National Citizen’s Coalition — the destruction of our very affordable, cost efficient national public health care system. Is this what you voted for? What will you vote for this time?

Wait times for joint replacements were again briefly in our news. What wasn’t in the news was the relationship between these wait times and cuts in Canada Health Transfers (CHT) from the federal government or how this connects to the province’s ability to purchase adequate numbers of artificial joints. In 2014, I experienced the deterioration of our public health care system. I was positively impressed by the high level of competence, efficiency and hard-working staff at the hospital and related services I had to access. I was shocked and scared by how stretched all the workers are… and the mistakes that happened due to this under-staffing. My knee replacement was delayed beyond the time frame told to me by my surgeon due to a shortage of joints. I originally thought this was a manufacturing problem. Later I learned it was because insufficient funds were budgeted for the purchase of the prosthetics. Cuts in federal transfer payments, including the CHT, were started by the Paul Martin Liberals in the 1990s. In 2004, the governments of the provinces and the federation entered into a Canada Health Ac-
Recently, the constituents of our local Conservative MP James Lunney have received a survey questionnaire in their mail boxes, in which he asks the following question, “do you think that it should be easier for seniors to make ends meet?” Respondents are given the option of answering in the affirmative: “yes, they’ve worked hard and helped build our country.” The other choice is ludicrous: “no, seniors don’t need any help or recognition.” Constituents are invited to send their completed questionnaires, along with name, contact information and personal details about themselves to Lunney, no postage required. This is a softball question that only the most hard-nosed could answer with a “no.” This is merely a method of locating potential supporters on all of our dimes. Again, the Conservatives are playing fast and loose with the election rules and using government resources for their own purposes. My question: is this legitimate government research or a political misuse of parliamentary resources and privilege? elaine watson Qualicum Beach See MORE LETTERS, page A13

letters well-being
Recent demographic projections for the Oceanside region suggest that the proportion of older people will continue to increase. We are the stewards of the future. As one of those people myself, I am asking myself: “What has your life been about? What is it that is meaningful? Where are we going next?” I am disturbed to acknowledge how much of my life has been about confused priorities, material things, about being a human doing, not a human being. We do live in very confusing times. The country in which I live continues to measure well-being by a very limited and short-sighted concept of something called a Gross National Product. But I don’t think this measurement of prosperity is meaningful to many of us. It’s time to broaden and deepen our thinking. Let’s measure our success as individuals, communities and countries using a measurement that is far better attuned to the realities of true well-being rather than those of consumer affluence and national productivity. We need a new vision of balanced living that we can use to plan for and sustain personal, community, and national well-being. We don’t have to reinvent the wheel: a new model of wellbeing is already beginning to reshape civic and political thought in many countries. It is a vision of how to live more effectively based on the integration of: 1. psychological well-being, 2. physical health, 3. worklife balance, 4. intellectual awareness and education, 5. cultural diversity and resilience, 6. civic health and transparency, 7. community social vitality, 8. ecological diversity and resilience, and 9. that old cornerstone: standard of living. As we look at our personal, community, and national priorities, can
we can ask ourselves: am I successfully balancing these critical factors? Can we have truly successful lives? Can we have truly healthy communities, a truly successful country, if we don’t balance them? Let’s weave these objectives into all our future community planning work and make balancing them our community vision. Andrew Brown Qualicum Beach
wood nuisance A recent editorial by John Harding ended with this statement: “All we can see left for councillors is a ban on future wood stoves and we’re not sure that is going to help those who believe the current situation is unbearable.” Councils do have the power to deal with nuisance smoke and odours. Although I personally would like to see a complete ban because of the horrid treatment from our neighbours and their EPA-approved stove, I believe passing a strong nuisance bylaw with graduated fines would accomplish a great deal in protecting those of us affected. cats relocated A couple of weeks ago, The NEWS published a story about a colony of cats that CatSpan was trying to move, as the cats’ home was in jeopardy and the cats were no longer safe. In fact, loss of a location or danger to the cats are the only circumstances in which CatSpan will relocate cats — it is our last resort as moving a colony is inherently risky. Within hours of the article, CatSpan volunteers received a call from a couple who compassionately offered their

property to take not just some, but all the cats. We were over the moon with cautious happiness. This kind offer was just the first step. The next step was CatSpan volunteers meeting with this amazing couple, and visiting the property where the cats would potentially live out the rest of their lives. CatSpan uses strict criteria for the safety of cats, wildlife and a host of other criteria had to be met. Our volunteers eagerly reported to us that the new home was perfect and the wonderful couple not only was willing to share their property, but wanted to help care for these cats too. CatSpan volunteers have been moved deeply by the community answering our call for help, but there is much more to do. We would like to warmly thank The NEWS for its excellent coverage of the story of our community cats, without whom our message could not have been heard. We would also like to warmly thank all the people from all over Vancouver Island who called and offered their homes, their time, their advice and their support. CatSpan has for years tirelessly kept this colony from growing, spayed and neutered, and fed and cared for these cats to the fullest of our ability. But it is you Oceanside we would like to thank from the bottom of our hearts for your help, and kindness and your support. We also kindly thank all of CatSpan’s team who tirelessly help these and all the community cats. Lastly but definitely not least, we would like to thank our very special couple, and a kind soul who brought this issue to light. If you would like to follow the progress of this big relocation, and see what CatSpan is doing we invite the community to check out our website www. catspanferals.com

LOCAL BUSINESS PROFILE
Rules here force a different marketing strategy JESSICA SKELTON
reporter@pqbnews.com
Zane Patten has to break the mold. Unlike many College Pro Painters franchise owners in North America, he isn’t allowed to solicit his company’s services door-to-door in Parksville. “I do understand and I do empathize,” said Patten, who started his business earlier this year. “At the same time, it’s a hinderance to start-up companies.” The ban of direct, door-to-door sales was made in an amendment to the Parksville’s business and licensing bylaw (Bylaw 1483) that was passed in Nov., 2012. In a 2013 interview with the CBC, former mayor Chris Burger said the change was made in an effort to help the high proportion of seniors in the city feel safe and secure. There are exceptions to the rule, however, for “appeals made by churches, similar religious organizations and other not-for-profit organizations,” so events like charity bottle drives, cancer society canvassers, Girl Guides and political campaigners have the green light. So, Patten has had to think of a few different ways to let locals know his house painting business is looking for customers.
“It’s definitely a situation where I have to use my wits instead,” the VIU student said. At the moment, Patten is leaving flyerlike door hangers that give information about College Pro Painters at residences. Closer to painting season, which doesn’t start until the rains stop around May, he said he plans to put a College Pro Painters kite in Kite Fest, start Facebook campaigns, hang posters, put up yard signs on private property (as approved by the homeowners), take ads out in local papers and on Kijiji and Craigslist, and offer weekly deals. Patten also said he expects word of mouth to play a big role in his company’s success. As such, he plans to personally ensure his employees’ work is professional looking and done on-time and on-budget as specified in each project’s initial quote. “I’m not going to leave until it’s 10 out of 10,” he said, adding he will himself “drop everything and paint” if he has too. As Patten’s business is part of the College Pro brand, which has trained young entrepreneurs to run painting businesses since 1971, he is also able to offer the company’s two-year written warranty.

Zane Pattenhas had to think of other ways to let people know his house painting business is looking for customers.
Despite all the challenges, Patten said he is looking forward to doing business in Parksville. “I was really looking for something to challenge myself with,” he said. “I see this as a good opportunity.” In particular, Patten said he is eager to work on polishing business skills such as communications, prioritization and taking control of a situation, which he hopes could benefit him in his chosen field of hydrology.
While he is focusing on working in Parksville at the moment, Patten’s territory also includes Qualicum and Nanoose. As he expands into those areas in the summer, the young entrepreneur said he will be sure to research and comply with local bylaws regarding door-to-door sales. To learn more about Patten’s business, call him at 250-927-1612 or facebook. com/zanepattenspainters. You can also receive an estimate through College Pro Painters headquarters at 1-800-327-2468.

2014 gone, so what can you do about 2015 tax year? Many people are gathering tax receipts and anticipating a tax refund, or may not be looking forward to the visit with their accountant. Regardless which one, there is nothing you can do now about last year’s taxes, so take this opportunity to do some tax planning for 2015. People sometimes try to cram a year’s worth of tax planning into the last month of the year; not all decisions can be made before December. For example, the harvesting of capital losses may be delayed until year end to determine if the potential tax burden of any realized capital gains might be offset. People sometimes wait for December to make charitable donations. A little planning before-hand by making security donations ‘in kind’ will benefit your favourite charity as well as lessen your tax bill next April. But there are things you can do all year to help your tax bill for next April.

ECHO PLAYERS’ LATEST PRODUCTION RUNS APRIL 9-26
Farcical tale set in a London penthouse The play is also ECHO’s entry in the zone festival Jessica skelton reporter@pqbnews.com
ECHO Players’ latest play, The Full Treatment, took a little longer than normal to get going. The issue: the large number of people it takes to put on this show. “Its been a challenge to pull it all together but everyone has come through with aces,” said director Gerri Hemphill. Aside from a full backstage crew, The Full Treatment has 11 characters that need to be brought to life. While many people stepped forward to lend a hand, Hemphill said she ended up having to phone individuals to fill out the roster. The move worked and she said the response from everyone, including those who have already helped with other ECHO Players productions this year, was very positive. One actress, Kim Bellwood, even agreed to play two of the play’s smaller roles. “That really makes me feel good,” she said. “They’re a very good crew.” The Full Treatment tells the story of the plot to regenerate the readership of a failing English country newspaper. The editor, played by Paul Churchill, decides to invite an elderly couple (Janet Dol and Gerry Fraser) to celebrate their 80th wedding anniversary at a London hotel,
treat them to a wonderful dining experience and have them meet celebrities while the staff write up glowing reports accompanied by endearing photos of this event. Of course, things start to go wrong. The reporter assigned to cover the event is fired for scandalous activities, so the editor usurps the honeymoon plans of another reporter (Scott Murray) and demands he and his new bride (Alycia Matthews) share the same large penthouse suite as the old folks. Then it turns out the elderly couple haven’t spoken to each other in six months, and a fiasco seems to be inevitable. Also there to witness the tailspin is the paper’s photographer (Maureen O’Hearn) and secretary (Michelle Hesketh), a BBC reporter (Aileen Fabris) and a public relations officer (James Matthews). “I think of it as a farce … or at least farcical,” said Hemphill, who also described the comedy as bittersweet. “We laugh at them because it’s not us.” She also said that she believes The Full Treatment, which was written by Michael Brett in the 1960s, to be “a real diatribe against the written press” of the time. In particular, Hemphill said she thinks Brett was commenting on how the press “has to get right into it.” The entire show takes place in the London penthouse suite. The large set is specially made to be easily transported as the show is also ECHO Player’s entry to the Theatre B.C. North Island Zone

iPhone photography making some strides Jessica skelton reporter@pqbnews.com
Debra Kuzbik’s camera bag is getting lighter. These days, the photographer is more likely to pack her iPhone instead of carrying around a chunky DSLR. “I’ve been really impressed with what I’ve been able to do,” she said of using her cell phone’s built-in camera and photography apps on her iPad. “The technology is changing really, really rapidly.” Kuzbik’s journey to iPhoneography, which is defined as taking and editing photos solely using iOS devices, started 40 years ago when she and her husband received a Praktica 35 mm camera for their honeymoon trip to Europe. She quickly latched onto the medium and after many years of using film, Kuzbik eventually made the switch over to digital in 2001 when her husband bought her a DSLR for Christmas. “I didn’t fall in love with it right away,” JESSICA SKELTON PHOTO she admitted of the new technology. HowPhotographer Debra Kuzbik took many ever, she quickly embraced it when she of the images in her show North of L.A., South of the Bay with her iPhone. learned what creative controls it gave her, She’s been using the lightweight techespecially when Photoshop was added to nology more and more these days as the work flow. opposed to packing around her chunky The same thing happened a few years DSLR camera. later when Kuzbik was similarly hesitant
to embrace the built-in iPhone camera. “I was a real snob for a long time,” she said. But as before, the photographer changed her tune. With the technology advancing and herself becoming tired of packing around her large camera all the time, Kuzbik made the switch to her cell phone. (That being said, she still does use the DSLR for landscape shots and will bring a point-and-shoot camera with her on the road.) Many other people are giving iPhoneography a second look, too, and the results are mixed. However, while president of the Oceanside Photographers Club Vivienne Bearder said that everyone has the right to speak their opinions about using a cell phone as a camera she personally doesn’t think people should look down at others based on their equipment. “A person should be open to all forms of expression,” said Bearder, who doesn’t own an iPhone. “Why should someone be limited by the photographic equipment they have?” “There’s room for every genre,” said Kuzbik. “We are free to start with an image and create what ever we can imagine.” Many of the images in Kuzbik’s latest
show, North of L.A, South of the Bay, show off what she could imagine creating using her iPhone, iPad and photography basics like composition, exposure, colour, form and line. These photographs sit side-byside with images taken on more traditional cameras. The exhibit showcases the central coast of California, where she and her family have spent a majority of their winter vacations over the past five years. “We just stumbled on it,” she said, describing the area as “delightfully undeveloped.” The show isn’t a documentary-style exhibit, however. Instead, the photographer tries to capture the ambience of the area, which she said often feels like it’s still in the 1960s due to the slow pace, small surf shops, Volkswagen mini-vans and the ever-present music of The Beach Boys, The Surfaris and The Mamas and The Papas. “You really feel like you’re in a worm hole,” she said. North of L.A, South of the Bay will show at Arts Cafe on Harrison Ave in Parksville until April 10. Kuzbik will then be busy putting together another show of iPhone images for the MAC in November. To view more of Kuzbik’s work, visit debrakuzbik.com.

Al Greenwood will bring back the classic clean humour of Red Skelton in his tribute show, Reflections of Red, on April 4 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. #49 - Mt. Arrowsmith.

A tribute to Red Skelton It’s billed as clean, simple, respectful comedy made specifically for seniors JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pbqnews.com
Comedy will return to its clean roots for a night when Reflections of Red, a Red Skelton tribute, comes to Parksville’s Royal Canadian Legion, Br. #49 — Mt. Arrowsmith on April 4. “It’s non-offensive, respectful humour,” said Larry Hall, entertainment chair at the Legion. “People of our age group appreciate it.” The show was created in 2005 by Victoria-based actor Al Greenwood, who said he had noticed that there was little to no comedy made specifically for seniors. “I wanted to give them something everyone could watch,” he said, adding that he also believes that comedy should be “clean and simple.” In Reflections of Red, Greenwood brings classic characters like The Two Seagulls, Clem Kadiddlehopper and Freddie the Freeloader to life using costumes, music and Skelton’s original material. “I think of it as watching his TV show,” he said. Throughout the act, Greenwood also speaks about Skelton’s life and extensive
accomplishments. While he said it can occasionally be difficult to perfect an impersonation of someone who was essentially an impersonator themselves, taking on Skelton’s roles was natural for Greenwood. “I’m a very physical actor so it was very easy to make the transition,” said the performer, who has a background in both acting and clowning. A “self-taught” clown, Greenwood first learned to juggle and walk on stilts in his early 20s for a role in Barnum. Soon after, he performed at a birthday party and was hooked on the gig. “I thought, ‘Are you kidding, somebody pays you to play?’” he said. “What better job is there?” Greenwood worked as a professional clown for the next 35-40 years, but eventually decided to also get back into theatre. He said Reflections of Red allowed for him to keep up with both his skills. Advance tickets to the show are $20 and are available now at the bar in the Legion’s lounge. There will also be tickets sold at the door on April 4 for $25. The show will start at 7:30 p.m., but doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the kitchen will be open for those wanting dinner.

After a sold out show last month, Jared Borland continues to bring what he calls “high caliber comedy” to this region. “I have some great comedians that I’m bringing up for the show,” Borland told The NEWS from Vancouver. Eddie Della Siepe, Kyle Jones and Borland will take to the stage Thursday night for an intimate comedy show at Smoke ‘n Water in Nanoose Bay. Borland, who was raised in Nanaimo but now lives in Vancouver promoting and partaking in the bustling comedy scene, called the
comedians “some of the best in the business.” Della Siepe is best known for being one of the longest running comedians on Much Music’s popular Video On Trial show. “Because of that experience his humour is television-friendly,” explained Borland. “To be very funny and happen to be clean is rare in this business, you get a lot of respect in this industry doing that and he’s mastered it.” For more info and tickets ($20), call 250-9370999 or visit www.arbutusevents.ca. The Parksville and District Business Awards were handed out March 12. Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Resort and Spa, won the Business of the Year award for those businesses with more than 15 employees. Isle Golf Cars was handed the Business of the Year award for those businesses with fewer than 15 employees. Kristy Lotzien of Soak Essentials took home the award for Entrepreneur of the Year. Dave Paul who is a server at Pacific Prime Restaurant at The Beach Club Resort won the Outstanding Customer Service award. Paul who has been in the service industry for 26 years loves being part of the team at the Beach Club Resort which by the way is once again supporting the Brant Wildlife Festival. You have one more opportunity to take part in Dine For Nature at Pacific Prime Restaurant. The Beach Club Resort will be donating 15% of food and beverage sales every Wednesday in March to the Brant Wildlife Festival. General Manager Arthur Wong said last year the sales generated $900 for the festival. The arrival of spring has resulted in plenty of opportunities to photograph nature in all of its glory and local youth have an opportunity to show off their images in the inaugural Brant Wildlife Festival Kids Nature Photo Contest. Sponsored by the Brant Wildlife Festival and the Parksville Qualicum Beach News, the contest is open to children aged 6-18 who live in School District 69 (Qualicum). There are three divisions: ages 6-9, 10-14 and 1518. In keeping with the wildlife theme, contestants are invited to submit a photo they have taken of a plant, animal or landscape. Photos cannot be digitally altered and images of pets or farm animals are not eligible. Shutter bugs have until March 27 to enter the contest through an online platform hosted at pqbnews.com/ contests. Here, they can upload their photo and fill out a registration form including the name and address of an adult representative. Participants can submit only one photograph, which must be in JPEG format. Voting will take place between March 30 and April 10 and nine photos will be printed by and displayed at Qualicum Beach Pharmasave. Each first prize winner will receive a $50 gift card from Qualicum Beach Pharmasave. The second and third prizes include passes to Milner Gardens. Full contest details are available on the online contest platform (pqbnews.com/contests). If you have any technical difficulties on the site, please contact Peter McCully at publisher@pqbnews.com. Lisa Clason, community services coordinator of the Mount Arrowsmith Salvation Army said their building fundraiser on March 14 generated $1653 dollars. For $5 people who stopped by the church at 187 Alberni Hwy. got to enjoy a big slice of cake and coffee and then bid on silent auction items. Clason said the Salvation Army building is definitely in need of a new kitchen. She said their goal is to be able to put all of their services under one roof in town but admitted it will take a lot of money for a new facility and that is why they will hold another cake fundraiser next year, only it will be bigger and better.
Dave Paul (left) of Pacific Prime Restaurant at The Beach Club brought his daughter Morgan (right) when the Parksville and District Business Awards were handed out March 12. Dave won the Outstanding Customer Service award. It is presented to a person who is known for always going the extra mile to serve customers. 10 yearold Morgan is the publisher of the Whisker Weekly newsletter which can be found at The Beach Club.
Left to right: Lisa Clason, Linda Cale and 10 year old Jasmin Naylor were busy in the Salvation Army kitchen, March 14. The team of cake bosses served up an extensive variety of sweet treats for a dessert fundraiser. The building at 187 Alberni Hwy. in Parksville is showing its age and Clason said they are raising money for a new facility that will have more space for their soup kitchen and the other services they provide.
Three-year-old Cali Pearce (left) and her six-year-old brother Mason (right) were among the many people who enjoyed free cone day at the Parksville Dairy Queen March 16. DQ also requested donations for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals which raises funds to help save and improve the lives of kids treated at children’s hospitals across Canada. The restaurant gave away over $3200 worth of cones and brought in $851 for their charity.
Four year old Sophie McMahon of Coombs enjoyed a puppet show at the Parksville Library, March 18. Several youngsters were entertained when library staff performed the story of, What is a Gruffalo. Using several stuffed creatures they acted out the adventures of a mouse’s walk through the woods and its encounter with a fox, an owl and a snake. On March 25 at 10:30 a.m. the library will be presenting spring break family storytime.
What Women Want at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre tickled the fancy of 800 women who attended the elegant affair on March 20. Janice Carpenter (left) assisted with the application of metallic temporary tattoos at the Arbutus Events table. Chantelle Anna (right) who was part of the Longevity Medical Aesthetics team took a break to enjoy some of the fun and had Janice apply an artistic tattoo on her neck.
Six year old Carter Orth from Parksville enjoyed viewing the Brant geese and other birds that stopped by the shoreline at Parksville Community Park, March 22. The Arrowsmith Naturalists brought their spotting scopes and a giant anniversary cake to the park for Brant in the Bay. The event was one of the many nature activities that have been taking place around Oceanside for the 25th annual Brant Wildlife Festival which runs until April 26.

JOHN WESTNEDGE July 16, 1942 - March 16, 2015 It is with the most sorrowful regret the family announces the passing of their beloved husband, father, grampa, mentor and friend. John was born in St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, on July 16, 1942. This date started the extraordinary adventures of his life. He is survived by his loving wife and incredible companion of 10 years, Barbara Dunagan; his children: Glen (Vicki), Darren (Kiri), Nicky (Wayne), Sarah (Don), Jeff (Cindy), Jen (Orin) and Kara; his step children Steve (Diane) and Leslie (Kevin); his beloved grandchildren: Taylor, Kyle, Cassie, Travis, Caelan, Aaltje, Malachi, Lauren, Anthony, Paige, Georgia, and Levi, as well as step grandchildren Marissa and Alison; his brothers Al (Tiki), Lorne (Dorothy) and sister Mary (Phil); many nieces and nephews; and the extended Charlebois family, of which he was a part of since 1969. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Valerie, of 33 years, his father, Fredrick Outram Jr., his mother Winnifred, step mother Ada, sister-in-law Nadine, mother and father-in-law Dorothe and Bertram Charlebois, brother-in laws Michael and Richard Charlebois, step-grandson Boh, and extraordinary aunt Susie Bond. John held many jobs ranging from: a Vancouver taxi cab driver (he wouldn’t recommend this profession!), an exciting career with the BC Forest Service, and the owner/operator of the successful oil supply expediting business, Corex, in Edmonton, Alberta from 1971 to 1983. His love for Qualicum Beach — his childhood vacation spot — eventually led him to sell his expediting business and move his family of eight to Vancouver Island. With many different jobs interspersed, and one more baby added to the family, he pursued a career as salesman for Haylock Bros. Paving. Eventually, he changed paths to a highly regarded and much respected career in real estate. He spent 23 happy years with Royal LePage, Parkville-Qualicum Beach. Reluctantly, John retired from real estate in 2008 and embarked on new adventures of travel, beach combing, and driftwood furniture building with Barbara by his side. They made many wonderful friends during their winters in Pismo Beach, California and summers on Quadra Island. John excelled in many things. He loved beating his sons on the golf course. He was an avid tennis player, a natural historian and storyteller, a very adventurous boater, a master carpenter, an excellent ballplayer, a dynamic jive dancer, and above all, a family man. He held his family and children in the highest regard and to his last day, they were his top priority. His dedication to coaching his children’s baseball teams and volunteering for the kids’ field trips was a highlight of his child-rearing years. He devoted the same love and commitment to his grandchildren, while cheering them on at sporting events, teaching them to build, or playing games. John was blessed with two great loves in his life, Valerie and Barbara, for which the family is eternally grateful. He taught us all what it meant to be loved. To John, any wrong turn, mishap, blunder, ill fortune, or mistake was just another “adventureâ€? in life, to learn from, enjoy‌ and sometimes repeat! His boating adventures were legendary; we are sometimes surprised we all survived! Although swimming to another island to get matches and sleeping around a fire on the beach seemed like a disaster at the time, he viewed all of these as just “Another Adventure in Lifeâ€?. Cheers to John, our father and husband, to more adventures in all of our lives, and to embrace even the most ill advised outings as “Adventuresâ€?. He will be dearly missed in many hearts and thought of often. If John ever touched your life, the family welcomes you to join them in celebrating his life, a man amongst men, and quite a catch. A Father’s Faith, a Guiding Hand, A Master Craftsman Driftwood Plan. An Ocean Shore, a Shifting Sand, A Wave that Comes to Take his Hand. These Words Alone, They Won’t Replace, A Grampa’s Laugh and Smiling Face. Ëœ Jeff Westnedge Ëœ
The family would like to thank Dr. Fletcher, all the home care nurses, and the staff at the Qualicum Medicine Shoppe who all made John’s last days as comfortable as possible, as well as friends and family for all their support during this difficult time. A memorial Mass will be held at the Catholic Church of Ascension, on Saturday, March 28th at 887 Wembley Road at 2 o’clock pm. Reception and celebration of John’s life to directly follow at Thalassa Restaurant, Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Course. In lieu of flowers, please consider honouring John’s memory by making a donation in his name to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation at 938 West 28th Avenue, Vancouver, B.C., V5Z 4HZ. To send a condolence to the family please visit www.yatesfuneral.ca YATES FUNERAL SERVICE & CREMATORIUM (250-248-5859) in care of arrangements.

FAIRLENE E. MALTBY
May 17, 1928 – March 8, 2015 Fairlene passed away at the age of 86 on March 8, 2015 at Nanaimo Regional Hospital. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Howard; her children Arlene (Dave), Brian (Noreen), Cheryl (Norm); 6 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. The last year or so was not easy for Mom, but now her struggle is over. She had a meaningful and fulfilling life, with a loving family and many friends, careers with Bell and various Insurance companies, and we all enjoyed vacationing together, particularly to Lake Simcoe, Montreal for Expo 67, the Maritimes, Washington DC, and to Mom’s favourite destination: Barbados. Fairlene was actively involved in quilting for many years and in earlier times, she loved to cook. She and Dad were brave to relocate to a new town, several times, in a new province, making friends along the way. Her brothers and sister adored her, and we are pleased to be receiving tributes from many other family members, not only on Mom’s side, but from Dad’s family too. They are much appreciated. No service to be held, as per Fairlene’s request. To send a condolence to the family please visit www.yatesfuneral.ca YATES FUNERAL SERVICE & CREMATORIUM (250-248-5859) in care of arrangements.

Local wrestles for national title
Ben Burgess is hoping to add to his quickly mounting list of wrestling successes T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
After capturing the provincial title at 74 kgs, Ballenas Whaler Ben Burgess is gearing up for a trip to nationals where he’ll compete with Canada’s best on the wrestling mat in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Burgess, 17, captured the provincial title after going 4-0 on the mat. Making it to the final in somewhat easy fashion, Burgess would be tested in the final, where he wound up winning his match by just one point, claiming his first provincial championship in wrestling. “Yeah the last match was close,” Burgess said. “The first three were tough matches in their own right but I was able to win by good margins in each of them. The last one was a lot closer but luckily for me, I was able to come away with the win.” Through his season, Burgess has had the advantage of being able to practise both at Ballenas Secondary and in Port Alberni, where he’s had more hands-on training with a wrestling team. “Our wrestling team isn’t that big,” Burgess said. “So I’ve been going to both Port Alberni

Ben Burgess, left, is headed to Nationals after winning the 74 KG provincial title earlier this month. Burgess, who attends Ballenas Secondary, will be in Fredericton, New Brunswick from April 9 - 12 for the Canadian Wrestling Championships.
and Nanaimo to get some extra practise in with the teams in the area. It’s helped a lot because it allows me to really work with other wrestlers and get the right training in that I need to succeed.” The idea to start wrestling
came around the age of 10, when Burgess watched his older brother Aaron wrestle in high school. Since then, Ben has wanted to not only follow in the footsteps of his older brother, but rather surpass him on the mat as well.
His brother has been helping coach him, along with Whalers head coach Audra Van-Damme, over the past few years and helped him evolve on the mat. “I’ve wanted to wrestle and follow his footsteps from early on,” Burgess said. “To be able to
not only start wrestling, but to make provincials like he did was great.” “I was able to win the provincial tournament while he didn’t quite have as much luck (he did medal in the tournament),” Burgess said. “I’ve been very lucky to have him as a coach for me though — he’s really helped my development these last few years so it’s been good.” Burgess also has a spot on the B.C. Elite Wrestling team, which he earned winning his weight class in the War on the Floor, held earlier in the year at Simon Fraser University. As a member of Team B.C., Burgess took part in the Gut Check Challenge, which featured teams from Washington State and the Japanese National team. “That was a lot of fun,” Burgess said. “Not a lot of people, myself included, had success against the Japanese team but I was able to hold my own in a match against the Washington State team, coming away with a win.” “It was a good challenge and really opened my eyes to seeing just how good others in the world are.”

KSS Kondor golfers ready for another big year T yson Taylor
sports@pqbnews.com
The Kwalikum Kondors golf team is hitting the links, gunning for their third straight provincial championship this season. After winning provincial titles in 2013 and 2014, the Kondors will have a solid nucleus returning for a third straight season. Grade 11s Blair Stewart, Anthony Trozzo and Masato Wilson will all be in
the lineup and should play a big part in the Kondors having success once again on the golf course. “We have a good core of players returning,” coach Butch Gayton said. “Our three Grade 11’s (Masato, Blair and Anthony) have all been on this team since Grade 9 and all three of them know what it takes to be a provincial champion caliber player so we’re very lucky in that aspect.”

With the early success of the KSS Golf Academy, which has students from Ballenas as well, Gayton will have a dozen golfers on the team this season. That means there will be multiple teams at several tournaments through the season for the Kondors. “We’ve had a good number of kids interested,” Gayton said. “The Golf Academy has been very successful so far and
next year we’re looking at another good crop of kids coming in.” “The numbers are great so far and with the winning on the course through our school, that certainly sends the right message to anyone interested in coming here that they’ll have a chance to work on their game and be competitive on the golf course.” See PreSSure helPS, page A34

For Anthony Trozzo, who’s been a part of the KSS Golf scene since Grade 8, this season brings a lot of challenges to go along with the expectations of being a two-time provincial championship winning team. “The pressure is there for sure,” Trozzo said. “We’ve been fortunate to win back to back titles but we’ve also lost some quality golfers to graduation in that time as well.” “We went from being the underdogs, being a small school from a small town, but now all the schools know about us,” Trozzo said. “It adds more pressure for sure but I personally love the pressure and I think it brings out the best golf, not only in myself, but for everyone on the team too.” The Kondors have been hard at it on the course since the beginning of March, taking advantage of the beautiful weather earlier in the month. April 1 will mark the first tournament of the season for the Kondors, which they will host at Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Course. “We’re fortunate to host the opening tournament,” Gayton said. “We have the advantage of being able to practise on two courses here in the area, Qualicum Memorial and Pheasant Glen.” “We owe a ton of thanks, not only to the community that’s been behind us for our past two provincial victories, but to both Ross Mantell at Memorial and Gord Melissa at Pheasant Glen. Both pros at their respective courses have been behind us and helped us out with being able to practise at their fine facilities.”

Three Errington Taekwondo School athletes are back from the B.C. championships with multiple medals in each of their events. Representing the school, which opened in 2010 and is run by Master Revelina Lukashuk and Jody Lukashuk, were Aislinn Welburn, a six-year-old yellow belt, Renata Kamel, an 11-year-old green belt and Sylvan Shackleton, a 14-year-old red belt. Welburn and Kamel both came home with gold and bronze medals and Shackleton earned two silvers. It was a good showing for the small school that only sent three athletes out of their 60 members. Errington Taekwondo runs three schools in three different locations, including Errington, Bowser and Nanoose Bay.
