WOMEN’S DAY FORUM
A question of poverty Federal candidates push for more support, housing JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com
Issues facing women in this country are, or should be, important to men too, federal election candidates told a standing-room-only crowd in Parksville on Sunday, International Women’s Day. Candidates from three parties agreed the federal government needs to do more to address issues related to poverty and housing if women are going to reach a more equal footing with men in relation to education, income and influence. “I don’t think the issues that are important to women aren’t important to men,” said Liberal candidate Carrie Powell-Davidson. “Sadly, we still have so far to go.” The forum was organized by the ParksvilleQualicum branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW). It attracted about 150 people to the Garry Oaks room of the Parksville Community and Conference Centre. Powell-Davison, Gord Johns (NDP) and Glenn Sollitt (Green Party) attended and gave answers to three questions they received in advance from the CFUQ and a handful from the audience. Conservative candidate and government whip John Duncan did not attend — he let organizers know previously that he generally flies back to Ottawa on Sunday afternoons. “Full disclosure, I’m not a woman,” Sollitt said to open his first response, which prompted laughter in the crowd. He said he understood some might just see “another middle-aged white man up here to talk about women’s issues” so he said he asked woman of all ages and economic backgrounds for their views before coming to the forum on Sunday. ANNUAL HERRING SPAWN
Debate continues on quotas CANDACE WU
news@pqbnews.com
The Pacific herring — small, silvery energy-rich fish that band together in a theatrical spawn once a year — have come and gone. But they’ve left an oasis of unanswered questions behind. While the Pacific herring are one of the most abundant fish in B.C.’s coastal waters, many communities have suffered a decrease in stock suspected
from overfishing. The main controversies lay on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, around Haida Gwaii and on the central coast where First Nations and various scientists fear the herring are in a fragile state despite the federal government’s decision to reopen herring fisheries. Though herring stocks are struggling to recover in neighbouring waters, here in Parksville Qualicum
Beach we’re seeing record highs. VIU Deep Bay Marine Field Station manager Brian Kingzett estimated there were more than 70,000 tonnes of herring in the Strait of Georgia last week—many of which were less than five kilometers from the station. “It’s a great number, it’s really high,” said Kingzett. We were scrambling to confirm it was Markle just before deadline last week, but decided to publish the image without a photo credit. Our thanks to Markle for sharing his great work with our readers. DEEP BAY DEVELOPMENT
Project still a possiblity CandaCe Wu
news@pqbnews.com
A development proposal to see Deep Bay diversify is still on the table, according to the president of Baynes Sound Investment (BSI). “We own the land and we don’t want to farm on it,” Amar Bains told The NEWS Friday morning. Baines said he’d like to see the development application move forward sooner than later. “If it was up to us we’d have started development a few years ago,” he said. BSI is best known in the region for a failed development proposal that would have changed the quaint Deep Bay community
dramatically, suggesting at one time the addition of 200 single-family homes, a 292-unit RV park, retail/commercial space and 40 hectares of park space. The project was unanimously voted down by RDN board members in October 2013 as the proposal required significant changes to the official community plan (OCP) and regional growth strategy (RGS). But this year, area director Bill Veenhof, who represents Deep Bay and Bowser, said he’s called for an OCP review — opening the door for change.

Downtown association’s AGM is tonight The Parksville Downtown Business Association (PDBA) is having its annual general meeting tonight at the community and conference centre on Jensen Avenue. The association’s notice said the meeting will include an election of directors, a presentation of 2014 financial statements and the 2015 budget. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. According to the PDBA’s notice, “only property owners and business owners/operators within Parksville’s downtown Business Improvement Area (McMillan Street to McVickers
Street, Jensen Avenue to the waterfront) have voting privileges.” The PDBA was in the news late last year when people saying they represented Craig Street businesses appeared before city council, unhappy with what they said was the lack of attention their street was getting from the PDBA. Parksville businesses within the boundary of the BIA pay additional taxes to fund the PDBA. Approximately $150,000 is raised this way to fund the association. — NEWS Staff

We have been receiving some great photos from readers who are using their cameras to document this year’s herring run. We offer our thanks to all who have sent us their images. The photo above is one of the better ones we have received. It’s of an eagle eating a herring in Parksville on Friday and was taken by Parksville resident Larry Trush.

The RDN also has a number of organized day camps available for students of all different interests. We (the NDP) are determined to bring forward equality and fairness — that’s what our party is all about.” Johns also said the Conservative government has cut funding to many programs and departments that could help provide info to battle poverty and homelessness. “I believe in science and I believe in data collection,” said Johns. “We have to measure our successes and our failures.” “I don’t want to measure my country just on GDP.” Qualicum First Nation Chief Michael Recalma offered a welcome to open the proceedings and then heard the candidates make repeated refer-

income) and ensuring everyone in the country has that amount of money every year, partly by issuing federal government cheques using money from a carbon tax. Johns said the NDP supports a $15/ day child care program and an increase in the minimum wage to $15/hour. Powell-Davidson — who stumbled through her speaking notes more than once, didn’t seem to understand the order of speaking and admitted she wasn’t prepared for one of the questions — didn’t agree with Johns’ suggestion about the increase to the minimum wage. She said one way to empower women is to encourage and support them to start their own businesses and those women often “cannot afford to pay $15 an hour.” The new riding that now includes Parksville Qualicum Beach (along with Courtenay, Port Alberni, Tofino, Uclulet and surrounding areas) is called Courtenay-Alberni. While the governing Conservatives can call it earlier, voters are expected to go to the polls on Oct. 19.

Oh, fur crying out loud

t’s not difficult to accidentally complicate your life in this interconnected world. Sometimes all it takes is your typing finger. I discovered this a few years ago while trying to write an article about bears. I was born in a big city which meant the closest I’d ever been to a bruin was watching Yogi and Booboo on Saturday morning cartoons or Bobby Orr on Hockey Night in Canada. So on a whim, I began my research by typing ‘BEAR’ into my browser. Big mistake. Turns out there is an entire socio-sexual netherworld of people who self-identify as ‘bears’. These bears are porky, bearded guys who are attracted to other porky, bearded guys. Now I don’t know if they get together to play backgammon, slow dance or to toss large bouncing balls back and forth but it soon became clear that these porky, bearded guys wanted to know me a lot better than I wanted to know them, if you get my drift. I’m still getting occasional invitations to meet ‘Gord’, ‘Chuck’, ‘Ted’ and ‘Frank’ for a friendly drink. Who knew? Not me, obviously. Sometimes I feel like roadkill on the sexual highway. Bringing the RDN closer to you

If you won’t go to the regional district, the regional district will come to you. At least that’s what RDN director Bill Veenhof proposes. He represents Deep Bay/Bowser. “I’m trying to do things to make the RDN more relevant to my constituency,” Veenhof told The NEWS. He wants to see Electoral Area Planning Committee (EAPC) meetings take place in each rural community, instead of in Nanaimo where they are now conducted each month before committee of the whole meetings. “The meetings in Nanaimo are a 45-minute drive for anyone to go to so We Have Happy Advertisers! consequently they don’t,” said Veenhof. “The idea is to bring the RDN out to rural areas.” Ideally, he wants to see each meeting followed by a town-hall-style session, giving constituents an opportunity to address the board and ask questions. Right now, RDN staff are looking into the financial implications of moving EAPC meetings out of regional district chambers and into electoral areas. They will need to consider the cost of renting out a space and travel expenses for staff. Moreover, the meetings will have to be held on a different day so they don’t coincide with committee of the whole meetings. “The costs would be somewhat offset by getting people out there (to the
meetings) who wouldn’t have to pay for their trip,” said Veenhof. “At the core of it is the town hall meeting afterwards, where residents can bring their concerns forward.” Veenhof said he wants to make local government more tangible for residents. The whole idea, Veenhof said, was inspired by a 2014 community survey undertaken by the RDN that found many rural residents felt out of touch with local government. “The RDN isn’t necessarily well respected in the rural areas,” said Veenhof. He’s hoping this idea could transpire into a one-year pilot project that could start as early as this fall.

Driver Distraction and Cellphone Use Because distracted driving is a major cause of motor vehicle fatalities in BC, ICBC has asked us to pass along some tips for safe cellphone use to help you focus entirely on driving. The use of personal electronic devices while driving was banned in 2010. Violations will cost drivers a $167 fine and if caught texting or emailing, three demerit points will also be added to a driver’s record. Devices include hand-held cellphones, PDAs and other electronic hand-held devices such as music players and GPS navigation systems. Here’s how you can help to prevent accidents:
Lions Ventureland Playground Once again, the Parksville Lions Club has done Parksville proud!
◆ Place calls before you drive. ◆ Safely pull over to make or receive a call. ◆ Let calls go to your voicemail. ◆ Let passengers make or receive calls for you. ◆ Plan in advance to avoid distraction.
Here are some other tips to help prevent distracted driving: ◆ Make sure your children are comfortable and properly secured in child restraint devices so you can focus on your driving.
◆ Check your route before departing. If unfamiliar with where you’re going, pull over to a safe and legal parking spot to read a map.
◆ Make sure your pets are safely secured in your car before you travel.
◆ Complete your grooming before driving.
◆ Don’t engage in emotionally charged conversations while driving.
◆ Drive defensively. Be prepared for poor driving conditions or unsafe actions of other drivers, pedestrians or cyclists. Expect the unexpected.
Beaches Closed to Dogs in March and April It’s that time of year again when Parksville beaches are popular spots for Brant geese. Flying non-stop from Mexico, geese have only a few days to regain strength before making another non-stop flight to northern nesting grounds. Because Brant feed at the tideline, they are especially vulnerable to disturbances and for this reason, our beaches are closed to dogs in March and April, both on-leash and off-leash. As usual, dogs on-leash are welcome on the waterfront walkway in the Community Park.
City Services Annual Wood Chipping Program
Water Main Flushing
The City’s annual wood chipping program runs from April 7 to April 30. Collection details are available on our website [Newsroom/Public Notices] and collection dates for all neighbourhoods will be advertised in the PQB News.
Water main flushing continues through March 27. Between 7 am and 3:30 pm expect some discolouration of water and intermittent drops in pressure. Keep a fresh supply of drinking water in your refrigerator, check for discolouration of water before doing laundry and should water be discoloured, run an outside tap (after 3:30 pm) until water runs clear. Direct questions to 250 248-5412.
Piles should be placed on the boulevard by 8 am prior to the first day crews will be in your neighbourhood. For ease of access by crews, you must only pile small shrub branches and branches with a maximum diameter of 6 inches, stacked with the larger end of the branch or trunk facing the roadway. Please limit yourself to one pile no more than 5 feet wide by 3 feet high per residence. Do not combine piles from multiple households as it is difficult and time consuming for crews to take apart large piles. When placing the pile, do not obstruct your property’s water connection box should access be required for maintenance. Please note that materials such as pampas grass, yucca, clematis and wisteria vines should not be included. These materials, along with other compostable vegetation, garden debris, leaves and grass clippings may be taken to the Church Road Transfer Station. Please take care to ensure rocks, stumps and construction waste are not included as they may cause injury to chipper operators. Piles containing unacceptable materials will not be removed. Direct questions to 250 248-5412.
2015 Water and Sewer Rates Council recently approved a 2% increase to water utility and parcel tax rates and a 5% increase to sanitary sewer utility and parcel tax rates for 2015 which are necessary to maintain reserves at acceptable levels. The next utility billing will be mailed at the end of March with payment due by April 30.
Englishman River Water Service Meeting The next meeting of the ERWS management board will be held on Friday, March 13 at 8:30 am in the Forum, 100 Jensen Avenue East, Parksville. The meeting agenda is available on the City and Regional District of Nanaimo websites and at www.englishmanriverwaterservice.ca.
For the enjoyment of children and the young-at-heart, members have been busy making Ventureland Playground in the Community Park even better. Two new diggers (one wheelchair accessible), a skywheel, wasp nest, spinner and pirate ship have been installed and the helicopter is better than new. The City is grateful for the contributions by the Lions Club and appreciates the thousands of hours members volunteer to fundraise, upgrade and maintain the playground enjoyed by so many. The City will host an event to recognize the Parksville Lions Club on May 8; stay tuned for details.

Voter discontent
I
f you believe there is growing cynicism about politics, parties and politicians — declining voter turnout may be evidence of that — then it may be appropriate to examine the reasons behind the discontent. One of the complaints we hear is the people we send to Ottawa or Victoria to represent us end up explaining how those capitals and their government machines work, instead of taking the views of constituents to the halls of power. This disconnect is not something owned by one particular party — it crosses all lines. With that in mind, we asked three federal election candidates on Sunday the same question: if you were elected as this riding’s MP, who would be your boss? It’s a too-simple question for a complicated subject, we get that. And these three candidates had just finished their first all-candidates forum, a well-attended event organized by the Canadian Federation of University Women (Parksville-Qualicum branch) on International Women’s Day. If the candidates or their supporters believe this was an ‘ambush’ type question, they should consider it a softball compared to what they would face from the national media in Ottawa. Carrie Powell-Davidson of the Liberal Party had a tough day Sunday. She seemed unprepared — she admitted as much as she stumbled to answer one of the questions from the floor. Her party has a high-profile leader in Justin Trudeau, but when we asked the question she didn’t hesitate to say it was her constituents who would be her boss. The Green Party has one of the most globally-respected leaders in the country in Elizabeth May. The local Green candidate, Glenn Sollitt, didn’t hesitate to say it would be constituents who would be his boss if he was elected MP. NDP candidate Gord Johns also didn’t hesitate with his answer. When asked who would be his boss if elected as this region’s MP, he said it would be Tom Mulcair, the national leader of the party. John Duncan, the Conservative candidate, was flying back to Ottawa to his job as government whip and did not attend the event Sunday. We can’t put the answer to our question in his mouth, but he clearly has a leader with a reputation for strict party discipline in Prime Minister Stephen Harper. This will be an interesting federal election here. Constituents who get the opportunity to speak with candidates should ask them what they intend to do for the riding that includes Parksville Qualicum Beach. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters eAgLe tree Not toP CoUNCiL Priority
Having noticed that a “local” landmark seems to be getting a lot of attention recently, I am compelled to speak on behalf of the “silent majority.” It is obvious from the various letters that have appeared in recent editions, that even our council members have become involved and their valuable time is being wasted to find solutions that will appease their voters. I am finding some of the ideas to be very amusing and sad to see that logic and simplicity in this matter has been thrown to the winds. Firstly; the facts. I believe it was the “eagles” that selected this tree to become their “perch of preference.” Experts have determined that this tree has died and become a safety hazard for people walking along the seawall, and for drivers on the road. Secondly; the solutions. There are several trees in close proximity that appear to be healthy, and I am sure the local eagle population will select the best one to suit their needs. Since the old tree is rotten and needs to be removed for safety sake, so be it. Matter closed. Let’s let our elected officials utilize their time for more difficult matters. Re: Trish Forrest’s letter to the editor ‘Eagle totem’ (The NEWS, Feb. 24). I was feeling really sad to read the eagle tree has to come down but now am encouraged by Forrest’s letter. I had pondered some sort of iron-supported, cement-filled eagle tree. Inspired by the preservation of the Hollow Tree in Stanley Park, Vancouver, but going one step beyond by making it more fire proof. But not being an engineer, I couldn’t quite envision how or if it would work as the tree needs to be so tall. A totem is such a superior idea. Could the local First Nations get involved in design and carving?

The recent letter of John Chambers, ‘Fight all of the enemies of peace’ (The NEWS, Feb. 12) basically depicts Chambers as a biased writer. Usually wars and the like, are the results of blatant injustice. One group taking advantage of a weaker one, the bully on the block if you like. When here in the West we witness the barbaric ISIS executing westerners and these butchers to boot speak with a perfect European English accent, one can only wonder: are they the descendants of the executioners that burned Joan of Arc at the stake under the leadership of John of Lancaster in 1431? Chambers should read Bernie Smith’s Feb. 12 letter to the editor (‘Religious action’). That may shed some light in the shadows. Chambers writes about repelling expansionist Germany; if the French and the English didn’t oppress Germany after
the First World War, than more than likely the Second World War wouldn’t have taken place. Look at Germany now, the leading country of Europe. Thank you, Germany, for the jet airplane. J.C. leCordier Qualicum Beach

striKiNg teAChers hAVe A Lot to LeArN Recent letter writer Kim Hancock mentions that the government held students hostage but did not mention the teachers’ union. Why did Jim Iker take the teachers to the streets of B.C.? The teachers contract in Newfoundland and Labrador expired on August 31, 2012. The president of the Newfoundland and Labrador teachers association, Jim Dinn, told the membership that remember, contracts are always retroactive. He advised the membership that there would be no talk of strike action. Just keep on working, keep the paycheques coming and you will not lose a single dime because a new contract will be signed in due course. It took 25 months to reach a contract settlement. The Newfoundland teachers voted to accept their new contract on September 25, 2014. They will now receive retroactive wage payments. Here in B.C., we had Iker of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation to call strike action. The teachers in B.C. accepted a contract that was 99 per cent of the original offer in June, 2014, and will never regain what they lost in wages walking a picket line, not realizing like in Newfoundland that the main object was to keep on working while talks continued, regardless of the time frame. The Newfoundland teachers can have a chuckle at their B.C. cousins, and the BCTF has a lot of learning to do when it comes to contract talks. Joe sAWChuk Duncan

The Beach Club was swamped with seagulls last week as the annual herring spawn started, bringing fish, fowl and mammals to our region for a feast.

he annual herring spawn has been regarded as one of the greatest natural phenomena of this region. It’s a short period of time, lasting a few days to a few weeks, where the waters lining Parksville Qualicum Beach turn a bright turquoise colour. Commercial fishing boats charge the area vying with the many fish, fowl and mammals who are all on the hunt for herring.
CANDACE WU PHOTO
Herring, like those pictured above, are some of the most abundant fish in B.C.’s coastal waters.

One of many crew members waits to unload thousands of tonnes of herring at French Creek Marina.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Tattoos have come a long way from the docks New biz owner in Parksville says tattoos have become more of an expression of art CandaCe Wu news@pqbnews.com
Tattoos used to be reserved for sailors, soldiers and bikers. But times have changed. The Washington-based Pew Research Center found that in 2010 nearly 40 per cent of millennials (aged 18 to 29), 30 per cent of generation Xers and 15 per cent of baby boomers had at least one tattoo. Which makes it a good time for Wanderlust Tattoo Company to open shop in Parksville. The tastefully decorated, warm orange walls aren’t exactly what one might expect to find walking into a tattoo parlour — but it’s just another sign that it’s a new age of ink. “Tattoos aren’t just for sailors and prostitutes,” said owner and veteran tattoo artist Mark Jensen, who admits he has more marked skin than not. “Tattooing has come a long way, it’s more of an expression of art.” Jensen has 15 years of experience in the tattoo industry and apprenticed under some of the best in B.C. He said he’s done more than 25,000 tattoos in his lifetime to-date. “My dad was a commercial artist and he taught me a lot and got me interested in art,” explained Jensen. “That carried through in school and once I started getting tattoos it just kind of went from there.” Jensen said his first tattoo was a small sun emblem that “didn’t hurt as much as (he) expected it to.” Two weeks later Jensen said he was back to the shop for another one and now the only natural skin he sports is on his face, one of his legs and upper thigh. Jensen’s worked in the Okanagan, Vancouver and around the Comox Valley — but Parksville is where he wants to plant roots with his social media savvy partner Tina Leiser, who is the shop’s coordinator. And the couple is expecting their first baby this September. “Five days after we signed the lease we

found out,” said Leiser, who added the couple had been trying for a long time. “It’s been a really crazy time,” she admitted, smiling. “We did most of the renovations (for the shop) ourselves, we laid the floors, painted, did the trim—it’s definitely been a labour of love.” Jensen explains the name — Wanderlust — comes from a personal love of travel paired with Parksville’s notoriety as a tourist destination. While he enjoys a variety of tattoos, Jensen said his favourite pieces are American traditional tattoos character-
ized by bright colours and bold lines and Japanese traditional tattoos that are “essentially supposed to be a body suit by the time it’s finished” characterized by size and ornate detail. Jensen said he’s looking to hire another tattoo artist by the summer and will host “guest artists” periodically throughout the year. The shop offers walk-ins, consultations and of course appointments. They charge $150 per hour with a minimum charge of $60. “We’re excited to be here in Parksville and we want to be part of the commu-
nity,” said Jensen. “The biggest culture shock from the city was that when you walk down the street people say ‘hi’ to you…People in the city have really mastered the art of ignoring you.” Jensen said Parksville was his favourite place to vacation as a kid and he and Leiser are excited to start their family here. Wanderlust Tattoo Company is located at 180 McCarter Street in Parksville. They are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day except Wednesday. KSS MUSIC PROGRAM
Jazz teacher will practise what he teaches KSS Jazz Extravaganza set for March 12 at QB civic centre JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pqbnews.com
Kwalikum Secondary School music teacher Dave Stewart will once again take the stage with his students at the annual Jazz Extravaganza, but this year he’ll also be there as a musician. This is the first time Stewart, who is a member of the night’s guest group Project 8, will play at the event. “I thought it would be cool to do that,” he said, adding that he wanted to show the students that he practises what he teaches. The night will also feature two student jazz bands and a vocal jazz group performing a range of musical styles from ballads to swing to funk. Stewart said some of this music was played by the students on their recent trip to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho. “They did really well,” he said of the students’ performances. KSS also brought home the top soprano vocalist award, as well as noteworthy performance and trombone from the festival. While the official program starts at 7 p.m., doors to the Extravaganza will open at 6 p.m. and a selection of soloists and small combos will take the stage soon after to play for

the audience as they come in. “We’ve got too much music,” explained Stewart of the pre-show. “We’re going to keep it (the main program) to two hours.” Linda Hildebrandt, who has
two children in the school’s band program and is one of the Extravaganza’s volunteer organizers, is happy her kids have the opportunity to play in the event. “It gives them confidence … and exposes them to
a large audience,” she said. “It gives them a sense of professionalism.” The KSS Jazz Extravaganza will be held on March 12 at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre. Tickets are $25 each, which in-
cludes coffee and dessert, and can be purchased at What’s Cooking in Qualicum Beach, Flix ’n’ Pix Video in Parksville and at the door. “It should be a heck of a good concert,” said Stewart.

Saxophonist Campbell Ryga will join the Geoff Bowen trio at Smoke ’n’ Water restaurant on March 15.
Campbell Ryga will bring his awardwinning jazz saxophone playing to the Smoke ’n’ Water restaurant at Pacific Shores Resort and Spa on March 15. “I’m coming over as a featured guest,” said the Vancouver-based musician, who will join the Geoff Bowen Trio for the show. “We really look forward to playing together.” The trio consists of Geoff Bowen on the drums, Ken Lister on bass and Pat Coleman on guitar. Together, Ryga said he and the trio will play a selection of well-known and obscure jazz standards, and possibly “an original or two.” “I’ll be bringing some of my favourite tunes with me,” he said. Ryga, who teaches jazz at Kwantlen
Polytechnic University and acts as adjudicator at student music festivals, said he will also try to include some songs that young jazz musicians will recognize and even play at school. “There’s something for everyone,” he said. Ryga plays alto and soprano saxophone and has won three Junos for his work on those instruments. He also has two additional Juno nominations and a Grammy nomination, and he appeared on Michael Buble’s recording Crazy Love, which received a Grammy Award in 2010. According to his website, Ryga’s own recordings have twice received the Western Canadian Music Award in the Jazz category and he won Canada’s Alto Saxophonist of the Year award from the Jazz Report Magazine in 2000. Ryga’s performance in Nanoose this
weekend is the first of five jazz nights at the Smoke ’n’ Water restaurant, which has increased space now that the floor-toceiling fish tank has been removed. Future acts in the venue’s series will include Hugh Fraser, Jennifer Scott and Roy Styffe. “All the players are at the top end of Canadian jazz,” said promoter Luis Porretta, who is presenting the music through Quadwrangle Music. “The local jazz community is in for a treat,” agreed John Hildebrandt, who takes care of Smoke ’n’ Water’s marketing/administration. Advance tickets for Ryga’s show are $22 for adults and can be purchased through 250-760-0238 or quadwranglemusic.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $25 for adults and $15 for students. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.

MARCH 19 AT LAZY MIKE’S HOUSE OF MUSIC
Dexterity on display for this dynamic duo ‘We like to conjure up (the image) of a smoky old bar’ JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pqbnews.com
Blue Moon Marquee is a little band with a big sound. The duo, which features A.W. Cardinal on vocals and guitar and Jasmine Colette as the entire rhythm section, will bring their unique playing style to Lazy Mike’s House of Music on March 19. “I’ve never really seen (our set up) before,” said Colett, who sings while playing the stand-up bass with her hands and drums with her feet. “We have an interesting spin on it.” The duo’s dexterity gives fullness to their original compositions, which Colette describes as a blend of delta-style blues, swing, elements of early jazz, gypsy jazz and a modern energy. According to a news release from the group, Blue Moon Marquee’s sound is influenced by artists such as Lonnie Johnson, Blind Willie Jonson, Charley Patton, Howlin’ Wolf and Django Riendhart. “I really liked the style of mu-
sic they were doing,” said Lazy Mike’s co-owner Mike Mallon, who mentioned that the venue has yet to see a group like Blue Moon Marquee. “We like to conjure up (the image) of a smoky old bar,” said Colette. “A hole-in-the-wall, murky old jazz club.” Colette also said that her and Cardinal’s music tends to bring out a sense of nostalgia in a “huge demographic.” “It has a warm-place in so many people’s hearts,” she said, explaining that somehow the music makes “you feel like you’ve heard something like it before.” The duo has been perfecting their sound for nearly three years now. Cardinal and Colette, who are both self-taught musicians hailing from Alberta, joined forces in 2012 after he spent several years performing in Montreal and New York City and she toured much of North America with musicians including Bill Bourne. They were originally billed under A.W. Cardinal’s name, but formed their current identity shortly after they starting to write songs together. Blue Moon Marquee has also

been on the road about as long as they’ve been playing together. They’ve completed four provincial tours of BC and Alberta, one of the North and two national tours, sometimes bringing up to six musicians onstage with them. “We’ve been such gypsies,” said Colette.
And while the duo just moved to Vancouver Island, Colette said they’ll be touring around the Island and elsewhere again before too long. “We just want to play,” she said. If you’d like to hear their music, or find out where they’ll be playing after Lazy Mike’s, visit
bluemoonmarquee.com Tickets to all house concerts cost $15 and can be purchased at the door or reserved by phone at 250-594-9951. Doors open at 7 p.m. and music starts at 7:30 p.m. There are also $3 eats, drinks and treats available for sale at each show.

Crossfitters aim to be world’s fittest Local gym members compete to see where they fit within the wide CrossFit world T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
CrossFit Qualicum Beach hasn’t even been open for a year, but members are looking to make waves in the CrossFit Open, which kicked off at the end of February. The CrossFit Open is the first step in trying to qualify for the CrossFit Games, which are held in California, to name the fittest man and woman in the world. CrossFit QB has 12 members participating and over the next five weeks, they will take part in challenges to see where they rank. The open leads to the regionals, then to the CrossFit Games. Though none of the members are attempting to make the games, they’re excited to get their scores to see where they fit within the region. “It’s pretty exciting to see with everyone,” owner Lucas Bugg said. “We get together every Thursday for the next five weeks and what they’ll do is give two exercises on a live show and that’s the challenge for the week. So we all get together and have our members complete the workout over the next few days to get their score submitted.” CrossFit, which was developed by Greg Glassman over several decades, as a way to define fitness in a meaningful, measurable way. With 10 skills used to measure fitness (cardio, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy),

“Pink,” as she’s known to everyone in the gym, working on her technique prior to the open challenge for the week at CrossFit QB.
CrossFit is about working on each area. “The nice thing about it is there isn’t a lot of machines in here,” Bugg said. “Be-
ing locked in to one particular range of motion makes it so that you lose all the things that are good about using your
whole body for an exercise. Basically taking things that you can apply to everyday movements in life.” With over 50 members signed on to CrossFit QB, the club is making great strides in their first year. “Things have been going real well,” Bugg said. “Like any business, there’s that initial influx at the beginning but things are going well. We’ve been getting great feedback from our members and they’ve been letting their friends know about us too.” There is a wide range of members at CrossFit QB, from five years old all the way up to 80, but it’s a great family and community atmosphere inside “the box” according to Bugg. “It’s a great, positive vibe in here regardless of who’s in here,” Bugg said. “Whether it’s the young kids or the adults, everyone that’s here are supporting one another in their work that’s being put in.” “When we’ve got someone that might be done quickly compared to the rest of the group, that’s the first person standing there and cheering everyone else on. It feels like a family thanks to the great people we’ve got in here and the people that they’ve shared their experiences with, who in turn have come in to check us out and see what we’re all about.” For more information, you can contact CrossFit QB at 250-594-9990 or by e-mail at lucas@crossfitqualicumbeach. com.

Local product Brayden earning golf titles Tyson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
Qualicum Beach’s Brayden Eriksen has been lighting it up on the links for Utah Valley University (UVU), which saw him nab the Western Athletic Conference ‘men’s golfer of the
week’ title for the second time this season. Eriksen, a senior at UVU and graduate from Kwalikum Secondary School, finished tied for second in the Loyola Golf Invite tournament. He shot a four under par score of 212 in three
rounds of play, shooting under par in two out of three. Eriksen’s score helped propel his team, the Utah Valley Wolverines, to a tournament victory by six strokes over the Utah Utes and Gonzaga Bulldogs.
FINAL
“Brayden’s on a roll right now,” said UVU head coach Chris Curran. “He was a big reason the team won at Loyola. He’s a great kid and works extremely hard. It’s very nice to see him finding success.”
So far this season, Eriksen has earned two top-three finishes in tournament play and has captured the WAC men’s golfer of the week two times as well. — with files from UVU athletics

Make sure to change the date on your calendar as the ‘Rumble at the Rink’ has been moved from May 2 to May 23 at Frank Crane Arena. Gloved Up Promotions made the decision to change dates due to another fight taking place the same evening as the original date (Floyd Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao) and will now host their night of fights on May 23. It’s just one of the few bumps in the road that can occur, according to Terry Strawson of Gloved Up Promotions, who is taking it all in stride. “Things happen,” Strawson said. “We’ve rescheduled the Rumble at the Rink. It’s still going to be an exciting night of fights and we’re working very hard to give the fans a great card

for a great show.” Another change to the show comes by way of the announcer, Barrie Eget, who took fans through each fight last summer and was slated to return to do the same again this May. Unfortunately, Eget has now signed on with both NBC and Spike TV and will be unable to attend the event. Strawson worked quickly and found a suitable replacement in Don Andrews, the voice of the B.C. Lions of the CFL. “Barrie is devastated about it,” Strawson said. “We’ve had so many ups and downs and that was one of those moments that just got to me. Thankfully we were able to get in touch with Mr. Andrews and bring him on board, so that’s going to be very exciting for us going forward.”

Still putting the final touches on solidifying the card for the night’s events, Gloved Up Promotions has already made a huge announcement that will see the first ever Canadian boxer, Gord Racette, step into the ring and make history as he will fight in his fifth decade as a professional boxer and at the age of 63 no less. Another bout that fans will remember from last year is the fight between Alisah McPhee and Peggy Maerz, who will be returning for a rematch of their epic battle from last summer that saw McPhee with her hand raised in victory. This fight will also see the winner crowned the CPBC (Canadian Professional
Boxing Council) Western Canadian Champion. “The decision to promote Gordy’s fight was not one that we took lightly, but it is one we are comfortable with,” Strawson said. “If the athletic commission approve his application and he is cleared by medical staff to compete then who are we to deny his dream? He has an opportunity to go down in history alongside the likes of Roberto Duran. I think we have to respect that. If I’m honest, I’m fairly excited to be apart of it.” You can now pre-order tickets for the ‘Rumble at the Rink’, which are priced between $20-$60, with ringside seats going for $100, by calling 250-616-1070.
