Casino revenue dwindles

Mayor to sit on numerous committees Mayor Bill McKay will take on the lion’s share of political seats this term, according to a new roster of council appointments. Political appointments to the city’s boards and committees were announced by the mayor last week, with the heaviest assignment loads going to McKay and councillors Jim Kipp and Jerry Hong. According to McKay, tasks were assigned based on job demands and councillors’ interests. He took a lot of ‘fill ins’ for positions others weren’t keen on. Ten appointments in total have gone to the mayor, with half to external boards and liaison committees like the Tripartite Liaison Committee and Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce. Hong will have positions on the Regional District of Nanaimo board and six city committees – the highest number of internal seats given to any one councillor – including the new Youth Advisory Council, while Kipp saw most of his seven appointments to external groups. RCMP constables Jason Patovirta, of Port Alberni, left, Tim Venselaar, of Surrey, and Mat Watkin of Nanaimo confront a training officer, who asked not to be identified for security reasons, playing the role of a gunman during an active shooter training scenario at Dufferin Elementary School on Thursday.

Police officers train to take on school shooters BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEwS BULLETiN

When a gunman enters a school, casualties can mount quickly if police don’t respond immediately to remove the threat. RCMP officers from across the Island and Lower Mainland were at the former Dufferin Elementar y School last week conducting immediate action rapid deployment training. The course runs police officers through scenarios in which

they must respond as quickly as possible in two- and four- member teams to locate and apprehend a suspect or “active shooter” who has entered the school and begun harming students and staff. In such situations the first police on scene can’t wait for backup, but must move in as fast as possible to save innocent lives. Prior to the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, when two students killed 12 fellow students and staff

members and injured 23 others before committing suicide, standard police strategy called for deployment of an emergency response team that would start gathering intelligence once on scene – an ineffective strategy when someone is intent on rapidly killing as many victims as possible. The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn., that claimed the lives of 20 children, six adult staff and their assailant hap-

These are the general duty members, so they have the skills if the call comes in that they can get to the scene as quickly as possible and go in as teams of two, three or four, if necessary, and engage and deal with the threat.” photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Maintaining increased casino revenues wasn’t in the cards for the City of Nanaimo, which saw its cut drop six per cent last year. The City of Nanaimo’s share from Great Canadian Casinos was just under $2.4 million last year – a $154,000 decrease from 2013. It’s not the turnaround in revenue the city had banked on. As a casino host, Nanaimo gets 10 per cent of the cash flow from gaming tables and slots after prizes, providing the municipality with an alternative revenue that it’s used toward policing, social grants and the Nanaimo Museum. Since 2008 there have been yearover-year declines, with the city’s share falling from $3 million to $2.3 in 2012 – a pattern the casino blamed on competitive gaming and cautious spending as a result of the economic downturn. That losing streak stopped in 2013 when the city got $2.55 million in gambling dollars. It was $250,000 more than it had planned for, and it was considered a “safe bet” to assume it would see a similar share in 2014, according to Brian Clemens, the municipality’s director of finance, who said that turned out not to be the case. A new sex survey aims to make the case for subsidized birth control. Researchers have teamed up with the B.C. Women’s Hospital and Health Centre on the Canadian Sexual Health Survey, considered the first study of its kind to look at how women in B.C. plan for pregnancy, the use of contraceptives and barriers to birth control. Surveyors will be in Nanaimo this month to interview girls and women aged 14-49. According to Dr. Wendy Norman, principal investigator for the study, health professionals, advocates and government have met to talk about the difficulties some families have in timing and spacing their pregnancies but needed more information about the challenges women face. Firefighters prepare to conduct a search and relieve fire crews already working at a house at 238 Selby Street, which was gutted by fire Monday morning.

“I am not an expert in the field, so I couldn’t tell you what’s a trend and what’s a blip in casino revenue,” Clemens said. “I think that the fact that it went back down in 2014 will tell me that we need to be conservative as going forward in the future and not just

assume revenue will increase again.” The shortfall will be covered off by reserves, but as one of the alternatives to taxation, if the city plans on future casino revenue reductions, it means making up the difference elsewhere – including the potential for higher taxes

only cost the health care system, but “we know that children are healthier when their parents have been able to decide when they want to have them,” said Norman, who hopes the study will lead to health care policy that better supports women, including making contraception affordable.” “Once we are able to get this information from women it will support and provide evidence for government to make sensible polices to help women, such as potentially being able to subsidize contraception,” she said. Dr. Perry Kendall, provincial health officer, called it a “baseline survey” and part of a long-term, interventional study that will give hard, empirical data on costsavings for providing subsidized contraception. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Fire guts old house A house in flames drew a massive response from Nanaimo Fire Rescue Monday morning. Fire crews responded to the alarm just after 10 a.m. and found flames shooting from the windows of the house at 238 Selby St. The two-storey grey stucco, estimated at more than 90 years old, is owned by Terry and Linda Olson, who said the house was once a rental property, but had been boarded up for several years while they decided what they planned to do with it. Tim Doyle, Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant chief, confirmed firefighters had found no one inside the structure and said the department’s fire prevention division would investigate the cause of the blaze. Superstore shoppers vaccinated against Hep A

I

ISLAND HEALTH takes precautions due to rare case.

Shoppers who ate raw produce or unwrapped food from the Nanaimo Superstore over the last two weeks were urged by Island Health to get a hepatitis A vaccine. A public health alert was issued by the health authority last week, urging people to get immunized after a cashier tested positive for hepatitis A. Patrons were asked to get vaccinated if they bought raw produce or unwrapped

food that wasn’t further cooked from the grocery retailer during the late afternoon and evenings of Feb. 25-27, all day March 1, or the evening of March 4. Those who used the selfcheckout are not considered to be at risk and the alert doesn’t apply to food products from any other Superstore outlet. “We don’t see many cases of hepatitis A on the Island and even fewer where the person works in a job with the potential to expose large numbers of people like this,” said Dr. Paul Hasselback, Island Health’s medical health officer for central Vancouver Island.

Drop-in immunization clinics for Nanaimo Superstore employees and eligible members of the public were held over the weekend. There is a small risk that individuals who consumed raw produce or other unwrapped foods purchased late afternoon or evening of Feb. 5, 8, 12, 15, or 18 this year could have been exposed to hepatitis A but vaccination was not provided to those who bought food over those dates, according to Island Health, who said the time period for effective prevention has passed. Hepatitis A is a virus that affects the liver and can

spread through close personal contact, or contaminated food that has been handled by an infected person. Symptoms include fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, followed a few days later by dark-coloured urine, lightcoloured stools and jaundice. Any food purchased over the dates in the alert should be disposed of immediately and not consumed or returned to the Superstore. Island Health says the public can be assured it’s safe to now purchase and consume food from the Nanaimo Superstore location.

The easiest and most economical way to breathe new life into an existing laptop or desktop PC is to upgrade to an SSD. Today, most PC performance woes are the result of slow read and write speeds of the hard disk drive rather than a lack of CPU or RAM performance. Thus, replacing your hard disk drive with an SSD can speed up your PC by enhancing boot-up speed, application loading, and multi-tasking performance.

Solid-State Drives (SSDs) are a modern replacement for conventional hard disk drives. SSDs represent a giant leap in storage performance. With no moving parts, these new drives bring a high level of performance and reliability to PC storage at a fraction of the cost of the previous generation of SSD products.

Society stoked about science

DEPARTURE BAY elementary to house new centre. BY KARL YU The News BulleTiN

The Nanaimo Science and Sustainability Society (NS3) will kill two birds with one stone come Saturday (March 14) at Departure Bay Elementary School. The non-profit, which aims to increase science interest amongst children, will not only host a Pi Day science event, it will hold the grand opening of a science studio on the school site, an unused classroom rented from the Nanaimo school district. While happy to have a home base from which to operate, Liz DeMattia, NS3 co-founder and executive director, said it is part of the progression in the establishment of the science centre. “We started with summer programs and then we increased the programs with a mobile science van that took in-school and after-school programs to the schools ... this year we’re getting a small, interim studio and it’s just one of the stepping stones to a permanent centre,” said DeMattia. The studio will have a flexible schedule that will change over time. Initially, there will be drop-ins on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings. Spring break programs will be provided as well. Bridge and tower building and 3-D printing will be amongst the Pi Day activities and there will also be a fundraiser in the school gym, according to Morgan Attwell, NS3 outreach coordinator.

Let’s be honest, you can have everything in the world, but if you don’t have your health, you have nothing. Health is a journey, and every journey begins with a step: one small step. One small step and you’re that much closer to your goal. Are you ready to take your first step? Let’s get started! For years, health and nutrition experts have been warning that poor eating habits and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle are leading to an obesity epidemic. Obesity carries many health risks for adults and children, including: • Coronary heart disease • Type 2 diabetes • Cancers • Hypertension • And, stroke. All major health problems that doctors agree could be helped by losing weight. The trend these days is toward eating a more well-balanced diet that may make you gain weight and may not help you lose weight. Experts say, many of these issues are related to a dysfunctional pancreas. To lose weight effectively, the pancreas must work efficiently. That is exactly what the Ideal Protein diet was designed to do! Call and book your appointment today with one of our personal weight loss coaches to find out how this will work for you.

School budgets stretched thin School trustees across British Columbia advocate for more education funding year after year, but the province doesn’t seem to be listening. Not only that, but the government is demonstrating a lack of awareness about what’s going on in schools and administration offices. Last month, Premier Christy Clark suggested school boards grab a stepladder and start picking some “lowhanging fruit” to the tune of nearly $54 million over the next two years from district administrative costs. Later, Education Minister Peter Fassbender clarified that school districts must find efficiencies to get administrative costs down to six per cent, where they were 10 years ago, which requires 0.5 per cent savings this year and one per cent the year after. Most school districts already come in under six per cent on administration, including Nanaimo-Ladysmith at five per cent. Looking at provincewide figures doesn’t address the unique funding challenges in each of B.C.’s school districts, as the government should know if it’s been listening to trustees. If the ministry continues to believe that school districts can harvest savings in the budget, it should lead the way by showing where these cost cuts should be made. B.C. School Trustees’ Association president Teresa Rezansoff has been quoted as saying that Clark’s comments ignore the fact that school districts are already working together to save money and have been doing so for years. Bulk buying, sharing services – many of these measures have been tried with varying levels of success, depending on the district and the circumstances. Everyone hates waste, but instead of making off-the-cuff comments, would the premier please show school boards exactly where the hidden cache of cash is located?

The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith, V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

Manly was scheduled to be at Nanaimo city council last night to argue for increased protection for the region’s watershed. We might not have heard from MacDonald yet, but I’m sure the Tory war machine is in operational mode behind the scenes. We could see a Conservative MP in the region; Lunney held the seat in Parksville since 2000, and prior to that, the region has been represented by some incarnation of the Conservative Party since 1984. Not only that, but as the NDP and the Green Party divide up the progressive vote on the centre-left, it leaves a gaping hole for the Tories to slide right into. Then again, Trudeaumania 2.0 might hit the left coast before the summer is out. So how will this all play out? Well, I ran the scenarios through my Magic 8-ball (crystal is a little outside of a reporter’s pay range) and the answer kept coming up “reply hazy – try again later.” I’ll see you on the hustings. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

To the Editor,

British Columbia will finally start charging companies for taking our groundwater and bottling it to sell at a profit. The problem is it will only be charging $2.25 per million litres. Under this new pricing structure, corporations will be able to buy up B.C. water for next to nothing. Nestlé’s chairman says that water should have a market price. Apparently he thinks the market price for him is $2.25. That’s what our B.C. Liberal government has shamefully agreed to as a fair price for this precious resource. B.C. has some of the

purest, cleanest and most delicious water in the world. But Nestlé doesn’t think anything of sucking it out of the ground for a pittance and selling it back to us in a plastic bottle.

You can help by calling for public ownership of our community watershed and a Water Act that truly recognizes water as a critical part of our very survival. Remember, water is life. As we approach World Water Day on March 22, it is so very important for each of us to take action to protect our water resources, and in particular our watershed. but at the same time it was sad to see that sour-looking protest group with signs attempting to poison them with shame as the procession went by. For me this obsession to change the name of a parade is a form of mind control where one group uses the technique of repeatedly attaching misplaced guilt on someone in order to take authority over their moral compass. The British Empire as it was is past but it is the newly forming globalist empire of the west that threatens to impose economic and cultural imperialism on the rest of the globe through encouraging dependence, debt and by destabilizing autonomous nations through covert means and military interventionism.

To the Editor, I am sorry to see city council decided to take on the issue of a name of a parade and essentially attempted to blackmail the Empire Days parade organizers by withholding the yearly funds. This is a bad sign that council has caught the disease of political correctness and now is a pliable group overly susceptible to the sympathy of special interest groups rather than listening to the wishes and needs of the community on whole. It was nice to see such community enthusiasm in putting so much time in the costumes and the props for the parade to share with the community what it was like for people in the time of the British Empire. It was nice to see the little kids dressed up like their great, great grandparents,

To the Editor, Re: Empire Days name divides community, Letters, March 3. To make the excuse that the terrors of empire are but some side effect of all of their benefits is tantamount to suggesting that losing one’s head is a side effect of the guillotine and only goes to the blind and wilfully ignorant devotion commanded by any cult of empire. Perhaps in both perspectives the fear of the empire is the beginning of all wisdom, such as it is and as far as it goes. As George Orwell once said, “The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, but he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them.”

BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN

The last 365 days have roared by for country singer Jess Moskaluke. During that time the Saskatchewan native has released a full-length album, won a Canadian Country Music Association Award, had one of her singles become gold certified, earned two Juno Award nominations and has just kicked off a nationwide tour. “It is just so overwhelming in the best way possible,” she said. On April 4, Moskaluke, 24 will be performing with Chad Brownlee and Bobby Wills at the Arbutus Meadows Event and Equestrian Centre in Nanoose Bay. Her performance marks the end of the When The Lights Go Down tour, which began in Summerside, P.E.I. last week. Moskaluke was born in Langenburg, Sask., and began singing at an early age. “I just loved it,” she said. “I started doing some competitions and then it was just a natural growth from there.” This past summer proved to be a big one for the Saskatchewan singer. Moskaluke, who released her first full-length record, Light Up The Night last April, earned a CCMA Award for Female Artist of the Year and had her single Cheap Wine and Cigarettes certify gold by Music Canada, making her the first female Canadian artist to do so since 2004 when Shania Twain accomplished the feat with her single Party for Two. “Everything was so surprising,” she said. “Definitely nothing you expect. I am always of the mindset that if you expect something you’re feeling a little too entitled maybe. I would much rather be pleasantly surprised by those things and I really really was. I don’t think I have ever been more

Moskaluke said she was shocked to find out that she was nominated for two Juno Awards. “I was really shocked again,” she said. “It was a really special moment. It was hectic and scary. The nominees don’t find out before everybody else.” Although she is currently on the road, Moskaluke is

HOWARD WHITE reads from his father’s memoirs. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN

At nearly 101 years old, Frank White has no shortage of stories to tell. Born in the 1910s, White spent his early life working a number of blue-collar jobs, which includes working as a boat builder, home builder, excavating contractor, garage mechanic and waterworks operator as well as a truck logger in Nanaimo and Campbell River. Later in life, White married Edith Iglauer, a writer for the New Yorker and soon found himself travelling the world, attending celebrity dinners and watching opera. After being encouraged to share life experiences, White released his very first book, One-Log Loads: Memories of a Pioneer Truck Driver in 2013 at the age of 99. On Saturday (March 14)

White’s son, Howard White, will be reading sections from his father’s books, Milk Spills and One-Log Loads: Memories of a Pioneer Truck Driver and That Went by Fast: My First Hundred Years at the Harbourfront Library. Howard, who is the publisher of Harbour Publishing and Douglas and McIntyre and published his father’s books, said his dad is a natural at telling stories. “Dad is just a really good storyteller and we kept all the stories in his own voice,” he said. “It is going to be like listening to a 100-year-old man telling unbelievable yarns about the good old days.” Although the 100-year-old author won’t physically be able to attend the Nanaimo reading, those who attend the can expect to hear some stories about White’s time as a truck logger on Vancouver Island. “He has fascinating stories about his early days in Nanaimo,” Howard said. Passed gently on March 3, 2015, in her 99th year. Born to Frank and Jane Dawson in the family home on Selby Street on February 24, 1917, Dorothy was a member of a large coal mining family who emigrated from Yorkshire to Nanaimo in the 1870’s. Gone to be with her beloved family, she is predeceased by daughter Sheila (1953), husband Howard (1983) and daughter Avis (1996). Survived by daughter Zoe (Curt), grandchildren Colin (Madeline), Ann (Joey) and Bramley (Jennifer), and great grandsons Isaac and Brendan. Dorothy moved to Ladysmith in 1946 and spent many happy years raising her family and operating a fruit and berry farm with her husband for fifty years. Family gathering at a later date. Many thanks to the exceptional caregivers on Floor 4 at Kiwanis Lodge. With deep appreciation to Dr. Betty Feick for her years of compassionate and superb care.

KOTVAL, Minoo N. October 15, 1930 – February 22, 2015 Minoo passed away Sunday, February 22, 2015 following a brief illness. He leaves his cherished wife of 50 years, Vera, his daughter Kirsten, his sons Neville and Keith, and three especially impish grandchildren. Minoo was raised in Bombay, the son of Nariman and Banoo (née Kanga) Kotval. As a young man he went to sea, first landing in Scotland where he worked as a marine engineer for a dozen years before settling in British Columbia, where he worked as a mechanical and project engineer, and raised his family. Minoo was a 44 year resident of Nanaimo. He was an avid mechanic and woodworker who enjoyed his workshop and the tools in it, the house and garden, computers and the internet, and a hearty conversation with both long-time and newly-acquired acquaintances. He filled his minute – every minute – with sixty seconds’ worth of distance run. He will be sorely missed, always remembered, and forever loved. Sands ~ Nanaimo (250)753-2032

EDUCATION Choices Most popular and stable majors Many high school graduates continue their educations once high school ends. Thousands upon thousands of students trade in their hall passes and senior sweaters for syllabi, electives and core

classes in college. Recent graduates increasingly recognize the importance of a college degree, as holding a degree has become essential in today’s competitive workplace, since having any advan-

tage can mean the difference between establishing a stable career or struggling to make ends meet. Many graduates also recognize the importance of choosing a major that translates well in

the job market. Certain majors have historically been more popular than others among students. However, popular majors do not always make the best choices for jobs. The following are some of the popular majors and also majors that present the best track record for success and financial security. Popular undergraduate majors •Business Administration: According to the National Center for Education Statistics, of the 1,650,000 bachelor’s degrees conferred between 2009 and 2010, the greatest numbers of degrees were given in the field of business, and those numbers remain quite steady. Business administration graduates can find work in various industries. • Psychology: From psychologists to school therapists, the possibilities for work in the psychology field abound, making this a popular

choice for college students. Psychologists study how the mind works and what causes human behavior, but a psychology degree can land graduates work in some surprising fields, including advertising and public relations. • Health: Degrees in nursing and medicine will always be in demand. Medical careers continue to be some of the most stable, and the need for doctors and nurses grows with every passing year. In addition to medical degrees in the traditional sense, biologists and molecular scientists can be employed to research diseases and operations of the body and even research the connection between humans and the environment. • Education: With every generation of children comes a new crop of students who need to be educated. This makes education yet another popular career path. • Communications: Holding a

communications degree opens up various career paths. It is a broad degree that can lead to careers in journalism, marketing, broadcasting, or television production. • Computer science: Computer hardware and software continue to play integral roles in daily life. Career opportunities in computer science include working on everything from robotics to developing applications for tablets and mobile phones. Best majors for finding work Some of the more stable and well-paying college majors are not necessarily the most popular ones among students. • Education • Engineering • Math Certain majors are popular, but others do better in the real world. Understanding the difference can help students choose the best options when selecting a major.

Choices

How to help high schoolers choose the right college Choosing a college or university is the first big decision of many teenagers’ lives. A youngster’s choice of college can impact the rest of his or her life, and it’s important that kids recognize the gravity of this decision. Many kids, in particular those who realize the impact that their choice of college can have on the rest of their lives, are overwhelmed when colleges begin sending information about their programs and campus life. Such information, especially when it is unsolicited, may begin to arrive at the dawn of high school student’s sophomore year, long before many teenagers have begun to think about where to pursue their educations after high school. But as daunting a task as choosing a college may seem, teenagers should enjoy the process, as the choice of where to go to college is unlike any other decision many students will make for the rest of their lives. Parents also can ensure the process goes more smoothly by helping their kids find the right school. That’s especially true for parents who have already been through the process with an older child. But even parents going through the process for the first time can take the following steps to help youngsters find the right college. • Discuss finances with kids at the outset of the selection process. While the choice of where a student goes to college should ultimately rest with that student, it’s important that parents explain their financial situations to their kids at the outset of the selection process. Explain how much you can contribute toward tuition and fees, and explain the differences between loans and grants. Some kids may expect their parents to foot the entire bill for their education, but such situations are increasingly rare thanks to the rising cost of a college education. Make sure kids know the financial obligations they will be taking on should they take out loans to pay for their education. • Ask kids to list fields of study they may want to pursue. While incoming college freshman do not necessarily need to choose a major upon enrolling, kids

who know their interests and what they may want to one day do for a living may be more likely to find the right college or university for them. Parents can ask kids to write down a list of their interests, including potential career interests. This can help kids narrow down the list of colleges and universities they are considering. For example, if a student is interested in engineering but a university on their list does not offer an engineering program, then that school can be eliminated. Kids who list multiple potential fields of study may benefit by choosing a larger school with more available programs. This can allow them to pursue more than one major or even switch majors without transferring to another school. • Visit campuses. Student-athletes who hope to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level may be limited to a certain number of official campus visits, but nonathletes face no such restrictions. While college is first and foremost about getting an education, it’s also an opportunity to grow as a person. Campus visits can give kids a feel for campus life, which varies considerably between colleges, and that feel can help them determine if a given college or university is somewhere they’re liable to feel comfortable over the next several years. Parents can accompany kids on campus visits and ask questions their kids may not know to ask but will certainly be glad to know the answers to. Traveling to various campuses can be expensive, so parents might want to delay campus visits until kids have narrowed down their lists of potential colleges. • Stay involved. Some kids may succumb to the pressure of choosing a college and detach themselves from the process as a result. While taking periodic breaks from talking about college can benefit both kids and their folks, parents should not allow such breaks to go on for too long. Stay involved in the process so kids continue to approach it with the right attitude. If kids appear to be struggling with their decision, act as a sounding board for them so they can let off some steam and clear their heads.

It’s a big step from high school to university. We can get you there.

Clippers challenged in series I BULLDOGS WIN 5-4 in overtime to force Game 5.

Sunday’s men’s final was closer, with Will’s Cranbrook team eventually running Chilliwack’s Doug Marshall out of rocks to secure a 7-5 victory. It was a repeat win for Will and company, who rolled through the tourney with a 7-1 record. “It’s always great to win the heart,” said the skip. “The team played great. We had the odd miss but we hung in there … We just persevered.” Gerald Kent threw fourth rocks for the winning rink and Laddie Pavlis and Peter Sweetman are the other members of the team. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

THE NEWS BULLETIN

GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Nanaimo Clippers forward Jacob Hanlon tries to get around Alberni Valley Bulldogs opponents on a rush in overtime of Game 4 Saturday at Port Alberni’s Weyerhaeuser Arena. The home team won 5-4.

Sheldon Rempal deflected in a shot to make it 4-2 and the score held until late, when goalie Guillaume Decelles left his crease to handle the puck and got caught out out of position. Alberni capitalized on the turnover, then potted the tying marker 11 seconds later. “That was the goal that was a tough one for me to take, because

I thought we were ready for that situation,” Vandekamp said. “We had the five guys ready that we wanted to have on the ice in that situation.” The Clippers responded in overtime, forechecking the entire time, rolling through their lines, generating chance after chance. “You look at all the opportunities we had

– penalty shots, breakaways, power play opportunities, the ones in overtime – we didn’t bury enough of our chances,” Vandekamp said. “I guess that ends up being a bit of the storyline.” He said his guys are resilient and will be ready to go in Game 5. “You have to work for things in life and this is no different,” he said.

“We’re going to have to dig our heels in and play a good hockey game.” GAME ON … Game 5 was played Monday at Frank Crane Arena after press time. Game 6, if necessary, would be Tuesday (March 10) at 7 p.m. at Weyerhaeuser Arena and Game 7, if necessary, would be Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Masters curling champions crowned

GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Karen Lepine throws a stone during the Curl B.C. masters championship final Sunday in Nanaimo.

All the teams at the masters championship played with heart, but two teams now get to wear their hearts on their sleeve, literally. Karen Lepine and Ralph Will and their teams won Curl B.C.’s masters championships on Sunday at the Nanaimo Curling Centre and advance to nationals. Lepine, from Langley, and her teammates Susan Beuk, Agnes Sigurdson and Donna Christian, defeated Sandra Gallaway of Comox 11-3 and finished the event with an 8-1 record. “We stayed together,” Lepine said. “We had the one bad

game and we talked about it and came together and communicated and it was really good.” Lepine, a former champ, said she’s been wanting to get a nationals heart patch for her sister, who plays third, and it happened Sunday. “Her eyes were pretty big; that was pretty nice,” Lepine said. She said the Nanaimo Curling Centre did a fantastic job of hosting the event. “Everybody’s so friendly and warm and it just makes you feel like part of the group when you walk in the door,” she said.

VIU Mariners win provincial championship The VIU Mariners needed to give everything they had to win a championship. Va n c o u v e r I s l a n d University’s men’s basketball team won the PacWest title on Saturday after an exciting, exhausting weekend in Abbotsford. VIU beat the Langara Falcons 82-76 in the final after getting past the Douglas Royals 89-82 in the semis. “There’s something special about this group. We’re not always the most disciplined of groups, we have some interesting players and interesting characters,” said Matt Kuzminski, VIU coach. “But the one thing about these guys is they have a ton of heart and they never give up and when things seem to be as tough as they can be, they always pull through.” The Douglas game saw VIU on the ropes, down as many as nine points late, but the Mariners found a way. Justin King scored 34 points and Jerod Dorby added 15. It was a draining game, mentally and emotionally, said the coach, but the M’s found enough for the next day’s final. The game was tied going into the fourth quarter and the Mariners were “locked in,” the coach said. “Our whole thing was, don’t try to focus on the score or don’t even focus on winning the game, because sometimes it can seem like a daunting task. Just focus on the small things – getting a good shot or getting a stop. Then it seems a little more doable.” King led his team with 19 points before suffering an injury late. Chris Parker scored 18, Kadeem Stewart had 12 and Dorby had 11 points and 11 rebounds. King was chosen MVP and Dorby and Jason Fortin were tournament all-stars. VIU’s women’s basketball team earned bronze, beating the Camosun Chargers 57-44.

BY GREG SAKAKI

The most exciting game of the playoffs so far didn’t go the Nanaimo Clippers’ way. The Clips fell 5-4 in overtime to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Saturday night at Weyerhaeuser Arena in Port Alberni. Nanaimo was in position for a series sweep, leading Game 4 by a 4-2 score with two minutes left in regulation, but surrendered goals on back-to-back shifts. Nanaimo totally dominated the overtime frame, but former Clippers player Eric Margo scored on a long shot in the dying seconds of OT. “It’s disappointing, obviously, but you learn from it…” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach. “We knew it wasn’t all going to be easy. Not everything’s going to always go smoothly.” The teams traded goals in the first period, with Brendan Taylor deking out Bulldogs goalie Billy Christopoulos to open the scoring. Spencer Hewson a pass in the slot and made it 2-1 early in the second, then Nicolas Carrier crashed the net and made it 3-1.

Pirate gets glimpse of big leagues

I

JOSH BURGMANN could throw against Toronto Blue Jays. BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN

GREG SAKAKI/ThE NEwS BullETIN

Nanaimo Pirates pitcher Josh Burgmann is headed to spring training in Florida this week as a member of Baseball Canada’s junior national team program.

Forget looking up at his big league heroes. A Nanaimo teen might get to look down at them, from up on the mound. Nanaimo Pirates pitcher Josh Burgmann is headed to St. Petersburg, Fla. this week for Baseball Canada’s junior national team training camp. It’s going to be a special experience for the righthanded hurler, who just turned 17. Canada’s junior team plays 11 games over 12 days, eight against Major League Baseball clubs including the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays. “Oh man, it’s going to be

pretty cool, seeing all these guys and what they go through and what they do during the day and how they approach the game,” Burgmann said. He imagines taking the mound against Jays slugger Jose Bautista. “That would be pretty cool to step out there and pitch against that guy.” Burgmann has been a top prospect for years, making the Canada Summer Games in Grade 9 and also competing at the Baseball Canada Cup. The junior national team is an even bigger step. “It’s a true honour and a blessing, really,” Burgmann said. “Representing your own country on a national level is something that you would dream of doing your whole life.” As he helps the junior national team, being on the

team will help him, individually. Burgmann wants to keep working on every facet of his game, he said, “throwing all my pitches for a strike, staying composed, having a good mound presence and just being the best pitcher I can be all around.” Between his travel with the junior team and attending Vauxhall Academy of Baseball in Alberta, Burgmann’s B.C. Premier Baseball League innings will be limited this spring, but the Pirates will be happy to have Burgmann whenever they can get him. Pirates manager Doug Rogers said the pitcher is a great kid and a good team guy whose love for the game rubs off on everyone. “I come back late June, so I’m just hoping to do my part and help the team win when I come back,” Burgmann said. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Classes inspire confidence in budding artists I students host art show of work created in parks and rec programs. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

onfidence building is an important part of the art classes Marilyn Ridsdale teaches. Ridsdale, an instructor for city parks, recreation and environment department art courses at Oliver Woods Community Centre, said increasing her students’ confidence is something that matters to her. In terms of her experimental acrylics painting class, she said she wanted to create an atmosphere where participants could relax and learn. “I’ve had people say they haven’t drawn since they were in school because they felt they were inadequate and that type of thing and I really felt there was a reason why they came here. It was a chance to start again or start for the first time, but they didn’t want to be overly criticized,” said Ridsdale. While Ridsdale said she is nurturing at the outset, she increases constructive criticism to match her students’ increase in proficiency. “After they’ve come for a while, then I sort of increase the critiques and [add] a little bit of pressure on them because as they progress, they need that,” Ridsdale said. Joan Mayzes and Pat MacKay, students in Ridsdale’s experimental acrylics class, have long had an interest in painting and the classes have augmented their skills and given them confidence. Both will showcase their work at the 2015 Art Show and Sale at Beban Park social centre on Saturday (March 14). “You see other people and what they do and you think, ‘Oh, I could

do that too,’ and you try it and try it at home,” said Mayzes when asked about how the courses have built her confidence. “I think it’s great,” said MacKay when asked about having her work displayed at the show. “It gives us something to aim for and you know

there are a lot of very, very good painters on this Island.” Ridsdale said the art show has been on hiatus for a few years, but it aids in her students’ development. “It’s very hard to take your precious little thing that you’ve worked on and put it out there for people to see ...

it’s a big step and if you’re hoping to one day sell your work in a gallery, or even just showing it to friends, it’s that ability to take it out there, put a name on it, put a price on it and just have it sit there and let the public see it,” Ridsdale said. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

With Miracle-Ear, You’ll Hear Everything… Even The Things You’re Not Supposed To! “My boys” found a “listening device” hidden on one of my warehouse employees. Surprised they found it. It was almost invisible. Turns out it wasn’t a wire. It was a Miracle-Ear hearing aid! This incredible state-of-the-art, micro-digital technology is fully-programmable. The one he had was designed to fit INSIDE his ear canal. In my biz, I can’t afford to miss any of the action around me. I’m going to be paying someone at Miracle-Ear a little visit. I strongly suggest you do the same. The technology has changed so much over the years…it’s smaller than a wire, nearly impossible to see! –The BOSS
