Panther Cheer hosts Mardi Parti Pac-West nationals in Portland next challenge for Richmond cheer teams by Don Fennell Sports Editor For the last three years, Richmond’s Panther Cheer has provided a venue for the province’s top cheerleading teams to test their mettle and programs in elite company. And to have fun. Last Saturday, at the Richmond Olympic Oval, was no exception. Featuring cheer teams from both University of B.C. and Simon Fraser University, the Mardi Parti was a show of skill beyond compare. “This year’s event showed tremendous growth with representation from every cheer program in B.C. in attendance,” said organizer Stephanie Kennedy. “As well, it has the most number of prep teams in attendance at any event this season. This is a new category and there were 14 teams with athletes ranging from three to 17 years old. The future is
bright.” For Panthers, Mardi Parti—attended by some 3,000 athletes in all— was a key event in their competitive season. “We are taking our two elite Level two teams and our Level 4 teams to Portland on Thursday to attend the Pac-West National Championships and this was our last chance to get feedback from judges,” said Kennedy. “We had a great showingall of our teams placed in the top two in very deep divisions.” Other highlights included the Panther youth team winning the Level 1 Grand Championship (highest scoring team out of all age divisions, a total of 45 teams!) and our Open team winning grand champions of Level 6 (a total of four teams including UBC and SFU). In addition, Panther Kaitlyn Buhler was awarded a $1,000 scholarship for her outstanding academic achievement and community service involvement.

Sockeyes’ run ends suddenly Grandview upsets Richmond in first round by Don Fennell Sports Editor Minoru Arena morphed into Heartbreak Hotel for the Richmond Sockeyes Monday night. A late third period seeing-eye goal by Cam Ginnetti provided the difference as the upstart Grandview Steelers edged the Sockeyes 3-2 in Game 7 to complete a first-round upset in the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs. Richmond had finished 17 points clear of Grandview in the standings. In many ways the game was a microcosm of the series. Close throughout, each team took turns setting the tone. But like the path the series itself took, neither was able to gain much of an edge and certainly not a sustained one. Richmond coach Judd Lambert accurately forecast how the series would unfold. Prior to Game 1, after which the Steelers skated off Minoru ice with a 4-2 victory, he said: “It’s important for us to capitalize on our scoring chances and fight through any of the physical play.” He added the team that was more committed to play its style of game stood the best chance of advancing. For the Sockeyes, that meant skating hard and playing the majority of the game in the Steelers’ end of the rink. Instead, it was the Steelers who were able to clog up the neutral zone to slow the Sockeyes’ offensive forays while effectively
converting their own scoring opportunities with a seemingly endless supply of blue-collar hard work. The Sockeyes were also plagued by injuries— most notably their ace difference maker. Troy Kaczynski, who was the league’s leading scorer during the regular season with 41 goals and 74 points in 40 games, was able to suit up for just a single game in the play-
offs. His absence speaks for itself. While it may be difficult for the Sockeyes to see the positives right now, the 2014-15 season was filled with many highlights. A team that featured 13 rookies finished just a single point back of the North Vancouver Wolf Pack for the best record in the league. And their 32 wins in 44 games equalled that of the Wolf Pack.
