WOMEN’S DAY SUNDAY

The first debate Federal candidates meet to discuss women’s issues JOHN HARDING

editor@pqbnews.com

Local residents will get their first opportunity to see and hear from the people who want to represent them in the House of Commons through an International Women’s Day-inspired forum Sunday in Parksville. Organized by the Parksville Qualicum branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), the forum will feature three candidates for the new riding of Courtenay-Alberni, but not Conservative John Duncan. Gord Johns (NDP), Carrie Powell-Davidson (Liberal) and Glenn Sollitt (Green) have confirmed their attendance, said local CFUW president Perry Perry. “They will be asked to define the issues they think women and girls in our riding face,” said Perry. “And then they will be asked what investments should be made to address these issues.” The forum will be moderated by Mary Ellen Campbell. Qualicum First Nation Chief Michael Recalma will provide introductions and there will be an opportunity for questions from the floor, said Perry. The forum starts at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8 — International Women’s Day — at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre. Duncan’s campaign manager Dick Clancy confirmed Duncan, the government whip, will not attend. Perry said Duncan is welcome to participate in the forum if his schedule changes. The local branch of the CFUW has 75 members, said Perry, who also identified some issues affecting local women. “Women (here) face tremendous challenges in their lives as parents finding affordable child care,” said Perry. “And Canada is not a leader in putting women in Parliament.”

LOCAL MOUNTIES FACING CHARGES

Should they still be on the job? CANDACE WU

news@pqbnews.com

The head of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association is questioning why three local Mounties are still on active duty nearly two years after an alleged incident in Oceanside cells that has the officers facing charges. “Police are entitled to a fair process, but when they are being actively investigated for crimes, they should not be responsible for enforcing the law,” Josh Paterson, BCCLA executive director/lawyer, told The NEWS in an

e-mail. “When an officer is being investigated for potential criminality, they should not be on public-facing enforcement duties because it raises a question in the public’s mind as to whether they can appropriately do their job in upholding the law.” Last Tuesday, the Criminal Justice Branch of the Ministry of Justice approved charges against three Oceanside RCMP officers — Const. Scott Kennedy Jones, Cpl. Michelle Rene Lebrun and Const. Mick Don-

ald White — for assault with a weapon. The incident is alleged to have happened June 10, 2013 in Parksville’s detachment cells, where the police officers allegedly used oleoresin capsicum spray, commonly known as pepper spray, in a manner that allegedly constituted excessive force. Paterson said “it’s important that the police be held accountable if they break the law.”

Scott Tanner at home, making progress

AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

Former Qualicum Beach town councillor Scott Tanner’s cancer is gone — for the moment, he stresses. In late September Tanner was on council, days away from submitting his papers for the November municipal election, when he had a severe seizure that appeared a lot like a stroke. He was rushed to hospital where it was discovered he had brain cancer, which he spent months receiving treatment for in Victoria. He returned home to Qualicum Beach about a month ago and has continued receiving physiotherapy in Nanaimo twice a week. He said his most recent MRI scan didn’t show any cancer and everyone is “amazed with my recovery.” He still struggles some with speaking but said, “they keep giving me harder and harder challenges to do and I’m able to do them.”

Cancer society looking for volunteers

The Canadian Cancer Society needs another 100 door-to-door canvassers in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area for the crucial Daffodil Month fundraising push in April. “We’ve had a lot of long-term canvassers taken down by longterm illness,” said coordinator Hugh Baker, who highlighted the tireless work so many community volunteers do. A few years ago they would get as many as 250 people going door-to-door raising funds and awareness. Last year that was down to 150 and this year they have less than 50 signed up. If you would like to help, e-mail Baker at hugbak@gmail.com or call 778-441-2767. — NEWS Staff

Catspan volunteers believe it’s time to move this colony of about 30 cats living on private property in Nanoose Bay.

CATSPAN NEEDS SOME HELP IN NANOOSE BAY

Cat colony has to go Moving this amount of cats is a laborious and expensive proposition, says Catspan JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

Catspan is looking for the public’s help as it deals with a colony of 30 feral cats on private property in Nanoose Bay. Efforts by the group have reduced the longstanding colony from a high of 80 cats a couple of years ago, but Catspan volunteers believe it’s time to deal with this situation once and for all. “We really feel the cats have to be moved,” said Catspan director Barbara Seeley. “There are a lot of neighbours who are really supportive, but there are some neighbours who would sooner see the cats move on.” “(The people of this region) are pretty good at helping each other out and we need some help from the community.” Moving this amount of cats is a laborious and expensive proposition, said Seeley. Each cat needs to be trapped individually, taken to the vet for a check-up/shots/spay-neuter and then, it is hoped, matched with a good home.

She said the whole process, even with the help (discounts) of Parksville Animal Hospital and not counting the amount of time and effort put in by volunteers, could cost $3,000, or $100/cat. Seeley said the owner of the property in Nanoose Bay has been in hospital and no-one has resided at the site for a couple of years. She said Catspan had permission from the owner to go on the land and feed the cats, which it has been doing now for years. “This has been an intense and emotional issue for CatSpan volunteers, who have helped these cats for years,” Seeley said. “Relocating such a colony is inherently risky, but we have no choice. These cats need a home. Ideally a rural property or properties, away from highways and dogs. Perhaps a hobby farm, or a small portion of land in a discreet area. Most of these cats are eight-10 years old, and deserve to spend the remainder of their lives in safety.” If you would like to help Catspan, with your time or money, here’s the contact info: CatSpan, PO Box 64, Nanoose Bay, B.C., V9P 9J9. Phone: 250-821-1867 or e-mail: nanoosecatspan@gmail.com. You can find more information about feral cats at: www.catspanferals. com.

SATURDAY IN QUALICUM

Woman airlifted to Victoria A Qualicum Beach woman was airlifted to Victoria hospital after a single-vehicle crash Saturday on the Island Highway. Oceanside RCMP said at 6:20 a.m. Saturday, Qualicum Beach Volunteer Fire Department, the B.C. Ambulance Service and the Oceanside RCMP responded to a serious single vehicle collision on Highway 19A, near Yambury Road. Police said a 32-year-old woman from Qualicum Beach was southbound on Highway 19A when she lost control of her vehicle, a 2000 Honda Civic, crossed over the oncoming lane and entered the ditch. She then continued down the shoulder and ditch for several hundred metres. She eventually struck a hydro pole, rolling the vehicle and coming to a rest. The woman was then extracted from the vehicle and taken to Qualicum Beach Airport, where she was taken by air ambulance to Victoria General Hospital. Police said she remains in hospital and is recovering from a fracture to one of the vertebrae in her neck. The Oceanside RCMP said they are continuing the investigation and are looking into all possible causal factors. — NEWS Staff

MP takes swipe at big banks James Lunney not happy with influence he believes was used re: law societies’ decisions on Trinity Western University grads

Nanaimo-Alberni MP James Lunney says the policies of some of the nation’s biggest banks influenced law societies to discriminate against a B.C. university’s law program graduates. Lunney stood in the House of Commons last week, according to a news release sent by Lunney’s office, “to draw attention to the astounding revelation that banks and big corporate interests under the rubric Legal Leaders for Diversity (LLD) have unleashed a concerted effort to exclude persons with religious conviction from economic opportunity in their organizations.” In the House he said: “Many Canadians are shocked that law societies across the country voted to discriminate against Trinity Western University law graduates. Compounding the alarm is the revelation that it is big banks and big money interests led by the Bank of Montreal that influenced the law societies. BMO and other large banks and corporations have been requiring legal and financial service contractors to reveal the ‘diversity metrics’ of their associates, partners and management teams. The initiative is branded ‘Legal Leaders for Diversity.’ Asking a prospective employee about their sexual preferences would be against the law. Denying economic opportunity to any individual or law firm based on religious belief is just as surely a charter violation.” “Canadians expect our banks and our leading corporations to respect the Charter rights and freedoms of all Canadians. We call on BMO and its recruits from corporate Canada to reverse this misguided initiative.” — NEWS Staff/MP Lunney news release

Campaign begins The annual Easter Seals Paper Egg Campaign will run from March 9 to April 5 as part of Easter Seals month. Funds go towards Easter Seals services in B.C. including their camps and Easter Seals House. From 2010 to 2013 the house provided more than 590 bed/nights to families from Parksville and more than 200 to families from Qualicum Beach. In 2014 two children from Parksville and one from Qualicum Beach attended the Easter Seals Camps, specialized summer camps for children with disabilities. It takes approximately $2,400 to send one child to camp. The $2 paper eggs are available at The Bargain Shop in Wembley Mall where customers can write their name in support of Easter Seals. Gala kicks off months of events

The Brant are back. Over the next two months, Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) Deep Bay Marine Field Station is celebrating with style. The marine station will be hosting boat tours, high tea, cooking classes, music by the bay and public lectures focusing on the Strait of Georgia during the annual Brant Wildlife Festival. More than 150 people attended the festival’s opening gala on Saturday in Parksville. “We’re thrilled to be part of the fantastic line up of events for this festival,” said the station’s facilities coordinator Stephanie Richards. “Once again, we’re offering people of all ages a chance to learn about wildlife and marine science.” The annual festival is a celebration of nature, particularly Brant geese as they rest and feed on the shores of Parksville Qualicum Beach. Field station staff will offer boat tours on March 11 and 14 to give the public a chance to view wildlife and see herring spawn in Baynes Sound. Tickets are $100 each and guests must pre-register by calling toll free 1-866288-7878 or e-mailing rrivers@naturetrust.bc.ca.

For kids ages six to 10, the field station will offer spring break marine biology camps from March 16 to 20. The cost is $55 per day or $250 for the week. A Family Day open house will be hosted on April 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature touch tanks, large public aquaria, face painting and other marine science educational activities. Admission is free. The field station’s popular High Tea By the Sea, including a selection of teas, sandwiches and treats, will be offered Tuesdays during March and April between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. On March 17 there will be a special St. Patrick’s day lunch while a special Easter High Tea will be served on March 31. Authors from the award-winning book The Sea Among Us will deliver public lectures about the Strait of Georgia every Thursday at 7 p.m. from March 5 to April 30 for $10 per lecture. For an additional $15 guests can indulge in a pre-lecture themed dinner at 5:30 p.m. The opening lecture is called How Did the Strait of Georgia Originate – The Geological Story of Our Inland Sea featuring Dr. John Clague speaking on March 5. VIU Honorary Doctorate recipient

Dr. Dick Beamish, a world-renowned scientist now retired from the Pacific Biological Station, will deliver a lecture on March 12 entitled The Strait of Georgia and its Fishes. Additionally there will be culinary classes throughout the festival: A Taste of India on March 8 and Chocolate Lovers on March 28. A Music By the Bay luncheon and concert will also take place on April 19 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (tickets $40) with the A Cappella Plus Chamber Choir performing “A Buffet of Choral Music: twelve years of musical fare.” Please note that advance tickets or pre-registration is required for all events except Family Day. VIU’s Deep Bay Marine Field Station is located at 370 Crome Point Road. It is a key research facility, public marine science centre and a popular tourism destination on Vancouver Island. This is the third year that VIU has participated in the Brant festival. For more information visit www.viu. ca/deepbay or call 250-740-6611. There’s now an app for that bus trip

Taking the bus in the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) just got easier for anyone with access to a computer, tablet or smart phone thanks to the expansion of an online transit trip-planning tool. According to a news release issued by the RDN, transit users now have access to the Transit Trip Planner, on

either Google or Bing maps, which is “a public transportation planning tool that combines the latest B.C. Transit schedule and route information with the power of existing, popular search engines.” The online planner is free of charge. “Transit customers are demanding user-friendly route information,” said

B.C. Transit president and CEO Manuel Achadinha. “This technology gives existing and new customers a convenient and simple to use tool to plan their transit trips.” The release states there were more than 2.6 million passenger trips on B.C. Transit in the RDN in 2013-14. — NEWS Staff/RDN news release

The Criminal Justice Branch also approved charges last week against Nanaimo RCMP Const. Tim Bedard for assault causing bodily harm in relation to an alleged incident that occurred in Nanaimo’s detachment cells in June, 2014. However, Bedard has been assigned to administrative duties since those allegations came forward. At a Parksville and District Chamber

of Commerce dinner last month, Staff Sgt. Brian Hunter said the Oceanside RCMP detachment has eight members funded by Qualicum Beach, 16 by Parksville and 13 by the Regional District of Nanaimo — a total force of 37 members. Three officers represent approximately eight per cent of the Oceanside detachment. Asked why the three local Mounties

with allegations of assault against them are still on active duty and how long each has worked for the RCMP, B.C.’s senior media relations officer Rob Vermeulen said “some of those questions will likely be addressed in court, we really can’t comment any further at this point.” The police officers in question are scheduled to appear in court March 17 in Nanaimo.

ANNUAL WOOD CHIPPING PROGRAM The City's wood chipping program will take place from April 7 through April 30, 2015. A schedule of the pickup areas is printed below. Only the following items are to be placed on the boulevard before 8 am, prior to the first date the chipper truck will be in your neighbourhood: • Branches with a maximum diameter of 6 inches (15 cm), stacked with the larger end of the branch or trunk facing the roadway. • Smaller shrub branches piled for ease of access by the chipping crew. Rocks, stumps and construction waste may cause injury to the chipper operators and must NOT be included in the piles. Please note that due to safety issues, materials such as pampas grass, yucca and clematis and wisteria vines cannot be chipped. These, along with other compostable vegetation, garden debris, leaves, and grass clippings may be taken to the Church Road Transfer Station (8 am to 5 pm daily). Piles containing these items will not be removed by the chipping crew. Piles must be limited to a size of 5 feet wide by 3 feet high, and only one pile per residence will be removed by the chipping crew. Please do not combine piles from multiple households as it is more difficult and time consuming for the chipping crew to take apart large piles for chipping than it is for them to handle smaller piles. When placing your chipping pile, please be sure not to obstruct your property’s City water connection box in the event access is required for maintenance. Burning issues

T

he wood stove debate in Parksville — one that’s likely to re-appear in surrounding communities — will not go away any time soon. There are those, in council chambers and elsewhere, who would support the total ban of all wood-burning appliances. They cite volumes of research, but their most effective argument is much more personal — smoke from wood stoves makes them sick. Like the cull of geese, this is not a fun topic for politicians, especially rookies. A couple of months into your first term as councillor and no matter which way you vote you will alienate or anger a large segment of the population. No one said this was going to be all rainbows and unicorns. There are going to be times when consensus building just isn’t possible. Councillors, indeed politicians at all levels, are forced to make tough choices — it’s in the job description. It’s hoped they will make these choices after doing research and listening to their constituents. Even that kind of homework does not guarantee an easy ride through a tough issue like burning wood. One of the arguments floated in a recent Parksville council meeting — it could be any jurisdiction, really — against a total ban on wood stoves was the possibility it might present financial hardship for some people who are already stretching every dollar just to feed themselves and their families. While it sounded like a fair point, we weren’t sure if it was true, so we asked someone in the know. “Many clients who access our Emergency Assistance Program use woodstoves to heat their homes in order to avoid high Hydro bills,” Lissa Alexander from the Society of Organized Services told us last week. “At least a couple of clients who access our Seniors Connection program also use woodstoves, and without a woodstove they would not be able to afford to heat their homes using gas or hydro electricity.” Retroactively ripping wood stoves out of houses just isn’t going to happen, so what kind of teeth could any new bylaw have in a community? A city or town or regional district would also face legal trouble if it tried to make the owners of existing wood stoves upgrade to cleaner-burning models, at the residents’ expense. So what’s left for local politicians to do? All we can see left for councillors is a ban on future wood stoves and we’re not sure that is going to help those who believe the current situation is unbearable. — Editorial by John Harding

Goose CULL sMArt iDeA ALL AroUND

I enjoyed the conversation on “the goose problem” and sometimes wonder what people are thinking about. When you travel the world you quickly learn that the Canada Goose is everywhere, and many places you cannot imagine. Let me put it this way: they are not on the endangered list and create problems wherever they are. Ducks need water for nesting and rearing their young, which is a big problem in some areas of the prairies, however the Canada Goose soldiers on in grand style. Geese moult every year, so catching them is not a problem. Take 25 per cent of the cost of cleaning up after them and put it toward feed to clean them out before the slaughterhouse and give them to the food bank. The city would save money and have clean parks and play areas. E-coli can be a huge problem with beaches garnished with goose droppings. The city would be saving money. There is no way this will impact the numbers of migratory geese. I cannot envision one negative thing created by culling birds in this manner that do not migrate and reside in Oceanside. I hope that common sense prevails on this goose cull and it is started with the moult of this year. BoB tritsChler Parksville

Re: Paul Reitsma’s recent comments on the accumulation of sick leave at city hall and its associated costs. Although it looks excessive to be able to carry over this much sick leave, one must take in consideration that by taking all available sick leave when you have a minor cold or other minor ailment, you force the employer to pay overtime for a person to take your place. Sometimes this may be a day off for the other employee and depending on the contract it may be double time or worse. So when this is calculated, in the grand scheme of the length of employment, it may

I would like to thank letter writer Anthonie Den Boef (The NEWS, Feb. 19) for reminding fellow letter writer Bernie Smith and I of the great deeds of Christian organizations. I would also like to remind him of the St.Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, the Spanish Inquisition and, of course, the residential schools in rural, northern Canada. It is always good to study history; it would be nice if that would teach us not to repeat it.

sions made by our Supreme Court. As an example, many of my colleagues in the resource industry were appalled by the court’s decisions regarding aboriginal title rights because they firmly believe those decisions will weaken Canada’s ability to be self-sufficient in essential metals and materials — but all those I have spoken to have not in any way indicated disrespect for the court itself. Second, Mr. Lombardo comes to the conclusion that Lunney is “not a fit representative for democracy.” I would only inform Lombardo that the fitness of an individual to hold office is decided by the electorate and for more than a decade within the federal riding of Nanaimo-Alberni, the electorate has cast more votes at each election for our present MP than for any other candidate of any other party. Apparently, the electorate believes otherwise — and their votes are the ones that count.

I read Steve Lombardo’s recent letter to the editor (‘Lunney and the court’, The NEWS, Feb. 17) with great interest, but I must disagree with the writer on two important points. First, he somehow comes to the conclusion that if MP James Lunney disagrees with a specific court ruling, somehow that infers Lunney is “attacking the court” and that he also shows “disdain for the court.” In my opinion, such statements are patent nonsense. Presumably, we live in a democracy where people, particularly our political leaders, are able to offer their opinions on various subjects and disagreements between honourable persons are not only encouraged but also represent a true strength of such democracies. Apparently, Lunney simply holds the belief that the court’s decision regarding the “right to die” was wrong according to his standards and he expressed that view. I have not heard him make a single negative comment regarding the integrity of the court itself. Many of us have disagreed with deci-

As a resident of Qualicum Beach, I often travel down Village Way to Highway 19A, so I of course travel through the intersection of Qualicum Road, and sometimes I even see one or two other cars in either direction in my round trip journey. A recent story in The NEWS reports a total of 15 accidents between 2009 and 2013. That is on average a whopping three accidents per year, or one every 121.66666666 days. Sure there may be a few more minor dings that both drivers decide that the accident is not worth reporting to ICBC, but I for one certainly cannot see that either the traffic volume or the accident rate justifies a roundabout. Also, last I checked, pedestrians have the right of way for crossing at any and every intersection or marked crosswalk in B.C. With the traffic volume I see, if a pedestrian senses that a car is not going to stop for them, perhaps he/she can wait the five or 10 seconds for the car to pass and then cross the street. Qualicum designer escaped hectic Yaletown

Heidi Schumann transformed a 1970s Nanoose house AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

Designer Heidi Schumann, owner of Design Details in Qualicum Beach, is always looking for interesting design challenges, which she found in a quirky Nanoose Bay house recently. Schumann has been designing homes for 25 years and relocated her studio to the Island about three years ago to get away from hectic Yaletown in Vancouver. “I wanted a change in lifestyle,” she said adding she now has two horses and while she’s worked all over the world she loves living and working in the mid-Island. She stumbled on her latest challenge while browsing local MLS real estate listings online. “Most wouldn’t believe, just from looking at the bright and friendly interiors, that this

house was originally dark and cramped feeling with detailing characteristic of the 1970’s, complete with shag carpeting, panelled wood walls, and a spiral staircase,” she said of the Wall Beach area house. She said that while most people would have had trouble seeing through the challenges, she jumped on it, bringing in her friend Susan Forrest, a realtor with Royal LePage. Initially she thought they would renovate and flip the house, but they decided to bring in her friend Michael who was looking for a place to set down his roots and open a home based yoga studio. “Michael waffled when he first walked into the house, as he couldn’t imagine what it could look like,” she said, and she and Forrest were prepared to buy it. The house was built in the 1970s in Vancouver, barged to its current location and put on stilts. To open up the house, the kitchen space was expanded into the second bedroom and they

reduced the wall between the living room and kitchen to a half wall, adding a Joel Berman glass structure as a privacy screen. Schumann shifted walls around and maintained a connection to the coastal surroundings with beach colours — from

driftwood-coloured laminate hardwood floors, to soft greypainted cabinets and beach glass tiles in the kitchen. She brought in the kind of unique products Design Details is know for, she said, and included some of the client’s per-

sonal items and pendant lights handmade by Parksville’s Robert Held. For more on Schumann and her studio visit www.designdetailsinc.com or drop by Unit 101-663 Beach Road in the Qualicum Beach village centre.

Bringing the outdoors indoors in QB

Ingrid de Jong takes her inspiration from nature, especially the local beaches and skies JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pqbnews.com

Ingrid de Jong has brought the outdoors into the Gallery@Qualicum Art Supply. “I get a lot of ideas from the beach,” said the Qualicum Beach-based artist. De Jong said she sees “nature’s design” on the shore and this inspiration can be seen throughout her small show at the gallery. The acrylic canvases are mainly covered in rocks, birds and sea and skyscapes. The work is semi-abstract, playing on the design and patterns de Jong sees on the beach but remains realistic enough for viewers to know what it is. Beside the blues, greys and other cooltones of her shore scenes, however, are select warmer pieces filled with flowers. “I love strong colour,” said de Jong, who focused on landscapes and florals before moving to the West Coast. “She obviously has the ability to paint all of these things,” said gallery owner

Bonnie Luchtmeijer. De Jong has a long history of painting; in fact, she still has a piece that she made at five years old. She decided to follow her passion through an education in art and French at SFU, UBC and L’école des

beaux-arts in Geneva. While this eventually led to a career teaching French and art at the elementary school level in the Kootnays, de Jong continued to paint regularly. She started a business in 1990 focusing on waterco-

lour and photography, and also started to submit her work to numerous shows. Funny enough, de Jong said it was exhibits in Vancouver that first brought her to the Gallery@Qualicum Art Supply several years ago. She visited the gallery on a side-trip to the Island between art shows on the mainland. De Jong said she liked the space so much that she inquired about doing a show in Qualicum. Since Luchtmeijer tries to keep the gallery as local as possible, de Jong jokes that “it’s Bonnie’s fault” she eventually came back to the Island to live. Of course, the option to have an oceanfront home was a big draw too. “Since I was a child I always wondered what it would be like to live on a beach,” said de Jong, who lives and runs her studio — IdeJ Artworks — at a home located on the shore. De Jong is one of the first artists to display work in the newly renovated gallery space at Qualicum Arts Supply. The shop recently expanded their art supplies section, thus changing the size and shape of the gallery. “I think it’s a good thing to change things up,” said Luchtmeijer, who also said that she’ll continue to “bring in new people (artists) all the time” to fill the gallery.

March 4 grad fundraiser

Bigger and better than ever Show will feature local fashions, and local dancers JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pqbnews.com

The Ballenas Grad Fashion Show is back. After a year’s hiatus, the major fundraiser will return on March 4, bigger than ever. In fact, the show will move out of the Whalebone Theatre into the Parksville Community and Conference Centre. “We thought we’d take it up a little notch,” said one of the organizers Lisa Oleksiuk. Around 30 students from the 2015 grad class will model fashions from Close To You, Covet, WabiSabi Boardwear, S.O.S., Shades of Green, Mod Apparel, Refresh, Silverwood’s, Wilde & Sparrow, Arrowsmith Bikes, Boathouse, Moore’s, Guava, Black & Lee, Bliss and Tip Top Tailor. Everyone’s hair will be done by Urban Edge Hair Salon. Oleksiuk said organizers continue to showcase products from local (and nearby Nanaimo) clothing stores as

a way to return the support these businesses give to grad. “It’s nice to give back to the community,” she said. Olesiuk also said that all spectators will have a great view of the models strutting their stuff on a set of risers. The evening will also include two performances by Innovative Dance Arts. “We thought it’d be fun to add another element to it,” said Olesiuk. “They’re a phenomenal dance group.” Prior to the entertainment, there will be approximately a half dozen local business showcasing products and services related to looking good. There will also be a raffle set up, with 10 tickets costing $5 and a large selection of prizes for the winners. Finally, there will be a table with information on the next grad fundraiser: the Ballenas Grad 2015 Run/Walk. Fashion show tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for seniors and free for children under 12. They can be purchased from Oleksiuk at 250-9516710, at Close To You or at the door. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Local charity ball coming soon Night can raise up to $10,000 for local charitable causes JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pqbnews.com

The Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach Sunrise will host its fourth annual Spring Ball on March 21 at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre. “It’s quite well received,” said chair of the committee Ron Stothers. The ball is a major fundraiser for the organization with all proceeds going to support local charitable causes. In the past, Stothers said some spring balls have raised over $10,000. “It works really well,” he said. The night starts at 5:30 p.m. for cocktails, followed by a three-course filet mignon dinner at 6 p.m. prepared by Qualicum Beach chef Stewart McTavish. “The food is great,” said Stothers, who added that there is some good

quality wine on the table too. Then the band Big Fun will strike up a night of dancing at 9 p.m. There will also be a large selection of door prizes, raffles and silent and live auctions at the ball. Stothers said some of the prizes include a seven-night hotel stay with breakfasts in Ibiza, Spain, a gourmet dinner with wine cooked by McTavish in your home, flights, spa certificates and grocery cards. After the party, there will be limo service home. Tickets to the event are $80 each or $750 for a table of 10, and must be purchased in advance. You can buy tickets in Qualicum Beach at The Shoe Inn, Captivating Details, Fresh ’n’ Fabulous Flowers and The Collective — Artists’ Studio & Gallery Place; in Parksville at Close to You, or at 250-752-0270. TENG, Norman Lloyd February 17, 2015 Born November 21, 1947 in Kelowna, BC. Norman passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family in Victoria, BC. Norm grew up in Victoria, BC with his Mom, Dad and 3 younger siblings. He met and later married Mary Francine (nee Rey) in 1970. He made a home with her in Victoria, where they raised a daughter and son together. He worked hard at many vocations. Norm started out tree planting for BC Forest Products at Caycuse before transferring to the BCFP sawmill on Gorge Rd., where he worked on the booms and later became an industrial electrician in the mill. When the mill closed in 1989, Norm started an electrical contracting company, which he ran successfully for many years. Following the sale of the electrical contracting company, he worked for a time at CFB Esquimalt as an industrial electrician and at the RJH on the electrical maintenance crew. Following that period, he became a general contractor and built houses in Victoria, Parksville, and Qualicum. Norm and Francine both retired and moved to Parksville. Norm was again working hard renovating their Parksville home when he became ill. He will be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend. He helped his children in their youth with their activities such as sports, and in their adulthood with purchasing properties, lending his practical and knowledgeable support. He was always present for his grandsons, particularly taking on spending an afternoon a week with one for some years. He made sure his Mom’s trees were pruned and picked, and companioned his wife through their life together. Norm loved getting out in the wilderness for camping, hunting, and fishing trips with family and friends. He was an avid reader and collector of videos and old pinball machines, spent time growing his own food and making his own wine, and was always interested in and working on new projects. He enjoyed coffee out or an evening at the pub with friends. He and Francine enjoyed their time together at their RV lot at Otter Pt., and looked forward to their winter vacations in Palm Springs. Norman is survived by and so sadly missed by his wife Francine, daughter Michelle, son Jacob, grandsons Joshua and Marcel, mom Faith, siblings Darrell (Anita), Janice (Barry) Taylor, Victor (Eileen), sister in law Megan (Rick) Quitley, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, other family, friends, and neighbours in Victoria, Otter Pt., and Parksville. It has been said that his dad Maurice, who passed away before him, and Norman are together now. He is also predeceased by his grandparents Victor and Viola Sallis, and John and Doris Teng. Special thanks and appreciation go out to so many people who helped Francine and Norman in the difficult last months and day of Norm’s life, including: Dr. Meadows at the Cancer Clinic in Victoria; Binder, RN and RJH; Dr. Dewer at RJH; Dr. Daly at RJH; Jonah, Resident at RJH; Kyle, RN at the ER, VGH; Jodie, RN at ICU, VGH; Ann, RN at VGH; Dr. Shaw at VGH; and Linda at the Accent Inn in Victoria. Cremation has taken place. There will be a gathering of family and friends in honour of Norman Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 2-4pm at Goward House in Victoria, 2495 Arbutus Road. MADDEN,

(nee TEXMO) May 11, 1936 – January 21, 2015

Charles John Arthur

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Chiquita Meredith Fridrich, of Winnipeg, on January 21, 2015 at the age of 78. Chiquita is survived by her daughter Georgia Valentonis Milne and her two grandchildren, Logan and Marina Milne. Also left to mourn are her siblings: brother Jerry Texmo, and sisters Mary Anne Sundstrom (Gerry) and Linia Texmo, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family in Canada, the U.S. and Germany. Chiquita was predeceased by her husband Erich Fridrich in 2002. Chiquita (or “Chickie as she was known to her friends and family) was a caring and nurturing wife, mother, grandmother, sibling and a great friend to many. She loved to cook and host visiting friends and family, as she was very kind-hearted and social. Her grandchildren Logan and Marina were very precious to her. She also loved to play cards, read, listen to her favourite music, as well as display her skill and creativity through knitting and crocheting. Chickie would always be depended on to help in whatever capacity she was able. She spent many years as a health care worker, which she enjoyed so much, was so well suited to, and was very appreciated by her clients. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private family interment at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined, instead if you wish please make a donation in Chickie’s name to your favourite charity. “Those we love do not go away, they walk beside us everyday.

Born August 9, 1924, passed away February 12, 2015. Forever remembered, deeply loved & sadly missed by his wife June, sons Harry & John (Rosa), stepsons Steve (Joan) & David Bentley, step grandchildren Thomas & Rachel Bentley. Granddaughter Valerie (Rob Campbell). Predeceased by grandson Johnny Madden & faithful dog Una. Charlie leaves behind extended family and many friends. Charlie spent most of his working years as a commercial fisherman, had a clay pot company that supplied Van. Nurseries and did bulldozing in W. Vancouver. He decided to build another fishing boat, the “MV Persistent teaching his boys how to fish. On his maiden voyage with his oldest son they rescued three crew members from their sinking boat. Charlie loved to reminisce about his experiences with excellent memory and a few choice swear words thrown in and if you were lucky when he was smoking fish or pickling onions you got some. Many thanks to his doctors and caregivers, No service by request. Donations to your favorite charity would be appreciated. Cremation and scattering of his ashes at sea as he wished. “I did not die A am a thousand winds that blow I am the diamond glints of snow I am the sunlight of ripened grain I am the gentle autumn’s rain When you wake in the mornings hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight Do not cry, I did not die.

New martial arts instructor Classes will teach “valuable lessons” about more than just self-defense T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com

tySon taylor Photo

Renshi Kevin Goode will be teaching jiu-jitsu and other martial arts at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre starting March 10.

Renshi Kevin Goode has been practicing the art of jiu-jitsu and martial arts for over 35 years and he is now looking to share his knowledge and experience with anyone wanting to learn in the Oceanside area. “I’m really looking forward to being able to share my love of jiu-jitsu and martial arts,” Goode said. “My goal as a teacher is to help everyone reach the pinnacle of their abilities and enjoy the personal success that comes along with it and be able to share it with others as well.” Goode, who moved to Parksville just a few years ago, will start teaching classes Tuesday and Thursday nights in March at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre. He’ll also be taking his teaching to schools in the area, teaching the basics of martial arts to students in P.E. classes. “Parksville is a beautiful place, but being a parent, I see the struggles kids have here,” Goode said. “Having

two kids in high school, I see the boredom that a lot of kids deal with and getting in to jiu-jitsu and the martial arts is a way to not only find something of interest potentially, but will also get them into the dojo where they can learn some very valuable lessons, not only in self-defense but in life as well.” The one thing Goode is really looking to share with everyone is humility. “Always be humble,” he said. He added that students need to be aware that “the more proficient they become, the more dangerous they can become. Staying humble will keep you aware of things like that.” Goode is a fourth-degree black belt in jiu-jitsu and he also holds a black belt in kenjutsu (art of the samurai sword), golden gloves in kickboxing and a second-degree black belt in taekwondo. In 2007, he was honoured with the prestigious title of Renshi, meaning polished instructor/masters’ teacher. Ultimately, Goode wants to open up a dojo in town. “Being able to give back always feels good,” he said. “You take a look at a lot of dojos and you’ll find people who’ve been there for years, who have been giving back for years thanks to those before them that did the same thing.” See teaching, page a30

ravensong breakers

The little swim team with a lot of heart T yson Taylor

sports@pqbnews.com

It’s the “little club that could.” The Ravensong Breakers swim team is making waves in the pool with each swim meet they attend despite their size. Compared to their counterparts, the Breakers is a small team of swimmers. They have 50 members, to be exact. That’s 27 swimmers less than Port Alberni has and about 400 less than the club from Nanaimo has.

Their success is thanks in part to the coaching from John Campbell, who’s been with the Breakers club for the past 15 years. “Our club is fortunate to have John as our coach,” said assistant coach Susan Thomson. “John is a gem and he’s not just incredible at coaching, he connects and cares about the kids. That speaks to the number of alumni we have that come back and offer to help out in any way they can, either in the pool or on the pool deck.”

Recently at the Vancouver Island Swim Meet, the Breakers placed fifth out of 10 teams and were just 100 points shy of finishing in fourth place. The little club continues to impress with each showing, regardless of how big the other teams are. If you are looking to join the Ravensong Breakers Swim team, you can contact Susan at sthomson881@ gmail.com, John at jpncampbell@mac.com or drop by the pool to check out the action.

Basketball team to play for Island title next continued from page a28

Said Gayton: “Our entire team played good, physical defense and didn’t allow Lambrick any easy baskets. I think that was the key to our success. Lambrick

hadn’t been played against physically that way all season and I think that took them by surprise.” LATE ADD: The Kondors lost to St. Michael’s in the Island final late Saturday and will go to the provincials

as the No. 6 seed (St. Michael’s earned the number one seed with the Island title.). The Kondors will play their first game of the provincials at 8:30 a.m. on March 11 in Langley against No. 11 Delview (Delta).

Young local archers bring home medals T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com

The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation needs your help to purchase Glidescope Video Laryngoscopes for the two new Operating Rooms at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Young local archers won medals in their respective categories in the 2014 Indoor Canadian National Championships. Connor Presley and Miranda Mail won silver, and Taiya McLellan and Devon Harach won bronze. The Arrowsmith Archers (a division of the Parksville/Qualicum Field & Game) also recently hosted the 21st Annual Harry Tutton Memorial 3D Archery Shoot. There were 119 shooters that came out for the event from all over Vancouver Island, as well as some coming

over from the Lower Mainland. “The Harry Tutton Shoot was another success and it’s thanks to all of our supporters,” Arrowsmith Archers member Brandy Presley said. “We owe a lot to all the businesses in the Oceanside area that support our club. Without their support the success we had would not have been possible.” The Arrowsmith Archers Club is open to youth 9 years and older, as well as adults. The club shoots indoors on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. For further information, email arrowsmitharchers@shaw.ca
