CONSUMER TIPS by Shayne Saunders
The marketplace is flooded with cheaper made products and it pays to educate yourself on how the different products are made before you buy. Not all products are created equal and shopping by colour and price, will usually prove to be a mistake in the long run. Any colour will look different under different light sources, so the same floor will look different in the livingroom than in the bedroom. Quality is more important than colour!
2
Ensure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for acclimation and installation. It is important to understand the different characteristics and limitations of the products you purchase in order to get the best value from your flooring investment. Although laminate flooring is generically referred to as ‘click together’ floors, there are hundreds of different types of locking systems and they vary greatly in quality. Our new Mountain Lock is up to 10 TIMES STRONGER than other systems.
3
You should maintain a stable environment in your home to help eliminate buckling and gapping issues with your wood floors. The humidity in your home should be in the range of 40% - 60% for laminate, engineered and hardwood flooring. Seasonal changes in humidity have a huge effect on wood based products and it is important to understand this fact before it creates a problem. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
4
Proper sub-floor preparation is the foundation of a quality installation. Most people who install flooring themselves overlook the importance of sub-floor preparation and are in a hurry to get the job done. Check for level prior to starting your installation. Once the floor is laid you cannot go back and fix the problem without removing the floor and starting all over.

Different products require different care and maintenance. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer in order to keep your warranty intact. Relying on old habits or misinformation is not an excuse if something happens to your new floor due to misuse or neglect. With proper care and maintenance your new floors will last for many years
When it comes to flooring, Laminate Warehouse has you covered! All of their products are beautifully displayed with visible price tags on each piece. Knowledgeable sales staff, professionally trained installers and guaranteed lowest prices are some of the standard policies that have helped make this locally owned company a leader in the flooring industry. Owners, Shayne Saunders and his wife YT, have built their business based on a no-nonsense approach to serving customers. Their reputation means everything to them and that shows in how they treat consumers. No games, no gimmicks – just great service and a commitment to quality workmanship. “We believe in what we sell and how we sell it” says Saunders. Laminate Warehouse offers a huge selection of flooring at guaranteed lowest prices. They also carry transitions, baseboard, casing and crown moulding. “We only carry top quality products that are backed by the best warranties in the industry and we choose our suppliers carefully to ensure the best possible value to our customers” adds Saunders. They buy direct from the factory and
due to their high volume buying power they can offer top quality merchandise at unbelievable prices. Their Whistler Premium and Whistler Heights series of laminate flooring have built a solid reputation for consistent quality. “We actually compare our own products side by side with our competitor’s product and the results are amazing. Many of the other products on the market are 10% - 20% lighter in density than the Whistler lines which makes for a huge in difference in overall quality” says Saunders. The Whistler series have even gone through a waterproofing process, whereby all four edges are protected with a waxed coating, which helps protect against moisture and accidental spills. With a Lifetime Residential Warranty against wearing, fading and staining and a 5 Year Moisture Warranty, Whistler Premium and Whistler Heights offer consumers the best overall value for their flooring investment. Both Whistler Premium and Whistler Heights feature the all new Mountain Lock technology which installs up to 3 TIMES FASTER and is over 10 TIMES
2015
STRONGER than traditional snap ‘n’ tap style locking systems that our competitor’s sell. “When we demo our new Mountain Lock system next to our competitor’s products customers are amazed at the visual difference and it makes choosing the right product easy” says Saunders.
“We believe in what we sell and how we sell it.” Shayne Saunders, Laminate Warehouse Owner
With over 150 different types of laminate flooring to choose from Laminate Warehouse is sure to have the right product to fit any budget and the right colour to satisfy even the most discerning consumer. They carry top quality factory direct products from all around the world including Canada, Germany and the USA. “How a product is made is more important than where it is made” claims Saunders. The flooring experts at Laminate Warehouse are happy to show consumers the different types of products that are available so they
can make an informed decision without any high pressure sales tactics that are commonplace in many retail stores. Not only does Laminate Warehouse carry top quality products that are easy to install for the do-it-yourself customer, they also offer professional installation by uniformed, licensed & insured installers that are covered by WCB. “The big advantage with our installation teams is consistent results. Our installers work directly for us, so satisfaction is 100% guaranteed.” says Saunders. For the people who prefer to do the job themselves, they offer sound advice and free on-site consultations. They will even lend you the tools to get the job done right. Laminate Warehouse currently has locations in Maple Ridge, Langley and Chilliwack and more expansion is in the works. With a solid reputation for treating customers right it is no surprise that they continue to grow. “We are currently looking for the right individuals to open stores in other areas and look forward to helping them build their own successful businesses” says Saunders. Visit a showroom near you, and see how premium products, expert advice and quality workmanship have helped to establish Laminate Warehouse as a leader in the flooring industry. When it comes to flooring, Laminate Warehouse has you covered.

Dutch Roots Landscaping
Sander and Jetty from Dutch Roots Landscaping will give your yard the care it needs.

CONSUMER TIPS
Looking at a colour wheel is a great way to choose garden flowers. Colours that are opposite each other, like yellow and purple, look beautiful together. If you need more mint or oregano, don’t buy more seeds, take the herbs you have and clone them. A cutting placed in water will drop roots that you can plant. Don’t fill every inch of your space with plants and flowers. By next spring, you’ll have a weeding and pruning nightmare.
Keep it natural… use vinegar to kill weeds in sidewalk cracks. Slugs love beer; they will drown themselves in it. And they do not need the whole bottle.
The name has changed, but the work ethic and excellent service remain the same Growth, in all its forms, has been the one constant in the lives of Sander Van Os and Jetty Prins. In their early years in the greenhouse center of Holland, where they and their families were involved in the horticultural industry, they became fast friends and grew up together. Their relationship grew and they became a couple; they emigrated to Ontario when the opportunity to grow their careers presented itself; they moved to British Columbia for work reasons and started growing a family; and today Sander and Jetty are growing once again as they prepare to take their relatively new company, Dutch Roots Landscaping, to the next level. Dutch Roots Landscaping is the new name for the company, which has been known as Sander Van Os Four-Seasons Landscaping to this point. Confusion with other companies having similar names in the area have lead the couple to the conclusion that a completely unique name will help them grow best in the years to come, and so they’re incorporating under the Dutch Roots Landscaping name. The name change, however, is all about marketing, and will have little impact on the quality of service Sander and Jetty have been providing clients since 2010 when they started their company. “The mission is still the same,” says Jetty.
“To maintain landscapes that preserve and protect nature.” It’s a simple yet effective philosophy, and it resonates with clients, says Sander, who also notes that people like the respect that Dutch Roots has for its customers, and for the plants. Slowly but steadily growing for the past four years, Dutch Roots Landscaping is primarily a maintenance company that specializes in strata and commercial work. However, they have many single family residential customers, as well, because they’re prepared to take on any size job. As Sander says, “We’re more than prepared to do one-time spring cleaning jobs to get the yard ready for a new year, and we’re booking lots of that kind of work right now. We also do plenty of seasonal work, fall clean ups, lawn maintenance, pruning of bushes and smaller trees, and a lot more. It really depends on what the customers needs and wants, because our biggest goal is customer satisfaction.” “What the customer wants is what we
2015
try to do,” Jetty concurs. “We have no problem when customers tell us they want us to do things a certain way because we don’t want them coming home every day and seeing that one shrub that annoys
““We’re more than prepared to do one-time spring cleaning jobs to get the yard ready for a new year. We also do plenty of seasonal work, fall clean ups, lawn maintenance, pruning of bushes and smaller trees, and a lot more.” them because the landscaper hasn’t pruned it the way the owner wants. “We’d rather they tell us so we can make them happy. It’s about respecting the customer, and it doesn’t cost extra, so why wouldn’t we do it their way? It’s also
why we respond quickly to all emails and phone calls… we want to be available to our clients when they need to talk to us and they appreciate that promptness.” It’s that kind of attitude, plus very competitive rates, quality workmanship, pride of work, and hard work, that has kept Dutch Roots Landscaping growing steadily, and they’re primed to expand again. For that reason they’re currently looking to expand their staff with people who have the same work ethic and values. “If someone out there likes getting a little dirty, doesn’t mind hard work, and wants to work for a company that respects them as a person and an employee, then we’d like to hear from them,” says Sander. In the meantime, Dutch Roots Landscaping will continue on the course they’ve set for themselves of growing their family and their business under a new name that speaks to traditions that were ingrained in them back in their native Holland. “Dutch people are known as ‘green thumbs’,” says Jetty. “Sander’s thumb is more green than mine, but we both believe that preserving and protecting nature for people to enjoy is very important to everyone. “We also want to thank all of those customers who have helped us grow to this point. It’s their loyalty and referrals that have given us the chance to expand our business, and we truly appreciate that.”

CONSUMER TIPS by Brandon Zimmerman

Know your car’s maintenance schedule and be vigilant with service. If using snow tires make sure they are removed as soon as winter is over. The rubber compound in snow tires is much softer than all season tires, and will wear out quickly in warm weather.
3 4
Take care of your tires, keeping them properly inflated for safe driving and better gas mileage Don’t ignore your dashboard warning lights. A signal can mean any number of system failures, from a fuel vapor leak caused by a loose gas cap to a blinking check engine light could indicate a severe missfire that could damage your car’s engine.

Flush your cooling system at least every two years to avoid rust and sediment, which can be very costly and harm your engine.

Relationships Matter - Wearing dentures for more than five years without having them checked could be harmful to your health. Team work - We work with other health care professionals to make sure you have the best end result. Treatment Planning - The day you are fitted for your new denture(s) isn’t the last you’ll see of us. Credentials - Always check credentials when working with a denturist. At Precision Dental Clinic, Jiwan Bhogal is a graduate from the VCC Denturist Program and was an active member of the Denturist Association Executive Committee in 2007.
Precision Denture Clinic
Precision Denture Clinic helps patients take big bite out of life While it’s a basic human function many take for granted, confident biting and chewing are luxuries to a big part of the population. Even with complete or partial dentures to replace missing teeth, many wearers suffer from improper or ill-fitting dentures that result in soreness and inflammation of the gums. There’s also the fear of embarrassing slippage, which can take a hit on one’s self esteem. Fortunately, advancements in denture technology are giving men and women of all ages a new lease on life. With the right fit and proper measurements using the correct instrumentation and an experienced denturist at the helm, there’s no reason one should suffer with poor functioning dentures anymore, says Jiwan Bhogal, owner of Precision Denture Clinic, 101- 22325 McIntosh Ave. in Maple Ridge, and VITA Denture Clinic in Surrey. The registered denturist has helped countless patients to take a big bite out of life with the help of correctly fabricated dentures on implants. “A well-fitted and functional pair of dentures is invaluable,” he said. “It allows you one of the biggest enjoyments of life – food. It will also affect your overall health and wellbeing if you have restrictions on the foods you can consume. “ In addition to being a big pain in the mouth, poorly made dentures can lead
to a whole host of problems – if ignored, you could end up with complications down the road, he adds. “You can end up with bite problems, speech impediments and tissue irritations. It can also cause damage to the ridge and TMJ joint, which can be irreversible. Leaving these conditions un-checked can lead to complicated situations when trying to fit a denture in the future. “ Originally established in 1976 as Rod Hughes Dental Mechanics, Precision Denture Clinic offers the latest advancements in oral health solutions, including dentures (full and partial), dentures on implants and immediate dentures – there’s also a strong emphasis on working together with each patient along with other health care professionals to get the best results possible. Bhogal, who took over the business in 2007, works closely with each patient to come up with a treatment plan that best fits their needs and financial ability. “We always strive to achieve the optimum results so we can improve their confidence and quality of life,” he said, noting many learn about the clinic by word of mouth – quite literally. “We continue to build relationships with other dental offices in the community to ensure that each patient’s exact needs are fulfilled. Most of our patients were
2015
referred to us by their family or friends who were also patients as well as health care professionals.” Bhogal, who graduated from the VCC Denturist program back in 2002, is an examiner in the clinical license exam and was an active member of the Denturist Association Executive Committee in 2007, admits he couldn’t imagine himself in another line of work. For the Maple Ridge resident, it’s more than just a job, it’s his passion. “I really wanted to be involved in a profession where I could help people and ensure them a better quality of life,” he said. “I most enjoy working with people, and because my demographic is in the older age bracket, I get to hear some amazing stories about long lives lived from my patients. I also get patients from all different backgrounds and ethnicities and get to see all the differences and compare similarities in cultures. “ And of course with any job in the health care realm, comes its set of challenges – denturism is no exception. “The biggest challenge is explaining to patients who have neglected their oral health in earlier years that they will now face extra challenges when fabricating a new denture,” he said. Dentures are an investment that require care and attention. An annual examination by your denturist will ensure peace of mind. “It is very important for denture wearers to receive an annual examination as
changes in your medical and dental health can affect your proposed treatment plan along with the fit and function of your dentures,” explained Bhogal. “An annual exam can detect oral abnormalities or changes in your tissue or bone. We can assess your dentures for stability, structural integrity and function.” For Gehrig Merritt, a functional pair of well-fitted dentures has changed his life. The 64-year-old Maple Ridge School District employee has worn dentures – both full uppers and partial lowers – since the age of 19. “I had eight sets of upper dentures leading up to 2010,” said Merritt, who at that time went to visit Bhogal at the Precision Denture Clinic for the first time. “It is now five years later and I am now being fitted for another set... I can honestly say that the set they made for me back in 2010 are the best set I’ve ever had where fit and wear are concerned there is not even a close second!” Now that Merritt is feeling comfortable in his dentures made by Precision Denture Clinic, he doesn’t plan on going anywhere else anytime soon. “I will continue to get my dentures made by Jiwan Bhogal –a denturist who does quality work and makes sure that every step in the process is done with precision.” For more information about Precision Denture Clinic, visit www.precisiondenture.ca or call 604-467-5655.

CONSUMER TIPS
Having a Financial Planner helps clients understand why it is important to look at the holistic picture, not just one area Having a Financial Planner helps clients stay focused on their overall goals and objectives and not market conditions Having a Financial Planner lets clients know that someone is there to help, guide and educate
Having a Financial Planner gets clients to review their goals and objectives frequently, and measures their progress Having a Financial Planner gives clients peace of mind, knowing that they are taken care of and there are no financial gaps.
Financial Planner Kathy Blom offers peace of mind. Peace of mind. It’s an elusive intangible, but it’s something most people strive for in their life, especially when it comes to their financial situation. It’s a concept Certified Financial Planner Kathy Blom understands very well. After 35 years in the financial services sector Kathy knows peace of mind is the primary motivator for the majority of her clients. Yes, they want to increase their wealth; yes, they want to ensure they’re
“What a lot of people do is nothing because it seems so overwhelming, but the reality is, doing nothing is not an option. Take small steps if that’s what it takes, but take that first step and you’ll never look back.“ ready for retirement; and yes, they want to make certain their estate is in good order in preparation for the inevitable. At the root of it all, however, is the desire to ensure financial pressures are
minimized because they have more important things to occupy their minds and their time. In order to get her clients the peace of mind they desire, Kathy uses her passion for helping people to achieve their goals in combination with her extensive knowledge of the financial services industry. She came up through the financial services sector (20 years with CIBC and 15 years in the credit union system), and has done pretty much everything involved since starting as a teller. She became an Investment Funds Advisor in 1998, and progressed to become a Certified Financial Planner in 2008. Along the way Kathy discovered that helping clients achieve their financial and life goals wasn’t so much a job as a passion, and it was that passion that convinced her to take the next logical – and final – step in her career progression, that of becoming an independent financial planning advisor. She made the move last spring when she set up offices in Maple Ridge and Chilliwack under the Manulife Securities umbrella.
2015
“It was the right step for sure,” she notes. “The change in lifestyle helped create more balance in my life, and gave me more flexibility in my schedule. “That’s meant more time for my clients, which means I feel I’m giving them even better service than I used to. I have more time to think about their needs outside of the corporate framework, and that’s a great gift to be able to give them.”
The extra time allows Kathy to focus on the holistic approach she uses towards financial planning. As she says, it’s not enough to focus on the money because life is about so much more. “I start by listening very closely to what people have to say about their life and their goals. By nature I’m very nurturing, so I absorb their story before I ever give advice because it’s important to see the big picture before you can create a plan. “When I was at CIBC, they had a saying: ‘If you have a goal, you have to have a plan,’ and it’s true. If you have goals they’ll only happen if you plan for them, so I start by listening.” After she’s confident in her client’s motivators, Kathy gets to work putting together all the components that will help them achieve their stated goals. Whatever it includes – be it insurance, investments, tax planning, retirement planning, business planning, succession
planning, long-term care, will and estate planning, or anything else – Kathy uses her knowledge and contacts to find the right services and products to ensure the goals can be achieved. “There’s a lot of financial pressure on Canadians at all stages of their life, but especially as they get older, and they need good, solid advice and information because there’s so much fear-mongering in the media, and so little good information provided by the government or the education system. “There are all kinds of ways for Canadians to maximize their financial picture, but they aren’t taught these things, and too often they don’t know where to look for the information they require. It’s my job to give them that knowledge so they can make informed choices.” Kathy is adamant when she says financial planning – or more to the point, life planning – isn’t as scary or complicated as some make it out to be. “What a lot of people do is nothing because it seems so overwhelming, but the reality is, doing nothing is not an option. Take small steps if that’s what it takes, but take that first step and you’ll never look back. “You will get the financial peace of mind you desire, which will give you the opportunity to do the things you really want to do in life.”

TIPS FOR BUYING A HEATING OR COOLING SYSTEM

Choose the right contractor, someone with a proven record of service and reliability. Consider how long they’ve been in business, and make sure you choose a reliable company that can be there down the road.

Make sure your contractor carries all the parts for your heating or cooling solution. This will shorten delays if you need something replaced. Make sure your contractor can answer calls and be there for your warranty issues.

Ensure that your contractor has licensed and bonded service technicians and quality installers. Big Valley Heating and Sheet Metal has been servicing the Fraser Valley for the past 29 years.
Pick a contractor with a wide selection of heating or cooling products so they can give you the one that’s right for your home.
Not only heating at Big Valley Heating and Sheet Metal Big Valley Heating And Sheet Metal Ltd.’s Ron McMyn has seen dramatic changes in his company over the last few decades, as it’s risen from a small operation to a large-scale business. “I’ve owned the company since 1986,” McMyn said. “We’ve gone from two guys to over 30 guys.” McMyn said the key to the business’ success has been an emphasis on serving customers’ needs. “It’s good customer service and good quality work,” he said. “It’s mostly just treating the customer fairly.”
“We do everything possible for the customer, if you’re not happy we take care of it” Ron McMyn, Big Valley Heating and Sheet Metal co-owner Big Valley has built its reputation by standing behind its products and quickly responding to customers’ concerns .
“It’s always being available, always being reachable,” he said. “If they have an issue, they come in, the service guys are there right away.” While heating buildings is still a key component of the business, Big Valley also offers a wide selection of fireplaces, outdoor heating solutions and more. “We don’t do just heat any more,” McMyn said. “We do fireplaces, backyard patio heaters, outdoor heaters and barbecues.” He said those patio and outdoor heaters have risen in popularity lately, as they provide a nice way to have an enjoyable winter experience outside without going anywhere. “People are staying around their homes more,” McMyn said. McMyn said cooling products and air filtration products are also becoming more important parts of the business. Big Valley offers customized solutions that are perfect for those who need certain rooms kept cool, those who are bothered by allergies and others. “We do air conditioning, custom cooling, air filtration, air purification, and UV lights” he said.

Maple Ridge Chrysler pleases customers and builds community “Happy customers.” Ask Ian Speckman what makes his business successful and that’s the answer you’ll get right away. “We actually do live by the rule that the customer is right – not by convenience or by slogan,” says Speckman, the dealer primary at Maple Ridge Chrysler Jeep Dodge, at 11911 West St. “If for some reason the customer comes in here and we haven’t satisfied their needs, we haven’t done our job,” Just recently a customer returned to the dealership, saying he believed the cost of the vehicle he bought included a navigation app on the car’s computer. Though Speckman was sure one of his salespeople had properly explained that he would have to pay to download the app, Speckman wanted to make the customer happy, so the dealership paid for the download. “If we promised it, we’re going to do it. We always go by our word,” Speckman says. “If I turn the customer away today, they will never come back to us. You do what you have to do to look after your customers.” The dealership also takes this philosophy with sales. Speckman doesn’t believe in the “typical sales tactic” of sending out a salesperson after a cus-
tomer browsing the lot. Instead, Maple Ridge Chrysler welcomes customers to come into the dealership and have a conversation about what they’re looking for. “Let me see how we can save some time rather than walking over the eight acres we’re on right now. Let’s scope down what’s important to you, to see if I have something that works for you,” Speckman says. “I will find a car that will actually fit you, and satisfy your financial needs.” Maple Ridge Chrysler sells a range of new Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram vehicles, as well as a wide variety of used models. The service centre has 18 bays to offer regular services and seasonal tune-ups. Speckman adds that almost a third of his customers have financial difficulties and poor credit ratings. But, he says, the dealership is understanding and works with customers to figure out a plan for them. “These are not bad people,” he says. “These are people who may have had some sickness and couldn’t work; they may have lost their jobs. There are
2015
lots of reasons why people have some financial difficulties. But it does make it sometimes a little more challenging to find the right car because the rates can be quite severe. So we like to spend the time with you to find out what’s best to get you pre-approved for the best terms.” Maple Ridge Chrysler also has a feature on its website where people can anonymously message back and forth with a representative from the dealership. Speckman says this has been beneficial for customers. “Sometimes it’s unnerving coming into the car lot,” he said. “Whenever you’re spending $10-20,000, it’s extremely stressful, so we try to make it as easy to get as much information beforehand.” Maple Ridge Chrysler can prove its track record of great customer service. According to dealership rating site dealerrater.ca, it is B.C.’s No. 1 Chrysler and Dodge dealer of the year, with a rating of 4.8 out of five. The reviews on the site praise the dealership’s service and customers’ experiences with staff. Supporting the local community is also very important to the dealership. Most of its 140 or so employees live in the Maple Ridge and Mission area. Maple Ridge Chrysler is the financial sponsor of the Albion Football Club and
an ice-rink in Pitt Meadows, and also donates to the Children’s Wish Foundation and KidSport – a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to underprivileged children, to cover the costs of sport equipment and registration fees. “We’re a community company with community in mind,” says Speckman, who adds that he has lived in Maple Ridge since he was three years old. Over the recent Christmas holidays, the dealership ran a campaign in which people could nominate a family in need of a helping hand – and the chosen family would receive a brand new Caravan. Though it was difficult to choose, Speckman said the dealership decided to give the car to a young Mission couple with five children. Two of them have ongoing health issues. “She was going back and forth to Vancouver General Hospital two or three times a week, and she was driving in an old beat-up Caravan that wasn’t very reliable,” Speckman said. “It’s important that we work in this community, we live in this community, and we give back to this community.”

Repair stone chips ASAP: Better repair, Prevents cracking. Safety: Ask what is safe drive away time for your vehicle. Proper products: Vehicles require specific adhesives. Ask what is the proper one for your vehicle.
Government Certified Technicians: Confirm it will be a certified tech working on your car. Go for the best. Go for Broco.
Broco Glass, quality above all else. Ask any business owner if they stand behind their product and you’ll get the standard sales pitch. But for a business to truly succeed, the quality they speak about has to come through, not just in the product they sell, but in the quality of the service they provide and the guarantee they offer. For Vance Whitley, franchise owner of Broco Glass in Maple Ridge, a lifetime of experience in the automotive industry means, above all else, quality comes first. That wealth of knowledge dates back to when Whitley was a teenager, working for his father in Alberta, who owned an automotive glass repair shop. He spent the next 20 years working in the industry.
“We are located in more than 35 countries, so if there are new innovations or when the technology changes, we make sure we’re on top of it. It’s such an advantage to able to draw on those resources.”
When the opportunity came up to have his own shop in Maple Ridge, Whitley knew it was the perfect fit for him. “I really enjoy the community here and the lifestyle,” he says. He’s an avid fly fisherman who won a silver medal at the 2014 Canadian Fly Fishing Championships in Quebec. “For a business to thrive, you have to love where you live. I’m surrounded by such natural beauty here and it offers me the chance to enjoy my passions outside of work. I love to fly fish and I’ve been able to pass that on, helping coach some of the kids here in the local area.” Whether it’s tying a fly or replacing a cracked windshield, Whitley draws on his experience to make sure every job is done right the first time. “People don’t realize the importance of having their windshield replacement done right. Standards are constantly changing in the trade, and we make sure we are always using best practices,” he explains. “When you have a wealth of knowledge, you
2015
can draw on that for any problems that may come up. At the end of the day, there’s just a ton of knowledge and experience that our company has that others just don’t.”
Many people don’t realize that the windshield is part of the structural integrity of a vehicle, and as such, it needs to be installed properly, using the best products and methods available.
Whitley says the advantage of being a franchise owner with Broco is that it allows him to call on the company’s world-wide resources, learning about the latest techniques, and being able to access new tools used in the industry.
In an accident, when an airbag deploys, it hits the steering wheel on the driver’s side, but on the passenger side, it hits the windshield.
“We are located in more than 35 countries, so if there are new innovations or when the technology changes, we make sure we’re on top of it. It’s such an advantage to able to draw on those resources.” He says another big part of the company’s success is ensuring that the work is performed by government- certified workers, using top-of-the-line products. The latest technology and materials allows turnaround in a fraction of the time required by some of their competitors, he says. At Broco, once the windshield is in place, customers can drive away in just one hour. “When you’re in 35 countries, you’ve seen it already, you already know. Within a month of a new car coming out, you already know what the challenges are going to be.”
“If that windshield hasn’t had time to set properly or you’re using an inferior product, it can peel the windshield wide open and you’ve created a safety hazard where the airbag won’t deploy properly.” He says quality of product is also important when cars rollover. If your windshield is compromised, then the roof of the car can buckle. “It’s such an important part of the car, and so many people just don’t realize that,” he says. “And every step of the installation process is critical. In my shop, we pay attention to the details from start to finish.” “Nowadays, you have to have a strong online presence to compete in business,” says Whitley. “And that’s why Broco offers the ability to book your appointment online 24/7. The days of waiting for a shop to open at 9 a.m. so you can call in, are long gone.”

FIVE REASONS TO CONSIDER LEGAL ADVICE by John Becker
1
The Wills, Estates and Succession Act came into force March 31, 2014. It makes significant changes to the law regarding wills and estates. To quote the Provincial Government press release: “People who already have a will may wish to sit down with their lawyers to ensure their wishes are upheld”.

Your legal relationships in the family business need to be properly documented. A legal fight with family is always awful, so do what you can to avoid it. Family business succession planning is a process that does not happen overnight. It can take years to put in place the proper legal, tax planning and mentorship. Start talking now. When spouses split up there are a host of legal issues that need resolving. We offer collaborative law and mediation options, along with traditional Supreme Court and Provincial Court litigation services.

In our real estate practice, we are seeing an increasing number of parents and children buying homes together. Often the parents put in cash from a downsizing, and the children agree to pay the mortgage. The mortgage company usually requires everyone sign the mortgage. A co-ownership agreement clarifies the relationship – who is paying what, what triggers a sale and how the proceeds are divided.
Change shouldn’t be something that just happens to you; careful planning is needed Change happens – but the experienced team at Becker and Co. Lawyers is here to help you prepare for it. Some may think of transition planning as something reserved for old age, or for a business that has been around for some time. But change management needs to be built into all personal plans from a young age, and in all business plans from the start. “You can plan for events or be surprised by them and scramble to just react,” says John Becker. Possible and probable scenario planning is an important part of personal and business strategic thinking. It’s something that has become important to Becker and Co., for they themselves have seen growth within their team of lawyers and staff over the past number of years. As the firm’s lawyers have become more experienced within their practice areas and vested in our communities, they’ve also been expanding their areas of expertise. “Building an environment of trust and collegiality takes time but the returns are huge. A broad team approach to planning always generates more and better options plus implementation buyin,” the firm says. “As we, as individuals, and our law firm mature and evolve we are very sensitive to the similar journeys being

The cost of institutional care for seniors, particularly privatized care, can be very high. “Folks in their forties and fifties will have physical care and financial care responsibilities for parents, while at the same time they have late teenagers or early 20-somethings who are still at home or pursuing post-secondary education at their cost,” the firm says. “That double-whammy can put a significant financial burden on a family, in addition to the personal stress of having to manage those two ends of the demographic spectrum.” Another area that Becker and Co. provides support with is marriage agreements. The firm recommends having a plan in place so that there’s a clear understanding on how a separation (and how it will affect asset and children) will be managed. “It’s one of those transition scenarios that needs to be taken into account. A marriage agreement is a lot like fire insurance, you’re not going to be able to get fire insurance when your house is on fire,” the firm says. For business clients, Becker and Co. works with new entrepreneurs to put transition and succession plans in place from the start, and builds structures into their business plans that allow for maximum flexibility and the minimizing of future tax liabilities.
“We look at things like real estate holding structures separate from the active business operation,” the firm said. The firm also assists clients with their governance structures – such as putting plans in place for senior employees to share in the decision-making process – and also putting plans in place for the transition of a family business between generations. In addition, the firm has an intellectual property division that helps clients with trademarks, copyrights and patents from early on in the business cycle. “From a cost perspective it’s a lot cheaper to put these in place from the start,” the firm says. “You can save yourself many times the cost of the initial planning over your lifetime, by using accepted business structures that will reduce liability and increase tax savings.” Having been around for 35 years, the firm has also developed close working relationships with professional advisors in the region relevant to transition planning – accountants, financial planners, bank and credit union representatives, and the like. “We know the resources of the community, and can implement strategies efficiently and effectively. So, for those seeking experienced legal advice in transition planning for personal and business affairs, the team at Becker and Co. Lawyers has all the necessary experience.

CONSUMER TIPS TO HEATING WITH WOOD by Lisa Blaine
Season your wood. If you buy your wood, buy it in the spring that allows it to dry in time for the fall season. Stack your firewood loosely when seasoning it. Have an airtight unit installed. Trying to heat with an open fireplace is almost impossible. Check the seal on your airtight heater – you should be able to put a piece of paper in the door and not be able to pull it out. If it slips out, you probably need a new door gasket. Make sure your chimney is cleaned by a professional, WETT certified chimney sweep every year.
Warm Hearth turns a house into a home with gas and wood-burning heating units When Rick Springer and his wife bought their first woodburning stove decades ago, the owner of Maple Ridge’s Warm Hearth Heating Centre found out something quite interesting about his new bride. “My wife discovered she was a closet pyromaniac,” he says with a chuckle. “Pretty well every night, we will burn a fire. She just loves to have the fire going.” But Warm Hearth, located at 11834 – 226th Street, isn’t only in the business of selling wood-burning stoves, designed to warm living spaces. It also carries gas and pellet-burning units for those looking to warm their rooms with energy-efficient and stylish heaters. Springer says the benefits of such heaters go beyond just keeping warm. “Because we live in a very humid, moist climate, having the dryness of that wood really goes a long ways towards keeping your house kind of dry and mold-free. Doors that tend to jam in the winter are now swinging free,” he says. “It’s just an ideal kind of heat for down in this area.” But Springer acknowledges it takes a real commitment from those who are serious about enjoying cheap, energy-efficient heating. “Wood is my personal preference, but it is a lifestyle. So a person has to be
aware of that,” he says. “You have to get the wood and split the wood, stack the wood and clean up after the wood.”
“Once you turn a fireplace on, especially a nice one, and you’re in a living room, it just adds so much to the comfort.” Rick Springer, Warm Hearth Heating Centre But he insists that no matter how much time and money a person invests in it, it will pay for itself, “because there’s no cheaper way to heat than wood.” Still, Springer says the wood-burning units are not for everybody. “If you’re a person who has a busy life
2015
and you just don’t think this is something for you, then probably gas is the better way to go,” he says. “As my wife calls it, ‘clap-on, clap-off convenience.’” Furthermore, the polar vortex that left much of the continent paralyzed by freezing weather last year drew new customers to Warm Hearth. “They’ve already been thinking about buying them for appearances and for decor of the house, but they’re also looking at what’s been happened on the East Coast,” Springer says. “They’re starting to look at these things as being part of an emergency plan ... asking, ‘How are you going to survive eight days without power?’” And if there’s one tip he has for customers on the fence about buying a unit, Springer advises to go with quality. It’s an easy task to fulfill at Warm Hearth since many of its products are made in B.C., which is considered the base for manufacturing high-quality units. Whenever Springer travels to the United States, he notices local brands like Regency and Pacific Energy are put on full display, just as they are up north. “It’s not just ‘rah-rah, B.C.,’” he says, adding those companies’ proven track records speak for themselves. “It’s also the fact that when we do have any issues, most of these companies we can phone and we can talk to the
Air-tight fireplaces provide efficient heat.
actual designers directly.” But one of the most important beliefs Springer holds is the ability for these heating units to transform a family’s lifestyle. “A burning fireplace – gas or wood and, to a lesser extent, pellet-burning – they are kind of like pictures or plants, in that they can really turn a house into a home.”

CONSUMER TIPS Craig Jones Owner
Used firearms can be a great buy. Most of the time there is lots of life left in a well taken care of firearm.. Clean your new purchase as per the owner’s manual to ensure proper functioning and safe use. Take advantage of the staff’s expertise behind the counter.
Make sure you have all the equipment required to maintain your firearm. Cleaning supplies, gun oils, cases, etc. are a small up-front purchase that will allow you to maintain your gun’s value and proper performance Always be mindful and vigilant in keeping up-to-date with Canadian firearm politics and legislation.
Wanstalls, a pro shop for firearms Wanstalls is more than just a place to buy guns. “We want to be a resource centre, not just a firearm store,” said co-owner Craig Jones. “We can help people learn not only about firearms, but also about where they can go shooting, where they can go for training and even where they can go hunting.” Wanstalls is a pro shop, not a big box store. Wanstalls, at 22338 Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge, deals with everyone from the brand new gun owner to the firearm aficionado who is looking for a specific model of gun that isn’t being made anymore. Luckily, the staff has decades of experience in hunting and sport shooting. Wanstalls is also affiliated with West Coast Instruction, which offers firearm training and courses for hunters. “Some of us are more tactically oriented and some of us are more geared toward hunting, so together we can answer most questions that people may have.” Jones himself is an avid hunter and sport shooter. “I’ve always been interested in
firearms. My school projects when I was a child were on guns and gunpowder and projectiles.” Knowledge is power when buying a firearm, Jones added, and a good first step is to come down to the store to speak with the knowledgable staff. “If someone is just starting to think about getting into hunting and spending time outdoors, they should come into the gun store and we have a set list of questions we ask and from that we can get a feel for what the person is looking for and present some options,” said Jones. “We have hundreds and hundreds of different types of firearms and we can help someone find exactly what it is they are looking for.” And with the information available to people on the internet, gun buyers are more educated than ever. And Wanstalls Online is a great resource for firearm enthusiasts. The comprehensive store features new models throughout the year and has a wide range of hunting and shooting supplies. For just over a year, Wanstalls has been offering financing for three,
2015
six and 12 month terms on firearms purchases, with rates starting at 4.9 per cent. In the beginning, the demand for firearms purchased through financing was high, Jones said.
“We have hundreds and hundreds of different types of firearms and we can help someone find exactly what it is they are looking for.” “People now seem to accept it as a viable way of buying a firearm,” he said. “The types of firearms that people are financing are the more difficult ones to find, some of which we only have every two or three years.” Lately, Jones has noticed a trend that sees more women purchasing firearms and an increase in young gun buyers, both sexes.
“I think firearms back 20 years ago had a stigma to them, when there was a ‘guns are bad’ attitude in society. That stigma is pretty much gone now and we have firearms that appeal to all ages and abilities,” he said. “Women don’t feel constrained by the social norms of 20 years ago, either.” Another trend Jones has noticed is there has also been a significant increase in people buying tactical firearms, as opposed to the more traditional models. Whatever the need, whether it be for hunting or sport shooting, Wanstalls in Maple Ridge is the best place to start your foray into the world of firearms. • For more information on Wanstalls, check out their website www.wanstallsonline.com or call them at 604-467-9232.

Keep in mind the budget requirements of your project. Do not leave your lighting plans to what is “left over” or you will find your space is under lit and under whelmed! Planning is everything; meet with your interior designer and lighting consultant and confer with the contractor and electrician. This will allow time to make important decisions regarding lighting layout ideas for every room before wiring starts. The team approach produces a cohesive result; get all the players involved from the beginning.
3
If possible do your furniture layout before attempting to create a lighting system. The lighting should relate to the way each room is going to be used. Light layering is our special design methodology, taking into account room function, house style and accents like paintings that need to be featured. Keep in mind there should be at least three layers or styles of light in each room, blended together to create a successful design. No single light fixture can perform all lighting needs in a room
4
Use dimmers wherever possible for optimum results whether you need full light for tasking or less light for a more ambient feel. Understand the benefits, limitations and function of recessed lighting. There are multiple sizes and styles to choose from which should be clearly understood and shown to you by your lighting professional.

Take the time to see what bulbs work the best in your spaces. In today’s world there is so much choice, it isn’t just about watts or efficiency. You need to find the bulbs that will work with the color of your room and the light level/intensity you are looking for. The bottom line, wrong bulbs look wrong!
Lighting and home decor store switches ownership In addition to being a hub to solve all one’s lighting needs, it’s also home to a wide range of home decor, accessories, mirrors and much more. And while it may be a familiar landmark in the area, what many don’t realize is that there’s a new local owner at the helm of this ‘booming little business with a big heart.’ “Maple Ridge Lighting was started by a family here in Maple Ridge and it continues to stay in the hands of a family from Maple Ridge,” says Patti Wilson, who took over ownership along with her brother last April. “I’ve heard rumours that some people thought a corporate conglomerate had come in and bought it. However, I want to reassure the community that the store has been purchased by a local who wants to stay involved in the community.” Wilson is no stranger to community involvement – and it’s not just because she’s a proud local who was born and raised here in Maple Ridge. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, Wilson worked in the marketing department for The Vancouver Sun and The Province for 23 years. “I guess you could say I was the face of the newspaper when it came to community events, sponsorship deals, community relations, etc.” she says.
“The mix of people skills and sales is what I’m good at.”
“One of the things that make us unique is all the decor and accent pieces. We spend hundreds of hours Ƥnding unique gift ideas and home accessories.” Patti Wilson
Wilson also spent a few months working at Maple Ridge Lighting – an experience that reaffirmed her decision to change career paths.
2015
“I had talked about purchasing the business for a number of years – the timing just worked out right,” she says. With the business already a household name in the community, Wilson doesn’t plan on changing Hilda and Peter Hill’s original recipe for retail success. However, she is excited to utilize her background to help the business grow even more. “I do plan to keep the same great ideas that have made Maple Ridge Lighting last for 29 years in the community,” she says. “Peter and Hilda have made some strong decisions over the years – they also hired really good, trusted people who provide great service and knowledge in the industry.” In addition to the top-notch service that Maple Ridge Lighting’s customers have come to know and love over the years, Wilson says it’s the store’s selection, pricing and diversity that give it a competitive edge. “Maple Ridge Lighting is not just a lighting store; we’re really so much more.” With a massive assortment of fixtures and light bulbs, one is sure to find something to suit their style, budget and home. There’s also a variety of home decor pieces and accessories – a fine way to beautify one’s home, according to Wilson.
“One of the things that make us unique is all the decor and accent pieces. We spend hundreds of hours finding unique gift ideas and home accessories to complement one’s home.” Wilson is excited to update the look of the store with a fresh facelift, which means customers can expect to see some renovations take place over the next year. “You’ll see some exciting changes to the interior and exterior – we’re really looking forward to that.” Along with Peter and Hilda, who entrusted their ‘baby’ into new hands, Wilson would like to thank all of the contractors, electricians, local business owners and all the many customers who have supported the store over the last year. “Your support means the world to us – we really can’t thank you enough.” And with all of the new developments popping up and young families moving to Maple Ridge, Wilson anticipates more growth in the near future. “There’s so much happening here and the landscape is changing, which is why we want these new families to know we’re here and that we offer so much more than fantastic lighting fixtures. We’re a unique store and prove that you really can find some great shopping here in Maple Ridge.”

Westgate Flower Garden Loves to Share the Joy of Flowers This year at Westgate Flower Garden, our goal is to reach out beyond our now established store and into the community, sharing what we love. We are thrilled to present our monthly themed children’s workshops and to offer our services to facilitate birthday parties and special events on-site. Among our staff we have young, dynamic designers who share the vision of reviving what is too often seen as an aging industry; and we are looking to involve more children and youth in the fun, creative, and therapeutic art of floral design. One discussion shared widely as of late amongst other industry professionals is the topic of how to move forward within the field of floristry. This is certainly not met without many challenges, and requires much deliberation. What is often seen as an aging art form, or dare I say ‘hobby,’ is, in actuality, something so inherent to us as human beings… it connects us with the beauty and refined art that the natural world provides. It speaks volumes, transcending any lines of our social, political or cultural world. It teaches us to observe, to nurture, to
follow intuition and to express. It shows us that life is what you make it, and you make it every day. Opening our doors to officially hold monthly children’s workshops (adults are welcome too) and having people open their doors to us for special events is just the beginning of reigniting the community with an appreciation for the joy that flowers can bring. We do this as much with our wedding and special occasion events as we do with our celebration-of-life and memorial services. It is an honour we reflect on during those late nights of long work, wanting to perfect and realize the reflection of a person. We are entrusted with a great responsibility to be sensitive initiators, responsive advocates, and to make each transaction personal, all while upholding the industry standard of quality and redefining its artistry. At Westgate Flower Garden, nothing is more central to our operations than connecting with the customer, and we like nothing better than to share that
2015
‘aha’ moment. For every extremely genuine, excited, appreciative customer we have another who came in only with the knowledge that they wanted to leave with something beautiful. These customers whose candid inquiries, quirky colour choices and unfiltered commentary are often the people who inspire us — or push our boundaries — the most, and the result is something brand new and totally organic. From an owner’s perspective, I look back on the journey of Westgate Flower Garden with a thankful and humble heart. The years have shown me, through all aspects of my business, who I am and where I am meant to be in this world. Perhaps the most important and ever-changing experience is the delicate balance of the people and personalities we encounter. Being able to interact with others on the personal level we do is truly amazing, and having the right team mem-
bers is vital to our success. I am fortunate to have a team that not only works well together, but thrives off one another’s creativity and ideas. May year 15 continue to bring to us all the vibrancy, sense of connectivity, and inspiration that feeds our souls and drives us forward. Sandra

Great selection and service at Home Hardware “I can’t believe you always have everything I need.” That’s something Haney Home Hardware owner Scott O’Dell hears almost daily. It’s due to the fact that O’Dell’s store on 223rd Street in downtown Haney is able to tap into the combined buying power of the close to 1,100 Canadian-owned and operated Home Hardware stores across the country. While larger box stores have to buy a large number of any one item to maximize profits, O’Dell has more flexibility. If he only sells 10 of a certain item in a year, he only has to purchase that many and can replace as necessary to always keep them on the shelf. This benefits his store and his customers. “I can have a greater selection of more items… and still give you a good value,” O’Dell said. “We’re a one-stop shop. I carry everything from toasters to barbecues to nuts and bolts to camp stoves to motor oil to toilet paper.” Yes, visit Home Hardware and you’ll see the selection in store is astounding, and if they don’t have a certain item on the shelf at the moment, they’ll get it for you. “We have a reputation of being able to get just about anything you want,” says O’Dell. “Whether it’s a nut and bolt or a little widget, we’ll hunt it down and find it for you.” They value providing individual service to their customers, who they consider part of the Home
Hardware family. Building lasting relationships with their customers is the Home Hardware way. Take, for example, a woman who just recently decided to purchase a patio heater, but didn’t know how she was going to get it home. O’Dell told her he would drop it off at her house on his way home that evening, and he would assemble it – all for no charge. Naturally, she was delighted, but this kind of personalized service is just part of the buying experience at Home Hardware. Free delivery and assembly is something O’Dell has been doing throughout the 21 years he’s run the store and it’s something customers have come to know and appreciate about his store and staff. It doesn’t stop there, either. If repairs need to be done, Haney Home Hardware will gladly do those as well, as all their products are backed by a warranty. “I’m going to assemble it for you,” O’Dell will tell a customer who is considering buying a lawnmower. “I’m going to gas and oil it up. I’m going to deliver it to your door. If you have any warranty problems with it, I’m going to fix it for you, and I’m going to drop it back at your house for no extra
2015
charge.” It’s because of this kind of service that Haney Home Hardware has been able to forge strong relationships with customers. It’s the kind of place where staff and customers know each other on a first-name basis and everyone is friendly. “There are days when I honestly know every other customer who walks in the store. It’s a little bit ‘Cheers’-like around here,” he laughs, adding that some customers come to the store “just to shoot the breeze.” For the owners and staff at Haney Home Hardware, being part of the community is important. O’Dell, for instance, has lived in Maple Ridge most of his life, and is active in the community. He has volunteered as a soccer coach, and currently coaches the seniors boys’ basketball team at Maple Ridge Christian School. He has coached, encouraged and built up a strong team of senior basketball players, and just recently returned from Vancouver Island where the team placed first. Kids don’t just look up to O’Dell, they respect his knowledge and passion for the sport. It’s the same kind of enthusiasm he brings to work each day. “We fit the community and care about the community,” O’Dell says. Caring about community has been integral to the Home Hardware brand ever since the cooperative was first
formed in St. Jacobs, Ontario in 1964. The organization has never forgotten its small-town community roots and – at a time when many businesses with Canadian origins have come under U.S. ownership – Home Hardware has remained 100 per cent Canadian dealer-owned and operated, something the local owner is very proud of. “It’s a multi-million dollar company, and yet it has a ma-and-pa feel about it. There’s something very Canadian about the feel – even at the head-office level,” O’Dell says. Such accessibility and rapport runs all the way down from the head office in Ontario to the dealer and customer. It’s goodwill and trust that has built Home Hardware’s hard-won reputation. Several times a year, O’Dell says he’ll have a situation where a customer will call and say his lawn tractor needs servicing, and give directions to his backyard, telling O’Dell that the key is under the seat of the tractor. He’ll go pick up the tractor, and once repaired, return it to the customer’s backyard and leave a note asking him to pay at the store. “He’s trusting me to go to his backyard and into his shed or garage, but I’m trusting him that he’s going to come in and pay the bill,” O’Dell says. It’s that level of trust that gives him great satisfaction, and is something he’s proud of. “Whether it’s with my employees or with my customers, you build a reputation and customer loyalty on trust.”

CONSUMER TIPS
Make sure you do your research; it is a major decision, take your time. What is provided and does it apply to you and your needs. Identify the philosophy and vision of the facility.
Make sure your loved ones are ready to make the move. NGo with your instincts; you will know if it feels right.
Pat and Celeste Deluca
The Wesbrooke Seniors Living Community: Our home is your home Pat and Celeste De Luca are the owners and operators of The Wesbrooke Seniors Living Community and they have a very large extended family. “We consider our residents to be part of our family,” shares Pat. “This is not a place where seniors are forgotten. They are important to us and we empower them to thrive.”
“Our idea of independent living at The Wesbrooke isn’t about changing your lifestyle. It’s about helping you continue it with an abundance of new opportunities. I would love to have my mom and dad living here.” The Wesbrooke Seniors Living Community and Pitt Meadows Seniors Centre are fully accessible and age-friendly developments located at 12000 - 190A Street in Pitt Meadows. Pat points out how well the facility is blending in with the surrounding community.
“Our four-storey residential complex complements the adjacent Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre, new library, and forms an integral part of the civic centre. There are plenty of things for our residents and families or guests to do within walking distance. Our new senior’s facility provides a much needed room for growth in the breadth of activities available to seniors in Pitt Meadows.” The Pitt Meadows Seniors Association was instrumental in the design of the new 9,500-sq.-ft. centre, which forms part of The Wesbrooke. It is managed by area seniors through a not-for-profit organization contracting with parks and leisure services. It is maintained by the owner of The Wesbrooke. The centre offers space for organized social activities, a large hall with a stage, arts and crafts room, lounge, billiards room and administration offices. The centre provides an area for Pitt Meadows seniors to meet and enjoy programs and social events, which are available to them and also to the public. “We don’t expect our residents to move in and not be involved. We give them a purpose, energize them and allow them to do what they want to do. We have daily activities available, but our residents can choose to participate or find their own activities,” Pat said. “Our philosophy of assisted living is based upon resident choice, dignity, privacy, individuality and independence. Our rooms
2015
are like regular apartments and that allows the residents to maintain the level of independence they choose,” he added. “In addition, we provide services like a hotel. We provide security in the facility, and that is important to a vulnerable population. We provide housekeeping and we have a Red Seal chef who prepares an excellent menu to meet the many varied dietary requirements of our people. We also have a full-time nurse and licensed care aides on site 24 hours.” The staff are a key part to The Wesbrooke. “Our staff are hand-picked. We make sure that our staff have the same caring philosophy as we have and they put the needs of the residents first. The Wesbrooke is not part of a big, faceless corporation. We, the owners, are onsite and if something needs to be repaired or renovated we don’t have to seek approval from a corporate head office we make sure it gets done.” The Wesbrooke ‘Closer to Home’ model offers services tailored to meet the individual needs of the residents. It takes a personalized approach, expanding services when needed, to meet requirements of each resident in the privacy of their own suite. Its assisted living service plans are developed by the health services director, the residents and their families. Together they coordinate a range of services to support the resident’s independence, self-direction, and participation in decisions. “We encourage the families of our residents to be involved and come and go as they please. We have events all year round, summer barbecues, Christmas concerts, a variety club and seasonal celebrations. Being home to the seniors centre also
provides plenty to do.” The residents also have an opportunity to give back to the community, Pat explains. “We have knitting groups that knit toques,
Pat and Celeste Deluca with a resident of The Wesbrooke
scarves and mittens and donate them to the less fortunate in the community. Last year we raised 21,000 lbs. of food for the food bank, and we raised funds for the hospice and the Alzheimer Society.” “We have some of our residents go to local day cares and read to the children and we have children from Mother Goose daycare visit here and interact with the residents. It’s a great experience for both groups.” Pat sums it up: “Our idea of independent living at The Wesbrooke isn’t about changing your lifestyle. It’s about helping you continue it with an abundance of new opportunities. I would love to have my mom and dad living here.”

Think local – a local company will often be able to offer you everything that a national company can, with greater flexibility and superior customer service.
2
Get references/referrals –the company should be able to provide you with references of customers they currently service.
3
Make sure you’re fully covered – some companies monitor for intrusion only, while others monitor for intrusion, medical, and fire emergencies
4
Understand what type of equipment is being installed – make sure you understand what equipment they are using and is it current technology.

Westridge Security
Find out what the company’s maintenance plan is in advance – the first time that your system requires maintenance is not the time to find out the policy.
Westridge Security: Keeping an eye on the community The days of leaving your family home unlocked while you run downtown are long gone. Fortunately, John Griffiths and Westridge Security can protect your home or business when you’re not there. John started his security career in 2003 in Maple Ridge. “I was working for another security firm, but only as a static guard. It was not performing as it should, so I was hired from that company to work in-house for another. I later started my own security company. As the years went by, we grew very quickly and began providing mobile patrols to commercial and residential clients. We are now the one-stop shop for security.” Westridge Security is constantly upgrading its technology, keeping pace by supplying the most up to date alarm systems and cameras available. “The cameras we are installing now are HD, three mega pixels, in most cases a higher definition than you have on your home television.” John explains the importance of capturing a clear image. “The older cameras provided the police with a grey, grainy image that made it difficult to use as an identification tool. Recently, one of our clients had a breakin at night. Even in the dark, we provided the police a sharp, clear image that resulted in the apprehension of the
burglars.” “We recently hired a ful-ltime service technician with 25 years’ experience in the security business. This gives us the ability to design and service our systems in-house, which is also a cost savings for our clients.” Having experience in the field, John had noted that some of the contracts and monitoring agreements people had in place were less than customer friendly. “When customers sign up with us, they pay $19.95 a month. We don’t ask them to sign a long-term contract. For that, we install and monitor the equipment with a lifetime warranty and respond when alerted,” he said. “We have over 30 staff and we hire local people. Our people are customer-oriented, friendly and compassionate. We know we are dealing with people’s homes and lives and we take that seriously,” he added. “Our people know the area, which decreases response time. They know what is happening in the community. By monitoring locally there is no long delay in dispatching.” Westridge has a close relationship with the RCMP and many of the security company’s staff are seeking law
2015
enforcement careers. “They are very knowledgeable in all areas of security and they want to ensure that this community is a safe place to live.” Westridge Security also works closely with the business community. “We work with the local BIA and monitor much of the core area. Our fees are very acceptable to someone starting up a new business. They already have a lot
“We see new clients every year and that is largely from the good reviews and testimonials we receive from our long term customers.” of start-up costs, and by not having to purchase expensive security equipment and tie into a long term contract, our service provides them with a service they otherwise may not have installed.” Westridge Security is the lead security agency in the area. It not only provides alarm installation service, but sells cameras and security equipment from its store. In addition, Westridge provides static guards, for malls or construction sites, mobile patrols and provides a Home Watch program that will drive by and
monitor your home if you are away on vacation. Recently, Westridge Security has added drone surveillance to its list of services. “We have been using the drones mostly at the request of customers who have large tracts of agricultural land or commercial building complexes,” John explains. “The drones have very high definition forward looking infrared imaging systems technology, and this allows us to make passes over the area, take a bird’s eye view and check for damage or vandalism in less time than doing it on foot and less expensive than hiring a fixed wing aircraft. We then provide the client with the video or still shots taken from the air.” Current privacy laws prevent the use of drone activity in residential areas, but Westridge has applications for search and rescue and other emergency services. “Right now we charge per flight, but we certainly see a future for drone surveillance in the commercial sector.” John sums it up by saying they are proud to be protecting their neighbours. “We are the community’s one stop for home security, we do it all and we keep our eyes on our community.”

5 The team at Royal LePage looks forward to helping you with all of your Real Estate needs
Royal LePage

CONSUMER TIPS

Obtain financing information. Your Realtor can assist if requested. Being pre-approved can enhance your offer. Research government programs. Your Realtor is can help. Understand the process of making an offer.
Ask if your Realtor has a list of home inspectors, moving companies, and all utilities needed to be notified. Closing costs above your down payment can be substantial. Property purchase tax, legal fees, and associated one time expenses can catch you by surprise.
Royal LePage navigates unpredictable real estate market for new and old buyers The local real estate market was a much different animal prior to the 2008 financial meltdown, according to realtor Bob Quinnell. “With the new economy, you never know when it’s going to get busy. I’ve seen it busy in July and absolutely dead in July,” says the manager of Maple Ridge’s Royal LePage, located
““The buyers move here for two reasons: one is price and the other is community.” at 11933 – 224th Street. “The markets are unpredictable. They’re very regional now. We used to be able to apply statistics and it would be for the whole Lower Mainland. That doesn’t work anymore ... you really have to be an expert in the market you’re in.” The localized expertise Quinnell and
his team of nearly 70 sales people offer the community puts Royal LePage’s clients at a distinct advantage when it comes to marketing property. “In 2014, we helped more buyers from North Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam move to Maple Ridge than in previous years, including a spike in luxury home sales,” the realtor says, noting his realtors adopt a team mentality to help each other’s respective clients. “Whatever benefits the client, in the end, benefits us.” Quinnell says one of Royal LePage’s main goals is focusing on education, especially for the new buyers who need to understand the market in the price ranges available to them. His Royal LePage office is also home to Client First Mortgage Solutions, an in-house company which helps clients go through their finances and make independent recommendations. But it’s not just the new buyers making use of all the extra assistance Royal LePage offers. Many older clients, who may have lived in the same home for decades, of-
2015
ten need to be brought up to date with the current pressures and demands of real estate. Many of these people are downsizing from full-size houses to condominiums and Royal LePage realtors are there with them at every step. “If clients are choosing to market their property, we’re the best choice, from a statistical point of view,” said Quinnell. Consulting with these clients on how to reduce all the belongings they’ve accumulated over the years is another of the small things Quinnell believes can make a huge difference as people transition in life. “They need somebody who they can trust, and they trust you more when you can educate them instead of pressuring them.” For Quinnell, keeping his staff informed is just as important as educating clients. A lawyer visits the office each month to share information with sales reps on new laws affecting real estate sales, as well as to answer any questions realtors may have. Furthermore, Quinnell also offers his employees training workshops at the end of each week. Sales people learn about everything from the escarpment area in Maple Ridge to the proper way of understanding titles and easements. This focus on education means it’s
been much easier for both clients and salespeople to adapt to the changing market. “People are coming out here to buy a condo now,” Quinnell says, adding that is the biggest change he’s seen since he started working in real estate sales 50 years ago. “Most people are going for condos because that’s what affordable. That’s a big part of the business. I think a lot of people, if they could, they would still buy the house with the white picket fence. But the prices are just too high.” Quinnell says Maple Ridge has transformed in a significant way because of these developments and the new residents they attract. “The buyers move here for two reasons: one is price and the other is community. They realize we have a lot to offer. From our parks to just our general feel of the town, the sports programs for kids, our schools are very, very good. All those things that make up a community are very appealing.” “Since we live in such a tight knit community, our office embraces the responsibility to give back to numerous non-profits. It is our belief that supporting the community you live in is a must.”

CONSUMER TIPS When Choosing a Child Care Provider, ask:
How does the centre communicate with me and how often? How can I communicate with the centre or my child’s teacher? Does the provider match my family’s lifestyle choices (i.e. cloth diapers, dietary restrictions, immunizations)? Is the provider licensed/accredited, and have their policies published and available to the parent? Do they offer on-site preschool and/or kindergarten, and transportation to schools? How does the provider support my whole family (i.e. parent meet up groups, fitness classes, subsidy)?
BrightPath Early Learning & Childcare
A PATH FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE With the growing educational demands being placed on young children, it is becoming more difficult to choose an option that truly integrates with a family’s lifestyle. Managing that fine balance between parent and child expectations in a early childhood education program is a daunting task but BrightPath Kids is definitely up to the challenge. Both the parents and children that have experienced this comprehensive curriculum offering echo that sentiment. “I like the educational setting and the ways educators pour their heart out to the kids” says Candice Wilke whose child attends in Port Moody, “They always find ways to keep my daughter developing.” To BrightPath, it’s the holistic approach that is important. Three and a half year old Bridget comments on the level of emotional connection “I love Kuntheary,” her all time favourite teacher, “because she eats at the table with me and likes to sing the happy day song with Miss Sheila and her guitar at circle”
(in reference to the music specialist that comes in weekly). From a proven and constantly adapting curriculum, intra-curricular programs that include classes such as yoga to programs like Partners in Parenting, BrightPath is on the forefront of the overall well-being of their children. While it’s obviously important to keep the children engaged, BrightPath has taken an additional step with the introduction of its new Parent Engagement app called BrightPath Connect. This application allows for midday communication between teacher and parent. This gives parents an opportunity to be more involved in their child’s life during
2015
the day. Mariya Malgazdharova comments “I quite enjoy the mobile parent engagement tool (BrightPath Connect) which has been implemented... It makes me feel connected to my child while she is in daycare, as well as provides opportunity to implement

some of her daycare activities at home. I think overall experience helps to understand what interests my child most. As a parent I truly feel engaged.” Linda Schmidt, Centre Director of BrightPath Maple Ridge, shares “we have a lot of parents that come in thinking we (BrightPath) are just a child care centre and they are surprised to learn of the extensive curriculum, the level of qualified staffing, and integration of fitness and healthy living into the everyday program. When parents see their child developing socially, emotional, and intellectually, they quickly see that it is so much more than just caring for children.” The future of our children is important to all of us and it’s nice to know that the bar has been raised. It seems with options like this our children’s future really is on a brighter path after all; and that’s a journey we all want them to benefit from.

Fuller Watson Brand Source
Dave and Justin Fuller
CONSUMER TIPS
Check out the space you have in your home and determine what will fit and look good. Carry a tape when shopping. When it comes to furniture. Most of the items have lots of options, when it comes to colour, fabric and finishing. Pick furniture to suit your lifestyle. Some furniture is built more strongly to suit different families.
When buying a mattress, a higher price does not necessarily mean a better mattress. Don’t overspend on appliance features you know deep down you’re never going to use. Get what you really need and save some money.
Great brands at a great price, in your community. Fuller Watson has proven itself to be a trusted and enduring part of the community. Today, the fourth generation of the Fuller family is at the helm of the Maple Ridge store, which started as a general store in 1924 before becoming a furniture, appliance and bedding store in the 1970s. Dave Fuller, one of the two sons of current owner Bruce Fuller, says their continued success is a result of offering great service and providing people with what they’re looking for.
“People think they need to go to the big shopping stores and big box stores to get thebrand name furniture and appliances, but we have it all in our community and the pricing is never an issue with the buying power of BrandSource. And, the service we believe is untouchable.”” “That’s the one and only reason we think we’re still here. It’s building those relationships, getting repeat customers, and giving people the service they deserve,” he says.
The customers do keep coming back – because they trust the staff at Fuller Watson to take care of their needs. “Everyday we see someone we’ve bumped into before,” Dave says. “It’s a huge turnover of the same customers we continue to serve, and we’re always looking for new ones, too.” Those who aren’t yet acquainted with Fuller Watson might not realize that there is a store in their community – 22390 Lougheed Highway – where they can shop locally and find a wide selection of top quality furniture and appliances. They can find all this right here, without having to drive across the Lower Mainland. Fuller Watson is able to access $11-billion in buying power by being a member of BrandSource, which combines the purchases of 4,500 stores across North America. Through the value of buying together with these other stores, Fuller Watson is able to offer great selection and keep prices down. “It gives us the big box pricing with what we consider the ‘momand-pop store’ service we like to provide. You get the best of both worlds,” according to Dave. Fuller Watson has been so successful against the big box stores over their
2015
years because of their wide selection. Unlike bigger stores that may not have control over the brands they are given and have to sell, Fuller Watson likes to hand-select the brands it wants to sell. “We’re a mom-and-pop store that’s been here for 90 years, but it’s not 90-year-old furniture. We’re up to date with our product selection, and we have control over the brands we like to carry,” says Dave. Fuller Watson offers appliance brands such as GE, GE Profile, GE Café and GE Monogram appliances, and their furniture department includes Palliser, La-Z-Boy, Ashley, England and other brands. Fuller Watson also carries top named North American brands such as the Simmons Beautyrest line. Fuller Watson meets customers at every step of the way. Unlike chain stores – which typically offer “centralized” service based three time zones away in Ontario – all delivery, installation, financing programs and repairs are done in-house. “There’s no hired-out delivery, no hired-out technicians, it’s all done here,” Dave says, adding, “There’s no third party at any point in the lifetime of what you’re buying here.” Fuller Watson also strives to offer
a relaxed shopping experience. “There’s no high pressure, and no commission,” Dave explains. “If you want to come in and browse and take seven, eight, nine, ten different times popping in, you can do that without people down your throats the whole way through.” The importance of great customer relations is something that Dave said he learned over the years that he has worked in the family business. He and brother Justin experienced the store from the ground up – starting in the warehouse, working their way up into warehouse managers, moving into sales, and now to the point where they’re running the store with dad Bruce. Dave sums up what he’s learned over the years: “Treat people shopping how you want to be treated shopping.” By focusing on local ownership, buying power that leads to great pricing, and continual exceptional customer service, the Fuller family aims to stay in the community for many years to come and continue to help customers find the right appliance, furniture set, or bed.

Take it one day at time. Set achievable daily goals and get rewards right away. Work within your fitness range. If you do it and enjoy it, you’ll naturally be motivated, push forward and get results. Find a fitness partner. Working out or exercising with someone else provides instant motivation and makes it more enjoyable.

Get advice from an expert. A professional trainer can get you started on a plan that works. Jane Dela Cruz works out in the women only section of In The Zone Fitness.
Stay consistent. Finding a balanced approach to fitness and health is key.
In the Zone Fitness Club is Pitt Meadows’ very own community gym. The facility itself is huge – about 8,000 square feet – but there is a small-town feel to it that clients love, says coowner Hassan Ngobi. “My feeling is that our customer service sets us apart from other gyms,” Hassan says. “Our staff know most members and greet them by name and there is a great community feel here.”
“We’re willing to work one-on-one with our clients and if something isn’t working, we’ll find a solution that works best for them” Hassan Ngobi Another outstanding feature of In the Zone Fitness is the fact Hassan, a professional athlete for almost 20 years, can be found working out or training on
most days. Having the on-site presence is key to helping clients achieve their goals, according to Hassan. “It’s very important, I think, for me to be there. I have a broad knowledge on a range of exercise techniques and can help people get the most out of their workout. It’s key to my business.” Hassan enjoys sharing ideas and trading tips with the other gym users. “I work hard every day to stay in good shape. It’s good for my clients to see that I also have to put in a lot of hard work.” The fitness centre features a wide range of strength training equipment and variety of cardio machines, such as treadmills, step machines, spin bikes, ellipticals and rowing machines. There’s also a women’s-only area. “A person who has never worked out can come in and work out on the machines and cardio, but at the same time, someone training for a fitness competition can also meet their needs at our gym,” says Hassan.

Anyone looking to see if In the Zone Fitness is the gym for them, can sign up for a trial seven-day membership.
The bootcamps offered at In the Zone are popular because people who wouldn’t normally go to the gym come with friends and get exercise in a social environment. Sessions are offered both indoor and outdoor.
With so much experience in the world of fitness, Hassan is well qualified to develop a personal training plan for all ages, abilities and goals. Everyone is different, he says, and realizes that what works for one person isn’t necessarily going to work for the next.
Hassan and his wife Tina have owned the fitness centre for just over two years. Already in that short amount of time, they have extensively renovated the facilities, added lots of new equipment and are integrating a smoothie bar into the facility.
“We’re willing to work one-on-one with our clients and if something isn’t working, we’ll find a solution that works best for them,” he comments, adding, “I’m able to share my previous experience with them and we develop a personal plan.”.

Healthy, natural products are the cornerstone of Roots Jeff Miller has run Roots Natural Organic Foods for over two decades now, but the store has changed significantly in that time. “I bought it 23 years ago,” Jeff says. “It was a quarter of the size it is now.” There have been significant product changes in that time, too, as the store has evolved from a specialty shop into a full-service organic grocery. “It was your typical hippie granola thing,” Jeff says. “Now we’re full-service.” Jeff says the store’s mission hasn’t
“You don’t have to read the labels because we do” Jeff Miller, Roots Natural Owner changed, however. “We’re trying to help people be healthy,” he says. “We try to sell good natural products.” Jeff says eating properly and living healthily is a lifestyle, and he’s tried to make his store a community-focused place that can help people do that. “That’s the way I live,” he says. “I made it a store I would
want to shop in.” Jeff says it can be difficult for people to make sure they’re buying natural products at a regular grocery store, which is where Roots Natural comes in. “We do the shopping for you,” he says. “You don’t have to read the labels, because we do. We stand behind all our products.” Jeff co-owns the store with his wife, Tammy. She says they’re committed to ensuring only the best products are sold in their store. “We don’t sell it unless we’ve tried it,” she says. A growing part of their business has been natural dietary supplements, which Jeff says are crucial to overall health in this era of heavily processed foods. “No matter how good you think you eat these days, you can’t get everything from your foods,” he says. “You’ve got to fill that gap, and that’s what the supplements do.” The store was founded in 1971, and Jeff says it’s the oldest remaining natural foods store in the Lower

Mainland. He says Maple Ridge has been the perfect location for him. “The customer base is awesome,” he says. “The loyal day-to-day customer has built our business. If you want to build a good natural food customer base, this is the place to build it.” Jeff says many of his customers and their families have been coming to the store for decades. “It’s a whole community,” he says. “We’ve hired lots of our customers’ kids.”
The store also hosts speakers on healthy living. Jeff says the speakers are an important part of their goal to improve people’s health. “We just try to educate people,” he says. Jeff says the education has caught on, as there’s an ever-growing interest in natural foods. “Health foods aren’t just for hippies any more, they’re for everyone,” he says. “It’s a part of everyday life; it’s a lifestyle.”
Root’s Natural has been serving customers since 1971.

Pre-planning your funeral wishes in advance alleviates the stress on members of your family, as they are overcome with grief. When making your plans for funeral arrangements, consider the feelings and needs of your family members and those who love you. If the estate or surviving family of the deceased person has no immediate resources to meet the funeral costs, there are supplements that may be provided to pay for necessary funeral costs of any person who dies in British Columbia.

Putting Your Family at Ease is Our Privilege Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel & Crematorium has been serving the community for 50 years. As one of six traditional family-owned and operated funeral homes still serving the Lower Mainland, it is all about their family helping your family through a very sensitive time in your life. Renee Taylor is the General Manager. “We are Maple Ridge’s only crematorium. Our newly renovated facilities means that our local residents can have all of their funeral needs met right here at home.” The business has deep community roots. Originally, Thomas Osborne moved to Maple Ridge from England in 1932 and operated Osborn’s Shoe Store. The business was passed down to Thomas’ children, Leslie and Irene in 1952, and they ran it until 1964 when the property was sold to build the Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel. Leslie and his wife Eileen passed the business on to their two daughters, Diane MacKenzie and Joan Gibson, who have continued the tradition of dedicated service for more than 50 years. In 1991, an onsite crematorium was added, followed by a patio room for receptions. Each upgrade has been made to provide better service. Renee points out, “We have always put our families first. Over the years it has been our goal to make this difficult time as easy as possible by assisting with the burden of the arrangements, and allowing our clients
to share more time with their families.” “Funerals do not need to be expensive to be meaningful. When someone dies, the emotions, fears and financial concerns can be overwhelming. Being able to come to one place is convenient for family members. We can plan it all from a simple cremation to a full traditional service in our chapel or church, followed by cremation or burial.” When it comes to handling a sensitive situation like the passing of a loved one, it is imperative that the funeral home is run by people who truly care. Renee points out that the team at Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel is proud to be made up of licensed professionals who have dedicated their lives to the business, and consider it a privilege to help family members during such a difficult time. “Here in our funeral home, a family’s feelings are safe and respected. We help them through each step, and once a family comes into our care, we are able to care for them until all the arrangements are completed, including our complimentary and extensive AfterCare Program, where we help families

complete paperwork required following a death.” This can include completing applications for Canada Pension benefits, cancellation of health card, driver’s licence, passport and Social Insurance number. The program also offers information regarding pensions, insurance claims, settling estates and other legal issues.
“This is our community, it is our role and responsibility to educate and advise on end-of-life issues.” Renee Taylor. Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel The care and compassion of the funeral home’s team isn’t just extended following a death; they provide assistance beforehand as well. “We hold a ‘Being Prepared Made Simple’ seminar every September,” Renee explains. “The educational program includes a dinner and key speakers who address important issues such as pensions, estates, elder
care and how you can be prepared emotionally and financially. This aids in making sure all the arrangements are communicated and understood by everyone.” Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel appreciates the support of the community and gives back whenever it can. “We contribute to Kidsport BC and the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation. We have employees serving on the Board of the Chamber of Commerce, Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation and other local community organizations. We sponsor “Drugs and Addictions - Facts you Need to Know,” a magazine that is distributed to the local high schools. We see first-hand what social addictions can do to families.” “We are also proud members of the Canadian Independent Group of Funeral Homes, the British Columbia Funeral Association, Funeral Service Association of Canada, Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau, with 15 years of A+ rating.” “This is our community, it is our role and responsibility to educate and advise on end-of-life issues,” says Taylor. “For us, being able to put people at ease is truly a honour and privilege.” The Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel and Crematorium is located at 11969 – 216th Street in Maple Ridge. John Laanstra, Owner.
Helping You Put Your Best Foot Forward Payton & Buckle Fine Footwear is a locally owned and operated shoe store that began in Chilliwack in the 1940’s. Still operating successfully in the Chilliwack downtown core, the Chilliwack store is joined by two more locations now serving the valley in Abbotsford and a new store opened last year in Pitt Meadows. “John Laanstra is the owner of Payton & Buckle and he is very pleased with the success at the Pitt Meadows location.
“Our first year surpassed our projected budget” John, Owner John knows the shoe business. He started in sales 32 years ago at the Chilliwack store then after nine years he bought a portion of the business with his partner Erwin Hubert. In 2007, John bought his partner out and became the owner of the business. “That was always my plan, to be the successor and have my own business. I sensed there was a niche here in Pitt Meadows as we had many customers from Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge coming to our Abbotsford location. Knowing that, I assumed we were losing prospective customers from Langley
and Vancouver as well.” John’s instincts paid off and he has been very pleased with the acceptance of the new location. “We are seeing new and old customers in the Pitt Meadows store and our sales have exceeded our expectations. When we opened our Abbotsford store, it took longer to get off the ground but this location has been very busy right from the start.” The company’s first try at expansion was a store in Mission in the 1950’s. That store is no longer there but serving the valley is one of John’s prime objectives. ”Our Pitt Meadows store is in the Meadowtown Centre on Lougheed highway and we are easily visible from the road. Many customers comment that they came in because they saw our sign.” At Payton and Buckle they specialize in quality shoes and carry a variety of widths to suit every foot. “We have all the available widths on hand from narrow to wide so you can find that shoe that is comfortable and fits just right.” “Whether you are looking to get a dress shoe for a night out, comfy shoes

for work, or a walking shoe that will fit your orthotic, we have what you want. Our ladies shoes range in sizes from 5 – 12 in all available widths in select sizes and our men’s shoes are available in sizes 7.5 – 14 with all widths available in select sizes. We also carry quality leather and fabric purses.” Laanstra stresses to his staff the importance of customer service. “We still sit down with our customers and make sure they are getting the right information to buy the proper shoe. People appreciate it when we have the answer to their question. Our staff are taught to say they will find the answer if they don’t have it readily available.” Payton and Buckle has the biggest selection of Clarks shoes in B.C. “Clarks is our key brand,” John points out, but
we also sell Josef Seibel, Ecco, Pikolinos, Rieker, Vionic, Bernie Mev and Miz Mooz. When we opened we carried kid’s shoes as well but we have discontinued them as of January 31st. Our market remains mostly women’s shoes catering to women from 30 – 60.” John is quick to point out, “People discover that good quality shoes not only last longer but they are more comfortable and easier on your feet at the end of the day.” If you are looking for good quality shoes without having to drive out of town, stop by Payton and Buckle in Meadowtown Centre.

professional. The ambiance is warm, the finishes are top of the line and the food is second to none. What sets the Fox’s Reach Pub and Grill apart from the rest is the community feel, where everyone is welcomed, says manager Josh Flett. “When you come into our bar and restaurant, it’s as nice as some of the more well-known high-end chain establishments, but there’s a hometown feel here,” he says. “The service here is awesome, our food is amazing, the drinks are colder than anywhere else and I am very competitively priced. Not only that, but we have the most fun.” Whether you are looking for a casual dinner or a fine dining experience, Fox’s Reach Pub and Grill fits the bill. And it’s not just open to the over-19 crowd. Children are also welcome on the restaurant side of the establishment. One look at the menu and you can tell Fox’s Reach Pub and Grill Pub is different from the competition. The food is fresh, homemade, never frozen. The bread and pasta are made on site and the french fries are hand cut. The hamburgers are ground Triple A beef and the steaks are hand carved daily.

“We’ve put a lot of work into making the Fox’s Reach Pub and Grill a destination in Maple Ridge,” Flett says. “The atmosphere here is great and we have events throughout the year that appeal to every taste.” The Fox’s Reach Pub and Grill is also the perfect place to watch a game or a big event. There are so many TVs, you can see the action from every seat. Fox’s Reach Pub and Grill just wrapped up the biggest NFL pool in Maple Ridge and gave away weekly prizes during Monday night football. At last month’s Super Bowl, Fox’s Reach Pub and Grill was packed with rabid football fans and gave away two trips to Las Vegas, a trip to Hawaii and a trip to Mexico, a flat-screen TV and jerseys from the teams that advanced to both the AFC and NFC championships, plus a Seattle Seahawks jersey. But the Fox’s Reach Pub and Grill’s relationship with Maple Ridge isn’t simply one-sided. It gives back to the community at every opportunity. The Fox’s Reach Pub and Grill holds meat draws every Saturday at 3, 4 or 5 p.m. All proceeds from the meat draw go to local worthy causes like the Maple Ridge Lions Club and Timmy’s Christmas Telethon. Also, for the past two years, the Fox’s Reach Pub and Grill has been sponsoring a Meadow Ridge Barracudas girls’ minor hockey team.
“The community is what we’re all about,” Flett says. “Without the people of this community, we’d be nowhere.” Fox’s Reach Pub and Grill is a familyowned business, not a chain. “You walk in the door and you can find someone from our family here. It’s all about family and this community is a part of that family. It’s important that the community is taken care of because the community has taken care of us.” Located just across the parking lot from the Fox’s Reach Pub and Grill is its Specialty Liquor Store, which features the largest selection of VQA wines in the province, including favourites such as Oculus, Burrowing Owl and Nota Bene. It also carries an extensive selection of imported wines, as well as a full range of spirits, cider, coolers and numerous unique local beers. The Specialty Liquor Store can handle the demands of any size party or wedding and carries snacks, ice, mix and a portable draft system. The liquor store is open 365 days a year. “After you come to our place, you won’t want to go anywhere else.” • For more information on the Fox’s Reach Pub and Grill and the Specialty Liquor Store and to find out the daily specials, upcoming events and hours, go to www.foxsreach.ca.

Parents need to be the adult in the relationship. Parenting is not about being your child’s best friend. Understand the importance of sleep and good nutrition. Children really do need more than eight hours of sleep per night, more in the range of 10-12 hours.

But because of growing demand, we’re starting to split at the seams,” continued Lande. “We want to be able to have more families and extend into adolescent grades, but to do this, we need more space.” In October, in celebration of its 30th anniversary, Meadow Montessori is hosting a gala to kick off a fundraising drive to allow the independent school to purchase land and build a larger school and expand programming. “This upcoming year is a big year for the school. We would like to bring
back some parents and some teachers and people who have been involved in the school to enjoy a gala fundraising event,” Lande said. “After 30 years, we have a lot of roots in the community, and we look forward to a reunion with those who have come before us.” Although the school has three decades of history in the community, Meadow Montessori has remained relatively unknown. But the school is almost always full to capacity, Lande explained. “We’ve been here for a long time, but a lot of people don’t know about us and that’s because we generally get our parents through word of mouth. We’re here and we’re a big part of the community. To this end, I would really like to get some business and community leaders on board to help really build the school. After all, our students are tomorrow’s leaders.” Montessori is different from the traditional school system in a number of ways, Lande said. All students have their own individualized learning plan and they are given the freedom to decide when they complete the
2015
objectives. Right now, there are 28 students in the elementary school: 14 in Kindergarten and Grade 1, and 14 in grades 2 to 6. Next year it will be 35 students. But it all starts at a very early age. The school’s preschool program is fully integrated and focused on preparing the children for Kindergarten and their educational careers. They have music, dance and Spanish language classes in their schedules, and the older students spend time mentoring the younger ones. Programming is centered around five general areas of study: practical life, sensorial learning, math, language, geography, and culture. “Montessori education is very hands-on. The materials entice the children. There are lots of shapes, forms, colours,” she said. “We foster a love for learning in them, and it lasts a lifetime.”
how to respect each other. Your first lessons in a Montessori classroom are grace and courtesy” said Lande, who has been at Meadow Montessori for 11 years. “All of this is instilled in them so that when they move on to Kindergarten, they’re ready and they’re happy to be there.” Meadow Montessori is a registered non-profit organization and an accredited member of the Federation of Independent School Association of B.C., teaching the full provincial curriculum with highly-trained Montessori specialists. “We guide our students and, yes, they get the work done. But we have respect for the children here, and they have respect for each other, themselves, and the teachers. We firmly believe this mutual respect is needed in tomorrow’s leaders, so this is something that we value and emphasize at all levels.”
By the time you have finished a Montessori preschool, you have passed the Kindergarten curriculum for B.C., Lande said.
Registration for preschool and all grades is happening now, and filling up fast.
“In a Montessori preschool, our young students can write, read, and do arithmetic – and they certainly know how to put their hand up, their responsibilities in the classroom, and

Meadow Montessori Preschool
Celebrating 30 Years Our Students are Tomorrow’s Leaders Maple Ridge’s Only Montessori K-7 Elementary and Preschool What inspires someone to become a leader later in life starts at a young age—during the most formative years of pre-school, kindergarten, and early elementary. For it is in this time that tomorrow’s leaders learn the joy of education. Prepare your child for a lifetime love of learning – start them in preschool. Preschool is for teaching a child to be a student. They gain thinking skills, self-awareness and social skills. They learn to share, to take turns, how to cooperate and respect others; these are all skills that once learned leave room for the pre- academic/ academic learning that happens in Kindergarten and beyond. For 30 years, our preschool students have been taking their love of learning far beyond their Kindergarten years. Please explore our website and contact us to arrange a tour of our school and meet our staff. Be a leader.

Dr. Danie Gouws
Cloud 9 Beauty
Heidi Cannon and Chantal Schutz
Cloud Nine and Skin Health, merging to become the new Cloud 9 Beauty; a wonderful case of serendipity! When Dr. Danie Gouws and Chartered Accountant Chantal Schutz first met nine years ago, the last thing on their minds was Botox and nail polish. Instead, they were running, jumping, doing push-ups and other fitness boot camp activities, and they were getting dirty. It was 5 o’clock in the morning, and the grueling pace left little time for much more than pleasantries.
“Our goal is to create a full-service approach to skin health and aesthetics that isn’t just skin deep. There’s not much value in looking good if you aren’t healthy and feeling good as well.“ Fast-forward a few years and the pair was together again thanks to the fact their respective children attended the same school. Now the time for conversation was at hand, and Chantal learned that Dr. Danie had a skin health and aesthetics practice in town, while the doctor learned that Chantal was a
business advisor who specialized in helping business owners and entrepreneurs achieve their business, financial and personal potential. They also worked together at Back In Motion Rehab, where Chantal was the Chief Financial Officer and Dr. Danie a medical assessment consultant.
experience clients love, all set in a beautiful, clean environment, plus the variety of environmentally-friendly products, excellent massages, pedicures, manicures and nail work and more that has made Cloud Nine the go-to aesthetics salon for discerning men and women.
It was a few years later that Chantal and her friend and partner, Wendy Dockerty, opened Cloud Nine Nail Bar, and a few months after that, a casual conversation between the business owners identified an opportunity that neither could pass up.
There will still be the valuable memberships that help regulars save money all year long, they’ll still have the great bridal, grad and birthday parties that clients love, and they’ll continue to
The space at Cloud Nine was renovated in the summer of 2014 and Dr. Danie’s clinic, called Skin Health Laser and Medical Spa, moved in to provide complementary medicallysupervised skin care services to the aesthetic services offered by Cloud Nine. Now, only nine months later, the companies have joined forces and are becoming the new Cloud 9 Beauty. It was a wonderful case of serendipity, and has been a successful joint enterprise since that time. Needless to say, everyone is very excited about the opportunities to help clients look and feel their best. In the next few months, the plan is to make some cosmetic and marketing changes to better merge the two businesses as they further implement the blending of their service offerings and client experiences, including a new logo, branding and website. Clients won’t experience much difference in terms of the upscale, professional experience they currently receive from both Cloud Nine and Skin Health. The two will still offer the pampering

ensure their guests get the best technicians and aesthetics staff in the business. For their part, Dr. Danie and his team, including professional fitness model Heidi Cannon and skilled medical esthetician Barb Kraft, will continue to ensure patients receive medicallysupervised skin heath and skin rejuvenation services They’ll continue to offer the full range of procedures – botox therapeutic and cosmetic, skin rejuvenation, laser hair removal, medical needling and much, much more – using state-of-the-art technology and resultsdriven products that are carefully sourced to ensure patients have a full range of treatment options to meet most budgets, timelines and needs. “Our goal,” says Heidi, “is to create a fullservice approach to skin health and aesthetics that isn’t just skin deep. There’s not much value in looking good if you aren’t healthy and feeling good as well.” “Not only that” adds Barb, “but with so many options available, its important that clients can feel that they are working with a team focused on their results who understand the products and are invested
in their well-being”. Dr. Danie concurs, stating the joint efforts of the two will be looking to offer women and men lots of choices so that they can look and feel their best regardless of what they do in their professional or personal lives. “Health is so important,” says the doctor. “And skin health is just as important as the health of the rest of the body, and while we offer many cosmetic procedures, we do so in conjunction with an overall focus on ensuring the client’s skin and greater health are part of the equation.” For their part, the Cloud Nine team members observe that the services offered on their side of the business are a key part in that health equation, in part because relaxation opportunities are often hard-won for busy, busy clients. In addition, the mental health benefits of doing things to make one’s self look good are just as vital as medical care that focuses on the physical alone. A positive attitude about one’s appearance can go a long way, she notes. Yes, it’s safe to say the entire group of dedicated professional staff here are very excited about the changes. What they’re most enthused about, however, is the opportunity that presents to create a unique oasis for harried clients who are looking to escape for a short time, and those who are looking to do something positive for their mental and physical health. If you’re looking for a change – for a new focus on health and beauty – then Cloud 9 Beauty is the place you should be taking yourself. Barb, Heidi, Danie and the Cloud Nine team are eager to make your visit one to remember.

Serving our community spirit for more than 50 years.
Valley Fair Mall: your community shopping centre A community shopping centre is a special place designed to create a focal point not only for commerce, but also for people to gather, interact, learn, have fun, and enjoy life. So many things can happen in a community shopping centre when it’s not all about the almighty dollar. Real people make real connections, smiles and laughter abound. And when it’s time to go, even though they may only have come to shop, people leave feeling upbeat and happy because the experience was so positive. ValleyFair Mall is a community mall in everything that label entails. Its situation in the heart of Maple Ridge has made the mall a community focal point for more than 50 years. During that time, great relationships have been forged between the people of Maple Ridge and the merchants who call the mall home. Those relationships have also been developed between the community and the Bucci family, which has owned ValleyFair Mall for the past 30 years. “It’s all about relationships,” says Mall manager Nicole Archer, who has been with the local shopping centre for the better part of a decade. In the ever-changing world of commerce, she says, the surging reality of online shopping and other economic
factors have changed the way people interact with retailers. As a result, many larger shopping centres and “big box” locations are seeing persistent vacancies. At ValleyFair Mall, however, the focus on community has enabled the mall to weather some tough times, with anchor tenants performing at top sales levels in their respective companies (London Drugs and Save-On Foods and Drugs), long-term tenants expanding and growing (ValleyFair Dental, Ryan Jewelers and MR Vitamin), and many new businesses opening up in recent years (Booster Juice, The Great Mongolian BBQ, Big Daddy’s Pizza, Papa Greek, Yummis Yogurt and Gameday Cutz to name a few). ValleyFair Mall has been home to many local business, big and small, over the years, and has nurtured the community spirit and economy. Maple Ridge has seen some incredible growth in the last few years, and has been fortunate that the community continues to embrace the shopping centre, thus allowing it to grow with them. “We believe that the selection offered
2015
by our 37 unique shops and services, along with our atmosphere and fun events, is what keeps local residents coming back for more.” The ValleyFair Mall family, from the owners through to the merchants, believes it’s important to embrace local artists and artisans, as well as not-for-profit community agencies and groups. “Commerce is just a part of what we do at the mall, and people appreciate what we do for the community, Archer says. “There are many people who are very protective of the centre. They’re here all the time, and they keep an eye on what’s going on because it’s ‘their’ shopping centre.” She says there are also a lot of ‘characters’ that are in the mall on an almost daily basis – people like Larry and ‘Grumpy,’ who everyone seems to know.
Larry and Val
“They’re the people who helps us make the mall fun,” Archer adds. “People feel ValleyFair Mall is ‘their mall’ because we do so much to make it a part of their community. “We’ve been loyal to the community, and in return they’ve been loyal to us. That loyalty is the heart and soul of this place, and we’re so happy to be part of Maple Ridge.”
