SPRING CLEANING IN FEBRUARY

BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff

Warm weather in the Trail area means that spring cleaning can start a bit early. Fred Romano got outdoors, raking up leaves that were hiding under the snow at his Sunningdale home on Monday afternoon.

Warm trend forces Salmo ski hill to close BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff

Blue skies and warm weather are great conditions for getting the rakes out early. But for boarders and skiers, the mild climate is leading the way to a rocky end for the local alpine season. So far, this winter's extremely mild conditions forced one local ski hill to shut down for the year. After a late start to the season due to rain over snow, the volunteer-run Salmo Ski Hill opened season Jan. 6 and closed just six weeks later on Feb. 12. Red Mountain Resort is holding on by making snow for the lower areas, says the hill's general manager Don

Thompson, and on Monday things remained good while staff continued to monitor the very early spring-like conditions. “This year is an anomaly,” he said. “Conditions are quite variable and can change dramatically during the day when the snow softens,” he explained. “(Skiers) enjoy groomed runs in the morning and by afternoon when the snow softens up it's good again on the top peaks.” All lifts remained open Monday until 3:30 p.m., though the Sally's Alley and Lower War Eagle runs on Red were closed, as was White Riot on Grey. Thompson said typically this time of year, the ski hill has well over two

metres of snow, but currently the snow pack is sitting at about 1.6 metres. “We are definitely looking forward to more precipitation by the end of February and through March,” he added. “But we are fortunate we are open, all the lifts are turning and everyone is having a good time.” Red's historical weather data dates back to 1905. Thompson noted there has been a few years on record with such a low snow pack in February, but none in recent memory. The hill faced tough times over a decade ago, when a lack of snow and warm temperatures led to a two-day operational shut down in 2001. See LACK, Page 3

Greater Trail's young men and women in blue will be out in their military attire for the first time since last fall. The Trail air cadets have had their trademark uniforms tucked away following the death of two Canadian soldiers in October. The military issued a blanket order preventing uniformed appearances in public. Royal Canadian Air Cadets were included as the organization is sponsored by the Department of National Defence. While cadets, junior rangers (JCR) and military personnel could wear their uniforms to and from home for related activities and supervised events, they were not authorized to stop in uniform to partake in un-sanctioned activities or be outfitted while fundraising. Since the rule was lifted in January, the local 531 squadron is returning to a normal routine, beginning with its first “tag day” fundraiser Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at various sites around town. For a little pocket change or more, donors will receive a tag, in this case a bookmark with cadet logo, and information about the organization. With the official go-ahead to become visible in blue, Major Kevin DeBiasio, the area Cadet Instructor Cadre for the Kootenay Wing, is asking civilians to become volunteer instructors, and to consider moving up the ranks to civilian then commanding officer. “Officers are needed throughout the West Kootenay,” he said. Tips lead cops to drug arrests BY LIZ BEVAN Times Staff

Phone calls from concerned Trail residents have led to the arrest of two people, charged with possession of drugs and a weapon. On Thursday night, officers, acting on tips from the public, pulled over a vehicle on Columbia Ave. “It was calls we had received about an address in Trail which led us to stopping the vehicle,” said Sergeant Darren Oelke of the Trail RCMP. Common reviews as tax time approaches

A

s you begin to think about tax preparation, here’s some insight to prevent your tax season from continuing beyond April 30.

Ron

Clarke Tax Tips & Pits

These are the more common claims reviewed by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and the typical taxpayer errors associated with them ... and tips to avoid them. Medical expenses because this claim can add up to big bucks, especially since it’s grouped as a family and can include dependants outside of the home. Make sure slips identify specifics and receipts are dated and marked paid. If partially paid by a benefits program, the portion you paid must be clear. Medicaments - vitamins, supplements, and the like - are not deductible even if prescribed by a medical professional. Moving expenses because some things aren’t deductible which seem logical to deduct. Ineligible expenses claimed in

error include mail forwarding, repairs to the old or new home, and job and house hunting trips. Any employer reimbursement reduces the claim by that amount, so report it. The claim cannot exceed the income earned that year at the new location. Carry forward the amount in excess of the income. Donations because so many worthy organizations issue slips to donors but not all can be claimed. CRA checks for official tax receipt status, even on the smallest of gift value. Tuition and education because these slips have to be official tax receipts or the expense cannot be claimed. Back in 2012, CRA became more inclusive as to what qualifies with almost all of these claims now reported on a T2202a. If not on this form, then the slip must state official tax receipt. This claim is transferable and two common errors occur. It can’t be claimed by a parent if the student has not filed a return. The student must sign the T2202a permitting the transfer. An unsigned form leads to a denied claim by CRA. RRSP contributions because people don’t realize they have to report investments made in the first 60 days of the current cal-

endar year on the tax return currently due. So, a February 2015 RRSP investment has to be reported on the 2014 return and if not used, carried forward to next year’s tax prep. There’s no trick to avoid these reviews, after all they’re random, right? The best defense is to accurately do your T1 return. The second defense is to set-up

for a quick, clean and painless review if it does happen. Deal with the review in a very timely manner. CRA gives 30 days and seldom will extend this. Fail to answer in 30 days, a re-assessment is automatic and a T1 adjustment is required to reinstate. Finally, if engaging a professional preparer to do your taxes, it’s fair to ask if they are

your first line of support in the case of a review, or are you on your own? If they do help, is it free or do they charge? Michael McNab, 3, takes advantage of unseasonably high temperatures in Trail on Monday by taking a trip down the slide at the playground in Gyro Park. The day reached a balmy 5 C in the Trail area, while other parts of the country are experiencing temperatures as low as -30 C.

Accused appeared in court Monday FROM PAGE 1 A search of the car turned up 12 grams of cocaine, some ecstasy pills, the painkiller Oxycodone, $800 cash and a large knife. The two occupants, Hollie Tinsley, 37, and Dale Foyle, 43, tried to leave the scene, but officers directed them to return to the vehicle where they were arrested on multiple charges. Sgt. Oelke says that cocaine and crack are prevalent around Trail, and public tips are vital in helping police curb illegal drug activity. “Cocaine and crack are very common and we definitely deal with the affects of it,” he said, adding that tips help police do their jobs more effectively. “Public tips are very important to us, whether it is Crime Stoppers tips or calls directly to (the detachment), the more eyes and ears we can have out there, the better.” On Monday, Tinsley and Foyle appeared in Nelson court to answer to numerous charges of possession of a controlled substance for the cocaine, ecstasy and Oxycodone and for Tinsley, a weapons charge for possession of the knife. Oelke says that anyone with information or concerns about illegal drugs or crimes in the Trail area should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-TIPS or the Trail RCMP detachment. ***** Elsewhere in the West Kootenay region, Slocan Lake RCMP received a report of a dead body about two kilometres south of Slocan on Sunday afternoon. The call came in around 2:30 p.m. Once officers arrived on the scene of the discovery, the body was removed from the area and transported to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital for a coroner’s investigation. Identification of the deceased is being withheld until a name can be confirmed and family can be notified. According to police, the investigation is now with the B.C. Coroner’s office.

Lack of snow plagues East Kootenay resorts FROM PAGE 1 According to a Jan. 24, 2001 Trail Times edition, Red’s snow base was 90 centimetres at the top of Granite Mountain, and reported only 150 skiers were showing up during the week. After fresh snowfall and backlash for skiers and businesses, the resort shortened a plan weeklong shutdown to just two days. The current alpine base is 155 cm, though there’s been no snowfall in the last seven days. However, 94 per cent of its runs are open. Whitewater Ski Resort reports a settle snowpack of 212 cm, and all lifts and 90 per cent of its runs are open. Things are even bleaker in the East Kootenay according to the Canadian Press ski report. Webcam shots at the Fernie Alpine Resort show patches or brown dirt and the resort is reporting a base of 138 cm and only 32 per cent of its runs are open. At Kimberley, the ski resort has a 98 cm base and 68 per cent of its runs opened. In Revelstoke, the resport is reporting only 63 per cent of its runs are open.

Trail Community in Bloom volunteers Ian Noakes and Annette Gallatin helped dis-assemble the winter baskets that had graced downtown Trail for the winter season. The baskets were being readied for the summer’s hanging arrangements.

Volunteers urgently needed to help program

FROM PAGE 1 “We need people willing to work with cadets and willing to go through the training program. Usually it’s once a week for normal parades and on average, one weekend activity each month.” The first step is to volunteer. “Come and see what it’s all about,” explained DeBiasio. “For example, if someone is qualified to teach first aid, they can start out doing that. That step is quick but only qualifies the person

for limited activities. Next is civilian instruction which is a bit more rigorous and to join, the person has to be approved by the military and their respective leagues.” Becoming a commanding officer, however requires more of a time commitment with distant education and travelling to sites on the coast. “Some of our best people that we work with are former cadets,” noted DeBiasio. “And those with military expe-

rience, or someone involved in aviation, because the kids like having real world knowledge come to them. But it can be anyone and we can always use more, including kids.” Currently there are 120 air cadets involved in the West Kootenay’s units from Trail, Castlegar, Nelson, and Grand Forks. For more information on becoming part of the air cadets, visit bc.aircadetleagueofcanada.ca or cadets. ca.

City approves deer cull over next few weeks By Arne Petryshen Cranbrook Townsman

Cranbrook city council approved a 50 deer cull that will take place in the next few weeks. At the Feb. 11 budget meeting, city staff recommended that council not go forward with a late winter cull, recommending instead that council seek a Wildlife Act Permit from Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations to go ahead

with a fall 2015 cull. The city’s permit expires March 15, 2015. Chris Zettel, the city’s Corporate Communications Officer, explained that back in July council applied for the permit following a recommendation from the Urban Deer Management Advisory Committee. The permit was received from the province in October, 2014. At the following council meeting,

city staff presented the information on the permit, and that’s where is stalled, with the previous council electing to send the decision forward to the incoming council to deal with after the November 2014 election. Z ettel said there would be minimal cost for contracting time if the cull is not successful. Mayor Lee Pratt echoed the feelings of other councillors.

“The public spoke, it was 70 per cent in favour of a cull,” Pratt said. “I think that council owes it to those people to carry on with

the cull. Unfortunately, right now, because of the timeframe we’re not going to get 50 animals. but I support moving on with it.”

For the Record The story “Nelson council rejects Trail’s request for support” (Trail Times Feb. 11) incorrectly stated that Nelson city councillor Robin Cherbo opposed writing a letter of support for the City of Trail’s infrastructure application to build a secondary access to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital. In fact, he spoke in favour. Councillor Michael Dailly was opposed.

Can I straighten my teeth without Braces?

Invisalign® can be a great and less visible way for Adults and Teens to improve their smile and bite. I have been utilizing Invisalign® for more than 10 years, and through my experience and technology improvements I am now able to recommend it for many more Orthodontic patients than in the past. A 3D image is made of the patient’s mouth, so that the Orthodontist can plan and program the desired tooth movements. Once the ideal position of each tooth is decided on, a series of clear, thin trays called “Aligners” are manufactured. Each Aligner will move the teeth by up to 0.25mm towards their new “straight” position. The total number of aligners (and the time it takes) depends on how crooked your teeth are and how much bite correction is needed. Aligners can be removed for eating and brushing/flossing but must be worn the rest of the time to get a successful result. Say Hello to your brand new smile!

Landslide closes highway By Richard Rolke Vernon Morning Star

Mild weather is likely to blame for a landslide that closed busy Highway 97A and damaged a home. Early Monday morning, mud crossed the highway near Kingbaker Creek Resort just north of Grindrod. “The cause of the slide is still under investigation, but likely related to unseasonably warm and wet conditions over the past week,” states the Ministry of Transportation. It’s expected single-lane traffic will resume by early afternoon Monday after a geotechnical study was done of the site. A home was impacted by the slide above the highway and ministry staff alerted Emergency Management B.C. and the Regional District of North Okanagan about the situation. “The home was knocked off the foundation and was heavily damaged. There are no reports of any injuries,” stated the ministry. “Several vehicles parked on the property were pushed onto the highway.”

Tip in alleged shopping Rail strike ends as parties agree to resume talks mall plot most significant ever: Crime Stoppers THE CANADIAN PRESS HALIFAX - The head of Crime Stoppers in Canada says the tip regarding the alleged mall shooting plot in Halifax was likely the most significant ever received in this country for a police investigation. Ralph Page, president of the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association, said it is an indication of the organization’s role in crime prevention. Police in Halifax have charged two people with conspiracy to commit murder in connection with an alleged plan to carry out an attack at the Halifax Shopping Centre on Valentine’s Day. They’re due to appear in court on Tuesday to face the allegations against them. Police had no advanced warning of the alleged plans other than an anonymous tip, said RCMP Asst. Commissioner Brian Brennan. “This investigation started immediately after that single Crime Stoppers tip came in,” he told reporters. Police have said the tip came from within Canada, but have not said anything more specific due to the anonymous nature of the Crime Stoppers

system. “Anonymity is basically what we sell, what people trust. So we protect that at all costs,” said Ralph Page of Crime Stoppers. There are more than 100 local Crime Stoppers programs across Canada, said Page, and each is a charity operated by volunteers. Page said every program guarantees the anonymity of the person submitting the tip, whether by phone or through an encrypted online submission. Crime Stoppers began in the United States in 1976 to help

local police departments solve crimes by receiving anonymous tips. In Canada, tips submitted through the program have helped lead to more than 190,000 arrests, according to the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association website. Over time the role of Crime Stoppers has expanded from aiding in crime-solving to also aiding in crime prevention, explained Page. “I think the thing that happened in Halifax is probably the most significant tip that we’ve ever taken in Canada in terms of our vision of trying to prevent crime,” said Page. “It’s kind of a tribute to the Crime Stoppers programs that the awareness level is high enough out in the community for people to think of them and in this particular case save a horrible thing from happening.”

The strike by 3,300 locomotive engineers and other CP (TSX:CP) train workers began Sunday. Earlier Monday, as the House of Commons debated the merits of the back-to-work bill, Leitch said the strike could have cost the Canadian economy more than $200 million in lost GDP every week. Later Monday, the Teamsters Canada union announced on Twitter that the CP strike had ended. “A mediator will be named,” said the tweet. “Details to come.” Earlier, Teamsters union president Douglas Finnson had said he was disappointed by news of a back-to-work bill, calling it “premature and unnecessary.” He said the crucial issues of driver fatigue and working conditions were best settled through negotiations. Peter Edwards, vice-president of labour relations for CP Rail, said Sunday he supported the government’s bill after negotiations failed.

THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - A day-old strike at Canadian Pacific Railway screeched to an unexpected halt Monday with the company and its union agreeing to binding arbitration just hours before employees were to be legislated back to work. Labour Minister Kellie Leitch was on the verge of introducing a bill to end the labour dispute when she suddenly emerged from the House of Commons to reveal the two sides had beaten her to it. Leitch welcomed the sudden willingness by both sides to resume talks through a mediator - a development that had seemed impossible just hours earlier. “I do believe there are still numerous issues on the table and I’m confident that the mediation and arbitration process will get them to the place where they need to be,” she said. “Our intention is to get service back working at 100 per cent by tomorrow morning,” Leitch added.

Annual health care crisis grips B.C.

T

he annual ritual of declaring a crisis in health care is upon us, with the B.C. Liberal government boasting that we have the best system in Canada, while the NDP and the B.C. Nurses’ Union try to portray it as the worst. The BCNU is the last big public sector union still to settle in the latest round of contract talks. Feeding horror stories to the media is part of its strategy, and this time it was a patient at Abbotsford Hospital assigned a bed in a small shower room for a month due to chronic overcrowding. Hospital officials said his care wasn’t compromised. We’ve seen it in Abbotsford, Surrey and elsewhere: a new hospital or expansion is built and is immediately overcrowded. We are reminded every winter that influenza season brings a wave of people

into emergency, expecting treatment for a viral infection that in most cases can only run its course. Many people still don’t understand what “the flu” is, beyond the notion that it sounds serious enough to tell the boss you won’t be in to work. And as fewer doctors choose the endless demands of family practice, the expectation that all problems must be dealt with quickly and for free seems to grow as inexorably as the health care budget. An emergency physician of my acquaintance provided a typical scenario for night shift at the ER. Where once nights were quiet, now there are patients waiting for hours, around the clock. Several are drunk, and one has urinated on the floor. Surveys show as many as half of ER visits are alcohol-related, from

overdoses to fights, falls, car crashes and chronic conditions. Into this chaos comes a mother with her young child, who has nasal and chest congestion. The child’s cough led her to throw up, so off to ER they went, blithely assuming that this is where you bring a kid with a cold. This week’s B.C. budget brings us a step closer to the moment when half of all provincial revenues go to keep the health care

system running. In the legislature, NDP health critic Judy Darcy blasted Health Minister Terry Lake for the government’s failure to keep its 2010 promise to find everyone in B.C. a family doctor. Lake allowed they’re still working on that, and then plugged the latest Conference Board of Canada study showing B.C. ranks third in the world in health care outcomes, second only to Switzerland and Sweden. Darcy, a former president of the Hospital Employees’ Union, was quick to respond: “This is surely a first in question period, the Minister of Health going back to the record of the NDP government in the 1990s, because we’ve had the best health outcomes in Canada since 1993. The fact is that we exercise more, we smoke less and we drink less,

and that’s to the credit of British Columbians.” We also have more elderly people, as Premier Christy Clark argued in 2011 when the federal government changed its financing formula. After years of increasing transfers by six per cent per year, the late federal finance minister Jim Flaherty announced that starting in 2014, increases would be tied to economic growth, but wouldn’t fall below three per cent. This of course was treated as a cut, rather than continued increases above inflation. But there it is, and all provinces have to deal with it. Darcy is quite right that personal responsibility is the key, something to remember as the usual squabbling of special interests continues. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Rosie O’Donnell has ended her second stint on “The View,” her goodbye about as short as her tenure. Holding her toddler daughter, O’Donnell made her exit Thursday in a segment that lasted barely 40 seconds. She thanked the show’s creator, Barbara Walters, and promised to bring her glue gun back someday for a crafting segment. She had returned to “The View” in September, part of a revamp aimed at stopping a ratings slide, joining Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie Perez and Nicolle Wallace on the panel. It hasn’t gone as well as ABC planned, with the CBS knockoff “The Talk” getting closer in the ratings.

that would allow a doctor to help consenting adults terminate their lives. Or the government could bring in new legislation fulfilling the Supreme Court’s call to provide competent adults access to physician-assisted death if they suffer from a “grievous and irremediable medical condition.” MacKay has said the government intends to proceed carefully, studying a wide variety of material, including private member’s bills and the rightto-die legislation now in force in Quebec. But Harper, and all party leaders, should make one thing clear at the outset — that Parliament’s decision will be a free vote, with MPs permitted to take a stand unhindered by pressure to follow a party line. On this issue, in particular, our elected representatives should be free to follow their conscience.

which allows a government to uphold a law even if it violates Canadians’ Charter-protected rights. The court ruled unanimously last week that existing laws making assisted suicide a criminal act have the effect of condemning some vulnerable people to “a life of severe and intolerable suffering.” The court gave Parliament a year to replace the offending sections of the Criminal Code. If Ottawa does nothing, the current law will become void, leaving the issue — and suffering patients — in legal limbo. There’s no excuse for such a gross dereliction of legislative duty. Canadians need, want and deserve clear and reasonable laws on assisted dying. There are two sensible ways forward. Parliament could throw its support behind a private member’s bill introduced by Tory MP Steven Fletcher

An editorial from the Toronto Star At least one objectionable response to the Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling on doctorassisted suicide appears to have been shelved, and that’s worth hailing as a positive move. A further welcome step would be for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to set partisanship aside and declare a free vote in Parliament on what is, quite literally, a life-or-death issue. What’s evidently off the table is any effort to set aside the court’s ruling by invoking the notwithstanding clause in Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms. When asked if the court’s decision might be overridden in that way, Justice Minister Peter MacKay replied, “Don’t count on it.” That’s the right position to take. No federal government has ever invoked this clause,

ism’s failures. Communism, when practiced in fact (China before Deng Xiaoping’s reforms as one example) requires the abolition of individual choice and complete subjugation to the ruling elite – precisely because choice otherwise undermines forced collectivism. One result has always been economic shortages of every conceivable good; another is endemic repression as governments seek to smother a basic human impulse: to openly barter with others and buy goods and services at an agreed-upon price. As Jeanne Kirkpatrick famously wrote in 1979, unlike traditional dictatorships, which abused direct opponents but felt no need to control every aspect of every citizen’s life, revolutionary communist regimes created refugees by the millions. Kirkpatrick, later a U.S. ambassador the United Nations, argued that was because such governments “claim jurisdiction over the whole life of the society and make demands for change that so violate internalized values and habits that inhabitants flee.” Those that did not flee suffered even more: In 1999, a number of French authors catalogued communism’s death toll: nearly 100 million people. Unlike the iron fist of communism, capitalism’s incidents of harm (recall the mugging in Central Park) result not from government oppression but from the nature of freedom itself. Misguided newspaper columns notwithstanding, in theory, practice and historical record, there’s no comparison between capitalism and communism. Mark Milke is a Senior Fellow at the Fraser Institute.

PEOPLE

Gary Kenneth Stanton

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Gary Kenneth Stanton. Born, June 26, 1956, Gary passed away peacefully at his home on February 5, 2015 at the age of 58 years. Born in Trail, Gary was raised and educated in Rossland. Once the family settled, Gary was immersed in many local sports; this included Little League Baseball, Minor Hockey, Lacrosse, Rugby and Soccer. Gary excelled in all, including successful seasons as a crafty left winger with the Rossland Junior Warriors. His love of sport continued throughout his life, enjoying recreational hockey, slo-pitch and most recently curling. Gary recently retired as a Steam Engineer with Teck Cominco after 37 years. He will always be remembered for his gentle nature, quiet wisdom and humour. All who knew him know we’ve lost one of the nicest and kindest person that you ever have known. Beyond everything, Gary’s life-long commitment and unconditional love for his children and family never wavered. Gary is survived by his children, Natalie (Alex) Grant, Larissa (Peter) Harrington and Jarrin; his grandchildren: Brayden, Carden, Dominic and Owen. He is also survived by his siblings: Carol, John, Tom, Betty, Nancy, Barb and Gord as well as their families. Gary was a beloved uncle to numerous nieces and nephews and a treasure to many, and his best buddies and former teammates who will always remember him with affection. Gary was predeceased by his parents Barb and Ken and his brother Don. A Celebration of Gary’s life will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 1:30 pm at the Warfield Village Hall. Cremation has taken place with a family gathering at Mountain View Cemetery for his interment. Bill Clark of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services is entrusted with the cremation arrangements. Donations may be made to Kids Sport, c/o Trail Aquatic and Leisure Centre, 1875 Columbia Ave., Trail, BC V1R 4T8 or www.kidsportcanada.ca. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family’s online register at www.myalternatives.ca

Frances Pauline Gordon Sadly, we wish to announce the passing of Frances Pauline Gordon at Rosewood Village on February 10, 2015. She was born March 1, 1917 in Loveland Colorado. She was predeceased by her husband Frank, her sister Margaret, her brothers Robert and Keith, granddaughter Carrie and great-granddaughter Hannah. She is survived by three daughters and one son with their children; Merle (Will) Wagner and their children Randy, Scott (Kerry) and Corina (Dale); Carol (Carmen) Purdy, and their children, Jamie (Debbie), Curt (Anne), and Jodi (Lee); Doreen (Dave) Heidt and their children Krista (Don), Kevin (Debbie); Len (Cherie) and their son Christopher. She was also blessed with 2 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Mom was the hub of the Gordon family. Little, but mighty, there wasn’t much she couldn’t do. In her senior years she walked to Fruitvale each day, danced twice a week and played bridge often. As a member of the United Church she kept busy baking for annual teas and working in the thrift shop. Her grandchildren stopped on the way home from school to play a game of cards and have a snack that was always waiting. Mom’s hamburger soup always appeared at the home of needy neighbours. We cannot thank the staff at Rosewood enough for the kindness and love they showed mom during her eight-year stay. You are angels. A big thank you to Dr. Stanley for years of care mom received. She will be missed by her family and friends but loved forever. A memorial service will be held in the spring for family and friends. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family’s online register at www.myalternatives.ca

Grieve, Gordon “Fuzzy” 1924-2015 It is with sadness that the family of Fuzzy Grieve have to announce his passing on Feb. 14, 2015. Fuzzy was born March 13, 1924 to May and Will Grieve in Trail. Gordon, as his mother always called him, was a preemie and it wasn’t a sure thing that he would live. But live he did and what a life. He became a most loved son to Will and May, brother to Elliot, Jean, Cliff and Beth, husband to Dorothy, father to Janice and Christine, grandfather to David and friend to most everyone he met. Fuzzy joined the war effort in 1944 and was a member of the Canadian air force stationed in Moose Jaw. After his time in the service he came home and married the prettiest girl there was, Dorothy Leckett in 1947. They stayed in Fruitvale and Fuzzy started his working life at Cominco and they had their two girls.

Tuesday, February 17, 2015 Trail Times

In 1950 Dorothy and Fuzzy bought what was the Fruitvale Feed and Seed store which very quickly became known as “Fuzzy’s” and became pre-eminent store keepers of hardware, feed and beautiful things. Needless to say the beautiful thing part belonged to Dorothy. Fuzzy was much more adept at feed, hardware and fishing lures. Stories are still told of Fuzzy standing outside the Fruitvale Feed and Seed leaning on his broom collecting the news and daily happenings in Fruitvale. The Times had nothing on Fuzzy. His memory of Fruitvale, its residents and daily happenings was prodigious. In 1988 Fuzzy and Dorothy retired from their life’s work and turned to more important activities, like golf and curling. Fuzzy was a founding member of Champion Lake Golf course and spent many happy hours there with his gang of friends complaining about how bad the game was. Fuzzy kept up golfing and curling until he could just no longer find the energy to do it and at that point he

retired to his chair to coach and hurl advice at the TV. He was one of the morning coffee guys and kept that up even after he and Dorothy moved to Rosewood in 2013. Fuzzy is survived and dearly missed by his bride of 67 years Dorothy, his daughters Christine and Janice (Brian), his grandson David, his brother Cliff (Pearl) and his many, many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. By request there will be no service. Al Grywacheski with Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ has been entrusted with arrangements. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Our family would also like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Rosewood Village who did an absolutely wonderful job of caring for our Dad. We also would like to thank the nurses at KBRH for their kindness and exceptional care. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family’s online register at www.myalternatives.ca

Philip Levine

Louis Jourdan

Levine was 87. Levine, the country’s poet laureate in 20112012, died at his home in California of pancreatic and liver cancer, his wife said Sunday. The son of Russian Jewish immigrants, Levine was profoundly shaped by his working-class childhood and years spent in jobs ranging from driving a truck to assembling parts at a Chevrolet plant. Although he taught in several colleges, he had little in common with the academic poets of his time. He consciously modeled himself after Walt Whitman as a poet of everyday experience and cosmic wonder, writing conversational poems about his childhood, living in Spain, marriage and parenting and poetry itself. “We’ve lost a great presence in American poetry,” said Edward Hirsch, a friend of Levine and president of the Guggenheim Foundation. Levine captured the ways “ordinary people are extraordinary,” while writing poems that are accessible to readers, Hirsch said Sunday. “They move between the most ordinary diction and high romantic heights.”

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - Louis Jourdan, the dashingly handsome Frenchman who starred in “Gigi,” ”CanCan,“ ”Three Coins in the Fountain“ and other American movies, has died. He was 93. Jourdan’s biographer, Olivier Minne, said the actor died Saturday at his home in Beverly Hills. “He was the last French actor from the Hollywoood golden era,” said Minne. Succeeding Charles Boyer as Hollywood’s favourite French lover, Jourdan romanced Joan Fontaine, Jennifer Jones, Grace Kelly and Shirley MacLaine in films during the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s. He also showed that he could play a villain in “Julie” (1956), in which he was Doris Day’s husband, a psychopathic killer. Through most of his 15-year career as a leading man, he was subject to the Hollywood habit of typecasting. “Any actor who comes here with an accent is automatically put in roles as a lover,” he complained. “I didn’t want to be perpetually cooing in a lady’s ear.” Jourdan’s film career reached a peak in 1957 with the Alan Jay Lerner-Frederick Loewe musical, “Gigi,” which won nine Academy Awards, including best picture. Jourdan remained unsentimental about his movies, claiming in 1985 that he never watched them: “When they’re on television, I click them away. Hollywood created an image, and I long ago reconciled myself to it. I was the French cliche.”

Helen Chisholm

was born on June 4, 1918 in Rossland and passed away peacefully with family by her side on February 11, 2015 at Columbia View Lodge. Helen is predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Joseph, and by her daughter, Janet Church. She is survived by her children Joseph (Micheline) and Dottie (Brian) Kuffner, also by her son-in-law Bob Church, and grandchildren; Gary, Susan (Bodo), Glen, Brian (Megan), Patty (John), Bobby (Mary), Jeanine (Michael), Troy (Karen) and Darrin (Christine), great-grandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren. Helen was involved with the Rossland fraternity of Eagles for many years, earning her accolades within the club. She was very involved with the Rossland United Church; she was a member of the Eastern Star and the Job’s Daughters too. Helen was proud of her designation as ‘honourary senior for lifetime’ at the Rossland Senior Centre. She also enjoyed her memberships in both the bowling and curling clubs of Rossland. A Celebration of Life will be held for Helen on Saturday, July 25th at 11:00am at the Rossland United Church; the family invites you to contact them for more details. Gwen Ziprick of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence by visiting the family’s register at www.myalternatives.ca As an expression of sympathy, your donations to The Greater Trail Hospice Society would be greatly appreciated. www.trailhospice.org The family would like to thank Lorna Rafuse of the Greater Trail Hospice Society, Dr. McCoid and the entire staff at Columbia View lodge for their care of Mom. There are no words to describe how these people contributed so significantly to Helen’s quality of life over the last few months. Mom was such a kind and loving woman, she will be greatly missed by all.

Smoke Eaters settle for split of wild weekend games BY JIM BAILEY

Times Sports Editor

The Trail Smoke Eaters split a pair of weekend games against Interior division rivals defeating West Kelowna Warriors 8-7 in an epic overtime game on Friday, before succumbing to the Penticton Vees in a close 5-2 match at the Cominco Arena on Saturday. Penticton quietly clinched the BCHL regular season title on Saturday, but for two-and-a-half periods the vaunted Vees didn’t look like a dominant team against Trail, until they scored four goals in the final 13 minutes to claim the victory. “I felt we just loosened up a little bit in the last 10 minutes,” said Smoke Eater head coach Nick Deschenes. “But when you counter 10 minutes versus 50 minutes, there is a definitely a lot there to be happy about.” The Smoke Eaters had taken a 2-1 lead 4:40 into the third period on a Cooper Leitch goal, but Gabe Bast would tie it and Steen Cooper score the winning goal midway through the period jamming Bast’s initial shot in from the side of the net to give the Vees its league best 40th win of the season. The Smokies got on the board first when Dallas Calvin extended his league-leading point scoring streak to seven games, cleaning up the rebound on a pretty passing play with Jake Lucchini and Craig Martin at 5:48 of the first

The game would remain 1-0 through one, highlighted by a lively tilt between the Smokies defenceman Stephen Penner and Dakota Conroy. The Vees would draw even on a shorthanded break, when Demico Hanoun‘s shot from the top of the circle snuck through the pads of Trail goalie Brett Clark 37 seconds into the second to tie it

BY TIMES STAFF The Trail Bantam Tier 2 Smoke Eaters won their first game of the playoffs at the Cominco Arena on Saturday with a tight 3-1 victory over the Nelson Tier 2 Leafs. In Game 1 of a first to four-points playoff matchup, midway through the second period Bodie Gallo broke through the defence and Marty Ingram followed up, gathering the loose puck and beating Nelson goalie Brody Herridge to put the Bantam Smokies up 2-0 and score what proved to be the winning goal. The victory gives the Smokies a leg up on the playoff that will see the winner earn a spot in the B.C. Bantam Tier 2 provincials next month. The Smokies opened the scoring at 10:29 of the first period, when Herrige stopped a Tom

at 1-1. Trail would gain momentum, however, after the mild-mannered Connor Brown-Maloski dropped the gloves with Shayne Gwinner and ended up on top. Trail swarmed the Penticton net on two power plays in the last half of the second period, but couldn’t beat Miska despite wild scrambles and glorious opportunities with

the man advantage. “Us not capitalizing on the numerous opportunities in the second period was probably what cost us the game overall, because there were some Grade A scoring opportunities, and both teams’ power plays were ineffective.” Less than five minutes into the third, Leitch would wire one inside the post past Mishka on

another nice setup from Lucchini and Calvin to give Trail a 2-1 lead. However, Bast’s point shot through a crowd beat Clark high blocker side to tie it at 6:46. Cooper would net the go-ahead goal, then pick up an insurance marker when Alfred found the Minnesota-Mankota commit standing alone in front of Clark at 14:54 of the final period. The Vees would pound the nail into the coffin with 1:05 to play scoring into an empty Trail net. Penticton outshot the Smoke Eaters 43-33, including 19-9 in the third period. Miska was named the game’s first star, with Trail goalie Clark taking second star honours and Cooper the third star. Trail’s Jordan Passmore was named the Fortis Energy Player of the Game. In a wild matchup at Royal LePage Place in Kelowna Friday, Jake Lucchini, Harlan Orr, and Martin scored twice and it was Calvin with the OT winner for the Trail Smoke Eaters in an 8-7 win over the host West Kelowna Warriors. Jason Cotton and Tyler Kunz put the Warriors up in the first but Martin got his pair in the second to tie it before Orr and Lucchini put Trail up 4-2. Seven goals followed in a frantic back-and-forth third period with Cotton’s second tally forcing OT with just over a minute to play, before Calvin won it 39 seconds into the first 4-on-4 extra frame. Following Ingram’s goal, the Leafs would pressure in the third, but Josh Ballarin came up with several big saves to keep the Leafs off the board. That is until the midway mark of the third period. After Nate Ingram was sent off for roughing, the Leafs would capitalize on the power play a minute later when Hayden Klashinsky’s point shot found its way through traffic, beating a screened Ballarin on the blocker side to draw the Leafs within one. WORLD CUP SKELETON

Local World Cup skeleton racer, Joe Cecchini from Fruitvale, finished 12th in the final FIBT World Cup Race of the season on Sunday in Sochi, Russia. Cecchini, who has dual citizenship and slides for Italy, raced to his best finish on the World Cup circuit on the track that hosted the 2014 Olympics. His finish in Russia moved him to 22nd overall in world rankings and ensured he will be racing in the World Championships which will be held in Winterberg, Germany on March 5-6.

Yankees trio honoured

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - The Yankees are retiring the uniform numbers of Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Bernie Williams and will honour the trio with plaques in Monument Park this season along with Willie Randolph. Pettitte (46), Posada (20) and Williams (51) will raise the Yankees’ total of retired numbers to 20. The Yankees also are expected to at some point retire Derek Jeter’s No. 2, their last single digit number in use. Williams will be honoured before the May 24 game against Texas and Randolph as part of Old Timers’ Day before the June 20 game against Detroit. Posada’s ceremony will be

on Aug. 22, followed by Pettitte’s the next day. Williams joined Jeter as part of the group that won four World Series titles in a five-year span from 1996-2000, and Posada, Pettitte and Jeter won five titles in all. Their numbers join those of Billy Martin (1), Babe Ruth (3), Lou Gehrig (4), Joe DiMaggio (5), Joe Torre (6), Mickey Mantle (7), Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey (8), Roger Maris (9), Phil Rizzuto (10), Thurman Munson (15), Whitey Ford (16), Don Mattingly (23), Elston Howard (32), Casey Stengel (37), Mariano Rivera (42), Reggie Jackson (44) and Ron Guidry (49). Jokinen happy to be-Leaf

THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Olli Jokinen doesn’t know how long he’ll be a Toronto Maple Leaf, but there are no doubts regarding where he’ll play with his new team. Interim head coach Peter Horachek said Jokinen, 36, will play centre when he joins the lineup. The Leafs acquired Jokinen, prospect Brendan Leipsic and a 2015 first-round pick from the Nashville Predators on Sunday for defenceman Cody Franson and forward Mike Santorelli. Jokinen took his physical Monday but didn’t practise similarly Leipsic didn’t skate with the AHL Marlies - because the deal hadn’t been finalized. It’s unclear if Franson, a former Beaver Valley Nitehawk, and Santorelli will complete their physicals in time to allow Jokinen to play Tuesday night

against the Florida Panthers. Jokinen recorded just three goals and three assists in 48 games this season, his first with Nashville, and had played just once in February. The six-foottwo, 210-pound forward signed a one-year, US$2.5-million freeagent deal with the Predators last summer but said a reason for his lack of production was the club’s decision to play him on the wing instead of centre, his natural position. “I don’t know what happened between July 2 and training camp but I found myself on the wing, playing right wing most of the year,” Jokinen told a large media gathering at Mastercard Centre. “I was very uncomfortable, I have never played wing before in my life. “I think I wasn’t used properly there . . . at the same time

as a player you try to do your job as best you can. I didn’t go to the coaches and tell them to put me at centre, I tried to do my role the best I could. About two weeks ago what I was doing wasn’t good enough anymore and I’m here now.” Jokinen wasn’t overly surprised to be dealt to Toronto, adding he felt something was imminent. “It’s a tough part of the business . . . you never know what’s going to happen. I wasn’t fine being the extra guy because nobody wants to be that extra forward and not play but at the same time I was part of a firstplace team.” Nashville (38-12-6, 82 points) has the NHL’s best record. But Toronto (23-29-5, 51 points) is in a free fall, having dropped 22 of its last 26 games.

Smoke Eaters claw out overtime victory

FROM PAGE 11 Seven goals followed in a frantic backand-forth third period with Cotton’s second tally forcing overtime with just over a minute to play. However, Calvin would score 39 seconds into the first 4-on-4 extra frame to steal ain important play-off point from the Warriors. “It was interesting, we just kept battling,” said Deschenes. “It was definitely one of the most roller-coaster type games I’ve been a part of.” Lucchini had a fivepoint night with two goals and three assists, moving him into

fourth spot in league scoring with 31 goals and 75 points. Martin and Calvin each had four points and were named the games’ first and third stars respectively. The Warriors outshot Trail 41-32 with the Warriors’ Cotton named the game’s second star. Frustrated by injury for much of the season, the Smoke Eaters have played entertaining hockey since Christmas and in particular the past seven matches going 3-2-0-2. “As a young coach in the league, I have extensive playing experience, but going through these kinds

Trail Smoke Eaters

of seasons, ups and downs and stuff, I’m limited in that department, so to modify things a little bit, and see some results is definitely encouraging. We’re finishing things on the right note, and it’s going to be one of those seasons where we shake our heads and wonder, ‘how are we not in the playoffs?’” In the Interior playoff race, Salmon Arm fell into a tie with West Kelowna for the fourth and final playoff berth in a 2-1 loss to Vernon Friday, while West Kelowna rebounded from the loss to Trail with a 4-1 victory over Nanaimo Clippers Sunday. The

Island-division leading Clippers lost all three games to Interior division teams on the weekend losing 4-2 to Penticton and 4-1 to Venon before its loss to the Warriors. Trail will look for its first win against the Vipers this season when they play a home-andhome with Vernon this week. The Vipers sit in second place in the Interior division and have clinched a playoff spot with 72 points. The Smokies face the Snakes Wednesday at the Cominco Arena at 7:30 p.m. with admission prices $5 across the board. Trail’s final home game goes on Saturday versus the Warriors.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - Audiences were more than curious to check out the big-screen adaptation of the racy phenomenon “Fifty Shades of Grey” this weekend. The erotic R-rated drama sizzled in its debut, earning an estimated $81.7 million from 3,646 theatres in its first three days, distributor Universal Pictures said on Sunday. Director Matthew Vaughn’s “Kingsman: The Secret Service” also exceeded expectations, landing in second place with an estimated $35.6 million. Animated children’s film “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” came in third with $30.5 million in its second weekend in theatres. Rounding out the top five were holdovers “American Sniper,” with $16.4 million, and “Jupiter Ascending,” with $9.4 million.

Tell sister-in-law’s parents she is not welcome Mailbox

Marcy Sugar & Kathy Mitchell

tion. Annie, can her parents do anything to force her to get treatment? How do we handle family gatherings where we want my parents-in-law to come because we adore them, but we can’t tolerate Mindy? -- At a Loss Dear At a Loss: Your wife should speak to her parents and explain that Mindy is not welcome around your son because she is unable or unwilling to control her abusive behavior. It is dangerous and frightening for a 2-yearold to be subjected to such outbursts. Mindy should be aware that she is responsible for her actions, and if

same glasses. Once, she even served a glass to my mother. I nearly freaked out. Did my nephew have the right to give those glasses to anyone he chose? Can I suggest that if he no longer wants them, I’d like them back so I can gift them to my niece? Or do I just forget about them? -- Wine-ing in Wisconsin Dear Wisconsin: When your mother gave you those glasses, did she put restrictions on what you could do with them? Apparently not. Yet you are doing that to your nephew. Heirloom items should stay in the family, and your nephew is respecting that by giving the glasses to his parents. Please make sure your brother understands that you would like them back should he ever decide to get rid of them. Dear Annie: My ex-husband could be “Estranged Dad,” whose daughter didn’t

invite him to her wedding. Here’s the other side: As a child, our daughter wanted Dad to take her to see her favorite hockey player. Instead, he took her brothers, saying, “Hockey isn’t for girls.” When she went away to

college, he took money from her account to buy gas to visit her. He once took all of her saved tuition money to pay his back taxes. She had to get a second job and needed an extra two years to graduate. He will never apologize because he thinks

he did nothing wrong. He wasn’t invited to her wedding and has no clue why. -- Mom Who’s Seen Both Sides Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.

she is out of control and feels suicidal, she should speak to a therapist who can help her. You cannot decide how your in-laws choose to deal with Mindy, but you can set the boundaries in your own home. Your son’s welfare comes first. Dear Annie: My mother gave me a set of wine glasses that she received on her wedding day almost 60 years ago. When my nephew married, I gave him these glasses as a wedding gift. After six months, the marriage was dissolved, and my nephew moved back in with his parents (my brother and his wife). At that time, I asked my nephew to be sure to get the wine glasses in the divorce because I wanted them to stay in the family. That was 10 years ago. My nephew has since remarried. I have attended two dinners at my brother’s home where my sister-in-law served wine in these

Dear Annie: My wife’s sister is 21, lives with her parents and has extremely violent long-lasting outbursts that culminate in her being verbally and physically abusive. “Mindy” tells everyone she is suicidal, although she has never made any attempt to harm herself. She obviously has deep psychological issues, yet absolutely refuses treatment. At our last visit, I swore to myself that neither our young son nor I would be subjected to her outbursts again. Here’s the problem. Our son will be 2 years old soon, and we want to give him a birthday party. But if his grandparents come, it will be nearly impossible to keep Mindy from showing up. YourByhoroscope Francis Drake For Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is the perfect day to consider friendships and what they mean to you. Friendships improve our health and enrich our lives. What kind of friend are you to others? TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Today’s New Moon urges you to examine your relationship to authority figures -- parents, bosses, teachers and VIPs. How can you improve these relationships? GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) What further training or education might benefit your work? How can further education or travel enhance your life? CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Make a resolution to reduce your debt in every way possible this year. Be proactive about doing so. As the

months go by, you’ll be grateful you took this approach. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Today’s New Moon is the best day to ponder close friendships and partnerships. In a successful partnership, you are as good for your partner as he or she is for you. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Think about how you can be more efficient and productive in your job -- in fact, in everything you do. This will give you a big sense of personal reward. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Today’s New Moon urges you to get in touch with your creative impulses. As children, we dance, sing and draw. What happens when we grow up? Remember that you are a verb not a noun. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) What do you do to improve your home and also your relations with family

members? Think about this during today’s New Moon. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Be clear in all your communication with others. Today’s New Moon is the perfect time to be aware of your daily style of speaking. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Think about how you can either boost your income or make the best use of the money you now earn.

Similarly, are you taking care of what you own? AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) The New Moon today is in Aquarius, which is the perfect time to take a realistic look in the mirror to see how you can improve your image. Try it. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Your belief about what is possible influences what manifests in your life. Today

is a good day to think about this. What do you believe? How do your beliefs limit your achievements? YOU BORN TODAY You have great sensitivity, which you often express in the arts. You are philosophical and have the power to magnetize others to your words and actions. You like to take the long view in any situation. You wait before you act. Black Press offering $5,000 business scholarships for students BC Local News It’s that time of the year, when graduates are filing off their report cards and transcripts to the programs and universities they’re eyeing as their new four-year homes. And after all that work just to get in, to beat the odds and a whole lot of other applicants, they could use some aid. That’s why Black Press will be supplying 37 freshman students accepted to the University of Victoria’s Peter B. Gustavson School of Business with $5,000 annual scholarships – for students in several communities and districts Black Press’s newspapers serve. Applying for the scholarship is simple: every high school student accepted into the School of Business will be automatically considered for the $5,000, but the deadline to apply is

February 28, 2015. More information can be found on UVic’s website. To qualify, students must: • Complete an application to the BCom program or be a returning student to the University of Victoria Gustavson School of Business. If you have not already applied to BCom, visit our admissions page for details; • Have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement; • Have demonstrated involvement in a community or campus organization; • Highlight your personal goals, ambition and judgement of ethical behaviour; • Graduate from one of the participating school districts.

Healthy environment makes healthier people

H

uman health is connected to the environment. We require specific conditions in order to thrive on our planet. These include clean air, fresh water, food, fuel, protection from UV radiation, and a relatively stable climate. These conditions are known as ecological determinants of health. When these determinants are threatened, our health is too. Now you might be thinking “that’s a nobrainer – everyone knows that” but have you ever wondered how you as one individual can influence such large global issues? I find it helps to think of two levels: personal health and global health. Both are important and we can make changes that improve both levels either separately or simultaneously. You could make a personal level health goal like walking for an hour on Saturday mornings with the dog. Walking regularly is proven to reduce your risk of chronic diseases. You could also make a global health goal, like moving closer to your place of work so that you don’t need to drive to work. When you drive less often your fossil fuel consumption decreases and that helps improve air quality. You can also combine personal and global goals for maximum impact. Setting a goal like biking to work three days a week is good for your body, your wallet, and the planet!

is looking for paper carriers in all areas for one day a week Call

We can start small and work our way up to larger actions. Try buying honey from a local, environmentally-minded bee keeper instead of buying imported sweeteners. Starting to compost at home helps reduce the amount of waste

that ends up in landfills. Xeriscaping our properties reduces water usage. We can also encourage larger change by advocating for policies and programs that help protect our environment such as initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emis-

sions. Big change starts with small steps. Protecting our environment and our health is something we all can do. Kerri Wall is a community health facilitator with Interior Health.

First avalanche rescue dog in West Kootenay By Tamara Hynd Nelson Star

Not only does Exie, a purebred German shepherd, hold a Whitewater season’s pass, she and handler Lindsay Eastwood have recently been certified by the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association. Together Eastwood, 24, and three-yearold Exie are the only avalanche rescue dog team in the West Kootenay. “There is another CARDA dog team in training in Rossland,” said Eastwood. “Our next closest CARDA resources include six teams in Revelstoke, one in Invermere, and three in Fernie. There have been other teams here in the past though none in the last few years.” Eastwood said she and Exie only took a year and half to do the two-year training, which she attributes to Exie’s “strong background” of two years police training in Edmonton. Previously from Kamloops, Eastwood and her charge now live in Nelson where Eastwood said she’s hoping to remain year-round. A combination of a good nose with good training makes a good avalanche and wilderness rescue dog, but according to Eastwood, even more important is having a high hunting or prey drive. “The desire to keep looking for the ‘prey’ for extended periods of time,” she

said. “In our case we train the dogs to look for live human scent, which humans shed constantly in the form of skin cells, bacteria, parasites, etc. which make up a combination unique to people.” She said without an “innately high hunting drive” it is very difficult to get the dog to want to work. “We try to make searching the most exciting game our working dogs will ever play so that they will want to work when they need to.” And for Exie, she is trained to associate live human scent with her favourite game — tug-of-war. She uses her nose to find human scent in the air then follows it to the point where it is coming out of the snow. From there she digs to pursue the scent to it’s source. In addition, German shepherds have a double coat which grows in thick, keeping them warm in the winter and her size is a great feature. “She’s big enough to cover ground efficiently but small enough for me to carry,” said Eastwood. Whether the team arrives by helicopter or skis, Exie’s skill to quickly and comfortably stand balanced on Eastwood’s back is highly functional. Perching on Eastwood’s back saves Exie’s energy when skiing in deep or challenging snow conditions so she is fresh once they arrive at a search site. It can also make loading the dog in and out of

helicopters easier. Not just anyone can be the human side of this specialized team. Eastwood is a professional ski patroller at Whitewater, which requires an Occupational First Aid level 3 or equivalent first aid course and a Canadian Avalanche Association Level 1 Avalanche course. The pair are also members of Nelson Search and Rescue. (CARDA requires both of those certifications as well as a ground search and rescue to be a member.) Exie works alongside Eastwood on the Whitewater Snow Safety Team. “For a hasty search we try to cover the area as efficiently as possible,” she said. “For a finer search we use the wind and work into it to give Exie the best chance possible of scenting something. My job is to help Exie cover the whole area and know where to search, as well as watch her body language for interest and indication.” Eastwood said when Exie first gets a scent, she indicates with a subtle body language change, something each handler has to learn from their dogs. Once she has followed the scent to a point where it is coming out of the snow, she is trained to pursue it to the source by digging. The duo has not yet had an avalanche search but they are ready at any time. “The best case scenario for Exie’s career would be to train lots and never be needed,” said Eastwood. “We just hope that

everyone enjoying avalanche terrain has all the gear and training to keep them as safe as possible.”
